THE conventional method of making water gas involves individual plants for the separate carbonization of coal to coke and the subsequent gasification of coke with steam. The process demands lump coke, preferably made from the best quality of coking coals. The ash in the coke should have a high melting point and the gasification process suffers a loss of efficiency when cokes with law ash-melting points are used. In Britain, these coals are generally the most expensive and they are readily available only in certain localities. The coals not suitable for making lump coke, or yielding only poor quality coke, are much more widely available and are generally cheaper. DEVELOPMENT OF ALTERNATIVE PROCESSES In Germany, processes have been developed and operated commercially for the production of water gas from very low-rank coals such as brown coal and lignites, but much less effort has been spent on processes to use coals of intermediate rank, which are widely available in Britain. The brown-coal processes use coal in the form of either dust or briquettes. The most successful of the dust-gasification methods is the Winkler process, which made a substantial contribution to German oil production during the war. It uses coal in the site range 0 to 8 mm and the fuel bed is blown with a mixture of oxygen and steam at a rate high enough to give it a characteristic boiling motion or, in present-day phraseology, at a rate more than sufficient to fluidize it (Fig. 1). Air cannot be used to provide the heat required for gasification, for various reasons. In the first place, to make the process continuous by mixing air and steam would involve the production of a lean gas-containing much nitrogen. If a separate blow were used, a large amount of potential heat would be lost because the blow gas in such a process would contain a very high percentage of carbon monoxide. Oxygen is necessary therefore and oxygen remains relatively expensive for use in gasification. In the Winkler generator, formation of clinker caused by local overheating does not occur, because of the mobility and high heat transfer of a fluidized bed. THE John Fritz Medal was presented to Ambrose Swasey of Cleveland, Ohio, in the Auditorium of the Engineering Societies Building, in New York, on April 23. Charles F. Rand, Chairman of the Board of Award, presided and, after speaking very briefly of Mr. Swasey, whose friend he has been for a great many years, ,introduced Gen. William Crozier, formerly Chief of Ordnance, U. S. Army, who spoke most entertainingly of, Mr. Swasey's accomplishments in designing and manufacturing instruments of precision, particularly for the use of artillery in range finding: Dr. William Wallace Campbell, Director of the Lick Observatory, and President of the University of California, described Mr. Swasey's, contribution to astronomical advancement by his notable development of the largest telescopes in this country.

Prior to 1927 the lead blast furnace charge at El Paso consisted principally of direct-smelting carbonate ores, very low in zinc, and the resulting slag seldom carried more than 4.0 pct. With the exhaustion of the mines in Northern Mexico which supplied these ores, they were supplanted with a much smaller tonnage of sulphide concentrates containing appreciable amounts of zinc, and the zinc content of the slag rose to 10.0 pct. The Anaconda Company's slag fuming plant at East Helena, Montana, had then been in successful operation for several years, and it was immediately recognized that, while at that time the production of high zinc slag was small, if the grade held, a plant for the recovery of zinc from the accumulated slag might some day be practical. The grade not only held but became increasingly higher so that by 1946 suffcient slag had been accumulated to warrant the construction of a fuming plant regardless of future slag production from the blast furnaces, and with the removal of Government restrictions on construction at the end of the war the project was undertaken. The general design of the plant follows that at Bunker Hill, with waste heat boiler, unit coal pulverizers and even more extensive instrumentation and automatic control. The area around the lead blast furnaces is rather congested, being cut off from the nearest feasible site for the fuming plant by the copper plant, so that the most practical route for hot slag transfer is through the converter aisle. For this reason and also to make use of the existing converter cranes to serve the fuming furnace, an unused reverberatory at the north end of the converter building was dismantled and the fuming furnace and boiler located in its place. A flue at right angles to the furnace and boiler runs northward to the U-tube coolers and baghouse (Fig 1). From the bag-house a steel flue runs eastward to an existing and long unused 300 ft con- Crete stack. The coal handling system and de-leading plant lie north of the furnace and east of the cooling tubes and baghouse. The furnace is conventional, 8 X 21 X 33 ft high inside and completely water jacketed (Fig 2). There are 21

