There is a considerable amount of lignite reserve in the form of thick seams in Turkey. It is rather complicated to predict the characteristics of strata response to mining operation in thick seams. However, a comprehensive evaluation of ground behaviour is a prerequisite for maintaining an efficient production, especially when top coal winning by means of caving behind the face is applied. A comprehensive modelling of deformations and induced stresses is vital for the selection of optimum production strategy. In this study, numerical modelling and analysis of a longwall panel at Omerler underground coalmine have been carried out by using the software called FLAC3D developed based on the finite difference technique. Firstly, a 3-D numerical model of the M3 panel has been prepared. Secondly, induced stresses formed around the longwall face have been determined as a function of face advance where the face was located at the bottom of thick coal-seam. Results obtained from modelling studies have revealed that the front abutment vertical stress was maximum at 7 metres in front of the face and magnitude of front abutment stress was found to increase up to a distance of 200 metres away from the face start line. As the face was further advanced after 200 m from the face start line, there was not any significant change in the characteristics of front abutment stresses. Results of numerical analysis of the panel were in good agreement with in situ observations.

This paper describes a design process for piled raft foundations supporting high-rise buildings. The design process comprises an initial stage of geotechnical site characterization using the results of investigation boreholes to prepare a subsurface model and derive geotechnical parameters for raft and pile design from empirical correlations. Following this a preliminary analysis is undertaken using a combination of elastic theory and allowances for non linear behaviour of the piled raft system to assess the viability of such a foundation system and any potential advantages of a piled raft over conventional fully piled foundation systems. Finally, a detailed analysis is undertaken using the GARP8 computer program. Case studies where this design process has been successfully used to design a more efficient piled raft system that has resulted in significant cost and time savings compared to conventional bored pile foundation options are also described.

The studies herein reported were begun as a part of researches undertaken by the United States Geologü;al Survey looking to the more effcient utilization of the coal in the United States through the reduction of waste in its extnidion, and were continued as part of further researches having regard to the conservation of the fuel resources of this country and to the lessening of injuries and fatalities in coal mining. Among other phases of the general problem to be studied were the origin of the gas whidi escapes into coal mines, its modes of occurrence in the coal and rock strata, and the conditions governing its outflow into the mines. The subject of relative danger from destructive explosions due to gas and coal dust in different mines belonging to different coal fields was to be one of the principal lines of investigation. But this work was barely under way when the series of unusually disastrous explosions in the Naomi, .Monongah, and Darr mines of Pennsylvania and West Virginia, in December, 1907, afforded an exceptional occasion to observe the behavior of explosions on a large scale. Because of the opportunities for study afforded by these terrific explosions, the inquiry originally planned was d ¡verted to the more specific investigation of the conditions in tl10SC mines, and the examinations have been directed toward finding those qualities of gas and dust which were concerned in these explosions. The following discussion, therefore, consists essentially of a report on that subject; but it is far from being exhaustive, and is to be regarded as a preliminary outline of investigations which are still in progress. The first of the three mine explosions mentioned occurred in the Naomi mine of the United Coal Company, near Bellevernon, Pa., on Sunday, December 1, at 7.40 p. m. All the men who were within the mine at the time, fortunately only 34, were killed. Less than a week later there occurred in mines Nos. fì and 8 of the Fairmont Coal Company at Monongah, W. Va., the most disastrous mine explosion yet recorded in the annals of American mining. The mines were comparatively new and well laid out. Mine No.8 had been in operation only about two years and was the pride of the Fairmont Coal Company. Mine No.6 was first opened ahout four years earlier. In order to make it possible, in case of emergency, for either mine to be ventilated by the ventilating system of the other, the two sets of workings were connected underground. The F face heading of mine K o. 6 led direetly into No.2 north heading of No.8 mine. On Friday, Dcccmber 6, at about 10.30 in the morning, an explosion of unusual violcnce swept completely through both mines, pursuing its course throughout the numerous ramifications and bursting out of the two pit mouths, located It miles apart, nearly simultaneously. The slope of mine No.6 was only slightly damaged, but at the mouth of No.8 the destruction was very great. The fan was wrecked, the engine house was demolished, and mine timbers were blown across Monongahela River: As nearly as can be determined, 361 men were killed in the two mines by the explosion. .While the inspection of the Monongah mines was still in progress, on Thursday morning, December 19, at about 11.20, a similar explosion wrecked the Darr mine of the Pittsburgh Coal Company ut Jacobs Creek, Pu.; 238 men lost their lives in this explosion, which in number of casualties is second only to the :Monongah disustcr in the history of American mining. Of ull thc men in the mine at the , time of the explosion, only one mun, who happened to be within 100 feet of the ~iUrface on an old manway in a wet, unexploded portion of the mine, succeeded in escaping alive. The underground investigation of these mines was made in cooperation with Clarence Hall and ""Valter O. Snelling, of the United States Geological Survey, and James ""V. Paul, now of the Survey but at that time chief of the department of mines for vVest Virginia, to all of whom the author is greatly indebted for valuable assistance, suggestions, and advice. Mr. Paul will rcport on the nature of these explosions, the precipitating causes, their destructiveness, and the general cüliditions in these mines following the disasters. The present report is confined essentially to the laboratory examination of some of the explosive materials collected from these mines directly ufter the explosions.

