THE " Tar-Sands." is the name which has been given to the extensive horizontal deposit of fine Cretaceous sand, blackened by tarry petroleum, which forms the banks of the last or lowest 130 miles of the Athabasca river before it terminates in Athabasca lake. The Cretaceous strata, to which these sands belong, extend northwesterly from Dakota all the way to this lake and for 500 miles beyond it. The Athabasca river forms the uppermost section of the Athabasca-Mackenzie, one of the great rivers of the world. It rises on the Pacific side of the Rocky mountains, westward of Edmonton, and flows north of east to a point called Athabasca. Landing, 100 miles north of Edmonton, where it turns northward and runs about 280 miles before it falls into the west end of Athabasca lake. The section of this river-system which discharges the lake just named into Great Slave lake, is called Slave river, and below the latter lake it becomes the Mackenzie river. Along the section of 280 miles of the Athabasca river above mentioned, the Cretaceous strata consist of bluish-gray and drab-gray marls, on top, from Athabasca Landing to Drowned rapid, 110 miles down stream; then heavily bedded gray sandstones, 225 ft. in greatest thickness, underlying these, form the banks for about 40 miles further. The strata appear to be horizontal, but they really clip very slightly to the southward. At Drowned rapid, we see the first of the tar-sands resting on almost horizontal beds of bluish-gray limestone of Devonian age. In some places the limestone is associated with shaly or marly bands. Notwithstanding the great hiatus between the two series, the horizontal tar-sands lie conformably upon the almost level upper beds of the limestone wherever the two formations are seen together, all along the river, throughout a

The thirty-ninth meeting of the Boston Section was held at the Engi- neers? Club on Monday evening, Dec. 4, 1916. Thirty-three members and guests sat down to dinner; There were present as section guests; Dr. L. D. Ricketts, and Prof. Bradley Stoughton, President and Secretary of the parent society, and each was called upon to speak. Mr. Stoughton spoke of the growth of the Institute during the past year and described the very numerous and important activities, of which the junction of the American Society of Civil Engineers with the other three societies is perhaps the most important. Dr. Ricketts, the advertised speaker of the evening, spoke on Recent Progress in Mining and Metallurgy of Copper Ores. In discussing the improvements in mining, he traced the mining methods from square- set mining to the modified Ohio System now so successfully used at Inspiration: In metallurgy, he described the growth of reverberatory-smelting ant1 allied problems such as the utilization of the waste heat for generating steam. Looking forward to growing demand for the output of the coal mines over the next decade, producers face serious problems in meeting the market. Among the difficulties are the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, wildcat strikes, growing shortage of skilled and supervisory labor, pollution control and rising costs. The two-day program, planned by R. L. Frantz, covered all of these subjects and presented a few remarks on such wholesomely noncontroversial matters as ground support. A prediction of coal for electricity generation in 1980 was made by Philips amounting to 550 million tons, an amount equal to total output now, With respect to competition in this market, he said: "For the foreseeable future there is enough energy demand for all participating fuels." Banana oil conies not from bananas but from coal and science may just convert coal to meat loaf or some other surprising application may come out of research for product markets. Philips sees no revolution in mining methods although longwall mining will be expanded.

FROM north to south activity is picking up through- out the Labrador Trough-already shown to be one of the world's great iron ore provinces. Center of current activity and interest lies in the mid-southern part of the trough as drills, equipment, and . . . money start to pour into the area near Mt. Wright and Wabush Lake. First major announcement in the area came early this spring when J&L and CCI outlined an estimated billion-ton deposit for "future" operations. Later impetus came from rumored railway for US Steel's Quebec Cartier projects in the Mt. Reed area slightly to the south. As this issue went to press US Steel's request for bids on railway and hydroelectric construction, plus IOCC's decision to step up the time- table on its program in the Wabush Lake area east of Mt. Wright, triggered a flurry of other announcements involving many of the top U. S. and Canadian iron ore firms. Do not look for most of these place names in the average atlas . . . they aren't there yet, but they soon will be.

