Within the first full year of BarrickÆs Cowal Gold Mine operation, the Lake Cowal Foundation Limited (LCF) has already been delivering results consistent with its goal to protect and enhance the natural environment of Lake Cowal and its catchment area. The LCF is a non-profit Environmental Trust established in June 2000 in conjunction with the development consent process for the construction of BarrickÆs Cowal Gold Mine. Its primary goal is to protect and enhance Lake Cowal, a nationally significant ephemeral wetland located 350 km west of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Significant concentrations of water birds visit the lake and the Australian Heritage Commission listed Lake Cowal on the Register of the National Estate in 1992. The LCF is managed by a Board of Directors from representative member organisations including the Total Environment Centre, National Parks Association, Nature Conservation Council and Barrick Australia Limited. Although largely funded by Barrick, the Foundation also attracts external funding and works in partnership with a diverse range of other groups and organisations, beyond the mine fence. The total value of currently approved projects is estimated to be in excess of $7.1 million, which includes æin-kindÆ contributions made by the local community and in particular the Lachlan Catchment Management Authority (LCMA) and local farmers. To date, LCF has been involved with the development and implementation of 30 projects with a total of 34 project partners. LCF has worked with over 60 landholders to improve Lake Cowal and its catchment, with 6180 ha of land now being managed for conservation or sustainable farming in the local area. Many landholders have been, or are involved in property planning or participating in other training opportunities. Sustainability of LCF programs and outcomes will be assured by commitments to projects within four key themes: conservation, research and research support, sustainable farming and community education and training. The LCF works independently from the mining company and has no responsibility for the environmental management within the mining lease. It is about capitalising resources generated by the mine to enhance environmental outcomes in the wider Lake Cowal catchment area by working collaboratively with the local community, industry and government authorities to ensure the long-term protection of a unique wetland ecosystem affected by landscape scale degradation.

Determining the minimum amount of inert material that can be used between explosive columns is a complex problem. Using too little inert material can result in detonator/primer failure, either by sympathetic detonation of or failure to fire of the subsequent explosive column(s). Propagation type failure results when inert material length between charges is small enough that the subsequent (delayed) deck fires more or less instantly. In this situation, the primer, detonator, or bulk product is initiated by the shock wave from the earlier firing deck. This type of failure may be un-noticed until the vibration/airblast report is examined.

Strategic planning in mining is an important value accretive process. One of the most important aspects during the planning phase is determining the correct mine and plant design. The traditional mine site design (mine, plant, stockpiles, dumps) develops a fixed system for one set of conditions or expected values. A robust design is a fixed system that is designed to deal with a large range of conditions without changing the system design. A flexible design changes the system dynamically in response to changes in uncertainties. It is hypothesised that a robust design generates less value than a flexible design as it fails to realise the value of actively managing the operation. One of the most critical aspects in creating strategic value from a project is embedded in the design of the system. A flexible design has components that allow the design of the system to change over time. An operational plan is proposed as a hybrid of a robust and flexible design. This paper seeks to compare these different design methodologies. An analysis of the same case study is undertaken to compare these approaches, showing an a traditional net present value (NPV) of $1678 M, robust design NPV of $1787 M and an operational plan NPV of $1867 M - an increase of $170 M.

Working in thick coal seams presents many problems, included in these is obtaining the maximum recovery of coal under safe working conditions. In order to obtain maximum extraction it is important to understand the behaviour of pillars left for support purposes. However it is not always the practice to maintain pillar stability it is often required to design for pillar failure. The greatest hazard of pillar mining is uncontrolled pillar collapse. Many major and relatively minor collapses of pillar workings have been recorded in the history of mining. Notable among the collapses was that at Coalbrook Colliery in South Africa in 1960 (Bryan et al 1964). This led to recommendations on the design of bard and pillar workings in South Africa. (Salamon 1967) These design recommendations were based on the statistical analysis of stable and unstable pillar workings and introduced the concept of probability of pillar failure and safety factor. On the basis of this study a safety factor of 1.6 was prescribed for production panels in South Africa. A general review of pillar design procedures, reveals that a new phase of reinterpretation and modification is in progress. This takes into account for instance the effect method of working, whether by conventional drilling and blasting or continuous miner, has on coal pillar strength, and the necessity to review the methods for increasing depth of working. Also, as more is being understood about overall rock mass properties and advanced computer modelling techniques become more readily available, the mine planning engineer is faced with numerous approaches to pillar design.

