Spilsbury was unanimously elected to succeed himself in January, 1915, on the Library Board of the United Engineering Society. . The President appointed Messrs. Walter Douglas, Charles E. Mills, and L. D. Ricketts as delegates to the seventeenth National Convention of the American Mining Congress, Phoenix, Ariz., Dec. 7 to 11, 1914. It was voted that the sum of $857.61, or so much of it as may be necessary, be advanced to the Land Fund from the general funds of the Institute, in anticipation of the collection of unpaid installments of subscriptions to the Land Fund; and that the Treasurer be instructed to pay to Andrew Carnegie at the present. time the sum of $2,500 on account of the Land Fund indebtedness.

The classical approach to room-and-pillar mine design in flat-lying, tabular ore bodies limits itself to the special case of an extensive and uniform system of pillars. Each pillar is then assumed to carry the same load, and this load is readily calculated from the extraction ratio e and the weight of the overburden : average pillar stress = [ ] where H is depth below surface, p is average density of overburden, and g is acceleration due to gravity. The average pillar load does not, in this case, depend on the mechanical properties of either the pillars or the surrounding rock mass. The only relevant physical property of the pillars is their compressive strength, (i.e., the maximum load-carrying ability) and the criterion for design is that the average pillar stress should not exceed this strength. The wider the pillar, the greater its strength, and the design of the system is concerned with reconciling this increase in strength to the requirements of roof control so as to optimize extraction.l Any departure from a uniform distribution of pillar loads invalidates the classical approach. Such departures may, for instance, be brought about by: (1) a nonuniform layout of pillars and remnants resulting from selective mining, (2) variations in geology which result in gross changes in the properties of part of the seam or the host rock, (3) deliberate use of abutment support in narrow panels, and (4) the use of yielding pillars for local roof support in conjunction with barrier pillars to carry the overburden load.

A survey of the literature on bottom-cast practice gives but Scant information as to some of the real facts concerning this most int'eresting method of steel manufacture, and some of the information available is very misleading. An exceptionally good description of this met,hod of pouring or teeming is to be found in an English publication2 on the heterogeneity of steel ingots. Quoting from this paper: (a) With bottom teeming, the metal rises steadily and progressively in the mold with the minimum possible agitation, the main force of the stream coming from the ladle being broken down or retarded by the down gate or runner. Further, the stream of metal from the ladle, under these conditions of casting, is invariably maintained at a much more continuous rate and is steadier than with top teeming. (b) In view of the facts referred to in (a) it follows that with bottom teeming the metal is not exposed to atmospheric oxidation to anything like the same degree as with top teeming. In this paper it is intended to detail briefly some of the advantages of bottom-cast practice and to discuss the possibilities of iron-oxide control in the basic open-hearth furnace. A description of the type of charge, ingot rnold set-up, etc., is found in detail in an earlier paper.3 Design of Ingot Molds In any kind of steel manufacture, ingot-mold design is important. L. H. In the planning and erection of smelting-works, especially of such as contain the modern large water-jacketed blast-furnaces, we are often confronted with an insufficiency in the watersupply. It may be impossible to find in the immediate neighborhood of the selected site a sufficient supply to furnish the jackets with cold water. Or there may be enough water for this purpose, but it may be highly charged with scale-forming minerals held in solution. Or, the main water-supply, if pumped from the workings of a mine, may carry iron- or copper-salts, or even some free acid in solution, all of these substances being derivable from the oxidation of sulphuret-ores in the mine. Moreover, such mine-waters sometimes contaminate the waters of the creeks, so that these become unavailable, and we have to fall back on an inadequate supply of pure water furnished by some spring or springs, entirely too small in

THIS paper outlines a time-saving graphical method of calculation for application to the interpretation of observations with the Eötvös torsion balance. Preliminary to the treatment of this short cut method which has been found practicable, the principal formu-las by which the student of interpretation can calculate the gradient and differential curvature produced by different types of bodies in different types of situa-tions are presented and discussed. It is necessary to split most geologic bodies into a series of simpler ones for which not too complicated formulas are avail-able. The gradient and differential curvature effects are calculated for each of the simple bodies and then summed to the total effect for the whole body. The calculations are considerable in number and, though more tedious than difficult, should be' entrusted to an experienced calculator. Considerable facility in qualitative interpretation can be acquired by the geophysicist from experience and from a thorough study of the types of gradient and differential curvature anomalies produced by the dif-ferent types of possible structural situations. How-ever, semi-quantitative calculations' of the probable structure bring out many relations that are not evident in a simple inspection of torsion balance results ; it throws out as impossible or improbable certain of the alternative structural possibilities that