IN an effort to employ cast steel of a stronger structure than that found in the annealed steel castings, the possibilities of heat treatment which will increase the strength without materially decreasing the ductility may be resorted to. The following abstracted report (which is a brief outline of what has already been clone by the Pennsylvania Railroad Co. at its shops and Test Laboratories at Altoona, Pa.) is of material interest, as it indicates what may be done with steel castings when properly treated, thereby permitting in railway service greater strength of cast steel parts without any increase in weight or space. The question of the heat treatment of alloy steel castings is not taken up in this paper. The obscurity formerly surrounding the heat treatment of steel has been for the most part removed by the development of our knowledge of the critical points of steel, pyrometers, furnace construction, and the testing of the finished product. The operations of the heat treatment proper will be taken up under the heads of (1) heating for quenching; (2) quenching; (3) drawing. (1) Heating for Quenching.-Heating for quenching is best conducted slowly, especially in the case of castings of variable thickness. Cracks may occur either in heating or in cooling, clue to different temperatures at different points of the casting. The castings should be thoroughly soaked at the maximum temperature (generally 1,500° to 1,600° F.), 1 hr. being sufficient for sections 1 ft. in thickness. The minimum temperature which will produce the desired hardening effect will, in all cases, be found to be the most satisfactory, as the grain coarsens when the critical range is exceeded to too great an extent. All temperatures should be governed by a checked pyrometer with the hot junction to the heated object, and with several couples in a large furnace to insure a uniform temperature.

Many requests for information as to the possibility of washing coals to some predetermined percentage of ash or sulfur have suggested that the producers aim to satisfy some degree of purity set by the user of the fuel, rather than to attain the greatest economic benefit to all concerned. This paper is written to show that the highest economic purity of washed coal can be determined from washability studies of the raw coal, costs of mining and washing coal, and data on the effect of ash and sulfur on the value of the coal for the particular use for which it is intended. Coke fob Blast-fuenace Use For purposes of illustration, we take the case of coal washed for coke to be used in the iron blast furnace. The method outlined can be made general in its application by substituting for the figures used here the actual operating figures for the particular case under consideration. In general, it costs the blast-furnace operation from 8 to 25 c. per ton of pig iron to slag out each 1 per cent. of ash introduced into the blast furnace by the coke. This figure depends on which one per cent. of ash is removed, and decreases with decrease in ash. When blast furnaces and coal mines are considered as a whole, the figure decreases to zero and then becomes negative, on account of low recovery of washed coal. Various figures1 have been given by different investigators. These figures necessarily differ, not only on account of the differences in operating costs but on account of the difference in the respective fuels as well. For the purpose of this paper, which, as explained, is to point out a method of attacking a certain problem, the figures used in the exposition of the method are of secondary importance. It is apparent that no universally applicable figures can be used, because there are none. Each plant has its own coal,2 its own operating cost, and its own conditions.

Without doubt Arizona was the scene of the first use of coal in North America, that by the Hopi Indians as early as the 10th century in burning their pottery and in heating their houses and kivas (ceremonial rooms). As has already been said this is the only use of coal by Indians of which we have any knowledge, but it has been well established through investigations conducted by the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology of Harvard University. The apparatus for burning was crude, but they did have fireplaces and chimneys which would draw. The evidences of coal use were found in the Jeddito Valley, in Navajo County, during the excavation of the pueblo of Awatovi, only a short distance from the Keams Canon School. "Many fire pits and primitive stone stoves containing coal ash have been found in the houses, and in most of the kivas built between 1300 and 1600, two firepits have been found, one containing wood ash exclusively and the other coal ash."' The expedition of 1939 found that coal was used much earlier than this, as stated above. It is probable that these Indians were using coal regularly before it came into general use in England and northern Europe. Apparently the use of coal was largely stopped about the time the Spaniards came to that country. The ruins are located on the southern edge of the Black Mesa and the coal seams outcrop on the mesa edge below the ruins. "The coal occurs principally in one large seam which varies from a foot and a half to six feet in thickness."1 This coal is sub-bituminous and burns well, leaving a large percentage of white ash. Another seam is found about 40 ft. above this large seam; it is from six inches to a foot thick and burns to a red ash. Both of these seams were used and coal from the larger seam was used at other houses in the valley. The pottery was usually burned close to the coal seams, and the coal was used to obtain a uniform and satisfactory color. In the Jeddito Valley, the mining was done by stripping, and the methods used are described as follows by J. 0. Brew and John T. Hack, the investigators.

