"The Functional Performance Equation calculated from a plant grinding survey defines two distinct ball mill circuit efficiencies and how they relate to total production rate through the target grind size. The survey data are also used to calculate a complete ball mill size distribution model, represented by the energy specific grinding rates, not just through the target grind size, but through all the size classes. Cyclone separation performance is represented by individual size recoveries to underflow. When these two unit operation performances are entered into the circuit modelling program (Streamline™), along with the circuit feed rate and size distribution, all the circuit survey size distributions and mass flows are perfectly regenerated by the program. The many issues associated with the historical Epstein (breakage-selection) models are eliminated. Once the circuit program is populated, pump and cyclone performance changes can be evaluated using a step-by-step procedure in order to maximize Classification System Efficiency. Mill water use and media sizing opportunities are also diagnosed in order to maximize Mill Grinding Efficiency at the size of interest. An example is provided. This circuit analysis and modelling system, and related training, is provided through a web-based application.IntroductionSince its development (McIvor, 1988), the Functional Performance Equation for ball milling has facilitated new understanding of industrial circuit cause and effect relationships, leading to significant strides in operational performance. Success stories of this refreshing approach to plant circuit performance improvement are now too numerous to list. Finch and McIvor (circa 1986) also discovered that the Functional Performance “Mill Grinding Rate” at the size of interest was the same cumulative grinding rate that is calculated from mill feed and discharge size distributions using a first-order rate equation. By calculating these cumulative grinding rates for all screen sizes, a complete ball mill model is generated (as used by Finch and Ramirez, 1981). Others in industry, Hinde and Kalala (2009), for example, have noted the same. Lacking the complexity needed to maintain their interest, most researchers have ignored this model, broadly opting instead for Epstein’s (1948) characterization of grinding as a chemical reaction, combining “selection rate” and “breakage size distribution” functions. The much simpler ball mill model presented here has previously been incorporated into a proprietary circuit modeling program (McIvor, 2005) and used for plant improvement work (for example, see McIvor and Finch, 2007, and McIvor, 2014). Now, by combining this extremely business-friendly ball mill model with optimization criteria from Functional Performance Analysis, a circuit modeling system (including the needed supplementary steps to assure successful plant implementation of circuit design changes) is at the disposal of every plant metallurgist, grinding equipment/material provider, and circuit designer."

INTRODUCTION The Metropolitan Boston Transit Authority (MIA) Red Line has served greater Boston commuter needs from its Harvard Square terminus since its opening in 1912. Since then, the population of Boston's northwest area has increased substantially, and with this growth have come dramatic changes in the type and distribution of urban land uses, including the number of households, jobs, shopping and recreational opportunities; these changes have created a need for improved transportation. Extension of the Red Line to better serve these communities has been a topic of discussion for nearly 40 years. In November of 1977, the Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA) granted the MBTA approval and funding for the Red Line Extension Project. With funding in place, the MBTA proceeded with final engineering and construction of the section from Harvard Square to Alewife. When completed, the Red Line Extension will add 3.2 miles of new track to the MBTA system. Estimated final cost is about $400 million. On October 3, 1978, the MBTA received bids for the construction of Project 091-105, Harvard Square to Porter Square Tunnels and Shafts, which is part of the overall Red Line Extension. The Joint Venture of Morrison-Knudsen, White, Mergentime was the low bidder at $47,478,600. Official award of the contract came on October 25, 1978, with Notice to Proceed given October 31, 1978. "INTRODUCTION The inability of Alaska coal mines to supply the quantity of coal required by public and private consumers and by the armed forces in Alaska caused the Coal Procurement Section of the Alaska Department, U. S. Army, to be established. It proposed to investigate the coal deposits and to expedite production of coal. The Bureau of Mines has closely cooperated in this program and was in direct charge of exploration. As to develop and equip an underground coal mine would have taken time and the need for coal was acute, a deposit that could be prepared for mining quickly was desirable. Several such deposits of stripping coal were known to occur in the Nenana field and were examined by the Bureau. One of these, the Diamond strip mine 4 miles west of Healy, was brought into production late in the fall of 1943. This mine was operated for the Army Coal Procurement Section by the C. F. Lytle Co. and the Green Construction Co.The Roth property, or Leasing Block No. 28, in the Healy Creek Valley offered the largest available tonnage of both stripping coal and total reserves. A program of exploration by the Bureau of Mines was inaugurated in 1943 and completed in 1944. Field parties of the Federal Geological Survey mapped the area had correlated the coal beds during the 1944 and 1945 summer seasons."

