Mine workers in heavy and dangerous work are under several physical risk factors, for example temperature, humidity, noise, vibration, lighting and air velocity. Thermal comfort includes parameters such as air temperature, air humidity, air flow rate, radiant heat, metabolic rate and garment insulation. In this study, thermal comfort conditions were evaluated using thermal comfort indices defined as predicted mean vote (PMV) and predicted percentage dissatisfied (PPD) which were determined by measurements taken from an underground coal mine for approximately 100 days. Although the metabolic rate (light work) was kept at 2 met, it was found that predicted mean vote ranged between − 2.58 and 1.68. The predicted percentage dissatisfied index was found to reach 95%. According to the results, it can be seen that thermal comfort may have negative effects on occupational health and safety. The change in thermal comfort index values in the Soma Underground Coal Mine was investigated in detail and the reasons for the changes were determined. Furthermore, determining the optimal working environment for the mine workers was also an aim of this study.

The Reserve Mining Co., in the processing of taconite iron ore quarried from the Peter Mitchell Pit, deposited the finely crushed waste rock into Lake Superior near Silver Bay Minnesota. In the early 1970s The U.S. Environmental Protection agency filed a lawsuit against Reserve Mining Co., asking the court to force the company to stop dumping into the lake. On April 20, 1974, after a lengthy court battle, the U.S. District Court concluded that the Reserve Mining discharge into Lake Superior violated federal and state pollution laws and thus ordered Reserve Mining Co., to halt the lake disposal of taconite tailings. At the time many feared that some of the mineral particles contained in the tailings (alleged to be asbestos or asbestos-like) would cause human health problems. This Conference was thus convened to readdress the problem of the mineral content of the Biwabik Iron Formation and to whether any minerals contained in the ore could cause human disease. The four papers given in this session address the nature of the mineral particles in the taconite rock, the definition of the term ??asbestos?? and the history of the legal controversy over the possible health effects of certain mineral particles contained in the Biwabik iron range ores. Morey The Biwabik Iron Formation was a principal source of ore for the American steel industry during the 20th Century. The unaltered iron deposits, called taconite, contain approximately 30% iron and 50% SiO2. About 75% of the iron in taconite resides in the mineral magnetite, the remainder is largely in iron carbonate and several iron-silicate minerals.

One way of cost reduction is attained when using materials with improved erosion ? corrosion resistance. For many years hard irons successfully answered the Mining Operation needs however application ranges were limited due to the low chemical resistance of such alloys. Corrosion resistance of any hard iron increases when microscopically homogenizing chromium and generating passivation conditions throughout and between all metallographic phases. Chromium distribution of the new material called Max10 was analyzed with EDS ? energy dispersive spectroscopy. At critical depleted chromium carbide ? matrix interfaces chromium increased to 31.72% which is well within passivation levels. Generally the corrosion resistance of high chromium hard irons provided by Metal Casting Industry is limited to 0.5% sulfuric acid and 28 PPM ionic chlorides. Such restrains increased when using Max10 to 2.0% sulfuric acid and 100 PPM ionic chlorides. Max10 contains 35% carbide volume fraction, has excellent corrosion resistance within pH = 1.15 ? 13.6 while fracture toughness under plain - strain conditions and Mode I opening is KIC = 20 KSI.(inch)1/2. Wear rate was calculated with the pin-on-disk apparatus using a diamond indenter per ASTM G99 recommendation. After years of research, experimentation and implementation the Max10 castings were service installed in slurry pumps and mixing equipment. In some applications the life time of slurry pumps manufactured in Max10 tripled versus previously used materials.