7253. Arkhangelsky, A. D. Geological Results of the General Magnetometric and Gravimetric Surveys of the U.S.S.R. (in Russian). Internat. Geol. Cong., Rep. of the 17th Sess., Moscow-Leningrad, 1937, vol. 1, Moscow, 1939, pp. 241-250. Geophysical methods have been used in the U.S.S.R. to study geological problems. Such is the case of the general magnetometric and gravimetric surveys made jointly by the Main Physical Observatory, Main Office of Geodesy and Cartography, Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism, and Main Office of Geophysical Prospecting. Some institutions supplied the data, others processed them. Geological interpretation was made by the author. (1) Regional magnetic anomalies in the plains of the U.S.S.R. are traceable to the folded substratum overlain by sedimentary rocks; these anomalies promise to yield data characterizing the substratum in respect to strike and depth. Anomalies in European U.S.S.R. suggest that the pre-Cambrian -substratum of the East European plateau consists of elements of different ages. In the most ancient of them, the main strike of the folding is almost latitudinal; in the younger ones, the folding is oriented in the meridian. (2) The Faye and Bouguer gravity anomalies are caused primarily by differences in the density of rocks composing the upper crust and by unknown processes producing changes of density at depth; these processes are not connected with isosiatic movements. The anomalies in the European and adjoining Asiatic U.S.S.R. promise to indicate the volume of the pre-Cambrian massif of the east-European plateau and to clarify the interrelations between the Ural, Tian-Shan, and Donetz Basin folding systems, as well as between the Dnieper-Donetz depression and the mid-European depression. - V. "This document compares the systems of coal classification described under ASTM standards used in Canada to GB standards used in China. A preliminary connection of metallurgical coal classes was set up between the two classifications. In GB classification system, there are nine metallurgical coal groups, namely PS, SM, JM, FM, ½ ZN, RN, 1/3 JM, and QM used in coal blending for coke production. PS coal is almost equivalent to the Low Volatile Bituminous coal; SM, JM, and FM coal groups fall into Low to Medium Volatile Bituminous range; ½ ZN, RN, 1/3 JM, and QM are equivalent to bituminous coal with medium to high volatile matters; QF contains higher volatile bituminous coal compared with High Volatile Bituminous coal. The caking properties commonly used in respective country are also compared in this document. These properties include free swelling index (FSI) and maximum fluidity used in Canada, as well as caking index (GR.I.), and the maximum plastic layer thickness (Y) mainly employed in China. It has been observed that the log of the maximum fluidity has a stronger correlation with the caking index than the Y values. Metallurgical coal processing strategy and typical coking coal product qualities are briefly discussed in the last section of this paper. Currently there is a trend to use heavy medium cyclone in both countries. In Canada the conventional two-product cyclone technology is the preferred practice; whereas in China the three-product heavy medium cyclone arrangement is widely used.INTRODUCTION Coal can be simply classified by applications into two categories: i) thermal coal used to provide heat energy in combustion, and ii) metallurgical coal which is converted to coke, in a carbonization process, and used mainly in the iron and steel industry. Metallurgical coal contains even higher heating values than thermal coal. In addition, it presents unique plastic properties during carbonization which in turn produces a porous solid, high in carbon referred to as coke. Coke is one of the most important raw materials in the iron and steel industry."