The adsorption density of ethyl xanthate on pyrite was determined as a function of xanthate concentration. Surface preparation of the mineral appears to have asafunctionsome effect on the subsequent adsorption process, A monolayer of xanthate on the surface is exceeded only in presence of oxygen. The effect of OH- , HS- (and x and CN- S=)and on the amount of xanthate adsorbed was investigated. Competition between OH- and X- (xanthate) ions for specific adsorption sites is indicated over a wide pH range. IN the flotation of sulfide ores, xanthates are most commonly used to prepare the surface of the mineral to be floated so that attachment to air takes place. The quantity of agent required to make the mineral hydrophobic is usually very small, of the order of 0.1 to 0.25 lb per ton of mineral. Details of the mechanism of pyrite collection are for the most part unsettled. Adsorption of collector has long been believed to involve an ion exchange mechanism as demonstrated for galena' and for chalcocite.2 In the work on chal-cocite it was also demonstrated that a film of xanthate radicals unleachable in solvents that dissolve alkali xanthates, copper xanthate, or dixanthogen was formed at the surface of the mineral. The unleachable product increased with increasing addition of xanthate up to a maximum corresponding to an oriented monolayer of xanthate radicals. Pyrite is extremely floatable with xanthate if its surface is fresh.9 ut the floatability decreases rapidly as oxide coatings increase in abundance. Pyrite shows zero contact angle when in contact with ethyl xanthate solution at pH higher than about 10.5;4 at neutrality, a contact angle of 60" is obtained at a reagent concentration of 25 mg per liter. Alkali sulfides and cyanides are pyrite depressants. In this study of pyrite collection the writers have sought to relate measured xanthate adsorption to the method used in preparing pyrite, to the presence or absence of oxygen, to concentration of hydroxyl, hydrosulfide, sulfide, and cyanide ions. The principal experimental tool has been radioanalysis," " using xanthatcx marked with sulfur 35. Experimental Materials Pyrite: Unlike most sulfides, pyrite is a poly-sulfide. The structure given by Bragg7 resembles that of sodium chloride, the iron atoms corresponding to the position of sodium and pairs of sulfur atoms corresponding to the position of chlorine. The edge of the unit cell in pyrite is 5.40 A and in halite 5.63 A. The S-S distance in pyrite is 2.10 A; the Fe-S distance, 3.50 A: and the Fe-Fe distance, 3.82 A. Natural pyrite from Park City, Utah, was used in this investigation. Pyrite 1 was obtained by hand picking pure crystals. Pyrite 2 and Pyrite 3 were obtained from finer textured crystalline material containing inclusions of silicates. The same cleaning technique was utilized for the preparation of Pyrite 2 and Pyrite 3, whereas a different cleaning technique was used for Pyrite 1. Pyrite 1 was prepared as follows: The crystals were ground in a porcelain ball mill and the 200/400 mesh fraction was separated by wet screening with distilled water, followed by washing for 1 hr with deoxygenated distilled water acidified with sulfuric acid to pH 1.5. The acid was removed by rinsing with deoxygenated distilled water on a filter until a pH of 6.0 was reached in the effluent. This filtration was carried out under nitrogen. The sample was then dried in a desiccator under nitrogen. The period of time for which this pyrite sample was in contact with water containing oxygen was about 4 hr. The specific surface as determined by the BET gas adsorption method was 582 cm2 per g. Final material assayed 53.12 pct sulfur and 46.5 pct iron (theoretical, for FeS,: S, 53.45 pct; Fe, 46.55 pct). After crushing, Pyrite 2 and Pyrite 3 were washed with 1 M HCl. rinsed, and fed to a laboratory shakinq table to remove the small amount of silicates. The concentrate obtained was ground in a laboratory steel ball mill. The 200/400 mesh fraction was separated by classification in a Richards hindered settling tube. This fraction was then given a final wash with 0.1 M HCl and deoxygenated water was filtered through the sample. The final effluent showed a conductivity equivalent to that of a solution having a salt concentration of 0.3 ppm. Aqueous hydrogen sulfide solution was then added to the sampln (about 100 ml saturated H,S solution to about 1000 g pyrite under a few hundred milliliters of water) which was stored wet under nitrogen. Several productive areas in the Mid-Con-tinent are broadly and briefly examined with respect to the present depth of drilling on productive structures, and the thickness of sediments remaining untested. Evidence is offered to show that a vertical mile to two miles of untested but prospective formation remain within reach of the drill. In no case would a well deeper than 15,000 ft. be required, and in most cases to no greater depth than 10,000 ft. Recent outstanding success of deeper prospecting in West Texas demonstrates the merits of deeper drilling on known structure. Introduction New fields discoverd during I942 equaled or exceeded the number in any preceding year. The total amount of oil found by these discoveries was less than in any