The shaft-plant here described was put in operation in September, 1895, and the No. 6 slope-motor was started in May, 1896. The plant comprises : One Norwalk three-stage compressor l21/2, 91/2 and 5 in. diameters of air- and 20 in. diameter of steam-cylinder, all 24 in. stroke; capacity at 100 revolutions, 296 cu. ft. of free air per minute, compressed to 600 Ibs. per sq. in. A main pipe, 5 in. diameter, 4380 ft. long, with five charging-stations in No. 6 Shaft, and a branch of 3 in. pipe, 3100 ft. long, with three charging stations, in No. 6 Slope. These pipes on each line charge a Porter compressed-air motor, with 7 by 14 in. cylinders, and four 24 in. drivers, weighing about eight tons, with a tank-capacity of 130 cu. ft. of air at 550 lbs. pressure in the main tank, reduced to 160 lbs. in the 8-in. auxiliary tank of 4.2 cu. ft. capacity, supplying the cylinders. The No. 6 shaft run averages 4000 ft. each way on grades of $ to 23/4 per cent., and averaging close to one per cent. in favor of the loaded cars. The No. 6 slope run averages 2100 ft. with nearly the same grades. The mine-cars weigh 2800 Ibs. empty, and about 9800 lbs. loaded, and are hauled in trips of 12 to 20, averaging about 15 cars. The alloys of gold and iron were investigated in 1907 by Isaac and Tammann,l who determined the thermal diagram for the entire system by thermal analysis and microscopic examination. They also reviewed the previous literature. Since that time the present authors have been able to find only two additional references. Guertler and Schulze2 examined the electrical resistance of iron alloys containing up to 40 per cent by weight of gold between 0" and 200" C.; the alloys were in the form of wires. The main result of this work was to confirm the solid solubility limit found by Isaac and Tammann; namely, about 20 per cent Au. More recently, Shih3 has examined the magnetic properties of gold alloys containing up to 10 weight per cent iron and particularly the range below 5 per cent. The alloys in the lower range were found to be paramagnetic; the 10 per cent alloy was ferromagnetic. The present investigation was undertaken to determine the solid solubility limits at various temperatures, particularly below the a-y transformation point of iron, since these solubilities are of some importance in connection with the working of the alloys in the manufacture of certain "grey" and "blue" golds. Materials and Methods The gold was obtained from the U. S. Metals Refining Co. and contained 99.99+ per cent Au. The electrolytic iron had been annealed in hydrogen and contained impurities as follows: P, 0.035; Si, 0.001; S, C, Mn, Cu, each 0.01 per cent. IN the course of the experimental and development work of Henry L. Doherty in an endeavor to obtain an increased yield of oil from oil-bearing sands, it was Mr. Doherty's claim and contention that oil in an undisturbed pool was different in character and behavior than, the same oil when raised to the surface of the earth, and that the gas dissolved in the oil caused a marked reduction in its viscosity and surface tension. Prior to 1924 no information to support this contention could be found in the literature or by a discussion of the subject with technical men in Government and private laboratories. So far as could be ascertained no experimental work had been carried on to indicate that Mr. Doherty's claim was either right or wrong. All parties consulted agreed that the viscosity of the oil would be affected by gas dissolved therein to the extent that natural gasoline was present in the gas, but so far as could be determined any additional effect of the natural gas was unknown. Accordingly, it was necessary to devise equipment and carry on experiments which would either prove or disprove Mr. Doherty's contention or claim. Such apparatus was built under Mr. Doherty's direction and experiments were carried on to determine definitely the viscosity and the surface tension of the crude oils which contain dissolved gases under different pressures. The results of the experimental work carried on have proved that the claim and contention of Mr. Doherty were correct in every particular, as will be seen from the discussion of the subject and the data contained in this paper.

The world's largest steam-driven mine hoist, built by Nordberg Manufacturing Co. a half century ago, has become a major tourist attraction in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The hoist, designed by company founder Bruno V. Nordberg, is located in the Quincy Mine Number Two, just north of Hancock. Nordberg began construction of the mammoth machine before World War I, but delayed completion until after the war. The hoist became operational in 1920 and continued running until the mine was shut down in 1931.

The International Law of the Continental Shelf, so far ratified by 35 nations, extends the national boundary of any coastal nation to the edge of the continental shelf, this normally being at a continuous water depth of 200 m. The Law further extends this boundary to include the floor of the deep ocean to any depth that can be mined by advanced mining technology. In effect, proof of mining can constitute proof of ownership of the subaqueous land and the minerals on or below the sea floor. Irrespective of the fact that present technology is too limited to permit mineral exploitation in the high seas-and the law regarding the right to mine appears hazy-the U. S. Treasury Department's Bureau of Customs, has a ruling that would further deter mining operations on the high seas. This law contends that minerals mined on the continental shelf of the United States are actually mined within the continental United States and are free of tariff, but mined products or other articles obtained from the ocean or the sea floor beyond the continental shelf, if brought into this nation, must be considered as imported and are subject to such customs duties as are applicable under the tariff schedules of the United States.

