At LKAB's plants in Lappland, Sweden, sintered pellets are manu-factured according to three different industrial processes, viz. shaft furnace at Malmberget, straight-grate at Kiruna and grate-kiln at Svappavaara. At present the total annual capacity amounts to 4.7 million tons. However, since it has been decided to erect a new straight-grate plant (2.5 million tons) at Malmberget, and because of the decision to extend and rebuild the existing plants, it is estimated that the annual capacity will be increased to somewhat over 8 million tons by 1973. The great majority of the pellets produced is exported. They are thus reloaded several times and generally speaking roughly handled, resulting in larger or smaller product losses on arrival at the point of use. It is there-fore of great economical interest to have a good control over the transport strength of the pellets by appropriate quality testing at the point of production. In addition to good transport strength, further demands are ob-viously made on pellets destined for blast furnace operation. The blast furnace burden must maintain a good permeability for the gas. The pellets must thus have a favourable size distribution and must not be so weakened by reduction that they disintegrate under the stresses and clog the blast furnace shaft. Furthermore, the burden must have good reducibility. An increase of the rate of reduction can obviously mean increased blast furnace capacity and reduced coke consumption. In order to optimise the properties of the pellets in these respects, the producer must also be thoroughly familiar with their behaviour during reduction, particularly as the customer's interest in the reduction properties of the pellets' has increased over the last few years. Up to now the only quality demands the customer has made have generally had to do with the cold strength and the screen analysis. Thus a quality control of in addition to good transport strength, further demands are obviously made on pellets destined for blast furnace operation. The New Pacific Northwest Baseball Park, now known as Safeco Field, is located directly south of the Kingdome in Seattle, Washington, and will be the new home of the Seattle Mariners baseball team. The location of the ball field is shown on Figure 1, Vicinity Map. The seating capacity is 45,600, and outfield distances are 331 feet in left, 405 feet in center, and 326 feet in right field. The overall dimensions of the stadium are 680 by 800 feet. It is bordered on the east by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad main line. A unique aspect of this ballpark is the retractable roof with a north-south span length of 660 feet. The roof consists of three separate sections that roll on elevated rails running east-west on the north and south sides of the stadium. The soil conditions consisted of near-surface fill underlain with alluvial and Estuarine deposits to depths of 60 to 80 feet. The bearing soils consisted of very dense, glacially overridden deposits. Groundwater is 4 to 7 feet below the ground surface, and the alluvial deposits are subject to liquefaction during a strong motion earthquake.

The object of this talk is to bring before members the importance of the prospector and the' State Battery system to the wealth and prosperity of the mining industry in particular and the State of Western Australia in general, and to touch on the more important features.Customs plants of any sort are usually subject to a good deal of critioism, usually on the large profits made at the expense of the customer, etc., and this often clouds the real value of the work being done.Prospectors, on the whole, are a good class of men; they work under conditions and difficulties which would deter those less spirited. Food, water and mining supplies are often difficult to obtain and frequently have to be transported great distances. Their mining tools are usually of the most primitive type, yet during last year over 109,000 tons of prospectors' ore were handled by the State Battery system for 73,250 fine oz. valued in Australian currency at over £587,000, the value being 57/- per long ton at par.This production brings the State Battery system into fourth position amongst the producers of the State, the yield being exceeded by the Lake View and Star, Wiluna and the Great Boulder.In passing I might mention that these notes were written at the end of the year 1940, and the above figures were for the previous period. The figures for last year, 1940, were not quite so good, being 101,000 tons for approximately 60,000 fine oz., valued in Australian currency at £572,000.In spite of this drop the State Battery system maintained its position as fourth in order of gold output for the State.The extractions, as a whole, throughout the system, were 92·54%, made up of 68·86% by amalgamation and 23·68% by cyanidation. These figures, for a group of 20 plants treating widely different classes of ore, must be considered satisfactory. The total production since inception is over £11,000,000 in Australian currency.State Batteries are usually more or less of a standard design. Ore is reduced to about 2i in. maximum size before being sent to the bins. Challenge automatic feeeders control the feed to each mill unit, amalgamated copper plates collect the free gold. Corduroy strakes are used with some ores after amalgamation, but in only a few cases has this been found of any advantage to the customer.The pulp from the battery is sampled, after leaving the tables, with a "Tazewell" sampler and pumped to dams for subsequent cyanide treatment.The "Tazewell" sampler is a machine driven by the moving pulp; and takes about fifteen dips per .minute from such pulp through a slotted...

