Some attention should be given to definitions. The term "unit operation " may have at least two meanings. One meaning is the merging of titles and the development and operation of the unitized area, as if it were one tract of land held under a single oil and gas lease, according to a definite program intended to accomplish a maximum recovery from the pool as a whole at a minimum of cost. It is incomplete when the royalty owners do not also merge their titles to their oil and gas rights in the area, and is complete when they do. The other meaning is not accompanied by any merger of titles, but the development and operation of the area is in accordance, as nearly as reasonably practicable, with such a program. This second conception may be nothing more than a cooperative development and operation plan, but in this paper it is regarded as more than that. If there cannot be unit operation without a merger of titles, it would seem that the state cannot require unit operation, for it cannot require a merging of titles; but if it may consist in requiring each and all of the leaseholders to develop and operate or to submit to a development and operation according to some such common plan as is referred to above without at the same time requiring a merger of titles, it would seem that unit operation may be required by the state. Whether the states have this power is the subject to be herein considered. If the state can so bind the several lessees, it also can so bind the several lessors. The writer does not know what would be an ideal plan for the development and operation of a pool; but it takes into account the fact that the accumulation of gas and oil is not uniform throughout the formation; that often free gas, highly compressed, occupies the upper portions of the reservoir, the oil with compressed gas in solution coming next in order; that at places oil is not overlain by free gas, and sometimes there are peaks where free gas is not immediately underlain by any oil; and the fact that these substances are held under a uniformly distributed pressure, generally referred to as "rock pressure." It also recognizes that the most efficient utilization of this naturally existing reservoir pressure in the recovery of the oil requires that there be no operation of wells completed into areas where gas only has accumulated, for this diminishes the

INTRODUCTION Forecasting commodity markets is like predicting winners in a horse race: to get the answers right, one needs both luck and judgement. Commodity analysts bear some resemblance to racing tipsters as they try to convince interested parties that they have an inside track on which metal is going to win the great minerals race of the 1990s. Commodity analysts share some features with the gentlemen of the turf: • They influence other people in how to spend risk capital, • They don't put their own money at risk, and • If their tips consistently fail to deliver, then they end up looking elsewhere for employment. In order to find winners we need to know about the kind of race we are in and the strengths and weaknesses of all the runners. Miners are not interested in a five furlong sprint: their race is a long distance affair -- after all, the lead-times between discovery and start-up generally approach a decade for mines that will provide the staying power which leaders require in this industry. We need to look at the environment in which our commodities will be competing: in racing parlance, the going. Our equivalent is the economic background: just as some horses are at a relative advantage when the going is soft, so some commodities will do better than others if economic growth is sluggish. If we are going to pick the winners for the late 1990s, and as an industry, make the right investment decisions, nothing is more important than being able to forecast (with at least a semblance of accuracy) how and where the world's economy is going to develop in the next decade. In addressing the question of whether minerals are going to be leaders in the 1990s, this paper considers the idea that it will increasingly be the world outside the industrialised OECD that will provide the incremental growth in demand for mineral products. Economic growth in the Developing World is fundamentally different from that in the OECD, and the pattern of demand for materials in relation to economic output is much more favourable than in the OECD. If we are to forecast the future, we need to be able to understand the past, both in the boom times of the so called Golden Sixties and in the lean years that followed them. This should help us to decide whether the future is going to be like one or other of these extremes or, on the other hand, a return to normality. Having forecast the going, we can look at individual competitors. • Which are best placed to take advantage of the economic, social and industrial trends that we can now dimly foresee? • Which can resist the continued onslaught of the new materials and technologies? • Which of them will best weather the economic storms (assuming that recessions have not yet been abolished)? If we can provide answers to these questions, we will be well on our way to picking winners, i.e., the metals and minerals that will reward their owners with growing demand, steady (and high) prices leading to profits beyond the dreams of avarice.

