Tars paper describes briefly the topography and geology of the region where the mica-bearing pegmatites are found and discusses prospecting, the quality of the mica, its preparation, and evaluation of the deposits. Muscovite mica occurs in a number of widely separated localities in Brazil, but production has come largely from deposits in the southeastern and eastern part of the State of Minas Gerais (Fig. I). There the deposits form a discontinuous zone, which starts at a point 90 km. north of the city of Rio de Janeiro and extends north for some 500 km., roughly parallel to the coast. A maximum width of 180 km. is reached along the Rio Doce. To the west in Minas Gerais, and extending east into the states of Espirito Santo and Rio de Janeiro, the mica zone proper is fringed by areas in which there are scattered occurrences of mica-bearing pegmatites. A few of these outlying deposits have produced commercial mica, but most of them are unimportant. To the southwest, in the State of São Paulo, there are a number of mines, which at one time produced a very considerable amount of sheet mica, largely as a by-product of kaolin mining. These deposits, and, a few others lying between them and the main productive areas to the northeast, appear to be the southwestern continuation of the strong Minas Gerais mica zone. In the vicinity of Conquista, just north of the Minas Gerais boundary in the State of Bahia, and still farther north, near Jacobina, there are several known mica deposits. Their location indicates that they may be the northern continuation of the main mica zone. The major part of Brazilian mica production has come from four areas within the mica zone proper; from north to south, Governador Valadares, Raul Soares, Espera Feliz, and Muriaé. The first is 190 km. from north to south and reaches a maximum width of 180 km. The Raul Soares area extends 135 km. from northeast to southwest, and in places is 80 km. wide. The Espera Feliz area is 100 km. from north to south, and reaches a width of 35 km. The Muriaé area extends 150 km. from northeast to southwest and its width reaches 40 kilometers. Between the known productive areas, and in the areas directly to the southwest and to the north of them, little mica has been produced. These gaps, as well as certain irregularities in the outline of the mica zone itself, are to be ascribed either to lack of prospecting or to conditions preventing the discovery of mica, rather than to its nonexistence. AN excerpt from the Alabama State Mining Law, pertaining to, transporting men' into and out of the mines, reads as follows: "A trip of empty cars may be operated for the purpose of taking employees into and out of the mine, where the distance to and from their work exceeds one mile." The State Mining Department of Alabama includes in its inspection the transportation of men into and out of the mines, also studying and noting improvements, or progress made, that would tend to create a greater assurance of safety in this practice. Everyone is familiar with the original safety methods employed in man-trip transportation, such as passing a rope around the trip of cars, or through the cars, fastened in the conventional manner, and with the usual "clog," commonly called a drag, on the rear end. Also there is a more advanced method of transporting men, such as the double-rope system, which is feasible on slopes used exclusively for this purpose, and is very satisfactory. THROUGHOUT northeastern Texas we have an extensive series of iron-ore deposits, occupying portions of nineteen counties and having approximately an actual ore-covered area of 1000 square miles. The existence of these ores has long been known. Kennedy* says: "Iron-ore is distributed in profusion throughout Texas, being found almost everywhere except in the level region of the coast." Before this, C. Newell† had mentioned the existence of these ores thus: " Iron is found in abundance in the eastern, northern and middle portions of Texas;" and in 1849 Edward Smith‡ said: " We met with immense hills of iron which were said to be, and appeared to be, of excellent quality, in Cass and Titus counties.. . .. It is well known that Texas abounds with iron of first-rate quality." In 1859, Dr. Shumard? reports that detailed surveys had been made in several counties, and says: " Our labors have demonstrated the important fact that we have a vast iron-region in the eastern part of the state, embracing considerable areas in Cass, Harrison, Rusk, Panola, Smith, San Augustine and Shelby counties. The ore-deposits belong to the Tertiary era and consist chiefly of hematites and limonites, of which there are several varieties. We have also found in this district extensive beds of carbonate of iron." Dr. Shumard gives no very exaggerated description of Cass county§ as it then existed when he says : " Cass county alone is capable of supplying a number of furnaces with an abundance of excellent iron-ore for many years." THE Cartersville barite district is near Cartersville, Ga., in the southeastern part of Bartow County, about 43 miles northeast of Atlanta. The area over which active mining is being done extends about six miles in a northeasterly direction and is about three miles wide. Barite production in Georgia began about 1907,1but the existence of the mineral was known much earlier. At present four companies are operating washing plants and three other plants are operating on leases from those companies. The chief impurities in the ores are silica and iron oxide. The silica is easily washed and jigged out and gives little trouble. Any gravity separation between the iron and the barite is generally poor, owing to the slight difference in specific gravity. Two operators have turned to magnetic separation as the solution to the problem and have made remarkable improvements in the finished product. By very close sizing prior to jigging, the separation between iron and barite has been greatly improved. In some localities manganese occasionally appears as an impurity, but is fairly easy to eliminate by gravity methods. A considerable percentage of iron and silica is eliminated by being broken free in crushing. Until methods for the recovery of fine ore were introduced a minimum of crushing was done, but modern methods allow more than formerly. The depression years brought about the need for increased recovery of ore handled on the part of the producers and a demand for a higher grade of product on the part of the buyers. Improvements in milling and mining practice have had a far greater effect, however, than merely the production of a better grade of ore with greater recovery. They have opened for mining large areas that a few years ago were considered noncommercial deposits because of their inaccessibility and their high iron content. It is no exaggeration to say that the new methods have more than doubled present known reserves of barite ore of economic value.