Mr. Chairman, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for asking me to your conference, with its most fundamental and appropriate topic of 'Investment in Mining'. I must confess at the outset that I am one of those Australians who has rarely visited your fair land of New Zealand. This is in fact only my third visit, with all three related to Institute Conferences, and all much too brief. In so many ways your country provides a counterpoise to ours, despite the obvious disparities in size and population. And I am not only referring to the Bledisloe Cup! We would certainly each be much more lonely without the other, in this strange long-lost corner of the globe û if globes can have corners. Such an important factor in common in our shared heritages has been the mineral industry we have won from our alluvials and our rocks û especially for gold. So much of the major mineral developments which have supplied the world's appetite for metals and fuels in the past two hundred years has come from the countries settled in that period by people from Europe, especially those from the British Isles. So much of the technology for mineral and metal extraction has come from the skills of those people in New Zealand and Australia. And so much of the further development of metal processing and manufacturing of productive equipment has come from those people and from their cousins throughout the world. It is, I believe, a fair question to ask why we have failed to build on those early and considerable successes, and why we have in so many ways apparently been so content to allow others to add value to our raw materials, and to take our technological developments on to levels far beyond those that our domestic markets could sustain.

Introduction In 1986, the US economy passed the $4 trillion mark. However, the value of domestically processed materials of mineral origin fell slightly to $240 billion. The value of metals produced from US ores was unchanged at $5.6 billion, as was recycled scrap at $4 billion, while the value of industrial minerals rose slightly to $17.9 billion. Consumer demand strongly affects mining and the US economy is relatively saturated with longlived products. Moreover, in recent years there has been a steady increase in consumer, mortgage, and federal debt, inhibiting new purchases of goods. Motor vehicles and housing are major traditional markets for mineral materials. However, the 242 million US citizens already possess 170 million licensed motor vehicles and 92 million dwelling units. In 1986, domestic motor vehicle production fell 3%, to 11.3 million units, while new housing starts rose slightly to 1.8 million units. Nearly all mineral commodities move relatively freely in world trade. As detailed in Figs. 1 and 2, in the last three decades world production of major mineral materials has greatly increased. At present, substantial excess productive capacity exists not only in the US but also in many other countries. Consequently, the US mineral industry is encountering increasing competition from other sources, along with increasing competition from newer, engineered materials. For example, US production of plas¬tics has risen from 900 kt (1 million st) in 1950 to 22.7 Mt (25 million st) in 1986 - on a volume basis significantly greater than steel. Plastics, too, are mineral-based materials, some 7% of petrochemicals going to their manufacture. 1986 saw increased calls for protection. But President Reagan, in his 1987 State of the Union Message and Economic Report to the Congress, reaffirmed adherence to a policy of free and fair trade. However, he stressed the need for increased efforts to open foreign markets to US exports and to increase competitiveness of US industry US imports of mineral-based minerals in 1986 were valued at $40 billion and exports at $24 billion. Strategic minerals As detailed in Fig. 3, imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important materials, including many classified as "strategic and critical." There were no changes in stockpile policy during the year. Congress debated the President's 1985 proposals to reduce stocks of World War II-type materials and to focus more on high technology materials needed for the cutting edge of future military material. But no final action resulted. However, Congressional concern about apartheid in South Africa did result in increasing pressure to limit imports of South African minerals. Meanwhile, the National Critical Materials Council in the Executive Office of the President intensified its efforts to be better able to advise the President. BM37 is a bonanza-grade (>30 ppm Au) ore shoot of the Maria Lode of the Karangahake adularia-sericite epithermal deposit in the southern Hauraki Goldfield. Samples from BM37 contain up to weight percent gold. The ore shoot is a vein that pinches and swells, but is typically tens of cm thick, and locally exceeds 0.5 m in true width. Gold occurs as irregular anhedral electrum grains that range up to 300 microns across and contain 38 to 59 wt per cent Au (ave. 52 wt per cent Au). Electrum occurs in sulphide-rich bands in association with pyrite, chalcopyrite, acanthite, galena, sphalerite, and local covellite. Lower grade samples contain local to rare mckinstryite [(Ag, Cu) 2S] and polybasite [(Ag, Cu) 16 (As, Sb) 2S11]. Pyrite from BM37 is nearly stoichiometric; it lacks the As that commonly occurs at up to percent levels in pyrite from other veins in the goldfield. Acanthite also contains low quantities of trace metals, and typically has less than 2.5 per cent Se. The vein shows complex textures. Bonanza grade sulphide-rich ginguro bands form discrete layers adjacent to the vein margins, and occur as breccia fragments encased by later massive to comb quartz with local quartz after platy calcite. Both the breccia fragments and ginguro bands are cross-cut by later quartz veins. Textures thus indicate that formation of the high-grade portions of BM37 resulted from one or more discrete events that differed markedly from the events that formed the bulk of the vein.