Published data on the equilibria of carbon in binary Fe-C austenite with H2-CH4 and CO2-CO gas mixtures are used to obtain the constants of an equation repre -senting the activity coefficient of carbon throughout the stable austenite range of temperatutre mid compositiotl. Calculated values for the solubility of graphite are found to be in agreement with the best-published direct observations. Its heat of solution is 10,680 calper g-atom. The free energy of formation of cementite is culculated from the equilibrium compositions of austenite and of gas. Its entropy and heat of formation are also obtained. BASIC knowledge of the high-temperature properties and treatment of steels is contained in the Fe-C diagram and its extensions for the effects of alloying elements. The application of thermodynamics to the Fe-C system, with addition of alloying elements, can serve to simplify and systematize this knowledge. The points of beginning are the binary fee solution, austenite, concerning which our information is reasonably complete, and the binary carbide, cementite. Further studies must include the other phases of the binary system, a and liquid, and for these an accurate knowledge of the ? phase boundaries is essential. These studies should provide a firm base for systematic study of the effects of alloying elements on all phases of the system, their transformations, and precipitation phenomena. With the aid of the simplifying thermodynamic concepts of activity coefficients and interaction parameters it is to be hoped that the results of these studies will be amenable to computer solution thus making the information on multicomponent systems more readily available than would be possible in multidimensional diagrams. The situation in the United States, at the present time, regarding the supply of manganese ores and alloys of manganese is one of great seriousness and is likely to become increasingly so while the European war continues. The two principal iron-manganese alloys, ferromanganese and splegel-eisen, are indispensable in steel manufacture, being used extensively in the Bessemer and open-hearth processes. Spiegeleisen, the lower alloy, contains between 15 and 25 per cent., and ferromanganese, the higher alloy, between 60 and 80 per cent., of manganese. Besides manganese the alloys contain iron and carbon. On the market ferromanganese is usually quoted on the basis of 80 per cent. manganese, and spiegeleisen on the basis of 20 per cent. manganese. The consumption of ferromanganese has been increasing during recent years at the expense of spiegeleisen, because larger quantities of the latter must be used to accomplish the same purpose with the result that the amount of carbon introduced with it into the molten metal is frequently injuriously great. Manganese ore proper, in the form of manganese dioxide, is used extensively in many chemical industries, especially for oxidizing purposes. It is also used for the manufacture of both wet and dry electric cells and in the manufacture of paints and dyes. The manganese ore used in this country has been derived hitherto from three principal sources: Southern Russia, Southern British India and East Central Brazil. The following tables show the quantity of manganese ore imported from these countries, and (for comparison) the domestic production, during 1912, 1913 and 1914. The imported manganese ore has been used largely in the manufacture of iron-manganese alloys and in addition large quantities of the alloys themselves have been imported, chiefly from Great Britain, Germany and other European countries.

SOME time ago, the writer received from W. 0. Borcherdt, Manager of the, works of the Bertha Mineral Co. at Austinville, Va., several specimens of a dense yellowish slag-like material, containing cavities showing clear needle-like crystals, and representing a product formed by the fumes of zinc oxide and basic lead sulphate from the oxide furnace, attacking the firebrick lining of the flues. The matrix, which is of a greenish-yellow color, is made up chiefly of an amorphous glass, carrying numerous crystals, the latter being well-defined, clear, and transparent, but colored a very light yellow by small amounts of ferric oxide. A number of the crystals were carefully separated from the matrix and tested with the blowpipe. They have a fusibility of about 2, yield a globule of lead and a coating of lead oxide before the blowpipe on charcoal, and contain some zinc. Their hardness is 5 to 6. 1 Fig. 1. Under the microscope the crystals appear to be made up of a prism, with narrow faces, and a fairly large pinacoid, but unfortunately show no terminal faces (Fig. 1). Between crossed nicols they gave parallel extinction in. the three planes containing the crystallographic axes, and are therefore orthorhombic. The index of refraction is high. The practice of introducing acid into oil wells to increase production of oil and gas has been in use since 1894, when it was first used in the Pennsylvania oil fields30.‡ It is only since 1928 that it has been used to any extent in the Mid-Continent18. The process has proved successful in increasing production, at least temporarily, in depleted oil fields where the producing formation is highly calcareous and where water drive is not too pronounced. In the Zwolle field in Louisiana, where the producing horizon is a chalk, increases of 100 per cent have been recorded25. In north-central Texas, where the oil is produced from the Marble Falls limestone, equally pronounced increases have resulted3. The production also in some fields yielding oil from quartz sand cemented with calcitc has been benefited. The evidence of actual increase in total recovery of oil, however, has been questioned by some engineers18. It has been pointed out that the results of the treatment of a well in a now district, where the process has never been tried out, can never be predicted with certainty, since other factors besides percentage of calcareous content of the oil sand play a large part in determining the success of the method. Numerous articles have been published on acid treatment and on the effects of acid on limestone1-35, yet very little has been written concerning experimental work on the actual effect of acid on capillary pores and larger oil-coated voids of oil sands. This is due partly to difficulties in duplicating field conditions in a laboratory and partly to the fact that the process has been carried out largely by contracting companies that have been unwilling to publish details of their results for fear of loss of business to competitors. The authors, using equipment developed to measure the radial permeability of oil-sand cores2', have developed a method of investigating the results of acid treatment which has enabled them to test numerous cores and to study in some detail the action of acid on the different types of rocks, particularly fine-grained rocks.

