In preparing this symposium, our ambition was to elicit authoritative expression of opinion concerning important selected phases of the industry from men active in it. Responses to requests for contributions were gratifying, especially so in view of the short time available. The generous and cooperative spirit of the industry as a whole is amply evident. Brief Economic History of Quicksilver in the United States Quicksilver ore was first discovered in the United States at what was later the New Almaden mine in California, in the year 1824. Production also began here, but not until 1850, when it was stimulated by the active demand caused by gold-mining operations. Prospecting for quicksilver was active, high-grade ores were found and ample production lowered the price from $100 per flask in 1850 to about half that figure for the greater part of the next 10 years. During the succeeding decade, many new quicksilver mines were found; production increased at a time when the local demand diminished, so that most of the product was exported. The third decade of quicksilver mining in the United States witnessed the development of the pan amalgamation process, particularly in Com-stock silver-mining operations. A suddenly increased demand sent prices soaring, the all-time peak of quicksilver production followed, and the highest price was soon replaced by the lowest one on record. Huge quantities of quicksilver were exported between 1870 and 1880 and exports continued in decreasing measure for three decades to 1910. In

THIS paper gives observations on ground movement and subsidence resulting from pillar drawing in the Lick Run section of Montour No. 10 mine of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. adjacent to solid coal owned by the U. S. Bureau of Mines at its Experimental mine in Snowden Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. The investigation was planned by George S. Rice, chief mining engineer of the Bureau, who arranged the necessary cooperation with Dr. L. E. Young, vice president of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. Engineers of that company placed permanent monuments on the surface to establish the boundaries of the coal owned by the Bureau and to furnish fixed points to which all levels were referred. Engineers of the Experimental mine staff then covered the ground under observation with a checkerwork of monuments made of oak pegs set into the ground at 50-ft. intervals in two directions at right angles to each other. The level of these pegs was determined first from Dec. 16 to 30, 1929; again from May 25 to June 5, 1930, and finally from July 7 to 15, 1931. Observations were then discontinued because work had been stopped temporarily in this part on Montour 10 mine.

Discussion of the paper of Blarney Stevens, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 79, July, 1913, pp. 1285 to 1303. F. L. GRAMMER,Leesburg, Va. (communication to the Secretary*):¬ Mr. Stevens refers to an explanation of parallel jointing by W. 0. Crosby, which I noted when reading one of his excellent text books. It seemed to me earthquakes were not a satisfactory explanation, and I looked up several authorities; but I never realized how small the usual amplitudes were until Mr. Stevens presented his paper. Several letters to the U. S. Geodetic Survey showed me there were very few records of tidal movements of earth crust in the United States. Altitude and latitude would be influencing factors; but this diurnal movement must exceed earthquake amplitudes, besides being more nearly universal. My inquiries brought the answer that the major directions of jointing had not been extensively tabulated. If major directions of jointing were recorded-with notes as to angle with mountain chain, or North Star, and distance between joints, with nature of rock and maximum and minimum tidal up-heaval-some interesting relations might be made manifest.

