It has been necessary to collate the available data on the solubility of graphite in Fe-Si-Mn alloys for a study of slag-metal equilibria in ferromanganese production. That study will be reported later; the collation is reported here. The carbon content of graphite-saturated liquid iron above 1153ºC by Chipman and co-workers1 is: %C= 1.34 + 2.54 x 10~3t(°C) [l] For graphite-saturated manganese above 1322ºC it is: %C = 2.68 + 3.52 x 1CT3 t(°C) [2]

The nature of silicon growths which form on amorphous silicon dioxide during epitaxial deposition in unmasked areas was investigated. Octahedral silicon crystals nucleate and grow on the oxide at pinholes, adjacent to foreign matter, and probably at oxygen-deficient sites. Generation of these oxygen-deficient sites on the oxide surface is shown to be thermody-namically favorable under usual deposition conditions. The conditions which affect saturation (SiCl4 concentration, flow rate, temperature) determine the number of sites on which silicon will nucleate and grow. Reaction product HCl is likely responsible for suppressing silicon growths on the oxide near exposed areas of silicon. Evidence is given that the oxide-silicon interaction occurs in hydrogen only and involves water as a transport agent. SINCE shortly after the first epitaxial layers of silicon and germanium were grown over large areas, efforts have been underway to grow selectively on specified portions of the surface. Such selective growth should be particularly applicable to monolithic integrated circuits. Usually the approach has been to use a mask to delineate the desired area,'-7 but the VLS methoda can also be used, and direct programmed atomic beam deposition has been suggested.9 The masking techniques may embody two forms: in one the mask is a material which can later be removed along with any growths attached to it; in the other, attempts are made to prevent growth on the mask, so that over a whole slice the only deposition that will occur is in the unmasked regions. The present work is concerned with only the latter case, and specifically with silicon. Joyce and Baldrey1 suggested the use of thermally grown silicon dioxide as a mask material and showed that for the proper choice of operating conditions (total flow, SiCl4 concentration, total deposition time, and temperature) spurious growth could be minimized and that if the deposition times were not too large, and the criteria not too stringent, a usable process occurred. Later Schnable et al 4 observed that after extended deposition times, during which most of the silicon dioxide became covered with growth, there was always a band of oxide around the exposed silicon area that was quite free of spurious silicon crystallites. This latter observation is particularly intriguing since it extends the hope that with proper precautions masking can be much more versatile than it presently is. (communication to the Secretary+).- The Chiddy method for determining gold and silver in cyanide solutions has been subjected to so many proposed modifications, of which L. W. Bahney's is one, it is natural to suppose the method is defective. There is no denying that this method is capable of giving inaccurate results, but so is any other method of quantitative determination. However, proof has not come to my notice that the troubles are inherent and not in the detail application, and I am inclined to think from our experience that in many cases it is the latter. Errors in this method may be occasioned by: (1) The retention of zinc in the sponge, which tends to desilverize the molten lead in cupellation, similar to the action in the Parkes process, removing gold and silver in a crust of zinc oxide. Failure to remove zinc may result from lack of concentration of hydrochloric acid, clue to neutralization by salts present, volume of liquid too great for the specified amount of acid, or the use of weak acid. (HCl rapidly loses its strength unless kept in perfectly tight containers. The HCl gas escapes even from the ordinary glass-stoppered acid bottles after the plaster seal has been broken.) Undissolved zinc, is likely to be held in the upper part of the lead sponge, which floats above the liquid, and unless the solution is boiled it will escape action. The distribution of cobalt and vanadium over non-equivalent crystallographic sites in C14-type Zr(VCo), alloys has been investigated. An anomalous X-ray scattering technique developed by Skolnick, Kondo. and lavine7 by which the separation in the scattering factors of two similar atoms can be enhanced was employed. Six alloys spanning the pseudobinary section ZrV1.6Co0.4-ZrVO.6CO1.4 at 10pct steps showed a nonrandom compositionally dependent distribution. Specifically, at high vanadium content cobalt preferentially occupied sites of type (6h) and vanadium, sites of type (2a; at low vanadium content the reverse was observed. In addition to the distribution fraction the structural parameters x and z were obtained. There was no significant deviation of these parameters from those obtained in the ideal C14 structure. Certain suggestions are made to account for the observed nonrandomness in the distribution of atoms on the two types of sites. INTERMETALLIC compounds of formula AB2 iso-morphous with MgCu2, MgZn2, and MgNi2 are known as Laves phases. Because Laves phases exhibit high symmetry and coordination numbers, the highest possible for an AB2-type compound,1 they are among the most frequently observed compounds in nature. In recent years interest has centered about the purely transition metal Laves phases2-' in