While brass and other copper alloys have long been listed as offering health hazards to their workers, it is questionable if the metals involved are alone responsible for the trades' records of morbidity. The entire science of foundry sanitation is the product of the past two decades; and the best standards now operative would have been regarded as little short of revolutionary prior to 1910. The special handicap to the conservation of the health of the brass founder's employees has been the fact that, unlike the iron founder, his business could be profitably carried on in almost any small and unsanitary quarters. As a result, writers on occupational disease have accepted brass chills or brass founders' ague as an inevitable feature of the trade; and respiratory disabilities, as well as phthisis and disturbances of the nervous system, are also included as prevalent among those employed. While there can be no question as to the basic accuracy of past investigations, there is every reason to doubt the necessity for an undue percentage of ill health among brass molders and casters who are safeguarded by scientific ventilating standards and by improving personal habits of sobriety. There is, however, need for a campaign of education as to the most approved practices and equipment whereby the employer may safeguard the health of his workers, and thereby reduce his labor turnover and increase his productive efficiency. Broadly speaking, copper, tin, and aluminum carry negligible health hazards. The toxic qualities of lead, however, are a menace; especially if scrap lead is recovered or bought for foundry processes. The rapid volatilization of zinc renders its fumes and flocculent condensation the chief problems in conserving the health of the brass worker. DUring experimental study on the separation of a zinc concentrate from the heavy sulfide ores of Jerome, Ariz., a great deal of attention has been given to proper activation of the sphalerite content of the ore. The sphalerite at Jerome contains enough iron to class it as a marmatite, as picked specimens have only about 60 per cent. zinc, whereas pure zinc sulfide contains 67 per cent. zinc. This marmatite in large pieces is black in color, but in dry powdered state is brown. A flotation froth made from it has a silvery black luster in comparison with a brassy luster caused by chalcopyrite which occurs in the same ores. The sample used in most of the experiments described below consisted of about 3000 Ib. of diamond-drill core from the zinc-bearing orebodies of the United Verde mine, and had the following analysis: Per Cent. Most of the Jerome ores are so intimately crystallized that reasonably complete unlocking by grinding does not take place until 800 mesh is approached. Therefore, the 200-mesh grind adopted contains a considerable amount of locked mineral grains, but not so much as to render impossible the preparation of commercial grades of concentrate.

