The rolling and recrystallization textures in 300°C rolled uranium sheet were investigated using a Geiger counter diffractometer with the modified Schulz reflection technique. Seven sections of sheet material were used in order to obtain sufficient data for quantitative pole figures by the reflection technique. A special integrating specimen table was used for obtaining and recording the data automatically. The rolling texture was described in terms of several "ideal orientations" in which the stronger orientations have either the (1103 or (010) poles in the vicinity of the rolling direction. The recrystallization texture of the sheet uranium was also described by several "ideal orientations" which are somewhat different, except in one case, than the as-rolled "ideal orientations." RESULTS of an X-ray study of the deformation texture in rolled uranium rods were reported by Harris' in which a concentration of (010) and (110) poles was found in the rolling direction. More recently Seymour," Mitchell 'and Rowland,3 and Adam and Stephenson4 reported results obtained on uranium sheet rolled under various conditions of tem- perature and amount of reduction. Since the results of Seymour as opposed to those of the two other groups of investigators are not in full agreement, it seemed justifiable to publish the present data, obtained concurrently with the previously mentioned investigations.'-' The results with rolled and re-crystallized uranium sheet were also included in the paper, since they appear to be more complete than the only previously published texture data on recrystallized sheeL3 In the present investigation great care was taken to maintain complete separation of the reflections from different crystal planes, even in cases where the 20 angles differed from each other by less than

Most mineralized areas in the central San Juan Mountains, Colorado, are associated with the youngest subsidence structures in a large volcanic cauldron complex that formed concurrently with eruption of the surrounding ash-flow field. Two local types have been recognized: (1) fissure-vein deposits along faults characterized by relatively late movement, and (2) hydrothermally altered and mineralized areas associated with postsubsidence Fisher Quartz Latite centers. The first type has provided most production in the past; the potential of the second type has yet to be adequately tested.

PHOSPHORUS combines with copper in various proportions, forming true alloys, some of which are of commercial importance. These materials find wide application as deoxidizers and as a means of introducing phosphorus into other alloys, as in phosphor-bronze. Phosphor-coppers containing 10 and 15 per cent. of phosphorus are the commercial grades that are most generally offered. Each has certain advantages when used in making other alloys. The 10 per cent. grade of phosphor-copper has an advantage over the 15 per cent. in that it has a much lower melting point and can be prepared by certain methods with a much lower loss in phosphorus. The 15 per cent. grade has the advantage of lower freight rates per unit of phosphorus and, by the method to be described, a uniform product can be prepared with practically no loss of phosphorus. Alloys of copper and phosphorus containing any desired percentage of phosphorus lower than 15 per cent. can be prepared by melting together the requisite amounts of copper and 15 per cent. phosphor-copper. Processes for making phosphor-copper may be divided into two classes as follows: (1) Those depending on the smelting of phosphate rock or superphosphate of calcium with copper or copper-bearing materials, and coal or other carbonaceous material; (2) those depending on the direct combination of metallic copper and elemental phosphorus. A number of formulas for preparing phosphor-copper according to the first method have been published. The Metal, Industry' gives-the following: Superphosphate of calcium, 60 lb.; granulated copper, 301b.; finely powdered coal, 10 lb. Similar formulas are given by Brannt2 and others, and detail 'variations are covered by patents, such as those of L A Jeffs3 and H A Webster.4

The modulus of elasticity and yield strength of commercially pure, annealed titanium sheet was investigated at room temperature as a function of strain rate and direction of loading. The value of E varied with direction of measuremeni in the sheet but was unaffected by strain rate in the range 0.04 x 10-to 10-2min-1. The yield strength increased with increase it2 strain rate and varied with specimen orientation. VALUES of the modulus of elasticity, E, in tension for commercially pure titanium have been reported at from 14 to 20Xl06 psi.' Reasons suggested for this variation have been a) composition, b) strain rate, c) texturing, and d) creep. For example, alloys of titanium with aluminum, manganese, and nitrogen have yielded modulus values of from 12.5 to 16.8 x lo6 psi at room temperature.' It was shown by Klier that the modulus in titanium plate was sensi-tive to strain rate. while Dotson and kattus meas- ured variations in E as the strain rate was increased from 3X to 60 min-l. For RC-7OA, 0.040-in. titanium sheet at room temperature Dotson and Kattus found that the average values of E, for specimens in the rolling direction, increased from 14.7 to 16.0 X lo6 psi as the strain rate increased. Simultaneously, the 0.2 pct yield strength increased from 74,700 to 95,700 psi for the same specimens. Differences in yield strength and E have been reported as a function of directionality in titanium sheet.