The reconnaissance of the Goldfield mining-district, describecl in this paper, was made in May and June, 1905, and, though this time was too short for a complete report, the work accomplished may serve as a basis for more thorough future research. Dr. Berkey has examined the rocks collected by me, and I am using his classifications. As a result of further field-work, and Dr. Berkey's examination of the rocks, this paper is an elaboration and correction of my views expressed in the Gold-$elm Sun, May 12, 1905. The sketch-map, Fig. 1, illustrates the geology of the Goldfield mining-district. Goldfield is an eruptive complex, consisting of alaskite (hinary granite), hornblende-andesite, hornblende-dacite, rhyolite, pyroxene-andesite, pyroxene-dacite (sometimes containing a small quantity of olivine), quartz-felsite, olivine-pyroxene-ande-site, and basalt. Considering this list to be arranged in the order of eruption, the age-sequence of the rocks conforms to Richthofen's law, formulated in 1868. From his observations in Europe and America, propylite, andesite, trachyte, rhyolite and basalt, occurring together, succeed one another. In a general way, the medium and the more acidic rocks precede the most basic—a result supposed by some to hare arisen from their position beneath the. surface, and due to a rude stratification by gravity in the original cooling magma during the older history of the earth, or to the same differentiation occurring during a quiescent (molten ?) period preceding eruption, being aided by the ease with which acidic rocks, mixed with water vapors, become fusible. In a letter to Prof. L. P. Breckenridge, chairman, urging the continua-tion of the Fuel Conservation Committee of the Engineering Council, Edwin Ludlow calls attention to the millions of tons of culm in the an-thracite region that can be utilized in properly equipped plants and the electricity generated transmitted to. New York, Philadelphia, and other nearby cities. He says: "Experiments have shown the economic value of No. 4 Buckwheat, which passes through a 1/16-in. mesh and over a 1/32-in. mesh. Culm passing through a 1/32-in- mesh is pulverized until it passes through a 300 mesh and is then burned under boilers. Two plants of this kind are now in successful operation in the anthracite region. Another rather interesting experiment was using 30 per cent. of this pulverized coal with 70 per cent. of oil in the generation of steam in the place of pure oil. This utilization of the fine anthracite, which has always been a waste product and thrown away, is not only fuel conservation in its truest sense but in the case of a bituminous strike, when no strike is contemplated in the anthracite field, will furnish fuel to manufacturing plants that otherwise would be obliged to shut down."

In the above ?o represents the instantaneous strain on loading, ?t the limit of transient creep, ?S the steady-state creep rate, t the time, and ? a constant leading to the exhaustion rate of transient creep. It was noted that this equation was similar in form to that proposed originally2 by McVetty. This type of equation was also suggested by Andrade and Aboav3 in studies of the shear strain of cadmium. Calculation of the constants ?o, ?t, ?, and ?s, in Eq. [ l] is somewhat involved due to the slight complexity of this relationship. In the paper by Garofalo a computer approach based on a least-squares analysis was recommended. Such an approach involves a trial and error solution but when a computer facility is available the difficulties in this calculation are of little consequence. It does mean however that the evaluation of this type of equation would become quite tedious if computer facilities were not available. Some recent studies have identified a fairly straightforward method for calculating the constants in the Garofalo equation. A study has been made of the transformation kintetics and morphology in gas-quenched Fe-5 pct Ni alloys. Massive ferrite or nlurtensite was found to form at temperatures in agreement with earlier results. Surface Preparation appeared to have the greatest effect in determining the type of transformation Product formed. Grain size change, subgrain morphology, and dislocation densities of massive ferrite were essen-tinlly invariant functions of cooling rate. The mar-tens~tic structures were typical of transformation in austenite grains of the order of the sample thickness. BY introducing the idea of a massive transformation in dilute iron-base alloys, Gilbert and Owen in 1962 served to stimulate a closer inspection of phase transformations in ferrous systems.' A wealth of literature has followed concerned with the morphology,2-5 transformation mode,2'3'6-8 and thermodynamics of transformations.2,5,9 interesting controversies have resulted from the experimental observations; closer attention has been paid to the definition of massive transformations and still to be resolved is the Ms temperature of pure iron. The purpose of this note is to report some observations made in a detailed kinetic and metallographic examination of the transformations that occur in gas quenched Fe-5 pct Ni. The results are pertinent to the Ms extrapolations that have been made for pure iron and the observed substructure of massively transformed