The purpose of this investigation was to further study some of the factors affecting the air oxidation of sulfide minerals. Data obtained from laboratory studies on the effect of temperature, concentration of iron salts, pH, and other catalysts on the biological and nonbiological oxidation of sulfide minerals are presented. The oxidation of copper sulfide minerals and subsequent leaching of the soluble copper has long been a profitable operation. The chief oxidizing agent is oxygen from the air. This reaction is influenced by a number of different factors such as temperature, light, hydrogen ion concentration, oxidizing agents, and various catalysts. Sullivan1 found that copper sulfide minerals are slowly oxidized by the air and that dilute sulfuric acid and iron (111) increased their solubility. At that time it was not known that bacteria were involved in the oxidation of the sulfide minerals. It has been shown that pyrite, molybdenite, free sulfur, and the copper sulfide minerals found in the waste rock dumps in Bingham Canyon, Utah, are largely oxidized by chemosynthetic autotrophic microorganisms found in the leaching streams.2-6 Similar organisms have been isolated in other mining areas7,8 and from the effluents from coal rnines.9 The following are some of the questions that have arisen regarding the mechanisms of the reactions involved in the leaching process. How dependent is the leaching operation upon the biological reactions? How does the temperature effect the biological and non-biological reactions? How does the concentration of iron (II) and (111) effect the rate of oxidation of copper (II) sulfide? Does the iron act as a catalyst? Does activated carbon act as a catalyst on the oxidation of sulfide minerals? What effect does the hydrogen ion concentration (pH) have on the above reactions? The purpose of this paper is to report the results of laboratory studies on these problems. EXPERIMENTAL The apparatus used in this investigation was an air lift percolator described in our earlier work.' The percolator consisted essentially of an air lift which enabled the leaching solution and microorganisms to pass freely through a suspension of mineral (substrate) in Ottawa sand. The air lift served the additional purpose of maintaining an ample concentration of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the nutrient (leaching) solution. (See Fig. 1.) The percolators were so constructed that they could be immersed in liquid constant temperature baths for temperature studies. The thermostats were controlled to +0.5°C. The reactions were all run in the dark. The percolators were charged with one to three g of mineral, dispersed in 100 g of Ottawa sand and 100 ml of nutrient or leaching solution. The sand was purified to remove traces of iron by digesting with concentrated hydrochloric acid and washng with distilled water until free from chloride. After drying, the sand was ready for use. The compressed air supply was regulated to 5 psi and bubbled through an aerator containing distilled water, which was maintained at the same temperature as the bath used. ProUuction of crude oil in Venezuela increased from 186,134,000 bbl. in 1940 to 2~8,131,ooo bbl. in 1941, or 22.6 per cent, to establish a new all-time high for the country. While the average production for the year was 625,000 bbl. per day, production during the month of December 1941 averaged 751,000 bbl. per day, and during the last week of the year, 766,000 bbl. per day. Production from the Lake Maracaibo basin averaged 454,000 bbl. per day during the year, or 72 per cent of the total for the country, compared with 73 per cent of the total produced in 1940. Drilling during the year was approximately on the same scale as in 1940, with 438 wells completed in 1941 as compared with 429 the year before. Exploratory completions decreased from 18 in 1940 to 6 in 1941. Of the drilling operations in 1941, 56 per cent was concentrated in the Lake Maracaibo basin and 44 per cent in eastern Venezuela, success being 98 per cent in the Lake basin and 83 per cent in the east. Successful completions for the country as a whole amounted to 92 per cent of the total wells drilled. Exploratory drilling in 1941 resulted in the discovery of three new fields, all in eastern Venezuela; viz., Guara, about II km. to the northeast of the Oficina field but on a separate structure; Santa Rosa, which is east of El Roble field on a structure forming a part of the major Santa -Ana- San Joaquin-El Roble uplift; and Santa Barbara, which is southwest of the Jusepin field on an extension of the main Jusepin anticline. At the close of the year three wildcats were drilling, all of which showed prospects of obtaining production; that is, Mercedes No, 2 in central Guarico, Las Ollas No. I on the Anzoategui-Guarico border near the town of Zaraza, and Quiamare No. I in Anzoategui northeast of the town of San Mateo. In spite of heavy withdrawals and the resultant natural decline in the potentials of older producing areas, new drilling during the year increased the potential production of the country from an estimated 780,000 bbl. per day at the end of 1940 to an estimated 