= Dotson and Kattus report such an effect, and Feola6 found in annealed titanium sheet marked anisotropy in tensile strength, yield strength, reduction in area and elongation at room temperature, with

Age hardening response of a Mg-Th-Zr alloy has been studied at temperatures in the range 60° to 450°C. Transmission microscopy revealed clustering of thorium atoms at low aging temperatures, supporting a previous report of GP zone formation. Peak strengthening, which is observed at 325°C, is due to the formation of a coherent, ordered, DO19 type superlattice structure, of Hobable composition Mg3Th, as plates parallel to the matrix prism planes. These plates later reveal a Laves phase structure of composition Mg2Th. The equilibrium Mg4Th phase begins to precipitate in two different forms at an early stage, competitively with the Mg2Th plates. RECENT work on the Mg-Th system indicated that, unlike most magnesium-base alloys, complex precipitation phenomena may be occurring. The partial phase diagram of the Mg-Th system indicates that an equilibrium phase, Mg5Th, is the sole intermediate phase.' sturkey,' however, has reported, using X-ray and electron diffraction techniques, that a metastable fcc Laves phase, Mg2Th, precedes the formation of the equilibrium compound, which he identified as closer in composition to Mg4Th. Murakami et al.3 reported that the equilibrium phase precipitates preferentially on grain boundaries and dislocations in a Mg-1.7 wt pct Th alloy; Kent and Kelly4 aged a more dilute alloy, Mg-0.5 wt pct Th, for 4 days at 220°C and found similar results. In addition, they reported that a platelike phase with a structure close to that of the magnesium matrix forms perpendicular to the basal plane and is probably ordered. Research on a Mg-4 wt pct Th alloy by electrical resistance measurements and transmission electron microscopy has suggested that GP zones may form at low aging temperatures.3 However, the electron micrographs purporting to show this phenomenon were not conclusive. In view of the fragmentary evidence concerning the nature of the precipitation processes in the various Mg-Th alloys, an aging study was undertaken to clarify the characteristics of the various precipitates which form and to correlate the mechanical properties of the system with the direct precipitate-dislocation interactions. The latter results are presented elsewhere.' The purpose of this paper is, therefore, to discuss the precipitation sequence in this system. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Sheet stock (0.060 and 0.010 in. thick) of a commercial Mg-3.93 wt pct Th-0.42 wt pct Zr alloy (designated HK3lA) similar to that studied by sturkey2 was supplied through the courtesy of Dr. S. L. Couling of Dow Metal Products Co. Zirconium does not enter into any precipitation reactions,' but is present primarily as a grain refiner. The alloy was chill cast, warm rolled to 0.090 in. thick stock, and then finally reduced by a combination of hot and cold rolling. The alloy chemistry is given in Table I. This material was solution treated at 580°C for 4 hr in a dry CO2 atmosphere, and then water quenched. Material in this condition was fairly clear of precipitate particles and was fully recrystallized. Aging at temperatures less than 200°C was accomplished by immersing the alloy in a silicone oil bath; for higher temperatures, aging was done in a salt pot. Age hardening treatments were conducted at 60°, 80°, 105°, 135°, 160°, 250°, 325°, 350°, and 450°C for times ranging from 5 min to 400 hr. Hardness tests were performed on chemically polished 0.060-in.-thick blanks of solution treated material which were aged at the various temperatures for increasing lengths of time. For aging temperatures above 150°C the Rockwell Superficial 30T scale was employed, while samples hardened at temperatures below 150°C were monitored with the 45T scale. Each data point consists of at least three separate readings. Yield stresses also were measured at room temperature on both 0.060 and 0.010 in. sheet specimens aged at 325°C. The aged foils were thinned by the window method in a solution of 80 pct absolute alcohol and 20 pct concentrated perchloric acid (70 pct) maintained at 0°C. A stainless steel cathode was used and the applied voltage was 10 to 15 v. Thinned samples were rinsed in distilled water and pure methanol. After the