The following correspondence relating to a paper bearing the above title, presented by J. F. Wolff, at the New York meeting in February, 1917, and published in the Transactions, Volume LVI, page 142, has passed between the author of the paper, and Mr. Anson G. Betts, and is interesting, although it was received much too late for incorporation in its proper place in Volume LVI. Anson G. Betts, Asheville, N. C.—1. I should like to ask Mr. Wolff if he finds from analysis of the iron formation and of the iron ore, and from the relative amounts of each in each unit area of the formation, unleached and after leaching, that the iron remains entirely insoluble and the total quantity still remains present; or whether he finds that some of the iron is removed, or possibly even added by deposition from the water passing through the formation. 2. The water that passed into the iron formation had to go somewhere; was it absorbed by underlying formations through hydration, or, after passing through the ore formation, did it come to the surface in springs at a lower elevation, or how did it escape from the ground? 3. I should like to ask Mr. Wolff whether he finds that the iron formation in the sedimentary series does not come next to the quartzites and generally between the quartzites and slates. J. I?. Wolff, Duluth, Minn.—1. In common with others, you appear to have some hesitancy in accepting the fact of the removal, by solution, of the enormous quantity of silica which has been leached out of portions of the Biwabik iron formation, thus forming orebodies of merchantable iron ore. I believe that even Dr. Waldemar Lindgren once hesitated to accept this fact. However, the evidence is so simple and absolutely conclusive that the fact is established beyond all question. At the contact of orebodies with their rock walls, the bands of iron ore in the orebody can be seen in contact with the corresponding bands of original iron oxide in the rock wall, and the chert layers in the rock wall can be seen to give place to fine granular material (fine silica and iron oxide) and pore space. This is especially noticeable where slumping at the rock walls has not been so great as to displace the layers in the orebody from their contact with their corresponding layers in the rock wall. In 1893 the Anglo-Mexican Mining Company, Limited, purchased the Guadalupe and adjoining mines, and, after opening up the Guadalupe, constructed a 20-stamp mill, which was started in August, 1894. Although the results were extremely profitable (the ore being very rich and carrying much free gold) they were not satisfactory, because the tailings were found to average about $20 per ton in gold. Early in 1895 the late Mr. James E. Mills made for the company a very thorough study of the subject, and decided that the tailings could be treated most advantageously by the cyanide process. In view of this opinion, Mr. Henry R. Batcheller, of Boston, was sent down in the winter of 1895-96 to experiment on a working scale. Mr. Batcheller was successful; and, during 1896-97, built a cyanide-plant with a capacity for treating 1500 tons per month. This was run until May, 1899, when all the sands suitable for the process had been treated. The mill was stopped about the same time for lack of ore; but no tailings from the mill had gone to the dump since October, 1897, as the values they contained after that date were far too low to warrant further treatment. When the cyanide-plant was stopped there still remained on the dump about 16,000 tons of slimes, consisting of about 75 per cent. of clay-slimes and 25 of sand-slimes. The successful treatment of this very unfavorable material is the theme of this paper. Fig. 1 is a view of the hacienda, taken in 1897.