Tunnelling under squeezing ground conditions poses significant challenges. There are fundamental differences in the choice of support for mining as opposed to civil engineering. This paper reviews ground support strategies that have been used to control large deformations in mining excavations based on field data from five different mines in Australia and Canada. Recommendations are made for improved ground control strategies in squeezing rock conditions.

When Bridger Coal Company transformed their operations from surface mining to an underground longwall operation their plans included not only the addition of new mining equipment but also surface fans for a blowing (supply) air ventilation system. The original system concept included a propane gas fired air heater to preheat the intake air during cold weather and a dual parallel fan and duct system. One fan operated to ventilate the mine while the other fan was for stand-by emergency operation. Equipment proposals were submitted in March, 2005 based on the dual parallel fan system. Discussions conducted during the equipment selection process revealed that several alternative system design concepts were available. The alternative concepts included innovation features that not only saved space and cost but also reduced operating expense as well. Many of the features were incorporated into the final design of the system. A comparison of the original system concept and final installation design are presented in the paper in addition to details of the features and the derived benefits.

This paper discusses the pile foundation of tall buildings in Shenzhen region. For 156 constructed tall buildings exceeding 18 storeys, about 86. 5 per cent of the sum. The two main types of foundation used are the semi?machine?bored/slurry drilled cast?in?situ pile and the excavation pile (hand ?dug caisson). The engineering geologiical condition in Shenzhen was analysed. In general, the bed rock level is not too deep. It belongs to hard rock, but the geologic structure is more complex and the tectonic fissures is plenty. According to experiences of the researches, tests, designs and constructions of pile foundation, we present the basic design principle of pile foundations for tall buildings as follows; (1) pile strength control to select the pile type and to choice the cross sectional dimen­sions, must be in compliance with the strength of the pile. (2) bearing stratum strongly weathered, moderartely weathered and slightly weathered rock may be used as the bearing stratum. (3) bearing pile bored /drilled cast-in-situ pile designed as an end bearing pile. (4) friction pile precast concrete pile, prestressed concrete tubular pile and driven cast-in-situ pile designe as a friction pile. In case, pile design is in compliance with these principles, it may be safe, economical and reasonable.