me-thanol rinse the thin foils were quickly dried between filter paper. Foils prepared by the above method were examined in a Hitachi HU11B electron microscope operating at 100 kv. RESULTS A) Hardness. The hardness data are depicted in Figs. 1 and 2. Peak strengthening occurs at 325°C after aging about 6 min, see Fig. 1. Significant strengthening is achieved also at 350°C, but aging at 450°C produces only softening. The stepped curve at 250°C indicates that a complicated precipitation process may be occurring at that temperature. Fig. 2 suggests that at least two hardening mechanisms exist since the lowest temperature hardness peaks are displaced to the left of the peaks obtained at 135° and 105°C. A great deal of scatter is observed at long times in all cases due to magnesium surface degradation caused by the silicone oil bath. B) Identification of the Strengthening Precipitates. The structure formed atlowagingtemperatures (c10O°C) was not clearly resolvable by transmission microscopy. The only bright-field evidence for a change in structure was a mottled appearance which could be observed at extinction contours, as shown in Fig. 3(a), and the disappearance of this effect when dislocations produced under the influence of the electron beam passed through the matrix, as noted in

Attempts have been made to predict the volumetric and phase behavior of naturally occurring hydrocarbon mix-turesl-6 but these methods have not been extended to the higher pressures and tem-peratures that are currently encountered in some producing formations. Furthermore, the methods of prediction at present avail-able have not been tested in a sufficient number of cases to ensure their applica-bility to all naturally occurring hydrocar-bon mixtures, even at the lower pressures and temperatures. For these reasons the behavior of a number of hydrocarbon mix-tures from a field in which the subsurface pressures are above 4500 lb. per sq. in.t and the temperatures are in the neighbor-hood of 250°F. was investigated. Method The objective of this program was to determine the volumetric behavior of ma-terial as it existed in the reservoir as a function of pressure, temperature and com-position. Strictly speaking, this cannot be accomplished in any simple fashion. How- ever, the variations in composition that are encountered within a producing reservoir may be approximated roughly by means of mixtures made up of two arbitrarily chosen constituents. Experience indicates that the liquid and gas phases from a high-pressure gas trap afford a simple source of material for this purpose. Throughout this discus-sion the samples of the gas phase and liquid phase from the production trap will be called the "trap-gas sample" and the "trap-liquid sample," respectively. The volumetric behavior of both of the trap samples was determined throughout the temperature interval between 100" and 250°F. at pressures up to 5000 lb. per sq. in. In addition, the behavior of eight different mixtures containing varying proportions of the two trap samples was studied throughout the same temperature and pressure intervals. The experimental results yielded information concerning the specific volume of the material as a function of pressure, temperature and the relative quantity of the trap samples. The relative amount of each of the paraffin hydrocarbons of lower molecular weight than n-hexane was determined for each of the trap samples. In addition, the specific weight, viscosity and average molecular weight of the hexanes-and-heavier fraction of the trap-liquid sample were determined as well as similar information for each of five fractions separated from this material by distillation. From these data the weight fractions of each of the components from methane through pentane were determined for the trap samples and eight systematically chosen mixtures. The mickel-activated sintering of tungsten occurs in two stages of densification. A kinetic analysis of the second stage has been based on an appropriate model of the process. As in the first stage, the rate-controlling mechanism for the second stage is also the solution of tungsten in the nickel carrier phase. The transition from the relatively rapid first-stage results from the spherozdization of pores and the initiation of grain growth. Finer grain size due to higher-nickel content leads to more rapid and higher degrees of densification 1 HE sintering of tungsten is accelerated by small additions of nickel, cobalt, and iron.' Experimental evidence in detail has shown that nickel-coated, hydrogen-reduced tungsten powder may be sintered to more than 90 pet of theoretical density at l100o C.2, 3 Simultaneously, a kinetic analysis of the process showed that it took place in two distinct stages. In the first stage, nickel evidently served as a carrier phase through which tungsten atoms could move. This stage was kinetically similar to the "solution-precipitation" step postulated when the carrier phase is a