The design of separation circuits can be a complex, labor-intensive and costly process. While the engineer?s experience along with extensive data sets and simulation are crucial tools for determining the final solution, a more fundamental approach is suitable to compare preliminary options and reduce the number of potential alternatives. In light of this need, the authors have developed the Circuit Analysis Reduction Tool (CART?). This software package relies on the fundamental principles of linear circuit analysis; however, the solution methodology has been streamlined to automatically incorporate stream splitting and unique separation performance for each unit. The resulting tool allows preliminary analysis of circuit designs without the need of detailed feed characterization. In addition to the basic analytical approach, this paper supports the veracity of the methodology with several simulated examples for various separation models.

Abstract - The essential aims of additional borehole drilling are to improve the reliability of grade and tonnage estimates in each reserve class and to increase ore tonnages. The "GET" function presented in this paper considers strategies for achieving both of these goals simultaneously, and therefore is advantageous for selecting sites for additional boreholes. The "GET" function is either a linear or a non-linear product of three variables G, E, and T: f(G,E,T,) = G??E??T??where the values of any or all of the exponents ?, ?, and ??may differ from unity at the discretion of the user. G and E are the average estimated block grade and the average estimation error for ore blocks in one vertical column, and T is the compounded ore thickness within the column. To illustrate its utility, the GET function has been used for determination of the most advantageous sites for additional drilling in the Shah-Kuh Pb-Zn deposit in west central Iran.

A portable, stand-alone instrument especially designed for recording strong ground motion was used in this study to create a large database of peak particle velocities measured underground. A total number of 39 sites located in stopes mining Carbon Leader and Ventersdorp Contact Reefs were investigated. Peak particle velocities whith values up to 3 m/s were recorded at some sites. The data recorded on the skin of the excavations were compared to the data recorded by the mine seismic networks to determine the site response. The maximum site response was obtained for source radii of between 5 m and 30 m and events locating within 200 m of the site. The extreme values of peak particle velocities were obtained in cases were the face-area lay within the source radius. Un instrument portable unique spécifiquement conçu pour enregistrer les mouvements dynamiques des terrains, a été utilisé dans cette étude pour créer une base de données importante sur la vélocité maximum des particules, mesurée en souterrain. Un nombre total de 39 sites situés dans les excavations exploitant les récifs appelés ‘Carbon Leader et Ventersdorp Contact Reefs’, a été investigué. Une vélocité maximale avec des valeurs allant jusqu’ à 3 m/s a été enregistrée sur certains sites. Les données enregistrées sur le bord de l’excavation ont été comparées aux données enregistrées par les réseaux séismiques de la mine pour déterminer la réponse du site. La réponse maximum du site a été obtenue pour des sources de rayons entre 5 m et 30 m et des évènements situés dans les 200 m du site. The objective of this task was to perform theoretical analyses related to identifying and increasing the understanding of wireless propagation mechanisms in mines, and for predicting the performance ranges and limitations of proposed systems. This was to be achieved by building on and extending previous ADL work* and utilizing experimental data as they became available in the radio frequency bands of interest. B. TASKS Theoretical radio wave propagation investigations undertaken on this task centered on three areas. The first area dealt with extending previous UHF wireless propagation results*: to estimate the losses caused by the presence of haulage vehicles such as trains in coal mine tunnels; to estimate the propagation losses and wireless communication ranges expected along a longwall coal face tunnel; and to assess the applicability of previous analytical approximations to tunnels having reduced crossectional dimensions, such as those found in low coal and in the presence of haulage vehicles. The second area dealt with the development of a suitable propagation model to adequately explain the unexpected, highly favorable LF to MF band wireless radio wave propagation behavior experimentally observed in Consolidation Coal Co.'s Ireland mine. The third area dealt with the formulation of a model for evaluating the overall system transfer function and transmitter requirements for a hoist shaft LF communications system, taking into account the hoist rope/shaft transmission line characteristics, the cage and sheave wheel line terminations, the signal inductive couplers, and hoist shaft signal and noise data.

When establishing an underwater testing site for the energy measurements of the explosives, the dimensions of the measuring pool have to be measured to find out what is the maximum weight for the test charge. Secondly one has to decide the distance between the pressure gauge and the shooting point. Thirdly the pool has to be calibrated because of the reflections of the explosions by measuring the bubble periods of the calibration charges. The calibration shots can also be used to estimate the minimum weight of the explosive charge for the reliable energy measurements by calculating the shock, gas heave and total energy values and their standard deviations.

