"Sampling error and bias, especially the Increment Preparation Error (IPE), are introduced when the tool allocated to do the job fails to extract a representative sample. This is the case with chip sampling; the tool can only extract haphazard shapes of loose or fractured material and not always from within the demarcated sample area. Increment Extraction Error (IEE) and Increment Delimitation Error (IDE) could be severe, but are found to be relatively unbiased. The uncontrolled action of the sampler in discarding excess sample material after sample collection has a significant impact on the error and bias introduced with each and every extraction. A new type of bias, referred to as the ‘waste discard bias’, arises when samplers select what portion of the excess sample material to discard at the sample site. Material visually identified as waste is discarded in preference to mineralized broken ore if there is an excess of sample material. This results in a considerable error in the analytical results. The bias is proportional to the reef-waste ratio in the demarcated sample. IntroductionTwo types of ‘sampling’ are distinguished, namely sampling of particulate materials (broken ores) and sampling of solid, unbroken in situ mineralized reef. This study considers only chip- or face-sampling of in situ, goldbearing, carbon-rich conglomerates typical of the Upper Witwatersrand Supergroup and examines where components of sampling error and bias, clearly specified in the Theory of Sampling, may arise during the practice of ‘face sampling’. Many millions of face samples have been extracted from Witwatersrand-type mines using a hammer and chisel, and detailed descriptions (standard operating procedures) of how the samples should be taken have been developed by many mining companies. There is, however, no taxonomy or nomenclature for managing or reporting the different types of errors associated with chip sampling. The Theory of Sampling compiled by Pierre Gy in the early 1950s provides, comprehensive nomenclature of sampling errors that is applied to particulate sampling of ore in a lot, a stockpile, or a moving stream on a conveyor belt. The taxonomy and characteristics of sampling errors, grouped according to the sources from which they arise, and identified by Gy (1973, 1979, 1982, 1992, 1995, and 1998) are shown in Figure 1. This classification of errors is used extensively in regard to the sampling of particulate materials in the mining and minerals industry, but not in regard to chip sampling. A relatively small mass (hundreds of grams) of representative particulate material for estimating the average grade of a much larger mass (thousands of tons – the ‘lot’ in the Theory of Sampling) is extracted by the chipping or cutting of a representative rock ‘sample’ from the stope face."

A project was funded by the Australian coal industry to investigate the mechanisms that might lead to sample bias when using cross-belt cutters, in order to help coal industry personnel to make better decisions about the purchase, maintenance and operation. It concentrated on DEM modelling of skew cutters. These are set at an angle to the belt with the intention of minimizing disturbance to the non-sampled material. Two bias mechanisms are likely to cause bias for cross-belt cutters. Waves of material are bulldozed off the belt by the upstream side of the body of square cutters and material is thrown by the leading edges of cutter blades for all types of cross-belt cutters. These mechanisms cause some parts of the load of material on a belt to be over-represented. The effects of these mechanisms cannot be made to be negligible, so cross-belt samplers cannot be trusted to produce unbiased samples, especially for segregated streams of material. However, it is possible to give a bound on the maximum likely bias. The grades of two portions of the stream can be estimated by stopping the belt and shovelling off 1/3 of the cross-section of the load on the belt into a container, concentrating on the final side of the belt and the top of the load. The remaining material should be put into another container and the difference in grade determined. The maximum likely bias is typically about 10% of this difference. For a cross-belt cutter, having an extraction ratio near to 100% is not a reliable indication that the cutter has little or no bias. Some bias mechanisms affecting cross-belt sample cutters make sample mass too high and some make it too low, so an extraction ratio near 100% can occur if two bias mechanisms are both active. Modern industrial processes undergo frequent process state shifts due to changes in demand, feedstock or maintenance operations. Multimodal continuous process monitoring is therefore required for effective plant operation. Steady state analysis is a key component in effective multimodal monitoring. Various issues still remain in determining the starting and ending times of transition states. High dimensionality of process data is a characteristic that makes it difficult to select variables to consider when conducting steady state analysis. In order to address these problems, steady state detection on the principal component space is proposed. First, data undergoes principle component analysis to reduce dimensionality, then existing multivariate steady state detection algorithms are applied on the principle component scores. A novel algorithm, threshold PCA-SSD, is proposed and compared to an existing technique for steady state detection. Iron, in the form of steel and stainless steel, is the most commonly used metal in the world. Plain steels corrode and oxidize easily, while stainless steels exhibit improved