A general model which approximates the effect of cross- flow has been developed to give a practical method for predicting the waterflood behavior of a stratified reservoir. The model is based on a modification of Dietz's theory and allows for variations in both the permeability and hydrocarbon pore volume. In the particular cases considered, it is assumed that the permeability can be characterized by a log-normal distribution and the hydrocarbon pore volume by a normal distribution. A simple graphical method which enables the practicing engineer to predict the behavior of a stratified system is presented The results obtained by the proposed method are compared with those obtained by the Dykstra-Parsons method. As a result of this study the following conclusions have been drawn: (1) The effect of cross-flow in a stratified system can be appreciable, particularly at very favorable or very unfavorable mobility ratios; (2) Under normal conditions, the effect of variations in the hydrocarbon pore volume can be neglected; and (3) The failure to use all of the available permeability data can lead to large errors in the prediction of the behavior of a stratified reservoir. INTRODUCTION Various methodshavebeenproposedto characterize and to predict the waterflood behavior of a stratified reservoir. Most of the methods assume that the reservoir is composed of discrete homogeneous continuous layers. With this model, the degree of stratification can be measured by several parameters based on core-analysis data. Among these are the Lorenz coefficient1 and the variation of a log-normal permeability distribution? The behavior of stratified systems is usually predicted by the Stiles, Dykstra-Parsons method or some modification of these. In both of these methods the reservoir is divided into discrete homogeneous layers with no cross-flow between layers. In the Stiles method the mobility ratio is assumed to be equal to unity while in the Dykstra-Parsons method it is allowed to take on any value. Other predictive methods have been proposed; method allows for cross-flow between the beds and a method by Schmalz and Rahme6 correlate.s the recovery directly with the Lorenz coefficient. In this new approach, which is essentially a continuous analog of Hiatt's method, the effects of both mobility ratio and cross-flow between the beds have been included. It is assumed that the permeability can be represented by a log-normal distribution and the hydrocarbon pore volume or porosity by a normal distribution. These types of distributions have been observed by several authors, 1,2,4 and most field data seem to confirm their observations; e.g., if these distributions are assumed and there is a 1:l correspondence between porosity and permeability samples, the commonly encountered linear relationship between porosity and the log of permeability is obtained. Since, in many field cases the permeability and poro sity data are truncated or cut-off at predetermined upper and/or lower values, the effect of discarding part of the data was investigated with the proposed method. A better technique for truncating the data is suggested. THEORY In the derivation of the method to be described in this paper the following assumptions are made: 1. Capillary forces are negligible per se; their effects are only manifest in the relative permeability curves. 2. The fluids are immiscible, incompressible and homogeneous. 3. The reservoir is horizontal and uniformly thick; it is initially liquid saturated i.e., connate water and oil. 4. R. HATCH, Garfield, Utah.-The object of the meeting, I believe, is to determine the proper chemical composition to insure long wear of a ball in a mill, This might also apply to rods. I feel that there is only one way of determining accurately the wearing qualities of balls in mills, and that is by actually wearing out 400 or 500 tons of different kinds of balls. Two things add to the wearing qualities of a ball: (1) the tenacity, with which the particular particles of iron or steel are cemented together; (2) the individual hardness of each particle. My experience is that a ball that has a Brinell of 550 to 650 will give comparatively long life. There is considerable difference of opinion as to the best steel and iron alloys necessary to produce a satisfactory grinding ball. Some favor chrome, some manganese and some nickel. Personally, I believe cast iron alloyed with chrome makes the best ball for small sizes; for large sizes (3 1/2 in. and up) steel alloyed with manganese is best. L. 0. As I am connected with the Climax Molybdenum Co. you would hardly expect me to. We have been much interested in trying to work out this grinding-ball problem and have spent a great deal of thought and effort on it. As we are associated with the American Metal Co. and have a number of properties of our own, we are in position to try our ideas on ourselves first. We have tried different compositions, but have not done anything very remarkable with them yet, except that we have been able to say that the combination of chrome and molybdenum has given the best wearing ball. Mr. Hatch feels that iron is the best medium for grinding, but since toughness as well as hardness is a factor in wearability we feel that a well made steel is better for this purpose. Another difficulty with cast, or chilled, iron is lack of uniformity from day to day or from heat to heat and the impossibility of producing balls free from blow or shrinkage holes which materially affect their life. If cast iron is made hard it becomes brittle and