may seem equally probable under simple inspection of the results; it will determine more accurately the position of the crest of the structure; and reduce considerably the un-certainty in the interpretation and it is necessary to intelligent interpretations. The calculation of such cross-sections consists of a trial-and-error calculation of a body that will give gradient and differential curvature effects as closely as possible the same as those observed. From his knowledge of the gradient and differential curvature produced by different types of bodies, the geophysicist sketches a tentative cross-section of the structure as indicated-to him-by the observed results of the torsion balance survey, and the calculator then splits the struc-ture into blocks, and calculates the gradient and differ-ential curvature block by block. If, as rather usual, the calculated .gradient and differential curvature pro-files diverge considerably from, the respective observed ones, it is necessary to add and subtract blocks from the cross-section until a close agreement is obtained .between the calculated and observed profiles. The com-plete calculations have to be gone through for each block that is added or subtracted.

THE possibility of oil and gas production in Alabama has been little considered as yet. Gas and some oil have been found in northwestern Alabama, near Birmingham, in the Pennsylvanian beds, but the oil and gas possibilities in the Cretaceous beds are not generally appreciated. The recent activity of oil companies in that State has attracted much attention, and in this paper the main structural and the general stratigraphic features are described. Four favorable areas are outlined. These contain folds of major interest. There are other favorable areas which have not been mapped. Commercial pools discovered in this area would have the advantage of being near tidewater. Mobile, Ala., on the Gulf, of Mexico, would be the logical site for refineries and shipping facilities. A pipe line could readily be laid to that city from the Hatchitigbee and the Jackson areas. The logical outlet for the Geneva and the Gordon areas would be Panama City, Fla., on the Gulf of Mexico.

DISCONTINUITIES in the strain vs cycles to failure (S-N) fatigue curves have been reported for polycrystalline materials by Porter and Levy for copper,&apos; by Benham and Ford for mild steel,&apos; and by Williams and Stevens for 18/5 stainless steel.3 However, the considerable scatter of the points for polycrystalline materials have made a statistical analysis of the data necessary to confirm the discontinuities. By using oriented single crystals of high-purity material and low grown-in dislocation content, the reproducibility has been improved to a degree which makes statistical analysis unnecessary and clearly shows discontinuities in the S-N curves. A recent publication4 reports an abrupt change of slope in the S-N curve for ( 100) axially oriented copper single crystals fatigued in torsion. The reported discontinuities in the S-N curve, along with a different mode of failure in the two branches of the curve, have been interpreted as being due to two different amplitude-dependent mechanisms. Further work on copper single crystals of (111) axial orientation has now been completed which supports the existence of an amplitude-dependent change in the mechanism of fatigue. In the present study torsional-fatigue experiments were performed at room temperature in air on (111) axially oriented single crystals. The crystals were grown and prepared as reported in Ref. 4. Two different methods of growing the crystals also discussed in Ref. 4 produced crystals of two different perfections: Type I with dislocation density of >l06 per sq cm and Type I1 with dislocation density of <l05 per sq cm. In accordance with the accepted hypothesis that crystal flaws are primarily responsible for the scatter of fatigue lifetimes, particularly at low amplitudes, the values for the three lowest amplitudes for Type I crystal are believed to be uncertain. They are marked in braces in Fig. 1. On the other hand, at amplitudes above a surface shear strain (SSS) of *0.003, the data for both types of crystals are in agreement. Most remarkably the S-N curve for torsional fatigue of (111)-oriented single crystals is composed of three segments separated by rather large discontinuities, Fig. 1. Metallographic and X-ray measurements indicate that the lower branch corresponds to the low-amplitude (F) region of the (100) copper single-crystal results as discussed in Ref. 4, and the two upper branches correspond to the high-amplitude (H) region. The lower discontinuity in the (111) S-N curve and metallographic evidence give further support to the hypothesis that different mechanisms of failure operate for high and low strain amplitudes. Located in virgin coal acreage near Gilbert, W. Va., Massey Coal Mining Co.&apos;s Ben Creek No. 2 mine afforded the company&apos;s engineers the opportunity of designing and laying out the entire mining operation from the mine faces to the railroading loading site. However, the topography of this region posed difficult problems in haulage of coal for, in this extremely rugged terrain the uppermost coal seams lay in the mountain-top ridges, approximately 1400 ft above the valley floor. The decision for mining equipment naturally leaned to the new high-capacity continuous miners where seam conditions permitted: otherwise, to the new super-high capacity conventional cutting and loading machines. Since the coal seams lay in ridges and points of considerable outcropping, the decision was to keep the transportation on the surface and mine the coal with multiple entries into the outcrop. This way, the major problems of underground haulage, drainage, and ventilation are eliminated, and the opportunity to take advantage of a-c underground power becomes a much simpler proposition.