alloys. PROCEDURE The material used in this investigation was cast as a 5 lb vacuum induction melted, carbon deoxidized heat. The ingot was hot worked to a strip 0.10 in. thick, decarburized, and cold rolled to final thickness. Specimens were punched to sample shape and decarburized in wet hydrogen at 600°C. The chemistry of test specimens is indicated in Table I. Samples 1 by $ in., by thickness were resistance heated and rapidly cooled in an apparatus as illustrated in Fig. 1. Similar helium quenching apparatuses have been described previously;2,6'10 the distinguishing feature of this apparatus is the nozzle geometry. Twin nozzles with three convergent-divergent, sonic ports were mounted perpendicular to the specimen for quenching purposes. The specimen temperature was monitored with an intrinsic 3 mil chromel-alumel thermocouple spot welded to the specimen and con- nected to an oscilloscope. A single switch stopped the current flow through the specimen, opened a gas flow solenoid valve, and initiated an oscilloscope sweep. Cooling rates were read directly from a photograph of the oscilloscope trace and the quenching rates quoted later were made at a point immediately prior to transformation on the trace. All quenching studies were conducted either under a vacuum of 10"-5 torr or a helium atmosphere. The sample geometry was chosen large enough to permit optical and electron microscopy to be performed on samples. The samples were electropolished for both types of examination in a perchloric-acetic solution. Electron microscopy was conducted on a HU 11A microscope operated at 100 kv. Dislocation densities were determined at the same general operating reflection (110) on foils thick enough to produce Kikuchi patterns. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Transformation Temperature Observations and OD-tical Microscopy. The quenching results of this study are illustrated in Fig. -2(a). Samples which were treated in the as-decarburized condition transformed in a manner similar to that reported previously—a decrease in transformation temperature occurred as the quenching rate increased until a plateau region was reached. Within the scatter of the results obtained here, there was no break in the transformation temperature-quenching rate plot. This suggests no change in transformation mode. Further metallographic examination confirmed this observation. A martensitic transformation was obtained for similarly treated samples except that the surface was first electropolished. The Ms temperature was approximately 85°C below the plateau determined for the unpolished samples and cooling rates as slow as 2000°C per sec were adequate for producing marten-site. In a study of the principal factors affecting the transport of coal-water mixtures through a centrifugal pump and a pipeline, the interrelation between solids concentration, velocity, and pressure drop was established for a minus 2-in. bituminous lump coal in concentrations up to 48% by weight. Optimum concentrations were found to exist for maximum capacity of a given pipeline and for minimum energy requirements per ton of coal. Coal size degradation by particle fracture took place in the pump; abrasion and attrition to form fines took place in both pump and line. A novel system of studying flow of solid-liquid mixtures in pipelines by the determination of relative sound intensities was developed. The hydraulic transport of minerals is in part an established art and in part a relatively new field of industrial technology. The established art developed especially where the mineral was under water, where water was used in hydraulic mining, or where large quantities of water had to be pumped from the mining site to expose the mineral. Power requirements and limited life of pumps and pipelines, under such conditions, were relatively unimportant. Examples may be found in dredging, and in hydraulic mining and transportation of phosphate rock.' In the design of a coal pipeline the most needed information relates to flow characteristics, power requirements, pressure drop, size degradation, and size segregation as a function of solids-water ratio and size distribution of the mineral. A considerable amount of information has become available concerning pressure drop and energy requirements.2'3 These topics were therefore not studied intensively. Coal degradation, however, has not been clearly delineated. Lammers and coworkers4 showed that coal may be severely degraded in size but did not distinguish between degradation produced in the pump and in the line. It is the primary purpose of this paper to outline techniques used to acquire some of the much needed design data. A full report of the investigation is to be published by the Bureau of Mines at a later date. APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE The apparatus for circulation tests (hereafter referred to as Type III tests) consisted essentially of a loop and a centrifugal solids handling pump, with attendant instrumentation, and coal weighing and feeding equipment. It also included an adequate water supply, as shown in Fig. 1. The selection of 6-in., schedule 40, carbon steel pipe was based on the top size of coal to be used. Assuming that the top size of coal should not exceed 1/3 the inside diameter of the pipe, a 6-in. pipe would accommodate 2-in. coal, a realistic size for transport from the mine face. An 872-ft loop was constructed first. Later a few tests were made with a lengthened circuit of 1361 ft by superimposing an additional loop on the original one. All bends used were of 3-ft radius. A noisemeter microphone, taped to the pipe at various points, but generally about 50 ft downstream of the pump, was used to sense segregation of the coal and the length of slugs of coal in water. To measure the stream velocity, radioactive sources were encapsulated in plastic cubes. The specific gravity of the blocks was adjusted to 1.3 and 1.8 to simulate low ash and high ash coal particles. Their passage through the pipeline was detected by a Geiger counter. THE following article covers the history of a metallurgical campaign, commenced in March, 1905, at the mines of the Socorro Gold Co., in the so-called desert region of Yuma county, Arizona. The results obtained were simply a function of necessity, as will be seen from the description of the local economic conditions and the character of the ores treated. The mines and mill of the Socorro Gold Co. are located near the small village of Harrisburg, about 60 miles from Congress Junction, Arizona, which, at the time this work was undertaken, was the nearest railroad station, and from which all supplies were brought by wagon through the desert, at a cost varying from $10 to $15 per ton in addition to the railroad freights. Wood, the only available fuel, cost $7 per cord. Water for all purposes was pumped to the plant from a well in the valley about 4 miles away. Under the Arizona law, a working-shift is 8 hr. Wages were $6 per day for foremen and mill-men, $4 per day for blacksmiths and engineers, $3.50 per day for miners, and $3 per day for shovelers and trammers. The ore consisted of quartz, in which, above the 250-ft. level, the iron-minerals were largely oxidized and some free gold was visible; below that level few traces of oxidation occurred, and pyrite constituted the principal mineralizer in the quartz, together with occasional pockets of galena and a few eccentric specks of covellite. The 20-stamp mill was equipped with plates for amalgamation, and three Standard tables for concentration. The tails from the tables were elevated by a centrifugal pump to a launder, by which they were conveyed to a 60-ton cyanide-mill for further treatment. The cyanide-mill was erected at so great a distance from the stamp-mill that a separate crew of workers and a separate power-plant were necessary. Adsorption of potassium dodecyl xanthate from aqueous solutions on artificial and natural zinc sul-fides was studied by means of infrared absorption spectroscopy. The adsorption species and their stabilities varied depending upon the conditions of the surfaces of the zinc sulfides. Adsorption products were analyzed after they had been removed from the surface with pyridine. Zinc dodecyl xanthate was confirmed for surfaces covered with oxidized products while dodecyl alcohol and carbon disulfide were detected on purified or weakly oxidized surfaces. It is of great significance to study the adsorbed species of collectors on the surface of sulfide minerals with a view of increasing our understanding of the mechanism of flotation. Compared with other methods, infrared spectroscopy promises to be of particular value in determining the nature of the species adsorbed at the mineral/solution interface since it gives direct identification of the adsorption products; and, furthermore, it has an advantage over the electron diffraction technique which has been employed in similar problems in that infrared spectroscopy utilizes radiation of very low energy so that the probability of changing the unstable surface films during examination should be correspondingly decreased. Infrared spectroscopic studies concerned with sulfide mineral flotation have already been reported by several investigators on zinc sulfide-hexanthi01' and lead sulfide-xanthate2,3 systems. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the adsorption of potassium dodecyl xanthate (KDX) at the zinc sulfide-aqueous solution interface by means of infrared spectroscopy. Rarely is the pure zinc sulfide-xanthate system encountered in practical flotation since zinc sulfide is usually activated with small amounts of certain metallic ions, such as copper ion. However, investigation of the pure zinc sulfide-xanthate system appeared promising for studying the fundamental mechanism of the adsorption of xanthate on the sulfide minerals. Although there are few cases where xanthates having an alkyl radical higher than hexyl are employed in practical operations, KDX was used in this study since it was reported that the adsorbability of xanthate on zinc sulfide was increased with an increasing number of carbon atoms of the alkyl radicals.4 EXPERIMENTAL Samples: Experiments were made on artificial zinc sulfide and natural sphalerite. The artificial zinc sulfide was obtained commercially from Dainihon Toryo Co. as a fluorescent pigment of the purest grade A. Considering the fact that there are often cases where the surface of sulfide minerals are apt to be oxidized so that the adsorption of xanthate at sulfide mineral/solution interfaces may be substantially affected, two different procedures were employed in preparing the samples of the artificial zinc sulfide. 