The International Mining Convention held in Nelson, B; C., May 17 , to 19, was attended by nearly 500 delegates, of whom about 100 were from Spokane, 150 from the Slocan district, and the others from different points in Canada and the United States. Arrangements were in charge of the Nelson, Slocan and Eastern British Columbia Mining Men's Club, under the direction of Secretary Fred A. Starkey, assisted by the City of Nelson, Associated Boards of Trade of Eastern British Columbia and Nelson Board of Trade. The Columbia Section of the American Institute of Mining Engineers; cooperating with the Western Branch of the Canadian Mining Institute, provided the technical program, under the management of Secretary E. Jacobs, of Victoria, and Secretary L. K. Armstrong, of Spokane. Three technical sessions were held, at which the following were read: Difficulties of the Electrolytic Zinc Process, by Thomas French. Sketch of the Geology and Ore Deposits of Nelson and Kootenay Region, by Arthur Lake's. Advantages of Local Organization of National Societies, by W. H. Linney. MILTON L. LISSBERGER, ? New York, N. Y.-Solder is a mechanical mixture of tin and lead, a fact which is susceptible of very simple demonstration. A bar of solder of a grade even as low as 30 per cent. tin and 70 per cent. lead, passed through a buffing machine, will show a surface practically identical with that of a bar of second-quality or reclaimed tin. The buffings, on chemical analysis, will prove to be almost pure lead. According to the best practice, solder is made in the following manner. Virgin pig lead is first melted, and when it is thoroughly liquefied, virgin pig tin is added, together with a small amount of flux; the latter is for the purpose of bringing to the surface the so-called "liver," consisting of impurities that may have remained in either the lead or the tin as a result of incomplete refining. The combined material, when completely liquid, is thoroughly stirred for some hours, and is then cast into small pigs. Just before casting, and continuously during this operation, the molten metal yields dross, consisting largely of the oxides of lead and tin; this should be carefully skimmed off. After the pigs have cooled, they are taken to a smaller kettle, remelted, and cast into the desired shape for use; or if wires, ribbons, etc., are to be made, the solder is cast into slugs suitable for extrusion and rolling. During this second operation, the skimming of dross should be even more carefully done than at first. Hand mixing has proved to be the only reliable method for the production of the best quality of solder, irrespective of its percentages of lead and tin. The best quality of solder is not necessarily that which contains the highest percentage of tin, but rather is that composition which performs best on the required piece of work. In order to produce

INTRODUCTION Roll front uranium has unique geologic characteristics (L,) which require specialized mining procedures. Roll front uranium occurs in arkosic sandstones with the ore zone typically less than 100 feet in thickness with up to 400 feet of overburden. The areal extent of ore is often a few thousand acres. Within the ore zone, ore grade material occurs in C and S shaped rolls, which are a few feet in width and height but may run laterally for several hundred feet. Since the total mine plan may include mining all ore, a roll front uranium mine may cover a few thousand acres. For both economic and environmental reasons, a roll front deposit is mined as a series of phases or sub-pits (3, 4) as illustrated in Figure 1. A typical sub-pit is 400 to 500 feet across. Sub-pit 1 is stripped initially and the overburden is spoiled on the surface. Depending on haul distance and overburden characteristics, stripping is done with trucks and shovels (or front-end loaders) or scrapers. When ore is encountered in sub-pit 1, mining begins, and the stripping equipment is moved to sub-pit 2, with sub-pit 2 overburden also being spoiled on the surface. When ore is encountered in sub- pit 2, sub-pit 1 mining should ideally be complete so the mining equipment can move to sub-pit 2 and sub-pit 3 overburden can be spoiled in the mined out sub-pit 1 area. Ore is mined selectively in a series of 12 to 24 inch cuts by a 2-1/2 yard backhoe on the basis of radiometric probing. For effective drainage, ditches must be maintained on the boundary of sub-pits, and mining lifts are kept as level as possible, with the orebody slightly elevated as part of general good mining practice. Waste removal in the ore zone is done by self- loading scrapers near the orebodies and by push-pull or push loaded scrapers away from the orebodies. Each self-loading scraper cut is