A DETAILED description of the many variations in iron mining and transportation practice in Minnesota would require much space. Since a fairly detailed description of the practices then in use was published in the guidebook issued in connection with the meeting of the Institute on the iron ranges in I920, and subsequent developments have been described by E. E. Hunner,1 M. H. Barber,2 and A. E. Anderson, J. M. Riddell and G. J. Holt,3 it will not be necessary here to do more than review the highlights of current practice. Details on any points of interest can be obtained through correspondence with the operators involved. [T] The iron ores of Minnesota, which have been formed through enrichment of the iron formation in which they occur, largely by the removal of silica, are usually covered by a blanket of glacial drift known locally as "surface." Surface material, including sand, clay, hardpan and boulders, makes up the greater portion of the stripping in open-pit operations. In some instances, stripping also includes taconite and "paint rock," directly below the surface material and overlying the ore. Taconite is the iron formation, a ferruginous chert with interbedded slate layers. "Paint rock" is a local term for oxidized slate layers interbedded in the iron formation, high in phosphorus, alumina and moisture. The iron ores fall into two classes: (I) direct shipping (merchantable ores or ores requiring no treatment except possibly crushing or screening to make an acceptable sized product), and (2) ores requiring beneficiation (such as sintering, drying, washing, jigging, high-density treatment, or magnetic separation in the case of magnetite). The Mesabi Range produces chiefly soft Bessemer and non-Bessemer ores. The Cuyuna Range produces mainly low-manganese brown ore and high-manganese black ores, with some iron ore. The Vermilion Range yields mainly Besse¬mer and non-Bessemer iron ore, with some hard or lump ore that finds use in the open hearth. Open-pit mining is limited to the Mesabi and Cuyuna Ranges but underground mining is done on all three. The choice of mining methods is determined by the relative economics of overburden¬-removal and shaft-mining costs. STRIPPING PRACTICE Common practice has been to remove the bulk of the overburden during the winter season and to mine during the summer. In the present emergency many operators are forced to forego the economies attained by year-round utilization of equipment and to equip for, and carry on, stripping and mining simultaneously. In the normal years or lean years to come, most properties probably will be over-equipped and high depreciation charges will have to be absorbed.

EFFICIENT handling of large tonnages in open-pit mining demands, primarily, an abundance of well fragmented rock. To accomplish this, a drilling and blasting department composed of a well-knit, versatile group of workers and supervisors must be established. Some costs will remain relatively on the same level over a period of years, while others can be greatly lowered as will be shown. The Utah Copper Division, Kennecott Copper Corp., Bingham Canyon, Utah, has been ever alert for improvements in operating methods and equipment to gain increased efficiency and lower costs. BINGHAM CANYON MINE The greatest dimension of the mine is 8000 ft northeast-southwest with a width of 5000 ft southeast-northwest. From the lowest level, at an elevation of 6040 ft above sea-level, the mountain rises in 27 benches on the west side to W level (elevation 7800 ft) and 21 benches on the east side to Q level (elevation 7460 ft). At the inception of open-pit mining in 1906, the overcapping of leached porphyry had to be removed to reach a commercial grade of sulphide ore. The overcapping or waste now remaining is quartzite with intercalated limestone beds. The limestones are usually soft in nature except in the south-middle portion of the mine where they have been metamorphized along the contact zone. This area usually gives drilling and blasting operations a great deal of trouble. Here occurs the greatest amount of secondary blasting, as the well-established fracture planes cause the altered beds to break into large boulders. Several massive quartzite "ribs" occur in the overburden, and as a result, the uniform breakage is difficult to obtain. The major quartzite areas have been subjected to complex folding, fracturing and faulting because of the intrusion of the underlying stock. The monzonite porphyry, which carries the commercial values, presents no serious drilling problem because of its softness and extensive minute fracturing throughout the mass. A series of major slips or faults pass through the ore body which, although of considerable advantage to the drilling and blasting department, sometimes works to the disadvantage of the track department. Drilling and blasting of the porphyry apparently becomes easier as depth is attained, but highly siliceous streaks throughout the pit still present difficulties. At no place