Attempts are made to evaluate the feasibility of using a water-injection cyclone for the concentration of iron ore fines. The separation characteristics of clay fines, containing large amounts of alumina and silica, from the iron values are discussed. The effects of critical variables, such as injection water rate, truncated cone diameter, spigot opening and vortex finder diameter, on the performance of a water-injection cyclone in terms of iron, alumina and silica grades; iron recoveries; and alumina and silica rejections are discussed. A set of 16 full-factorial experiments (24) was carried out to gain an understanding of the individual and interaction effects of the variables. The results indicate that classifying iron ore fines containing 63.0% iron, 2.5% alumina and 3.5% silica through a water-injection cyclone can produce concentrates with iron grades greater than 66.0% and alumina and silica contents less than 1.5% and 2.0%, respectively, at different study conditions. The achievable iron recovery values are greater than 88%, and alumina and silica rejections are more than 80% and 50%, respectively, within the specific study conditions. While the truncated cone diameter, injection water rate and spigot diameter influences the alumina rejection to a considerable extent, it is mostly influenced by the vortex finder diameter. The iron recovery and silica rejection values are mostly influenced by spigot diameter and truncated cone diameter. The effect of injection water on the concentration characteristics depend on the prevalent truncated cone diameter and spigot diameter conditions.

The Western Australian gold industry has approximately 100 operating plahts, mainly CIP/CIL. The nature of the State's rapidly expanding gold industry gave rise to concerns over management of the  cyanide hazard, in that most plants are remote from major population centres, have a workforce with a high tum over and use highly saline process water. Approximately 4500 workers in the industry have the potential to be exposed to cyanide in the course of their normal work.   This paper outlines the risk management strategy developed by Government and industry to monitor atmospheric HCN gas in the work environment and the role of continuing education and training along with regular site inspections by Department of Mines Inspectors.

Newly published models suggest that some orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits formed by the remobilisation of trace elements during interaction with hydrothermal or metamorphic fluids from early sedimentary pyrite that was enriched in Au, As and Te. The released trace elements are transported by the fluids to favourable trap sites where they are deposited. Therefore, early enrichment of Au, As and Te in source rocks (particularly in pyritic black shale) can be crucial to the formation of orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits.The most important cause of the enrichment of gold and other trace elements in the sedimentary basins has been examined in this study to determine which basins are the most prospective for the development of orogenic gold deposits. An important influence for Au and other associated trace element accumulation in sedimentary pyrite is the temporal variation of trace element content in the oceans, as revealed by a database of over 1400 analyses of pyrite from black shale through geologic time. It is inferred that sediments coeval with those where sedimentary pyrite is enriched in Au and associated trace elements are more likely to be source rocks of orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits.Factor analysis of the trace element content of pyrite through geologic time was conducted to investigate the multivariate relationships amongst trace elements and how these chemical factors explain the uptake of trace elements. One important factor includes Te, Au, Pb and Bi content. The incorporation of these large cations into pyrite is enhanced by As3+ substituting for Fe in pyrite lattice. The As3+ ion occurs in relatively oxidised environments and, thus, it is expected that shales deposited in non-euxinic waters are better source rocks for orogenic gold deposits.The examination of both the time in which the sediments were deposited and the redox conditions of the basin, and the ocean more broadly, can be used as a guide to approximate the extent of a basin’s fertility. The mechanics of load transfer in bord-and-pillar mining is not well understood despite the evolution of the art of pillar extraction over the last 20 years via trial and error (empirical) or Rock Mass Rating (RMR), simple monitoring and pillar extraction experiences at neighboring mines. Variations in geologic conditions and pillar extraction methods, along with a lack of comprehensive instrumentation programs for monitoring ground behavior during pillar recovery, are among the factors that make it difficult to predict how strata will respond to pillar extraction. Efficient and safe use of roof supports depends on the interaction between the designed support and coal strata. Of particular interest in this study is the mechanics of strata deformation as influenced by geologic conditions, pillar extraction methods and optimum support with load-bearing capabilities in strata control during mass exploitation of underground coal deposits required detailed investigation,?. To provide a better understanding of the mechanics of strata deformation, as researchers, we have collected data and reviewed measurements of convergence and stress in one mine of South Eastern Coalfields Limited (S.E.C.L.), i. e., in North Chirimiri Pondary Hills (NCPH) and have completed numerical modeling with FLAC software for (Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua modeling, Itasca India Consulting Pvt. Ltd.) for two typical pillar extraction plans. Stress distribution in the mine roof above pairs of roof supports was calculated to demonstrate how Resin roof bolt support installed support contributed to roof block movement control. It was shown that overall stress and roof-floor convergence patterns were most influenced by the stiffness of coal measure rocks and by pillar extraction sequences and layouts. Also, resin roof bolts and other support systems play a critical role in controlling stability of both the immediate roof and the main roof for a distance of up to 18 meters (i.e., working coal seam height X three times) above the seam. Installed supports provide unique strata control advantages over other types of secondary support by significantly reducing the time between mining and installation of the secondary support. Although resin roof bolts are similar to posts in stiffness and capacity, they are more effective than posts under static loads because they can yield and still maintain loads at nearpeak capacity(Singh, et al., 2006), whereas posts fail and lose their ability to limit mine roof deformation.