IN the process of making steel in the open-hearth furnace the refining of the metal during the working period of the heat is largely accomplished through the agency of the slag. From the birth of the process until the present day steelmakers have recognized the importance of the slag in determining the composition of the metal and the quality of the product. The general relationships between slag composition and metal analysis have long been known, at least in a qualitative or approximate fashion. For examples, the iron oxide content of the slag is higher on lower carbon heats; the more basic slags are higher in iron oxide for a given carbon content; certain amounts of iron oxide and lime are required for phos-phorus removal and a high lime-silica ratio is needed if the sulphur content of the metal is to be diminished. In recent years a number of quantita-tive relationships involving these and other variables have been developed through plant and laboratory studies by numerous investigators in this country and abroad. The direct comparison of laboratory and open-hearth data involves the question of the degree to which each approaches the conditions of chemical equilibrium, a question which, from the open-hearth standpoint, we are scarcely yet in position to answer. And, although a considerable body of dependable equilibrium data has been obtained in the laboratory, this work has not yet been extended to cover the ranges of slag composi-tion encountered in basic open-hearth practice. In the present study we shall not attempt to draw comparisons between data from the two sources; nor do we attempt to draw conclusions as to the approach to chemical equilibrium in the open-hearth furnace. Many of the operating variables that are likely to be erratic or unrecorded during the earlier stages of the heat become more consistent and are more readily subject to observation and control during later stages. For example, undigested lime or ore gradually goes into solution, the rate of carbon drop levels off, and the temperature of the metal is brought under control. The Henderson ore body is east of the Continental Divide in the Front Range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, about 80 km (50 miles) west of Denver. The ore body is being developed for mining by workings that extend more than 1100 m (3500 ft) below the topographic surface. During construction of the mine workings, ground water in fractures in cystalline rock has been encountered. From 1969 to 1973, Charles S. Robinson & Associates, Inc., in cooperation with the engineering and geologic staffs of the Climax Molybdenum Company, a division of Amax Inc., studied the ground water geology of the Henderson mine development area. Detailed geologic record( of the Henderson mine were available as a result of the exploration, evaluation and development of the mine. Records of the flow, chemical composition and temperature of the ground water at and near the surface, from the entire mine, from portions of the mine, and from exploration holes drilled in the mine, were kept as the mine was developed. Where possible, ground water pressures in drill holes and changes in pressure with time, were recorded. The geologic, hydrologic and chemical data were correlated. The following conclusions were drawn from the correlations: The ground water in the Henderson mine occurs in fractures in Precambrian igneous and metasedimentary rock and in a series of Tertiary intrusive rocks. Two zones of ground water were recognized; an active zone, in which the fracture systems are recharged and discharged annually into the surface water system, and a passive zone, in which the fractures were filled with water in the geologic past. Discharge from the passive zone is through mine workings that intersect the fracture systems. Discharge from a fracture or fracture system is initially high but decreases with time. The rate of decrease in flow (or pressure) is exponential. By measuring the change in flow with time, it is possible to calculate the amount of flow at some given period of time in the future. Based on changes in rate of flow and pressure, and the geology, and assuming rates of mining of the ore, it will be possible to predict the volumes of water that will have to be handled during the life of the mine and the area around the mine that will be drained by the mining operation.