810,000 bbl. per day at the end of 1941, or approximately 4 per cent. Since domestic consumption of petroleum products is insignificant compared with total production, exports of crude and products during the year increased in line with production. Crude exports totaled 196,800,000 bbl., compared with 158,400,-000 bbl. in 1940, and exports of products were 26,100,000 bbl., compared with 21,900,000 bbl. the year before. Exports of crude from Venezuela to the United States amounted to 36,500,000 bbl. In addition, about 2,200,000 bbl. was imported in bond into the United States for transfer to Canada. Total refining capacity of the country in 1941 was approximately 125,000 bbl. per day, including a crude-conversion plant with a capacity of 32,000 bbl. per day, capable of making fuel oil only. DESTRUCTION of the plants, machines, utilities, tools, materials, and other essentials for peacetime living penalizes not only the owners of the materials destroyed, but the world as a whole. Specifically, the fundamental fallacy of any proposal for the in- discriminate destruction of the German industrial system is that it fails to differentiate between the wartime and the peacetime economy of the Reich. We are for one simple, clear objective-an effective industrial means to keep Germany from starting another war. This objective should not be con- fused, especially before the war is even won, with the appropriate punishment of Germany or with the international arrangements for the long future to be made around the peace table by the representatives of the Allied Nations after victory is achieved. This paper, therefore, does not deal with broad, complex postwar questions of diplomacy and international policy. "Unconditional surrender" implies disarmament of the German armies, the surrender of all arms, munitions, air- planes, and other ordnance material in stock piles or in process. It also should include the elimination of all German war production facilities, such as ordnance plants, munitions plants, and submarine works, and the control of raw materials required by war industries.

The obligation of an employer to the State requires certain things of him as matters of good citizenship: for instance, that his workmen shall have a living wage, that child labor shall not be employed, that injuries from accidents shall not make workmen a charge upon the State, and that the laborer's children shall have opportunity for education and to become good and useful citizens. Affairs of this kind are not taken up as philanthropy, for the officials of a corporation or a large manufacturing concern may not feel at liberty to spend the funds of their company as prompted simply by motives of kindliness; but they may spend company money on such matters because it is good business. For years, the poisonous effects of lead, phosphorus, and dust have been emphasized in books on industrial hygiene and their elimination has been urged; but the more important and everyday physiology of the workman himself has been neglected. Part of my object in writing this paper is to show how our knowledge of physiology may be applied to working conditions in everyday life. In the interest of industrial laborers, accident compensation laws have been enacted in 33 States. This has been carried forward rapidly, because it has been shown that it pays both employer and employee. A further step is the recognition of sickness and disablement independent of accidents, not only because of their immediate cost to the worker and to the employer, but because continued efficiency in work and business depends largely upon health. Some measure of the importance of health in industry can be gained by the knowledge that records kept by some companies which now make this the subject of careful inquiry show that the time lost by employees, through illness, is several times as much as that lost as the result of industrial accidents. It is true that accidents frequently result in permanent disability or death, but it is equally true that illness is also a cause of permanent disablement or death. Thus the chief difference is that the loss to the employee through accidents occurring in the course of his employment is now generally recognized as a cost

An aerial magnetometer survey was carried out by the author's geophysical organization over the Vredefort dome, where Witwatersrand beds are wrapped around a granite plug 25 to 30 miles in diameter. The well- known magnetic shales of the Lower Witwatersrand system (to be referred to as LWW) give strong negative anomalies over the out-cropping portion of the dome. This is unusual as these same shales -cause positive anomalies over large areas near Johannesburg and along a strike of 130 miles between the East Rand and Klerksdorp. It is suggested that the negative polarization is caused by heat and stresses connected with the doming. This negative polarization of sedimentary beds, which usually cause positive anomalies, is a good example of how "magnetic lows" can be caused by "structural highs." Significant magnetic anomalies should be tested by gravity and seismic methods irrespective of the sign of the anomalies.