previous year, for which accurate records are available. This means that the pools now being discovered are much smaller than in past years. This is to be expected, since the prospects available during 1942 were largely those overlooked in the earlier years and therefore represent a second or third order (in quality) of structural feature. This failure to find pools of good size and quality raises grave doubt as to the security of our future oil supply. With military needs rising almost daily, and the period of heaviest con- sumption in our war effort still in the future, there is even a growing doubt as to our ability to supply the amount needed for our ultimate victory. This does not mean that our reserves are inadequate, but rather that our "capacity to produce" may be inadequate. Lacking large fields with flush production, our capacity to produce is rapidly approaching our current needs. ,Since the industry is unable to find the large new fields necessary to keep a safe margin of "capacity to produce," other means are needed. It seems obvious that one of these should be deeper prospecting on the large, proven, productive structural features now known. The exploratory wildcat is drilled primarily in search of a trap and the reason for failure to find oil and gas in nine out of ten cases is due to the absence of a suitable trap under the drill site. Therefore, deeper drilling on a known structural feature that is productive largely eliminates the greatest hazard in wildcat drilling. While by no means all the oil known today is found in structural traps—in fact, some have estimated that less than half is so located— the fact remains that structural traps are far more commonly the oil fields that have multiple horizons of production superimposed one over the other. Outstanding examples are the Eldorado field in Kansas, the Tonkawa and Cushing fields in Oklahoma, the Louden and Salem pools of Illinois, and the richest and most prolific of all structural traps, the Long Beach, Ven-tura and other similar fields of California.

Mineral dressing research showed that iron concentrates of commercial quality could be produced from the Pea Ridge deposit near Sullivan, Mo. Magnetic separation and flotation, on a laboratory scale, yielded concentrates ranging from 60.0 to 71.4 pet Fe at recoveries of 89.9 to 97.6 pct. Early in 1957 St. Joseph Lead Co. announced discovery of three new centers of iron ore deposition in east central Missouri.' The discovery resulted from exploratory drilling in the vicinity of a magnetic anomaly or high. A deep hole, drilled into the Pre-Cambrian porphyry to determine the cause of anomaly, penetrated a magnetite-rich deposit.' The magnetic surveys that revealed the anomalies were begun by the Missouri Geological Survey in 1929 and were continued into the 1930's.3 At that time an area in Crawford County known as the Bourbon magnetic high was located. A second anomaly, similar in size and intensity, was discovered about six miles to the northeast in Franklin County in the vicinity of Sullivan. This area was not studied in detail until the early 1940's. To determine the cause of the anomalies, the USBM drilled four holes at the Bourbon site in 1943-1944.4 The most productive hole penetrated four mineralized zones having a total thickness of 127.5 ft. These zones contained magnetite in rhyo-lite porphyry at depths between 1600 and 2000 ft. Additional iron ore below 2000 ft was considered a possibility at the time. Some years later, the USGS, Missouri Geological Survey, St. Joseph Lead Co., and others cooperated in sponsoring an aeromagnetic survey of the Bourbon-Sullivan area which resulted in discovery of a third high, about eight miles distant at Pea Ridge. This deposit, with an estimated reserve of 50 to 100 million tons of iron ore, is considered the main find, although other orebodies in the same general area are of definite interest.' When this discovery was announced, St. Joseph Lead also revealed plans to exploit the deposit jointly with Bethlehem Steel Co. A new corporation, Meramec Mining Co., was established, and 1962 was set as the target date for completing physical plant.2 Annual production goals of 2 million tons of beneficiated and pelletized iron ore were proposed. Preparation of the site for shaft sinking was begun in June 1957. Orebody and Character of Samples: Drilling to date has established the Pea Ridge orebody as a crescent-shaped pipe about 300 ft wide. Some drillholes were bottomed at 2800 ft in very good iron ore.6 he orebody is predominantly magnetite, although hematite and a mixture of hematite and magnetite occur in the upper areas and peripheral walls. Drillhole cores representing ore from different areas and depths of mineralization were grouped into composites for testing. These composites consisted of: 1) medium grade mixed hematite and magnetite, 2) high grade mixed hematite and magnetite, and 3) high grade magnetite. The medium grade ore came from three holes with depths of i350 to 1900 ft. The high grade mixed hematite and magnetite cores came from the 1790 to 2812-ft interval of one hole. Partial chemical analyses of the three samples, given in Table 1, reveal that all are excessively high in phosphorus and sulfur, and sample 1 is

