The partial molar heats of solution in liquid tin of cadmium, silver, tellurium, and zinc have been measured at 655°. 700°, and 750°K by liquid-metal solution calorimetry. Silver, cadmium, and zinc are endothermic at these temperatures while tellurium is exothermic. Only the heat of solution of silver depends on composition while all four elements show a temperature-de pendent heat of solution. The heat of solution of tellurium is constant up to 0.6 g-at. pct, becomes increasingly more exothermic, and reaches a limiting value at 1 g-at. pct Te. The limiting value has been used to calculate the heat of formation of SnTe at 750°K. The heat effects associated with the dissolution of the compounds Ag2 Te, CdTe, and ZnTe in liquid tin were measured at 750°K. These values are cotnOined with the measured hat effects at 750°Kfor silver, cadmium, tellurium, and zinc to detertrline the heats of formation of the telluride compounds. Cadmium lelluride exhibits a heat of dissolution which has a compositional dependence. THERE is a considerable amount of interest in the compounds of tellurium because of their electronic properties. Both cadmium and zinc tellurides are thermoelectric materials and considerable work has been done on their electronic properties but a limited amount of data is available on their ther-modynamic properties. This work was undertaken to elucidate the heat of formation data on cadmium and zinc telluride. Since both cadmium and zinc are in Group II it seemed to be of interest to compare the values obtained for them with the heat of formation of a Group I telluride. Silver telluride was selected for this comparison. In the course of the work it was also possible to determine the heat of formation of tin telluride and therefore to make a comparison of some of the Group I, 11, and lV tellurides with the metallic elements silver, cadmium, and tin being in the same period. There is also a great deal of interest in the energetic changes which occur upon addition of solute elements to a common solvent. This investigation provided an opportunity to study the partial molar heats of solution of silver, cadmium, tellurium, and zinc in liquid tin. The partial molar heats of solution are of theoretical interest because solute-solute interactions are a minimum in dilute solutions and application of solution models is simpli- fied. In order to complete the analysis of solute-solute and solute-solvent interactions the temperature dependence of the partial molar heats of solution was also measured. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE All materials were of the highest purity available. The silver, zinc, cadmium, and tellurium were obtained from American Smelting and Refining Co. and were reported to be 99.999 pct pure. The silver telluride, zinc telluride, and cadmium telluride were obtained from Atomergic Chemetals Co., a division of Gallard-Schlesinger Chemical Manufacturing Corp., and were electronic-grade material of 99.999 pct purity. Tin used for the solvent bath and for calibration was obtained from the Vulcan Manufacturing Co. and was reported as being 99.99 pct pure. The liquid-tin solution calorimeter used in this work is similar in principle to the differential twin-type calorimeter described by K1eppa.l Two of three identical calorimeter wells are used together during any set of experiments, one well being active and the other being passive. The wells are positioned 120 deg apart in an aluminum calorimeter block. Each well contains a multijunction thermopile and a Pyrex test tube to hold the liquid metal bath. Forty-eight of the thermopile junctions are distributed over the surface of each calorimeter well adjacent to the test tube and serve to integrate the heat effects occurring. The other forty-eight are next to the aluminum calorimeter block. The thermopiles for the three wells are connected differentially so that any change in temperature at the outer junctions (which will be the same for both wells because of the high conductivity of the aluminum block) will oppose for the two wells and result in no shift of the zero. The electrical output represents the true temperature difference between the two reaction vessels. A reaction occurring in the active well gives a comparison with another body of very similar thermal properties. In this way, any spurious heat effects due to slight temperature drifts within the entire calorimeter block are eliminated. The output of the differential thermopile goes to a dc amplifier with multiple ranges of from * 10 pv to 1 30 mv. The output of the amplifier is then fed into a Leeds and Northrup strip-chart recorder. The adiabatic temperature change is then calculated using the technique of Howlett, Leach, Ticknor, and ever.' The paper presents the results of experiments on the