is the rock of such character as to allow excavation without preparations. On certain higher elevations or levels, old fill material can be dug by the shovels, but only at some risk to equipment because of bank slippage. VARIOUS investigations have been carried out to determine the effects of cold-rolling on the common physical properties as represented by the yield strength, tensile strength, percentage of elongation and ordinary reduction of area. Very little information is available in the literature with reference to the effects of cold-rolling on the true stress-strain properties. Since the ordinary physical properties base both the stresses and the strains on the original dimensions of the test piece, which are greatly changed during the test, they are essentially empirical values and do not represent physically either true stresses or true strains. Consequently, they do not give an accurate picture of the effects of different conditions, both mechanical and metallurgical, on the strength and ductility of the material. It is not, however, the purpose of this paper to review the various advantages accruing from the use of true stress and true strain values, since these have been shown elsewhere,1-12 but to utilize them in representing the various effects considered. The true stress S and true strain (e = q') values mentioned above for the tension test are defined by1 [ ] where P, A, Ao are the axial load, the instantaneous area and the original area of cross section, respectively. From simultaneous readings of the axial load and the dimension or dimensions determining the instantaneous area of cross section, the true stress-strain curve is constructed by using the relations given in Eq. I. It is then the object of this paper to discuss the general effects of cold-rolling on the true stress and strain values for a low-carbon steel together with the effects of age-hardening and directionality on these properties. PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATIONS The material considered throughout the paper is a low-carbon steel of the following chemical analysis: C, 019 per cent; S, 0. 118; P, 0.092; Mn, 0.85; Si, 0.01. The stock was received in bars, 7 by 3/4 in., and was first annealed for one hour at 1650°F. followed by a furnace cool. Photomicrographs of this material showed considerable directionality even in the annealed condition. In view of the possible effects of the nonhomogeneity and directionality in this material, it was considered important to investigate their influence on the true stress-strain diagrams. In addition, the effect of strain-aging in this steel was also made the subject of a preliminary study. Considerable interest has been shown, during recent years, in the possibilities of developing oil fields in the South American Republics, now that the exhaustion of our present fields can be seen in the not very distant future. The demand for fuel 011 and its products has been increasing far more rapidly than our increment of production during the last few years. Increase of consumption has been largely curtailed by the lack of sufficient supply. The main factors that have contributed to our previous neglect of the southern fields have been as follows: (a) Lack of sufficient demand for the product. (b) Competition with producing fields, having large production, low cost, and better geographical position, such as Tampico, Mexico. (c) Greater interest in home fields with ready market at hand. (d) Our ignorance of southern economic and geologic conditions, due to the distance between those areas and our financial centers. (e) Economic conditions in the southern countries, necessitating high costs of exploration and exploitation of the fields. (f) Our lack of understanding of the business methods of the Latin-American. It must be borne in mind that the oil-development work done to the present time in South America has, with one exception,' been undertaken upon lands which possessed direct evidence of oil in seepages or asphaltic deposits, occurring either immediately upon the lands or in their close vicinity. The development of oil fields in South America is therefore in the pioneer stage. It is not at all improbable that "hidden fields" will be uncovered in future work, as has occurred notably in the mid-continental field of this country within recent years. ThE strain-induced martensitic transformation may be used to attain desirable combinations of strength, ductility, and fracture toughness. One of the parameters is the relative stability of the austenite. For example, it has been shown by Zackay et al.1 that the volume percent of strain-induced martensite is related to the combination of strength and elongation obtained. It has also been shown that the degree of transformation is an important factor in the crack propagation resistance of metastable austenitic steels.2 Considering both tensile and crack-propagation tests, it was of interest to see if there was any functional relationship between