IN reviewing mineral industry education a year ago, occasion was taken to congratulate the Institute in general and to felicitate the Education Di- vision in particular on "the most gratifying growth which is taking place in Institute consciousness in regard to its responsibility for the recruitment and adequate training of student personnel and for the successful bridging of the difficult gap between graduation and achievement of professional status." Continuation of this growth of interest throughout 1939 is a recognition of the validity of the splendid statement of George Otis Smith that the mining students of today are the ore reserve of the Institute for the future. In this connection one recalls the equally apt expression of another distinguished geologist, George M. Fowler, who, speaking of exploration for ore deposits, says, "The place to look for elephants is where elephants have been found."

Results of a field research project on the thermal recovery of oil by movement of a combustion front are presented. This field test was conducted in the South Belridge field, This The war paitern was a Southsing1e 2.5-acre five-spot pattern in the 700-ft deep Tulare sand. Results of this project indicate the technical feasibility of producing high viscosity, low-grallity crude oils by thermal means. It was demonstrated that heavy oils could be moved rapidly over considerable distances by thermal drive, and that high percentage recoveries of oil could be effected. The bulk of the oil recovery came after arrival of the burning front at a production well. However, rapid corrosion and high-temperature failure of conventional pipe and equipment both below and above surface occurred. Stainless steels gave more satisfectory performance under these conditions than did conventional steels. Oxygen was seldom observed in gas from wells ahead of the burning front, and it appears that the front was continuous throughout the life of the experiment. INTRODUCTION During late 1953 and early 1954, industry-wide attention was focused on the thermal recovery of oil by movement of a combustion front through an oil zone. Two separate Oklahoma field tests were described in publications by Kuhn and Koch, and Grant and Szasz. To obtain basic information needed for making engineering and economic appraisals of commercial recovery of heavy oil by this thermal recovery method, a new field research projecta3,4 was started May 31, 1955. Twelve oil companies contributed to this project with General Petroleum Corp. as operator. Since combustion recovery experiments* with heavy oils in other areas had been conducted in small patterns,"' an important purpose of this test was to determine whether the process could be operated in a pattern of near-commercial well spacing. The south Belridge field, located 30 miles north of Taft, Calif., was chosen because its oil sands are similar to many heavy oil sands which typically have low primary recovery and leave a large amount of oil in place. such fields are not particularly suited for common secondary recovery methods. DESCRIPTION OF TEST SITE The test interval was a Tulare sand at a depth of about 700 ft. Nine test wells were drilled, cored and completed from Oct., 1955, through Jan., 1956. The initial pattern shown on the map, Fig. 1, consisted of an injection well (II)', four producing wells (1P-4P), and four observation wells (IT-4T). An old well (81) was also recompleted for use as an observation well. The area enclosed by the original four production wells was 2.5 acres; the distance from the injection well to each production well was 233 ft. During the combustion period, Well 5P was drilled to replace Well 2P, and Well 6P was drilled to replace Well 3P. The new wells were 25 ft beyond the old production wells along a diagonal from the injection well, and resulted in an increase in pattern area to 2.75 acres. Isopachs are shown in Fig. 1. The average thickness of the oil sand in the test pattern was 30 ft. Fig. 2 presents two cross sections through the test pattern. Oil sand is represented by white and claystone by gray. The dashed lines indicate layers of conglomerate grading to claystone. The sand thickness was fairly uniform throughout the test pattern except in the 1P area. The sand body dips gently from the northwest to southeast, about 3 degrees from horizontal. The sand is unconsoli-dated, and grades from very fine material to pebbles as large as 2 in. in diameter. Table 1 presents the average initial properties of the formation. The in-place porosity of 37 per cent was estimated from the porosity of coke-consolidated cores taken after combustion. The distribution and properties of interseam and overburden rocks in coal mines is largely controlled by conditions at the time of their original deposition. Within the developed areas of the Bowen Basin, depositional environments range from fluvial through upper and lower detaic, to marginal marine and intertidal facies. Each environment has a characteristic association of lithologies with specific range of properties, and