Discussion of the paper of W. A. Forbes, presented at the New York Meeting, October, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 82, October, 1913, pp. 2477 to 2514.. SAMUEL K. VARNES,* Steelton, Pa.:-We have a gas-cleaning plant consisting of a, centrifugal dry dust catcher, and two rain-type wet scrubbing towers, 25 by 60 ft. each, for rough cleaning of blast-furnace gas. This plant was put in early in 1910, with the intention of cleaning gas for use in hot blast stoves and under boilers, and was so used for several months. Soon after it went into service, the blast-furnace men complained that they could not get as high blast temperatures as they had obtained when using dirty gas. It was decided to run a series of careful tests to determine if this were true and to what degree the apparent results might be affected by other conditions. About 60 tests were run, covering a period of five months, and at the end we came to the conclusion that it did not pay us to scrub the gas for stoves and boilers. The tests were all run upon a single stove, no boiler tests being made, but the conclusions of the stove tests being applied to the boilers. Total U.S. mineral production reached an estimated $17.8 billion for 1960, 4 pct above 1959 and second only to the record high of $18.1 billion established in 1957. As a group, metals achieved a rise from $1.6 billion in 1959 to $2.0 billion this year, an increase of 28 pct. Similarly the value of nonmetallic production including fuels (i.e., natural gas, petroleum, natural-gas liquids, asphalt and related bitumens, carbon dioxide. anthracite. bituminous and lignite coal, peat, and helium) rose from $15.5 billion in 1959 to approximately $15.8 billion in 1960. However, this 2 pct increase in the total value of non-metallic production was due to an increase in the value of the fuels ($11.8 billion in 1959 to $12.2 billion in 1960) which offset a drop in value of the other nonmetallic minerals ($3.7 billion in 1959 to $3.6 billion in 1960).

TWO technical sessions, an excursion through the Midwest refinery and a smoker, marked the first day of the meeting of the Petroleum Division at Casper, Wyo., on Aug. 28. Ninety-nine members and guests registered and there was an excellent attendance at 'all functions. The -local committee under the general chairmanship of J. C. Lindsay, general manager of the Western Pipe Line Co., had made every possible arrangement for the convenience and comfort of the visiting members and the Program Committee under E. L. Estabrook, vice-chairman of the Petroleum Division, had brought together a most interesting series of technical, papers. The meeting centered mainly on the various features of the Salt Creek field but there were also contributions from the technology of production in California, the Mid-Continent, and the Texas fields. The opening session was called to order by Mr. Estabrook at the Townsend Hotel on Friday morning. The members and visitors were welcomed appropriately by Ex-Governor B. B. Brooks, president of the "Rocky Mountain Oil and Gas Association, who recalled the changes that had taken place as Casper, a frontier cow town, became a thriving oil metropolis. F. Julius Fobs, chairman 'of the Petroleum Division, responded and then took the chair. He introduced H. Foster Bain, Secretary of the Institute, who expressed the regret of those members members who found it impossible to stop over en route to Salt Lake City and his own pleasure at meeting with the Division in the field. Following these introductory ceremonies the technical session began with a "Sketch of the Geological Formations of Central Wyoming," presented by J. G. Bartram of the Midwest staff. It was brief and to the point and contributed greatly to the easy under¬standing of the succeeding papers by those unfamiliar with the region. The talk was illustrated by a large scale columnar section -and a copy of the excellent, geological map of the State recently issued by the U. S. Geological Survey.

From the more distant members and some not so distant, the plaint is often heard that they cannot justify the expense and time required to attend the AIME Annual Meeting. Almost invariably, the reason given takes this form: "I just don't see that I would get enough out of it." Often the would-be clincher is added: "Besides, the meat of it all comes out in print anyway." Not long ago, a group of us who have seldom missed a meeting in recent years fell to discussing this phenomenon, and found ourselves in emphatic agreement that anyone holding such a belief indicates by his first remark that he does not know how to attend a convention, and by his second, proves it. He is, by and large, the man who has never been there, and of him, there are many.

The C. E. Weed concentrator treats 51,000 tons per day of 0.5% to 0.7% copper ore received from the Berkeley Pit, the Continental East Pit and the Butte underground mines. Improved operating techniques and conversion from semi-autogenous secondary grinding to ball milling have increased tonnage from an original design of 42,000 tpd. Separate treatment of sands and slimes, with recovery of soluble copper from the slimes, has increased total copper recovery. Concentrator tailings are pumped 600 vertical feet and 20,000 horizontal feet for disposal.

IT IS not necessary to travel hundreds of miles from New York City to see examples of modern mining methods applied in tunnel work. In the various subway jobs, for instance, underground work is done on so large a scale as to justify the oft-quoted remark that here is the world's greatest mining camp. In such cases, however, the size of the excavation makes wholly disproportionate comparison with the haulage drift or adit level of the West. But in West Orange, N. J., Antonio -DiMarco is driving a tunnel from two headings on opposite sides of First Mountain, under contract with the town of West Orange, which is similar in nearly every respect to the type of work that must be done at the mines, and merits description as an example of fast and economical tunnel driving under conditions commonly met with by the mining engineer in more inaccessible parts.