I. SITUATION AND SURROUNDINGS. THE Promontorio mine is situated at the northern end of the Sierra San Francisco de Coneto, in the town of Promontorio, Partido of El Oro, State of Durango, Mexico. As shown in the sketch-map, Fig. 1, the nearest railroad station is Chinacates on the Mexican International Railroad, 82 miles north of the city of Durango. The mine is 16 miles north of the station by air-line. It is reached by means of a good wagon-road which first crosses the Guatimapé Plain, passing the ranches of San Antonio and San Julian, to Estacion-a distance of about 15.5 miles-and then entering the mountains crosses the Sierra to Promontorio-a further distance of 11.5 miles¬making in all a distance of 27 miles by road from railroad to mine. Promontorio is just beyond the summit of the range, at an elevation of about 8,000 ft. above sea-level, or 1,350 ft. above the Chinacates station. The Castillo de San Francisco, the highest peak in the Sierra, has an altitude of 10,000 ft., and the Promontorio road crosses the summit of the ridge at an elevation of 9,000 ft. by a pass just below this peak known as the Puerto del Almagre. The Promontorio mill is situated at Santa Ives, 2 miles by tram or 3 miles by wagon-road to the north of Promontorio and about 600 ft. lower. The Sierra San Francisco de Coneto decreases in height towards the north and west till it comes to an end at the Melchor Arroyo on the ranches of Melchor and Ramos. Beyond this arroyo another range, the Sierra de la Candela, begins. Since 1571, when the Institute was founded, many of the most important papers in the English language, on the various phases of mining and metallurgy, have appeared as Institute publications. As members of the Institute regularly receive the publications in which they are interested, this discussion is primarily for nonmembers who wish to know of them. The Institute has several means of issuing papers which have been submitted and accepted. The monthly journal, Mining and Metallurgy, is the magazine of the Institute. In it appear notices and reports of official business as well as many papers and contributions which do not appear otherwise. The annual subscription price of the magazine to nonmembers is $3 per year; Canadian and foreign postage $1 extra; single copies 50 cents; back issues $1 each. Many papers are published separately each year. They are issued in one or the other of two numbered series; namely, Technical Publications and Contributions, and of the latter there are four forms: Preprints, Mimeographs, Reprints, and Unpublished Manuscripts. A Technical Publication or Contribution (in any form) is issued by the Institute when it is listed in Mining and Metallurgy. Technical Publications are sent automatically to members who have asked in advance for papers on a given subject. All members are entitled to a copy of every paper in either series, except when a Contribution is an Unpublished Manuscript. Con¬tributions in the form of Unpublished Manuscripts are filed in the Engineering Societies Library and copies of some of these papers may be found in a few selected libraries throughout the country.

The Mn-Sn binary system, investigated at the high-manganese end and between 500° and 1000° C, shows four phases at temperatures below 727"C, namely the u Mn, the p Mn, the Mn3 Sn, and the Mn, Sn phases, while at higher temperatures only the last three phases remain stable. The solubility of tin in a Mn is very small and the maximum solubility of tin in P Mn phase appears to be abollt 10 at. pct Sn. The solubility range of the Mn,Sn and the Mn, Sn phases is 23.0 to 26.0 and 37.0 to 40.0 at. pct Sn, respectively. The lattice parameter of the 13 Mn phase increases with increasing tin content. The Mn, Sn thase is hexagonal with and appears to be basically of the Ni3 Sn type structure except that for quite a few X-ray diffraction lines the calculated and observed relative intensities do not agree well. The Mn-Sn binary system has been studied by several investigators.''