efforts to understand the function of atomic size and electronic structure in the formation of these compounds. It has been observed that pseudobinary Laves phase systems often show a variation of structure across the phase diagram. Such a system is the ZrV2-ZrCo2 in which the structure varies from cubic MgCu2 to hexagonal MgZn2 to cubic MgCu2.4 Some understanding about the conditions under which the second modification is stable can perhaps be gained by studying the distribution of cobalt and vanadium atoms on lattice sites in the MgZn2 modification of the system ZrV2-ZrCo2. In both the MgZn2 and MgNi2-types there exist nonequivalent positions open to occupancy by the B element, whereas in the MgCu2 prototype all sites are equivalent. Skolnick, Kondo, and La-vine7 have developed an anomalous scattering technique suitable for this type of investigation. Whereas the influence of size on the formation of a Laves phase is well recognized, no substantial evidence has been put forth in support of the size ratio dependence of a particular prototype. Berry and Raynor8 suggested that RA /RB ratio does indeed affect the type of structure that is chosen, MgZn2 compounds tending to cluster about 1.225 while MgCu2 compounds were found at larger deviations from this ratio. Dwight,3 however, from a study of 164 Laves phases does not believe this generalization to be justified. Electronic effects are certain to play a part in the stability of Laves phases in general and in the choice of a structure type in particular. For example, size along would favor the formation of Laves compounds of Ti, Zr, Hf, Ta, or Nb as the A element with nickel or copper as the B element. The absence of such is attributed to an unfavorable electron : atom ratio by Elliott and rostoker.4 Early experiments of Laves and witte9 with pseudobinary and pseudoternary systems of the three prototypes established the dependence of crystal structure upon electron: atom ratios. They observed that the MgCu2 structure dissolved elements of higher valency until the electron: atom ratio of =1.8 was reached; the MgZn2 likewise dissolved elements of lower valency replacing zinc. witte,6 from calculations of the electron : atom volumes of Brillouin Zones, obtained limits of stability for the prototypes MgCu2 and MgZn2. Elliott and Rostoker4 used these limits with considerable success in the all-transition element Laves phases they investigated. According to witte,6 compounds between the electron :atom ratios of 1.80 and 2.32 were of the MgZn2 type; those above and below exhibited the MgCu2-type structure. On the basis of these limits and an assumed valency of zirconium based upon the near tetra-valence of titanium, Elliott and Rostoker obtained valencies for the first transition series elements. For the Laves phases with which this investigation is concerned, ZrV2 and ZrCo2, the authors calculated electron :atom ratios of 2.54 and 1.56, respectively. These ratios are for the MgCu2-type structure and straddle the stability band of the MgZn2 modification. One could, therefore, predict that a pseudobinary system ZrV2-ZrCo2 should pass through the MgZn2 modification in traversing the composition diagram from one end to the other. Implicit in this assumption is a smooth change of the electron: atom ratio from 2'54 to 1.56. MOSS10 states that his finding the low temperature structure of ZrCr2 to be C15 instead of C14 alters greatly Elliott's valency of zirconium and hence the assumed valencies of the other metals. THE increase in the number of coal-cleaning plants employing dense-medium processes occurring since 1946 is especially interesting when viewed historically. Both sand and magnetite were introduced as material for heavy mediums at about the same time, sand in the Chance process in 1921 and magnetite in the Conklin process in 1922, but from that point on their records diverge. The Chance process enjoyed a steady growth from its inception, whereas no additional magnetite plants were built in the United States for over 20 years. Then, following the close of the World War 11, magnetite was again introduced, this time with marked success. During the following years some 47 plants employing magnetite medium were built. This rapid growth of dense-medium cleaning has been concurrent with widespread adoption of full-seam mining on one hand and a return to a more competitive market on the other. At a time when changing mining practice has provided cleaning plants with dirtier coal and changing market conditions have simultaneously demanded a cleaner product, the industry has through necessity turned to improved preparation. The inherently greater sharpness with which dense-medium processes can separate coal from impurity is thus helping to hold the line against ever-increasing mining costs and at the same time assisting materially in retaining badly needed markets. Although dense-medium cleaning unquestionably offers a distinct advantage when the washing problem is difficult, other methods can provide almost equally high efficiency when the coal is easy to wash. Moreover, fine coal cannot yet be treated by heavy medium in a proved process, although the Driessen cyclone is in the pilot-plant stage. Most of the present types of dense-medium equipment have been in use only a few years, and the dearth of information in the literature concerning their performance characteristics is entirely understandable, Nevertheless this information is necessary if the process is to be intelligently applied to individual cleaning problems. Without data on the efficiency of a