liquid,4 although in the Ni-W case, there is no evidence of the existence of a liquid phase either in equilibrium phase relationships or in microstruc-tures at the temperatures under consideration. It has been shown that this stage corresponds to a process which is rate controlled by a phase boundary reaction.3 More recent evidence has been presented5 showing that after the initial rapid stage of sintering, densification continues in the final stage but at a slower rate, although no mechanism for this stage of densification was defined. An analysis of later stages of densification in solid state sintering has been presented,6 but it is not directly applicable in the present case of activated or carrier phase sintering. It is the purpose of this investigation to study the final stage of nickel activated tungsten sintering in greater detail The effect of varying nickel content has been examined, and a possible kinetic mechanism defined. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE AND RESULTS Commercial hydrogen-reduced tungsten powder from Wah-Chmg Corp., having a nominal particle size of1 µ and a B.E.T. specific surface area of 5500 sq. cm per g was mixed with aqueous solutions of hydrated nickel nitrate in proportions sufficient to produce nominal compositions of 0.25, 1, 3, and 5 wt pet Ni. This solution was then evaporated to dry-ness at approximately 150" C for 15 hr. Following evaporation, the resulting powder cake was broken with a mortar and pestle and reduced in hydrogen at 800oC for 1 hr. Following reduction, the powder

This paper describes a method to provide identification of particular depths in a borehole through the use of radioactive markers. The correlation of a marker, placed in the wall of a borehole, with known points of the electrical log and with the casing collars in the cased hole permits accurate positioning of tools with respect to a formation, regardless of absolute depth. Such a process is particularly useful in gun perforation of a casing in a well. Technique and equipment are discussed and illustrated. Examples are given of practical application in the field. Introduction During the past decade the search for petroleum has increased the importance of testing zones at depths in wells which have become progressively deeper. The development of new techniques, such as electrical logging, has permitted the identification of producing formations which consist of comparatively thin strata. When thin beds are to be produced at great depths, the problem of positioning tools accurately to place the well in production becomes acute.l Continuous consideration is being given in the petroleum industry towards the improvement of depth measurements in a borehole. The accuracy in absolute depth measurements, whether made in an open or cased hole, whether determined by a cable or a drill pipe, depends upon a number of factors, such as tension, temperature, and calibration. For example, the effects of tension from the weight of 10,000 ft of drill pipe and the thermal expansion of this length . of pipe, where its average temperature has increased SO"', will Produce an elongation as much as 8 ft.2 The effects Of such factors can be minimized through the use of care in depth measurements, the application of corrections based on experience, and continuous calibration or checking. The fact that different methods and different tools are used to determine the depths of formations in wells will sometimes give rise to a difference between measurements. It is evident that an important requirement in a well is the ability to locate at will any subsurface point. While absolute depth measurements have ion in recent years, it is reassuring to have other means to verify, for example, that a casing is perforated at a particular place with reference to a zone within a formation. Such a check on measurements may be had by placing a reference marker at a point known with respect to the electrical log of the borehole. That point is usually chosen to be in proximity to the 'One to be perforated. Thus, only short in depth measurements are made and any inaccuracy becomes very small and of minor importance' The use of reference markers located at fixed points predetermined in each zone where future operations are contemplated enables the operator to position any tool