Introduction The Cannon mine at Wenatchee, WA has recently been brought into operation to recover gold from the sandstones of the Swauk formation. The mine is a joint venture between Asamera Minerals (US) Inc. and Breakwater Resources. A tailings impoundment was constructed to impound 2.7 to 3.6 Mt (3 to 4 million st) of tailings at 1.8 kt/a (2000 stpd) over about five years. This paper describes the design and construction of the impoundment. In particular, it describes the 100 m (300 ft) high earthfill embankment that is the main feature of the facility. Project environment The project is located on the outskirts of Wenatchee, a town of about 40,000 people. The town is situated on the flat alluvial terraces beside the Columbia River. The Cascade Mountains rise from the terraces in a series of ridges and valleys. The mine is at the foot of the Cascades. The tailings impoundment is in one of the steep valleys. The climate is mild and dry (Table 1). Site selection Twelve alternative sites within a 16-km (10-mile) radius of the mine were examined. Decision making theory was used to select the most suitable site. Advantages of the chosen site include its proximity to the mine and its low visibility from points of common public access. Also, the area was already heavily impacted by an existing silica quarry. The major disadvantage of the site is the need to pump tailings over a distance of 1.5 km (1 mile) and against a static head of 200 m (655 ft). Also, it is located in a gulch just upstream from the town of Wenatchee. Site geology The impoundment is generally underlain by interbedded sandstones and siltstones. The siltstones are often shattered. The sandstones are often friable. Both rock types are extensively jointed. Some isolated faulting of the sediments occurred before the area was covered with basalt flows. About 10,000 years ago, at the end of the ice age, the basalts were covered by 3 to 10 m (10 to 33 ft) of wind blown loess - a fine sandy clay and silt. River deposits filled the base of the valley to depths between 5 and 25 m (16 and 82 ft). Under the main part of the embankment, these materials were removed to expose bedrock. Ground water flow is generally through the more permeable layers. The permanent water table is about 5 m (16 ft) beneath the ground surface. In longwall mining, premining prediction of methane emission rate depends on a number of geological factors, geographical factors, and operational factors. These same factors also can impact the selection of a specific degasification system. This study proposes a principle component analysis (PCA) and artificial neural network (ANN) approach to predict the ventilation methane emission rates of U.S. longwall mines and the optimum combination of degasification boreholes based on the given characteristics of the mine. Artificial neural networks, more than conventional computer models, are adaptable systems that can solve problems such as non-polynomial or very complex relationships that are difficult to describe mathematically. Data on ventilation emissions and degasification system design were obtained from 63 longwall mines in 10 states and were combined with corresponding geological, geographical, and operational parameters for the period 1985-2005. PCA was used to determine the variables that most influence ventilation emissions and degasification system design. Different combinations of variables in the data set and network structures were used for network training, cross-validation, and testing. The resultant ANN models predicted ventilation methane emissions with a 90-95% accuracy and were superior to multi-linear and second order non-linear models. The ANN-based expert classification system was able to classify the design of the degasification system (no degasification, gob vent borehole, horizontal and gob vent borehole, and horizontal, vertical and gob vent borehole) with more than 80% accuracy. The models can be used as prediction and decision tools for the ventilation emissions and degasification system selection for specific site and mine-design conditions.

The mining industry in Colorado faces the same problems the industry faces throughout the United States and the world — record low commodity prices and increasing regulatory and environmental restrictions that seemed designed to curtail mining activities. Despite those obstacles, the mining industry in Colorado still contributes about $8 billion annually to the state’s economy in the form of base and precious metals, industrial minerals, coal and associated service businesses and jobs. So the 300 attendees at the102nd National Western Mining Conference felt reason-ably positive about the industry in their state. The meeting is the Colorado Mining Association’s annual conference and was held at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs in November. The theme was “Mining in the New Millennium — Achievement + Innovation = Survival.” Experts from Colorado’s mining industry and abroad discussed the challenges faced by the mining industry as it enters the new millennium. They offered insights into how the industry will operate during the early years of the 21st century and how it will survive low prices and increased regulatory restrictions.

The Coronado Traffic Tunnel is a proposed two-lane, reversible, road tunnel, which will relieve severe peak hour congestion problems on surface streets. The tunnel will take traffic from the Coronado Bay Bridge to Naval Air Station North Island. The project will include 12.5 m (41 ft) inside diameter by 1,112 m (3,650 ft) of tunnel, 552 m(1,815 ft) of cut and cover box structure, and 400 m (1,315 ft) of open cut structure. The geology consists of predominately clean and silty sand, saturated sand, with some clay layers, requiring Earth Pressure Balance or Slurry Shield tunneling technology.