corrosion and oxidation resistance. It has been found that rare earth metal (REM) additions, such as cerium and erbium, result in the improvement of the abovementioned properties in iron-containing compounds. Gadolinium is a REM, however, there is very little information available on the influence of gadolinium on the microstructure and mechanical properties of iron-containing compounds. Thus, the purpose of this research project was to determine the influence of gadolinium additions on the microstructure and mechanical properties of mild steel and 316 stainless steel. Ten alloys were produced for the purposes of this research. Five of the alloys had a base composition of mild steel while the remaining five had base composition of 316 stainless steel. The alloys for each of the base composition contained gadolinium additions of 0.1, 0.5, 1.2, and 5 weight per cent. The as-cast and the cold-rolled alloys were analysed. The alloys responded well to the cold-rolling with the exception of the 5 weight per cent gadolinium mild steel and stainless steel alloys. These alloys were extremely brittle and underwent a significant amount of cracking during the cold rolling process. A microstructural analysis of the alloys was conducted using a light optical microscope, while the chemical analysis of the alloys was conducted using energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The resulting microstructures and EDS analyses revealed that the gadolinium displayed minimal solubility in the ferrite matrix of the mild steel alloys and minimal solubility in the austenite matrix of the stainless steel alloys. Instead the gadolinium formed as an interdendritic secondary phase in both alloys. EDS analysis revealed that the secondary phase in both alloys was gadolinium-rich. Vickers microhardness tests conducted on both alloys revealed that the alloys were composite-like, with a hard, brittle gadolinium-containing compound dispersed throughout a softer, more ductile matrix. The corrosion resistance of the alloys was determined through potentiodynamic anodic polarization tests. Two solutions were used for the corrosion rate tests: a 0.5 weight per cent NaC1 solution and a 0.5 M H2SO4 solution. The results from the mild steel alloys revealed that in both the solutions, the corrosion potentials and the corrosion resistance of the alloys increased with increasing gadolinium concentration up to 1 weight per cent. The corrosion rate test results from the stainless steel alloys revealed that the passivation current density and corrosion resistance of the alloys increased with increasing gadolinium concentration in both solutions. The oxidation resistances of the mild steel and stainless steel alloys were determined through the use of a Netzstch Simultaneous Thermal Analyser. For both the mild steel and the stainless steel alloys, it was found that the oxidation resistance of the alloys increased as the concentration of gadolinium increased when compared to the as-received mild steel and stainless steel samples. This could be due to a strongly adhering gadolinium oxide scale that formed on the surface of the alloys and resulted in the protection of the mild steel and the stainless steel.

Impact crushers are common machines in comminution plants. Their high size-reduction ratio and relatively simple design, make them a preferred tool even when subjected to harsh wear, and producing a large quantity of fines in some applications. Until now the alignment of the operational parameters was an operator’s responsibility. Due to the random process characteristic this is mostly done based on empirical values and sensor data, such as power consumption. This paper describes a new approach for online process monitoring of the horizontal-shaft-impact crusher. The application of robust, low-cost acceleration sensors enables the permanent observation of the process characteristics. The operational and evaluation methods are determined on the basis of experiments. Subsequently the recorded measurements are analysed in regards of throughput, rotational speed and product particle size distribution. Occurring signal characteristics are described based on physical and technical principles. The measured data of the acceleration sensors at varying operation conditions provide insight in the course of process. The accurate utilisation yields the determination of the preferential process conditions providing the best balance between the pros and cons of an impact crusher. Both the experimental method and the data processing is discussed from a scientific perspective, displaying a completely new approach for the operation of impact crushers. Understanding the contribution of geophysical variables is vital for identifying ore indicator regions. Both magnetometry and gamma-rays are used to identify the geophysical signatures of the rocks. Density is another key variable for tonnage estimation in mining, and needs to be re-estimated in areas of change when a boundary update has been conducted. Modelling these geophysical variables in 3D will enable investigation of the properties of the rocks and improve our understanding of the ore. The Gaussian Process (GP) was previously used to generate 3D spatial models for grade estimation using geochemical assays. This study investigates the influence of the following two factors on the GP-based autonomously generated 3D geophysical models: the resolution of the input data, and the number of nearest samples used in the training process. A case study conducted on a typical Hammersley Ranges iron ore deposit using geophysical logs, including density, collected from the exploration holes, is examined in this paper.