WHEN certain binary Fe-Ni alloys are worked cold and then stabilized by a stress-relief anneal, their Young's moduli are nearly invariant over a substantial temperature range determined by composition and work-anneal history.' In the present investigation addition of molybdenum to such alloys (besides increasing the yield strength) was found to diminish the sensitivity of the thermal coefficient of Young's modulus to composition changes. Such alloys are of interest for applications requiring 1 a metal with controlled, low temperature coefficient of Young's modulus and substantial magnetic permeability.' Young's modulus ordinarily decreases with rising temperature. In ferromagnetic alloys a change in modulus on heating due to loss of ferromagnetism modifies the .temperature dependence. Far below the Curie temperature ferromagnetism alters the modulus in two ways: a—Addition of the energy of magnetization, a function of interatomic distance, changes the relation between interatomic energy and distance.' This lowers the modulus in the Fe-Ni and Fe-Ni-Mo alloys of this investigation. b—An applied stress changes the ferromagnetic domain arrangement so that linear magnetostriction contributes to the strain and further lowers the modulUs.~ Since in the alloys of this investigation both effects lower the modulus, loss of ferromagnetism on heating changes the slope of the modulus-temperature curve in a positive direction. With increasing temperature the slope of the modulus-temperature curve, due to progressive loss of ferromagnetism, becomes less negative, goes through zero (the modulus is minimum), becomes positive, and resumes its normal negative value above the Curie temperature.' The increase in modulus and decrease in curvature in the modulus-temperature curve occurring on work hardening have been attributed to a reduction in effect (b).'. Vn the absence of ferromagnetism work hardening through introduction of residual strains would be expected to decrease the modulus.' Alloy Preparation—Test Methods Four series of alloys having nominal molybdenum contents of 5, 7, 9, and 10 pct and containing 47 to 58 pct Fe (the analyzed compositions are given in Table I) were melted in air and cast as bars weighing from 2 to 6 lb. The charge consisted of electrolytic nickel, Armco iron, molybdenum (99+ pct) or ferromolybdenum (62 pct Mo), manganese, and aluminum as a deoxidizer. The bars were swaged cold to the desired diameters with intermediate anneals. Alloys in this composition range are reported" to be face-centered cubic and ferromagnetic at room temperature. The Curie temperatures" decrease with molybdenum. For example, keeping the Ni/Fe ratio at unity and increasing the molybdenum from 0 to 17 pct decreases the Curie tempera- ture from approximately 500°C to room temperature. (The 17 pct Mo alloy requires quenching to retain a single phase.~) Young's modulus at a series of temperatures from —50" to 100°C was determined by a dynamic method previously described.', " In this method Young's modulus is calculated from the resonant frequency (in this case approximately 50,000 cycles per second) of a rod sample (approximately 2 in. long) vibrating longitudinally in the first mode. The densities of the samples at room temperature, Table I, were determined by the standard method of weighing in air and reweighing in redistilled bromobenzene. The linear coefficients of expansion, Table I, needed to calculate the sample length and density at the temperature of measurement, were obtained by observing the change in length (22" to 100°C) of an 8 in. gage distance with a two microscope cathetometer. The values of density and coefficient of expansion in the few samples checked are independent of treatment to the accuracy reported. This was assumed to be general for all the samples. The modulus values are accurate to &0.05x101' dynes per sq cm. However, values of thermal change in modulus are accurate to 20.005~ 10" dynes per sq cm. Young's Modulus Values at 25°C: The modulus values of O', 5, and 10 pct Mo alloys at 25 °C are plotted in Fig. 1 as functions of nickel. After working cold, the samples were either recrystallized at 950" to 1000°C or given a low temperature stabilizing anneal at 400° C. The theory of elasticity, the science of the strength of materials, and all our calculations regarding engineering structures are based on Hooke's law, that in loaded bodies the deformations are proportional to the load producing them. Without this law it would be impossible to design intelligently engineering structures such as bridges, frames, axles, etc. This being the case, the proportional limit,l that is, the point at which deformation ceases to be proportional to load, is the most important factor in engineering design. Further, the working fiber stress should be fixed in reference to the proportional limit instead of, as is usual, in reference to the ultimate strength. The incorrect use of the ultimate strength instead of the proportional limit in setting the working fiber stress is probably due to two reasons: (1) it is a more delicate operation to measure the proportional limit; (2) it is usually assumed, though incorrectly, that the proportional limit is determined by the ultimate strength. In Germany the poin't at which permanent set first appears is often taken instead of the proportional limit. The two points will coincide if Gerstner's law, that elastic deformations are proportional to the loads producing them both before and after permanent set, is true; and the limit of proportionality and the elastic limit or point of permanent set will both be represented on a stress-strain diagram, by the point at which the line ceases to be a straight line and becomes curved or changes its inclination. It is to be further noted that the difference in definition between proportional limit and elastic limit introduces a difference in methods of determination in the testing laboratory. The German method of determining the elastic limit by alternately loading and unloading the test specimen is a lengthy process and time has in itself a very considerable influence on the results of physical tests.