DISCUSSION I. M. Symonds, (Cia. Minera de Penoles, Monterrey, N. L., Mexico)—Messrs. Boeke and Gunther have written most interesting papers describing their zinc de-leading operations. Mr. Gunther was kind enough to show me his operation last fall. Aside from the excellent results, I was most impressed by the ease of control. I had expected a difficult operation requiring careful control and supervision, but found one requiring little attention. The only disappointing fact of the separation is the poor copper recovery in the concentrate of the delead-ing float. The final zinc concentrate still has about 3 pct chalcopyrite, assuming the copper is chalcopyrite, and adversely affects the zinc grade. If the copper mineral is free, the poor recovery is probably due to the high cyanide concentration. Fortunately, about 75 pct of the copper is recovered before the pulp goes to the zinc circuit. Mr. Gunther's remarks about proper cyanide to zinc sulphate ratios cannot be overemphasized. Although our experience has been confined mostly to the conventional lead-zinc separation, we have found these ratios most important, and more important in the mill than in the laboratory. The laboratory appears to give optimum results over a wider range of reagent control than the mill, especially in regard to the effect of cyanide. In handling relatively high grade ores in the mill we usually find that ratios of cyanide to zinc sulphate of 1 to 10 or 20 or higher work best. Where there is a substantial amount of chalcopyrite present it has been noted that cyanide in the range of 0.02 to 0.10 lb per ton of ore is often beneficial in zinc rejection and possibly in copper recovery in the lead concentrate, while larger amounts, say 0.20 to 0.25 lb per ton, will float more zinc and cause a serious rejection of chalcopyrite. On an ore with 15 to 20 pct zinc content we have had to use 0.8 to 1.2 pounds of zinc sulphate per ton of ore with the above cyanide to obtain optimum results. Some time ago we made a laboratory study following Parral and Santa Barbara practice on an ore which had never a very satisfactory rejection of zinc in the lead concentrate. The results were not encouraging and a mill test was not run. Since then the study has been reopened using in the laboratory fresh zinc concentrate from the mill instead of one made in the laboratory. A reasonably clean lead float from the zinc concentrate was obtained. It has been checked several times and each time the zinc concentrate made in the mill responds and the one made in the labora-

Some time ago we made a laboratory study following Parral and Santa Barbara practice on an ore which had never a very satisfactory rejection of zinc in the lead concentrate. The results were not encouraging and a mill test was not run. Since then the study has been reopened using in the laboratory fresh zinc concentrate from the mill instead of one made in the laboratory. Many theories have been advanced to explain the phenomena of elastic and plastic deformation. The object of this report is to present a mechanism for deformation, not radically differing from existing theories, but embodying.certain principles and concepts of these theories. This proposed theory cannot be the complete answer to the age-old problem of deformation but it is believed that it will be a step further in the proper direction. The plastic properties of solids have recently been reviewed by Seitz and Read.' ZenerZ has reviewed and correlated the existing work on the anelasticity of metals. With these and others3'4'5 resent theories of deformation are well-known. Of the many theories now extant, those receiving most attention have been proffered by Griffith,6 Becker,l Smekal,8 Polanyilg Orowanlo and Taylor.'' Although differing quite widely in details, these theories are based more or less on a common principle of flaws or dislocations that exist in the crystal lattice. The effect of stress concentrations surrounding a flaw or crack has been treated most recently by Fisher and Hollomon.12 The various authors differ as to the exact nature of the flaws or dislocations, the causes of their appearance, or the manner in which they initiate slip. All of the theories agree that the number of dislocations increases with progressing deformation. It is universally agreed that the shearing process is not a simple gliding of ideally perfect atomic lattice planes. It is also agreed that the "macroscopic" process of gliding, or slip, is brought about by the spreading of a large number of locally initiated "glide steps" through the whole crystal. The occurrence of these "glide steps" is closely related to the presence of some kind of deviations from the "ideal" lattice structure, even in the undeformed crystal. These deviations are overcome ''one at a time," in a manner of speaking, due to some stress-concentrating effect.13 Proposed Theory Many solids show a continuously increasing deformation if subjected to a constant load of suitable magnitude in an extended range of temperature for a sufficient time. This deformation, or flow, may be said to be due, in general, to the tendency of the atoms or molecules in an elastically stressed body to readjust themselves in such a way that if the deformation were kept constant, a release of stress would take place. If rupture does not occur, this process of relaxation causes the rate of flow to obtain a final constant value, as shown in the curve (Fig I) obtained by Taylor and Quinney.14 In this state the release of stress by relaxation exactly counterbalances the increase due to the elastic strain on the test pieces.