Owing to the nature of the die-casting process, fresllly cast alloys are undoubtedly not at equilibrium from the standpoint of alloy phase relationships. After casting, therefore, they tend to undergo phase changes, with the ultimate effeet of reaching a state of equilibrium at the aging temperature, beyond which no fnrther change takes place. This phase alteration undoubtedly is one of the primary causes of the changes in dimensions and physical properties that zinc-alloy die castings undergo during aging. It is planned to report on this problem in a series of papers of which this is the first. The writers have made a study of commercial zinc die-casting alloys over a period of several years, utilizing the X-ray diffraction technic of determining the phase composition changes in the alloys. Up to the present, two principal phase changes have been observed which are capable of causing dimensional changes: (I) the segregation of secondary constituents from the zinc-base solid solution and (2) the beta aluminum-zinc decomposition. The latter is the subject of the present paper and studies on the former will be reported upon at a future time. Scope of Study In the present investigation a special technic for the study of the beta phase in zinc-alloy die castings has been developed, making possible the determination of the period of existence of the beta phase after casting. The pure beta constituent and its decomposition have been studied in detail. The effect of magnesium and copper on the velocity of the decomposition is reported. The heat of decomposition, the eutectoid temperature arid the accompanying density change have been measured. The density change lias been calculated from data on crystal structure and the result thus obtained has been compared with the actual change.

NUMEROUS experiments in the past few years have proven that void formation occurs quite generally in the diffusion zone of bimetal specimens1-4 The phenomenon has been explained in terms of the accumulation of lattice vacancies resulting from unequal diffusion of the constituents and their eventual precipitation as holes.= Attention has recently been directed to the fact that voids also form within homogeneous metals during high-temperature creep.' The idea has been put forward that these voids form by the condensation of excess lattice vacancies generated by intersecting dislocations.".' If the precipitation of lattice vacancies from solution is treated as a nucleation and growth process, the predicted vacancy concentration for homogeneous nucleation of voids at an observable rate is 100 to 1000 times the normal thermal equilibrium concentration. It appears that voids actually form during diffusion at vacancy supersaturations which are much lower than this8 According to the calculations of Machlin,' the same must be true for voids formed in homogeneous metals during creep, if these are considered to arise from the precipitation of lattice vacancies. Therefore, if the vacancy mechanism is valid, it seems that the holes which form in diffusion and creep specimens are heterogeneously nucleated by imperfections or impurities in the metal. Irregularities in the frequency and distribution of voids in diffusion couples bear out this explanation.' , It is not known at the present time what the nuclei are on which vacancies condense. Various investigators have speculated that they could be certain dislocation configurations, already existing voids produced during solidification or working, gas pockets, or inclusions in the metal. Relatedly, the precise value of the degree of vacancy supersatura-tion for void nucleation is still uncertain. DARKEN1 has pointed out that in most binary liquid metal systems the thermodynamic behavior is relatively simple in the terminal regions. Between the terminal regions. the thermodynamic behavior is more complex. To describe this behavior. he has defined the stability and the excess stability as shown: Qualitatively, an inflection in the free energy of mixing curve results in a change in sign, from positive to negative, of the stability function and is associated with a phase separation. Conversely, a large, positive stability over a narrow composition range is indicative of compound formation. Darken has shown a number of binary systems where the excess stability is constant in the terminal regions and varies sharply in between. The work described in this communication was undertaken to study the variation of stability and excess stability in a binary system as a function of temperature. In addition, this work provides means for the direct comparison of previously existing equilibrium (activity) and calorimetric (molar heat of mixing) data on the