each lithology has a characteristic geometry. Fragmentation problems are associated with ancient sand channel systems, where the difficulties encountered depend on the dimension and shape of channels, their continuity, orientation to mining face and associated sediment bodies formed as levees or interdistributary muds. Stability problems in spoil, pit floor and highwalls are usually associated with mudstones which contain swelling clays derived from the original Permian volcanic source. This clay problem is aggravated by deep Tertiary weathering. Case studies are presented of detailed analyses and prediction of geomechanical properties on a mine site scale. These are used in investigating or forecasting fragmentation and stability hazards. The studies incorporate detailed field mapping, bore log data and computer data processing. They allow the development of detailed depositional models for specific interseam intervals within mines. As areas of depositional environment are identified they allow the construction of maps of similar mining conditions and the determination of the most suitable mining techniques.

Henry Louis, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England (communication to the Secretary): I think very highly of the novel and ingenious device of Prof. Richards for analyzing the movement of the various elements of the jig; it is a method that certainly seems to promise valuable results, if we could only make certain that these various indicator-appliances have no effect upon the action of the jig. I would like, however, to suggest that in future experiments the connection between the plunger indicator-rod and the pencil should be made by means of parallel motions, so as better to reproduce the rectilinear motion of the piston. I should expect, if this were done, that the " curve " of the plunger in the Harz jig, at any rate, would be represented either by straight lines or else by quite regular curves, according to the method by which the plunger is set in motion; the apparent combinatioil of straight line and curve seems difficult to explain. With respect to the water-curve, I am afraid I am completely at fault, but no doubt Prof. Richards can explain my difficulty. Monotonic tension and controlled cyclic-strain tests have been conducted on an annealed steel at various strain rates and temperatures in the weep range. Evidence of a strain-induced precipitate reaction abozle 500°C was determined from pronounced cyclic-hardening effects, increase inflow stress, inter granular fracture, drastic decrease in low-cycle fatigue resistance, and loss in tensile fracture ductility, as well as through electron-microscopy examination. It was found that strain rate as well as temperature had a pronounced effect on these observations. A parameter of the form P = T(7.95 - log ip) was determined, which was directly related to the ductility, defined either as the true strain at fracture in the case of simple tension, or as 2N 1/2 ? E p in the case of cyclic plastic strain. A highly satisfactory comparison of the cyclic life as measured and as computed from the ductility predicted by this parameter was obtained for a range of temperatures from 400° to 650°C and for crosshead speeds of 0.002 to 0.2 in. per min. MANY metals subjected to sustained loading at elevated temperatures derive resistance to creep from solid-state reactions of various alloying constituents. These reactions can be many and varied, and occur as a consequence of time and temperature according to reaction-rate principles. Strong evidence exists that many of these reactions are influenced by plastic strain, the argument being put forth that dislocations act as sites for nucleation and growth for the new phase.' Many examples can be cited where plastic strain during transformation influences the structure, and as a consequence affects the properties.2 The low-alloy steels serve as particularly good examples for investigating the effect which aging reactions have on resulting properties. Alloying elements such as carbon and nitrogen, and carbide formers such as manganese, chromium, molybdenum, and so forth, can, by the particular aging reaction which occurs, produce strengthening effects at various temperatures, and so endow strength to the alloy over a broad range of temperatures. These effects have been systematically studied by Glen both during creep3 and for constant strain-rate tension testing.4,5 The work of Glen is of considerable interest in connection with the present study, particularly in regard to the effect of various alloying additions on the true stress-strain curve and on fracture ductility at various elevated temperatures. He has shown that strain-age hardening occurred during plastic straining, which was quite specific both to the temperature of the test and to the alloying element involved. When strain-age hardening was noted at a particular temperature, a .minimum in reduction of area was also obtained. Provided the temperature for the minimum reduction of area exceeded 300°C, all minimum ductility fractures were found to be inter-crystalline in nature. For carbon steels containing molybdenum, two minima in reduction of area were noted, one occurring at 200° to 250°C, the precise temperature depending on the percentage of molyb-