In 1950 the phosphate fertilizer market warranted the design and construction of a new fertilizer plant by Cominco at Kimberley, B.C. The initial rated capacity of the plant was 70,000 tons per year of high- grade ammonium phosphate. The plant was placed on-stream in 1953. One of the major problems in operating the fertilizer plant was the disposal of the gypsum tailings slurry which was a by-product of phosphoric acid manufacture. The original weight of dry tailings produced by the mill was 500 tons per day. This quantity increased over the years until a projected 2200 tpd was selected for the pond design described in this paper. The original gypsum tailing area was located south of the fertilizer plant and adjacent to the St. Mary&apos;s River. By 1965 the original disposal area had proven inadequate and Cominco&apos;s engineering staff had selected a 500 acre disposal site to the east of the plant.

Equations for the heat effects of additions of mixtures of multicomponent phases to a solution have been derived in terms of the enthalpy interaction coefficients. By these equations and the measured composition dependence of the heat effects on addition of mixtures of Ag-Cd solid solutions and elemental gold to liquid tin-rich solutions, values of the enthalpy in-teraction coefficients in tin-rich solutions at 541°K have been obtained. Analysis of these results in terms of the regular solution theory and the quasichemical theory suggests that near the melting point of the solvent association in the solution becomes important. SEVERAL recent papers have discussed the nature of dilute solutions on the basis of measured enthalpy interaction coefficients. l-3 These coefficients contribute to the understanding of the constitution of solutions and can be used for the evaluation of thermo-dynamic data of multicomponent systems. Their experimental determination, however, is laborious. This communication reports values of the enthalpy interaction coefficients of silver, cadmium, and gold in liquid tin-rich solutions obtained from the measured heat effects of additions of mixtures of Ag-Cd solid solutions and elemental gold to liquid tin-rich solutions. These measurements were made in the course of the determination of the heats of formation of Ag-Cd solid solutions reported in a concurrent publication.4 THE HEAT EFFECT OF AN ADDITION TO A SOLVENT This analysis is concerned with the addition of a mixture of multicomponent phases from the temperature To to a solvent of known composition at temperature T. p layers on n-type substrates of GaAs were prepared by difhsion of zinc into these substrates. Experimental details about the diffusion technique will be presented. It will be shown that inhomogeneity in the substrate doping level and crystal shucture defects cause nonplanarity in the junction plane. These nonplanarities give rise to high threshold current densities. From incremental sheet-conductivity measurements the zinc profile is derived. Data about surface concentration and gradient of the zinc concentration at the junction are presented. Finally, some results of laser diodes, which were made of wafers with extremely planar diffusion fronts, are discussed. ThE investigations reported here are part of a program concerned with the materials aspect in the fabrication of GaAs laser diodes. This includes studies of the influence of crystal defects introduced both during the growth of the crystal and as a consequence of subsequent diffusion. Compared with the progress made in the investigation of structure defects, for instance by X-ray microscopy in materials like silicon, no similar results are known so far for the case of GaAs. The further progress in laser diodes will depend very much upon our knowledge of these structure defects and subsequently upon our ability to avoid them. Laser diodes of GaAs had been made mostly by diffusing an acceptor impurity, normally zinc, into an n-type substrate. This procedure was found more convenient than the inverse one for various technical reasons. We will follow this line and restrict ourselves to zinc diffusion only in this paper. DIFFUSION TECHNIQUES AND EXPERIMENTAL DETAIL In order to set a refgrence for our experiments, we used a standard procedure for the diffusion runs. The diffusions were carried out in a sealed quartz tube for 2-1/2 hr at 850°C. One milligram