International Solvent Extraction Conference 1971 ISEC '71, which will be held in The Hague, The Netherlands, from 18th to 23rd April, 1971, is being sponsored by the Society of Chemical Industry in association with the Koninklijk Instituut van Ingenieurs, the Institution of Chemical Engineers and the Koninklijke Nederlandse Chemische Vereniging. The Working Party on Distillation, Absorption and Extraction of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering is participating in the Conference, which is the 101st event of the Federation. The scope of the Conference covers the entire science and technology of liquid-liquid extraction as applied in all branches of industry. Thus sessions will cover both chemical and chemical engineering aspects of the subject as applied to both inorganic and organic solutes. The conference aims to bring together academic and industrial workers in the field from all parts of the world. The programme includes over 100 papers by authors in 26 countries. In order to meet this need, this Department has for some years run one year M.Sc. courses. Engineers, often sponsored by their employers, have a choice of three courses which are respectively devoted to mining, applied rock mechanics or mineral process design. The course in Mining is divided into five subjects, which are treated from the business management point of view. It is intended to provide middle management with a knowledge of those techniques that are required by the mining engineering function in the preparation of modern projects. The course in Mineral Process Design provides a systematic use of mineral sciences, engineering and economics for ore testing and process design, so as best to balance the technical and financial requirements for specific mineral resources. The course in Engineering Rock Mechanics is designed to provide a specialized training in the engineering applications of rock mechanics for engineers and geologists, so that they are equipped to treat a wide variety of problems in mining and civil engineering. Prerequisite qualifications are a good first degree in a related subject, plus industrial experience: The rewards include an M.Sc. of the University of London and the Diploma of the Imperial College (DIC). South Africa depends to a considerable measure on the exploitation of mineral reserves and the processing of these minerals. One of the prime requirements for the mining and metallurgical industry to continue in this vital role is access to sufficient energy in a suitable form. Hence, four important questions are discussed: Does South Africa have sufficient energy for the processing of its minerals and metals! Will the cost of energy allow South Africa's minerals and metals to compete on world markets? Can mining and metallurgical processes become more energy-efficiency Can mining and metallurgical processes be adapted to the various forms of energy that may have to be utilized in the future? It is concluded that about 26 per cent of the extractable reserves of coal would be required in the mining and processing of 50 per cent of South Africa's reserves of gold, platinum-group metals, copper, iron, ferrochromium, and ferromanganese. However, the reducing agents required exceed the extractable reserves but not the total estimates of mineable in situ resources of metallurgical coal and anthracitic coal. Even under the severe constraint that coal could become virtually the sole source of energy, only about three-quarters of the extractable reserves of coal would have been consumed by the year 2025. The reasonably assured resources of uranium metal that can be recovered at less than $80 per kilogram are considerable and, at current conversion efficiencies to electricity, are equivalent to one-fifth of the extractable reserves of coal. The rate of exportation of energy in the form of U30. was about five times that of coal in 1978. It is pointed out that the price of energy has a direct effect on the competitiveness of metals, and, although constituting only a small proportion of the selling price of precious metals, it represents a significant proportion of the selling price of copper and metals recovered from oxide ores. The scope for the conservation of energy appears to be greater in the extraction and conversion of primary energy-carriers to electrical energy than in other mining or metallurgical fields. Provided that alternative sources of energy can be converted to electrical energy, they can be applied to the mining and metallurgical industries. The decision as to which type of energy should be used in specific mining and metallurgical situations is complicated, and is likely to be subjected to closer scrutiny than in the past. The hope is expressed that the tentative conclusions reached will give rise to more-quantitative analyses from those qualified to undertake such an exercise. Inevitably, the questions asked at the outset give rise to more questions, and the more interesting ones are posed in the context of each conclusion.

Mining and plant disciplines can benefit from pre-concentration of UG2 platinum ores in a dense medium separation (DMS) plant. The main benefit of DMS is the selective discard of waste from the feed stream, thus improving project economics while reducing the power and water requirements for processing. On the mining side, with the correct combination of variables, implementing DMS as a pre-concentration step can reduce cut-off grades and, as a result, increase ore reserves. In addition, the use of DMS technology gives the mine team the opportunity to consider alternative mining methods for an operation. The challenges of balancing the mining tonnage, methods, and resulting grades with the process plant size, recoveries, and DMS discard volumes have resulted in the development of a model to optimize value on new projects or existing operations. This paper will focus on these benefits from a mining and plant perspective, quantifying the water and power savings, and look at the economic benefits of pre-concentration and the effect of metal prices, plant feed grade, and DMS efficiency in different mining environments.