lacks stretch or toughness. This prevents its use in the larger sizes, as breakage is a serious handicap to efficiency. We have tried hard and brittle balls and softer but very tough balls and have proved that maximum hardness, with sufficient toughness to prevent breakage, is the most important factor in resistance of a steel to abrasion. It is well known that chromium is one of the best hardening agencies for either iron or steel, and molybdenum is recognized as an element capable of introducing toughness. In other words, the proper combination of chromium and molybdenum permits unusual hardness with still sufficient toughness to stand up under severest impact. It is yet too early to give any actual mill results of this new combination and though we are proving our ideas at our own properties we have to depend on others to help us make the data more general and more worth while and would like to get some tests

THE importance of contact angles in flotation has long been recognized, but little has been done to get quantitative relationships between the surface coverage of the mineral by the reagent, the length of the hydrocarbon chain, and the contact angle. It is well known that for a complete monolayer on the surface of a mineral the contact angle 8 is determined only by the reagent1 and principally by the chain length of the hydrocarbon radical. Although for flotation the monolayer usually is regarded as being complete, early experiments of Wark and Cox&apos; showed that at very small concentrations of potassium ethyl xanthate the contact angle on galena changed in a continuous way from 0&apos; to the equilibrium value of 60". Further, Gaudin and Vincenta showed a similar continuity using heptylic acid and sphalerite. This shows that with probably incomplete monolayers, 0 varies with the degree of surface coverage. At the time these experiments were made it was impossible to measure the actual amount of surface coverage, especially since the decrease of the collector concentration in the liquor could be influenced by chemical side reactions. Through the use of the radioactive tracer method for the measurement of the amount of collector adsorbed on the surface of the mineral, Gaudin and Bloecher&apos; were able to determine accurately the actual surface coverage of dodecylamine acetate on quartz, but they did not measure any contact angles. It is believed that the relationship between the surface coverage and the contact angle is extremely important in flotation, especially as Gaudin and Bloecher showed that a 95 pct recovery is possible with a coverage of only 5 pct. Theoretical Considerations The work of adhesion W is the energy bound (in ergs per sq cm) when an interface is formed. It is determined by the difference of the free surface energies (surface tensions) of the respective phases 7j and yZ before contact and the interfacial free surface energy y, after contact. The definition of the contact angle permits the elimination of the unknown surface energy of the solid and hence the calculation of W from the surface tension of the liquid y and the contact angle 8: W = y (1 + COS0) [1] Consider a surface consisting of two components, identified as 2 and 3, 1 being the liquid. The amount of 2 in the composite surface is x, where 0 < x < 1. The respective contact angles with 1 and air are 8, and 8.. The total work of adhesion of such a surface is the sum of the values of the components multiplied by their respective areas. A formal relation can be written: Wm = x-W2+ (l-x)-W, [2] in which W, is the work of adhesion of the composite surface. Eq 1 can be introduced into Wt and Wa, but in the case of W, some discussion is needed. If the two components are segregated, each component forming an integral part of the composite surface there is no physical meaning for a contact angle 8m calculated from W,, by using eq 1. If, on the other hand, the area of each patch of the components is small in comparison with, say, the diameter of the bubble used in measuring, it could be expected that 0m would have a physical significance, because of the action of the surface tension of the liquid-gas interface tending to smooth out sharp corners. GRAPHITE has been included in U. S. lists of strategic minerals since the problem of mineral deficiencies was revealed during World War I. Since 1918 the domestic graphite industry has led a precarious existence, and there has been much uncertainty as to the amounts of usable graphite of various grades that would be available from domestic sources in time of emergency. In 1950-1951 therefore, the writer, assisted by Paul L. Weis, undertook a review of domestic graphite sources for the U. S. Geological Survey.&apos; The conclusions of this study are presented here, with a discussion of some technologic and politico-economic factors bearing upon the problem. Uses of Graphite: Natural graphite as marketed exhibits a wide range of properties, which determine the uses to which it is put. The most essential uses are in the manufacture of crucibles and related refractory articles, in lubricants and packing materials, and in the manufacture of batteries, foundry facings, pencils, and carbon brushes. Numerous specifications covering the mineral in its various applications must be met by producers and processors of graphite. The problem of supply is therefore not simply one of procuring a sufficient total tonnage, but the more difficult problem of procuring enough of each different grade to meet foreseeable needs. The amount of graphite required by American industry