A graphical method of analyzing the data obtained from shallow earth-resistivity depth tests is presented. The method is based upon empirical results and has no theoretical basis. The usual apparent resistivity-electrode spacing curve is used together with a cumulative resistivity-electrode spacing curve plotted on the same sheet. The greatly reduced scale required for plotting the cumulative values of resistivity together with the effect of the summation of the individual resistivity values serves to minimize the effect of purely local surface anomalies and inadvertent errors of measurement. The point of intersection of tangents or straight lines drawn to intersect at zones of maximum curvature in the cumulative curve indicates the depth to the underlying material. Numerous figures are presented in which data from published reports and from recent field studies are analyzed and the results compared with actual depths established by borings or with depth values obtained by the use of theoretical methods of analysis. Smoothly rounded curves of apparent resistivity such as are often obtained in the field, and which have been a serious drawback to attempts to analyze the data empirically heretofore, appear to be susceptible to rather accurate analysis by the method described. The method is best suited to analyses involving shallow two-layer formations. It has been applied successfully, however, in analyzing the data obtained from tests made over shallow three-layer formations. As with most empirical methods, its chief advantage is its simplicity and ease of application. There have been published many papers that discuss the interpretation of data obtained from earth-resistivity tests when using the four-terminal method of electrode spacing developed by Wenner.' The majority of these have dealt with theoretical analyses for two-layer and three-layer formations. Some sets of "master curves" have been presented for use in analyzing field data to determine the depth to the first and possibly the second horizon below the earth's surface. Although practically all of these theoretical methods of analysis have appeared to have particular merit and some have been used successfully in practice, they have been found to be of little value where the local conditions surrounding the test failed to conform to those assumed in the theory. In certain fields, particularly in civil engineering, relatively shallow explorations are often involved and geophysical methods of test must compete with the direct methods of exploration ordinarily used. Only when it can be demonstrated that geophysical methods of test can materially reduce the time and cost of a given exploration project will the civil engineer abandon direct methods in favor of the interpretations of geophysical exploration data. Empirical methods of analyzing earth-resistivity data have been used in many instances in the past. The experimental work on the oxidized copper ore at the New Cornelia mine at Ajo, Ariz., ended on Jan. 12, 1916. On that date final decision was made on the general nature of the process to be used in the 5,000-ton leaching plant, and on many of the details, as far as experience on a 40-ton scale could decide them. With the approval of the Board of Directors and the General Manager, John C. Greenway, we have compiled what seem to be the most interesting data on the results obtained during the experimental period. The most important part of the data resulted from the operation of a 1-ton and a 40-ton plant at Ajo. Experimental work on Cornelia oxidized ore dates back to April, 1912, and has been going on nearly continuously since that time. A good many variations from the original idea have been tried, but the process finally decided upon is in principle and in all of its details a simple one. The history of the leaching work on this ore has been brought down to about a year ago in papers presented to this Institute by Stuart Croasdalel and Dr. L. D. Ricketts.2 The present paper will, therefore, deal principally with the results obtained during the last year of the work. Preliminary Tests by Mb. Croasdale Preliminary tests were begun by Stuart Croasdale in July, 1912. A number of important points were definitely decided by his work. Among these were: 1. New Cornelia oxidized ore, not very finely crushed (to about 2-to 3-mesh) showed good extraction with 5 per cent. sulphuric acid. It appeared that better than 80 per cent. extraction could be expected. 2. The consumption of acid for this extraction was not prohibitive. It was apparently 3.5 to 4 1b. gross per pound of copper recovered.

Magnesite both Massive and Crystalline MAGNESITES are. of two general classes-massive and crystalline. Massive magnesite occurs in serpentine, being formed by the breaking down or decay of serpentine-making minerals or rocks as olivine, etc. (All the magnesia contained by the olivine is not liberated, as a portion goes to make up the serpentine; the breaking up of this serpentine later forms more magnesite.) Serpentine in various stages of transformation is found in the vicinity of magnesite deposits. Massive magnesite is very widely distributed. It is found in Greece, . California, Africa, India, Australia, Mexico, South America, and deposits of varying sizes occur in several of the European countries. Those on the Island of Euboea, Greece, are probable the most important deposits of this character of magnesite. They have been worked