Hg-Sn system. Hildebrand2 measured the vapor pressure of mercury over Hg-Sn alloys at 595°K. Calorimetric studies were made by Kawakami3 at 523°K and by Kleppa4 at 423°K. In this work, the equilibrium vapor pressure of mercury was measured over a series of Hg-Sn alloys at 453" and 503°K by use of fused salt manometer with one arm exposed to mercury vapor. Deflections of the fused salt manometer were balanced by argon pressure on the other arm. Argon pressure was subsequently measured with a dibutyl phthalate manometer. Tin activities were determined by graphical integration of the Gibbs-Duhem equation making use of the familiar Darken5 a function. The activities of mercury and tin showed positive deviation from Raoult's law at 453 and 503°K as Hildebrand observed at 595 K. In Fig. 1 are plotted log activity of mercury and tin vs reciprocal temperature. The plot contains activities obtained from calorimetric studies. Hult-gren6 has calculated activities from Kleppa's4 data, and Kubaschewski7 has similarly treated Kawakami's7 data. Presumably. in each case a regular solution was assumed. The Cuyuna manganiferous iron ores can be a principal source of manganese for the iron and steel industry in the United States, provided metallurgical methods as a whole are adjusted so as to use run-of-mine ore. The use of manganese in steelmaking is growing. Increasing amounts of impurities in raw materials call for more manganese, a constant cheap supply of which is wanted. There are few deposits of ore in the United States carrying over 35 per cent. manganese that can be mined and marketed at a profit in normal times. We are largely dependent on foreign ores. The small domestic deposits should rightly be held in reserve for an emergency, such as a war, when importation might cease. Even the production from lean ores, concentrated it may be, might not carry us through a protracted stringency. The Cuyuna district is, therefore, during normal times capable of supplying a large total of manganese. The ores are iron ores containing 5 to 25 per cent. of manganese with the inverse range of 52 to 28 per cent, of iron. The manganese costs no more per unit in the ore than the iron, because cost of mining, largely by open-pit methods, is not affected by the manganese content. The manganese units should, perhaps, command a higher price, but as their value is contingent on metallurgical practice, a higher price may be justified only when a shortage in manganese occurs. Manganiferous iron ores can never entirely supplant straight manganese ores though methods are employed that will permit them to do so partly. For the manufacture of ferromanganese, ores carrying above 42 per cent. manganese are needed. Ores with manganese running between 20 and 42 per cent. are used for making spiegeleisen. But established practice in certain plants, based on the admixture of manganiferous iron ores to straight iron ores has greatly lessened the consumption of high-priced, scarce, manganese alloys with good results. [ ] We at The Dow Chemical Co. have recently done some work on the deformation of magnesium alloys and although it is far from complete there have been a few observations which may be of interest in connection with this paper. In the first place, I should like to point out that the deformation of polycrystalline magnesium alloys has not been completely explained by the work on single crystals. Bakarian and Mathewson found slip on the ( 101) and {002) planes, and (102) twinning as the deformation mechanisms in magnesium single crystals, but in compression when the (002} planes were within ii° of parallel t0 the compression surfaces, fracture occurred at all temperatures up to 340°C (644°F). In commercial working processes, particularly in rolling, an orientation is quickly produced which should be unfavorable to further deformation by the three established mechanisms. The effects of selected alloying elements on the elevated-temperature tensile properties of copper alloy -tungsten fiber reinforced composites were invcstigated. A cornparison of the elevated-temperature tensile properties of copper alloy - tungsten fiber reinforced composites, representing soluble systems. was made with copper - tungsten fiber reinforced composites, representing a mutually insoluble system. A linear relation between tensile strength and volume percent fiber content existed at elevated temperatures for all the systenzs investigated. The copper alloy composites were weaker in tension at high volume percent fiber contents than copper composites in which alloying with the fiber did not occur. The tensile strength of the alloyed tungsten fiber decreased with increasing penetration of the alloying element into