The liquidus curve of the Mg-Pb system was accurately redetermined. The compound Mg2Pb decomposes peritectically at 538.2° ± 0.3°C to liquid and to a compound p' which melts congruently at 35.0 at. pct Pb and 549.0° ± 0.3°C. The solidus curve of ß' was determined. X-ray diffraction studies indicate that 4' has an orthorhombic structure. Activity values of magnesium calculated from the phase diagram agree with those published in the literature. EXPERIMENTAL thermodynamic properties of binary metallic systems have to be consistent with values calculated from the phase diagram. In systems forming intermetallic compounds the shape of the liquidus curve near a compound is determined by the thermodynamic properties of the coexisting solid and liquid phases. Hauffe and Wagner' neglected the temperature dependence of the chemical potentials and obtained the potential differences of the components of the liquid alloys, relative to stoichiometric liquid. Their calculations were based on the liquidus curve and on the heat of fusion of the compound, and were only valid near the congruent melting point. Steiner, Miller, and Komarek2 developed equations which account for the temperature dependence and obtained the chemical potentials of liquid Mg-Sn alloys over the entire phase diagram from the liquidus and solidus curves and from enthalpy values with the pure components as the standard states. The Mg-Pb phase diagram has been studied by several investigators whose results have been compiled and critically evaluated by Hansen.3 Although the liquidus curve was poorly defined, the general features of the diagram, i.e., one congruent melting compound, Mg2Pb, of essentially stoichiometric composition, two eutectics, and limited terminal solid solubilities, seemed to be suitable for a similar thermodynamic analysis. A careful redeter-mination of the liquidus by thermal analysis revealed, however, the existence of another compound. The liquidus curve between the two eutectics was precisely delineated and the structure and solidus curve of the new compound were investigated. The revised phase diagram was thermodynamic ally analyzed to evaluate the activity of magnesium in the liquid alloys. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The magnesium metal (Dominion Magnesium Ltd., Toronto, Canada) had a purity of 99.99+ pct; lead (American Smelting and Refining Co.) contained 99.999 pct Pb. Most experiments were carried out in graphite crucibles. Several experiments were made in high-purity alumina (Triangle R.R., Mor-ganite, Inc.) and in Armco iron crucibles to test the inertness of the graphite crucibles. Chemical analysis of magnesium and detailed description of the procedure for thermal analysis have been given previously. For the determination of the solidus curve of the compounds, specimens of initial composition Mg2Pb were equilibrated in a closed isothermal system with magnesium vapor. The source of the magnesium vapor was an alloy which had a gross composition lying in the 0' + L field at the temperature of equilibration. As equilibrium was approached, the specimens lost magnesium to the two-phase reservoir thereby lowering the activity of magnesium in the specimens until activity and composition equaled that of the ß'/ß' + L boundary. Crucibles (1.9 cm ID by 2.2 cm OD by 4.1 cm high) and tightly fitting lids were machined from a molybdenum rod; small, shallow trays were fashioned from thin (0.005 in.) molybdenum sheet, and all the molybdenum components were degreased in hot carbon tetrachloride and then dried. The pieces were then degassed in vacuum at 950°C for about 6 hr. The two-phase alloy was placed at the bottom of the crucible and small specimens of the Mg2Pb compound, weighed on an analytical balance, were placed in two molybdenum trays above the two-phase alloy. The crucible was closed by forcing its lid on and then inserted in a titanium crucible. This crucible was evacuated, flushed twice with argon, and welded under argon. The specimens were equilibrated for about 1 week in a resistance furnace regulated by a Celectray controller, and the runs were terminated by water quenching. The specimens were again weighed and the equilibrium compositions were calculated on the basis that the weight losses were solely due to a loss of magnesium to the two-phase alloy. The structure of the B' phase was investigated by the Debye-Scherrer X-ray diffraction technique. Selected ingots from thermal-analysis experiments containing about 35 at. pct Pb were re-melted, slowly cooled, and crushed in an argon-filled glovebox until the entire ingot passed through a 50-mesh sieve. DIRECT subsidies for mine production in this country began as an outgrowth of wartime 'price regulation. The price-fixing authorities realized that the volume of production to be required from domestic copper, lead, and zinc mines would invoke costs of production considerably higher than the established ceiling prices. Accordingly, beginning Feb. 1, 1942 the Premium Price Plan was set up, which undertook to pay premiums to mines for production in excess of quota, of 5¢ per lb of copper and 2Y4¢ per lb of zinc or lead. Quotas, except for small mines, were initially established at the average rate of production in 1941, but were later reduced arbitrarily on an individual basis. Subsequently, additional "B" premiums were set for lead and zinc of 2Y40 per lb and a further "C" zinc premium of 2%¢. Additional copper premiums were negotiated on an individual basis, mainly with small mines. Quotas under each of these successive categories were the production obtained at the next lower premium level. In other words, under ceiling prices of 12¢ for copper, 6,14¢ for lead, and 83¢ for zinc, it was possible for high-cost operations to receive prices plus premiums of 17¢ or more for copper, 12¢ for lead, and 16% 0 for zinc on a portion of their production. On the other hand, some of the larger operators received only slight premiums and in at least one instance none at all. The average price plus premium for copper was 12.25¢ in 1942 and rose to 13.65¢ in 1945. That for lead was 6.99¢ in 1942 and 8.73¢ in 1945, and for zinc it was 9.06¢ in 1942 and 11.200 in 1945.