the amount of strain and the volume of strain-induced martensite. Previously,9 it had been shown that at room temperature, there was a relationship between uniaxial tensile strain and the volume percent of resulting martensite given by The data were obtained by plastically elongating tensile samples to a certain strain and then measuring the field strength to determine the strain-induced ferromagnetic volume. This was accomplished for two conditions having yield strengths of 229 and 233 ksi. The nominal composition of this material was 9Cr-8 Ni-3 Mo-2 Mn-2 Si-0.25 C-0.09 N. In evaluation of the strain-induced martensite at a crack tip: the question arose as to whether Eq. [1] would also be valid under triaxial stress conditions. Tests were conducted on 1/2-in. thick plate material having a composition of 9 Cr-8 Ni-4 Mo-2 Mn-2 Si-0.27 C. It was found that sectioning, polishing, and etching of fractured specimens could reveal the strain-induced martensite occurring at a crack tip. Care had to be taken to minimize the final polishing steps so as to avoid a smeared layer of strain-induced martensite. " The obscurity which still veils from us the true nature of veins will become more and more cleared up when they can be considered in connection with the geological structure of the regions in which they occur."* These words, according to Lossen, the biographer of the late Dr. A. von Groddeck, of Clausthal, were the last received by him from that eminent man, perhaps the most far-sighted and carefully progressive of recent writers on ore-deposits. They seem to me to form a fitting text for what I am about to say; since I find that many of the conclusions at which I have arrived by my own study of the structural relations of ore-deposits, or, in other words, of the structural and dynamic geology of the regions in which they occur in this country, have been similarly determined by him within recent years in Europe, and especially in his home field of work, the Hartz. I shall not enter upon a detailed account of how far other workers may have arrived at similar conclusions with myself, since these questions of priority are of little interest, except to those immediately concerned; but will briefly present the methods by which, in my work in this country, I have arrived at certain generalizations, and will point out the practical bearing which they may have upon the work of mining engineers. In my first thorough and systematic examination of an important group of ore-deposits, viz., that of Leadville, Colorado, I was enabled, through the generous facilities afforded me by the then Director of the Geological Survey, Mr. Clarence King, to make a most elaborate and detailed study of the geology, not only of the immediate vicinity of the mines, but of the adjacent mountain regions, based upon accurate topographical and underground maps, and

DESPITE the rapidity of chemical reactions at steelmaking temperatures, deoxidation reactions cannot be expected to reach equilibrium immediately after addition of a deoxidizing agent. A considerable period of time may be required merely to obtain complete mixing of the deoxidizing element throughout the volume of steel to which it is added. Evidence in the literature indicates that in some cases the time is long compared with that allowed for completion of the experiment or for teeming of the heat. The great turbulence observed during the filling of the ladle is no guarantee of complete dispersion on a fine scale throughout the heat. During the process there are initially certain volume elements which are high in deoxidizer and others which retain substantially their original oxygen content. Mixing consists of the subdivision and ultimate destruction of these liquid segregates through the process of shear and elimination of concentration gradients by diffusion. The shear process does not continue indefinitely and a quiescent state may be reached in the ladle before all volume elements of divergent deoxidizer and oxygen content are completely eliminated. In furnace deoxidation the time required for complete mixing may be very long unless continuous stirring is employed.' In Fig. 1, let the circle represent one small volume element of aluminum-rich metal surrounded by oxygen-rich steel in which no stirring movement remains. Further mixing requires inward diffusion of oxygen and outward diffusion of aluminum, resulting in precipitation of A12O3 in the diffusion zone. It is important to note that such a precipitate may itself interfere with the diffusion process. Moreover, if the precipitate forms as a film with even minimal mechanical strength, it may interfere not only with diffusion but with shear as well, thus stabilizing compositional differences in volume elements of greater than microscopic size. A film surrounding such a volume element would have little or no ability to rise or to sink unless it enclosed a liquid whose density differed from that of the ambient. Consider now the effect on the overall