INTRODUCTION Leasing has become a major industry in many countries because of the advantages it affords. Whilst the accounting, legal and tax treatment of leasing varies from country to country, there is far more similarity than difference. The general approach to the subject is largely the same. This paper looks to the basic financial considerations in the decision to lease or buy. TYPES OF LEASES Before embarking upon the subject, it would seem appropriate to define a "lease". A lease may be defined as: "an agreement granting one party the right to use, for a specified period of time, property owned by another party in return for a series of payments of rental by the user to the owner''. Ownership, of course, generally entitles the owner to unrestricted use of the asset over its useful life in contrast to a lease which gives the lessee use over a limited period. The distinction between the status of owner and a lessee often is fairly small. In this case we are dealing with what is generally termed a "finance lease". A finance lease is one which substantially transfers the risks and benefits of ownership from the legal owner to the lessee. For example, a finance lease would exist where the lessee enters into a lease of an asset for most of its useful life and has an option to buy the asset at the end of the lease for a price which takes cognisance of the rentals already paid. Where a lease does not substantially transfer the benefits and risks of ownership to the lessee, i.e. those benefits and risks remain with the owner and lessor, the lease is termed an "operating lease" and is an agreement for the renting and usage by the lessee of an asset owned by the lessor for a limited period. An example of an operating lease might be where a tenant leases a building for a defined period say 6 years with the rent and occupancy subject to renegotiation at the end of the lease term. The economic consequences of the distinction between a finance and an operating lease is very important. With a finance lease, the lessee has a de facto economic interest in the asset and the alternative to a finance lease is some form of purchase; with an operating lease, the lessee does not have a basic economic interest in the asset and consequently a comparison with a purchase option involves far more than simply a funding comparison. Some of the principal differences between finance and operating leases can be summarised as follows: (a) finance leases: -the risks and benefits of ownership are substantially transferred to the lessee; -the lessor normally recovers his investment during the term of the lease; -the lessor in entering into the transaction is relying more on the creditworthiness of the lessee than the underlying value of the asset; - the lease is either non-cancellable or a large penalty will apply for unilateral cancellation by the lessee; (b) operating leases -the risks and benefits of ownership remain essentially with the lessor; -the lease rental income would not normally cover the recovery of the lessor's investment; -the lessor evaluates his risk in terms of the underlying value of the assets;

ABOUT ten years ago nepheline syenite was introduced to the ceramic industry and the material has now found application in the various branches of the industry, namely, as a vitrifying agent in white-wares and as a source of alumina and alkalies in glasses, glazes, and porcelain enamels. Spence1 described the early mining and processing developments regarding this material. Since the time of his article many research papers have appeared relating to the usage of nepheline syenite but little has been published relative to subsequent mining and processing methods. A complete indexed review of the literature was issued recently by Ohio State University.2 Since "Lakefield" nepheline syenite from Blue Mountain, Ontario (Fig I); is the only commercial ceramic-grade nepheline syenite now being marketed on this continent, discussion is limited to this operation carried on by American Nepheline Limited, Lakefield, Ont., and its subsidiary in the United States, American Nepheline Corp. at Rochester, N. Y. THE DEPOSIT Blue Mountain is a long ridge rising to an elevation of about 350 ft at its highest point above the surrounding country and extending for about six miles in a northeasterly direction across Methuen township, Peterborough County. The rock of the Blue Mountain central alkaline intrusive is fine grained, light colored and of even granitic texture. The solidified mass consists predominately of the minerals albite, nepheline and microcline in order of abundance. The average mineralogical composition for the deposit obtained by a study of 112 samples taken regularly over the whole formation is as follows:3 [VOLUMETRIC MINERAL PER CENT Albite54 Microcline20 Nepheline22 Muscovite2 Mafics2 (Biotite, hastingsite, magnetite) Total100] The mineral nepheline (or nephelite) belongs to the feldspathoid group but is lower in silica content than are the feldspars. It is a silicate of soda, potash, and alumina (NaKAl2O32SiO2). Its presence with albite (Na2O A1203 6SiO2) and microcline (K20 A12O3 6SiO2) gives the Blue Mountain deposit an alkali content of 15 pct and an alumina content of approximately 24 pct. While this huge alkaline mass is somewhat variable mineralogically, it has a uniform chemical composition. When the iron, mostly in the form of magnetite, is removed during processing, a remarkably uniform finished product is obtained. Geological surveying has disclosed many million tons of nepheline syenite in the Blue Mountain deposit. Diamond drilling in the area where mining is now being carried out indicates a block of about one million tons.