is not large. Ordinarily only a few thousand tons of strategic grades are consumed annually, yet the elimination of this small tonnage would have serious effects in several industries. Strategic Graphite: Since World War I, 60 to 100 pct of the country&apos;s annual supply of graphite has been furnished from imports. At present, natural amorphous graphite for use in pencils and batteries is produced largely from American-owned mines in Mexico. Graphite for foundry facings is obtained from a number of sources. Neither grade is a serious problem. High purity graphite for carbon brushes and for pencil leads, however, is imported, largely from Ceylon, in the form of amorphous lump graphite. Most of the flake graphite used for crucibles and related refractory articles is likewise imported, largely from Madagascar, and much of the lubricant and packing grade graphite used by industry is obtained from the same source. The strateg&apos;ic grades of graphite are therefore amorphous lump of the Ceylon type, crucible flake, and flake suitable for lubricants and packing. Ceylon lump and Madagascar flake have for many years been accepted as standard by domestic consumers of graphite, and various essential manufacturing processes are geared to the use of graphite from these sources. Ceylon graphite as marketed is classified into several grades based on particle size and purity. Processing methods are said to be simple, but the products marketed are carefully graded and are consistent in their characteristics, an important matter to the consumer. Nearly all the graphite produced in Ceylon is from veins. Resources are reported to be large, labor is cheap, production costs are low, and world competition is slight—factors accounting for the commercial success of the graphite mining industry in Ceylon. Madagascar is reported to have deposits of the Ceylon type, but its output consists almost entirely of flake. Madagascar graphite as received in the U. S. is further processed by importing organizations, and a large number of grades are produced to meet industry requirements, especially those for crucible flake and for lubricant and packing grade flake. A tutorial account of the tunnel effect between metal electrodes separated by a thin insulating film is presented. Energy diagrams of metal-insulator -metal sandwiches are briefly discussed, and the isothermal and thermal J-V characteristics for symmetric and asymmetric tunnel junctions are derived from a generalized expression. Experimental data from tunnel junctions are presented, and it is shown how, correlation between theory and experiment permits a determination of some of the oxide properties. Finally, the barrier heights in AT-Al2O3-A1 junctions determined by various inr3estigators are discussed. The object of this paper is to give a tutorial account of the electric-tunnel effect between metal electrodes separated by a thin insulating film and to illustrate its utility in the study of metal-oxide interfaces. This paper will emphasize the theoretical aspects of the electric-tunnel effect: however, a brief account of the more recent experimental work will be presented. A more comprehensive experimental study of the tunnel effect will be presented in the following paper by Drs. Pollack and Morris, see p. 497. We will open with a discussion of the energy diagrams for metal-insulator-metal junctions and what we mean by the electric-tunnel effect. Following this is an account of the theoretical studies of Sommerfeld and Bethe, and Holm, and the recently reported calculations on symmetric and asymmetric junctions using the generalized formula. The theoretical presentation is concluded with calculations on the temperature dependence of the tunnel J-V characteristic. In the experimental section, it is shown how barrier heights and thicknesses are determined by comparing the experimental data with the theory. Finally, the results of various investigators on the determination of the barrier heights in Al-Al2O,-A1 systems are discussed. I) POTENTIAL BARRIERS BETWEEN CLOSELY SPACED ELECTRODES Since it is necessary to supply energy to a metal in order to observe electron emission from its surface, it is evident that the potential energy of an electron within a metal is lower than that of an electron at rest outside the metal. It follows, then, that the electron must undergo a change in potential as it crosses the metal-vacuum interface. In the Sommerfeld1 free-electron theory of metals it is assumed that the free electrons, the electrons responsible for the electrical characteristics of metals, move in a constant potential environment in the metal, and are contained within the metal by a potential barrier at the metal-vacuum interface. It will be evident that the idea of a constant potential environment is a very idealized model, since the potential energy of an electron is influenced by all of the atoms and the other electrons within the metal; however, its use is justified by the many excellent results it gives.2 Fig. l (a) is the energy diagram of the model envisaged by Sommerfeld; the metal is represented by a potential-energy well of depth V,; the vacuum level represents the energy of an electron at rest outside the metal. At 0°K the electrons, which exist in pairs in discrete energy levels, fill up the well to an energy ?, the Fermi level. The distance, Vo - ?, from the Fermi level to the vacuum level is known as the work function of the metal, and represents the minimum energy required to free electrons from the interior of the metal at 0°K.