This work has for objectives to characterize a waste generated in the form of sludge during the treatment of the effluent of a paper making industry and to evaluate the effect of its incorporation in the amount of 10 wt.% on the properties and microstructure of a clayey body used for brick production. For the characterization of the waste the following techniques were used: X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, differential thermal analysis and termogravimetric analysis. Incorporated bricks were produced in industrial scale before firing at 750°C in a Modified Caieira type furnace. The physical and mechanical properties evaluated were water absorption and compression strength. The microstructure of the fired ceramic was evaluated by optical microscopy. The environmental evaluation was made by solution test and atmospheric emission by monitoring the release of SO2, NOx and particulate material. The results showed that, in agreement with the characteristics of the waste, its recycling into red ceramic can contribute to decrease the consumption of fuel during the firing stage. The properties of the fired ceramic attend the norms. With respect to the environmental aspect, the incorporation of the waste did not impact the environment.

"The mode of ore occurrence and the methods and costs of mining at one of the zinc-lead mines in the Tri-State zinc and lead district, Oklahoma, are presented in this paper for the information of mine operators in other districts.No. 2 mine property was acquired by lease in 1918 after some 30 holes had been drilled and a shaft had been sunk to the 305-foot level by the first lessees. After acquisition of the lease, the present operating company drilled a rich ore body on the 260-foot level and in 1920 started sinking two shafts. Production was begun late in 1921, and the mine has been operated more or less continuously to the present time.The mill has a capacity of 400 tons in 10 hours, the usual length of the mill shift in the district.The geology of Mine No. 2 is very similar to that of Mine No. 13 except that the Cherokee shale is thicker, ranging from 80 to 160 feet, and all the formations are correspondingly deeper, the Short Creek oolite horizon here being at a depth of about 300 feet. The oolite has not been found on this property, but the lime comes in at about the level at which the oolite should appear.The ore deposits of Mine No. 2 occur in the brecciated and bowlder ground above the Short Creek oolite. The main or 260-foot level is about 40 feet above the oolite horizon, and the lower or 300-foot level is immediately above it.The ore deposition is controlled by a zone of shearing and fracturing, and the mineable areas are divided into two distinct runs which have a northwest trend with a lean or practically barren area dividing them. This characteristic has controlled the mining to a large extent, for it enables the mine superintendent to locate the large pillars in lean ore and leave only small pillars in the richer ore. Figure 1 shows the outlines of the ore body and the pillars.The ore on the main level occurs disseminated throughout the jasperoid breccia as patches or lenses in the jasperoid, or cementing massive bowlders of jasperoid breccia and chert. The ore of the lower level is more of the bowlder type than that on the main level and occurs chiefly cementing the bowlders but also with some disseminated ore in the jasperoid breccia.The gangue minerals are jasperoid breccia, chert, and dolomite. Calcite is found in minor quantities. Sphalerite is the principal ore mineral; galena is found only in minor quantities around the edges of the ore body. When galena is encountered in this ore body, the limit of the ore can be expected.The exploration and estimation of ore reserves at Mine No. 2 are similar in many respects to the methods used at Mine No. 1.4After the mine was opened up and the general character of the ore deposit had been determined, drilling operations were concentrated along the trend of the shear zone. Later drilling has proved what appears to be a parallel shear zone or an offset of the zone now being mined."

A reliable laboratory method to characterize the response of free gold particles to flash flotation conditions has been developed. The test has been performed on free milling gold ores as well as synthetic ores, using either a gravity concentrate or gold powder as the gold source, to assess the floatability of gold particles. Trends in free gold flotation kinetics, as well as size and milling effects, were identified for gold recovery based on the different feed types, reagent dosages, and residence times. It was shown that the ultimate recoveries and kinetic trends of gold particles from the gravity concentrate could be enhanced with increased dosage of collector, potassium amyl xanthate. Interestingly, in comparison to gravity-recoverable gold, recovery from pure Au powders was better in collectorless flotation, and cumulative recovery decreased with higher levels of collector addition. Improved coarse particle recovery appeared linked to increased collector additions for both the gravity concentrate and the pure gold powders. In general, coarse gold particles demonstrated slower kinetic rates thaen the fine or intermediate components incomparable tests.