process in a particular type of separation, it is difficult to assess the advantage to be expected from it. Similarly, the role of particle size in heavy-medium separation is important in some cases, yet there is little published information on this aspect. To mention only one more of the numerous points on which essential information is lacking, the bearing of medium characteristics on performance has been discussed only in qualitative terms. It was with the hope of providing information on some of these points that the Bureau of Mines built a dense-medium pilot plant for cleaning coal at its Northwest Experiment Station in Seattle in 1950. The plant has been operated continuously since that time, and over 50 runs have been made on 7 coals exhibiting a wide range of washability characteristics. An idea of the magnitude of this work will be gained from the fact that examination of the plant products has involved some 600 float-and-sink separations and about 2500 ash determinations. A laboratory pilot plant is especially well adapted to investigate many aspects of performance because close control over test conditions can be exercised and because a large number of tests can be made rapidly. On the other hand, factors such as consumption of medium and other cost items can be investigated satisfactorily only in a commercial plant. Actually, the two forms of investigation should be complementary, with the laboratory work pointing the way for confirming tests in commercial units. Pilot Plant The dense-medium pilot plant employed for this work comprises a 24x30-in. drum-type separating vessel, a 12-in. densifier, a 12-in. magnetic separator, a 26-in. x 9-ft vibrating screen, and the necessary pumps and conveyors for handling materials. Arrangement of these units corresponds with the flowsheet used in most commercial plants, except that a thickener is not provided for the feed to the magnetic separator. Coal and refuse discharge from the separating drum to the vibrator, which is divided longitudinally down the center. Medium draining through the first 3 ft of the screen is recirculated directly to the drum. Sprays on the middle 3 ft of the screen rinse medium from the products, and the last 3-ft section is for dewatering. Dilute medium from the rinsing and dewatering sections is pumped to the magnetic separator, where magnetic solids are recovered. These are pumped to the densifier, from which they return to the medium-drainage sump by gravity through a demagnetizing coil. The drum-type separating vessel is a scale model of a commercial unit. Feed enters axially at one end of the drum just below the surface of the bath, and float material overflows through a circular opening at the other end. Particles sinking to the bottom of the bath are picked up by lifting flights bolted to the inner wall of the drum, elevated out of the bath, and sluiced to the vibrating screen. Baffles suspended in the bath prevent float material from entering the sink-lifting flights. About 8 gpm of medium is used to sluice the feed into the drum. An additional 15 to 24 gpm, depending upon operating conditions, is added through two pipes dipping into the bath behind the baffle on the side where the sink-lifting flights enter the bath. The bath available for separation is 2 ft long and 13 in. wide, giving an area of 2.08 sq ft. Depth of bath from the surface to the top of the sink-lifting flights, measured vertically below the axis, is 6 in.

ABSTRACT Berea and Bandera sandstone samples were impacted with both 3/4-in. and 1/2-in. long wedges, each having a 60° included angle and a 0.05-in. flat, at various confining pressures, with borehole and pore pressures held fixed at atmospheric pressure. Samples were saturated with air, water, glycerine-water, solirol, mineral oil and soltrol-mineral oil mixtures to obtain a wide range of pore fluid viscosity. Penetration depth was held constant at 0.1 in. Dry and soltrol-mineral oil-saturated Berea samples were impacted at depths of penetration from 0.01 to 0.04 in. under 1,000 psi confining pressure to study crater initiation. Results indicate that viscosity of the pore fluid is influential primarily during the early stages of crater formation. Differences in bit force, crater volume and blow energy for tests parallel and perpendicular to bedding were significant, but decreased as the stress state was elevated. Crater volume, blow energy and bit force were nonlinearly related with depth of penetration. Crater volume was nonlinear with energy of blow. Fixed-penetration tests on saturated Berea yielded greater crater volume than did similar tests on dry samples. Differences in the nature of deformation for low values of bit penetration were noted between saturated and unsaturated samples. INTRODUCTION Rock failure during bit-tooth impact and scouring action constitutes a vital part of the drilling process and a difficult problem for researchers. Much study has been devoted to various aspects of the problem, and much has been learned about mechanics of rock failure. However, analytical treatment of drilling at depth remains difficult, partly because there are so many factors involved and because valid simulation of downhole conditions is extremely difficult. Forming individual craters by a bit tooth or chisel impacting, or indenting, a rock mass has been studied by many investigators.1-18 Similarity between single-tooth chisel impact and the corresponding action of a rotary bit has been discussed by Appl and Gatley, Garner, Podio, and Gatlin l8 compared the similarity in single-blow impact tests with microbit drilling data reported by Cunningham and Eenink.l9 Maurerll has used single-tooth impact data to develop a "perfect cleaning" theory of rotary drilling. Individual roller cutter-tooth impact data have been reported by Young. 