BEFORE the war we often heard the term "Big Business." And there were complaints of the ills and abuses attributed to bigness in business. Although there were examples where the small businessmen spoke for their rights and sought protection from the bigger ones, it has only been in recent war years that a tendency has developed definitely to divide the business of our nation into the big and the small. In some cases, those with an eye to the political value of the vastly greater number of small businessmen of the country have fomented this division by hurrying to the protection of these more numerous voters, and intentionally or not have emphasized in their writings and verbal attacks any and all differences of these interests that could either be found or fabricated to, suit the occasion. It has become another example of breaking the people into classes and thus setting up the basis for the claims of one class against another, and the subsequent demand for legislation and Governmental aid. The terms "big" and "small" are purely relative. One businessman, employing a hundred men, told me recently he did not know which adjective would be more appropriately applied to his operation. He did not know whether he should join the small operators' group that had been organized, or should consider himself big. He said that his present plant seemed big to him when he looked back to its humble beginning many years ago with a couple of men in two rooms. Yet, when compared with many of his competitors who employ thousands, his was small. He did add, however, that he probably became big one day a few years ago when the union moved in and organized his employees.

It has been known for many years that the magnetic properties of a ferromagnetic material are very sensitive to internal strain. Any structure-sensitive property such as ferromagnetism, which is a function of the regularity of the atomic arrangement, and discontinuities such as grain boundaries must show deviations from an equilibrium state when the regularity of the lattice is disturbed. Experience has shown that such distortions have a marked effect on the magnetic properties of a ferromagnetic material. The purpose of this paper is to show the feasibility of using magnetic methods in detecting internal strains. More specifically, it will be shown how such properties as permeability, rema-nence, and coercive force change on cold-working of aluminum iron and how these magnetic properties change during the annealing below the recrystallization temperatures. This work was conducted for two reasons. One was the desire to see in what manner strains are relieved in aluminum iron at low temperatures—a subject of practical importance in soft magnetic materials—and the other was the feeling that a study of cold-working and strain relief might shed some light onour understandingof what takes place in the deformation of metals. Definition of Terms It is necessary to define the terminology used in this Paper because magnetic nomenclature is usually unfamiliar to the metallurgist, and certain other terms, such as recovery, have been used ambiguously by metallurgists and others. Magnetic terms are best explained by reference to the common hysteresis loop of ferromagnetic materials (Fig. I). In Fig. 1 the coordinates are magnetic induction, B, (ordinate) and magnetizing force, H. (abscissa). The c.g.s. unit for the magnetic induction is the gauss, the number of flux lines per square centimeter, and the unit for the magnetizing force is the oersted, the number of lines of force per centimeter in air or vacuum. If one starts with a completely demagnetized specimen and magnetizes it, a typical virgin magnetization curve beginning at the origin is obtained. This curve is also the locus of tips of a family of smaller hysteresis loops. From this curve it is to be noted that the induction is not proportional to the magnetizing force, and that it appears to approach a limiting induction called the saturation value, and does so for values of H of 1000 oersteds. The ratio of the magnetic induction (gauss) to the magnetizing force (oersteds) is called permeability, . Thus u= B/H and if the magnetizing force H (oersteds) is specified as ro or 100 oersteds, the permeability is written as or l00 This is the accepted notation, and will be used in this paper. ENGINEERS are the key men in our war program today. Upon the technical knowledge and skill of the engineer and upon his administrative and executive abilities rests the entire success for the production of vital materials of the war. Naturally the work load of the engineering examining unit of the U. S. Civil Service Commission has increased greatly since our active participation in the war. At present, over 550 separate requests for certification of eligibles are received by the engineering unit per week. These represent more than a fourth of the total requests received for personnel by the Commission's central office at Washington and represent a recruitment work load of three to four times that carried by the whole Commission previous to January 1940. These requests represent a minimum of a thousand vacancies to be filled each week, while an average week will produce, at present, approximately 1400 vacancies and a weekly maximum may approach well over 2000 vacancies.