This paper gives a short account of plastic deformation as observed in single crystals of zinc, zinc having been selected for the experiments described herein because the phenomena are comparatively so simple and can be studied throughout such a wide range. It is hoped that the paper will serve to show the type of information which studies of single crystals afford and will contribute toward the solution of the general problem of metallic behavior. PRODUCTION OF ZINC SINGLE CRYSTALS The method of Czochralski,1 as modified by vow Gomperz,l was used to produce the crystals studied. The equipment is shown in Fig. 1. Molten zinc is held in a crucible at a temperature which is not far above its melting point, as measured by a pyrometer. A lava disc floats on the melt, and is provided with a central hole about 1 min. in diameter. A glass tube, drawn into a capillary at the lower end, is suspended from a string which is wound up by an electric drive at the speed desired. At the start, the glass capillary is let down into the melt and the hoist is started. The capillary brings up a small quantity of molten metal with it to a point just above the lava disc. At this point, a jet of hydrogen cools it and causes it to crystallize, with the result that a -small crystal forms. As the hoisting is continued, more molten metal is drawn up, in turn to be solidified by the jet of hydrogen. This additional metal continues the growth of the crystal already formed, and a long, cylindrical crystal results. The speed of hoisting used was generally between 0.1 and 0.5 mm. per sec., and the crystals were from 4 to 6 in. long and about 1 mm. in diameter. By varying the conditions, crystals of quite different orientations were obtained and were used in the study of the phenomena to be described.

Of course some fume settles out, but is immediately carried away by the screw conveyors. H. R. BIANCO —How effective are the soot blowers ? Do you have to use any hand lancing? T. J. WOODSIDE Only one point, which is right at the top of the economizer and which the soot blowers do not reach, we occasionally hand lance. But everywhere else the soot blowers have been very effective and no hand lancing has been done. L. V. DAVIDSON*—Do you have considerable variation in the lead content of the fume collected if the lead is higher, and is there greater tendency for the fume to stick on the boiler tubes ? T. J. WOODSIDE—There is very little variation in the lead content. From 5 to 7 pct is the widest range variation we have had and we have noticed no difference in the behavior of the fume. C. R. KUZELL—Mr. Woodside has been quite generous with data pertaining to metal and fuel economics. I think he stated that the coal consumption of the furnace was 21/10 21/10 for a pound of zinc recovered. I take it that that is the gross coal input to the furnace. I wonder what the net fuel consumption in terms of coal might be after crediting the fuel equivalent of the waste heat steam recovered? T. J. WOODSIDE—The fuel value of the waste heat steam is approximately 42 pct of the heat input to the furnace. A very large part of the heat, of course, goes out in jacket water—44 pct. A. D. TERRELL*—I would like to know how much lead is in the deleaded material. T. J. WOODSIDE—It is a little less than 2 pct now.

It is well known by every one who has had to deal with boiler tubes that these are often seriously affected by a sort of corrosion, occurring as a local pitting, that frequently causes a perforation of the tube in a rather short time. The characteristic appearance of this corrosion is shown in Fig. 1. A very similar corrosion occurs in condenser tubes (Fig. 2).l A study of the microstructure or local chemical composition of the metal (iron 70:30 brass) fails to reveal any cause for this pitting. Of course one might possibly assume the starting point to be some oxide particle, causing an electrolytic local action, but this in no way explains the continued corrosion, progressing even when the assumed oxide particle must have disappeared. By the excellent work done by the Corrosion Research Committee of the Institute of Metals, and communicated, in October, 1923, to the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Newcastle-on-tyne, stress was laid on the faot that a content of entangled air has a very obnoxious effect. In the following correspondence, Sir George Goodwin stated that "engineers have, for a long time past, regarded air as the big enemy to be fought against in all questions of corrosion'72 and Kenneth Fraser pointed out that the most vital point is "the avoidance or removal of possibly the chief cause of present day corrosion, i. e. entrapped air and gases brought out of solution."3 In their reply, however, the authors state that they had "never for a moment believed that entangled air was responsible for the beginnings of corrosion, and express the opinion that the gradual liberation of air could not account for localized corro~ion."~ On consulting the many textbooks on corrosion, as that