In 1936 a description of the plant (Fig 1) and process employed by the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd. for the recovery of zinc from zinc concentrate by the electrolytic process was prepared. † During the twelve years which have elapsed since the preparation of the earlier paper, several major changes in the metallurgy of the process have been introduced. It is the purpose of the present paper to give a general description of these changes and thus to bring up to date the description of the plant and process. Summary The major changes in Risdon practice since 1936 have been: 1. Replacement of two stage roasting by a preliminary roast followed by the flotation of all the leach residue and the roasting of the flotation concentrate. 2. Screening of all calcine fed to the pachucas. 3. Continuous leaching of calcine and improved classification of pachuca discharge. 4. Close control of hydrogen ion concentration during purification for iron removal. 5. Recovery of cobalt as a good grade oxide. 6. Production of part of the zinc output in the form of "four nines" metal (99.99 pct purity). 7. Closer spacing of electrodes thus increasing the potential output of cathode zinc per cell by 50 pct. Changes which are in prospect and for which construction work is proceeding at the present time involve the starting up of: 1. Two suspension roasters. 2. A contact acid plant to produce 150 tons‡ of acid per day and replacing the existing Mills Packard chamber plant. 3. Extra power station capacity to permit greater current flow to existing cell room units. This will increase the output of cathode zinc from about 245 to 290 tons per day. Plans for the future envisage the building of an ammonium sulphate plant, the first unit of which will produce about 50,000 tons per year, and improved treatment of zinc plant residue for the recovery of zinc, lead and other metals. At the end of this paper tables of metallurgical data are presented relating to the year ending June 30, 1948. Details of Changed Practice Output In 1936 the production of cathode zinc amounted to about 200 tons per day. This has since been increased to about 245 tons per day while plant extensions are practically complete which will permit of an output of about 290 tons per day in the near future. Roasting Division ROASTING POLICY A major change has occurred in the roasting policy. Twelve years ago the method in use was to carry out a two stage roast in the first stage of which sulphide sulphur was reduced to about 6 pct. The pre-roast calcine was re-roasted in modified Leggo furnaces using coal as fuel, sulphide sulphur being reduced to about 0.8 pct. The whole procedure was described on pp. 482491 of the earlier paper. Although this roasting procedure had certain advantages it possessed some distinct disadvantages. For instance, it appeared uneconomical to heat up the entire input of pre-roast calcine to roasting temperature by the expenditure of fuel in order to oxidise a few percent of sulphide sulphur. It was argued that if the pre-roast calcine were leached and a process could be developed for the recovery of a zinc sulphide concentrate from the leach residue, this concentrate, small in weight compared with the pre-roost calcine, would probably roast autogenously, thus virtually eliminating the expenditure of fuel as well as greatly increasing the weight of sulphur oxidised per square foot of furnace hearth area. The obvious method of producing a suitable concentrate from leach residue was by flotation. It will be recalled (see p. 495 of the earlier paper) that when two-stage roasting was practised the leach residue was classified, the granular fraction was ground and floated while the slime fraction was thickened, filtered and dried ready for shipment to a lead smelter. This process worked quite successfully. However, when trials were made of leaching a calcine carrying several percent of sulphide sulphur the granular fraction still floated well, but the slime fraction carrying 8-10 pct sulphide sulphur yielded very poor results when subjected to flotation. This fact held up the application of "pre-roast" leaching for many years. The protaxis of the North American continent consists, as is well known, of a large V-shaped area of Archæan rocks, which lie for the most part in the Dominion of Canada, and occupy an area of not less than 2,031,000 square miles. The western limit of this area extends from 'Lake Superior in a northwesterly direction to the Arctic Ocean, the southern is found along the Lower St. Lawrence as far as Labrador. A minor area, spoken of as the Adirondack region of northern New York, has a somewhat broken connection with the main body in a narrow band of igneous rock, which crosses the Upper St. Lawrence where it leaves Lake Ontario. The ancient crystallines are also presumably beneath all the later sediments, hut the above brief description outlines their principal exposures. This great rock-complex consists, for the most part, of a series of gneisses, which