Introduction STRIPPING is the name given to the process of removing clay, rock, or other cover from deposits of coal or ore. In this paper it is intended to cover the methods used in carrying on this operation in the anthracite coal regions of Pennsylvania. In doing this, attention will be chiefly devoted to those methods wherein practice in different sections of the region differs, or is susceptible to change or improvement, though it is intended to give as complete data as possible concerning all stages of the operation. The data from which this paper has been prepared have been collected and submitted by a committee representing the larger users of stripping methods, of which committee the writer has acted as chairman. Data and assistance have also been obtained from various mining men, engineers, contractors and manufacturers of stripping equipment, to all of whom our appreciation is clue.

Pulverized coal was first used for firing cement kilns about 45 years ago, with such success that it has continued in general use. Based on cost, pulverized coal is usually the most economical fuel. In some localities natural gas or oil is cheaper, but 85.5 per cent of all cement kilns at present are fired with pulverized coal. The pulverized-coal flame is well suited to kiln conditions. Its soft, luminous nature gives it a high radiating property and the length of the flame can be readily varied to suit conditions in a kiln of any length. Ash and slag cause most of the dificulties incident to the burning of coal. In a. cement kiln, however, the ash, being similar in composition to the raw mix and being deposited uniformly in the mix and clinker, occasions no difficulty as long as it remains constant in quality and quantity. Until 6 years ago almost all cement kilns using pulverized coal employed the bin system. The coal was dried and pulverizeti in a separate plant and delivered into a bin at the kiln. Thus the bin system requires driers, storage-type pulverizers, conveying systems, individual kiln bins, pulverized-coal feeders and primary air fans. The direct-fired system requires only a pulverizer and a blower. Fig. I shows typical plants. The first installations of direct-fired pulverizers were of the impact type but fineness of pulverization was both inadequate and variable. About 1927 a few direct-fired installations employing tube-type pulverizers were made, which were much more satisfactory. As more efficient pulverizers were developed from 1934 on, equipment for direct firing was installed at a large number of plants, until now 196 of about 900 kilns in use in the United States are direct-fired. Most of these replaced antiquated bin systems. Process of Burning Cement Clinkers The process of burning cement clinkers is fundamentally one of heat transfer. In boilers and other heat-exchange apparatus the area of the surface receiving heat from the gases is the best unit for comparing output, This seems to be equally true for kilns. The inside kiln surface is the heat-receiving surface and its area is used as the unit of kiln size in the following comparisons. Heat input is based on British thermal units in the fuel. E. G. Bailey,' in his work on boiler-furnace heat absorption, has used the unit "B.t.u. available." This is the practical calorific power of the fuel, plus the heat in the air used for combustion. In other words, it is the heat available for useful work in the furnace or kiln. The unit of kiln output is barrels per hour. The composition of the raw mix, the percentage of water in the slurry of wet plants and hardness of burning all affect the output. These conditions, however, are hard to evaluate and probably have less effect on the output than irregularities of raw feed and clinker discharge and inexpert control of combustion. Three typical outcrop sandsone samples were saturuted with common salt solutions, then heated to several maximum temperatures. After cooling, it was found that per-rrreuhilities had increased much more for salt-saturated samples than for samples not saturated with salt but heated to the same temperatures. This was only true, however. for samples heated above the melting points of the particrrlar salts. Potassium chloritle was particularly effective with Bandera sandstone. Samples saturated with potassium chlorirlr. solution and heated to 900C showed an 11-fold increa.se in perrrieahility. Samples without potasrirdrn chloritle but heated to the .same temperature. showed only a 2.7-jold incresre in permecahility. In application, it seems possible that injecting chemicalc into the formations from a wellbore followed by applying intensive borehole heating might promote reactions which would greatly improve permeability of the formalions. INTRODUCTION Great changes in the physical properties of rocks which have been heated to temperatures in the range of 600 to 800C have been reported earlier. Permeability increases of 50 per cent, and equivalent decreases in sonic velocity and breaking strength have been observed. Although there