The practical importance of a knowledge of the rates of diffusion of carbon and of alloying elements in steel has often been pointed out.l,13 This importance lies chiefly, though by no means only, in the study of carbufizing and in the study of reactions involved in the eutectoid inversion in steel. The present paper is one of a series in which the rates of diffusion of carbon and of alloying elements in ?-Fe and their mutual effects are measured with precision. The present paper reports the results of measurements of diffusion coefficients D of manganese in ?-Fe over wide ranges of temperature, and concentration, and of the effect of carbon and impurities and of grain size upon these diffusion coefficients.‡ Data on the rate of diffusion of manganese in ?-Fe have been reported by Fry2 and by Paschke and Hauttmann.3 Claussen4 calculated the diffusion coefficient D from Fry&apos;s data as 3 X 10-10 sq, cm. per set. at 960º, which will be shown to be incorrect by many orders of magnitude. Paschke and Hauttmann gave a rough value of 9.6 x 10-8 Sq. cm. per set. at 14000. Neither of these workers considered the variation of D with concentration and with temperature, and neither studied the effect of carbon. Method and Materials Method.—The method employed is identical with that used earlier.5 Owing to the volatility of manganese and the consequent loss of manganese from the outer surfaces of the welded diffusion bars, these surfaces were discarded. The diffusion anneals were performed in argon, except One (test 18) in which hydrogen was employed for purposes noted below. The temperatures reported are accurate to about 3" and constant within 1°C; the diffusion times are reported to the nearest half hour. The specimens were furnace-coo1ed after the diffusion ation, at about 2° per min. Layers, usually 0.004 in. thick, parallel to the welded interface, were machined from the specimens after the diffusion anneal and analyzed for manganese to 0.I Per cent Mn; the distances of these layers from the interface was measured to ±0.0002 in. The concentration-penetration curves obtained were analyzed by both the Grube and the Matano solutions.8 The D values calculated by these two methods do not differ appreci000. The Grube solution was used except in tests in which the effect of concentration upon D was greater than so per cent; in such cases the Matano method, which explicitly provides for the variation of D with concentration,&apos; is the more reliable. In general, the number of layers machined from the zones of variable composition were large enough to permit the use of the average layer composition as that of the center of the layer. IN an earlier investigation by Jaffe and Buffum,&apos; a time-temperature transformation diagram for isothermal temper embrittlement of an SAE 3140 steel showed some suggestion of two overlapping "noses." These authors mentioned, as a possible explanation, that their specimens embrittled at 525°C were slightly softer than expected, perhaps because of some slight unknown variation in tempering treatment. Because a double nose would be of considerable importance in elucidating the mechanism of the temper brittleness reaction,&apos; it appeared worthwhile to redetermine the portion of the diagram near 525°C. The same heat of SAE 3140 steel was used as in the previous work, and experimental procedures were the same.&apos; Blanks were austenitized 1 hr at 900°C, water-quenched, tempered 1 hr at 675°C, and water-quenched. Groups were then embrittled isothermally at the temperatures and for the times shown in Table I, and water-quenched. For comparison, one series was tempered various times at 675°C, water-quenched, and given no further treatment. V-notched Charpy impact specimens machined from the blanks were tested over a range of temperatures. Energy absorption and percentage of fibrous fracture were plotted vs test temperature for each group, utilizing both the new data and those for the same treatment obtained in the earlier work,&apos; except that the earlier data at 525°C were discarded.* are given in Table I. After a small correction (-0.28°C/BHN) for the variation of hardness" from Rockwell C24, the transition temperatures were plotted against embrittling time for each embrittling temperature, using the data of Table I for the range of treatments covered there, and using previous dataL for other treatments. By cross-plotting, Fig. 1 was finally obtained. It appears from this figure that if there are two noses to the time-temperature-transformation diagram for isothermal temper embrittlement of SAE 3140 steel, the upper nose must lie above 575°C. As interest had been primarily in the region near 525°C, a thorough study of embrittlement above 575°C was not made. Fig. 1 shows that such a study is needed, especially since preliminary measurements at the tempering temperature of 675°C reveal much more rapid embrittlement than would be expected from the data at lower temperatures. The transition temperature increased, approximately, as the logarithm of the tempering time (about 81/2°C, after correction for hardness, for each doubling of the time).& Since three tensile specimens tempered 240 hr at 675°C and water-quenched had an average yield-tensile ratio of 0.844, with 70.7 pct reduction of area, it is assumed1 that the tempering temperature is not above Ae1. The omission of a quench-and-reheat operation below Ae1, for the groups tempered at 675°C, as compared to groups embrittled at lower temperatures, should not affect results." More detailed investigation of embrittlement above 575°C is now under way.