zinc arsenide (ZnAsz) per cu cm of the tube volume served as zinc source. Under these conditions the junction depth was between 25 and 30 p. It is assumed, according to the investigations of the zinc arsenide system by V. Lyons and V. ilvestri,&apos; that ZnAs2 dissociates completely at 850°C into ZnsAsz and Asg. Since there is a condensed phase of ZnsAs2 in the tube at 850°C, the partial pressure of zinc is controlled by the pressure of the arsenic formed by the dissociation of ZnAs2. Due to the fact that the zinc partial pressure resulting from the dissociation of ZnsAsz is only a weak function of the partial pressure of arsenic, the amount of the initial ZnAs2 is not very critical. Experimentally, we found that the junction depth, as well as the surface concentration, was practically the same, if the ingots of ZnAs2 varied between 0.2 and 5.0 mg per cu cm. The wafers were oriented with the main faces in (100). Surface damage due to cutting and lapping was removed by a chemical-etch treatment in a rotating beaker (etch solution: HzSOr, H202, and HzO in a ratio 3:l:l). The GaAs substrate material was n type and doped with tellurium, selenium, silicon, or germanium. It was grown by means of horizontal or Czochralski techniques. The quenching technique has been used to study phase relations in the composition area 2FeO.SiO2-FeO-SiO2-MnO.Si02-ZMnO.SiO2 of the system iron oxide-manganese oxide-silica under strongly reducing conditions such as exist in a gas mixture consisting of equul parts of carbon dioxide and hydrogen. Liquidus and solidus temperatures of most mixtures in the composition area studied are in the range of 1173° to 1345°C. EQUILIBRIUM relations existing among the oxides of iron, manganese, and silicon are of particular interest in two areas of steelmaking: slags and ingot inclusions. Mixtures of these oxides represent about 90 pct of the slag in the acid steelmaking process, and so dominate the chemistry of the whole refining process. These constituents also play an important role in the early slags existing at the time of the "lime boil" in the basic open hearth process. If these slags are liquid, they "wet" the lumps of lime rising from the bottom of the bath, and react with them. A liquid slag rich in CaO is then formed at the very beginning of the refining. Because the temperature is still low, all conditions for a good dephosphoriza-tion are fulfilled at this stage of the operation. Metal deoxidized with ferromanganese or silico-manganese is likely to contain, as inclusions, phases made up from among the oxides of iron, manganese, and silicon. A knowledge of stability relations existing among the phases present in this system, therefore, enables one to predict the hardness of the inclusions encountered. Moreover, because the shape of the inclusions in steel has a profound influence on the physical properties of the metal, it is important to establish whether or not the oxidic material is present as liquid or crystalline phases during heating and rolling of the steel (-1150 to 1350°C). A knowledge of melting relations in synthetic mixtures of iron oxide, manganese oxide, and silica will give a clue to these problems. Methods for determining such relations and the results obtained are described iln this paper. I) PREVIOUS WORK A number cf previous studies have dealt with the three "binary"* systems bounding the system iron oxide-mangar,.ese oxide-silica. The system iron oxide-silica was studied by Bowen and shairerl in 1932. Their data were obtained by equilibration of mixtures in contact with metallic iron. Phase relations for the system iron oxide-silica ill atmospheres of different oxygen pressures car1 be derived from data on the system FeO-Fe2O3-SiO2 as determined by Muan.2 The diagram shown iri Fig. l is a section of this system in an atmosphere of CO2 and H2 in ratio 1:l. The system manganese oxide-silica has also been the subject of several investigations. Most of the early studies suffered from a lack of proper control of the atmosphere under which the equilibrations were carried mt. Phase diagrams for the system at two well defined levels of oxygen pressures have been determined recently. Glasser3 determined stability relations in an atmosphere consisting of carbon dioxide and hydrogen in ratio 5:1, diagram Fig. 2, and Muan4 studied phase relations in the system in air.