"SynopsisGibb Consulting Services was contracted by Eskom Line Engineering Services to conduct an investigation to determine the absolute displacement to date and infer the current rate of displacement of unsurveyed colliery backfill.At the test site, where a 400 kV power line is to be constructed, neither the surface nor the backfill material had been monitored and it was not possible to state whether the surface will be subject to future settlement that may compromise surface infrastructure. Therefore indirect methods of estimating current and future displacements needed to be found to act as a proxy for a comprehensive long-term settlement monitoring exercise and provide a reasonable estimate for the settlement that has occurred in the decades of mining.The innovative solution was to recover essentially undisturbed core from backfill using a sonic drill rig and use the measured dry density values from the samples as a proxy for the rate and absolute displacement in the backfill.The success in obtaining an essentially undisturbed backfill core and the clear relationship of the backfill density with age and depth allowed the conclusion to be issued that the power line infrastructure can be constructed over the backfill; with a warning that once the water table recovers after mining ceases some collapse settlement may occur.With this method, the amount of settlement can be predicted and, if proven conclusively, provides a way to confidently release huge areas of currently waste ground for future surface infrastructural development.IntroductionIn coal mining, it is normal mining practice to backfill the newly mined-out voids with the excavated waste rock and soils. As there is no requirement for the mining companies to uniformly compact the spoil or accurately monitor surface or inter-backfill displacement, these backfilled voids are prone to differential compaction and consolidation settlement. They are therefore avoided as sites for future surface infrastructure work, especially for linear structures such as roads, railways, and power lines."

Mining companies and contractors are looking at Wirtgen Surface Miners to provide flexibility at their operations. Wirtgen Surface Miners have been used in the surface mining industry for over fifteen years. The principle behind the Wirtgen Miner is a rotating drum equipped with tungsten carbide tipped cutting tools that excavates and sizes the material. The drum helix augurs the mined material to the center of the drum where it is loaded onto the primary conveyor belt. From there the material is conveyed to the discharge belt and into a truck bed. The cutting drum is located in the center of the machine, near the center of gravity. This permits the machine to cut hard materials as the entire machine weight is converted into cutting forces. Conventional mining practices are process, equipment, and labor intensive. Furthermore, strict environmental requirements pertaining to noise levels, dust pollution, and blasting, near buildings or urban areas, limit the application of conventional methods. Mining/ Construction contractors are using Wirtgen Miners in various limestone excavation projects, such as highway expansion projects, and new roads in housing developments. Mining companies in the industrial minerals and coal industry are using Wirtgen Miners to load directly onto trucks, eliminating the rehandling process and ultimately, primary crushers.

The only economically significant mineral exploited in Banglades - during 1981 was natural gas. Nitrogenous fertilizer production was important to the agricultural sector and was totally dependent on the natural gas for fuel and raw material. Domestic cement plants were also fu pled by natural gas. The flat river-delta terrain for most of Bangladesh makes the potential for discovering major mineral deposits poor. No large deposits of metal ores have been found and only in the small hilly southeastern section of the country is there even much chance of finding any. Heavy mineral sand deposits may eventually be exploited along the Chittagong coastline. There is a good potential for crude oil discoveries. The Bangladesh economy has been heavi¬ly subsidized by billions of dollars of foreign aid since the country's inception. A World Bank report recommended total aid needs of over $2.6 billion in fiscal year (FY) 1980-81. It received commitments for barely over one-half that amount.