The lattice parameters of zirconium and zirconium-oxygen solid solutions (hcp) were determined from measurements of back-reflection X-ray photograms obtained at 29°C using a symmetrical focussing camera. The following linear equations between parameters (c,a) in angstrom units (10-8 cm) and atom ratio (m) of oxygen to zirconium were obtained: c = 5.14764 + 0.2077m a =3.23168 + 0.1099m. The linear equations given are valid over the range 0 to 5 at. Pct 0. The accuracy of individual parameter measurements approaches the limiting accuracy determined by the spectral broadening of the incident characteristic radiation, and exceeds the accuracy of previously reported values. THE present work was undertaken in order to determine the lattice parameters of zirconium-oxygen solid solutions with an accuracy that allows quantitative determination of oxygen in zirconium. The results indicate that this is possible if very careful measurements are made, since the parameter change is only a few hundredths of a percent per at. pct 0.1, 2 In the present investigation the desired accuracy was achieved with large-grained samples using a back-reflection focussing camera and maintaining good temperature control during exposure. In addition a digital computer was used for calculation of the parameters by means of an analytical extrapolation.37 Suitable diffraction photograms were obtained from large-grained samples by using a modification of the technique described by Graf and Monteil.5 This consists of simultaneous rotation and oscillation of the specimen about two mutually perpendicular axes during exposure. Whereas, normally the upper limit of grain size is about 50 µ for useable diffraction photograms, this technique allows extending the upper limit of grain-size to exposure of a single crystal. EXPERIMENTAL Preparation of Alloys for X-ray Diffraction—Zir-conium, designated as hafnium-free, Westinghouse "Grade 1," was swaged from l/2-in.-diam crystal bar to 3/8-in.-diam rods. Substantially all of the hydrogen was removed from the zirconium by annealing at 1200°C in a high dynamic vacuum. The rods were then swaged to 0.2 in. diam without intermediate annealing, and 2 in. lengths were cut for alloying with oxygen. Samples for chemical analysis were taken from portions of the rods between each 2 in. length. Chemical analysis of the dehydroge-nated zirconium is given in Table I. Commercial tank oxygen (99.5 pct 0) was condensed in a liquid nitrogen-cooled trap, and part of the condensate was slowly reevaporated into 5-liter storage flasks. Nitrogen remained as a reactive impurity, and the calculated maximum increase in nitrogen content after a 5 at. pct 0 addition to zirconium was 50 ppm by weight. However, chemical analyses of several of the prepared alloys indicated that the maximum increase in nitrogen content was 10 ppm. The storage flasks, a Sieverts-type gas burette and manometer, and associated traps, pumps, and pressure gauges were connected through a glass high-vacuum manifold to comprise the gas addition system. The brass was turned between centers in a lathe to a diameter of 0.5965 inches. 3. After the brass was cleaned, it was electroplated with pure copper to a diameter of about one inch. 4. The sample was heated slowly to 400°C. under reduced pressure and held at that temperature for 4 hr. to remove occluded gases. It was then cooled to room temperature. 5. The sample was heated to 780°C. ± 3°C. and held at that temperature for different lengths of time; then quenched. Samples were cut off each time after quenching. Metallographic samples 1/4 in. thick were removed at I hr., 6 hr., 24 hr., 96 hr. and 701 hr. After 96 and 701 hr. samples of about I in. were removed for X-ray analysis. 6. The metallographic samples were polished on the cross section and photomicrographs were taken. 7. The I-in. samples were polished and etched on both ends. With the aid of a microscope each was carefully mounted in a four-jaw chuck in a lathe, so that they could be accurately bored for an arbor. 8. Turnings were taken for each X-ray sample. THE effect of grain size on the mechanical properties of the bcc metals has been a subject of intensive theoretical and experimental study.