Ihe tungsten fiber. THE technique of combining strong fibers with relatively weak matrix materials so that the fibers are load-carrying members has been utilized for many years in the reinforcement of plastics with glass fibers. This type of strengthening is currently being extended to include the reinforcement of metals with metallic fibers. Investigations of the room-temperature tensile properties of metal-fiber-reinforced metallic composites have been numerous,'-" but the study of tensile properties at elevated temperatures has been limited. In previous work done at the Lewis Research Center' composites consisting of mutually insoluble constituents were investigated. Composites were made of copper reinforced with uniaxially oriented tungsten fibers. The stress-strain behavior and tensile properties of the composites were related to the tensile properties of the base materials. The tensile strength of the composite was directly proportional to the volume percent of tungsten fiber present, and the full strength of the fiber was realized. In a recent paper on the intermittent injection of gas in gas-lift operations as opposed to continuous injection, Morgan Walker presented a comparative table showing the effect on oil and gas production from the same wells under the two methods of operation.' This table carried a column showing the formational gas-oil ratios under each method, computed by deducting the volume of input gas from the volume of trap gas. During the entire spring and summer of 1928, the present writer had been engaged on some extensive test car tests of rich gas in Glenpool, seeking, primarily, for an explanation of the apparent loss of gasoline during the summer season between the field meters and the plant master meter. Tests at several of the field meters where the richest gas was obtained regularly failed to check with other tests on the same gas made farther along the line, and the difference was not made up by the quantity of drip gasoline collected between the points. In the course of these tests, the final outcome of which is immaterial to the present purpose, an attempt was made to construct a curve representing the relationship between gasoline content of the gas in gallons per thousand cubic feet and the shrinkage in the volume of gas treated as a result of removing the condensible fractions. Such a curve was made, expressed in units of gallons per thousand cubic feet on the abcissa and the ratio vapor volume to liquid volume on the ordinate. This curve is a rectangular hyperbola and shows that 3 gal. of gasoline taken from 1000 cu. ft. of raw gas as a vapor occupied much less space, per gallon, than did 1 gal. of gasoline taken from 1000 cu. ft. of another sample of gas. This is, in general, corroborated by converting to the same units the residue settlement curves prepared by the Tidal Oil Co. and by the Natural Gasoline Manufacturers Assn., though the three curves, when plotted together, occupy entirely different positions on the paper, as shown in Fig. 1. The bearing of all this on Mr. Walker's discussion of gas-lift is this: if the formational gas is to be computed by deducting the input gas from the trap gas, some correction must be made for the vapor volume

MOST metallurgists appreciate the great need of a process for the extraction and recovery of valuable metals from complex ore, where the presence of one metal increases the cost of extracting the other metals to such an extent that not any of the metals can be extracted at a profit. We need only refer to some of the mines in Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico, where oxidation has taken place and the sulphur, zinc, copper, and some of the iron and other metals have been leached out, large bodies of oxidized ore remaining, rich in lead, silver, and sometimes gold. These metals have been concentrated by the removal of the other metals, leaving a very desirable ore for treatment in the blast-furnace for the production of lead bullion, and recovery of the silver and gold. If lead is not present, the gold and silver are usually recovered by some method of milling, or the ore is shipped to a smelter, where it is mixed with lead ore or copper-iron sulphide ore from some other mine. In these same mines, when developed to greater depth below the leached or oxidized zone, the ore is found to contain the original mixture of sulphur, zinc, copper, etc., added to, or I should say left with, the lead, silver, and gold values; but instead of adding to the value of the ore, the presence of these elements, especially zinc, makes the copper, silver, and gold of less value, and often worthless. Such was the experience of the oldest mines in Leadville, Colo., until