for a number of years, the principal quarries or mines being 3 miles in the interior from the village of St. George. (St. George is on the west coast of the island, between the towns of Limni and Khalkis.) (Figs. 1 and 2). -The magnesite occurs in veins or lenses in serpentine. Some of these lenses are very large; one worked several years ago was approximately, 50 ft. in thickness, 75 to 100 ft. high and 300 ft. or more in length. The magnesite is pure white and makes a very prominent feature of the landscape. While massive magnesite is widely scattered over the world, many of the deposits are in veins too thin to work. The usual mode of occurrence is in the form of stock work, the deposits in Venezuela, Mexico, and many of those in California, being of this form. The veins vary in thickness from the thinness of paper up to several inches, running in all directions, occasionally leading to a mass or nucleus of some,size. The spaces between the veins are filled with a disintegrated serpentine in the form of sand. Several of the deposits in California would probably be workable, if they were more favorably situated with reference to transportation, but by far the majority of the deposits are too poor to work. The effects of magnesium-rich surface layers of varying thickness on the mechanical properties of LiF have been studied. The yield stress, critical tensile stress, and work-hardening slope increase linearly with layer thickness, while the strain to fracture decreases yapidly with increasing layev thickness. The results of tension tests, supplemente!d by metallogvaphic evidence, indicate that the yield stress and the critical tensile stress of LiF are not determined by surface-source operation. DESPITE many studies, which have recently been reviewed,' certain fundamental aspects of the plasticity of LiF remain obscure. For instance, one question still awaiting a satisfactory resolution is: does the nucleation and/or multiplication of dislocations in LiF occur preferentially near the crystal surface? It is now well-known that mobile dislocation half-loops are readily introduced into LiF by surface damage and that the mechanical properties of LiF are affected by such surface damage. However, it is not known whether, in the absence of large numbers of artificially introduced surface sources, dislocations arise more easily near the crystal surface than in the crystal interior. It is also not known to what extent existing mobile dislocations multiply preferentially near the crystal surface. The present work is an experimental study of these matters. A short investigation of the effect of magnesium -alloyed surface layers on the deformation of LiF single crystals has been published by Westwood.~ Some relevant conclusions drawn from this research are restated here for purposes of comparison with the present work. 1) Tests on as-cleaved, chemically polished, coated and uncoated specimens show that a coating can restrict the operation of artificially introduced surface sources, thereby raising the yield stress. A coating also decreases the initial rate of work hardening of as-cleaved LiF crystals by reducing the number of active dislocation sources, so that mutual dislocation interference effects are lessened. 2) A catastrophic breakthrough of groups of edge dislocations piled up against the coating can cause stress drops in the stress-strain curve. 3) A surface coating can act as a stable barrier to the egress of dislocations, causing pile-up,

Of primary importance in mine-installations is the hoist, which has a very direct bearing on the successful operation of a mine. Conditions vary greatly with different mines, and especially in different localities. Such factors as depth, incline, the number of levels, permissible or desirable speeds, conditions of ore, etc., are always more or less special in each case. Veins of ore are never exactly duplicated, and the nature of the ground through which shafts are sunk may considerably modify permissible values. As mining-laws are made by the different States, they necessarily vary somewhat, and, even when not fully observed, they introduce factors which qualify the conditions of hoisting men and ore. The amount of timbering required is often of importance as relating to hoisting-conditions. Methods of loading ore affect the time required, as also does the question of the use of cars or skips. Safety-precautions must be very carefully considered, and the number of men in each mine, the number of compartments, and often the method of removing water from the mine, must have careful consideration. While a general discussion of the subject of hoisting is possible, most cases are entirely special, and can be considered only in connection with the peculiar conditions pertaining to that particular installation. The cost of installation of the hoisting-plant may be an appreciable amount, while the cost of raising the ore may be but a small part of the total operating-charge. In many cases, however, the output of the mine is limited by the capacity or the hoist, and the latter thus becomes of the first importance.