anelastic. behavior of gold, as manifested by grain boundary relaxation. Two grain boundary internal friction peaks are found for 99.9998 pct Au. It is found that the peaks are associated with primary and secondary recrystallization. However, the existence of two discrete peaks cannot be explained on the basis of grain size and shape alone. It is suggested that grain boundary stability, as determined by orientation, plays a role in the observed effects. EVIDENCE for the viscous behavior of grain boundaries in metals has been presented in recent years by several investigators, based upon studies of various anelastic effects, especially internal friction. KG1 has contributed greatly to this field, having put forward a coherent body of evidence for stress relaxation by the viscous intercrystalline flow mechanism. In this connection, he has made extensive use of pure aluminum (99.991 pct) as the test material, although he has also studied other metals and alloys, including pure iron (Puron).² Rotherham, Smith, and Greenough³ have studied the internal friction of pure tin, interpreting their results in a manner similar to that of KG. In view of the importance of such studies in shedding light upon the fundamental structure and behavior of the grain boundaries in pure metals, it appears that the use of a very pure test material which is inert to its environment should provide useful information on anelastic properties and the source of such behavior in pure metals. The present work was carried out on spectrograph-ically pure, 99.9998 pct Au, free of all impurities except for a trace of silver, estimated to be present to the extent of about 0.0002 pct. The term "pure gold" will hereafter refer to this very pure material. Gold of commercial purity, 99.98 pct, was also studied to observe the effects of small amounts of impurities. A pure gold "single crystal" specimen was also tested for comparison. The variation of the internal friction and rigidity modulus as a function of temperature was determined by means of a torsion pendulum apparatus employing extremely low stress amplitudes and a frequency of vibration of the order of 1 cycle per sec. A 12 in. length of 0.031 in. (20 gage) gold wire formed the suspension element. The apparatus was similar to that described by Ke.l The test procedure and the basic requirements to be met for obtaining useful experimental data by this method have been given elsewhere.1,2 It should be made clear that in all of the experiments to be described, the internal friction and rigidity were independent of the amplitude of torsional vibration. The semilog plot of amplitude of vibration vs ordinal number of vibration was a straight line. This was carefully verified for each internal friction measurement. The linear variation shows that the internal friction was independent of stress; i.e., that the specimens were not being cold-worked during testing. The reproducibility of the internal friction curves, which were obtained by cyclic heating and cooling, indicates that the gold was unaffected by its environment during the tests. The measure of internal friction adopted in the present study is the conventional "logarithmic decrement," defined as follows: log. dec. = l/n In A0/An [I] where n is the number of cycles or vibrations; A,, the initial amplitude of vibration; and An, the amplitude after the nth cycle. When the logarithmic decrement is small, the shear modulus, G, of the wire is proportional to the square of the frequency of vibration provided the length and radius of the wire are kept constant. A plot of frequency squared vs temperature gives the following ratio:' This expresses the fraction of the stress which has not been relaxed at a given temperature. Gr and Gv are the relaxed and unrelaxed moduli, respectively. The frequency of vibration in the polycrys-talline specimen is fp, and the frequency of vibration of a single crystal is f8. This latter quantity is obtained simply by extrapolating the linear, low temperature portion of the curve of frequency squared vs temperature for the polycrystalline specimens. The theory of viscous grain boundary stress relaxation as demonstrated by the anelastic behavior of metals has been discussed in detail by Zener4 and need not be reproduced here. Experimental Results Initial measurements of the internal friction of pure gold were carried out on specimens which had been drawn with no intermediate annealing, resulting in a material which had undergone approximately 99 pct reduction of area in final processing. Annealing was then carried out at successively higher temperatures starting at 400°F for 1 hr and proceeding in this manner to as high as 1600°F in 100°F intervals. After each annealing treatment an internal friction and rigidity vs temperature curve was obtained over the