methods of mechanical separation of the lead from the zinc were developed sufficiently to allow of some profit by the making of a concentrate rich in zinc to be shipped to the zinc smelter, and sometimes a lead concentrate which could be shipped to the lead smelter; but even in these cases the waste of the different metals is a very serious matter. In the very best concentrating plants some zinc will be left in the lead concentrate, to be lost and to give considerable trouble in the lead-smelting furnace. On the other hand, some of the lead, with a large percentage of the copper and silver, will follow the zinc into the zinc concentrate, to be, perhaps, recovered y smelting the cinder or clinker left in the re-

Detailed descriptions are given of materials, apparatus and the experimental procedure used to study the effect of bacteria on sandstone permeability. The factors affecting permeability during injection of bacterial suspensions which have been investigated are: (I) concentration of bacteria; (2) core permeability and median pore size; (3) species of bacteria, mode of aggregation and relative size; (4) injection rate or pressure differential; (5) mean pressure; and (6) depth of penetration of bacteria. The investigation demonstrated that bacteria cannot reduce core pertneability to zero and that their effect on permeability is subject to definite limitations. Remedial or permeability restoration studies also were made. Acidization in combination with reverse flow war found to be an effective method for restoring permeability In cores partially plugged with bacteria. The relationship between the bacterial quantities in the laboratory tests and those found in field operations is discussed. The linear laboratory flow data have been translated into terms of field radial systems; these data indicate the most practical methods of maintaining injection rates in the presence of bacteria are to increase injection pressures or hydraulically fracture the formation. INTRODUCTION It has long been known that various bacteria flourish in the above-ground components of oil field water-injection systems. The presence of these bacteria has led to the suspicion that they might enter into the causes for reduction of injection well permeability, but only recently has an attempt been made to describe the effects quantitatively.1 Biocides are used in many cases without a firm knowledge as to whether the bacteria are killed, or if they are, whether the dead cells affect formation permeability. This project was undertaken as part of a study to determine the effect of bacteria, residual oil and precipitated solids such as iron sulfide or calcium carbonate on the permeability of sandstones and to learn whether any of these materials adversely affect brine injectivity in secondary recovery or disposal operations. This report deals with that portion relating to the effect of bacteria. MATERIALS CORES Three different permeability ranges of Berea sandstone cores were used in the study. The range of initial, absolute brine permeabilities kj were: high — 278 to 400 md: medium—130 to 162 md; and low—17.7 to 48.3 md. The permeability data for the cores used in the tests are included in Table 1. All cores were cut to a nominal 1 in. diameter. Following air permeability determinations, they were molded with an epoxy resin in 1.5 in. ID aluminum sleeves. The sleeves had drilled and tapped holes for intermediate pressure connections along the length of the cores. After molding, the high- and medium-permeability cores were trimmed to 4 in. in length and the low-permeability cores to 2 in. These lengths resulted in pore volumes of approximately 10.9, 10.4 and 4.4 ml, respectively, for the high-, medium- and low-permeability cores. Pressure-transmitting channels were drilled through the plastic into the core proper, using the sleeve holes as drill guides. Width and depth of channel penetration into the core proper were approximately 0.03 in. and 0.05 in., respectively. Three pressure taps were used with all cores; for the high- and medium-permeability cores the taps were spaced 1 in. apart; for the low-permeability cores the taps were spaced 0.4, 0.8 and 1.2 in. from the inlet end. Pore size distributions were calculated from restored-state capillary pressure curves for representative cores in each of the three permeability ranges. In each case the pore size range with the greatest percentage of the pore space included the very small pores up to 0.5 micron in radius. The median pore radii were in the 5.5 to 6 micron range for the high-permeability cores; in the 4.5 to 5 micron range for the medium-permeability cores; and in the 3.5 to 4 micron range for the low-permeability cores.