An analytical procedure is presented for evaluating the stresses in linings of bored tunnels caused by kinematic soil-lining interaction. Three cases of interaction as produced by the following conditions are treated: (1) relaxation of in situ soil stresses near a lining following its installation; (2) overburden pressure at the soil surface; and (3) free-field soil response resulting from an earthquake. Non-dimensional formulas and graphs resulting from parametric studies are presented for practical tunnel design applications. The procedure is applied separately to a steel lining and a concrete lining for a site located at the lower end of Market Street in San Francisco through which a BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit)tunnel passes.

At the 1990 Symposium of the Society of Explosives Engineering, D.T. Froedge, President of GeoSonics Inc., presented a paper entitled "Differential Topographic Vibration Isomapping", which detailed the capabilities of GeoSonics' new Iso-Seismic Service. In this paper Mr. Froedge described how one hundred or &ore free-standing miniature seismographs called Micro-Seis Units, randomly positioned around a blast, could accurately reveal the effects of sub-strata geology on surface ground vibrations. The paper went on to note the "regression analysis of scaled distance versus recorded particle velocity" as being an inadequate predictor of peak particle velocity. This is due to the fact that the calculated "regression analysis" formula for any site is predicted on the wars; case assumption because of a homogeneous and symmetrical sub-strata geology, a condition that rarely, if ever, exists.

In early 1993, the Piney River quarry owned and operated by the Blue Ridge Stone Corporation of W W? Boxley received a series of complaints from the owners of a 130 year-old historic farmhouse that had been converted into a bed and breakfast establishment. Since the distance from the quarry to the farmhouse was substantial, a unique method of seismic data acquisition was utilized to determine if perceived blast effects were caused by air blast or low amplitude, low frequency ground vibration.

This is the fourth annual tabulation that gives mineral royalty information. The table presents previous information plus about two dozen new entries. In addition to the royalty information, some entries show the cost of purchased reserves. Last year's tabulation appeared in two issues, to accommodate all of the information. This year the format has been changed slightly so the table can be printed in one issue. This year's table presents the commodities in the same sequence as last year. Sand and gravel information appears first, followed by: crushed stone for aggregate; other stone; industrial sand; other industrial minerals; energy minerals (coal, oil shale, uranium); and finally metals. As always, a caveat relates to factors that influence the reserve values. The data should serve only as a general reference. The table is not intended to present an absolute scale of reserve costs. Several factors influence the value of mineral commodities. These factors include: • location and transportation costs (especially significant for most industrial minerals); • market conditions for both the commodity and the company acquiring the right to mine it; • quality or grade of the deposit as it reflects the amount of processing and beneficiation necessary to produce the finished product; • and legislative restrictions and conditions for mining a given material at a given site. These and other factors will influence reserve costs of reserves. The table shows the range of royalties and the variations in the basis of computing the fees. In a few instances, it gives the cost of acquired reserves based on purchase price and quantitative estimates of the material in place. The table lists the commodity; the location (either by state, US geographic area, or Canadian province); the cost (R for royalty and P for purchased cost); and the year in which the lease or purchase agreement occurred. The last column offers either comments or gives a footnote number for more information. The cost column requires more explanation. A program was initiated tinder sponsorship of the U. S. Bureau of Mines to investigate pipeline behavior of raw and spent oil shale slurries. Slurries were recirculated in pipeline loops with 150-mm and 200-mm diameter horizontal test sections and a 150 -mm diameter vertical test section. Slurry concentrations from 10 to 60 weight percent were investigated. Critical and deposition velocities were observed. Head losses were measured at various velocities. Rheology measurements were made on representative homogeneous samples from the pipeline. From these data, pipeline energy requirements were predicted by computer and compared to pipeline data. Computer programs were also used to analyze pipeline data for two flow models: 1. Heterogeneous flow regime for coarse, settling slurries 2. Homogeneous flow regime for nonsettling suspensions The economics of slurry transport of raw and spent shale were examined. Cost estimates encompassed a range of pipe diameters to transport a wide range of throughputs of both raw and spent shale. Similar estimates were made for conveyor belt systems to provide a valid cost comparison. Economic comparisons are valid in a general sense, but a specific study must be made to determine the cost advantages of hydraulic transport for a given mine.

This report is intended as a reference for personnel interested in the computer anlaysis of coal-mine-electrical-power systems under either normal operating conditions or fault situations. The procedures developed for this purpose are described and implementation considerations are discussed with respect to the mine-power system. Considerations for choosing a solution technique and a number of examples are included. Procedures described include the Newton-Raphson iterative technique for the analysis of normal operation as well as a non-iterative Z-bus technique for analysis of unbalanced or balanced faults. During program development, strict attention has been given to the inclusion of core and/or time saving techniques such that these algorithms may be implemented on small as well as large computers. Program languages include FORTRAN IV for batch processing applications and APL or BASIC for interactive applications.