In the present study, an innovative comminution technology of high-voltage pulse discharge was proposed for galena to weaken the mechanical property. The results of pre-treatment experiments indicated that the optimal operating conditions of spherical gap spacing 25 mm, pulse numbers 120, and loading voltage 25 kV were obtained, where the relative grindability of pretreated products was improved significantly, although with the prolonging of grinding time, the superiority of high-voltage electric pulses was gradually weakened. The galena ores were subjected to a high-voltage pulse discharge, and then the crack generating along the boundary between galena and gangue was observed under an optical microscope, and the surface burning which appeared in the ores. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) results indicated that the pretreated products were in a state of melting and then condensation, accompanied by some pore formation. Pulsed discharge pre-treatment not only produced more micro-cracks and cracks in the sample but also extended the original crack. Uniaxial tests performed on core from instrumented sites at Amandelbult 1 shaft, Impala 10 shaft and Union Section Spud shaft showed a nonlinear elastic relationship between applied load and induced deformation. This nonlinear behaviour does not appear to be dependent on borehole orientation but in the case of the Amandelbult and Union sites appears to have been influenced by the stress condition of the rock mass at the time of drilling. Cores drilled at these two sites under destressed conditions, such as over a stope, showed a linear elastic response to the applied load whereas most of the cores drilled under relatively high radial stresses were nonlinear. The Impala 10 shaft tests, however, all showed strong nonlinear behaviour irrespective of the stress condition of the rock mass at the time of drilling, although high stress conditions may have influenced the severity of the nonlinearity. A comparison between underground stress change measurements and an elastic model indicated that the rock mass became nonlinear when the virgin stress condition was relaxed to about 10 MPa. The cores for laboratory testing were retrieved from vertical boreholes drilled up from the centre of a stope and from horizontal boreholes drilled over pillars and stopes at about 600 m, 1 100 m and 1 400 m below surface for the three sites respectively. The k-ratios under virgin conditions were estimated from sockets, modelling and stress measurements to be 1.0, 1.3, and 0.5 for the Amandelbult, Impala and Union sites respectively. Of the three sites, therefore, Impala 10 shaft appears to have had the highest virgin stress state. Tests performed on similar rocks from shallower depths at Impala Platinum essentially showed a linear relationship between stress and strain. From the small Impala Platinum rock test database available to the project, it appears that the nonlinear elastic behaviour initiates at this mine from about 1 000 m below surface and seems to become progressively more nonlinear below this depth. In addition, the nonlinear elastic rocks are weaker, have a lower Young?s modulus and a higher Poisson?s ratio than their linear elastic equivalents. Interestingly the tangential Poisson?s ratios of the nonlinear elastic materials are often greater than 0.5 at 50% of the failure stress, suggesting an early failure initiation. The paper describes the microscope and modelling work done to determine the causes of the nonlinear behaviour and discusses some implications of the behaviour for deep-level mining.