present great variations in both structure and composition. In certain sections areas of gneisses of the general composition of granite, and remarkably uniform in character, prevail. They consist largely, if not exclusively, of crystalline rocks in which a banding or foliation has been induced by pressure. These rocks constitute the basal member of the Laurentian system, and by later writers have been referred to as the Ottawa gneiss. In other and quite extended areas, gneisses, regarded by many as composed of altered sediments, are associated with crystalline limestones, quartzites, and much injected igneous matter. To this series the term Grenville has been applied. Based on pole figure data and microstructural observations, the re-crystallization orientation found in a copper strip previously cold-rolled 99.5 pct from a single crystal with an initial (110) [112] orientation may be described as: a 30° rotation, clockwise and counterclockwise, about octahedral poles of the cold-rolled texture such that all four poles function at a low annealing temperature (400°C) and only three of them function at high temperatures (500' to 1050°C). The relative intensity of deformation stresses on various slip planes can be correlated with the choice of poles affecting the rotations found in the recrystallized orientations. ROTATIONAL reorientation about the poles of densely packed crystallographic planes is an important characteristic of secondary recrystallization" in face-centered cubic metals. Some evidence has also been interpreted to show that such a rotational relationship also exists in the primary recrys-tallization process." In an investigation of the crystallographic relationships in the recrystallization process, several aspects of the experimental procedure should be considered. With cold-rolled poly-crystalline metal as the initial material, pole figure analysis leaves many ambiguities as to whether or not simple indices can be assigned to adequately represent its orientation. The rolling texture does not consist of a single texture. Minor deformation textures are usually present. In all cases, twin textures are present. The presence of both minor and twin deformation textures influences the recrystallization texture. In order to study the recrystallization mechanism, a more precise knowledge of the history of the material before recrystallization is necessary. Tensile deformation of a single crystal usually produces residual stresses which are concentrated at slip bands. Since the exact nature and orientation of these potential nuclei sites cannot be experimentally evaluated, the tensile deformation of a single crystal was not considered adequate. From the work done by Barrett and Steadman6 n copper, it appeared that cold rolling of a single-crystal specimen with an initial (110) [112] orientation would yield a specimen which fulfills the conditions required for the present investigation, namely a highly preferred single rolling texture with relatively homogeneous stress distribution. By investigating the recrystallization texture of this material, additional details of reorientation during recrystallization might be obtained. The purpose of this paper is to describe such an investigation. Experimental Procedure Copper used in the present investigation was cathode sheet with a purity of 99.94 to 99.97 pct. A copper single-crystal specimen, 1.15x0.8720x0.5322 in. (thickness) was cut from a cylindrical crystal which was grown in a Bridgman furnace.' The cutting was accomplished on a horizontal milling machine operated at a very slow speed to obtain a (110) plane in the rolling plane and a [112] direction in the rolling direction. The disturbed surface was removed by electrolytic polishing in dilute orthophos-phoric acid (H3PO4) with a specific gravity of 1.14, and a current density of about 1 to 2 amp per sq cm. A 3-min polishing was needed to eliminate the disturbed surface causing Debye-Scherrer rings and a 45-min polish produced a surface which yielded sharp rounded Laue spots. It was estimated that about 1/16 in. of metal was removed from the original cut surface. The final orientation of this specimen before rolling was about 2" from the (110) plane in the rolling plane with a [112] direction aligned in the rolling direction. It is possible that a small amount of strain was still present in the cube despite the fact that the Laue spots seemed very sharp. It is doubtful, however, that this would be an important factor after a subsequent rolling reduction of 99.5 pct. This copper specimen was rolled on a laboratory rolling mill with two highly polished rolls 37/8 in. in diam in the following manner: 0.010 in. per pass to 50 pct reduction, 0.005 in. to 70 pct, 0.002 in. to 85 pct and, finally, 0.001 in. per pass to a 99.5 pct reduction. The interest of the Federal Government in improvement of waterways dates from 1820, when Congress appropriated $5000 for making a survey of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers and assigned this work to the Corps of Engineers of the Army. Since that time the Government has gradually assumed increasing jurisdiction in the matter of