A concentration of manganese nodule varies areally from 0 to 30 kg/m2 in the central-eastern deep sea bottom of Central Pacific Basin with depth of 5,600-5,900m, but generally it is low, mostly of the abundance order from 0 to less than some kilograms per square metres through the bottom. A high concentration over about l0kg/m is localized to the northwestern basin, besides "St. 414 Deep Sea Hill" and “GH 76-1 Trought”, and also it is likely related with the substratum of deep sea clay. Nodules are tentatively classified into nine types of Sr, SPr, SEr, Db, Ss/SPs, ISs, IDPs and V, in terms of morphology and surface feature. The types may be related with internal structure, nuculeus, mineral composition, chemical composition, occurrence and areal distribution, and might have resulted from various environmental factors of nodule genesis. The abundance of nodule at each station shows the interesting relation with acoustic records by 3.5KHz and seismic reflection profilings. In both the records, thick transparent layer over about 45m thick yield neither any nor significant amount of nodule. The layer less than 45m relates with abundant nodules up to 30kg/m2, though it yield also very little nodule in some cases. The relation suggests that the formation of nodule most likely could be related with the accumulation rate of the post-middle Eocene sedimentary sequence to some extent and also with other controlling factors. The relation can lead us to the tentative delineation of distribution of nodule deposits in the area. The comparative-consideration with the deposits in GH 74-5 area, just east- ward of the present area, shows the areal peculiarity of nodule genesis in deep sea bottom. The results of chemical analyses will be discussed elsewhere.