The current state of knowledge concerning mesothelioma risk estimates is reviewed. Estimates of the risk of mesothelioma exist for the commercial asbestos fiber types chrysotile, amosite and crocidolite. Data also exist on which to assess risks for winchite (sodic tremolite) and anthophyllite asbestos. Uncertainty in estimates is primarily related to limitations in measurements of exposure. Differences in the dimensions of the various fiber types and of the same fiber types at different stages of processing add a further complication. Nevertheless, in practical terms, crocidolite presents the highest asbestos related mesothelioma risk. The risk associated with sodic tremolite (winchite) appears to be similar. In chrysotile miners and millers, the mesothelioma risk has been linked with exposure to asbestiform tremolite. Exposure to chrysotile in a pure form seems likely to present a very low if any risk of mesothelioma. While the majority of mesothelial tumors result from exposure to the asbestos minerals, there are other well established and suspected etiological agents. While a practical threshold seems to exist for exposure to chrysotile, it is unlikely to exist for the amphibole asbestos minerals, especially for crocidolite. To date there is no indication of an increased risk of mesothelioma resulting from non-commercial fiber exposure in the taconite industry. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Issues between resource utilization and resource preservation often develop in connection with coal mining. One such conflict exists in eastern Utah where PacifiCorp and Energy West Mining Company are working with State and Federal agencies to address the resource recovery/resource preservation dispute. The effects of underground longwall coal mining on golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) cliff nesting sites have been studied at the Cottonwood Mine since 1986. Subsidence, escarpment spalling, and the nesting activities of the local eagle population were monitored.

Large amounts of limestone fines co-produced during the processing of crushed lime-stone may be useful in the sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2). Accelerated weathering of limestone (AWL) is proposed as a low-tech method to capture and sequester CO2 from fossil fuel-fired power plants and other point sources such as cement manufacturing. AWL reactants are readily available, inexpensive and environmentally benign. Waste CO2 is hydrated with water to produce carbonic acid. This reacts with and is neutralized by limestone fines, thus converting CO2 gas to dissolved calcium bicarbonate. AWL waste products can be disposed of in the ocean. Feasibility requires access to an inexpensive source of limestone and to seawater, thus limiting AWL facilities to within about 10 km (6 miles) of the coastline. The majority of U.S. coastal power-generating facilities are within economical transport distance of limestone resources. AWL presents opportunities for collaborative efforts among the crushed stone industry, electrical utilities, cement manufacturers and research scientists. There is a concern that CO2 generated from human activities is contributing to climatic and environmental changes. Approximately one-third of anthropogenic CO2 emissions come from burning fossil fuels to generate electricity. Each power plant is capable of emitting several million tons of CO2 annually. A variety of other industrial processes, such as cement manufacture, oil refining, and iron and steel production, also emit large amounts of CO2. The level of atmospheric CO2 can be reduced by capturing CO2 from point-source emissions and storing or sequestering it in isolation from the atmosphere (U.S. Department of Energy, 2003). In 1999, G.H. Rau and K. Caldeira proposed a geochemistry-based method that is referred to as accelerated weathering of limestone (AWL) in a paper titled ?Accelerating carbonate dissolution to sequester carbon dioxide in the ocean ? geochemical implications.?

Vertical circular shafts have been proposed for multiple access to high level nuclear waste deep geologic repositories. Shaft construction is a critical path item in the commissioning of a repository. Other constraints on the shaft design and construction criteria include the lack of design precedence for long term performance and the importance of minimizing rock and groundwater disturbance. A comparative evaluation of conventional and mechanized shaft sinking techniques is presented in the context of the particular geologic and design constraints. Technical and non-technical factors for blind drilling, blind boring, raise-reaming, drill-and-blast and ream-and slash methods are reviewed for typically "hard rock" and "salt" type repository sites. Appropriate shaft designs are developed, the suitability of each method to the particular requirements evaluated and construction costs and schedules determined. The explicit appraisal of the significant design factors for each method serves as a rational basis for the preliminary selection of the most suitable sinking technique for a particular set of site/design conditions.

The theme of the 2012 North American Tunneling conference (NAT) was ?Tunneling: Driving Value.? This theme best reflects where the tunneling and underground construction industry is to-day. Major advances that have been made in technologies have provided tremendous improvements in productivity, which, in turn, have allowed the industry to deliver more cost-effective and less disruptive solutions to the nation?s infrastructure needs. Despite a weak economy, domestically and globally, cities and states continue to spend billions on infrastructure improvements. For the underground construction industry, that means more transportation and water, wastewater, storm water projects and other underground structures. And, for each project completed, underground construction and tunneling technology grows. The NAT conference, put on by the Underground Construction Association (UCA) of SME, provides an outlet for technology transfers among professionals. This year?s conference, held in Indianapolis, IN June 24-27, attracted 918 attendees, up from 803 at the last NAT in 2010. The accompanying exhibit also featured 116 exhibitors occupying 140 booths. That was up from 108 booths in 2010. So, the meeting continues to grow as underground construction professionals throughout the world seek to learn from their peers.