"Plasma-assisted spheroidisation of metal powders offers several technical advantages with respect to both the ease of materials handling and powder-metallurgical item manufacturing. Advantages include improved flowability, increased powder packing density, elimination of internal component cavities and fractures, changes in morphology resulting in decreased friction between particles and contamination during pneumatic transport and enhanced particle purity. In this empirical study, spherical iron particles were produced using a microwave plasma operating at atmospheric pressure and characterized using optical microscopy and SEM techniques. Iron powders were fed into the system at fixed operating conditions, resulting in particles with spherical structures. The theoretical estimate of the time required for melting to occur is 1.6 ms, an order of magnitude smaller than the actual residence time. IntroductionParticle design and functionalization has become an increasingly popular aspect of materials synthesis and powder-metallurgical item manufacturing. One such technique involves the spheroidisation and densification of feed materials, typically in the form of chemical powders with wide particle size distributions. The major benefits of powder spheroidisation include improved powder flowability, increased powder packing density and powder purity, reductions in internal voids and defects, as well as the ability to manipulate the particles surface morphologies (Boulos, 2004). Thermal plasma processing has the potential for scale-up and for producing industrial quantities of spheroidised powder.Thermal plasma technologies offer a wide spectrum of material synthesis and treatment options, amongst others the synthesis and spheroidisation of nano-sized ceramic and metal particles (Kumar and Selvarajan, 2006). The spheroidisation process occurs within the plasma discharge via in-flight heating and melting of the powder feed material, given high enough plasma temperatures (Fridman, 2008, p. 495). Surface tension in the molten droplets results in spherical, or nearly, spherical, powder particles being formed upon exiting the plasma discharge where the droplet undergoes rapid cooling and freezes. Quite often, the bulk density of these spherical particles is higher than that of the starting material (Boulos, Fauchais and Pfender, 2013, p. 42). The different plasma spheroidisation techniques reported include radio frequency (RF) induction thermal plasmas (Jiang and Boulos, 2006; Karoly and Szepvolgyi, 2005; Yuming, Junjie and Yanwei, 2013), nontransferred direct current (DC) thermal plasmas (Chaturvedi et al., 2014; Kumar and Selvarajan, 2008; Suresh, Selvarajan and Vijay., 2008) and microwave-assisted plasma processing methods (Chen, Gleiman and Phillips, 2001; Vanamu et al., 2004; Weigle et al., 2004)"

"Ferrochrome (FeCr) is vital for the production of stainless and high-alloy ferritic steels, since it is the only source of new Cr units. FeCr production is an energy-intensive process. The pelletized chromite prereduction process is most likely the FeCr production process with the lowest specific electricity consumption (SEC), i.e. MWh/t, currently in operation. However, due to increases in costs, efficiency, and environmental pressures, FeCr producers are attempting to lower their overall energy consumption even further. Recently, it was proven that pre-oxidation of chromite ore prior to pelletization and prereduction significantly decreases both the SEC and lumpy carbonaceous reductants required for smelting. This paper presents the first attempt at conceptualizing the technoeconomic feasibility of integrating chromite pre-oxidation into the prereduction process. Financial modelling yielded a net present value (NPV) at a 10% discount rate of approximately R900 million and an internal rate of return (IRR) of approximatelyy 30.5% after tax, suggesting that the implementation of pre-oxidation prior to pellet prereduction may be financially viable. Sensitivity analysis indicated that the parameter with the greatest influence on project NPV and IRR is the level of prereduction. This indicates that the relationship between maintaining the optimum pre-oxidation temperature and the degree of prereduction is critical for maximium process efficiency. IntroductionStainless steel is a crucial alloy in modern society. Virgin chromium (Cr) units used in the manufacturing of stainless steel are obtained from ferrochrome (FeCr) – a relatively crude alloy consisting predominantly of Cr and iron (Fe) (Murthy, Tripathy, and Kumar, 2011; Beukes, van Zyl, and Ras, 2012). FeCr is produced mainly by the carbothermic reduction of chromite ore in submerged arc furnaces (SAFs) and direct current arc furnaces (DCFs) (Neizel et al., 2013; Beukes, Dawson, and van Zyl, 2010; Dwarapudi et al., 2013). The energy required to heat, smelt, and reduce the chromite ore to the metallized state is supplied by electricity (Pan, 2013). FeCr production is an energy-intensive process, with a specific electricity consumption (SEC) varying from 2.4 MWh/t to more than 4.0 MWh/t FeCr produced, depending on the process applied (Pan, 2013; Neizel et al., 2013). Daavittila, Honkaniemi, and Jokinen (2004) stated that the typical operational costs of FeCr smelters can be divided into four categories, i.e. chromite ore (30%), carbonaceous reductant (20%), electricity (30%), and other production costs (20%). This makes electricity consumption the joint largest factor that influences operational costs in FeCr production."