PURE gypsum may be broken down into its constituents as follows: [ ] Standard specifications (ASTM Designation C22-25) state that a material shall not be considered gypsum if it contains less than 64.5 pct by weight of CaS042H2O. Anhydrite, the second calcium sulphate mineral found in nature, may be broken into its constituents as follows: [ ] PROPERTIES OF GYPSUM AND ANHYDRITE Pure gypsum is colorless to white but various impurities change its color to shades of gray, brown, red, or pink. It has a hardness of 2 in the Mohs scale and can be scratched with the fingernail. The specific gravity of pure gypsum is 2.3 to 2.4, so that rock gypsum, free from moisture, weighs about 145 lb per cu ft. The process of' spheroidization, or more properly coarsening, of Al-CuAl,eutectic alloy specimens with various initial microstructures was studied by quantitative metallographic and X-ray diffraction techniques. By measuring the rale at which specimens with a very fine dispersion of phases (produced by quenching molten droplets of the alloy in water) coarsened it uias determined that the rate-controlling mechanism for coarsening was diffusion, probably of aluminum in the aluminum-rich phase. The lamellae in specimens with a high degree of microstructural and cr-ystallog/uphic anisotropy (produced hy unidirectional solidification of ingots) thickened during heat treatment by recession of the CuAl, platelets from jaulted regzons, yet the specinlens retained a very high degree of. anisotropy after prolonged heat treatments at a temperature within 8°C of the eutectic temperature. In such specimens the crystallographic orientation relationship between the phases remained constant and no change in the crystallographic substructure occurred. Based on these observations a model was developed for the coarsening—or rate of' thicken-ing—oj- the lamellar structures which predicts that the rate of decrease of interface area is proportional to the square of lamellar interface area. Experiments with degenerate and very coarse lamellar microstruc -tures preduced by extremely slow unidirectional solidification) indicate that initial microstructure is a most important factor governing the final micro-structure after heat treatment. The particle size and shape of dispersed phases are important parameters affecting the properties of a wide variety of two-phase materials. As is well-known, varietythe dispersed-phase particles tend to coarsen at appropriately high temperatures because the interface energy of the system is reduced by the concomitant reduction in interface area. Nepheline syenite is a silica deficient crystal-line rock consisting of albite and microcline feldspars and nepheline, together with varying but small amounts of mafic silicates and other accessory minerals. Nepheline-bearing rocks are widely distributed around the world but only in Canada, Norway, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and the United States are deposits worked commercially, Because of its low melting point and fluxing ability, nepheline syenite was investigated in the early 1900s by many students of glass and ceramics. Although the nepheline syenite deposits in Methuen Township, Ont., Canada, were discovered as early as 1897 it wasn't until 1935 that the first mill was erected to produce nepheline syenite products. In Canada, nepheline syenite deposits are worked by Indusmin Ltd. and International Minerals and Chemical Corp. (Canada) Ltd. who have combined production capacity in excess of 1800 stpd. Between 1935 and 1972 seven million tons valued at $78 million were produced from the Methuen Township deposits. In Norway, the Norsk Nefelin Div. of Elkem Spigerverket has produced nepheline syenite from a deposit on Stjernöy Island in western Finland since early 1960. Production has increased from 8 kt in 1961 to over 200 kt in 1980. Nepheline syenite has been under investigation in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) since at least 1928. In 1951 the first commercial alumina works was brought on stream at Volkhov, near Leningrad, utilizing nepheline concentrates from the Kola peninsula as mill feed. Since then two others have been completed and more are planned. Large quantities of portland cement, sodium carbonate, and potassium carbonate are produced in conjunction with the alumina. A material called nepheline syenite, but actually a pulaskite, is produced in Pulaski County, Arkansas, by the McGeorge Construction Co. for construction aggregates and by the 3M Co. for roofing granules. The Dome Fill Co. purchases the fines and uses them in the preparation of enclosed construction fill. Production is over 2,000,000 stpy. Chap. 16 on "Feldspar, Nepheline Syenite, and Aplite" in the 3rd ed. of Industrial Minerals and Rocks (Castle and Gillson, 1960) and Nepheline Syenite Deposits of Southern Ontario (Hewitt, 1960) contain excellent accounts of earlier commercial development of nepheline syenite as a glass and ceramic material. As in the 4th ed., this chapter deals mostly with the period since 1960 and with matters not previously reported in detail. An English monograph on Nepheline-Syenite and Phonolite (Allen et al., 1968) is a complete survey, at the time, of nepheline syenite which, with its very complete list of references, is an excellent source book. End Uses Nepheline syenite from the Canadian and Norwegian producers finds use primarily in the manufacture of glass and ceramics. One producer also makes several grades of nephellne syenite that are useful as extender pigments and fillers in paint, plastics, and rubber. In the Soviet Union nepheline is used in increasing quantities in the manufacture of alumina, alkali carbonates, and portland cement and to a lesser degree it is used in the manufacture of colored container glass.