~ Their results indicate that three intermediate phases, namely, the Mn3Sn, Mn,Sn, and MnSn, phases, exist at high concentrations of tin. However, so far the proper phase equilibrium has not been established at the manganese-rich end and very little data is available for the composition range between pure manganese and Mn3Sn. Moreover, earlier investigators differ in their opinion about the exact composition range at which the Mn3Sn and Mn,Sn phases appear and some doubt has been cast by some investigators3 regarding the structure of Mn3Sn phase which has been reported to be isotypic with Ni3Sn (Mgscd type) structure. In this investigation an attempt has been made to establish the proper phase equilibrium between pure manganese and Mn + 50 at. pct Sn composition in the temperature range of 500" to 1000°C. PROCEDURE The raw materials used were from three different sources. For exploratory work five alloys containing 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 at. pct Sn were prepared using 99.9 pct pure manganese and tin supplied by E. Merck & Co., Germany. The rest of the alloys and one more 25 at. pct Sn alloy were prepared using 99.9 pct Mn supplied by Gallard Schlesinger Chemical Mfg. Corp., U.S.A., and 99.999 pct Sn supplied by Semi Elements Inc., U.S.A. Weighed amounts of manganese and tin were melted in recrystallized alumina crucibles in an inert gas (argon) high-frequency induction melting furnace. By careful control of temperature and time of melting the losses were reduced to below 0.2 pct in all cases. Since the losses were very small, no attempt was made here to analyze the samples chemically. Alloys were wrapped in molybdenum foil and sealed in small evacuated fused silica capsules. The alloys were annealed at different temperatures, controlled within + l°C, for sufficiently long periods to attain proper phase equilibrium, and subsequently quenched in cold tap water. The annealing periods used at different temperatures were 15 days at 500°C, 7 days at 600°C, 5 days at 700" and 750°C, 3 days at 800°, 850°, and 900°C, 2 days at 968"C, and two alloys annealed at 968°C were reannealed for 10 hr at 1000° C. From each annealed specimen, a part was utilized for metallographic study while another piece was used for X-ray diffraction study. 1.0 pct HNO, solution and oxalic acid solutions of concentrations 0.05 to 1.0 pct were used for etching Mn-Sn alloys above and below the MnsSn composition, respectively. Since all alloys were brittle, X-ray specimens were prepared using the as-crushed -325 mesh alloy powders. Only one 25 at. pct Sn alloy powder was reannealed in an evacuated silica capsule at 800°C for 5 min and water-quenched. X-ray diffraction patterns . for the Mn3Sn phase with the as-crushed and the reannealed powders did not show appreciable change. Un-filtered iron radiation at 25 kv, 15 ma was used with either Norelco 114.6-mm-diam Debye Scherrer Camera (for phase identification) or Norelco 12-cm-diam symmetrical focusing camera (for lattice parameter determination of the 6 Mn phase). The estimated accuracy of lattice parameter determination for the focusing camera was * 0.001A. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS The results of metallographic and X-ray diffraction study made with different alloys are shown in Fig. 1. The variations in lattice parameter with composition for the p Mn and the Mn3Sn phases are given in Tables I and 11, respectively, and the lattice parameter as a function of composition for the p Mn phase is shown in Fig. 2. The lattice parameter of the p Mn phase increases with increasing tin content while for the Mn,Sn phase the data obtained from two two-phase alloys and one single-phase alloy indicate increase in a,, and decrease in c, parameters with increasing tin content. THE year 1929 was exceedingly busy and prosperous for the iron and steel industry in the United States. The lake shipments of ore were approximately 65,000,000 tons, steel ingots produced were about 57,000,000 tons. Plants were very active. operating for many months well over their rated capacity, slowing down during the last quarter following the severe break in the stock market. The ore tonnage mentioned above was the greatest ever shipped by lake from the Lake Superior region. The trend at the ore mines has been to supplement manual labor by mechanical appliances as much as possible. Mining methods have been greatly improved along the lines of safety as well as to increase the percentage of ore recovery. Crushing and grading of iron ores continued to gain in popularity inasmuch as remarkable blast-furnace operations and records were obtained with sizing and uniformity of raw materials. Progress was made along other lines. The Bradley process for the separation of manganese osicle and iron oside from siliceous manganiferous iron ore was cleuelopecl; also considerable work was clone on a process for the beneficiation of the Cuban laterite ores. Sintering of ores and concentrates increased in popularity. A new analytical method for the deter- mination of sulfur in iron ore was worked out which reduced the time required appreciably. The ore re- serves of the Lake Superior district continued to receive considerable attention and played an important part in the recent mergers which have taken place in the iron ancl steel industry.