The Yates field is situated in northeastern Pecos County, Texas. Its productive area is about 15,000 acres. Production is chiefly from limestone of Permian age. Depths of wells vary from 1100 to 1800 ft. Initial productions range from a few barrels to 8000 bbl. per hour. The field outlet has always been prorated. Gas-oil ratios originally varied from less than 100 cu. ft. up to 8000 cu. ft. per barrel at allowable production rates. The average ratio was about 500 cu. ft. Fig. 1 shows the structure of the field and the location of the Tippett lease, on which the original experimental tubing work was done. Before the latter part of the year 1929, little actual effort in practice had been given to determination of the conditions under which the highest efficiencies may be realized in naturally flowing wells. For the preceding few years attention had been given to gas-oil ratios and their possible reduction by maintenance of back-pressure by choking at the well head. Some attempts had been made toward reduction of ratio by bottom-hole choking. In late 1929, the Shell Petroleum Corp. started the experimental installation of specially designed flow columns adapted to high-pressure flowing conditions in the Yates field. The objectives in view were the attainment of low gas-oil ratios at low rates of flow and the maintenance of high bottom-hole pressures. All naturally flowing wells should be provided with a suitable eductor string immediately upon completion of the well, so that the benefits of efficient flow will be derived from the beginning. This paper presents a method of tubing for efficient flow and a discussion of some complex factors which influence well behavior. Factors Influencing Gas-oil Ratios Many factors influence the production of gas from naturally flowing wells. The writers believe that in some instances gas control is effected mainly in the reservoir itself, in others in the well bore, and in still others both sets of factors may be significant. In a previous paper1 a method for the measurement of the comparative desulphurizing power of slags was described and data were presented covering the range of likely slags containing up to 10 per cent MgO. In the present work the range is extended to include slags containing up to 20 per cent MgO, and the effect of temperature on 5 per cent and 15 per cent MgO slags over the range 1475' to 1525' C. is included. The method used was that described in the previous paper except that some of the temperature measurements were made with a noble-metal thermocouple instead of a tungsten-graphite thermocouple. Twelve-gram charges of 0.8 per cent sulphur-metal and 5-gram charges of slag were subjected to heating for 30 min. at a prescribed temperature. The charges were analyzed for sulphur content. For purposes of comparison, desulphurizing power is defined as the ratio of the percentage of sulphur found in the slag to that found in the metal. Six slag and metal charges were made coincidentally in 5/8in. holes in a section of an electrode graphite rod. One slag and metal charge was used as a control by means of which adjustment in the desulphurization value could be made for small variations in temperature and other factors. For convenient presentation of the data, the slags are arranged in groups in each of which one of the four main slag components is constant. Thus, the 15 per cent MgO slags are presented separately from those containing 20 per cent MgO. Slags with Magnesium Oxide Constant 15 Per cent Mg0.—The data on slags containing 15 per cent MgO cover a composition range of 24 to 50 per cent SiO2, 5 to 27 per cent A1203 and 24 to 53 per cent CaO. Variation in composition has been in steps of 2 per cent over much of the area. The remarkable men who conceived the thought of transporting petroleum by pipe line, conserving the by-products of the commodity, and conducting extended investigation and research whereby the flash point of the oil was raised, its cost reduced and its Supply assured, are deserving of the gratitude of this nation. It was primarily the success attained by Captain Lucas, after his comprehensive search for oil in Texas and Louisiana, that was the impelling cause. which 'prompted the Navy Department to conduct the extensive series of liquid fuel-oil tests that were made from 1901 to 1903. The sensational discovery of oil at Spindle Top made a deep impression upon Rear Admiral George W. Melville, then Engineer-in-Chief of the Navy, and the discovery of the vast oil field in Texas convinced him that, within a generation, if not within a decade, crude petroleum was going to play a very important part in warfare, and that the commodity might possibly develop into a necessary munition of war. The United States' Commanding Position as a Petroleum Producer.¬ In the study of the various problems relating to the world's production of crude petroleum, the position of the United States is one of commanding importance, whether viewed from the industrial or the military aspect. The present yield of this country is practically double that of the rest of the world, and, in view of the productive and prospective fields possessed by various countries, together with the comprehensive and exhaustive search that has been made throughout the world for petroleum, it is extremely probable that this lead will be maintained for the next decade. As regards the character of the crude-oil yield of different countries, America possesses the greater part of the supply that contains a paraffine base, and therefore a considerable portion at least of the American product produces the best illuminant. Of all the crude-oil distillates, kerosene is in many respects the most important, and the Appalachian product for this purpose is favored, particularly in the Far East, above that of any other petroleum yield of the world.