might be some suppression of certain reactions responsiblc for these changes when rock samples are heated under simulated reservoir pressure conditions. recent work has shown that these are more than offset by the increased importance of other reactions at high pressures. The reactions considered responsible for alteration of rock properties by heating include differential thermal expansion. dehydration, phase changes and dissociation of mineral constituents. Ceramists have long known that temperatures at which reactions occur can be raised or lowered by the presence of certain impurities in the sys. tcnl. Thus the possibility exists that by saturating rocks with appropriate solutions. desired reactions might be accelerated and unwanted reactions might be suppressec! when the rock is heated. Purpose of the present work was to investigate the effects of several common salts on the thermal alteration of sandstones. Types of reactions which might occur are reviewed and the findings of a number of thernlochemical alteration tests are presented. THEKMOCHEMICAL ALTERATION OF SANDSTONE MINERALS The most abundant constituent of most sandstones is quartz. Quartz can exist in at least eight different forms, but in the temperature range of immediate interest (to 900C) only two forms are of importance—alpha quartz below 573C and beta quartz above this temperature. Although the alpha-beta inversion of quartz is very important in thermal alteration of rocks. it is not particularly important here because the inversion temperature cannot be changed significantly by the presence of impurities or by the application of pressure. The transition temperature of quartz to tridynlite is 867C. but the transition is very sluggish. Tridymite is considered to be a metastable transition phase between two stable phases: quartz?cristobalite. However. the transition temperature for tridymite to cristobalite is 1,470C.4 The quartz-tridymite-cristobalite transition can be accelerated substantially by the presence of fluxing agents. Finely divided calcium, magnesium and titanium oxides accelerate the conversion while A12O may retard it. A Mixture of NaCl and CsCl reduces the temperature for cristobalite formation by as much as 420°C. Feldspars constitute the second most important mineral in sandstones. The melting points of feldspars range between 1,000 and 1,700°C depending upon the variety. No information available indicated any important role of fluxing agents in the thermal alteration of this group of minerals. Carbonate minerals are subject to dissociation at temperatures within the range of the present investigation. The dissociation of magnesite can start at a temperature of 373°C, but the reaction is sluggish and might not occur untll a temperature of 500°C or ,higher is reached. Dolomite dissociates in two stages at 500°C and 890°C, whereas calcite dissociation temperature is about 885C. Because CO2 is released in the dissociation of carbonates, ail such reactions are somewhat dependent upon CO2 partial pressure. In the absence of CO: in the surrounding atmosphere, the dissociation of calcite starts at 500°C.However. when 1 atm of CO surrounds the sample, the dissociation does not start until 900C. The other carbonates are apparently much less sensitive to a change in partial pressure of CO2. The aragonite calcite transformation can occur an!. where within the temperature range of 357 to 488°C. depending upon the presence of impurities such as barium. strontium. lead and perhaps zinc. The differential thermal analysis (DTA) curves of both magnesitc and dolomite vary with the presence of 'impuritics. The presence of iron in particular seems to affect the magnesitc DTA curve

ALLOYS of iron and aluminum up to 35 wt pct aluminum are single-phase solid solutions, and are of potentially wide applicability.1-3 In spite of early and continued interest1-4 little progress has been made until recently in the preparation and evaluation of sound alloys containing more than 6 wt pct aluminum. Vacuum-melting techniques for the production of ductile Fe-A1 alloys have been described recently.1-7 A. procedure for air melting these alloys is presented here. Low-carbon iron is induction melted without a slag in a rammed magnesia crucible. At the beginning of melt-down, aluminum pig (99.95 pct Al), charged in a clay-graphite bottom-pouring crucible is placed in a pot furnace at 1800°F. The primary deoxidation of the molten iron after melt-down is effected by the addition of 0.1 pct aluminum and 0.5 pct manganese. (Hilty and Crafts" have reported a significant increase in the deoxidation efficiency of the aluminum and manganese combination over that of the aluminum alone.) A more drastic deoxidation designed to reduce the oxyen content to the lowest possible level is accomplished by plunging metallic calcium to the bottom of the melt. This is done by wiring small cubes of the metal to a steel rod. A circular shield larger than the diameter of the crucible opening is attached to the rod so that any