Although trace amounts of Indium are found in many ores, commercial production of the metal has come almost exclusively from residues, flue dusts and slags generated by Zinc recovery operations. Our paper attempts to summarize the various approaches used to recover Indium from these by-products. Some comments on production and price trends are included as well as our views on future availability.

Experimental studies for quantification of force and brittleness indices relevant to rock cutting performance are presented. A simple interpretation method is developed, which quantifies the force-penetration response obtained from indentation tests. Basic parameters of the quantification are force increment and decrementrates, force increment and decrement periods, and number of increment and decrement data points. Blocks of eleven different rock samples were collected from different operating mines in Turkey and subjected to indentation tests to calculate the indices. The samples included harzburgite, serpentinite, trona, limestone, claystone, two different sandstone samples, siltstone and three different chromite ore samples. The concept was validated by a set of full-scale linear cutting tests using a conical cutter for measuring the cutting performance in relieved and unrelieved conditions, i.e. cutter forces, specific energy, size distribution of rock cuttings. The rock cuttings were sieved to determine coarseness index, indicates coarse chip generation characteristics, and size distribution. The force index is moderately correlated with the cutting performance and mechanical properties of the rocks, and poorly correlated with the coarseness index and size distribution of cuttings. A general and moderate trend is observed between the brittleness index and the coarseness index, cutting performance for unrelieved cutting conditions and mechanical properties of the rocks. However, additional data is required to fill the data gaps and to potentially establish relationship between the brittleness index and all other parameters.

The physical beneficiation of iron ore that has a wide particle-size distribution is problematic, regardless of the process applied, whether dense medium separation, gravity concentration, magnetic separation, or flotation. The problem of particle size is further compounded when there is a significant -10 µm fraction. Generally the approach to a wide particle-size distribution is to split into narrower size ranges and treat each separately. More often than not the -10 µm fraction is not treated but discarded. This approach results in a more complicated and expensive flow sheet and the loss of any potential value in the -10 µm fraction. Wet high-intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) bench-scale test work was conducted on a haematite-rich material with a particle size of -200 µm. What made this material different was that it contained a 60% -10 µm fraction, hence discarding the -10 µm material was not an option. The objective of the test work was to determine how to maximize the recovery of the haematite across the full particle size range. Given the unusual particle size distribution, it was concluded that WHIMS would be the only practical beneficiation route. The -200 +10 µm and -10 µm fractions were treated separately and together under varying WHIMS conditions. For a given concentrate grade, the mass yield obtained was greater when the total particle-size distribution was treated. The inferred optimum conditions, using the same material, were tested on a pilot-scale WHIMS and similar results were obtained.

This paper focuses on the underground tunnel work at the Hollywood Water Quality Improvement Project (HWQIP) in Los Angeles, CA. The HWQIP is being constructed to provide a water distribution system to bypass the existing Hollywood Reservoir System, which supplies drinking water for 500,000 people. The major project features include, a 2.9-meter diameter 1,829 meter long bypass tunnel, a 1.8-meterdiameter 366 meter long utility tunnel, 3 jack and bore tunnels, two 136 million liters underground circumferentially wrapped pre-stressed concrete water storage tanks, associated piping, and mechanical facilities. The physical project location coupled with strong community involvement and stringent environmental concerns was a considerable driving force for this project located in the Cahuenga Pass area of the Hollywood Hills north of Los Angeles, CA.