composition of the melt. Fig. 2 represents the A1-O equilibrium at the temperature of the bath. High-aluminum elements of composition X may exist alongside high-oxygen elements of composition Y in such proportions that the average composition 2 has a much higher A1-O product than that corresponding to equilibrium. The A1-O product supposedly corresponding to equilibrium at 1600 °C was found by Wentrup and Hieber2 to be 10-10, by Hilty and crafts3 to be 2 X 10-9 and by Gokcen and chipman4 to be 2 x 10-14. Networks of resistors are used as analog computers to obtain relative permeability and resistivity index curves for networks of tubes. These curves have all of the characteristics of those obtained on porous media and, therefore demonstrate the validity of the network of tubes model. INTRODUCTION In paper I' of this series the network model was shown to give information on the structure of porous media that could not be obtained from the bundle of tubes model. The agreement between the capillary pressure characteristics of a network of tubes and those of typical porous media does not prove the validity of the network made. The bundle of tubes model, although it gives less information, also shows this agreement. In this paper the flow properties of a network of tubes are shown to be in agreement with flow properties of porous media. The flow properties of the bundle of tubes model are not in adequate agreement with those of porous media. The dynamic properties of porous media, such as fluid permeability and electrical conductivity, have been found experimentally to be more sensitive functions of structure and pore size distribution than are the static properties such as porosity and capillary pressure characteristics. The network model can, therefore, be best tested by comparing the dynamic properties of a network of tubes with the observed properties of porous media. All static and dynamic properties of a completely valid model must agree with the observed properties. The most commonly measured sensitive dynamic properties are the relative fluid permeability and the relative electrical resistivity. Experimental measurements of these dynamic properties on sandstone, sintered glass, sintered alumina, and soil are reported in the petroleum and soil science literature. These properties were chosen, therefore, for the test of the network model. In the network model, relative permeability is the permeability of the network when some of the tubes are not conducting fluid, relative to the permeability when all tubes are conducting fluid. Similarly, the relative resistivity is the electrical resistivity of the network of tubes when some of the tubes are filled with a nonconductor. relative to the resistivity when all tubes are filled with the electrical conducting fluid. Single Size Tube Network The simplest porous medium is one in which all pores are of the same size. Such media can be approached by packing beds or columns of uniform size particles of sand, glass, or metal. The model of such medium in this study is a network of single size tubes. When the United States Government started buying gold at varying prices per ounce, set by the President and the Treasury Department, the gold miner found himself facing new conditions, as gold became a commodity with a fluctuating market price. While it was self-evident that the miner was to receive more for his gold than the old established price of $20.67 per ounce, there was an element of uncertainty, which made it difficult, and perhaps dangerous, to decide to invest his time and money to produce gold, especially if the profit would represent only the difference between $20.67 an ounce and the new price as set from day to day by the Government. When, however, on Jan. 30, 1934, the United States went off the gold standard, the price of newly mined gold being rather definitely set at $35 per ounce, with some assurance that the price would be maintained at or near this figure for a long time to come, the gold miner was justified in revaluing his property on the basis of the new price, and the prospector was offered inducement to spend his time and energies hunting for new mines, or going back to old locations previously abandoned as of doubtful value. It is interesting to see what this new price means to the producer of newly mined gold, and how much of the increase is passed on to the producer. It will be found that, as with the base metals, the nearer he can get to producing a finished product himself the greater his reward will be; the net returns for bullion being necessarily higher than for the same amount of gold shipped in concentrates to the smelter. Bullion can be shipped to the United States mints or Government assay offices under the following terms and conditions. An affidavit must accompany the shipment, stating, among other things: 1. The source of the gold; whether ore, tailings or placer. 2. The tons of ore, tailings or cubic yards of gravel from which the shipment was recovered.