This study investigates whether oxygen consumption during segregated forward combustion may be affected by natural convection. Linear theory indicates that thermal instability occurs in a horizontal porous medium when the modified Rayleigh number N 'Ra exceeds a critical value of about 40. Most experimental results, including those described here, indicate this value to be about an order of magnitude smaller. N ', is derived from "differential similarity" and the proper time scale factor is also obtained. The critical value of N'ra for a horizontal, water-saturated porous medium at atmospheric pressure subjected to a uertical temperature gradient was found to be about 3.0. The ambiguity in the value of N'R, arising when fluid properties cannot be assumed constant is indicated. Natural convection was observed for oblique systems below N 'Ra , while simultaneous horizontal flow did not affect N Racrit. The expected range of values for the various parameters pertaining to segregated forward combustion is indicated and the corresponding values of N 'Ra calculated. Only under very favorable conditions, such as high permeability, high pressure and low top temperature, can the critical value of N 'R, be exceeded. Thickness of the convection layer should not become too large, since the time required to obtain significant mixing is proportional to the square of the thickness. For an oblique combustion frant the conditions for significant mixing may be less strenuous. LNTRODUCTION Laboratory1,2 and field314 experiments have shown that a markedly upgraded oil can be produced by in situ forward combustion. Under certain conditions injected air may move through a high permeability, gas-saturated channel over the oil-saturated layer, while combustion takes place, exclusively, at the horizontal interface (Fig. 1). Such a channel may be a natural gas cap, or it may result from a forward combustion process in which injected air and combustion gases fingered through the top of the formation, causing a premature breakthrough at the production well. In this particular case of segregated forward combustion, the air stream moves parallel to the combustion front. Molecular diffusion and transverse mechanical dispersion will be insufficient to cause all the oxygen in the air stream to reach the combustion front. When the oxygen in the air stream is not completely consumed in the combustion process, it will reach the production well and create a serious fire hazard. In addition, the reduced efficiency may make the process economically unprofitable while also serious corrosion problems may be experienced in the production we11.3 This undesirable situation should, therefore, be prevented. However, in a situation as depicted in Fig. 1, an unstable temperature gradient exists in the gas phase. The combustion is taking place at the lower boundary at a nearly constant temperature that may be anywhere from 600 to 1,200F, depending on the conditions. The upper boundary of the gas phase is overlying, impermeable rock; its temperature might be around 100F, but may increase to 300F or higher due to conduction and convection as the combustion process continues. This represents a steep temperature gradient and it is conceivable that under those conditions free or natural convection will take place in the gas

The art of drilling tunnels is still in its infancy, although it is 70 years since the first tunnel driver was put into operation. (It was used to drive 6000 ft of tunnel under the English Channel.) But during the next 60 years neither government agencies nor private enterprise could find much of a future in tunnel drivers. It was difficult to justify the heavy investments, labor was opposed to the machines, and there had been some spectacular failures. In the last ten years, however, there have been changes. Tunnel drivers are being tried with increasing frequency-in spite of the fact that a large number of them have had to be abandoned on site.

Coal is defined as a combustible rock that originated in the accumulation and physical and chemical alteration of vegetation. Coal can be ignited and burned like the wood that was man's earliest fuel, but coal gives more heat than the same amount of wood and has many industrial uses. Unlike wood, coal is not generally found on the surface of the ground but is mined from the solid rock of the earth. Before taking up the occurrence, formation, and the unique character of coal in the rock sequence, let us briefly consider the general character of all rocks in the crust of the earth. Relatively little is known about the very earliest history of the earth, although a number of logical theories have been developed. Manned exploration of the moon and the rocks returned to earth continue to provide some answers to questions concerning the earth's origin and history. The period of earth history with which we concern ourselves here begins after great areas of water had evolved on earth and substantial land areas of once molten (igneous) rock existed. Weathering and other processes that attacked the surface of the rocks reduced them to small particles. Water provided by rainfall transported this material, ultimately, to large bodies of water where it was deposited. Thus was initiated the geologic sequence of sedimentary rocks that lie above the once molten igneous rocks. The crust and upper mantle of the earth are made up of several large plates along which differential movement (primarily horizontal) takes place. Such movements, although small, are occurring today. These horizontal movements are accompanied by vertical movements causing important changes in the relative position of the continents and oceans. Usittg a sectioning technique with