This paper on coarse particle recovery (CPR) summarizes a process to capture coarse particles that are not recoverable by regular flotation. Several porphyry copper operations in the world operate analogous circuits that recover non-floated copper from tailings; however, the case presented here is unique in that extensive underlying test work has allowed the authors to elucidate some fundamental principles behind recovery enhancement. This paper discusses an overview of the flowsheet that is proposed to Minera Escondida Ltda., the nature of copper in the feed to the CPR circuit, and the various unit operations within the recovery circuit.

Recent developments in diamond drilling practice have been chiefly 'concerned with modifications in drill design and 'operating technique whereby an increase in daily footage rates and reduced footage costs have been achieved without any marked improvements in the recovery of core. This trend is perhaps due to the general acceptance by the mining and drilling engineer alike of the belief that diamond drilling has definite limitations in exploratory work on mineral deposits characterized by irregularities in continuity and grade, such a belief arising from the fact that drilling technique has not yet evolved coring devices to ensure the full recovery of the rock and mineral formations penetrated.Current diamond drilling operations at Moonta and Wallaroo Mines, carried out by the South Australian Department of Mines, have attained remarkable results in completely eliminating core-loss by the use of a special double-tube core barreI.It is considered that assays of borehole samples taken with this special barrel have a reliability comparable, if not superior to that of similarly situated mine samples and, provided they are spaced satisfactorily, can be used as, a basis for calculating tonnage and grade. Formerly, with only partial core-recoveries, positive borehole results on narrow irregular lodes, such as those in the Moonta and Wallaroo Mines, could be accepted mainly as indications of the presence of mineralization, and could have only a limited bearing on estimates of ore reserves.The value of this special double-tube core-barrel lies In the fact that it guarantees good core recovery and, therefore, good samples, and eliminates the need for sludge-sampling, which is prone to give unreliable assay results from several causes, such as gravity concentration in the bottom of the hole and return water losses which cannot be overcome.In view of the increasing demand for minerals and the probability that the search for them will be carried on largely by boring, it is felt that it would be of interest and value to direct the attention of mining engineers to core-recovery results obtained by diamond drilling plants in South Australia and the features of the special core-barrel, designed by the writer, which has made this possible. Also, the writer is desirous of placing on record two other core-recovery devices designed to extract accurate samples in relatively soft or unconsolidated formations. The latter are used with percussion and calyx plants, respectively and their value has been proven on phosphate rock and coal deposits in South Australia.

Silver ore was discovered at Aspen in 1879, but the district did not reach full production until 1888 after lawsuits were settled and railroads furnished less expensive transportation to the outside world. The boom years were 1888-92; production declined thereafter. From the middle 1920's until 1950, the Midnight mine in the Richmond Hill district furnished most of the output in the Aspen quadrangle. Since 1950, little mining has been done at Aspen. The metals produced were silver, lead and zinc. Native silver dissolved from the sulfide ores was redeposited by waters circulating as deep as 300 m below the land surface, resulting in great secondary enrichment of many of the deposits. Over 100 million ounces of silver were produced in the Aspen quadrangle. Low-grade lead-zinc deposits remain between the old workings locally, and data available suggest that primary ore below levels mined is also of low grade. The ore occurs in the Mississippian Leadville Limestone and the lower part of the Pennsylvanian Belden Formation in sites that were made favorable for deposition by a number of stratigraphic and structural factors.

Most geophysical and geochemical data collected during regional exploration programmes are in vector form (location, value), and have traditionally been presented and interpreted in a profile or contour map format. However, the human vision system can interpret data presented in image format much more easily and new information is often revealed by the judicious application of powerful interactive computer image enhancement techniques. This paper describes a practical demonstration of the application of such tools to gravity and resistivity datasets from the Central Volcanic Region of theNorth Island.   Filtering, contrast enhancement, relief shading, pseudo-colouring and then overlaying of the gridded datasets in image format has helped identify inter-relationships such as the association between many low resistivity anomalies (epithermal deposits or geothermal resources) and the edges of large gravity anomalies (calderas or grabens). Similar revelations should result from the application of these tools to the integration of other mapped datasets from geophysical, geochemical and geological disciplines.