In the victories of peace as well as of war, the science of engineering has played a prominent, if, indeed, not the leading part. While it might be interesting, and food for profitable thought, to trace the development of engineering from early times in its bearings upon the social betterment of mankind, it will be sufficient on the present occasion to suggest a few thoughts that it is hoped will aid the unprofessional listener to an appreciative consideration of the subject-matter laid down for to-day's discussion, and possibly lead the professional brother to a higher conception of the profession to which he belongs. Since the advent of the railway era, it is difficult to grasp the sequence of historic events that have led to the wondrous derelopment of mechanical science, making possible the civilization that is our daily boast, and opening up a vista of future intellectual and moral advancement among the nations of the earth, 'before which the imagination becomes hopelessly lost. Even now, looking back over a period of only half a century, we often fail to realize the vast change in the relations of individuals and nations to each other., brought about by the results of those mechanical discoveries which, having made the whole world kin, exercise a resistless levelling influence that bears fruit politically in the spread of republican ideas, and morally in the elevation of the individual through the facilities given to the dissemination of Christian ideas and general intelligence. In this view, it seems almost like a work of supererogation for a body of representative men of one department of that science to which the whole world owe. so much, to meet here at the centre of our national life to plead not only for a practical recognition of the national importance of the work to which their lives are devoted, but also for national aid, on a scale beyond that of private effort, to the end that mechanical science may be carried to a higher plane than ever yet attained, each step on the way being of material benefit to every man, woman, and child in the community. Following the flowsheet from the primary crushing plant of Ray mines division through the final products sample mill, there are eight exhaust systems ranging in size from 12,000 to 30,000 cfm. Where possible, hood face velocities are kept around 500 ft per min, permitting branch velocities of 2500 ft per min. Tight-fitting enclosures are provided over all ore drops, crushing operations, and vibrating screens. All enclosures are exhausted either primarily or secondarily, except those around conveyor head-pulleys where the ejector effect of the falling ore creates sufficient indraft to abate dust dissemination. IN 1947 an Industrial Hygiene Department was organized to represent and assist the four western mining divisions in industrial hygiene problems. Department headquarters are located at the Utah Copper Division, Magna Plant, Magna, Utah, with a branch office at the Chino Mines Division, Hurley, N. M. The headquarters staff includes a director, a department secretary, an industrial hygienist, a supervising ventilation engineer, and two ventilation designers. To be in closer association with work at the Southwest properties, a field engineer at the branch office conducts field studies which include ventilation problems at the New Mexico and Arizona properties;i.e., the Chino and Ray mines divisions. Functions of the department are to discover and evaluate existing hazards and to develop protective measures, either by personal protective devices or by proper ventilation, depending on the nature of the contaminant. Other than dust counting, all air samples collected at the four properties are processed at the home office. If through plant surveys or by suggestion of management some type of ventilation or air conditioning is required, the problem is usually handled by the ventilation section of the headquarters department, where general arrangement or line drawings are prepared, showing hoods, ducting, and equipment. Some hood and special parts detailing is done at headquarters; otherwise, required detailing is done by the respective plant engineering departments. Prior to the design of industrial ventilation, either new projects or the revamping of old ones, a thorough survey is made of existing conditions. In so far as possible weighted average exposures are determined and adequate ventilation provided on the basis of maximum allowable concentrations of the contaminant in question, as well as medical case histories, if these are available.

THIS is a critical examination of the theory that the amount of carbon necessary to form the iron-carbon (carbide) eutectoid is lowered by the addition of any carbide-forming element. Although this theory has been built up over a long period of years,, it appears, in the light of recent published investigations upon the ternary constitutional diagrams of iron with carbon and other alloying elements, to be no longer tenable. A survey of these new results, summarized below, shows that (as is known) some metals lower the carbon content of the iron-carbon (carbide) eutectoid, whereas others raise it, but (as not heretofore clearly set forth) some first move the eutectoid in one direction and then, at higher concentrations, shift it in the opposite direction. Moreover, these differences in behavior exist even among the common alloying metals classed as carbide formers. PART I INFLUENCE OF BODY-CENTERED CUBIC ELEMENTS The effects of the various body-centered cubic metals (chromium, tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium, columbium and tantalum) are reviewed individually. Iron-carbon-chromium System.