The purpose of this discussion is to comment briefly on one of the points raised in the paper. The topic is that referred to in the Conclusion 2, in which the authors note a "disproportionate increase in mixing rate" as they proceed from a displacement performed at viscosity ratio 0.998 to one at 1.002. The recovery curve of this displacement, Fig.2A, shows a quite noticeable difference between the two runs in which displaced and displacing liquids were interchanged. This difference is ascribed by the authors to the change in viscosity ratio between the two experiments. This interpretation of the experimental results must certainly be based on rather precise measurements of the fluid viscosities or, at least, of the ratio of their viscosities. The ordinary Ostwald viscometer, employed in the usual way, is only just able to distinguish between liquids whose viscosities differ by two or three parts per thousand. The experimental refinements which then must have been necessary to measure with any precision a viscosity ratio of 1.002 would be worthy of mention. Indeed, one would have expected the authors to devote at least a paragraph to the display of this technique. For the same reason - to emphasize that the details of such unusually critical experimental work should be reported and discussed in the literature — I would have liked to see some comment by the authors on the requirements for temperature control during both the viscosity measurements and the displacement experiments. The temperature coefficient of viscosity of Soltrol C at room temperature has been measured in this laboratory at about - 1.9%/1°C. How much did the coefficients for the fluid mixtures used in the experiment differ from this and from each other Even if the two fluids were identical in this respect, it would appear that a temperature difference of .l°C between them in the flow system would produce a viscosity con- trast equal to that imposed by their composition. Reference to the experimental solutions of these problems would render Conclusion 2 more credible. Published theoretical work on the stability problem contains no indication of such extreme sensitivity to the viscosity ratio in the immediate neighborhood of unity. On the contrary, perturbation calculations such as those made by Chuoke1 and Perrine2 lead to initial finger growth rates proportional to the first power of the viscosity difference. The later instability growth calculated by Scheidegger,3 using the assumption of zero pressure gradient perpendicular to the average flow, is also simply proportional to the viscosity difference. The conflict regarding the sensitivity of the dependence of instability growth or mixing rate on the viscosity contrast needs explicit recognition in the literature. In particular, it would seem that the experimental work reported here should be supported by a more detailed description of the viscosity controls. Further discussion of possible alternative interpretations of the data would also be in order. For instance, is it possible that the unconsolidstted bead pack used changed its characteristics between the runs (due, perhaps, to the handling and inverting involved in the injection of the front) Or, are the data points of Fig. 2A averages from several runs performed in a series in which the two liquids alternated as displaced and displacing fluids? To summarize, it seems to me that the relationship asserted by Conclusion 2 in the paper needs the support of more detailed experimental evidence. REFERENCES 1. Chouke, R. Steel in Venezuela in April 1947, and is disclosed for the first time in this issue (p. 178), One solid mountain of ore, Cerro Bolivar, will furnish more tonnage than the famous Hull Rust pit at Superior has, or can produce. Total resources are on the order of 2 billion tons plus. Big Steel is now moving with great speed on construction to bring out this ore, and 10 million tons are scheduled for shipment into Baltimore and Birmingham by late 1952. This ore will arrive at, Pittsburgh at a price lower than present natural ores from Superior. The Venezuelan properties will be completely mechanized. •U. S. Steel and independent companies are embarking on a taconite beneficiation program of tremendous proportions, which must be speeded to completion in the 1950&apos;s (see p. 185). By 1960 over $l.2 billion dollars will be spent on Venezuela, taconite, and Labrador to solve the United States iron ore crisis. In addition, U. S. Steel will spend another $300 million plus for a new steel mill at Trenton, N. J., before 1955. •The Deister Concentrator Co. gave $500 to the 1950 Coal Division Scholarship Fund. •Howard N. Eavenson, in analyzing the bituminous coal situation (see p. 193), suggests that anti-trust laws be extended to labor unions, disinterested trustees to administer pension funds, begin pension funds now and stop the