“America’s mining industry brings good jobs to communities across America and provides the energy, minerals and equipment that are vital to our economic security and our way of life.” That was the surprise videotaped greeting from President George Bush at the official opening ceremony of MINExpo 2004in the Las Vegas, NV Convention Center. Jack Gerard reinforced the upbeat mood at MIN-Expo. He praised Nevada Gov. Kenny Guinn for his support of the mining industry, the state’s largest manufacturing sector. Gerard is the president and chief executive officer of the National Mining Association, the sponsor of MINExpo 2004.

The present work explores the reutilization of red mud, an industrial waste arising from the production of alumina, as a component of isolation technologies for hazardous substances. The work involved the study and optimisation of the geotechnical properties of red mud in conjunction with adsorption experiments of As(V) and Hg(II). The results from both types of experiments were integrated in a dispersion-diffusion model to calculate migration curves and minimum thickness of the red mud compacted layer. The geotechnical studies showed that compaction increased the stability and decreased the hydraulic conductivity of red mud barrier. Red mud sorbed high amounts of As (up to 44 mmmol kg-1) and Hg (up to 9.2 mmmol kg-1). The calculated minimum thickness of the red mud barrier was 1-10 cm for As and 2-19 cm for Hg, for an operation period of 35 years. The results obtained let to conclude that the reuse of red mud as a component of isolation systems of hazardous substances represents a viable alternative use of this residue.

Ventilation network modeling in mine planning dates back at least three decades, but it is not widely accepted and/or practiced until the last decade, thanks to the advent of modern computers with their increase d speed and storage space. There are at least half a dozen such modeling software packages available on the market each with different features and acceptance. This paper compares five popular software packages,?? VnetPC Pro, MineVent, VentSIM Visual, VentGraph and MFIRE 3.0. A case study using Missouri S&T?s Experimental Mine is conducted to compare the five software packages in features, interface, output display and user-friendliness.

Controlling dust generation and keeping it below permissible limits to meet federal dust standards at the working face of a roomand-pillar coal mine is a challenge for a mine operator. With the recent changes in federal dust regulations requiring lower worker exposure, maintaining compliance has become increasingly difficult. The current most effective practice of dust control at a continuous miner face in an underground mine is the use of a flooded-bed scrubber. A study carried out by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) indicated that a flooded-bed scrubber could achieve cleaning efficiencies between 58 and 90%. But, the operation of such a system is maintenance intensive. The flooded-bed scrubber screen becomes clogged with dust particles and requires frequent cleaning to maintain performance. However, the dust control issue is not solely a mining industry problem. Other industries face similar issues. The University of Kentucky collaborated with Toyota Motor Manufacturing on the development of a novel wet scrubber, called the vortecone scrubber, for capturing oversprayed paint particles in automotive paint booths. The vortecone scrubber achieved a cleaning efficiency of 99% and required minimal maintenance. This study aims to assess the ability of this vortecone scrubber to capture respirable dust in an underground coal mine. The paper presents the results of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of this vortecone scrubber. It discusses the effects of air quantity and dust particle size on the performance of the scrubber.

Longwall management, regular shield maintenance, and evaluation of ground control problems can be performed using real-time shield monitoring program. Based on real-time shield pressure data, evaluation of intensity and interval of periodic weighting, estimation of time-dependent pressure increase and the effects of geologic anomalies can be obtained. In this study, full-face shield pressure data of over 457 m (1,500 feet) of face advancement is analyzed to evaluate shield response in the presence of surface lineaments, floor undulations, and multiple main roofs. Shield pressure increase due to web cutting is also correlated with setting pressure during periodic weighting and normal time. In addition, time-dependent pressure increase rate on Sundays and holidays is also correlated with time average pressure and the location of previous periodic weighting.