The application of Muskat's differential equations for predicting the performance of a solution gas-drive reservoir to the Fullerton field indicates that a recovery may be expected of 14,030 bbl per acre under primary depletion, and 15,910 and I7,190 bbl per acre, respectively, under the two pressure-maintenance programs analyzed. In this analysis it is assumed that fluid properties are the same throughout the reservoir, that the core data used are typical of the Clear Fork limestone in the locality, and that injected gas is completely diffused through the pay zones. The economic study of the three recovery programs considered indicates that the one in which 60 pct of the produced gas is returned to the formation is the most profitable. Introduction The purpose of this paper is to consider the effect of pressure maintenance by gas injection on the ultimate recovery of oil from a solution gas-drive reservoir. This prediction of reservoir behavior is the result of calculations based on the equations presented by M. Muskat in the Journal of Applied Physics, March 1945. Reservoir The reservoir analyzed is the Fullerton field in Andrews County, West Texas. It is situated on a broad anticlinal structure with approximately 330 ft of closure, and extends approximately eight miles north and south and five miles east and west. The areal extent is taken as 16,642 acres. The producing horizon is the Lower Clear Fork limestone of Permian age, occurring at depths from 6650 to 7350 ft. It is divided into four zones. For the purposes of this study, the fluid characteristics in all zones are assumed to be the same. Therefore an equivalent zone is assumed of thickness equal to the sum of the thicknesses of the four zones, or an average of 216 ft. The reservoir contains 3,586,991 acre feet of producing limestone, with an initial volume of stock tank oil in place of 918,-403,100 bbl. The average connate water saturation is 24.0 pct. The permeability ranges from 6.7 md. to 12.6 md., and the porosity ranges from 7.7 pct to 11.4 pct, except for occasional cavernous streaks. Based on these values, the limestone may be considered intergranu1ar.l Production histories and material-balance studies have indicated that the driving mechanism is solution gas. Water levels have been established. Theory It is possible to express mathematically the change in residual oil saturation with pressure decline in a solution gas-drive reservoir as being equal to the change in the physical properties of the fluids present in the reservoir as this pressure decline occurs. The art of manufacturing metal for practical uses is very old and has undergone very great development. The science of metals has- also developed very rapidly recently and the various processes to which metals are submitted are much better understood now than they were even a short time ago. All the knowledge that can be obtained on this subject is useful because it promotes efficiency in converting metal into finished articles.

ALMADEN is Arabic for "the mine." The definite article is properly used, for no mercury mine in the world compares with it for richness and volume of ore, produced and potential. After more than twenty centuries of exploitation, intensive throughout the last lour, ore from Almaden is about five times as rich as that of its closest competitor. We drove to the mine one April afternoon, across Don Quixote's plains of the Mancha, up the bleak, arid valley of the Rio Valdeazogue where we passed tenth century Moorish workings and their ruined castles. At dusk, we came to the Hacienda de Castilseras, a large farm where Almaden miners work their land on off days. Then we drove through the whitewashed, well-ordered town to the Castillo de la Direccion where we were challenged at the iron gate by two picturesquely costumed Guardias Jurados.