collection of all "check-offs" for union dues or funds. •Minerals and metals worth 13.9 million dollars were produced in the United States in 1949, Secretary of the Interior Oscar L. Chapman announced. Although this value was 11 pct less than in 1948, it was the second greatest in history. Nonmetallics was the only major group that in 1949 equaled the 1948 production high. Mineral fuels decreased 12 pct and metals 15 pct. • Prospects for making gas from coal are seen to be unattractive by the Pittsburgh Consolidated Coal Co. because the success of operation depends on price and supply of coal which presently are not attractive. The company has shut down its gasification plant at Library, Pa. * Economic prospects for the immediate future in the United States are good and business probably will continue at its present high levels throughout at least the early part of 1950, Secretary of Commerce Charles Sawyer said in his year-end report to the White House based on his personal survey of business conditions. •A 467-ft well 34 miles north of Rock Springs, Southwestern Wyoming, is said to be flowing a 5 pct solution of nearly pure trona (sodium carbonate) at the rate of 10,000 barrels a day. Trona, natural soda ash, is mined for the chemical trade at Searles Lake, Calif., and from about 1500 ft underground near Green River, Wyo., and has been in short supply. •The AEC is "very much interested" in a discovery of radioactive material that has been made in Baraga County bordering Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, reported F. G. Pardee, Michigan State mining engineer. The material has been identified as uranium oxide in the form of pitchblende or uraninite. The discovery, made by a geologist of the Jones & Laughlin Ore Co., is the only instance in which the commission has certified samples of Michigan rock.

In an investigation of the decomposition of the solid solution in a cold worked high-purity aluminum alloy containing 7 pct Mg, aged at temperatures from 30o to 82°C, the nucleating sites at the earliest stages of precipitation were observed to be of two types. Nucleation occurred at the high angle grain boundaries both when the alloy was initially cold worked and when solution annealed. Nucleation also occurred at certain unique deformation markings which began to appear in abundance at approximately 30 pct reduction in thickness by cold rolling. These deformation markings were identified as deformation (kink) bands rather than as the usually assumed "slip planes." PETROLEUM&apos;S importance in World War II can perhaps be better realized by the recitation of a few facts and figures: Gasoline needs in this war are already eighty times greater than in the last war. It takes nearly three pounds of gasoline to deliver one pound of bombs, filled with petroleum explosives, on an enemy objective. Every American soldier overseas requires an average of more than fifty gallons of petroleum products per week, with the oil used by Navy and supply ships and America&apos;s Allies boosting the consumption of oil per soldier to an even higher figure. Every oil well in the United States now must produce each day an average of four barrels of oil for war and combat jobs. More than fifty million gallons of gasoline, fuel oils, lubricants, and other petroleum products are now going directly to the fighting forces every day.

Most of the treatises on metallurgy intimate that simultaneously with the development by the atomic physicist of a really satisfactory theory of the atom will be inaugurated a new epoch in the science of metals. Metallurgically and metaphorically, we shall dwell in the Utopia of Sir Thomas More. It is my privilege this afternoon to demonstrate that this state has not arrived. An atom is a miniature planetary system consisting of a positively charged nuclear sun about which revolve electrons each carrying the negative charge e. The charge on the nucleus is + Ze where Z is the atomic number and the number of planetary electrons in a neutral atom is equal to Z. These electrons are arranged in several groups having different binding energies. Ordinary x-ray phenomena relate to processes occurring deep within the atom, usually with electrons in the so-called K or L shells. Such electrons in the heavier atoms are so closely bound to the nucleus that the forces exerted by neighboring atoms in a solid are relatively inappreciable. For most practical x-ray investigation, the atom may be considered as in the gaseous phase completely isolated from its neighbors. The K radiation from an element in the gaseous state, in the solid or liquid phase, or even in combination with other elements in all its possible valences, is almost identical.‡ Visual and ultraviolet spectroscopy is concerned with disturbances of the most loosely bound outer or valence electrons of the atom, always in the vapor state.