The placer mining industry of the West Coast region of the South Island is based largely around the production of alluvial gold, although other valuable minerals are also present. Since the first major discoveries in 1864-65, reported gold production has totalled around 264 t (8.5 Moz). During the past 10 years, annual production has totalled around 1460 kg (47,000 oz). It is anticipated that gold production over the next three years will continue at a level of 1400-1800 kg.   Annual gold production peaked during 1866 at approximately 17,170 kg (550,000 oz) and has not exceeded 100,000 oz since 1885. This reflects the ease with which gold was won from shallow, rich deposits that were present at many localities. Subsequently, there has been a general decline in the availability of this type of deposit, a trend that will continue in the future. This paper outlines the present state of placer mining in the West Coast region, gives some historical background to the industry and briefly predicts future trends.

Stillwater Mining Co. (SMC) is engaged in developing, extracting, processing and refining palladium, platinum and associated metals (PGM)from the J-M Reef. This geological formation is located in Stillwater, Sweet Grass and Park counties in southern Montana. Associated byproduct metals include rhodium, gold, silver, nickel and copper. SMC’s current mining operations are near Nye, MT. The company is currently developing a second underground palladium and platinum mine, the East Boulder project, about 21 km (13 miles) west of the Nye operations. A 5,650-m (18,550-ft) tunnel is required to gain access to the ore-bearing horizon (J-M Reef).

This study was conducted as part of a project involving the evaluation of a new type of noise exposure monitoring paradigm. Laboratory tests were conducted to assess how “nonstandard” dosimeter microphones and microphone po­sitions measured noise levels under different acoustical condi­tions (i.e., diffuse ?eld and direct ?eld). The data presented in this article re?ect measurement differences due to microphone position and mounting/supporting structure only and are not an evaluation of any particular complete dosimeter system. To varying degrees, the results obtained with the dosimeter microphones used in this study differed from the reference results obtained in the unperturbed (subject absent) sound ?eld with a precision (suitable for use in an ANSI Type 1 sound level meter) 1/2 -inch (12.7 mm) measurement microphone. Effects of dosimeter microphone placement in a diffuse ?eld were found to be minor for most of the test microphones/locations, while direct ?eld microphone placement effects were found to be quite large depending on the microphone position and supporting structure, sound source location, and noise spectrum.

"The risk management objective of the AMIRA Code of Practice for Metal Accounting has seldom been systematically investigated in the literature up to the authors’ knowledge. Risk is defined in the Australian Standard on Risk Management (AS/NZS 4360:2004), as “the chance of something happening that will have an impact on objectives”. The simplified economic analysis performed in this paper has lead to define “something happening” as measurement non-representativity and “impact on objectives” as NSR loss from the optimal NSR. This has pinpointed a missing link being the establishment of a relation between NSR in flotation plants and measurement representativity. The proposed framework, referred to as the total cost of representativity, answers the previously unanswered question of how much accuracy/reproducibility is fit for purpose in a given flotation plant. Authors readily acknowledge that it is way easier to assess the cost of accuracy/reproducibility than the cost of inaccuracy/irreproducibility. However, this exercise not only answers previously unanswered questions but also establishes an essential link with operational excellence. This paper exposes why such operational excellence could neither be attained nor proved without a state of the art metal accounting system. This should impact not only how metal accounting systems are audited/designed/refactored, but also how flotation plants are designed.IntroductionBecause representative metal accounting is a vital source of information for the financial accounts of a mining/metallurgical company, the need for a code on metal accounting was recognized in 2001 and a team was formed in 2003, under the sponsorship of several major mining houses, to produce such a code. Electricity will play a major part in providing energy services in the 21st century. Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD), that is accommodating the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations, will provide a focus for optimising the use of electrical energy. Environmental externalities may redefine the cost structure of electricity. Strong corporate environmental management will ensure that current environmental objectives are met and that future ones, identified by the ESD process and environmental externalities accounting, can be developed and implemented by receptive business managers. This paper addresses the current environmental issues of electricity production. It outlines a management strategy for the SECV becoming a community leader in protecting the environment. ESD is discussed in terms of using non-renewable resources wisely, extending their availability and putting in place mechanisms which ensure their ultimate substitution by renewable resources and conservation. The paper explores options for dealing with costing environmental externalities, particularly in relation to greenhouse emissions.