&apos;-l5 Quantitative relationships have been established experimentally between yield stress and grain size and between the ductile-brittle transition temperature and grain size in a number of metals.6"15 Much significance has therefore been attached theoretically to the grain size dependence. In all these experiments, different grain sizes were always achieved by annealing specimens at various temperatures. The implicit assumption was that any change in the dislocation substructure or in the distribution of impurities which might occur simultaneously with the production of various grain sizes had only a negligible effect on the mechanical properties. The validity of this assumption, however, is questionable. transformation in iron-nickel alloys is actually an extraneous phenomenon due to inadvertent compositional changes in the martensite if the heating rate is not sufficiently rapid. This complication can be avoided by up-quenching for the reversal treatment,5 and then the stabilization does not appear. Clearly, the lattice imperfections and strengthening produced by the reverse transformation are not responsible for the marked stabilization which has been observed by other investigators in these alloys. Data will be presented in this note to show that, at least in recrystallized tungsten of commercial purity, the difference in the ductile-brittle transition temperature of specimens annealed at various temperatures is more a result of a variation in the distribution of impurities rather than of the difference in grain size produced by the anneal. Ductile-brittle transition temperatures in tension were determined on powder-metallurgy tungsten specimens recrystallized at various temperatures. Tensile specimens having a gage length of 1.50 in. and gage diam of 0.18 in. were recrystallized at 1450°, 2000°, 2350°, 2550°, 2750°, or 2800" for 30 min in a vacuum furnace at a pressure of 1 x 10"5 mm of Hg and then tested at a constant extension rate of 8 x 10 per sec in an argon atmosphere from 100" to 800". Typical quantitative analyses of impurities are given in the Table. These results show that, within the precision of the analyses, see Table, annealing did not result in any detectable change in the impurity contents of the specimens, nor was there any detectable difference in purity between specimens having large differences in grain size annealed at the same temperatures . The results of the tensile tests yielded three distinct ductile-brittle transition curves approximately 225&apos; apart. As shown in Fig. 1, data of specimens annealed at 1450°C and those of specimens annealed at 2000°C (O) fell on Curve A. Data of specimens annealed at 2350" and 2550°C fell on Curve B, and those of specimens annealed at 2750" and 2800°C fell on Curve C. The decrease in ductility with increase in annealing temperature became so pronounced that one third of the specimens annealed at 2750" and two thirds of the specimens

THE selection of the proper size of grinding mill for a given installation has long been a subject of discussion by mill manufacturers, consulting engineers, and their clients. It would be presumptuous for the author to propose a simple cure-all. Instead this paper describes a method that has been used over a period of years to determine mill size with a reasonable degree of accuracy. Furthermore, this method claims no theoretical background, for ball milling, as practiced today, is still an art. The selection of the proper size and type of mill must, therefore, be made on an empirical basis. A ball mill, in order to grind, must deliver power through its grinding media to the material to be ground. Assuming that a mill is properly supplied with grinding media, ore pulp, and power, the amount of grinding done is closely proportional to the power expended. With this as a basic premise we can, for the moment, forget about type of mill (i.e., overflow, low-level mill, or other design) and base our calculation of mill size on the total power required to grind a ton of a particular ore from a given size of feed to a given size of product. When this is determined the type and size of mill, its speed, and the weight of the load of grinding media can be selected to absorb this amount of power. DEVELOPMENT OF TECHNIQUE Some years ago, W. L. Maxson, F. Cadena, and F. C. Bond, working in the Minerals Research Laboratory of Allis-Chalmers Co., Milwaukee, developed and described a laboratory technique for comparing grindability (or relative ease of grinding) of various ores at different mesh sizes of grind.1 Additional papers2 have described the work done since that time, and the most recent paper3 summarizes results for hundreds of tests on many ores and materials. The essentials of the testing method are: a I a by 12-in. laboratory mill operating at a constant speed of rotation, using a constant volume of ore, and a constant ball load having a relatively constant grinding surface. Tests are run at 250 per cent circulating load with the feed, circulating load and products screened on calibrated Tyler standard