Soviet industrial expansion depends on coal as a source of power and raw materials for the USSR's metallurgical and chemical industries. Knowledge of the Soviet Union's coal resources and production outlook is essential for a critical evaluation of the Soviet industrial potential. Although there is considerable literature on the Soviet coal industry, no single source provides an authoritative study of how the coal industry functions and how well it per- formed its job. Soviet reports are singularly lacking in the precise data in terms that are comprehensible to a westerner. It is essential, therefore, to clarify the terms in Soviet parlance. These terms are not comparable to those in common use in the West and are the cause of most inaccurate results. Official Soviet data on labor productivity refer to a limited group of "production workers" while in the West all wage earners are counted. Statistics are based on unprepared or run-of-mine coal, whereas it is customary elsewhere to measure productivity in terms of marketable coal. Thus, many western publications, while diligently and accurately reporting published Soviet data, overstate the case, presenting an exaggerated picture of Soviet progress in coal production and technology. (In terms of Western criteria, there is a three-fold exaggeration of labor productivity.)

WHEN so many statements are being made relative to the requirements of zinc metal, it is difficult for some of us who are acquainted with the industry to visualize how it is possible to step up production so as to supply some of the fantastic requirement figures that are published from time to time. I shall attempt to approach this subject from the standpoint of existing conditions which affect production, also keeping in mind the price ceiling under which the industry operates. Total production of primary and secondary zinc in the United States for 1941 will be about 878,000 tons, to which should be added about 36,000 tons of Mexican slab zinc available for consumption or export from the United States, giving a total available of 914,000 tons. Production of slab zinc of all grades in 1942 should be 953,000 tons. Adding the available Mexican supply should bring the total to 989,000 tons.

A successful surface coal operation requires the combined efforts of engineering and operating personnel. In the planning for a mine, machines should be selected to do the best work in getting the coal uncovered, loaded, and transported to the preparation plant. The best system and extent of cleaning will be determined by the market. After the fundamentals of operation have been established, the operating personnel should see they are carried out. There is no simple solution to some of the every day problems facing the operating officials. Here the production engineer with the technical approach, time studies, control methods, past experience, and available records can help in detecting causes of inefficient phases of the operations. With these studies, a careful analysis can be made in setting up the expected standards to be followed. Management can then compare the job under study with the standards and make corrections to solve the problems. 5.2-1. Annual or Daily Coal Production. Once the production cycle has been established, it is paramount that coal sales keep the productivity of the mine as high as possible. A successful company does this by what they call "the control approach." The daily tonnage report is one of the things that is a potent control tool in attaining the goals to be achieved. If production is falling short of the goal, the daily tonnage report will reveal what has to be done in the remaining days of the month or year to achieve the expected schedule. When goals are reached or exceeded, then budgeted tonnages and costs will be reached or exceeded and thus assure attainment of a profit. Failing to keep to the scheduled pace shows up quickly and prominently, facilitating any necessary action to get things back to the projected plans. ON THE occasion of the eightieth birthday of Captain Robert W. Hunt, the Iron and Steel Committee of the Institute, desiring to commemorate the great contributions made to the steel industry by Captain Hunt during his long career, conceived the idea of a Hunt Medal to be awarded annually by the Institute for meritorious contributions to the art of making steel. The project was received enthusiastically by all to whom it was proposed, especially by Captain Hunt's partners and employees who considered it their right, and asked for the privilege of -. - raising the necessary funds within their own circle. This was agreed to, and the Institute has received from them $7500 as an endowment fund to provide an annual award, and $1000 for the expenses of providing of medal.