spa'ttering of the molten metal will not endanger the operator. Since the temperature of the molten metal is above the boiling point of calcium, the bath is vigclrously purged by calcium vapor. It is believed that the calcium-vapor treatment permits a homogeneous distribution of calcium in the melt. Owing to the vigor of the reaction the temperature of the molten metal should be kept below 2900°F prior to the calcium addition. A total of 0.05 pct calcium is added in two stages in this manner. The second calcium deoxidation is made just before charging the molten aluminum into the iron, in order that an excess of calcium be present for the remainder of the melt. The aluminum, which has been removed from the holding furnace, is then hydrogen degassed by bubbling chlorine through a quartz tube immersed in the molten aluminum. The hydrogen-chlorine reaction is an exothermic one preventing the solidification of the aluminum during the 5-min chlorination. Approximately 0.1 pct calcium, based on the amount of aluminum, is then added to the aluminum. A further excess of calcium is introduced into the melt in this manner. The oxide dross is removed, fluorspar is added to the molten iron, and the molten aluminum is poured through the fluorspar slag. The fluorspar should be dried thoroughly prior to its use, as any water present will react with the aluminum. Aluminum oxide formed during the pouring operation reacts with the fluorspar slag to form gaseous aluminum fluoride and calcium oxide. A forced-draft ventilating system is required for this operation as aluminum fluoride is toxic. As soon as the molten aluminum has been added, vigorous manual stirring of the melt is required because the slag-aluminum oxide reaction is highly exothermic and tends to take place near the top of the melt. The combination of high temperature and the slagging action of the fluorspar quickly erodes the crucible at the slag line if the aluminum is not stirred uniformly into the melt. It has been found that at least 4 min of manual stirring combined with induction stirring are necessary to ensure homogeneity. The power is shut off 1 min prior to pouring to allow metal and slag to separate. As much slag as possible is removed from the melt, which is then poured directly into cast-iron molds. A mold wash of aluminum oxide is used to prevent ingot sticking. For slab ingots which are to be rolled into sheet, a carbon-tetrachloride vapor atmosphere or a chlorinated-pitch mold wash is desirable, as the aluminum oxide formed in the pouring operation is subsequently removed by the chlorine in the presence of carbon." As in vacuum melting, a pouring temperature of about 2900°F is recommended. Adequate hot-topping is important as iron-aluminum ingots are subject to very deep piping. The phase structure and aging characteristics of two nickel-base alloys, Inconel 718 and 702, were investigated. Wrought and cast Inconel 718 showed ArisCb as the major hardening phase, as well as ture was positively identified. Inconel 702 had Ni3Al as the major hardening phase, as well as Cr7C3-of the phase amounts with temperature was determined. 1 HE value of phase structure and aging rate information in the utilization of alloys has been well established. As part of a continuing program, the results obtained on two nickel-base alloys, hconel 718 and Inconel 702, are presented here. Inconel 718 is a relatively new alloy considered for application in both sheet and cast form. Its novelty lies in the use of high columbium tantalum levels in a Ni-Cr-Fe base. No previous work on this type of alloy has been reported in the literature. Inconel 702 is being used now as an oxidation-resistant sheet alloy. Occasional fabrication problems spurred work on its basic structural behavior. The composition of 702 is essentially nichrome plus aluminum and titanium for strengthening and added oxidation resistance. This puts it in the basic class of other nickel-base alloys which have already been studied. The two alloys will be treated separately. INCONEL 718 Phase Study Methods. The phases present after the various conditions investigated were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis of two different elec-trolytically extracted residues and microscopic examination. The extraction methods, using 10 pct HC1 in alcohol and 10 pct H3PO, in water and the X-ray technique have been described previously.' The effect of temperature on the phase behavior was studied on sheet material using the following heat treatments: 2250°F, 2 hr, ice brine quench 1300 100 hr, water quench 2250°F, 2 hr, ice brine quench 1400°, 100 hr, water quench 2250°F, 2 hr, ice brine quench 1500°F, 100 hr, water quench 2250o 2 hr, ice brine quench 1700°F, 48 hr, water quench 2250°F, 2 hr, ice brine quench 1850°, 24 hr, water quench 2250°, 2 hr, ice brine quench 2000°F, 6 hr, water quench The high solution temperature was an attempt to dissolve as many phases as possible without causing melting. Aging exposures were made longer than normal heat treating