The Klerksdorp gold mining district, South Africa, experiences a relatively high level of seismicity with many seismic events of magnitude greater than 4. These large events appear to have foci close to fault planes, most of which displace the strata by several hundred metres over a wide area. To help understand the mechanism of these large mining- associated seismic events, in situ stress measurements were made at 4 sites using "CSIR doorstopper" strain relief techniques. The sites were chosen close to, or some distance from fault planes and other structures. The results show that at all 4 sites a relatively large horizontal stress is oriented approximately north- west. The magnitude of this stress ranges from 0,78-1,O of the vertical stress. A marked horizontal stress anisotropy, varying from 13-30 MPa is also present. The dominant structural features are large, north-east striking normal faults which extend across the entire length of the goldfield. Displacements across these faults vary from a few centimetres to several hundred metres. Bedding plane faults across which large displacements may occur are also common as are north and north-west striking dykes. The majority of the faults strike at approximately 90º to the maximum horizontal stress and at all sites a large compressive stress plunges in the direction of dip of the strata and fault planes. Thus a significant shear stress may act across suitably oriented planes causing them to be in a state of potentially unstable equilibrium. Self-diffusion coefficients were measured using the modified shear cell technique over a temperature range from 31" to 401°C. These data agree within experimental error with those of Petit and Nachtrieb, which were determined from 30°to 99°C. LIQUID self-diffusion behavior in gallium has been studied previously by Petit and Nachtrieb&apos; using their shear cell technique.&apos; Data were obtained in that investigation over temperatures ranging from 30.6 to 98.7"C, and these comprise the only published data for liquid gallium. In the work reported here, diffusion data were obtained from 30.8 to 400-9.Cusing a shear cell technique different from that of Petit and Nachtrieb. This modified shear cell method and the mathematical analysis for diffusion in a finite capillary geometry have been previously described.3 PROCEDURES AND ANALYSIS The segments of the modified shear cell were fabricated from types 304 and 316 stainless steel. No corrosion problems with gallium were encountered until attempts were made to obtain data at 500°C. The diffusion capillary diameter was 1.59 mm and capillary lengths for the four sets of cell segments used are given in Table I. Gallium with a purity of 99.999 wt pct was obtained from Var-Lac-Oid Chemical Co. The gallium-72 isotope used to measure the self-diffusion coefficients was produced from this inert gallium by irradiation in The University of Texas Reactor Facility, and was checked for radiochemical purity. Following a period of isothermal diffusion controlled to within 0.0l°C, the contents of each capillary section were emptied into a counting planchet, weighed to assure that gallium had not been lost during handling, and the radioactivity determined by windowless gas-flow proportional counting. Great care was taken to obtain a reproducible counting geometry for the samples. Diffusion coefficients were obtained from the solu-tion3 to the diffusion equation for the modified shear cell problem, viz.: in which B2= C2(t)Li + L2)- CSL1-COL2 P* (C0-Cs)(L1+ L2) and L, and L2 are the capillary segment lengths. The step-function initial concentration distribution was expressed as C(x,O) = C, for -L1 = x < 0 and C(x,O) = Co for 0 < x 5 L?. Also, C2(0 = ^- fcix,t)dx Computation of the diffusion coefficients was done numerically as described in our earlier paper.3 Because of the short half-life of gallium-72 (14.1 hr) and the relatively long counting times taken to give a precise value of the diffusion coefficient, it was necessary to account for the radioactive decay both during the actual count and between counts for different samples (before and after diffusion). Thus, the average count rate Cz(t) for a second sample counted from times t3 to t4 can be made consistent with the average rate Co determined for a first sample counted from times t1 to t2 by the relationship: N(e-»i-e-M») , , C2(f) " &-«,)(*-«.-«-»«) [21 in which N is the total number of counts taken and is the decay constant. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The self-diffusion coefficients determined in this investigation are listed in Table 11. Values of the parameters used to calculate the coefficients are given in the table, as are values of the random counting error &apos; for the concentration ratio pz and the corresponding expected random variation AD in the diffusion coefficient. The quantity is calculable from: &apos;Cg — C2(t)} , „ ,2 .-„¦, M co-csl(ACs)J W in which AC is the error in the individual count rate. The mean values of the diffusion coefficients within each temperature group are also given in Table 11. Such temperature groupings of data are reasonable because of the small variations between the temperature~.~