range from room temperature to the particular annealing temperature. It has been shown that hydrogen may be made to serve as a rapid and eflicient reducing agent for Cu, Ni, Co, and Fe sulfides if a scavenging agent for hydrogen sulfide is intimately mixed with the sulfide particles being reduced. Accelerated reduction kinetics are demonstrated for nickel sulfide. Copper, nickel, and cobalt sulfides, when treated at certain temperatures in a combined reducing agent-scavenging agent system, are converted to voluminous masses of fibrous metal product. Studies have been carried out to determine the conditions which lead, on the one hand, to irregular poly crystalline fibers and, on the other, to long single crystal filaments a few microns in diameter. A mechanism is proposed to account for the formation of single crystal filuments. The sulfide minerals of Cu, Ni, Co, and Fe are an important source of these metals yet there has been comparatively little scientific effort devoted towards understanding reduction mechanisms of these minerals. This may be, in part, due to the fact that the most convenient reducing agents for carrying out such studies, viz., hydrogen and carbon, do not react appreciably with sulfides. We have found that the reaction of hydrogen with metal sulfides can be markedly accelerated by placing a scavenging agent for hydrogen sulfide in close proximity to the metal sulfide. A brief series of experiments demonstrating relative reduction rates is reported in this paper to illustrate the effect. With the reduction process thus accelerated we have observed an unusual type of reduction behavior on some of the sulfides investigated. Under certain conditions the metallic product of the reduction reaction takes the form of filaments growing outward from the sulfide particles. The present paper deals largely with efforts to classify the various types of growth forms observed. This study has shown that filamentary growths from sulfides take a much greater variety of forms than has heretofore been reported by Ercker,1 Hardy,2 and Nabarro and Jackson3 in their reviews of metallic growths from copper and silver sulfides. THERMODYNAMIC CONSIDERATIONS The thermodynamics for hydrogen reduction of metal sulfides is quite unfavorable. For the sulfides considered here equilibrium constants typically range from 10-3 to 10-5. These low equilibrium constants impose severe kinetic limitations on reduction since hydrogen sulfide must be transported out of the system at concentrations of only a few hundred ppm. Unless extremely high gas flow rates are employed the atmosphere surrounding any sulfide particle will always be essentially in equilibrium with the sulfide. If, however, one places an efficient scavenging agent for hydrogen sulfide in close proximity to the metal sulfide particles the concentration of H2S near the metal sulfide will be held to a very low value. This would permit the reduction reaction to proceed with little or no inhibition from a buildup of reaction product gas. It is well known that calcium oxide is capable of removing hydrogen sulfide from a hydrogen gas stream of low dew point.4 If a sufficient quantity of calcium oxide is mixed with the metal sulfide particles the reaction: CaO+H2S=CaS+ H2O [l] will substitute moisture in place of hydrogen sulfide in the gas stream and this will not affect, in a direct manner, the reaction: MeS +H2=Me + H2S [2] A convenient method of considering the thermodynamics of the combined reducing agent-scavenging agent system is to consider the atmosphere when the partial pressure of hydrogen sulfide is the same over both the metal sulfide and the scavenging agent, i.e., pH2S (1) =pH2S (2). As a consequence: pH2O (1) pH2(2) =K1K2 The chemical driving force for reduction will depend inversely upon the moisture content of the gas and will be 0 when, in the system, pH2O = pH2.K1K2. Table I lists values of the equilibrium constants for reduction and H2S scavenging reactions for a number of sulfides at several temperatures. Data are taken from Rosenqvist4,5 and Kelly.6 The equilibrium constant products calculated from this data show that the limiting level of gaseous reaction product has been increased by a factor of 10' to l04 as a result of substituting a reducing agent-scavenging agent system for a simple reducing agent system. One possible side effect which must be considered is the possibility that the moisture evolved in the scavenging reaction might cause the atmosphere in the system to be sufficiently oxidizing to favor the formation of oxide rather than metal. This possibility was examined by comparing the equilibrium constant products listed in Table I with equilibrium constants for hydrogen reduction of the respective metal oxides. Analyses that include diffusion of solute in the solid