WHAT does management expect of W and from an engineer? First and foremost, it expects that he should become, and therefore should fit himself in every way to be, a part of management so that he may assume as much and as many of the responsibilities of management as his ability and the opportunities of the job permit. Let me make clear at the start that the profession of pure, technical engineering offers but limited opportunities at the top levels because of the inherent organization of engineering work. The line of succession to top jobs may be likened to a cone with a broad base and an extremely sharp point. Consider any oil company, large or small, or any operating function of that company, and you will find few top engineering jobs in the organization. This is true by the nature of the work handled. There will be a few district engineers depending on the spread of operations, a chief petroleum and production engineer, perhaps a few research engineers, possibly some technical executive assistants, and that is usually all. The road to these jobs is a long one and the competition is tough. The larger the organization the greater the opportunity, but always the ratio of engineers to top engineering jobs is only a small one.

As I drove in from the airport on Sunday somebody said 'On the right you will see Duntroon, which is the military training school of Australia.' So I asked the driver, where did they get that name? 'Oh,' he said, 'from some people who built a house there. That was it's name- Duntroon.' It strikes a note with me because, that's the name of a 12th century castle on the west coast of Scotland where I spend what leisure hours I have and, therefore, it establishes the long connection between Australia and my native land. There is also a story I should tell you about the oil industry and its upsurge in Scotland recently which has resulted in great prosperity. And in Edinburgh, the walls of the banks are bulging-because of the incursion of foreign exchange and other resources. Charlotte Square, as some of you know, is the centre of the Scottish financial world and at one of the corners of Charlotte Square, where ho streets intersect, there are three stores-three emporia on the ground floor. Two of them at opposite corners are banks: The Royal Bank of Scotland, and not to be beaten by that, The Bank of Scotland. But the third building is occupied, or was occupied, by a furniture store over many years-very high-grade, high quality furniture that the elite of the Edinburgh society always supported. And suddenly, the store was cleared out and in came a bunch of carpenters and other people busily engaged in rebuilding the store, and finally the new tenants arrived on the scene.

THE World. Engineering Congress closed as it opened, with a brilliant and dignified ceremony. On Oct. 29, 1929, there were hearty speeches of welcome and of hope for the successful issue of this international gathering; on Nov. 7, the farewells were even more heartfelt expressions, and anticipation gave place to, realization. H. I. H. Prince Yasuhito of Chichibu, who had graciously opened the Congress; was unavoidably absent at the closing ceremony, being on duty with his command at the Army maneuvers, so that the principal speech was made by the President of the Congress, Baron Furuichi. The outstanding statistics of the meetings were: an over-all attendance, delegates and members, of 800 from overseas and 2800 Japanese 83 sectional meetings, all. meetings having practically capacity attendance, this being especially true of Section 11, mining and metal¬lurgy, where standing room only was commonly the rule; and 780 papers were presented, in full or in abstract or by title. H. I. H. Prince Chichibu attended each section on Oct. 31. The large attendance of Japanese students was notable at most sections.