-In the monograph on Alloys of Iron and Chromium, Kinzel and Crafts' concluded that the carbon content of the eutectoid is lowered by increasing the chromium content. The quantitative influence of chromium on the eutectoid point of iron-carbon alloys was shown by Monypenny2 (Fig. I) and no data have been forthcoming to refute his findings. Iron-carbon-tungsten System.-Gregg,3 in the monograph on Alloys of Iron and Tungsten, accepted the data showing that tungsten decreases the amount of carbon required to form the eutectoid. The influence of tungsten on the eutectoid percentage of carbon as determined by Oberhoffer and Daeves4 is shown in Fig. a; these results have received general approval. Iron-carbon-molybdenum System.-In the monograph on Alloys of Iron and Molybdenum, Gregg5 reviewed the work of Guillet,6 Swinden,7 and Reed,8 all showing that molybdenum lowered the carbon content of the eutectoid, whereas Takei9 contradicted this conclusion. Svetchnikoff and Alferova,10 a little later, showed that large additions of molybdenum shift the eutectoid to the right. The origin of the salt domes of the Gulf coastal plain has been investigated by many of the most able geologists, but the problem cannot be said to have been satisfactorily solved. Since 1860, numerous theories have been presented, only to be discarded, at least in part, as more complete infomation revealed their fundamental weakness. Real progress toward solution dates from 1902, when Hill1 advanced the theory of secondary deposition of the domal materials from saturated solutions of hot saline waters ascending from great depths under hydrostatic head along structural lines of weakness. Shortly thereafter, Harris,² using Hill's hypothesis as a basis, explained the doming and pronounced uplift associated with these salt cores as the result of forces exerted by growing salt crystals. This was a marked advance over the ideas of Coste3 and Hager,4 since no evidence of igneous intrusives, as they assumed to explain the uplifts, had been found associated with the domes. Harris5 developed his theory until it offered such apparently plausible explanations of so many details of dome phenomena that his hypothesis and conclusions received widespread acceptance, despite some serious objections, and today his theory, somewhat modified, is considered by many able investigators to be the best explanation of the origin of these domes. The immense production of oil per acre, the recognition of the high lubricating quality of the oil, the development and recognition of the efficiency and advantages of oil-burning vessels, with the subsequent exceptional demand for fuel oil, and the resultant advance in the price of coastal crude, have been responsible for a prospecting and develop- 1 Robert T. Particular interest in the ventilation of deep mines, especially those in South Africa, has been created by a very complete system of cooling of the world's deepest mine, the Turf shaft of the Robinson Deep in Johannesburg. The writer visited this mine in January, 1936, and again in 1937. During these visits and subsequently, a considerable part of the theory involved in rock cooling in tunnels was developed and this has been checked by practical observations of the rates of rock cooling made within mines. The purpose of this paper is to set forth the method of attack of the mine problem. The cooling or air conditioning of mines by the use of mechanical refrigeration was not wholly newl-5 when the Robinson Deep installation was made. The first mine to be cooled was the Morro Velho mine, in Brazil. The first installation in this mine was put into operation in December 1920, the refrigerant being ammonia.5 The surface cooling gave considerable benefit but it proved inadequate as greater depths were reached, therefore in 1929 two centrifugal refrigerating machines were installed at the 6000-ft. level. These were used in conjunction with the surface cooling system to furnish additional cooling at the lower levels. This later installation used Carrene as a refrigerant. This nonflammable refrigerant, having a boiling point of 104" at sea level, insured reasonable safety, since all parts of the machine operated at subatmospheric pressure. Very favorable reports have been received on the effectiveness of this installation, but no recent data are available. An interesting feature of that plant is that the condenser water is cooled by spraying it into the exhaust air from the mine at the base of the ventilation upcast, which permits the water to be cooled within a few degrees of the wet-bulb temperature of the air entering the upcast, and the only water that has to be supplied for condensing purposes is that lost by evaporation, or about 0.5 per cent of the volume circulating through the condenser. This plan affords an ideal means for the removal of the heat load from the refrigerating system, and of course also from the mine itself. TEe method of R. W. Moore' for determining subsurface interfacial depths by means of integrated curves of apparent resistivity has been analyzed theoretically. It is found that the only unique tangents that can be drawn to such curves are the asymptotes at infinite electrode spacing and the tangents