phase are formulated to describe solute redistribution in dendritic solidification of metallic alloys. The analyses are based on conditions that include negligible undercooling before nucleation of solid phases, negligible increase of solute in advance of the tips of growing dendrites, complete diffusion within the liquid over distances the order of dendrite spacings, and a plate-like dendrite morphology. The classical nonequilibrium freezing equation, Cs = kCo(I - fS)k-l accurately describes solute redistribution between dendrite arms for the solidification processes considered, provided diffusion in the solid is negligible. To account for the effect of diffusion in the solid, an analytic expression is given which is similar inform to the classical expression. 172 addition, a numerical-analysis procedure is etnployed to examine in more detail the effect of diffusion both during and after solidification. The analyses are intended for application to solidification of castings and ingots to describe a) final solute distribution after solidification and cooling to room temperature (microsegregation) and b) local fraction solid as a function of ternperatcre within the solidifying casting or ingol. SOLUTE redistribution in cellular and dendritic solidification has been discussed quantitatively in recent papers'-3 and in a series of earlier work.4-6 However, none of the analyses developed have permitted close correlation of theory with final solute distribution (microsegregation) observed in castings and ingots. In this paper, discussion is given of approximations which may reasonably be made in mathematical treatment of microsegregation, and analyses are presented based on these approximations. Numerical results are given for Al-Cu alloys. In a second paper the analyses will be compared with exeriment.7 CLASSICAL ANALYSIS The classical quantitative treatment of solute redistribution within a closed "volume element" has been derived repeatedly, for example by Gulliver,4 Scheil,' and Pfann.' This "classical nonequilibrium solidification equation" is written for constant partition ratio: where Cs = interface composition of the solid when the weight-fraction solid within the "volume element" is fs (weight fraction, wt pct); k = equilibrium partition ratio; Co = initial alloy composition within the volume element (weight fraction, wt pct). Assumptions of Eq. [11 are: 1) There is negligible undercooling before nuclea-tion, or from curvature or kinetic effects. 2) There is no mass flow in or out of the volume

The writing of this paper was prompted by the discussion by H. M. Chance of the paper written by Thomas M. Chance,l and by the remarks of the editor in which he stated that while the matter contained in discussion did not refer to the original paper it " was presented as of interest to the operators of cyanide and other lixiviation processes dealing with fluid mixtures of varying specific gravity." For some years past the principle enunciated in the discussion referred to has been known to the writer and demonstrated by him to be an efficient and economical way of separating water or solution from solids in the cyanidation, lixiviation or acid leaching of ore pulps. In utilizing this principle in commercial practice he has invented a method whereby not only the separation of solution from solids may be effected in any given tank, but also the counter migration of the solids and solution may be effected continuously through a series of tanks in which the hydro-metallurgical treatment of ore pulps is being carried on. In effect this method is analogous to the counter-current system, but is different physically in that it is carried on throughout a series of tanks on practically the same level, continuously and automatically, by hydrostatic pressure and gravity-flow, without the aid of intervening pumps or elevators, at the same time that agitation is being carried on in the same tanks. In the Parral system, agitation is effected in tanks by a number of air lifts of comparatively small diameter through which the pulp is continuously transferred from the bottom of the tank and spouted horizontally on top of the charge. The spouting force of the several streams thus discharged maintains a rotary flow in the pulp charge which extends from top to bottom of the tank. This continuous transfer of pulp and the spiral flow from top to bottom of the tank maintains the pulp constituents in uniform proportions and meets the requirements of efficient treatment in a most economical manner. The quantity of compressed air required is very small, as the pulp is not lifted but simply transferred from the bottom to the top of the tank charge under hydrostatic balance. MEIERAN and Richman' have proposed a method for the determination of electron-diffraction patterns