THE common method of shale mining, drilling, shooting and steam-shovel loading, is fast giving place to a comparatively new method which is purely mechanical. This machine is known as the shale planer and takes a cut from a very large face, 50 ft. or more in height. As shale deposits are usually stratified, the quality varying with the stratification, a very uniform product is obtained with this planer, for its "cut" is across the entire face, vertically. This planer was designed and built some 15 years ago by J. M. Powell, president of the Indiana Drain Tile Co., Brooklyn, Ind. Unevenness in mixing the material from the different layers in the shale deposit of this company was causing considerable fluctuation in the firing- shrinkage and color of the ware produced, thus lowering the quality. Some method of maintaining a uniform proportion was vital and this planer was therefore devised. Its capacity was approximately 175 tons daily: cut, mixed and loaded.

Description oF Costs ................... 64 Introduction We have endeavored in the following "sheets" to give the unit construction costs derived from 'the building of the Arizona Copper Co.'s new smelter, Clifton, Ariz., starting in February, 1912, and completing February, 1914.l In Chapter I—Unit Costs—are to be found the most elementary total unit costs which the accounts provide for. They are usable in the Clifton district. Here too are found the percentages to be added to an estimate for Engineering and General Expense. In Chapter II—Comparative Costs—these elementary costs have been classified, averaged and reported as labor and material unit costs. In such form the labor unit costs, when properly applied to similar conditions as these under which they were derived, are usable anywhere. The material unit costs are better disregarded for more accurate estimates and replaced by a newly priced bill of material. In Chapter III Composite Costs are given. Samples of silver and Ag-O alloy, 0.12 wl pet, have been undercooled to a maximum of 250°C by melting in a slag of commercial soda-lime glass. Grain refinement occurred in undercooled silver samples whet the degree of undercooling exceeded a critical value which varied from 153° to 175°C, depending on the melting conditions. In under cooled Ag-0 samples, the grain structure was fine and equiaxed at degrees of undercooling larger than 50oC. The grain refinement in both silver and Ag-0 alloy samples was the result of recrystallization during or immediately following freezing. When the oxygen content was increased, the degree of undercooling at which recrys-tallization occurred decreased. INVESTIGATIONS of the grain structure of strongly undercooled melts of nickel and cobalt1-4 have revealed a change in room-temperature grain size as a function of undercooling. At large degrees of undercooling the grain size was fine, but samples undercooled by smaller amounts exhibited a much coarser grain structure. The reported undercooling at which this grain size transition occurred in nickel varied between 140° and 175'C undercooling. Walker1 attributed this grain size change to an enhanced nuclea-tion rate. Cavitation at a melt-solid interface was con sidered to generate a high-pressure wave. This, in turn, produced nucleation in the liquid as a result of an elevated freezing point increasing the undercooling in the melt. A similar grain size transition was observed in undercooled silver between 133° and 153°C undercooling.5 The grain size transition in undercooled silver was found to be dependent on oxygen con tent. More recently, the authors5 showed that a simila transition occurred in an undercooled Cu-O alloy, =0.08 pet, but not in oxygen-free copper undercooled more than 200°C. The transition was attributed to recrystallization of the solidified grains after freezing; the greater the degree of undercooling, the more complete the recrystallization. In view of this effect of oxygen content on grain size transition, additional undercooling experiments were carried out with silver. This paper reports the results of these studies on silver and Ag-O alloys undercooled more than 50°C EXPERIMENTAL 1) Materials. The silver was supplied by Matthey Garrett Pty., Ltd., as fine granulate, silver mini' mum 99.9 pet, and contained the trace impurities shown in Table I. The silver originated from two different refineries resulting in the difference in impurity content shown in Table I. However, the variation in composition had no discernible effect on the undercooling behavior. Samples of the silver were melted in an open-ended, vertical, cylindrical resistance furnace, wound with Kantha] wire, the temperature of which was adjusted by means of a variable transformer, 2) Melting and Undercooling. Bulk samples of silver were undercooled by preoxidation and removal of oxidized impurities in a glass slag, as previously described,5 but special precautions were necessary to allow comparison between oxygen-free silver and a Ag-O alloy. Samples free of oxygen were prepared by first melting weights of granulate varying from 200 to 400 g in clean vitreous silica crucibles in air for approximately 15 min. A sample was frozen and a complete glass cover formed over the top surface by adding granulated glass rod. The sample was then melted and frozen several times until no oxygen bubbles appeared in the glass slag. Subsequent thermal analysis indicated that the oxygen content was negligible. The glass acted as an efficient barrier to absorption of oxygen from the air. Ag-O alloys were prepared by melting silver in silica crucibles with only a partial cover of glass, so that the top surface of the melt was in contact with air. The silver was held molten in air for several hours at 1000° to 1050°C, in the expectation that the oxygen in solution would reach equilibrium with atmospheric oxygen. At T - 1000°C the equilibrium oxygen content was calculated as 0.12 wt pet O, using Sieverts law and Eq, [l], derived by Mizikar et a!.7 from the data of Sieverts and Hagenacker8 for 1 atm of oxygen:
