FATE, rather than planning, put Bob Morris into coal mining. He was a farmer's son, born at Plattsburg, Ohio, just 68 years ago (Feb. 28, 1878) though he could easily pass for ten years younger. Before he was ready for high school the family moved to Columbus, seat of Ohio State University, whose course in mining engineering attracted him because lie thought it the broadest of the engineering courses. He really wanted to be a steel metallurgist but it was a coal-mining company that offered him a job when he graduated, and this circumstance directed his entire future professional life. To. be sure it wasn't such a glorious opportunity so far as pay went -$40 a month-but his employer, the Modoc Coal & Mining Co., Modoc, Ohio, was developing a new shaft mine, thus offering some good experience. In 1902, after a year's experience, he was made superintendent of the property. Then in 1903 the Continental Coal Co. at Glouster, Ohio, offered him a better job as their chief engineer, which he retained until 1905, at the same time joining the A.I.M.E.

TYPES OF WET DUST COLLECTORS Basically, there are two types of wettype dust collectors. One is mechanical, incorporating pumps, motors, fans, sprays, filters, or flooded beds. These come in many forms, but their operating principle is basically the same. The screen or flooded bed is wetted by a series of sprays. Polluted air is drawn in through a fan; here the dust particles impinge on the screen and are flushed off into a settlement tank. The air then passes through spray eliminators to the atmosphere. A great deal of time and money has been spent developing this type of collector. In laboratory tests where clean water at constant pressure, air at constant volume, and dust at low but constant mass to volume were applied, these collectors gave high percentage dust collection efficiencies. Theoretically and technically, they are very good. In practice, however, under rugged mining conditions where there are no constants, and dust load, particle size, water pressure, and volume of air vary with time, their efficiency varies dramatically. Some of the most common problems are: 1. clogging of screens 2. blocking of nozzles 3. replacement. of damaged pump stators Any of the above result in loss of air flow and dust collection efficiency. Generally, there are so many mechanical moving parts, something is always breaking down. This type of collector is very expensive in parts and labor to maintain. The second type of dust collector, which I personally developed, with the help of the British National Coal Board of Great Britain, has none of the above mentioned problems and it works on a completely different principle. My collector, the Mark III Precipitaire Wet-Type Dust Collector, (an improved version of previously successful models) has no internal moving parts, no flooded beds, screens, spray nozzles, etc. It is highly efficient - 99.8% efficiency on total collected dust and 97% on respirable dust. The pressure drop through the collector is constant, hence, air flow remains constant. There is no maintenance expenditure, be it labor or parts. The only maintenance that there is, is desludging. This, of course, varies with the dust load. With a low dust load, desludqinq may only be required every 4 weeks, but this is a very simple operation that can be handled by unskilled men and it takes only a very short time. My collector is powered by a ventilation fan that is placed on the clean air side for a longer fan and motor life. Dust is extracted solely by water action. The collector's operating principle is: Dust laden air is drawn in along ducting into a tapered scrubber section, shaped to create a self-induced curtain of water. This action washes the dust particles from the air and the collected dust settles into the bottom of the tank. Cleaned air is then exhausted via a series of spray eliminators where it is completely dried and on into the atmosphere. These collectors have been sold in Great Britain, to the National Coal Board, and throughout Europe. They have been working very well for many years now. GENERAL APPLICATIONS Dust is very dangerous; silicosis and black lung kill and disable many workers each year. Many of the mine explosions can be attributed to coal dust. By the use and application of dust collectors, these deaths and disasters can be avoided. There really is no excuse. However good and efficient a dust collector may be, it's positioning and installation arrangement is critical. The collector may remove 99% of dust supplied to it, but it takes the skill and experience of a dust control engineer to design and fit ducting, hoods, etc. to remove polluted air at source and deliver it to the collector. In some cases this is very simple; in the case of longwall machines, it is very difficult. In general, dust collectors should be used to collect dust at every point of dust generation. I have noted a great reliance on dilution as a means of dust control. I personally think this is a dangerous and unreliable method. As mines become deeper and the use of larger and more productive equipment becomes more common, reliance on dilution will be impossible and dust collectors will be essential.

Recrystallization textures—thc orientations of grains after recrys-tallization—have been studied extensively not only because of their metallurgical importance but also because of the information they yield regarding the atomic movements during reerystallization. Recrystallized grains must possess the same orientations as the submicroscopic nuclei from which they have grown, and thus they offer a direet road by which experimenters can penetrate the submicroscopic realm. Many perplexing results have come of these studies, but one of the most striking has been the apparent difference in behavior between single crystals and polyerystalline grains. For example, Burgers and Louwerse have shown1 that when single crystals of aluminum are deformed by compression and are reerystallized (at 600' C.) the new grains appear with orientations that are different from the orientations of the deformed crystal in which they grew; but polycrystalline specimens, on the other hand, appear to have a [110] fiber texture both before and after reerystallization and thus to retain their texture during recrystallization. This apparent difference between the habits of single crystals and small grains is the subject of the first part of the present research and has been explained by findings reported herein. A similar situation appears to exist for aluminum when elongated or drawn into wires, for single crystals alter their orientation 2,3 and polycrystalline wires retain their texture"5*" upon recrystallization after elongation (at least with high-purity aluminum), and it is possible that the explanation found in this paper for compression can be extended to cover elongatioil and other types of deformation as well. The second part of this paper deals with the theory of reerystallization textures. In the most successful theory for aluminum reerystallized after compression,1 much weight is given to the orientation of highly stressed nuclei in the deformed material. Taylor's "local distortions" arc assumed to exist along the slip planes where displacement has occurred, consisting of fragments rotated in a specific way with reference to the slip plane and slip direction; namely, about an axis lying in the slip plane perpendicular to the slip direction.1,7,89

Flotation and adsorption studies of ilmenite with technical oleic acid, pure oleic acid, and mixtures of each of them with n-hexadecane have been conducted. From them it is concluded that the depression of ilmenite caused by a too long conditioning time is due to adsorption of the collector onto the fines produced by attrition in the conditioning cell, and that fuel oil is necessary for economic flotation of non-deslimed ilmenite ore. This beneficial effect of fuel oil is attributed to van der Waals forces, of the hydro-carbon chains.

A model of the fully-loaded condition of particle accumulation on the matrix of a high gradient magnetic separator is developed. The model accurately predicts the build-up profiles reported recently by Friedlaender et al. A powerful development from the model is that loading (volume of accumulated material per unit volume of matrix) is uniquely defined by a dimensionless group, called the loading number, NL. From direct measurements, NL proved superior to the dimensionless group proposed by Watson as a measure of loading. The fine size limit of hematite recovery is examined using NL.

A sumMary of the consumption of coal in 1945 shows that the coke industry ac-counted for 17 pct of the total coal used. No substitute for coke and the blast furnace in the reduction of iron ore has gained sufficient prominence so far to be given serious consideration. However, while the same slot-type ovens are being built and used now as were in use a few years ago, the problem of obtaining suitable coking coals, both high- and low-volatile, has forced many operators to revamp coal-blending facilities. Until the beginning of World War 11, high-temperature ooke plants were able to secure the required high-volatile and low-volatile coals from two or three seams and from three or four mines. Thus, many of our coke oven plants were able to operate with storage bins for two coals only. The vari-pnce in raw materials was not great, and uniformity of blend was a relatively simple problem. Since the beginning of World War 11, many and important changes have taken place. Demand for all coals increased greatly. Production, though kept as near maximum capacity as possible, could not meet the demands for coal generally, and particularly for the various kinds of coal which have proved to be satisfactory for specialized uses; coals were allocated as nearly as possible in the order of greatest need; storage piling was reduced to the minimum necessary to keep plants in operation; uniformity of quality could not be maintained, and with this last, uniformity of composition of blends for coking could not be maintained. Whereas before the war producers of metallurgical coke could fill their needs from three or four mines, by the end of the war it was not unusual to find shipments to a single coke oven plant coming from as many as 30 different mines, in a single month. Since many of the mines producing both high- and low-volatile coal for high-grade metallurgical coke are rapidly nearing de-pletion, the problem of seeking new sources and of blending a number of coals in each plant for the production of high-temperature coke is facing practically every producer in the United States at the present time, and is one which will probably continue for many years to come. Midwestern byproduct coke ovens in the Chicago and St. Louis areas use annually from 12 to 15 million tons of bituminous coals which are transported 500 to 700 miles from the Appalachian coal fields of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and eastern Kentucky. Approximately two-thirds of this coal is high-volatile bituminous. The critical transportation problem confronting the nation in 1943, and the growing scarcity of the best Appalachian coking coals, prompted the Illinois Geological Survey to propose a research program in which would be studied the coking properties of blends of low-sulphur, high-volatile Illinois coal with the high- and low-volatile coals from the eastern fields. The Bradford field of northwestern Pennsylvania and adjacent portions of New York state has attracted world-wide attention in recent years on account of the remarkable success that has been attained in the application of water-flooding as a means of increasing the extraction of oil from a pool that had almost reached the economic limit by ordinary production methods. It is one of the few large oil fields in which artificially conducted water drives have thus far proved successful, although many attempts have been made to apply them elsewhere. As detailed a knowledge as possible of the character of the producing sand in this field is therefore of considerable interest, not only from a scientific but also from a practical standpoint. Outside the Bradford field, such knowledge should aid operators in determining whether or not their sands are amenable to flooding. In the Bradford field itself flooding operations are not uniformly successful over the approximately 85,000 acres of productive area, due in many instances primarily to variations in sand conditions. A knowledge of just what these variations are would often be a great aid in overcoming the difficulties, or else would save considerable sums of money which might otherwise be wasted in experimenting in areas where the chances of success are very small. Realizing that more precise information in regard to the nature of the reservoir rock was essential to improvements in the methods of oil recovery, the Northwestern Pennsylvania Oil Producers Assn., by private subscription of its members, took a core of the Bradford sand from a well 1/2 mile west of Custer City, Pa., during the spring of 1925. The Forest Oil Co. also took a core of the same sand from a well about 8 miles east of Bradford at that time. The cores were submitted to the United States Geological Survey for study and A. F. Melcherl has published the results of porosity determinations on the Custer City core.

Instrumentation is not a stranger to the minerals processing industry. In fact, very few plants now exist that haven't to one extent or another adapted operations to instrumentation. But with the rapid growth of such controls has come the need for effective departments composed of men trained to maintain and repair the instruments; here is where many firms fall short. The importance of the role an instrument department should play is underscored by the omnipotent effects which instruments often exert over an operation. Reserve Mining Co. is an example: while instrumentation at this taconite plant represents approximately 2% of the process equipment cost, a breakdown of instruments may result in the ineffective use (or complete shut-down) of the other 98% of plant investment.

Commencing in 1922, each year a lecture has been presented to the Institute of Metals Division at this February meeting. The range of subjects has been very- broad. Some speakers have dealt with the most advanced work in the very heart of the science of physical metallurgy. Others have stimulated our imaginations by discussing the most recent progress in related fields of science. Others have told us of the latest art, which is at any moment of greater practical importance than the latest science, of metals. I feel that this broad precedent in the choice of subjects will justify my choosing to talk about some of the prosaic details of how, during the last generation, industry has effectively organized research to accelerate progress in our own and all other fields of science and related art. A number of years ago I visited one of this country's well-known research laboratories and had the pleasure of chatting for a few minutes with its equally well-known director. Being particularly interested at the time in the organization problems connected with industrial research, I broached that subject. My host stated in effect that he didn't believe in organized research. He was, of course, resorting to a rhetorical hyperbole. to pain: out the danger of overorganization which can so easily drift into regimentation and destroy individual initiative. Actually nearly all of us, much as we cherish our personal freedom of action, believe in organization because the history of progress in every field of human activity has been a history of men learning to work together, to cooperate, to create an efficient division of labor. We use organization to achieve this coordination. At the same time our form of organization must not stifle individual initiative or it will prove a deterrent rather than an aid to accomplishment. Research, too, must be organized for greatest achievement but especial skill and care are perhaps needed to avoid stifling the initiative of the individual workers. I have, of course, followed with keen interest and much benefit the vast amount . that has been said and written on this subject in the past twenty years but I still find new stimulation in discussions with my good friends working in this field. It is my hope that this discussion may serve a like purpose. It would be ungracious not to make due acknowledgment to the many able contributors to this particular phase of human progress, but their very number and the great volume of their writing makes it impossible to trace to any one individual a particular significant and valuable idea. I shall content myself therefore with this general acknowledgment and with acknowledgment of the specific debt that every research man owes to those who have so ably kept before the public, and in particular before industrial executives, the place of research in the modern scheme of things' Because of the legitimate publicity thus given to research, the day is past when any

PREPARATION CONTROL IN UNDERGROUND MINING Selective Mining According to district Depending upon the particular geographic location or seam characteristics modem raw coal preparation practices can be used to obtain improved product quality and uniformity. Nevertheless, certain coal markets may require only marginal quality while others may require very high quality and these objectives may be sought by commencing the preparation of coal underground at the "working face." Underground preparation involves choosing those portions of the bed which can be cleaned to satisfy predetermined market requirements involving (1 ) maintenance of uniformity in chemical quality, (2) elimination of removable impurities, (3) control of sizes and size ratios and (4) control of moisture. The methods employed to attain these objectives vary widely with the (1) seam under development, (2) mining equipment available and (3) changing trends in the consuming markets. When a mining property is opened and development progresses from one section to another the (1) petrography of the coal in the bed does not re- main uniform, (2) character of roof and floor are subject to change and (3) character and prevalence of mineral impurities are subject to considerable variation. The quality of coal shipped to market from any mine depends upon intelligent foresight, planning, execution and supervision. Mining becomes a highly technical art. The quality of coal as determined by chemical and petrographic analysis is without question one of the most important considerations in the development and life of any coal-mining property. Variations in such proper- ties as volatile matter, ash, sulfur, Btu content and petrography are of considerable interest and to a limited extent so are such properties as phosphorous content, free swelling index, plasticity, hardness, pressure formation during coking and ash composition. The maximum and minimum specifications of these characteristics as established by competitive market conditions place definite limits on the marketability of a coal. The prospecting and evaluation of any area containing one or more salable coal beds by means of channel samples taken from outcrop openings and/or from diamond-drill cores can yield valuable data on coal characteristics. By correlating the data developed from distinct petrographic sections of channel and/or drill core samples, the quality of the bed according to stratification will be evident. There are few coal beds that do not show wide variations of such characteristics as ash and sulfur

A locked-cycle balling procedure has been designed to simulate continuous, closed- circuit balling drum operation in the laboratory. By this method, it is possible to simulate the surging in green-ball production rate and circulating load that is experienced in industrial balling circuits. Through an investigation of the effect of feed rate on the stability of the locked-cycle, balling process, it was found that higher feed rates lead to increasing instability in the process. An analysis of the experimental ,results is presented and the utility of the locked-cycle experimental technique for evaluating the stability of an industrial balling drum operation is discussed.

THE melting point of molybdenum is 2625° ± 50°C. Heretofore the metal has been considered too refractory to be melted in commercial quantities; hence, it has been formed into rod, wire, and sheet by the methods of powder metallurgy, wherein the temperatures do not exceed 90 per cent of the melting temperature. The manipulation of liquid metals at temperatures of about 2000°C. and above presents some difficult problems in heat transfer, in purification, and in container materials. For metals melting at such high temperatures, it is generally regarded as expedient to circumvent the more common melting and casting process by resorting to powder metallurgy. This circumvention is not accomplished without some penalties, the more notable of which are the relatively high cost of the powder metallurgy method and particularly the size limitations of its product. In an effort to overcome the inherent disadvantages of the powder metallurgy method, especially in respect to the limit of size, a project was begun in 1943 at the Climax Molybdenum Co. laboratory to develop a method of melting and casting molybdenum capable of producing larger bodies of molybdenum than were then obtainable. Later, from Feb. 1, 1944, to Aug. 31, 1945, the project was under the supervision of the National Defense Research Committee, Division One. In peacetime, too, there are needs for molybdenum, which make consideration of another process desirable; for example, large parts for heat engines generally, the omnipresent demand for metal of higher quality and lower cost, and the development of molybdenum-base alloys. This paper describes methods for melting and casting molybdenum, with details of the special process needed to make molybdenum castings ductile, and reports some of the properties of what may be regarded as a new, or at least modified, form of the metal. FIRST PROCESS FOR MELTING AND CASTING MOLYBDENUM The maintenance of a temperature greater than 2625°C. in a space large enough to melt several pounds of molybdenum may involve the loss of heat at a very considerable rate. For melting molybdenum, therefore, the source of heat must be of high potential and of fairly high power. Evidently, also, the source of heat must not impair the purity of the product. The electric arc operating in vacuum appeared to meet these requirements and was accordingly the first choice as a source of energy. A number of arc devices for melting molybdenum were examined, and several were tried. In the first experiment, a 20-kw., 60-cycle-per-second alternating-current arc was operated between two horizontal and opposed electrodes of molybdenum. In this arrangement the falling droplets of molybdenum solidified below the arc in an irregular mass. This experiment did not produce a useful casting, but the data obtained indicated that

IT is recognized that ingot structure is important in determining the quality of finished steel. Such elements of ingot structure as the size, shape and distribution of primary crystals; the size, shape and distribution of shrinkage cavities; the degree and kind of segregation (both macro and micro); the distribution of nonmetallic impurities and gas cavities are each the result of solidification phenomena. These structural features vary with variations in ingot practice: Their control requires a knowledge of their correlation with the variables of ingot practice. The structures of full-sized commercial steel ingots have been studied extensively by the Steel Ingots Committee of the Iron and Steel Institute.1 This work has contributed much to our knowledge of ingot structure and the factors that control it. These investigations of necessity have been limited in scope because of their costliness and the great amount of time required. Studies of the structure of small steel ingots have not been very satisfactory because of the rapid rate of freezing of the ingots. Their structures are thus difficult to resolve and to interpret. Medium sizes of steel ingots in the ranges of 150 to 500 lb. do offer opportunity for study, but their cost also becomes greater and their use less expeditious. Experimental models for the study of steel-ingot structure have been made of nonferrous metals. Gathmann2 used lead-tin alloys and reported that they were satisfactory for determination of the location of the major shrinkage cavities and the "planes of weakness" resulting from the pattern of crystallization. Certain features of mold design have been illustrated by these results. Bezdenezhnihk3 has used copper and aluminum ingots similarly and has shown the effect of mold-wall thickness on the depth of columnar grains. These studies of nonferrous models have been useful, but their results have been limited because the analogy with steel ingots obviously is not a close one. Model wax ingots have also been useful in pointing out important features of mold design. Gathmann4 watched the solidification of wax ingots, through a glass-walled mold, and has reported the effects of mold type on the location of the shrinkage cavities. Segregation was simulated by using a mixture of paraffin and stearine and adding a red dye that on freezing segregated preferentially to the stearine. Brearley5 also used wax models to determine .the effects of some of the principal features of mold design. Carlsson and Hultgren6 used stearic acid to show that the columnar crystals of ingots tend to slope upward progressively from the mold wall toward the center of the ingot. The decline in deliverability of conventional natural gas supplies and the general energy crisis have resulted in national programs directed toward the commercialization of energy conversion technologies. Foremost among these efforts is the gasification of coal. Coal reserves represent our most abundant fossil fuel resource. Its utilization is hampered both by its form value and its pollution qualities. Coal gasification is commercially feasible today and projects requiring hundreds of millions of dollars and years of construction time are underway. This paper provides a perspective for the scope, time, and cost of these venture projects. Resource requirements, plant products, and coal gasification processes are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the effects of coal feedstock and prices on plant economics.

THE problem of strata control has of necessity been prominent in mining, and accounts of individual experience and research abound in the literature of most mining countries. Organized research began in Britain by the formation of a committee, upon the recommendation of the Safety in Mines Research Board in 1923, to investigate methods of reducing accidents from falls of roof in coal mines. This committee examined current practice in supporting underground workings in the principal coal fields, and its findings have been published in the Board's publications. Toward the end of these investigations it was suggested by the Chief Inspector of Mines that committees of the several mining institutes be formed to examine the problem in their respective districts. The formation of these committees marked a new phase in research on strata control. The work, though being done in the separate coal fields, followed a scheme outlined by the Chief Mining Engineer of the Research Board, and was coordi¬nated by his office. FACTORS INVOLVED The subject is being considered in Britain from two aspects: I. To provide, by supports, means to prevent falls of fractured ground. 2. To develop methods whereby the strata can be maintained in the least broken condition and thus make falls less likely. The first aspect is the one that will most likely lead to immediate results from the accident standpoint. It depends largely upon the assimilation of already acquired knowledge regarding the proper¬ties of supports and their correct applica¬tion. The second aspect is perhaps more fundamental, and involves also the proper¬ties of the strata and their behavior under the influence of the forces induced by mining. The problem involves many natural factors that cannot be controlled, such as depth, inclination and thickness of seam and nature of the rocks. Other factors, which may be considered to a certain extent controllable, cannot be varied readily and with sufficient fre¬quency to facilitate easy investigation; some of these are: rate of advance of the working face, length of face, direction of the face with regard to cleat and inclination, system and arrangements of rock packing behind longwall faces. In any given case the very many factors present have a mutual influence upon the effects produced in the mine. For example, a study of the effects of rate of advance cannot be done without considering the effects of other factors such as nature of strata, direction of face and quality and arrangement of supports. Oil and gas activities in Indiana during 1943 continued to decline at about the same rate as in 1942. New development, production, and prospecting, all showed the results of Federal regulation, low price for crude oil and shortages of labor and materials. Several local stripper-well operations were shut down, but no large-scale abandonment has occurred as yet. During the year, 277 holes were drilled for oil and/or gas, of which 99 were completed as oil wells, 19 as gas wells and 159 as dry holes. This record was a decline of 21 per cent over last year in the total number of completed tests, 20 per cent in the number of oil wells and 9.5 per cent in the number of gas wells. As in the previous year, most of the drilling (82 per cent) was in the southwestern part of the state, Gibson County ranking first, with 77 completions and 49 oil wells. Posey County was second, with 59 completions and 20 oil wells. The remaining 18 per cent of the drilling was in the old Trenton oil and gas area. The total footage drilled during the year was 482,799 ft., a decline of 18 per cent from the previous year. Of this, 146,559 ft. was wildcat footage. The total initial production of the oil wells completed was 6362 bbl. and of the gas wells was 2,562,000 cu. feet. Three tests in the old Trenton area were drilled into the Cambrian and reported nothing more than tar residue. A Devonian test was to be made in the Griffin field in the Wabash River but owing to the delay caused by Federal restrictions this test did not get started in 1943. It is expected to spud in March 1944. The new discoveries in 1943 were virtually all in the southwestern part of the state, and all, so far, one-well pools, except the North Owensville pool, in Gibson County. The latter was brought in during the month of February and by the end of the year nine wells were producing in the pool, with a reported initial yield of 1260 bbl. per day. By the end of the year it had a daily average production of 401 bbl. and an accumulated production of 39,129 bbl. The average gravity of the oil is reported to be 35.6. On the Ohio-Indiana state line, early in 1943, a new pool was opened up in the old Trenton area. The discovery well was on the Ohio side of the line. An offset well was completed on the Indiana side, with an initial yield of 64 bbl., and settled down to 5 bbl. per day. This well produced 1154 bbl. up to Dec. 31, 1943. There was no further development here, because of the Federal Conservation Order M-68, restricting drilling to one well on 40 acres. The development pattern usually followed in this area is one well to 5 acres. The E. Rogers field was extended by one pool (Table 4). Most of the development in the oil-field pools during the year took place in the Kirksville pool, in Gibson County, and the Caborn pool, in Posey County. After a few percent strain, dislocations in disordered Cu3Au are arranged in groups in ulell-defined slip planes, which contrasts with the more or less random distribution of dislocations in the corresponding ordered alloy. Unusually long and straigkt dislocation segments observed in the ordered alloy are interpreted in terms of cross slip of screw dislocations from their slip planes into cube planes. It is proposed that cross slip, and also dislocation reactions of the Lomer type, play an important role in work hardening of the ordered alloy. ACCORDING to to dislocations in the disordered lattice are only partial dislocations in the corresponding super lattice, so that in the super-lattice dislocations must occur as pairs, with each pair connected by a ribbon of antiphase boundary. Recently, striking confirmation of the theory was obtained by Marcinkowski, Brown, and Fisher3j4 in a study of dislocation configurations in thin foils of the Cu3Au alloy by transmission electron microscopy. In the present investigation, the observations made by these workers have largely been confirmed. Moreover, it has been found that dislocations in the plastically deformed ordered alloys are often unusually long and straight. This paper is mainly concerned with these new observations. A tentative explanation is offered in terms of cross slip of dislocations in the ordered alloys. PREPARATION OF SPECIMENS An alloy close to the stoichiometric composition Cu3Au was prepared by melting together high-purity copper and gold (99.995 pct) under vacuum in a graphite mold. The resulting ingot was rolled down and cut into strips 1 1/2 by 1/8 by 0.005 in. in thickness. All strips were annealed at 900°C for 3 hr and cooled to 500'~. A few of the strips were quenched from ~OO'C, while the remainder were slowly cooled in the temperature range 400" to 150°C at intervals of a few degrees every 24 hr to produce a high degree of order. After this annealing treatment the average grain size of the material was about 0.1 mm. Material in different states of order was obtained by reannealing fully ordered material at temperatures below the critical temperature: followed by quenching. The equilibrium degree of order attained at a particular reannealing temperature was obtained from the paper by Keating and warren.' A simple hand-operated tensile jig was used to give the strips the required amounts of plastic strain. Following straining, a number of specimens were cut from each strip by means of an electrolytic cutting device.= Finally, each specimen was thinned electrolytically using the polishing procedure described by Bakish and Robertson,7 and these thin sections were examined in the Philips EM-100B electron microscope operating at 100 kv. EXPERIMENTAL OBSERVATIONS Antiphase boundaries. The average domain size in the ordered alloys was found by direct observation to be about 0.25 p. Also, it was observed that the grown-in configuration of antiphase boundaries was changed little by plastic deformation, at least up to 6 pct strain. Fig. 1 shows an electron micrograph of a thin foil of partially ordered alloy (S - 0.8) after 3 pct strain. The micrograph shows a few dislocation pairs and a somewhat crystallo-graphic network of antiphase boundaries.