20 Single-tooth tests in all of the cited literature were carried out on dry rocks. Inasmuch as any subsurface rock of oilfield interest is saturated with some fluid, it seemed desirable to study crater formation in permeable rocks saturated with a viscous pore fluid as a step, however short, toward more realistic simulation of subsurface conditions. This paper presents results of single-blow chisel impact studies on Berea and Bandera sandstones, both dry and saturated with pore fluids of various viscosities at confining pressures to 10,000 psi. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS The same basic apparatus for single-blow chisel impact at elevated stress states, described in earlier papers was used in this study. l6. l8 Fig. 1 shows the complete experimental system; Fig. 2 shows a cross section of the pressure cell, with a sample ready to be impacted. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Two different rocks, Berea and Bandera sandstones, were used in this study. Both rocks have been used extensively in research, and rock descriptions can be found in a paper by Gnirk and Cheatham.15 Permeability to air of Berea is about 300 md normal to bedding and 540 md parallel to bedding. Bandera had vertical and horizontal air permeabilities of 18 and 57 md, respectively.

L. S. BUSCH—We have had presented two methods of measuring these variations in powder compacts. E. OROWAN—Tn connection with the rolling mill research work carried out at. the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge, with the help of the British Iron and Steel Research Association. Dr. E. A. W. Hoff, Mr. J. Los, and myself, have determined coefficients of friction at ex- treme pressures for a number of liquid and solid lubricants, both by direct measurement, and by calculation from measured values of the roll force. The most efficient lubricants at these high pressures (for the small amounts of sliding that, occur in rolling) were camphor and. in particular, borneol (Borneo-camphor). Perhaps such lubricants could be used with advantage in the kind of work described by Dr. Wulff. L. S. BUSCH—1 think Dr. Wulff has in the past mentioned experiments which have been performed in the extrusion and rolling of metals and which led to conclusions which can be applied to the compacting of metal powder. A. SQUIRE*—There have been some recent developments in the field of high pressure lubricants which indicate that boron nitride might be a very desirable material to employ as a die lubricant. At the present time its cost is prohibitive, but as the need arises for the material it will undoubtedly come down in price. The present price is $200. a pound. AN improved method of measuring the surface area of a comminution product down to any desired particle size has been developed. The method is largely graphical, and requires relatively little calculation. It can be used with materials containing large amounts of clay, or excess fines of any kind. The surface area S is expressed in terms of square meters per 100 c.c. of solids. This expression is based upon volume rather than weight, and is considered to be more suitable for crushing and grinding problems, where the machines ordinarily are operated under constant volume conditions. It has the advantage that surface areas of different materials can be compared directly, even though their specific gravities may be unknown. The "specific surface" of a material, or the number of square centimeters of surface area per gram, is equal to 100S divided by the specific gravity. Particle diameters are expressed in microns, K being the diameter of the largest particle present and L the grind limit, or lower size limit of the particles formed directly by grinding. The value of K does not always coincide exactly with the diameters of the largest particles retained on the coarsest testing sieve, since the largest particles formed in crushing and grinding are often slabby, or have other irregular shapes. L has been chosen as 0.700 microns, or number 27.5 in the size number series, for reasons to be explained later. S is the total surface area of all particles larger than L microns in diameter. When a homogeneous comminution product is separated into fractions whose diameters bear a constant geometrical relationship p to each other, and the log per cent weight retained upon each size and passing the next larger size is plotted against the log diameter, a straight line results, which is called the distribution line, and which has a slope in called the distribution modulus. The distribution line can be extended to any desired limiting size, and the total surface area of all particles larger than that size can be calculated. The equation of the distributi0n line is [w = Cx" [I]] where w is the per cent weight retained on each successive sieve; x is the particle diameter; and C is the per cent weight retained on an opening of unit diameter.2 Theoretically, the distribution line can be extended to include infinitely small particles. When it is so extended, and the assumption is made that no fine particles are present other than those accounted for by the equation; the log per cent cumulative weight passing any series of sizes, plotted against the log diameter passed, will result in a straight line lying parallel to and above the plotted distribution line.