The Downhole Seismic Imaging consortium was initiated by the Geological Survey of Canada and three Canadian mining companies to assess the usefulness of borehole seismic techniques for the exploration of massive sulphide deposits within areas of steeply dipping stratigraphy. Field tests were conducted over two sub-economic massive sulphide deposits located in Norman West, Ontario, and Halfmile Lake, New Brunswick, using various shot configurations and a three-component borehole receiver array. The Norman West deposit, or structures associated with the deposit, produce detectable seismic reflections as far away as 1500 m. However, these reflections are difficult to distinguish from fault reflections and lithological contacts near the base of the Sudbury Igneous Complex. At Halfmile Lake, the rock properties are favourable for direct orebody detection. The Halfmile Lake deposit has a clear but relatively complex seismic signature on the downhole data, showing not only P-wave reflections, but also strong reflected S-waves and modeconverted waves. Such prominent S-waves and converted waves have not been recognized previously in borehole or surface seismic data acquired over massive sulphide deposits. These waves add complexity to the interpretation but provide additional imaging capabilities. Reflected S-waves and converted waves should be considered when designing seismic surveys for mineral exploration.

A jet pump injector was developed and successfully tested, thereby demonstrating the feasibility of a jet injector for introducing coarse coal into an operating slurry face haulage system: In Phase I a variety of injection concepts were evaluated, and the jet pump was identified as best, due to its simplicity, compactness and performance potential. In Phase IIA subscale jet pump injector tests were conducted, and a computer model of a jet pump injector was developed whose performance predictions correlated well with subscale test results. In Phase IIB various system configurations were defined for integrating a jet pump injector into a fully operational underground coarse slurry face haulage system, further highlighting the feasibility and practicality of such a system. In Phase III a full-scale mobile haulage vehicle embodying a jet pump injector and coal sizing equipment was detail designed into a practical vehicle with attractive performance characteristics. More importantly, fully operational full scale jet pump injector -and feeder/breaker subassemblies were tested and proven successful in their ability to down-size coal to 3" in all 3 dimensions and to consistantly provide slurry of 4217 weight concentration at 6.4 TPM throughput under a wide range of operating conditions including zero to maximum feed rate within 5 seconds.

"Quantitative information about the quality of metal balance results is often overlooked when making important plant production planning decisions. Not only is this common omission made in a context where many measurements taken in and around mineral processing plants carry significant errors, but it also conflicts with the AMIRA P754 Code of Practice for Metal Accounting. The fact that metal balances are typically published without any indication of data quality may give the wrong impression that the measurements are unquestionably accurate. While it is true that statistical data reconciliation can improve the confidence intervals of redundant variables, there is no data processing technique that brings them down to zero at a finite cost. In this paper, we review the entire data flow, starting from field instruments to metal accounting-based decision-making to show how measurement errors are transmuted into business risks associated with production planning. Necessary conditions for first exposing then quantifying such business risks are stated. Pitfalls to be avoided are also discussed. Finally, a simplified risk assessment and management procedure which considers the quality of metal balance results are applied to a polymetallic mineral processing plant. INTRODUCTION Each and every mineral processing plant has production reporting obligations. In this paper, we are concerned with metal accounting reports (Morrison, 2008) where saleable metal flows and inventories are estimated and published. These metal accounting reports are delivered to a variety of stakeholders who use them for internal management purposes (day-to-day plant production planning, plant operation optimisation, capital spending, etc.) as well as for external management (royalty settlements, tolling agreements, etc.). Hence, there should be no doubt that spotless metal accounting is instrumental to high-quality corporate governance (Gaylard et al., 2014) of mining and metallurgical companies. To this extent, one would have expected industry-endorsed standards to have emerged a long time ago. However, the lack of an accepted set of standard procedures for metallurgical accounting was explicitly recognized as an industry-wide problem only in August 2001 during an SAIMM workshop held in Cape Town, South Africa. Discussions that followed this workshop led to the initiation of the AMIRA Project P754, “Metal Accounting and Reconciliation”, in 2003."