Lake Mead, the largest man-made reservoir in the United States, is located about 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. For the construction of Lake Mead third water intake, which is entirely placed underground, an underwater excavation was needed at a depth of 100 m (330 ft): a large surface had to be deepened by 20 m (66 ft) in basalt.

A detailed study of the capital investment and production cost for copper electrowinning plants shows that significant savings in both can be achieved by increasing the current density. From the economic analysis it is determined that the optimum current density which will result in lowest capital investment and lowest operating cost is between 60 A/sq. ft. and 70 A/sq. ft., or at least three times as high as the Conventionally employed current density. The specific investment, expressed as $/ton-year, is found to be a function of both the current density and plant capacity and has a minimum value at the optimum current density. Empirical equations are developed for the purpose of estimating the capital investment and operating cost for plants of any production capacity operating at any current density.

Silica reacts with cryolite at 1010°C in two stages. The first stage is the formation of a sodium aluminosilicate of composition consistent with the mineral jadeite (Na20.AI20s.4Si02). The formation proceeds by atleast two different reactions. Formation of alumina or an aluminosilicate proceeds to its limiting value in the first 30 min while the formation of jadeite proceeds at a steady rate until quantitative conversion is achieved after 150 min. The net overall reaction can be expressed by the equation 6 Si02+2 Na3AlF6? (Na20.AI20s.4Si02) +2 SiF4 +4NaF.The second stage involves a slow reaction that proceeds with the evolution of a little SiF4, The net result is the formation of sodium aluminosilicates that are soluble in 30 per cent AlCIs-HCI solutions. While this could be explained by disproportionation of jadeite to form albite (Na20.Al203.6Si02) and nepheline (Na20. AI203.2Si02), it is more likely that it is due to further but limited reaction between the oxides and fiuoroaluminates.

The mineral matter has been isolated from a selection of Australian bituminous coals using low temperature (radio-frequency) oxidation or hydrogen peroxidation techniques and the species present identified by x-raydiffraction. Quartz, kaolinite, and a range of mixed layer clay minerals are the dominant constituents of the coals studied, with carbonate, sulphate, and phosphate minerals abundant in some samples. The clay bands thatoccur within these coal seams contain similar mineral assemblages to the coals themselves, but the lutites that form the inter-seam strata have a markedly different mineralogy, characterized by abundant quartz andillite and a low kaolinite content.The kaolinite is thought to have formed chiefly by interaction of silica and alumina in the waters of the coal swamp, aided by the catalytic action of organic acids, while most of the other clay minerals are probablydetrital. The absence of illite from Australian coals is not fully understood, but it may reflect the action of organic acids on the detritus in the swamp, coupled with deposition in freshwater rather thanmarine conditions. Pyrite, although present in some coal samples when fresh, may undergo oxidation during storage to form a number of sulphate minerals, some of which may interact with any calcite present toform gypsum.The mineral matter assemblage in the coal determines to a great extent the fusion characteristics of the ash.Unless abundant carbonates are present, coals with kaolinite-rich assemblages have a very refractory ash, while those rich in chlorite or montmorillonite have ash fusion temperatures between 1000 and 1300°C. Theinfluence of the minerals on coal preparation and coking properties is also brieflY discussed, as well as the potential of mineral matter studies in coal seam correlation.