The shortage of adequate construction sites and their difficult location has compelled many engineering structures to be planned in old mining areas in Japan. This paper shows, first, the characteristics of the excavated underground environment and next, the necessary preventive measures during construction of surface structures. Where the depth of a mined out area is relatively shallow, there is a tendency of cave-in consequent to surface loadings. The effect of surface loadings is inversely proportional to the depth of goals. Finally, a power plant project is studied as an example.

MANY steel parts may crack if quenched directly into a bath near room temperature, but not if quenched at a temperature just above the range where martensite forms and then allowed to cool slowly to room temperature. This latter procedure, which is the basis for such modern hardening techniques as "martempering " and "isothermal quenching," may entail some sacrifice in depth of hardening but very little, if any, in intensity of hardening. In planning such treatments, it is necessary to know the upper limit of the martensite range, and often desirable to know the proportion of martensite that would form on cooling to any lower temperature; furthermore, the tendency of a particular steel to crack when quenched is unquestionably associated with the temperature range of martensite formation, and consequently knowledge of this range aids in selecting the optimum composition for a given application. Certain puzzling phenomena associated with the properties of quenched and tempered steel may be at least partly clarified as the manner in which martensite forms is more fully under- stood. Information on the temperature range of martensite formation, particularly with respect to how much martensite results from quenching to a given temperature, is lacking for most commercial types of carbon and low-alloy steel. These considerations led us to study martensite formation in 14 carbon and low-alloy steels. The resultant data may be directly used in the following ways: (I) for selecting the lowest quenching temperature at which no martensite will form; (2) for selecting the highest quenching temperature at which virtually dl marten- site will form, thereby avoiding quenching to an unnecessarily lower temperature with attendant danger of cracking; and (3) in producing a mixture of tempered marten- site and bainite, which in high-carbon steels has been found to possess somewhat better ductility than tempered martensite, yet does not require the full transformation time necessary for a completely bainitic (austempered) structure. PART I. OBSERVATIONS OF MARTEN- SITE FORMATION IN FOURTEEN CARBON AND LOW-ALLOY STEELS Transformation of austenite to pearlite or bainite can be conveniently studied by observing the change that occurs over a period of time at constant temperature; such studies are the basis of the isothermal transformation diagram (S-curve). This isothermal technique is not applicable to martensite formation, which occurs within a time interval too small to measure, at least by any ordinary means. For all practical purposes, therefore, martensite may be regarded as forming only during cooling and not during a period of time at constant temperature. As austenite is cooled below

THE mine and concentrator of the Howe Sound Co., Chelan Division, are at Holden, in a remote section of the Cascade Mountains of northwestern Washington. Holden is at an elevation of 3200 ft., in the narrow valley of Railroad Creek. This creek drains into Lake Chelan, at a point some 40 miles up the lake from the town of Chelan. The concentrator treats 2000 to 2500 tons of low-grade copper-gold-zinc ore per day. Concentration is achieved by the differential flotation process, with recovery of 94 per cent copper and 82 per cent gold in the copper concentrate, followed by the recovery of 65 to 70 per cent zinc in the zinc flotation circuit. The final flotation tailing is deslimed, and coarse sands, representing 60 to 70 per cent of the total, are cyanided. The tonnage of tailing material amounts to 1900 to 2370 tons per day. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS The property is within the Chelan National Forest. Railroad Creek is a fishing stream, being stocked regularly with trout from State hatcheries. Consequently, in planning a milling operation, the Howe Sound Co. was obliged to avoid any pollution of the stream by tailing material, and also destruction of valuable stands of timber. Moreover, the selected tailing disposal sites should not mar the natural beauty of the valley. In addition to these requirements, the problem of tailing disposal at Holden was complicated by topography and climatic conditions. The valley is long and narrow, averaging 1200 to 1500 ft. in width. Its walls are flaring at a steep angle. There are no extensive flat areas suitable for deposition of tailing. All valleys tributary to Railroad Creek, also the well-marked paths of snowslides, must be avoided. Finally, the direction of prevailing winds and possible dust hazard arising therefrom dictated the necessity of selecting the tailing-disposal sites downstream from the mill building and two campsites. Heavy snowfall during the winter months of November to March, inclusive, impedes building of the retaining dike, making it necessary to prepare the needed storage space during the summer months. It is inadvisable, also, to do any dike building during the freezing weather, because the dike becomes unstable with the spring thaws, producing inevitable "sloughing" of the built-up borders. TAILING-DISPOSAL SITES The existing tailing-disposal areas are near the south wall of the valley. They were developed, and put to use in the following sequence: No. I. Area.-Covers approximately 10 acres. Built up to the height of 60 ft.