through the origin at vanishing electrode spacing. Explicit expressions have been derived for the relationship between the electrode spacing at the points of intersection of these tangents and the thickness of the surface strata as a function of the conductivity parameters for the two-layer and three-layer earths. It is found that in all cases the electrode spacing at the points of intersection will exceed % of the thickness of the surface layer, and may even become indefinitely large as the resistivity of the deepest layers increases as compared with that of the surface layer. These results do not agree with the empirical findings of Moore that the intersection of the tangent lines fall at an electrode spacing very approxirnately equal to the thickness of the surface layer. Introduction In a recent paper, R. W. Moore1 proposed a new method for the analysis and interpretation of earth-resistivity measurements. This consists essentially in plotting against the electrode separation of a Gish-Rooney system the integral of the apparent resistivity with respect to the electrode spacing, and observing the breaks in the integral curves. Specifically, tangents are drawn to the various segments of the integral curves, which show appreciably different slopes, and the intersections of these tangents are used as indications of the depths of the various underlying strata. By numerous examples Moore has shown that the electrode separation at the first intersection so found agrees very closely with the depth of the bottom of the surface layer. Moreover, in a number of instances the intersections for greater electrode spacings seemed to correspond to the depths of deeper beds. From a strictly empirical point of view, the procedure proposed and demonstrated by Moore appears to be particularly interesting because of its simplicity as well as its apparent accuracy, Moreover, such a simple method would be especially valuable in view of the well-known difliculties heretofore encountered in the quantitative interpretation of resistivity data. It therefore seems appropriate to attempt a mathematical analysis of the problem to see whether the integral method of Moore has a sound basis. Such an analysis is presented here. Even on cursory consideration, it is clear that the remarkable successes observed by Moore in the application of his method are indeed surprising. For it depends upon the determination and choice of the slopes of smooth and continuous curves, which by their nature must show even more gradual- variations than the original apparent-resistivity plots that are already so difficult to interpret quantitatively. THE development of the modern high-speed vibrating screen, together with the increasing availability of long-lasting stainless-steel screen cloth for relatively fine-mesh separations, means that more screen circuits will be used in the future. It seems pertinent therefore to examine a few characteristics of screen-circuit products, and especially the points of difference as compared with products of classifier circuits. The most noticeable change that takes place when substituting screening for classification in a grinding circuit is a substantial drop in the circulating load, owing to the greater ease with which the "fines" leave the circuit. Where circulating loads of 500 to 600 per cent are considered fairly normal in classifier grinding circuits, the grinding circuit equipped with screens for equivalent work will have a circulating load of only 20 to 75 per cent. As a result, the products of screen circuits will show a minimum of overgrinding or sliming as compared with a classifier circuit. The desirability of this characteristic will naturally vary according to the metallurgical requirement in each case. Because screen separations make a sharper division according to particle size, the products of screen circuits can be expected to show greater crowding of particles near the point of separation. These changes in product characteristics are so important that other factors, both in the grinding and concentration processes must be adjusted if the operator is to take full advantage of the increased tonnages and higher efficiencies available to him through the use of the screen circuit. One factor that too often is overlooked when changing to screen circuits is the importance of adjusting the ball-mill or rod-mill charge, to compensate for: (I) increased tonnage of new feed, (2) decreased circulating load, or (3) more granular character of feed. These same factors should also be taken into consideration for their effect on the various types of concentration or flotation equipment that may follow the screen circuit. Over a period of years, this equipment has generally been designed and adjusted to the product of the classifier, therefore it seems obvious that some research on the adjustment and adaptation of concentrating and flotation equipment to screen-circuit products will be most profitable to the operators. To illustrate the points mentioned above, the results from three recent installations follow, with data on the comparative characteristics of screen and classifier circuits. A range of separation from 10 to 48 mesh has been chosen, using two general types of screening equipment and two types of classifiers. The first of the installations of which the results are to be examined is that of an iron-ore installation where eastern magnetite was being concentrated prior to sintering.