screens. Certain ores from operating mills, representing various mineralogical types, were selected for reference and designated "standard ores." In most cases, detailed studies of the grinding circuits were made when samples of mill feed were taken for grindability tests. Each analysis formed a basis for comparison of the grindability in the laboratory with actual power requirements for a particular grinding circuit. In addition, a critical study was made, to evaluate the differences in the various grinding circuits so that two or more field installations having different layouts (single-stage grinding, two-stage grinding, or others), and using mills of various diameters operating at various speeds with differing circulating loads, etc., could be compared. C. E. Homer and H. Plummer1 have described a sensitive and at the same time a very simple technique for locating the solidus curves in a number of alloys of tin. Their method consists simply in noting the temperature at which a specimen of the alloy ruptures under the influence of a light bending force. Although this method is not new, it has been little used for this purpose in the past; nevertheless, it appears so attractive in its possibilities of speed, simplicity, and precision that the investigations presently to be described were undertaken to verify its merits. The redetermination of the solidus and eutectic temperatures of the lead-antimony system was employed as a medium 0f experimentation. New values obtained in this way are believed to be sufficiently precise to warrant a revision of the currently accepted lead-antimony phase diagram (Fig. I). Determinations of the solidus of the lead-rich lead-antimony alloy series have been published by R. S. Dean2 and by E. E. Schumacher and F. C. Nix.3 Their points are represented in Fig. I. In their work the solidus was not located at antimony concentrations greater than 2 per cent; the curve was presumed to meet the eutectic horizontal at an antimony concentration of about 2.5 per cent. In the present studies the solidus has been traced to 3.5 per cent, where the eutectic horizontal is intersected (Table I and Fig. I). Identification of the kinds of orientation relationships that may exist among crystals is an important problem in the metallurgical field. As an aid to its solution standard orientations of several orders of twins would be very useful for rapid analyses to discover high-order as well as low-order twin relationships. Although data have been published that give orientations for three generations of twins, these data are not readily useful in the form presented; i.e., in a stereo-graphic projection with one pole per orientation.&apos; However, accurate data based on calculations of the positions of all {1001 planes for such groups would be very useful when presented in tabular form. Therefore, calculations have been made for a group of four orders of twins and the data are listed in Table 3. Illustrative applications are considered briefly, with the idea of pointing out what may be done with large groups of orientations. Method of Computing Orientation OF a Twin It is common practice to describe the orientation of a crystal in terms of the positions on a stereographic net of the poles of certain planes of the crystal. A single position on a net may be given in terms of two angle variables, two sets of which appear in the following equations: Polar Net Wulff Net x = , sin ?p cos Fbp x = r COS ?w y = r sin ?p sin Fp y = r sin ?w cos Fw % = r cos ?p z = r sin ?w, sin +, The three numbers z, y and z determine a length r as well as a direction (0, 4) in an X, Y, Z coordinate system. In the present case, r will be set equal to (h2 + k2 + L2)1/2, where h, k and I are the usual Miller indices for a crystallographic plane, a restriction that facilitates determination of the positions of poles of new planes from those of old or known ones,2 as will become evident later. Furthermore, since twinned lattices have certain planes in common, it is an easy matter to determine the orientation of a twin of a crystal if the orientation of the crystal itself is known. We start therefore with a crystal of known orientation (positions of three {Ioo} poles given) and determine where the cube poles occur in first, second, third and fourth-order twins. Methods for identifying twinned lattices and for making the calculations to find the orientation of a twin have been published.3,4&apos; Reference 4 will be illustrated in the calculation of the orientation of a twin, even though this method differs from the one used by the writer in obtaining the following data on four orders of twins.