from twinned bcc crystals. It is the purpose of this note to present a general method capable of predicting the positions of all reflections from both matrix and twin regions for all possible orientations of cubic crystals. The method has been verified for twinning in explosively deformed copper, and is found to be a very useful tool when used in conjunction with stereographic projection, and dark-field electron microscopy. Let an isometric crystal be twinned in any (hkl) plane. The twinning can be considered either as a reflection in the twin plane or as a 180-deg rotation about the twin axis. In reciprocal space, the 180-deg rotation about the twin axis would place a given point p, q, Y to a new position P, Q,R, such that both will be equally inclined to the twin axis. This is represented in Fig. 1. If the coordinates of three such pairs of points are determined, the matrix of the transformation can be obtained.' It is also seen that such pairs would satisfy another condition, i.e., the vector [p,q,r] plus the vector [P,Q,R] will yield a multiple of hkl, i.e., the indices of the twin plane, because in isometric systems the axis [hkl] is perpendicular to the plane (hkl). This can be simplified by taking the points along the three axes. If a point h2 + k2 + 12, 0, 0 is taken along the x axis, it is seen that its new indices should be so as to yield a sum 2h2, 2hk, 2hl,i.e., 2h(h,k,1). (Also the points h2 - k2 - 12, 2hk, 2h1, and h2 + k2 + 12, 0, 0 are equidistant from the origin and both points make equal angles with the twin axis, i.e., cos-' h/dh2 + k2 + l2.) Similar operations for the points yield respectively, after the 180-deg rotation about the twin axis. Following the method due to Buerger,' the matrix of the transformation is obtained as follows: Using this matrix the indices of any other point in reciprocal space can be determined. From that time they decline in production, the rapidity of decline depending on the output of the wells and on other factork governing their productivity. A STUDY of the precipitation-hardening of copper steels1 led the authors to investigate malleable iron containing copper, for the low-carbon ferritic matrix in malleable iron should lend itself admirably to precipitation-hardening. It was soon found that in addition to rendering malleable iron susceptible to improvement by precipitation-hardening treatments, copper has another potentially useful effect as an accelerator of graphitization. Brief mention of these effects was given in a general paper by Lorig and one of the present authors2; the present paper gives further details on the graphitization and precipitation-hardening effects only. After the completion of this work a paper by L. Lykkin3 appeared, confirming the authors' conclusions regarding graphitization. MATERIAL USED After some preliminary heats had been made in the laboratory to determine the effect of copper, several castings from commercial air-furnace heats were obtained, and data from these alone are given here. Part of the metal was poured directly and part was treated in the ladle with the desired amount of copper before pouring. Green-sand molds were used, each holding two tensile test pieces of the form adopted by the Malleable Iron Research Institute, or two bars for graphitization studies, 5/8 in. in diameter and 9 in. long, fed through two enlarged sections equidistant from the middle and ends of the bars. THE State Department can be of assistance to Americans in the petroleum business directly and indirectly. During the past few months, at the Arms Conference, it had a large hand in dealing with affairs indirectly affecting the oil problem. The conference has somewhat relieved the emphasis on naval strategy in relation to oil supply by limiting the number of naval vessels or the fleets of the Great Powers and in maintaining the "open door" in the Far East in respect of the development of the natural resources of that region by defining that policy in a nine-power treaty. The largest competitors of the. United States in the petroleum field are parties to that treaty. The Department of State also has stood steadfastly for the principle of equal opportunity in the Dutch East Indies, Mesopotamia, and Persia. The Department of State has been of indirect assistance in connection with oil problems by insisting on the recognition of treaty rights and other guar-antees, such as most-favored-nation clauses, and mandate provisions. I am not speaking as a representative of the Depart-ment of State, as L now have no connection with that institution, but my experience of several years as a member of the department and my practice since my resignation have given me opportunity to see the department from both the inside and the outside, and to measure its limitations as well as its resources.