The dislocatiorl and stacking-fault structuve of epitaxial GaAs1-,PX lms been examined by chemical etching. The layers were groun in the (100) direction and etch Pils were developed on (111} planes which nad been lapped and polished on the epiLaxia1 layevs. Tile effecL of the jollolcing cariables on the quality of the epilaxial layers has been examined: doping leuel, grouth rate, and composition. High stacking-faullL densilies weve found in the GuAsi_xpx layers. These are not observed in heavily dolled epitaxial layers tzar in layers with low phosphorus compositions. The dislocatiorz density in GuAsi-x px was highest at the sub-stvate- epilaxia1 layer interface. Composilion changes introduced dislocations in the epitaxial layers. ManY semiconductor p-n junction lasers of Group TIT-Group V compounds and their alloys have been reported in the past several years. Laser action at visible wavelengths in GaAsl-x,Px was first reported by Holonyak and Bevacqua. GaAs, a direct transition semiconductor which lases, and Gap, an indirect transition semiconductor which does not lase, form a continuous series of solid solutions.2 Laser junctions can be fabricated in GaAsl-xPx crystals with phosphorus compositions up to about 40 mol pct. In addition to the production of coherent radiation in these crystals, the efficient recombination radiation of p-n junctions in this material has equally important potential in the development of low-power semiconductor lamps. To achieve a high conversion efficiency of electrical to optical energy in p-n junctions in this material, the relation of physical properties of the crystal to luminescence efficiency must be better understood. Although the electrical, optical, and device properties of GaAsl -xPx junction lasers are understandably of considerable interest, the work to date indicates that the more serious problems are the chemical and metallurgical difficulties encountered in the growth of this material.3 In addition to the problems of chemical purity, crystal imperfections, such as dislocations and stacking faults, can be expected to affect both the efficiency of the radiative recombination process and the perfection of the p-n junction.3 The last requirement, i.c., that of the perfection of the p-n junction, is a particularly troublesome one in the fabrication of laser diodes. To obtain good laser diodes, the p-n junction must be flat, which permits the radiation to be reflected from the resonant cavity boundaries. Junction planarity is extremely sensitive to the crystal perfection of the semiconductor material. Also, it is known that at high dislocation densities (-105 per sq cm) it has not been possible to build laser junctions in GaAsl-xPx . Few studies have been reported on the crystal defect structure of GaAsl-,P,. The first serious study seems to be that of Wolfe, Nuese, and Holonyak,3 who examined the dislocation structure of monocrystalline bulk (nonepitaxial) material grown by halogen vapor transport. In this paper are reported some observations on the dislocation and stacking-fault structure of GaAsl_,P, crystals grown by a vapor transport process on substrates of GaAs. EXPERIMENTAL Crystal Growth. The GaAsl-xPx crystals were grown in an open-tube flow system, using two sets of reagents. GaAs, Pr(red), and HC1 were employed in one method. The transport reaction is =950JC GaAs+HC1 = GaCl +1/4As4 +1/2H2 and the deposition reaction is 2GaAs1-xPx +GaCl3 Composition control is obtained by the flow rate of the HC1 and the vapor pressure of the P4, which is maintained in a separately controlled furnace. The second method has been described by Ruehr-wein4 and utilizes gallium, AsH3, PH3, and HC1. The same transport and deposition reactions as above are involved. Composition control is obtained solely by the flow rates of the three gases involved. All of the crystals were grown on chemically polished GaAs substrates oriented on the (100) plane. The thicknesses of the epitaxial layers were typically 100 to 300p. Revealing of Dislocations. Dislocations were re-vealed on both the( 111 ) and { l l l }b faces by chemical etching. The specimen to be examined was mounted at 54.7 deg, lapped on glass with 3-p alumina, polished on cloth with 3-p diamond paste, and, to remove work damage, chemically polished at room temperature for

During the winter of 1948-1949 the quarry ramp was lowered about 30 ft and during the 1949 season practically all drilling was done from the quarry floor, developing a face from 72 to 83 ft for the entire quarry area. The performance and cost table shows our record for 1948 and 1949.