For many years mine surveyors and exploration engineers have sought an accurate means of transferring meridian underground by using the gyro-compass. These efforts have generally failed, either because they were inaccurate or because the size and cost of the unit were prohibitive. During the past ten years, however, great strides have been made. Autonetics in California has developed a comparatively light-weight (100-lb) gyro-theodolite, and the Institute for Mine Surveying at Clausthal Mining Academy in Germany has developed an instrument that is accurate to within 20" to 30" of arc. Concurrently, Minneapolis-Honeywell has produced an astounding gyro, the size of a salt shaker, that weighs less than 0.5 lb and compares favorably in performance with the 50-lb gyros of conventional design. This unit, designed for missile guidance, should be adaptable for surveying small boreholes. Given the proper interest and approach from the engineering fraternity, excellent gyrocompasses could probably be available for accurate underground survey work at nominal cost within the next three years. Principles of the Gyro-Compass: The gyrocompass, used for 50 years as a navigational instrument in ships and aircraft, senses the turning axis of the earth and points out true polar north. It does this by employing the earth's rotation, the force of gravity, and the precession characteristics of a gyro. For further details the reader is referred to several excellent publications'"3 covering the principles and application of the gyroscope. The heart of the gyro-compass is the gyroscope, or rapidly spinning wheel, which rigidly maintains its angular orientation in inertial space. Free gyros employ universal joints to allow the wheel axle to maintain its rigid spatial orientation independent of base motion disturbances. Free gyros are independent of the earth's turning and are not north-seeking. Only as they might be initially oriented parallel to the earth's turning axis could any north indication be obtained. In practice, the free gyro tends to drift off its set position and lose its accuracy. The Sperry-Sun Well Surveying Co. instrument (5M in O. D.) is of this free gyro type. It is counterbalanced, however, against the rotational effects of the earth, so that orientation of the spinning axis will be maintained throughout the survey.

AT the meeting of the Western Division of the American Mining Congress, held in Denver last September, papers were read by F. H. Brownell, a vice-president of the American Smelting and Refining Co. and chairman of its finance committee, and by H. Foster Bain, former director of the United States Bureau of Mines and now secretary of the A. I. M. E.. which dealt thoroughly with certain phases of my sub-ject. These addresses can hardly have failed to awaken serious reflection in all who listened to them; but their implications have apparently not penetrated the con-sciousness of bankers, economists and statesmen, whose business it is, or should be, to prepare for the economic and social changes which must inevitably follow, if the conclusions which I shall outline hereinafter are true. In discussing this subject I wish to disclaim any intention or desire to forecast the course of the metal markets or the immediate prospects of the mining in-dustry. The facts' adduced must inevitably influence the value of metals, the activity and profitableness of mining, and perhaps also the social status of those en-gaged in it. But my forecasts do not refer to this year, next, year, or the year after. The nearest ap-proach to a date on which I will venture is that the relative scarcity of gold may begin to make itself felt in something like ten years from now, but its effect will not culminate for several years thereafter. Scarcity of new gold is likely to be offset, to some extent, by increasing use of currencies based on credit; but unless it is found possible to dispense with the gold standard altogether, this can hardly prevent a great ultimate fall in commodity prices. This fall, moreover, is likely to be more severe in manufactured goods than in what are, popularly termed raw ma-terials; and most of all in those manufactured goods which are susceptible to the greatest degree to cheapen-ing by mass production, and which are least counter-affected by increasing metal prices; by which I mean those in which the cost of metal contained forms a relatively small, element in the total cost of production.