"Gold bearing deposits of the Witwatersrand basin are generally less than 2m thick and require conventional narrow-reef mining methods for extraction and employ explosives as a means of rock breaking. Optimal utilization of explosives is dependent on the overall design of the blast. The under-utilization of explosives arises when shot-holes are drilled inconsistently, overcharged, and when tamping is absent. This can be rectified by emphasizing the importance of good drilling practices as part of induction programmes and refresher courses. The project was aimed at determining whether or not explosives are being optimally utilized at project site. This was investigated through a study of the properties of explosives, mine standards, and recommendations for usage. Underground observations were made to determine whether or not mine standards were being adhered to. Historic data was obtained to establish the historic relationship existing between the quantity of explosives used (kg) and the production output (m2). This was then compared to the quantity of explosives the mine expects to use per unit of production. The results obtained were analysed to determine the presence and extent of over- or under-utilization. It was found that explosives are being under-utilized at the mine. More explosives are ordered than expected per unit of production. The explosives’ properties are not thoroughly exploited during blasting, thereby requiring the use of more explosives than prescribed. An international prediction event was carried out within the framework of a 30-pile testing program organized in a sandy soil in Belgium (Limelette). That program called upon sev­eral testing methods: static load tests, Statnamic testing, and dynamic testing. This paper provides a summary of received predictions and results obtained from the static pile load tests, which were carried up to failure of the instrumented piles. The comparison between predictions is made using load-settlement curves with reference to the results of the static load tests. The predictions are based on a geotechnical approach using an extensive soil investigation program and a dynamic approach using the dynamic load test data.

A working understanding of present coal mine communications equipment and its usage is an essential prerequisite to the determination of future communications systems needs. As a means of gaining this understanding, a field survey program was planned and implemented. The plan formulated called for obtaining both qualitative and quantitative data from three main areas of interest: the types, physical condition, and performance characteristics of equipment presently used in the sample of mines to be visited; the relationship present communications has to safety and productivity; and the practical, future communications needs as derived through interviews with present mine management. In compliance with the original plan, the type and physical condition of equipment in use was found through at-mine interviews of personnel responsible for installation and maintenance. Further evaluation was made through the review of equipment instruction books and maintenance manuals and through in-mine inspection of communications equipment and signal distribution networks. The performance characteristics were determined through listening to conversations and noise levels and by talk-testing from randomly selected stations throughout each mine. System operation was evaluated by asking communication system users their opinions and by noting any difficulties personnel had using the systems.

Six different types of quartz and quartzites used as raw materials by ferroalloy plants have been investigated with respect to their thermo mechanical properties. In order to investigate the effect of the thermal shock caused by the rapid heating of quartz when it enters the furnace, the following techniques have been used for both in situ investigations and investigations of pre-heated quartz: -Heating stage microscopy for in situ observation of heating effects. -Shock heating of quartz in an induction furnace An optical microscope-mounted heating stage was used for in situ observations of the microscopic effects of heating up to 1300 ºC. The effects of heating were observed at different temperature intervals in different samples. The main temperature intervals were below 573 ºC and above 1000 ºC. The cause of the observed effects is interpreted as fluid inclusion decrepitation for T<573 °C and structural implications (micro cracks, grain boundaries and remaining fluid inclusions) at T>1200 °C. Shock heating of the samples was carried out in an induction furnace to 1300 ºC for ten minutes. The effects of the heating were studied with different techniques such as direct observation during and directly after heating, optical microscopy and XRD. Combined transmitted and fluorescence light microscopy shows that the heated quartz show an opening of the grain boundaries and evenly distributed micro cracks that were not present in the unheated reference samples. In some of the heated samples, weak generation of cristobalite was detected by XRD.

"This paper outlines the history of steel linings in the Autogenous Mills, the factors influencing the decision to convert to rubber lining, and the operating and cost experience with the rubber liners to date. INTRODUCTIONSherman Mine is an open pit iron ore mining, concentrating and pelletizing operation located at Temagami, Ontario. The operation employs 392 hourly employees and 81 salaried employees and has an annual capacity of over one million L.T. of high quality iron ore pellets produced from low-grade magnetite ore.The Sherman Mine is a joint venture; 90% owned by Dominion Foundries and Steel Limited (Dofasco) of Hamilton, Ontario, and 10% owned by the Tetapaga Mining Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company of Cleveland, Ohio. The operation and management of the mine is by Cliffs of Canada, Limited. Development of the property was started in 1965, with pellet plant production beginning on March 17, 1968. At the present time, the orebodies contain sufficient reserves to sustain operations at current production levels for 30 years. Mining was originally carried out in three orebodies, the North, South, and West pits. The North Pit has been exhausted and mining operations ceased in the spring of 1980. A fourth pit, the East Pit, will be developed during the early 1980's."