The Institute assembled in the room of the Board of Trade, Mercantile Library Building, on Tuesday evening, May 20th, at 8 o'clock P.M, Hon. W. D. Kelley made an address of welcome to the Institute, which was responded to by President Raymond. The Council reported, through the President, that the Institute had during' the past year, held three meetings, in New York, Pittsburgh, and Boston. Thirty-nine papers of great professional value had been read, and sixty-nine members and twenty-four associates added to the Institute. The finances of the Institute were in good condition, the report of the Treasurer, Mr. T. D. Rand, showing a balance on hand of $1569.74. The report was accepted. Prof. L. Gruner, of Paris, France, and Prof. Peter von Tunner, of Leoben, Austria, having been proposed by ten members of the Institute, and approved by the Council, were unanimously elected honorary members. The finances of the Institute were in good condition, the report of the Treasurer, Mr. T. D. Rand, showing a balance on hand of $1569.74. The report was accepted. Prof. L. The One Hundred Eighteenth Meeting of the. Institute was held at the Milwaukee Auditorium, on Tuesday,. Oct. 8, to Thursday, Oct. 10, inclusive, 1918, under the joint auspices of the Committee on Iron and Steel (Chairman, Prof. J. W. Richards), and the Institute of Metals Division (Chairman, William M. Corse), and simultaneously with sessions of the American Foundrymen's Association and of the. American Malleable Castings Association. It was preeminently a war meeting. It was attended by 104 members of the Institute. The social features, so far as the members of this Institute were concerned, were slight, but generous and appropriate entertainment was offered to the ladies, consisting of automobile sight-seeing trips, reception, concert and dance on Tuesday evening, a theatre party Wednesday evening, and -a banquet in-the Auditorium Thursday evening, at which the speakers were Charles M. Schwab, Director General of the United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation, Major A. Radclyffe Dugmore, and W. H. Blood, Jr., Assistant to the President of the American International Shipbuilding Corporation. A joint session was held on Tuesday morning, at which an address of welcome was delivered by Hon. Emanuel L. Phillipp, Governor of Wisconsin, with a response by Benjamin D. The President was authorized to appoint. a liaison committee to cooperate with the American Mining Congress in respect to the establishment of a Secretary of Mines and Mining in the President's Cabinet. He appointed Edwin Ludlow, Chairman; Mark L. Requa, and J. E. Johnson, Jr. It was resolved to accept the invitation from the Chicago Section to hold the. 120th meeting of the Institute in Chicago during the week of Sept. 15, 1919. The action of the Executive Committee in appointing Past President E. Gybbon Spilsbury as representative of this Institute to visit France upon the invitation of the Société des Ingénieurs Civils de France was approved. The final budget for 1918 was approved. Tile President was authorized to appoint a committee, of three members, on the Development of Activities of the Institute. The committee was requested to report at the February meeting of the Institute, and the Secretary was requested to invite each local section to have a member present to discuss the subject. The President appointed J. W. Richards, Chairman; P. N. Moore, and Allen H. Rogers. Thirty-six members, ten associates, and five junior associates were elected; one change of status from associate to member was granted; two members were reinstated; and eight resignations were accepted. An extension of time was granted to nine members. The dues of eight members were suspended on account of their being in active service.

The fifth convention of the National Foreign Trade Council was held in Cincinnati, Apr. 18, 19 and 20. More than one thousand accepted delegates were registered, the American Institute of Mining Engineers being represented by W. L. Saunders and W. N. Thayer. The convention was called to order Thursday morning, Apr. 18, in the convention hall of the Hotel Gibson; by the Chairman, Mr. James .A. Farrel, president of the U. S. Steel Corporation, and was in continuous session for two clays, several group sessions being held simultaneously. The convention adjourned Saturday morning after receiving the report of the central committee. The dominant themes of the convention were: First, "Win the War" and second, "Establish Foreign Trade on a. Firmer Basis." The discussions included textiles, lumber, chemicals, automobiles, finance, and agriculture, and also those things in which mining engineers are particularly interested, metals, oil, and coal. The report of the central committee, which was adopted, recommended the stimulation' of production of all materials required for war purposes; the subordination of all trade that will not impose new and heavy penalties on our adversaries; the maintenance of such foreign trade as will support national credit and supply materials required for military and naval purposes; the continued interchange so far as possible of merchandise and products between the United States and. Latin-America, Asia and Oceania; the immediate increase of tonnage in the north Atlantic; the cheerful and whole-hearted cooperation of importers