Technical progress takes place in two directions: the improvement of methods, affecting the quality of the product; and increase in the economy of operations, affecting its cost. In the iron-industry, practice is pretty well settled, and revolutionary changes of method are, for the present, not to be expected. Hence, in this industry, the principal endeavor is to reduce costs by the use of labor-saving inventions, such as the machines brought into use during the last decade. But it is not alone necessary to reduce the labor-cost; complete economy requires also a saving in raw material. Under this head we may rank the coal employed as metallurgical fuel; and it follows that progress includes the economic use of fuel, so managed as not to injure quality of product. In the present paper it will be shown how, by suitable utilization of the heat from the furnace, a large portion of it may be made available for other purposes. Such utilization of waste-gases is important in all industries which employ furnaces (especially heating-and smelting-furnaces); and in the first rank of these stand the iron-, glass-, and porcelain-manufactures. The following pages are devoted chiefly to the waste-gases of smelting-works, and especially to those reverberatory-furnace gases which are not combustible.&apos; The object of metallurgical furnaces is either to fuse the material charged or to bring it to a high temperature required for further mechanical manipulation. Leaving out of consideration for the present the reverberatory fusion-furnaces, we have to do with the heating-furnaces employed in connection with rolls, hammers, or hydraulic presses. Some of the more important properties of finished materials are strength, ductility, toughness, resistance to alternating and repeated stresses, etc. Of these, the property that appears to have received the least consideration, at least in this country, is toughness, which is due, possibly, to our regarding toughness as a qualitative property or, at any rate, as one that parallels ductility. This arises out of our greater experience with the simple carbon steels in the rolled or forged (non-heat-treated) condition which, qualitatively, are tough if ductile and are not tough if brittle. In this way we have erroneously become accustomed to judging the toughness of a material from its behavior in the tensile or similar test. The point of view presented in the present paper is that toughness, like hardness or tensile strength, should be regarded as an independent property and of sufficient importance to require, in so far as that may be possible, quantitative determinations. If such be true, it becomes at once necessary to devise experimental means for measuring or valuating toughness, and the notched-bar impact test (the Charpy test) is advanced as the most logical test that has so far been developed for this purpose. It is further advanced, with particular emphasis, that we have two kinds of toughness to deal with and, accordingly, they will be dealt with independently. Classification of Materials According to Toughness Toughness has been defined somewhat as follows: Tough materials are those that offer considerable resistance to permanent deformation but which, once such resistance has been overcome, may be deformed plastically, but only by the expenditure of considerable energy. In other words, tough materials may be deformed plastically but they absorb a considerable amount of work in the process. This kind of toughness may be called "static" toughness when the rate of loading is reasonably slow or "dynamic" toughness when the rate of loading is comparatively rapid, as in impact testing, but in all cases the stress distribution is essentially uniform. There are many uranium deposits which are too deep, too poor in quality or too small in extent to be economically strip mined. It now appears that this uranium can be mined using in situ leaching processes. A number of field tests have been, are being or will be conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of In site leaching. Preliminary results are encouraging, but a major question concerns the restoration of the mine site, which is generally contained within an aquifer. It is necessary to ensure that the quality of the water is not adversely affected by the mining operation. One component of the lixiviant is necessarily a cation and, during the course of mining, the ion exchange sites of the minerals in the mine zone become saturated with this cation. Ammonium is the cation now commonly used. Clearly, any restoration procedure or question involving the rate of cation migration with the groundwater all necessarily involve the process of ion exchange coupled with flow in porous media. The equations describing this process are presented in this paper and numerical solutions obtained. Preliminary results showing the effect of isotherm shape, cation exchange capacity, flow and dispersion are presented. These results demonstrate that in many situations cation migration in ground water will be slow.