1) The zinc sulfide was washed with hot concentrated ammonium chloride solution (300 g per liter) to remove surface oxidation products and followed by washing with deoxygenated hot distilled water by centrifugation until the constant electric conductivity of the solution was reached (Sample I) (specific conductivity of the solution = 8.6 x l0-5 ohm-' cm-'). 2) Sample I in a suspension of 5% by weight was oxidized with a 1.5% aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution for about one hour, and then was washed with distilled water as mentioned in the preparation of Sample I (Sample 11) (specific conductivity of the solution = 1.0 x 10"4 ohm-' cm-'). Both Samples I and II were dried under vacuum and stored in a vacuum desiccator. The specific surface areas of the samples determined by the BET method using carbon dioxide gas were 19 x l04 cm2 per g for Sample I and 35 x l04 cm2 per g for Sample 11. In addition, a sample which was derived from Sample I was also prepared. In 40 ml of 3 x 10-2 M zinc sulfate solution was placed 2 g of Sample I for 2 hours, washed with distilled water by successive centrifugation until no sulfate ion could be detected and dried under vacuum (Sample 111). THE geophysicist is interested greatly in the resistivities of different formations or parts of the earth's crust; sometimes he is interested in a single figure in the nature of an average, or what may be called the effec-tive resistivity, of all the formations or parts of the crust at a given location to a certain depth. Conversely, the engineer whose work is concerned with the coordination of power and communication lines in such a manner as to avoid electrical interference between these two types of facilities is concerned very much with this effective resistivity; to a lesser extent he is interested in the resistivities of individual forma-tions. In connection with his work the coordination engineer often estimates the effective resistivity; of the earth from measurements of the mutual impedances of lines; in other instances he derives front measure-ments of a different type the resistivities of different layers of the crust and synthesizes these to obtain an estimate of the effective resistivity. In connection with problems concerning the coordination of power and telephone lines, measurements from which earth resistivities can be estimated have been made at many points in the United States by the American Telephone and Telegraph Co. and its associated companies, in cooperation with various power companies and with railroad companies having electrified sections of line. Other such measurements have been made by the Joint Subcommittee on Development and Research of the Edison Electric Institute and the Bell Telephone System. A study has been made of the correlation of these data with the ages and types of materials of the strata of the earth's crust at each of the test locations. The purpose of this study has been primarily to provide information to assist in predicting the order of magnitude of effective resistivities to be used in the preliminary consideration of problems con-cerned with the coordination of power and communication lines. To make the results of such a study, most useful, it is essential that the geo-logical data to be secured when such a prediction is wanted be readily obtainable. IN an age when anything short of miraculous can and does happen it is entirely too easy to become labeled as a prophet. After the first wave of hysteria over atomic weapons died down there were crystal gazers enough in that field. The mining fraternity, always anxious to get back to normal anyway, looked, was duly impressed, and passed on to more mundane affairs. After all it was just another big blast in the stopes of life. After we "laymen" had seen the effects at Hiroshima and been granted a peek into the phenomenon of Numbers 4 and 5, we saw, indeed, that it was a tremendous but understandable weapon. Now it appears that we may fall heir to much of the defensive planning of the future. If, as our military planners tell us, it will be necessary to go underground for defense, then we are the true forerunners of a race of troglodytes. The underground belongs to us as to no other profession; the subsurface is our prerogative. Already the big mistakes in planning atomic defense are being made. It is within our ability now to correct them. Surveys are being made of natural caverns to be used as a basis for military planning. This is our first big mistake. Even if the natural caverns, many of which Nature has precariously carved from cherty and brittle limestones, could withstand the seismic force of a proximate blast without major roof failures, there is a more serious argument against the blanket use of natural caverns as a first line of defense. An AIME transaction by P.L. Allsman (1960), "Analysis of Explosive Action in Breaking Rock," contains many useful concepts applicable to blast design. Of special interest was the derivation of a heave blasting burden formula, which is important in establishing the maximum burden. Unfortunately, its derivation contains a fundamental error and then