Diffusion in the presence of deformation was studied by the method of vacuum dezincification of copper-rich and silver-rich solid solutions containing 7 to 30 pct Zn. The specimens were designed to permit the study of diffusion in separate portions of a given specimen characterized by strain rates ranging from essentially zero to approximately 10 sec-. No effect of deformation on diffusion was observed. BEGINNING with the work of Buffington and Cohen: interest in the question of the effect of stress or strain on diffusion has largely been concentrated on the enhancement of diffusion in specimens subjected to Continuous plastic deformation. The present research is a contribution to this limited area. However, as a preliminary to focusing attention on this special topic, it will be desirable to make a broad survey of the larger question, especially since there has been considerable foreign work in areas outside those of current interest in the United States. Since most of the topics referred to in the following section are both complex and imperfectly understood at present, it has been expedient in most instances to offer only a guide to the general nature of the work rather than a critical evaluation. PREVIOUS WORK The effect of elastic stress on diffusion has received considerable attention, especially with regard to the thermodynamic driving force for diffusion. The thermodynamic treatments have been based on the work of Gibb, Voigt, Planck, and Leontovich.' Konobeevskii and Selisski6 made a first attempt at treating the problem in 1933, and Gorskii7 a few years later gave a solution applicable to single crystals as well as to polycrystalline specimens. In 1943 Konobeevski8 published treatments that have been the basis of much Russian work up to the present. For example, Aleksandrov and Lyubov used his work in explaining the velocity of lateral growth of pearlite. Early work in the United States was that of Mooradian and Norton, which showed that lattice distortion tends to be relieved before it can significantly affect the diffusion process. Druyvesteyn and Berghoutl1 observed a slight effect of elastic strain on self-diffusion in copper, while de Kazinczy12 found that both elastic and plastic deformation increased the rate of diffusion of hydrogen in steel. On the other hand, Grimes58 observed no effect of either elastic or plastic straining on the diffusion of hydrogen in nickel. High-frequency alternating stresses have been reported by various investigator s13-l5 to increase the rate of diffusion. A special form of elastic stressing is the imposition of hydrostatic pressure, a condition that is amenable to Conventional thermodvnamic analysis. Most of the experimental results in this area are consistent in showing a slight decrease in diffusion rates at high pressures.16-l8 Although Geguzinl reported a pronounced effect of relatively small pressures, Barnes and Mazey20 failed to Corroborate this finding, while Guy and Spinelli21 advanced an explanation of the phenomenon observed by Geguzin. It has been recognized that the thermodynamic treatment of diffusion phenomena in an arbitrarily stressed body is complicated by the fact that the desired state of quasi-equilibrium of the shear stresses cannot be maintained during a general diffusion process. However, attempts have been made by Meix-ner22-24 and Fasto to treat certain restricted cases, such as relaxation. FastovZ7 has also incorporated the general stress tensor into the thermodynamics of irreversible processes. The lattice strain that accompanies the formation of a solid solution has been the subject of much study,28-s0 and indirectly it has entered into many recent theories of diffusion. However, some Russian investigators31'32 have taken other views of this matter and have predicted large effects on diffusion rates because of concentration stresses.o In completing this brief resume of previous work involving elastic strains and before proceeding to a consideration of the effect of continuous plastic deformation, it should be pointed out that deformation of various additional types may also influence diffusion. The effect of cold-working on subsequent diffusion has been studied directly by AndreevaS and by Schumann and Erdmann-Jesnitzer, while indirect evidence has been obtained by Miller and Guarnieri and by Vitman.38 Thermal stresses may also influence diffusion, contributions to this subject having been made by Fastovs7 and by Aleksandrov and Lyubv. The work of Johnson and Martin,o Dienes and Damask,3Band DamaskS considered the question of radiation-enhanced diffusion. In considering previous work on the subject of plastic deformation and diffusion, attention will be directed to those studies concerned primarily with diffusion rather than with its relation to Creep, e.g., the work of Dorn, or to the acceleration of diffusion -controlled reactions.