IN the biographical notice of Thomas F. Witherbee, published in Bulletin No. 32, August, 1909 (p. xxv), it is said that ". he is believed to have been the first manager in America to use the chemical laboratory for the purpose of controlling the regular running of the blast-furnace." Since the year is not given, I cannot decide as. to Mr. Witherbee's priority; but the statement leads me to contribute a bit of history, showing an early departure from the "rule-of-thumb " blast-furnace work to the employment of a chemist. In the autumn of 1868 the department of mining and metallurgy was established at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In connection with the assay-department a laboratory was equipped for making general commercial analyses. In January, 1869, Alexander L. Holley, the manager and builder of the Bessemer plant at the Rensselaer Works of John A. Griswold & Co., the first plant erected in the United¬States under the Bessemer patents, began to send me samples of ore, pig-iron, and steel for analysis. Early in 1869 I was regularly retained as chemist for the Rensselaer Works; and while the laboratory was not located at the works, for all practical purposes it was the works-laboratory. The increase in work soon made it necessary for me to secure an assistant. I applied to Prof. Charles F. Although the term "spalling" has long been known, Norton l first referred to its usage for the fracture or disintegration of materials subjected to rapid temperature changes. Spalling of ceramic materials at high temperatures has received attention in the past.2-4 Removal of the char formed during ablation in reentry of space vehicles has been referred to as mechanical spalling.5 The first experiments to evaluate the process of rock fragmentation by thermal spalling were conducted by Stoces6 using a series of gasoline burners on the quartz veins of the Zinnwald deep mines in Germany. After the development of rocket-jet burners, the principles of thermal spalling combined with high fluid momentum found wide practical application in rocks. The well-known jet piercing process for drilling blastholes in taconite and for jet channeling in the quarrying of granite are among the more notable of these application.7 For the purposes of this study, thermal spalling or spallation of rocks is defined as progressive failure caused by thermal stresses induced by a sudden application of heat from a high temperature heat source. Gray observes that the size of the spall is dependent on the pattern of induced thermal stresses before failure. The spallability or the relative susceptibility of rocks to failure by thermal spalling is a complex but potentially useful parameter for qualitative comparisons. Fundamental differences exist in the degree of spallability among different types of rocks. Accurate prediction of spallability of any particular rock has so far not been possible. Measurement of the state of stress and temperature in the rock during the rapid thermal spalling process poses difficult problems that must be solved. Samples of an Fe-Nb alloy were brought to equilibriurtr with hydrogen-methane mixtures in the temperature range from 950° to 1050°C, and subsequently analyzed on their carbon contents. The solubility pvoduct L = [%Nb] [%C] may be represented by the equation Approximate solubilities indirectly assessed through hardness measurements have been included from a previous report. These data are shown to be in a fair agreement with the present solubility measurements. IN an investigation based on hardness measurements by de Kazinczy, Ms, and pachleitnerl the molal heat of solution of NbC was estimated to 11.5 kcal per mole. This value was considered rather small, and an investigation using a similar technique was carried out. The results indicated a heat of solution about 35 kcal per mole.2 At this stage it was decided to determine the solubility under conditions of true equilibrium . During the course of this work a similar investigation was published by Smith. 3 His heat of solution, 41.6 kcal per mole, is not very different from the value resulting from the present work (42.5 kcal per mole). Our solubility product, on the other hand, is at considerable variance with that reported by Smith. Possible reasons for these differences are discussed below. Mori, Tokizane, and saheki 7 have studied the behavior of niobium in commercial steels, with special attention to the formation of niobium carbide, nitride, and sulfide. Assuming a carbide composition Nbco.87 based on X-ray diffraction and chemical analysis of residues extracted from Fe-Nb-C-S alloys, the molal heat of solution of niobium carbide was estimated to 35.2 kcal per mole. This chapter is a partial summary of an investigation by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) made in response to a recent request by the Assistant Secretary, Water and Power Development of the U.S. Department of the Interior, for a comprehensive review of horizontal boring technology related to underground power-line installation. This review is concerned primarily with 3 to 36-in. diam horizontal holes from several hundred to several thousand feet in length. An electric power system consists of three essential functions: generation, transmission, and distribution. The generation component includes the generating station and step-up substation; the transmission component includes the transmission line and stepdown substation at typical voltage levels ranging from 69 to 345 kv for underground lines and 69 to 500 kv for overhead transmission lines; the distribution component includes the distribution line carrying the commonly used voltages of 120, 208, and 240 v, the distribution transformer, and the line to the service customer.l The Federal Power Commission reports that 1600 miles of underground transmission lines of 60 to 345-kv capacity are now in service in the United States. By 1980, it is estimated that approximately 3000 miles of trans- mission lines will have to be placed underground.2 The cost of burying electric transmission lines underground in metropolitan areas, approximately 30 miles from the center of each of the most populated cities, will exceed $1.5 billion with the methods now available. The wide spread in unit costs of overhead and underground transmission lines narrows as right-of-way costs for overhead transmission in congested areas increase. Improved methods of underground emplacement will certainly reduce this difference in costs and even further favor underground emplacement. Also, in the future, overhead transmission lines will probably not be permitted in highly built-up areas.

In connection with an investigation in this laboratory on the high-zinc side of the copper-zinc system, it was observed that well developed segregate structures of the Widmansttten type were formed when a secondary phase precipitated from the solid solution of copper in zinc. This paper presents an analysis of the crystallographic relationship between the segregate and the solid solution matrix. The data to be presented are an interesting addition to the literature on segregate structures in that the plane of segregation is one of the less densely populated planes. In agreement with the generalization of C. H. Mathewson and D. W. Smith' the plane of segregation in the matrix contains the direction of closest atomic packing of the lattice. Furthermore, the matrix and the segregate are both hexagonal close-packed, which has not been reported hitherto in the 1iternture.l The increasing commercial importance of zinc alloys containing copper makes this fundamental study of value to the metallography of zinc alloys. Zinoeich Copper-zinc Alloys Copper enters into solid solution with zinc to at least 1.8 per cent at 400" C., according to W. M. Peirce.3 The solubility is less at lower temperatures. Thus a solid solution of copper in zinc, saturated at an elevated temperature, will precipitate the excess copper in a separate phase at a lower temperature, conditions of concentration, time, and temperature being suitable. The nature of these two phases has been established by the X-ray method of crystal analysis. Westgren and Phmgmén4 and also Owen and Preston5 have shown that the solid solution eta (7) is of the substitu-tional type with copper atoms replacing zinc atoms on the hexagonal