a compensating one. This formula was: [bImpulse _P d At max =nwuwu where: bmax = maximum burden in m (ft). A= duration of the average detonation pressure in sec. n= 3.1416. w= specific weight of rock in N/m3 (lb per ft3). u= minimum velocity that must be imparted to the rock in m/sec (ft per sec). d= borehole diameter in m (ft).] The derivation used the impulse-momentum principle, with a 0.3 m thick (1 ft thick) radius of rock mass being acted on by an explosive impulse. However, the rock weight was not converted to mass by dividing by the gravitational constant. This mistake can be verified by checking the units in the formula, which resolve into m1/2-sec instead of meters. Adding the gravitational constant corrects this: [P d Atbmax =gu g = gravitational constant equal to 9.81 m/sect (32.2 ft per sec2).] If the minimum velocity is now taken as 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec), as was recommended, excessively large burdens result. Any appropriate rock velocity should be capable of throwing the rock mass a minimum distance so that the swell needed for breakage can occur. Unless the burden is extremely small and the bench height is very high, it is unlikely that a velocity of only 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec) will be sufficient. A review of the literature indicates that average rock velocities observed by camera studies typically range from 15 to 30 m/sec (50 to 100 ft per sec) (duPont deNemours and Co., 1977; Tansey, 1979). On this basis, a minimum rock velocity of about 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) would be expected and not 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per see). When a velocity of 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) is inserted into the corrected formula, the results approximate those of the original formula with a velocity of 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec). An ore containing chalcopyrite was microbiologically leached in 6 ft columns at particle sizes ranging from -2 +1 ½ inches, to -3/8 + 3/16 inches. The rate of leaching increased exponentially as the particle size decreased. The controlling factor was the active leaching volume made up of the particle surface area and the depth of penetration of the bacteria and leach liquor into the particle. This volume became an increasingly larger part of the total volume as the particle size decreased. The sample under test leached poorly at larger particle sizes and it was calculated that under commercial conditions, it would produce at best a pregnant solution containing 100 mg/l (0.2 lb/ ton) of copper per 100 ft of dump height.

The shaft has four compartments, as shown in fig. 1. Equipment: Riddell Mucker: The mucking was done by a clamshell bucket and a Riddell mucker, which, as in other shafts sunk with this machine, consisted of a carriage mounted on axles with double flanged wheels that traveled back and forth on a swinging track, parallel to the long axis of the shaft (fig. 2 to 6). Three air motors were mounted on the carriage; one hoisted the clam, one operated the bucket opening and closing device, and the third moved the carriage along the track. The carriage was designed with guide shoes and could be hoisted to the surface in either skip compartment without trouble (fig. 4). During blasting operations the clam was tied on the rails and the carriage was hoisted up a few sets to protect it from flying rock. No attempt was made to hoist the carriage and clam together lest the clam catch in the timbers. The track on which the carriage operated was built of extra heavy 6 in. pipe with 1x2 in. strap welded on top for rails. A Yzx4 in. angle was welded on the bottom of the 6 in. pipe with a 1 in. round rod welded in the angle for a filler and additional strength. The end or cross pieces of the track which kept the track to gauge, were also made of reinforced, heavy 6 in. pipe and were bolted to the long members on which the carriage traveled (fig. 2 and 3). This section of track was used, instead of heavy railroad rails, for two reasons: (1) this section would bend before it snapped and was much safer for the men in the bottom; and (2) it was a better blasting shield, and protected the timbers better, in fact, only five wall plates were broken by blasting in 1926 ft of shaft, although 150 to 225 lb of 40 pct powder was loaded per round, depending on the ground conditions. The swinging track was supported by four % in. hoisting cables anchored to the end plates. There were also four safety cables fastened two to three sets above the carriage, which would catch the carriage if one of the supporting cables should fail for any reason (fig. 7). Clamshell Buckets: Two clams were used, each of % yard capacity, both manufactured by Blaw-Knox, Nos. 662 and 663. The No. 663 clam was 4 in. wider and 5 in. shorter than the No. 662, but seemed to dig and load more satisfactorily. It was easier to hoist and lower when it came up for repair. The eutectic morphology is influenced by the presence of lhree-nned dendrites 0-f MgzZn11 which may conlrol /he rricroslrccture by acting as nuclealion sites. In recent years there has been much interest in eutectic solidification and several theories have been proposed. One of the confusing