MILLING is one of the metallurgical arts whereby the extraction of the largest possible proportion of the value in an ore is effected at the least possible expense. Stamp-milling* is that particular process in which a heavy body of iron is caused to fall upon the ore so as to disintegrate it and thereby induce a separation between what is valuable and what is worthless. The latter is usually less in specific gravity, and is therefore, by the further aid of water, removed from the former, which is then collected by the use of mercury. Several similes have been employed to describe this process. The stamp has been likened to a hammer of which the stem is the handle and the die the anvil. The ore upon which the stamp falls has been compared to a nut awaiting the descent of the hammer whose blow is to separate the valueless shell, the quartz, from the valuable kernel, the gold. When we begin to pursue our inquiries, however, we find that the analogy is just sufficiently true to emphasize the departures from it. The hammer falls, the anvil is fixed; so with the stamps and the mortar. The anvil is made of softer metal than the hammer; so also the die is often, and should be always, of steel or iron less hard and more tough than that of the shoe. The movement of the hammer and the drop of the stamp are both intermittent. In regard to their intermittent action, as in many other respects, stamp-mills arrange themselves under two types, which, though apparently contradictory, have both been evolved from a common original, and are united by a great variety of intermediate modifications. The slow speed and the high drop of the mills of Gilpin county Colorado, appear to have very little in common with the fast speed and short drop of those of the main gold belt of California; yet the practice of the one was largely derived from that of the other,

The selection rules fir twinning in fcc, bcc, and hcp lattices as established in Part I are used to predict the positions, relative to the matrix (untwinned) reciprocal lattice, of reflections due to double diffraction from the twins. These doubly diffracted reciprocal lattice points, which often coincide with ordinary matrix reciprocal lattice points, are deduced from kinematical considerations. 1. INTRODUCTION. A Bragg diffracted beam under certain conditions may be rediffracted to produce a third beam i .e., the incident beam, the first diffracted beam, and the rediffracted beam). In such a case an initial incident beam is diffracted by a set of planes; the diffracted beam may then be rediffracted by a second set of crystallographically different planes. The initially diffracted beam acts as an incident beam for the second set of planes, thus resulting in a twice-diffracted beam. This twice-diffracted beam may be regarded as a singly diffracted beam from a set of lattice planes whose structure factor is zero. In order to find the reciprocal lattice point corresponding to the doubly diffracted beam, it is customary1,2 to combine vectorially the component reciprocal lattice vectors which head to the extra reflections. For example, hcp metals may exhibit the forbidden (0001) reflections.* As Fig. 1 shows, the (0001) reciprocal lattice point results from: (1010) + (1011) = (0001) Similarly, combination of the beams (1011) and (1010) gives rise to: (1011)- (1010) = (0001) As Pashley and stowell2 have pointed out, even if in fact the double diffraction points lie on the Ewald sphere, they may not actually represent observed doubly diffracted beams because the initially diffracted primary beam, i.e., the source, must also correspond to a reciprocal lattice point which lies on the sphere of reflection; however, the reciprocal lattice point corresponding to the planes causing the rediffraction need not lie on the sphere. A little consideration of the Ewald construction in Fig. 2 makes this argument clear. In Fig. 2 the incident beam is represented by the wave vector ko. This beam is initially diffracted by the lattice planes (hkl) which are represented by the reciprocal lattice vector r(hk1) The reciprocal lattice point (hkl) of course lies on the Ewald sphere in order that the Bragg condition be satisfied. The initially diffracted beam is represented by the wave vector kl. If now kl is rediffracted by a second set of planes (h&apos;k&apos;l&apos;) resulting in k2 the lattice point (h"k"l") must lie on the Ewald sphere if the double diffracted beam k2 is to be observed. It is clear that (h"k"l") is the vector sum of (hkl) and (h&apos;k&apos;l&apos;), and that (h&apos;k&apos;l&apos;) need not in fact lie on the Ewald sphere. In the usual1,2 analysis the origin (000) of the reciprocal lattice is shifted to the point (hkl). However the translation (000)— (hkl) automatically shifts the point (h&apos;k&apos;l&apos;) to the Ewald sphere, i.e., (h&apos;k&apos;l&apos;)— (h"k"1"). It is to be seen that (hkl), the source reflection, must lie on the Ewald sphere; if it does not the translation (000) — (hkl) places the "new" origin off the sphere, not satisfying the Ewald construction and hence the Bragg condition. The point (h"k"1") of course must lie on the sphere if it corresponds to an observed doubly diffracted beam. It is to be noted that crystals having the hcp structure, as just discussed, are intrinsically capable (i.e., without lattice defects such as twins) of double diffraction, as contrasted to fcc and bcc crystals which are extrinsically capable (requiring lattice defects or reoriented lattice regions). The "allowed" bcc reciprocal lattice points (which comprise an fcc lattice) are (110), (2001, (211), (220), (310), (2221, (321), (4001, and so forth. The combination