Due to environmental concerns in urban construction, many typically simple projects become very complex or feasibly impossible. The introduction of relatively new concepts has redefined "impossible", again simplifying these projects and making them "possible". Case Study One covers the use of Pressed-in Tubular Piles on portions of the Long Island Expressway in Queens, New York. Innovations in the design, material and installation method solved many typically inherent problems on projects of this type and resulted in cantilevered walls that supported a 35ft (10.668m) excavation. Design predictions and actual measured deflections of this wall were within millimeters. Case Study Two covers the use of Pressed-in Tubular Piles on portions of the Hodogaya Bypass in Yokohama, Japan. Innovations in equipment development allowed for a cantilevered retaining wall to be constructed without affecting the adjacent right-of-way, dramatic reduction of the overall construction duration and installation of tubular piles in soils with SPT N values greater than 160.

The depletion of iron ore deposits at the face of the mine site dictates the necessity for the exploitation of formerly less attractive orebodies to meet the demand of the modern world. These orebodies will typically be found close to or even beneath the water table where an increasing clay and moisture content will result. Problematic iron ores, colloquially termed as ‘wet and sticky’ material (WSM), can have a significant impact in the material handling stream due to the expensive downtime of processing equipment, which is attributed to the inter-particle and boundary cohesion and adhesion forces of the bulk material.In order to gain a better understanding of the causes of poor handleability, experimental test methods to determine wall adhesion, and inter-particle adhesion within bulk materials were developed. Based on the combination of wall adhesion and inter-particle adhesion measurements, with traditional methods of assessing bulk material handleability, a new method to assess the potential of bulk materials to cause handling problems is proposed. This method reduces the multitude of factors leading to problematic behaviour to a handleability index (HI) [0,1], which is easily assessed and understood. The method is suitable for adhesive materials and applicable for a wide range of material flow, from gravity reclaim stockpiles to transfer chutes and carry back on conveyor belts.Additionally, this research presents an assessment of the HI derived by experimental testing of three iron ore samples. The Biwabik Iron Formation is a ~1.9 billion year-old sequence of iron-rich sedimentary rocks that was metamorphosed at its eastern- most extent by ~1.1 billion year-old intrusions of the Duluth Complex. The metamorphic recrystallization of iron-formation locally produced iron-rich amphiboles and other fibrous iron-silicate minerals. The presence of these minerals in iron-formation along the eastern part of what is known as the Mesabi Iron Range, and their potential liberation by iron mining has raised environmental health concerns. We describe here the geologic setting and mineralogic composition of the Biwabik Iron Formation in and adjacent to the contact metamorphic aureole of the Duluth Complex. The effects of metamorphism are most pronounced within a few kilometers of the contact, and decrease progressively away from it. The contact aureole has been divided into four metamorphic zones?each characterized by the composition and crystal structure of the metamorphic minerals it contains. The recrystallization of iron-formation to iron-rich amphibole minerals (grunerite and cummingtonite) and iron-pyroxene minerals (hedenbergite and ferrohypersthene) is best developed in zones that are most proximal to the Duluth Complex contact. ©2007 Elsevier Inc.