The 53 countries that constituted Africa in 1992 accounted for a significant portion of total world output of a number of mineral commodities. However, the continent's total output for a number of major mineral commodities declined relative to the volume produced during 1991. (See tables 1 and 2.) The most conspicuous declines in mineral production from 1991 to 1992 were for cobalt and copper (declines of 28.6 % and 23.4 %, respectively), which could be partially attributed to mining and metal processing difficulties caused by political and economic disruptions in Zaire and for uranium (12 % drop), for which much of the continental production decline was ascribed to Namibian cutbacks in response to lower world prices. The severe regional drought also adversely affected the mineral industry in a number of sub-Saharan nations.

A uniform hoisting-signal code for mines hoisting from more than one level, if adopted by all mining States, would be beneficial to employees and owners alike and should largely reduce the number of hoisting accidents. Misunderstood hoisting signals cause many shaft accidents involving injuries to men, damage to equipment, and loss of production from the resultant delay. Many of the metal-mining States have adopted codes for hoisting that are effective within the borders of that State but usually entirely different from the signal code, if any, in use in an adjoining State. For many years safety engineers have recognized this lack of uniformity as a distinct hazard, but a uniform code has never been adopted by the States or by the mining industry in those States that have not incorporated signal codes in their mining laws or mining regulations.

Since Reserve Mining Co. began commercial operations at Silver Bay, MN, some 25 years ago, major improvements in taconite processing technology have become available. In addition, significant new government standards have been imposed on industrial operations. By implementing a $370-million modernization program, Reserve was able to accomplish two major company objectives: the quality of concentrates produced from the Peter Mitchell mine has improved, and the operation meets both present and foreseeable environmental standards. Process modifications at Reserve were designed to: •Reduce the pellet silica content from 9% to 5%; •Increase the pellet iron content from 62.5% to 65.8%; •Implement a tailings disposal system utilizing "best available technology" water quality controls; and •Reduce air emissions by installing "best available technology" air emission controls. By adding dry cobbing, fine screening, and flotation to the concentrating process, pellet silica content has been reduced; the process reclaims and reuses all process waters; all tailings are stored in a zero discharge tailings basin; and all air emission standards are being met. Initial Beneficiation at Silver Bay Reserve's Peter Mitchell mine at Babbitt, MN, is on the eastern end of the Biwabik iron formation. The open-pit mine is approximately 16 km long, 0.8 km wide, and presently has a maximum depth of about 50 m. Principal constituents of the ore body are magnetite, quartz, and iron-magnesium silicates. The company's large commercial plant began operating at Silver Bay, 75 rail km from the mine, in 1955. Facilities have historically had the capacity to process 31.5 Mt/a of taconite, containing an average 24% magnetic iron, into 11 Mt/a of iron ore pellets. Reserve's initial beneficiation process-which existed up to early 1979-consisted of two crushing stages at the Babbitt mine site, two additional crushing and screening stages at Silver Bay, grinding in a conventional rod-ball¬regrind mill circuit, size classification with cyclones, and concentration with magnetic and hydraulic separators. Concentrate produced by that circuit assayed 65% iron and 8.5% silica, with a screen analysis of 94% -44 µm, and a surface area of 9300 cm2/cm3. Pellets produced from this concentrate assayed 62.5% iron and 9% silica (dry basis). Construction began in 1977 to modify Reserve's operation. Process modifications were designed from pilot scale operations that had been operated and researched by Reserve for more than 10 years. There were two design restraints imposed on the process: economic constraints that Reserve continue to use much of the existing processes and structures in the new operation; and a substantial number of government-imposed permit constraints. In effect, the tailings process was designed first and then a concentrating process was developed that would "fit" the tailings disposal system. Operation of the modified process began in June 1980. Crushing Remains Unchanged No changes in process flow were made at either the Babbitt mine and crushing plant or at the Silver Bay fine crusher. Gyratory crushers reduce run-of-mine taconite to -90 mm-diam at the mine. Taconite is then transported to Silver Bay by intra-plant railroad. There are 10 fine crushing lines. Each consists of a double deck screen, followed by a heavy duty short head crusher, a second double deck screen, and second short head crusher. All screen undersize material bypasses the crushing lines, resulting in an open circuit crushing process. Fine crusher product is approximately 98% - 20 mm, 80% -12 mm, and 50% -10 mm in diameter. Each fine crusher line processes about 400 t/h of crude taconite. Cobbing Provides Aggregate for Tailings Dams The first major process change was the addition of dry cobbing, a dry magnetic separation step between the fine crusher and concentrator. Dry cobbing serves two major purposes in the new process. Its principal function is to provide large volumes of dry coarse aggregate for use in construction of tailings dams. This process rejects about 20% of the fine crusher product as tailings with a size analysis of 98% -20 mm and 50% - 10 mm. These tailings are free draining and have high frictional shear strengths-two key requirements for dam building aggregates. Fine crusher product is conveyed to a new dry cobbing building. Here crushed ore is discharged into one of two 30-minute capacity surge bins. Crushed ore is withdrawn by 12 constant speed conveyor belts; each discharges 500 t of crushed taconite into a dry cobbing machine. Each machine consists of a 3-m-long riffle splitter and two vari-