The following letter has been received from Prof. Alfred C. Lane, of Tufts College, who is now in charge of the department, of mining in the College of Engineering, American E. F. University, Beaune, France. My DEAR MR. STOUGHTON: I have had a very interesting time here. We were received fast Saturday with great courtesy by the Schneiders at the Creusot plant, and saw many interesting things, from the mammoth guns clown. In one trip I saw a coal mine, an iron mine, an oilshale mine, a gypsum mine, and a most beautiful fluorspar mine. So you see we were not badly located. A mine like Epinac, which has a washery, a briquetting plant, and great central electric plant where coal that might otherwise be waste is converted into electricity and shipped away at 30,000 volts pressure, is of interest mechanically as well as geologically. Many of the French coal seams are very thick here and have especial mining methods. The Department of Mining has been manned by men with whom it was a pleasure and an honor to be associated, as well as with Dean Reber who was in charge of the College of Engineering as a whole. Names like Captain H. C. Ray, former professor at the University of Pittsburgh, on leave in the army, Captain Archbald of the Colliery Engineer at one time, whose work in the Pennsylvania coal mines is well known, Captain Vail of the Engineering and Mining Journal staff and Captain E. C. Dietrich of the Southwest, are familiar to members of the Institute, and Are guarantees of competent instruction.

The spitzlutte, as described by Rittinger, is an instrument by which saud is sorted in a continual upward-flowing stream of water. Its usual firm is that of a pointed box, placed with the point downward, the box receiving. its feed of sand and water on one side and discharging its tailings on the other. The sorted product or concentration is discharged at the bottom, at the apex of the box, through which it falls against an upward current of water, which current serves to effect the sorting and separation. To make this exposure to the quicksand condition still more effective, an inverted dam is placed across the spitzlutte, which forces the sand in its passage from the feed side to the discharge to pass clown into the more active portion of the upward-flowing current of water. In the form adopted for small tests in the mining laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (see accompaaying sketch) the feed is&apos;throogh a central funnel instead of being at the side, and the apex of this funnel, extending down nearly to the apex of the cone, talks the place of the inverted dam in the large spitzlutte. To keep the experiment perfectly under control a bulb or bottle is attached by a rubber connecting-tube to receive the concentrations, and between this bottle and the apex of the spitzlutte is placed a glass tube of conical form, with a side tube for&apos; the admission of water. By regulating the admission of water through this tube the concentration may be allowed to go down into the bulb as fast or as slowly as the richness of the ore seem.; to demand. This spitzlutte may be used on products that have been previously sized to take out the heavy mineral. As an example of this a test was made upon a sample of ore where the galena, blende, and quartz were much mixed up, but separated fairly when crushed. The sample of ore was from Newburyport, and assayed 16.61) per cent. lead.. After sizing through a series of sieves the ore yielded conceutrations and tailings to the spitzlutte as follows :

Several aspects of the calcination of Michigan limestone were investigated: the rate of calcination of limestone spheres with diameters from 1.8 to 14 cm at temperatures from 800° to 1200°C by a thermogravimetric method; the temperature profile across limestone during calcination; the excess pressure developed in the interior of the stone during calcination; the pore surface area, pore volume, and effective gas diffusivity in burnt lime; and the microstructure of polished and fracture surfaces. It is found that, over a wide range of experimental conditions, the difference between the surface and center temperatures remains essentially unchanged during the latter half of calcination. From the rate of weight loss after about 50% calcination, the value 0.00126 cal per cm sec degree is found for the effective thermal conductivity of burnt lime. From the excess internal pressure measurements, i.e., 0.4 to 6 cm Hg at 800° to 1200°C, the permeability of burnt lime is estimated to be within the range 8 X 10-&apos; to 5 X 10&apos; sq cm. With increasing temperature and time of calcination, the pore structure of burnt lime coarsens as indicated by a decrease in the pore surface area, pore volume, and an increase in the average pore size. For the temperature range 600° to 835°C the ratio (effective gas diffusivity/molecular diffusivity) is about 0.18.