times in order to approach equilibrium conditions more closely. Cast material was examined only in the as-cast condition and with the normal heat treatment (1700°F, 1 hr, air cool 1325oF, 16 hr,air cool). Materials. The full phase study was performed on sheet specimens approximately 1/2 in. by 2 in. by 1/16 in. The cast pieces were cut from the gating system of a vacuum-cast test piece. An all weld-metal specimen was made by running many weld beads on the sheet using filler made from the sheared edges of the sheet. All external contamination was removed by belt-sanding followed by an electro-polishing treatment. The typical composition of wrought Inco 718 is as follows: The alloy is air-melted. Cast hco 718 may have higher molybdenum. Shales rich in oil are found at several places along the coast of Brazil. The material has been prospected at several places, and samples have been examined and reported upon by competent authorities. So far as I am acquainted with them, these oil-bearing beds are of Tertiary age. A glimpse at the distribution and character of the Tertiary rocks of the region should give us some idea of the possible distribution of these oil-bearing shales. Tertiary rocks skirt the northeast coast of Brazil from the northern part of the State of Espirito Santo almost or quite to the Amazon valley. Here and there this narrow strip is cut in two by the encroachment of the sea, and the underlying gneisses, granites or other crystalline rocks are exposed upon the beach. In other places, the Tertiary belt widens out until it is 80 kilometers or more in width. Fig. 1 is a sketch-map of a part of the coast-area referred to. Along the coast from Prado, in the State of Bahia, northward to Natal, there is a line of bluffs from 15 to 90 meters high, interrupted here and there by stream-valleys. As seen from the sea, these bluffs are rather conspicuous and highly colored yellow, brown, red, white, black, and purple. These colors are often so mingled as to give the beds a mottled or parti-colored appearance. Fig. 2 shows a characteristic bit of the coast in the State of Parahyba do Norte. In some places, especially in the southern part of the State of Sergipe, and in the northern part of Rio Grande do Norte, the immediate coast is covered with sand-dunes. Here and there these sanddunes have been carried inland over the top of the Tertiary beds, and the subsequent encroachment of the sea has exposed the Tertiary rocks again, where they form the bases of the bluffs. This is well shown in Fig. 3, from a photograph taken at Bahia Formosa, on the coast of Rio Grande do Norte.

NonmEtallic inclusions in steel have received much attention by metallurgists during the past few years. Many investigators have been emphatic in stating their belief that these impurities are the chief causes of steel failures, while others think that their effects are negligible. One of the main reasons that definite information on the effects of these impurities is lacking is that no reliable method has been developed for the exact determination of the amounts of these different impurities in steel. Some valuable new information has been brought out by a reliable method for nonmetallic inclusions which has been developed at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Carnegie Institute of Technology and the Metallurgical Advisory Board. This procedure satisfactorily extracts some of the more common inclusions from steels, thus enabling the investigator to correlate steel failures with inclusion content. Although the data given herein are the first to be published on the subject of the electrolytic extraction method, the interest in the subject is evidenced by the fact that it is already being used by some 20 to 30 steel companies for their various purposes. Some of the comments received from these laboratories indicate that the method is highly satisfactory: the unfavorable comments, when traced to their sources, have been found to be based on some small mistake made in either installation or operation. The chief discrepancy seems to have occurred in attempts to apply the method to the extraction of inclusions from alloy steels. The procedure can be used only for the plain carbon steels and for such low alloy steels as those containing the usual amount of copper (0.2 to 0.3 per cent). Steels containing the carbide-forming alloys such as chromium, tungsten, etc., present far too many difficulties for the accurate determination of inclusions. Luckily, the iron and manganese carbides do not offer any difficulties and no contamination of the oxide-sulfide residue results, It is highly probable that some modification of the following

E. is the only one of the American National engineering societies whose dues are as low as $10 per year, and it actually spends more upon the Bulletin and Transactions than the sun total it receives for clues. It will mean a better publication, with more information than ever before. To successfully carry out our plans, we must have your co-operation.