Exposure?response relationships between the relative risk of lung cancer and quantitative measures of exposure to asbestos are available from a number of epidemiological studies. Meta-analyses of these relationships have been published by Lash et al. (1997) [Lash, T.L., Crouch, E.A.C., Green, L.C., 1997. A meta-analysis of the relation between cumulative exposure to asbestos and relative risk of lung cancer. Occup. Environ. Med. 54, 254?263] and Hodgson and Darnton (2000) [Hodgson, J.T., Darnton, A., 2000. The quantitative risks of mesothelioma and lung cancer in relation to asbestos exposure. Ann. Occup. Hyg. 44, 565?601]. In this paper, the risks derived in these meta-analyses have been compared. Lash et al., concentrated on process and found that the risk of lung cancer increased as the asbestos is refined by processing. Hodgson and Darnton concentrated on fibre type and found that the risk was highest for exposure to amphibole asbestos (crocidolite and amosite), lowest for chrysotile and intermediate for mixed exposure. Some of the differences between the conclusions from the two meta-analyses are a consequence of the choice of studies included. The range of asbestos types included in the studies in the analysis of Hodgson and Darnton was wider than that in Lash et al., enabling differences between fibre types to be analyzed more readily. There are situations where occupational exposure to chrysotile asbestos has shown no detectable increase in risk of lung cancer. 1. Paper1?Identification and enumeration of asbestos fibers in the mining environment: mission and modification to the federal asbestos standard Arthur M. Langer Asbestos-related disease is increased with cumulative exposure (the concentration of asbestos in the air and duration of exposure). The maximum duration is assumed to be a working lifetime so federal agencies control cumulative exposure by limiting the airborne concentration of asbestos fibers equal to or greater than 5 lm in length. Air samples are collected in the environment of interest by entraining the airborne particulates including fibers on membrane filters and then counting the number of fibers using phase-contrast light microscopy. In addition to length, the fibers must have a length to width ratio of at least 3 to 1. This ratio is also referred to as the aspect ratio. Some counting strategies placed an upper limit on the fiber width restricting the counting to respirable fibers. Airborne asbestos is controlled by monitoring a sub-population of the airborne asbestos. No asbestos fibers shorter than 5 lm or fibers of any length having widths less than the resolution of the light optical method are counted. In the non-occupational environment, the Environmental Protection Agency requires the use of analytical transmission electron microscopy and fibers and counting fibers with lengths of 0.5 lm or greater and aspect ratios of 5 to 1 or greater are counted. The permissible exposure limit for asbestos has been reduced by more than 120-fold since 1969, when the standard was 12 fiber/ml and the current monitoring methodology was developed. The manufacturing and mining worksites are regulated by two different federal agencies and the asbestos exposure limit was higher in the mining environment until recently (Mine Safety and Health Administration 30 CFR Part 56, 57, and 7, Federal Registry, February 29, 2008). Currently the permissible exposure limit (PEL) is the same in both types of workplace and it is 0.1 fibers per milliliter (fiber/ml) over an 8-h shift as a time-weighted average (TWA). A milliliter (ml) is equivalent to a cubic centimeter (cc) and sometimes this standard is reported as 0.1 f/cc. As the phase-contrast methodology was used to monitor lower exposures and environments, other fibrous mineral particulates were incorrectly characterized as asbestos. These occurred in talc deposits and taconite ores from the Eastern Mesabi Range.

Tellurium (Te) is one of the least abundant elements in the crust and tends to form minerals associated with copper, lead, zinc and iron sulfide deposits. Today, most tellurium production comes from the anode slimes and other wastes generated in metal refining. Most of the current tellurium produced in the world is used as an alloying agent in iron and steel, as catalysts, and in the chemical industry. However, future demand and production could increase because tellurium is increasingly used in solar panels and some electronic devices. Tellurium minerals are found in Au-Ag districts in New Mexico, but were not considered important exploration targets in the past. In New Mexico, tellurium is found associated with porphyry copper deposits in southwestern New Mexico and with Au-Ag veins in the Eureka, Sylvanite, Organ, Lordsburg, Steeple Rock, Wilcox, Mogollon, Chloride, Cuchillo, Hillsboro, Zuni Mountains, White Oaks, and Nogal-Bonito districts. The only tellurium production from New Mexico has been from the Lone Pine deposit (Wilcox district), where approximately 5 tons of tellurium ore was produced. Gold-tellurides are found with gold, silver, pyrite, and fluorite in fracture-filling veins in rhyolite at Lone Pine, with reported assays as much as 5,000 ppm Te. Other districts in New Mexico have potential for tellurium, but require field evaluation.