THIS short note on the probable character of the organic sulfur compounds in coal can do no more than indicate lines of research. We have no new experimental work to describe, nothing comparable in value with the careful studies of American coals by Powell and Parr1 and Yancey and Frazer.2 A study of the manner in which sulfur compounds exist in British coals (and their behavior on heat treatment) is rendered increasingly necessary by the fact that the British reserves of good coking coals of reasonably low sulfur content are fast being depleted. We believe that it is essentially by a study of the modes of formation, occurrence, and decomposition of the various types of inorganic and organic sulfur compounds in coal that it will be possible, with hope of success, to attack the problem of purifying coals, otherwise eminently suitable for coking, from these objectionable ingredients. Sulfur, so far as is at present known, does not normally occur in the free state in the coal conglomerate, but is chiefly distributed, irregularly, in three forms: 1. As primary constituents of the coal conglomerate, organic in nature and probably associated with those molecular complexes that have resulted from the degradation of the proteins of the plant tissues responsible for the formation of the coal mass. These constituents can be classed as "organic sulfur." 2. As metallic sulfides, e.g., iron pyrites. 3. As metallic sulfates, e.g., calcium sulfate and ferrous sulfate. (The occurrence of these compounds varies with the occurrence and degree of degradation of class 2.)

R. P. Seelig.*—Dr. Lenel is to be congratulated on his presentation of a particularly interesting paper describing the use of the powder metallurgy process for the production of magnetic pole pieces. The only thing that might be added is that we have been successful in producing pole . pieces with a narrow hysteresis curve by the use of considerably lower sintering temperatures than the ones used by Dr. Lenel. It is quite possible that this use of lowe- temperatures has considerably widened the field of commercial application for pole pieces made from metal powders. Development work is currently being done on an a.c. application of a sintered iron part. However, I am in full agreement with Dr. Lenel that if eddy currents are an important factor in the application, we cannot substitute sintered material for laminated sheet-metal structures. Mr. Peters&apos; remarks concerning the limitations of machine parts were well taken. The emphasis of the limitations makes it easier to define clearly what we can do and-what the advantages are of machine parts made of metal powders. When I mention metal-powder machine parts, I mean those of relatively high density, although complete elimination of porosity is not possible at this time. The limitations of the field for this type of parts are largely economical. I believe that Mr. Langhammer has made that point very clear. The following questions are very often asked: How large a part can you make? How close can you hold the dimensions ? How fast can a part be produced? In a majority of the cases, it depends on the cost at which the part can be produced. A large variety of shapes and sizes of a number of materials can be formed. However, the main requirement in this field of endeavor is whether this can be done more economically by powder metallurgy than by other manufacturing methods. As a general indication, it may be stated that densities up to 95 per cent of that of rolled material can now be produced commercially in simpler parts. Tolerances of plus or minus 0.001 in. are common, but where special conditions justify, closer tolerances can be held; we are producing a part of which one dimension is held to 0.0003 inch. Finally, as far as maximum size is concerned, technically this would depend on the capacity of the press and furnace equipment available. Actually, we find that the economical limit of powder-metallurgy machine parts is approximately one pound. From there on, each individual case must he studied on its own merits.

The purpose of the mill tests reported herein, was to determine the relative power efficiency of fast and slow rod mill speeds on the ores of the Tennessee Copper Co. The tests were carried out at the Isabella Mill of the Tennessee Copper Co. under normal operating conditions. Every effort was made to keep the ore supply and other conditions constant, but it will be noted that some slight variation did occur. The open circuit 6 by 9 rod mill, and ore, used in these tests have been previously described.&apos; Four motor drive pinions were available and the tests were performed in the following manner: each pinion was used to drive the mill for a period of one week. Constant sampling prevailed during the test run, and a composite sample for each speed test was made. Realizing that some slight liner wear took place during the four-week test-run, and that some slight variation of the ore may have taken place, a second and then a third series of four-week test-runs were made with the four different pinions. The screen analysis of each of the three-week run samples at the various speeds were composited and the results are shown in Table 2. The authors feel that the 22 weeks of operation consumed during these test-runs would represent fairly the effect of each mil1 speed. The data of line 37 show that within the error of sampling and plant operation, the tons of minus 65-mesh material generated per horsepower hour was the same at all four speeds. Obviously, rod and liner consumption could not be determined for each mill speed in so short a time. The rod load was maintained at a uniform level throughout the series of tests. The authors have operated rod mills at various speeds over the past several years, and it is their observation that rod consumption is directly proportional to the mill speed. Likewise, that the rod consumption per unit of work performed is a constant, providing that all other operating factors remain the same.