THE INSUFFICIENCY OF PILLARS OF COAL FOR THE PURPOSES DESIGNED-THE FRUITFUL CAUSE OF DANGER, EXPENSE, AND WASTE-THE PROOF OF INSECURITY-SUBSTITUTE FOR PILLARS OF COAL-PILLARS AND PANELS COMPARED. PILLARS of coal, which are designed and left in our mines as the means of supporting the overlying strata of our coal-beds, and securing protection to the miner, are not only insufficient for these purposes, but the most objectionable means of providing the desired security to life and property. Though such pillars are left at a great sacrifice to the owners of collieries and mineral lands, loss to the resources of the commonwealth, and ultimate privation to the public, they defeat the very ends for which they are designed, and not only do not secure life and property, but are as fatal to the one as ruinous to the other. Propositions.-It is eminently desirable that the resources of the commonwealth-particularly our mineral wealth in anthracite coal, which is limited-should be carefully utilized and made available, not only to ourselves but our posterity. Yet, speaking as an anthracite miner, we are wasting our resources of coal with a recklessness which will bring ruin in the end, unless checked, not only to the iron manufacturing interests of the East, whose chief protection, in competition with the iron-masters of the interior, lies in a cheap and abundant supply of anthracite furnace fuel, but to the best interests of the State. It is, consequently, not only desirable, but necessary, that we should realize every ton of coal from each colliery, and every acre of coal area, in order that our resources may not be wasted at present, to breed want in the future, and to realize the greatest present benefit to the mine, the miner, and the public. It is not possible, however, to secure these ends, if we continue to leave, as we do at present, from one-third to one-half our resources in anthracite as pillars in our mines. But our sad bills of mortality, our abandoned collieries, and our yawning mountain-sides, present ample evidence that even this enormous waste of coal, though left for the purpose of protecting life and property, is as totally inade-

THE question, what is the best proportion among weight, fall, and speed of stamps, is one which has not yet received thorough and systematic examination. In considering the economical application of stamping machinery, we meet, at the beginning, with serious difficulties in obtaining accurate data for comparison. The weight and fall of stamps vary as the shoes and dies wear out; and this may lead to a change of speed also. Moreover, defects in engines, boilers, or machinery for the transmission of power, may occasion serious losses, which cannot fairly be charged to the arrangements of the stamps proper. Again, the capacity of stamp-mills is directly dependent, in some degree, upon the nature and extent of discharge, fineness of screens, and other peculiarities of the battery. Finally, the hardness and tenacity of the rock crushed varies so much that comparisons between different localities cannot be implicitly trusted. The safest experiments are those made in the same mill, by changing first one and then another condition of working; but this is seldom possible for such conditions as weight and lift of stamps, and only within narrow limits for their speed. We may eliminate questions of friction, transmission, and generation of power, in the case of stamps, by measuring the power actually developed by their fall. Thus, the weight, multiplied into the fall in feet, and the number of drops per minute, gives us exactly the number of foot-pounds exerted by each stamp. Dividing by 33,000, the number of foot-pounds per minute in one-horse power, we have the horse-power per stamp, from which the effective power of the whole mill may be obtained. Dividing the amount of rock crushed daily by the effective horse-power, gives us the daily amount per horse-power; and this is the best measure that can be obtained for the effectiveness of the stamps. A complete discussion of the subject would require us to determine the exact influence of the discharge, etc., and the exact resistance offered by different classes of rocks, for both of which points the data are wanting.