The reverse transformation of bcc martensite to the fcc phase was studied in an Fe-33.95 wl pct Ni alloy by nzeans oj dilatometry, melallography, and electron microscopy. Upon "slozc" heating (-1°C per min) length cJmnge us temperature plots showed u gradual contracLion over the temperature range 200" to 280"C ,followed by a more abrupt contraction beginning a1 -280°C. Howet,ev, zchen the heating rate was increased -4°C per tnin, no gradual contraction was observed and only the abrupt contraction starting at -2BO"C was found. Thus on slower heating- the AS "temperature" for the subject alloy, unlike the MS temperature, is better defined as a range of temperatures. Both optical and transmissiorl electron microscope observations showed that some of the martensite plates exizibited a partial loss of transformation twins during reversal. The midvib region of the martensite plates disappeaved relatively early duirng the reversal. Metallographic observations slowed that the earliest detectable stage of the rezlerse tvansforrvration begins (axd Moues inulardly) at The Martensens i te - parent interface. At higher temperatirres, the. formation of martensitically reversed jcc plates within the bcc martensite plales was observed. It is concluded that the reverse transformation consists of a diffusion less process (martensitic); but this is ps-obably aided by a prior or simultaneous dijjusiorz-comltvolled process, at leasl in the case of slower heat-ing' experiments. ALTHOUGH numerous investigations have dealt with the parent-to-martensite ("forward") transformation (fcc — bcc) in Fe-Ni alloys, comparatively little is reported on the ("reverse7') martensite-to-parent transformation.'-4 Even though such reverse transformations have been studied in detail in some nonferrous systems, one of the difficulties of studying the reverse transformation in most ferrous mar-tensites is that the martensite decomposes by tempering during heating. However, carbonless Fe-Ni alloys do not exhibit this difficulty since the transformation in these alloys is completely reversible. The present investigation represents an attempt to shed more light on the nature and mechanism of the martensite-to-parent transformation. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE 1.1) Alloy Prepatation. Fe-Ni alloys of compositions near 34 wt pct Ni were prepared from zone-refined iron (99.994 wt pct Fe) and high-purity nickel (99.999 wt pct Ni) by induction melting in recrystallized alumina crucibles in an argon atmosphere, with prior vacuum evacuation to 10"3 mm Hg. The alloys were homogenized by induction stirring in the molten state for 5 min. After solidification, the alloys were further homogenized in evacuated quartz capsules for 96 hr at 1230°C. 1.2) Dilatometry. Slices of the ingot were hot-forged (750°C in air) into approximate rod form and these specimens were then hot-swaged (750°C in air) into long cylindrical rods 0.55 mm diam. From the rods, specimens about 1 in. long were cut. These were then vacuum-annealed for 24 hr at 1200°C, cooled to room temperature, and subsequently transformed to martensite in liquid nitrogen (whereby about 40 pct transformation was obtained). Dilatation measurements were made by observing length changes in a vacuum dilatometer with an externally mounted LVDT sensing element. 1. 3) Preparation of Electron Microscope Specimens. Slices of the ingots were cold-rolled (with intermediate vacuum anneals) to -0.020 in. Out of these rolled sheets, specimens (about 1 by 1 in.) were cut. These were then vacuum-annealed, transformed to martensite by cooling in liquid nitrogen, and subsequently heated from room temperature to various temperatures to effect either partial or complete reverse transformation. These specimens were then chemically polished to 0.002 in. in l:l HsOz (30 pct) and &PO4 (85 pct) solution, and thinned to electron transparency in an electrolyte consisting of 150 g CraOs, 750 ml glacial acetic acid, and 30 ml ~~0.~ Observations were made with a 100-kv Hitachi HU-11 electron microscope equipped with an HK-2A tilting device. 1.4) Optical Microscopy. Metallographic observations were made with a Leitz MM5 metallograph on the same 0.020-in. sheet specimens as were used for electron microscopy and on bulk specimens which were 0.2 in. or more on a side. The chemical thinning solution when cooled below 20°C also served as an etchant for this alloy. Observations of surface relief were made with a Zeiss interference microscope employing a Thallium light source of wavelength 0.54 p. Specimens for interference studies were prepared by two-stage polishing on Buehler vibromet polishers using 0.3 and 0.05 p alumina abrasives. 2) EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS 2.1) Comparison of the MS,AS, and Af Tempera-tures wTth Previous Re sults. The AS aLd Af tempera -tures of several Fe-Ni alloys were determined dila-tometrically. The MS temperatures of the same alloys were determined by continuously lowering the temperature using a mixture of isopentane and liquid nitrogen and observing the highest temperature at which a prepolished specimen showed surface upheavals. For the present the As temperature is defined as the temperature at which an abrupt decrease in length occurs in the dilatation plot. WILLIAM WALLACE MEIN, known to his intimates as "Will" or "Billy", is a mining engineer who has taken the fundamentals of successful mining--operating, engineering, and financial-and applied them to the founding of new industries. Born in Nevada City, Calif., in 1873, Will Mein grew up in an atmosphere of mining, and began to develop his sound judgment in a practical way before starting his formal technical education. As a young man he supplemented his early observations by helping his father, Captain "Tom" Mein, on mining work in California and Alaska. He then went with his father to the Rand, and after a period of milling experience as operator and shift boss he became, in 1894, manager of the chlorination of gold ores at the Robinson mine.

Prior to the meeting there was an informal dinner attended by 50 men. Then followed an address, "The Principles of Corrosion Protection," by Ulick R. Evans, the well-known British specialist in this problem. There were 266 present, presided over by Zay Jeffries, president of the American Society for Steel Treating and a member of the Cleveland Engineering Society. The address was well received and some discussion followed

A GEOLOGIST --one versed in geology, the science which treats of the history of the earth and its life, especially as recorded in the rocks; that is Webster's definition. William Embry Wrather-one of the country's foremost geologists who heads the U. S. Geological Survey; this is the 1948 President of the Institute. He has studied the geology of areas on the face of the earth as far-flung as Texas and the Balkans, and now heads the world's largest staff of geologists. Vital statistics on Dr. Wrather would show his place of birth as Brandenburg, Ky., the year 1883. He will celebrate his threescore and five years of full living the twentieth of this month. As is usual in biographical sketches of this nature, the formative years of youth, and in many ways the most important years of one's life (since professional tendencies as well as many important personal decisions are evidenced before the teens are left behind) are passed over with the mere fact noted that a degree was earned at such and such educational institution. And so we note that Dr. Wrather received his Ph.B. degree at the University of Chicago in 1907, and followed up that degree with two years of graduate study.

THE Committee on Elimination of Waste in industry came into existence from a speech in Washington by Mr. ,Hoover, in November, in which, he said: It is primary to mention the three-phase waste in production: first, from intermittent employment; second, from unemployment that arises in shifting of industrial currents; and third; from strikes and lockouts. Beyond this elimination of waste there is another field of progress in the adoption of measures for positive improvement in production.