improvement and control of inland waterways until, by the River and Harbor Act of Jan. 21, 1927, Congress assigned to the Secretary of War and to the Chief of Engineers the duly of making surveys, in accordance with House Document No. 308, 69th Congress, to formulate plans for the most effective improvement of the navigable streams of the United States and their tributaries, for navigation, development of water power, control of floods, and the needs of irrigation. Virtually all the preliminary investigations and surveys required by this act have been completed. The reports made to Congress have been published and often are referred to as ''308 Reports." The map shown in Fig. 1 is merely a skeleton distribution of the projects covered by these reports, but it serves to indicate the magnitude of the proposed undertaking. In many instances, a single character on the map stands for a major development involving several dams and reservoirs or many miles of canals or levees. The devastating floods of 1936, and the need for worthy public works to take up the slack in employment, gave further impetus to this program and in 1936 led to the enactment of a bill authorizing a large number of these projects. The National Flood Control Act of 1936 specifically authorizes some 270 flood-control projects in 31 states, and affecting nearly every state in the Union, with an estimated construction cost of about $300,000,000. In addition, the 1936 Act directs the Secretary of War to make preliminary examinations and surveys for flood control in some 230 additional localities, and to continue surveys and studies of 18 reservoir sites. Three examples of open pits where toppling failure controls the stability and design of the slopes are described. Two examples involve the design of overall slopes in base metal mines. The third example concerns the analysis and design of remedial measures to prevent toppling failure from occurring in a critical slope in a coal mine. The analytical techniques for assessing toppling failure on a rational basis are discussed for the three examples. This includes an assessment of the important parameters which govern the stability for the toppling failure mode. The geological setting and input data for each example are described, as are the important external or limiting factors pertinent to the sites in question. A statistical cumulative technique was used to assess one of the most important input parameters in the two examples involving overall slope design. Both deep-seated toppling failures, involving the entire slope, and shallow bench failures are considered. Results of the stability analyses and their related engineering significance with regard to slope stability and design are discussed. A sensitivity analysis of various parameters is effectively utilized. Design charts are developed and evaluated accordingly. In the example where toppling failure was unavoidable, the rationale for design of stabilization techniques to prevent toppling is discussed.

Introduction The procedures used to design slopes in rock have only been developed over the past 10 years. Therefore, continued review and assessment of field experience by the publication of case studies is necessary to determine the accuracy of the theory and the application of the design techniques being used. Where failures have occurred, mine management should insist that the slides be 'back analyzed' to determine the shear strength parameters at failure. These values should be used for any pit design as they reflect site conditions more accurately than any other procedure. The previous papers have dealt with the basic concepts and factors that influence stability. To illustrate the application of these concepts in the study of practical stability problems, six ease studies have been selected for review. The examples include failure of tailings dams due to an earthquake, failure and redesign of a slope in overburden, review of failures of rock slopes, calculation of the amount of seepage into a pit and influence of the groundwater on stability, and the design of slopes for a proposed 2,500 ft. deep open pit mine. All but the first example are drawn from the authors personal experience. EXAMPLE 1 Failure of Tailings Dams Due to an Earthquake On March 28. 1965 a serious earthquake occurred in Chile with the epicenter located near the town of La Liqua, about 80 miles north of Santiago. The earthquake had a rating of 7 to 7.25 on the Richter scale. A record of the acceleration was taken at Santiago where a maximum horizontal acceleration of 0.18 g. was recorded. Many small mines are located in this region. Each of the mines provided impoundment storage for tailings with one to three dykes. As a result of the earthquake, most of the dams failed. The most serious failure involved two dams at El Cobre where more than 2,700,000 cu. yd. of tailings flowed into the valley, travelled over 7 miles in a few minutes, destroyed part of the town of El Cobre and killed more than 200 people. The Chilean government commissioned an investigation into the failures. A summary of the findings was published by Dobry and Alvare7 in 1967 (1).