factors is the existence of various morphologies in which the solidified phases may form. The lamellar microstructure seems to be most common in metal eutectics, and it has been claimed' that all regular eutectics should be lamellar if sufficiently pure. However, there still remain eutectic alloys which are not lamellar or which change their morphology as a function of growth conditions. The eutectic between zinc and the intermetallic phase Mg2Znll was chosen for this investigation because it has been found to solidify in more than one morphology. The diagram in anssen' locates the eutectic point at 3.0 wt pct Mg and 367°C. lliott gives 364°C as the eutectic temperature, leaving the phase compositions unaltered. Since the growth conditions determine the micro-structure of the solidified alloy, the factors controlling the transition from one morphology to another could be studied. The lamellae to rods transition is of particular interest. PROCEDURE Alloys were prepared from carefully weighed portions of 99.999 pct Zn and 99.97 pct Mg by melting in Pyrex containers under argon and casting into graphite boats. The resulting ingots were remelted under argon and solidified unidirectionally in a horizontal tube furnace at growth rates ranging from 2.0 to more than 50 cm per hr under a temperature gradient, measured over a 5-cm length, of 9" to 14°C per cm. The solid-liquid interface appeared to be planar at all growth rates although no attempt was made to confirm this by decantation or quenching. A few ingots were allowed to freeze uncontrolled. Most alloys were of the nominal eutectic composition, 3.0 wt pct Mg according to Hansen2 and lliott, but some contained as much as 3.35 wt pct Mg. Chemical analyses were not run since metallographic examination confirmed that the desired composition was achieved. Specimens were cut from the middle portion of the ingot normal to the growth axis, polished mechanically, and etched with 2 pct Nital. Suitable areas were selected for the determination of crystallographic orientation relationships by a tiontechniqueof described previously by one of the authors.4 The (2310) planes of zinc and the (8701, {944}? (1032) planes of Mg2Znll were found suitable for orientation determination; experimental error was on the order of 2 or 3 deg. RESULTS Three different morphologies were found in the unidirectionally solidified alloys: lamellar eutectic, rod-like eutectic, and a structure whose most predominant characteristic was the presence of three-vaned (cellular) dendrites of Mg2Znll. These dendrites were only found in alloys with more than the eutectic amount of magnesium. In some ingots fine hexagonal needles of Mg2Znll surrounding a core of MgZn2 were observed. They were probably due to incomplete alloying and seemed to have no effect on the eutectic morphology. In addition hexagonal spirals like those discussed by Fullman and wood5 and Hunt and acksonh ere observed in some ingots frozen without directional control. Both MgZZn,, and MgZnz were detected by X-ray diffraction in these alloys. Since the morphology could not be grown unidirectionally and no characteristic orientation relationship between the phases was found, further study was limited to the lamellar: rodlike, and three-vaned dendrite morphologies. Alloys of Eutectic Composition, No Dendrites. The mcrostructures of allovs with no three-vaned dendrites were either lamellar or rodlike depending on the growth rate. At rates below 10 cm per hr the morphology was lamellar, consisting of two sets of parallel plates intersecting at about 54 deg like the Mg-MgzSn eutectic described by raft.7 At growth rates faster than 14 cm per hr the microstructure showed rods of zinc in a matrix of MgnZnll, while intermediate rates yielded mixtures of rods and lamellae in small groups. The lamellar "grains" were often several millimeters in cross section, but contained small irregular areas which divided each grain into perfect islands 100 or 200 p in diam. Lamellae were parallel to each other throughout the grain in spite of these defects in the structure, Fig. 1. Rods, on the other hand, could only be produced in small groups arranged like fish scales and separated by irregular areas of appreciable thickness, Fig. 2. Alloys Not of Eutectic Composition, With Dendrites. In alloys with 3.1 to 3.35 wt pct ME,-. three-vaned dendrites bf MgzZnll were usually found surrounded by eutectic. At growth rates slower than about 10 cm per hr the dendrites were separated from each other by small areas of both lamellar and rod eutectic, Fig. 3.

THE shutdown of Homestake by Government order L-208, with its consequent disruption of a very stable and trained working force, coupled with postwar inflation and the coincidence that a mining depth had been reached that posed problems of ventilation, access to exploration areas, and choice of mining methods that would be applicable to zones of greater rock pressures made a very searching analysis of every phase of Homestake's operations a necessity. Any changes to be made had not only to meet the problems of deeper mining but also had to provide greater efficiency so that the mine might operate at a substantial profit until such time as a gold price adjustment might be forthcoming that would offset post-1945 inflation.