Agl10 as the tracer, the diffusion of silver in silver-excess (45.8 at. pct Mg), near-stoichiometric (49.8 at. pct Mg), and magnesium-excess (52.0 at. pct Mg) cylinders of CsCl-type AgMg was determined from 500" to 700°C. Diffusion coefficients conform to the expression D = Do exp (-q/RT) where the respective Do values are 1.53, 0.280, and 0.134 sq cm sec-I and the Q values are 41.3, 40.6, and 38.0 kcal g-atom-'. Lnttice-parameter and density measurements were performed on a more numerous assortment and wider range of compositions. Substitutional defects were found on both sides of stoichiometry. Activation energies for other rate processes in these alloys show related trends with changing composition, although silver may not be the rate-detemining species. KNOWLEDGE of diffusion coefficients is necessary for a quantitative understanding of the many rate processes (e.g., grain growth, precipitation, sintering, oxidation, or mechanical deformation) occurring in solids. Although these data are available for most metals and common alloys, they are quite limited for intermetallic compounds—a group of materials whose unique physical and mechanical properties are presently attracting great interest. From a fundamental viewpoint, diffusion in intermetallic compounds also offers several engaging aspects owing to: their ordering, the possibility of introducing large, stable concentrations of lattice defects, and the variety of bonding types and crystal structures which can be found. In the case of CsC1-type compounds, some previous work has been directed at examining the role of vacancy defects by changing their concentration compositionally. The diffusion of Co60 was measured in 0 NiAl1- and in P COA., Except for the results of Smoluchowski and Burgess, isothermal diffusion coefficients were found to pass through a minimum at the stoichiometric composi- they decreased sharply on what was reported by Bradley and co-wrkers' to be the vacancy-rich (aluminum excess) side of stoichiometry. This investigation of the diffusion of Agl110 in AgMg was undertaken both as an adjunct to a concurrent study of its deformation behavior and for the purpose of obtaining information on the influence of lattice defects and temperature on diffusion in another CsC1-type intermetallic compound. Bcc AgMg remains ordered up to and melts congruently at 820°C. Solubility limits at 300°C are about 41 at. pct Mg and 53 at. pct Mg. It is one of the Hume-Rothery electron compounds with a 3/2 electron-atom ratio. Previous investigations of its properties include hardress,' tenile,'-' electrical reistivity, and thermodyna-mic1',14 studies. Indications of a high bonding strength may be found in the large heat of mixing1' and in the 6-pct vol contraction on compound formaticp, as calculated using atomic radii of l.40 and l.55a for Ag and Mg. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys were prepared by the induction melting of selected fine silver (99.95) and low-iron magnesium (99.95) in magnesia crucibles under 1 atm of A. Supplied by the Handy and Harmon and Dow Chemical Cos., respectivelv. Melts were poured under argon into graphite molds providing 1 1/8-in.-diarn. by 4-in.-long ingots. These were homogenized in evacuated and argon-filled fused-silica capsules by heating for 16 hr at 750'. Three 1 in.-diam. by 3/4-in.-long cylinders were machined from the mid-portion of each ingot for diffusion measurements. Three alloys, analyzing 45.8, 49.8, and 52.0 at. pct Mg were taken as representing the extremes of interest, with 49.8 at. pct Mg being very close to the stoichiometric composition of 50.0 at. pct Mg.

13.7-1. General. Iron ore mining in western Europe is mostly carried out underground and only a minor part is mined by open pit methods. Actual open pits of importance in this connection are, among others, Svappavaara in Sweden, Mo i Rana and Sydvaranger in Norway, Corby Mines, Colsterworth, and Scunthorpe in Great Britain, and in western Africa, Nimba and Bong Range in Liberia, and Kedia d’Idjil in Mauritania. The open pit mines of western Africa are of great interest in this connection as they are designed according to European practice and have accepted the same techniques, methods, equipment, etc. as the European mines. In the surface mining of limestone, granite, shale, etc., the technical conditions generally are similar with those in the iron ore mines. Some information will therefore be submitted from typical quarries. The geological conditions at the various iron ore mines and limestone and other quarries vary extensively. In Scandinavia the iron ores occur exclusively in Precambrian rocks. The ore is hard, mostly magnetite or hematite, folded and steep dipping, and hence accessible to surface mining only in the shallow sections. In the mines referred to, open pit mining will last for another 10 to 30 years, whereupon mining has to be continued by underground methods. In France the Minette iron ore has previously been mined in open pits but, because of increased overburden, mining underground with room and pillar methods now dominates. The iron ores are Jurassic, flatlying strata of oolitic type, containing chamosite, siderite, and brown hematite. The British iron ores are mostly of the same origin and appearance as the French deposits, but despite heavy overburden they are preferably mined from the surface. In western Africa, the iron ores are of the same type as in Brazil, i.e., itabirites with high-grade portions resulting from silica-leaching and weathering. The ore contains mostly brown and blue hematite and magnetite. Nimba and Kedia d’Idjil are very similar regarding ore quality and geology. Bong Range is a deposit of low-grade ore which has to be concentrated.