Among the notable deposits of iron-ore, the Iron Mountain at Durango, Mexico, is prominent. But, although it has been noticed in records of travel and official reports for three centuries, the statements made concerning it have been so largely alloyed with improbabilities that general credence has not been given to data relating to the Cerro & Mercado, that being the name by which this remarkable mountain of ore is known. Location. Geographically, the mountain is centrally located, being situated immediately at the City of Durango, which is distant in direct lines (as the crow flies) as follows: From the Rio Grande River at El Paso, Texas, in the north, 510 miles; from the same stream at Laredo, Texas, in the northeast, 410 miles; from Tampico, in the east, 475 miles; from the City of Mexico in the southeast, 520 miles; from Mazatlan in the west, 110 miles. At El Paso, the standard-gauge Mexican Central Railroad, and at Laredo, the narrow-gauge Mexican National Railroad, enter Mexico. Tampico is a prominent Mexican port on the Gulf of Mexico, and Mazatlan occupies a similar position on the Gulf of California. THE recently discovered occurrence of diamonds near Murfreesboro, Pike county, Ark., was brought to. our attention by Mr. Samuel W. Reyburn (Trustee for Messrs. C. S. Stifft, A. D. Cohn, August Zinsser, Jr., and himself, owners of the property), through whose courtesy we investigated the locality of the deposit. Prospecting with the diamond-drill is now in active progress ; but mining operations on a large scale have not yet been ordered. Geology.-The geology as well as the petrography of this interesting locality has been well described by Messrs. J. C. Branner and R. N. Brackett.1 Briefly summarized, the igneous rock in which the diamonds are found is a vitreous peridotite, forming a stock or volcanic neck, which has broken up through the Carboniferous and Cretaceous quartzites and sandstones. After an extensive period of erosion, during which an unknown portion of the neck and presumably a previously existent volcanic cone have been removed, the surface was covered with thin beds of Post-Tertiary conglomerate. The volcanic intrusion was accompanied by the formation of several small dikes of a rock much like that of the main body. One of these dikes cuts across the stock, while another cuts the Cretaceous sandstone, but is overlain by the conglomerate, thus giving a datum for the period of intrusion. So far as known, there was little, if any, metamorphism of the country-rock by the igneous magna, which probably followed an approximately vertical course, so that a more or less vertical extension downward of the igneous body to indefinite depths may be expected.

A SIDE from the technical sessions held as noted elsewhere, the chairman of the various sub-committees of the Mining Methods Committee, together with a few other specialists, were invited to a conference with President Bradley, which was held on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 20. The general plan of a comprehensive series of comparable papers descriptive of mining practice in various parts of the country, launched by this committee some seven years ago having been adopted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the feeling was general that the Committee could safely 1eave.that part of its work in these capable hands and turn its attention to other matters. The plans of the Bureau were presented as below by Charles William Wright of the Bureau.

Since our last review of Iraq,' considerable progress has been made not only in exploiting Iraq's potential resources but in building pipe lines to carry the oil to the Mediterranean. No new fields were discovered in 1933. The Naft Khaneh field, discovered in early 1927 by the Khaniqin Oil Co. (subsidiary of the Anglo-Persian Oil Co.), continues to supply the local markets through the Rafidain Oil Co. Kirkuk field, discovered by the Turkish Petroleum Co. Oct. 14, 1927, remained shut in pending the completion of the Mediterranean pipe lines, and the Qaiyarah field, discovered by the same company on Oct. 13,1927, was abandoned in 1928. The principal development of interest during the year was the progress made on construction of the Iraq Petroleum Company's 1152-mile pipe line from Kirkuk to the Mediterranean. The line is double 10-in. and 12-in. pipe for 156 miles west of Kirkuk, where the parallel lines bifurcate, one leg going through British mandated territory to the new port of Haifa and the other through French mandated Syria to Tripoli. Each line may be operated independently of the other. There are three double stations on the Kirkuk-Haditha portion, four single stations on the Tripoli leg, and five on the Haifa in addition to a relief station in the Jordan Valley. Except for the Jordan Valley section and two other short stretches on the Haifa leg where pressures are exceptionally high, the line is single. Sea loading lines will be used exclusively at Tripoli and both sea loading lines and dock loading will be employed at Haifa. All pipe was welded and buried before the end of December, 1933. It is anticipated that enough stations will be completed to make 50 per cent capacity operation possible some time during the latter half of the current year. Some months will then be required in which to fill the line, so that if terminal facilities are ready and no unexpected emergencies arise, partial daily deliveries of Iraq crude may be received at the Mediterranean some time during the final quarter of the current year. Capacity operation of 84,000 bbl. per day is not anticipated much before the middle of 1935.