With the end of the official apartheid legislation in the early 1990s, South Africa was heralded as a non-racial country. However, racial awareness has been reintroduced into the country with the Affirmative Action and Black Economic Empowerment legislation. Gender and racial transformation are the current order of the day. All organizations are required to reflect in their make-up the demographics of the population as soon as possible. Scorecard shave been drawn up to measure the rate of transformation for gender and race in organizations. The mining industry in South Africa has been in the forefront of this transformation legislation and scorecards. This paper seeks to show the effect of gender and racial transformation on mining engineering education and professionalism by analysing the changing demographics of graduating mining students at both the South African universities offering a degree in mining engineering, the professional registration of mining engineers with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), and the membership of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), the vocational institute for mining engineers. It also demonstrates the absurdity of gender and racial quotas based solely on the demographics of the current population of the country. This paper shows the degree to which mining engineering has transformed in both gender and race.

With stable building sites becoming scarce in the greater San Francisco Bay Area, the new Summit Senior Care Facility is being built into the side of an unstable hillside adjacent to the San Ramon Regional Medical Center in San Ramon, California. This hillside has had a long history of instability and the site of the new Senior Care Facility required excavation into both a historic old landslide and a more recent active landslide. After a thorough geotechnical study, it was concluded that the best way to build the new facility would be to construct a tied-back retaining wall in the area of the old landslide, since it extended off-site onto two adjacent properties, and remove the active landslide and replace it with compacted fill before cutting into its toe area with an additional tied-back retaining wall. The design was further complicated by the proximity of the site to several active faults. In the area of the old landslide, the combination of an ascending slope behind the wall, landslide forces and seismic forces resulted in total design pressures between 365 to 4,575 PSF for a wall with a maximum height of 30 feet. The wall for the old landslide was constructed by first drilling and placing steel soldier piles in concrete. The tip of the soldier piles extended a minimum of 12 feet below the landslide plane that was up to 36 feet below the bottom of the wall. Permanent double corrosion protected tiebacks were then installed through the soldier beams and anchored below the slide plane. A shotcrete facing was then installed on the face of the wall. BACKGROUND The site of the Summit Senior Care Facility is located on the southwest flank of Mount Diablo adjacent to San Ramon Valley which is characterized by gently rolling hills. The San Ramon Valley Regional Medical Center, which opened in 1990, is located to the north and an existing church is located to the southwest. There are also private residences located to the southeast. The site is shown in Figure 1. Numerous faults run close to the site, the most significant of which are the Calaveras and Pleasanton faults. The site has also had a long history of slope instability and has been the subject of numerous investigations. Studies conducted in 1979 and 1984 concluded that there was a landslide in the area and recommended that a buttress shear key be constructed between the subject site and the existing church for a sewer main as well as removal and replacement of the head area of the old landslide to stabilize the hospital site. While two previous geotechnical studies in 2008 and 2016 identified slope instability, they did not recognize the genesis and limits of the old landslide on the western portion of the site or the limits of the active landslide on the eastern portion of the site.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the performance characteristics of a 30-day around-the-clock gasification-pelletizing test conducted in October and November of 1980 with North Dakota Indianhead lignite. Gasification was conducted in a commercial-size, 6.5-it-diam, Single-stage, fixed-bed, atmospheric pressure producer with a rated capacity of about 30 million Btu/hr. Iron oxide pellets made from a commercial hematite concentrate were fired with the low-Btu gas in a 2.8-ft-diam by 35-ft-long pilot plant rotary kiln at a rate of 900 lb of pellets per hour. Gasifier operations at fuel feed rates up to 3 tons of lignite per hour and hematite pellet induration with raw 160-Btu/std ft3 lignite gas are described.