"Face mapping is a simple but invaluable means of geological and geotechnical data acquisition whereby intact rock properties, rock mass properties, discontinuity properties, and structural orientation can be assessed. Although traditionally done via direct contact with the mapping face through techniques such as line mapping or window mapping, remote face mapping using various digital techniques has become increasingly popular in recent years. Sishen is a large open pit mining operation requiring a comprehensive geotechnical data-set to evaluate pit wall design and stability with the necessary level of confidence. Geotechnical borehole data, face mapping data, geotechnical laboratory testing data, and implicit structural models provide the main sources of this information. Although a large geotechnical borehole database has always been maintained at the mine, face mapping has in the past been restricted to sporadic and isolated stability assessments. In 2013 the mine acquired a terrestrial laser scanner with the resolution, photographic capabilities, and software required to carry out geotechnical face mapping. A face mapping procedure was set up based on accepted face mapping methods, the data requirements of the mine, and capabilities of the laser scanner system. Mapping data obtained from the scans was integrated into the Acquire geological data management system, a purpose-designed structured query language (SQL) database system used for storing the mine’s geotechnical data. Within the geotechnical design process, having face mapping data available has improved confidence in the properties of the rock mass and structural environment, allowing for better definition of geotechnical design sectors. Overall, the face mapping and geotechnical analysis features of the terrestrial laser scanner in use make it an invaluable geotechnical data capture tool, provided a system is in place to store mapping data in a manner that allows for meaningful rock mass and structural information to be produced. IntroductionFundamental to the geotechnical design process is the acquisition of a reliable and complete geotechnical data-set. Geotechnical data acquisition will typically commence during the early stages of a project and continue well into the operational life of the mine, with the data confidence progressively increasing as the amount of data captured increases. Sishen mine currently bases all open pit geotechnical designs and geotechnical risk assessment on geotechnical borehole data in conjunction with interpreted structural models. Boreholes are logged and the data is captured in an ongoing process. This process forms the initial step in the geotechnical design and risk assessment process whereby the raw data is used to classify the strength properties for each lithology, provide inputs for geotechnical block models, and ultimately provide the inputs for slope design analyses. To date, borehole data has provided the only largescale, organized data-set for input into geotechnical analyses at Sishen. Although borehole data is the best and most comprehensive form of geotechnical data, there are some shortfalls that can be addressed by other data collection methods. Computational modelling methods and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) were employed to investigate the interaction of a pyrite surface with thiol collectors. Modelling work was conducted in the presence and absence of water. Microcalorimetry was employed to investigate the resultant energy of interaction pyrite as a result of mineral-collector interactions. Sodium ethyl xanthate (SEX), diethyldithiocarbamate (DTC) and diethyl dithiophosphate (DTP) were investigated in this study. The results showed that the calculated surface energies and morphologies for FeS2 showed that (100) and (111) are the most stable surfaces. The morphology also indicated the appearance of the (100) and (111) surface facets and no presence of others. The calculated adsorption energies between thiol collectors and the pyrite surface were always more exothermic than the experimentally determined ones. When comparing different ligand types with the same alkyl chain length, the heat of adsorption of diethyl-DTC was greater than that of ethyl xanthate and diethyl-DTP for pyrite. Experimentally, the diethyl DTP barely adsorbed onto the pyrite surface and this may be due to a different mechanism of action. In computational calculations, water adsorption was found to reduce the reactivity of the Fe atom for the interaction with thiol collectors, and bring the adsorption energies closer to the magnitude of the experimental values. Mineral Resources estimation plays a crucial role in the profitability of the future of mining operations. The conventional geostatistical methods used for grade estimation require expertise, understanding and knowledge of the spatial statistics, resource modelling, geology, mining engineering as well as clean validated data to build accurate block models. However, the geostatistical models are sensitive to changes in data and would have to be rebuilt on newly acquired data with different characteristics, which has proved to be a time-consuming process. Machine learning methods have in recent years been proposed as an alternative to the geostatistical methods to alleviate the problems these might suffer from in Mineral Resource estimation. In this paper, a systematic literature review of machine learning methods used in Mineral Resource estimation is presented. This has been conducted on such studies published during the period 1990 to 2019. The types, performances, and capabilities, of several machine learning methods have been evaluated and compared against each other, and against the conventional geostatistical methods. The results, based on 31 research studies, show that the machine learningbased methods have outperformed the conventional grade estimation modelling methods. The review also shows there is active research on applying machine learning to grade estimation from exploration through to exploitation. Further improvements can be expected if advanced machine learning techniques are to be used.

The theme of this Colloquium, survival strategies, not only conveys a sense of urgency but also takes cognizance of the fact that, as in the political arena, tough decisions have to be made and acted upon in the years to come. It is therefore appropriate that the SAIMM, as spokesman for the metallurgical industry, should be dealing with these issues at this time, and I wish to commend the organizers of this Colloquium for focusing on a mater as important as the future of this great industry. In view of this, I regard it as an honour and privilege to officiate on this occasion, where the best of South Africa's brain power in the metallurgical field will be harnessed with a view to moulding strategies for survival.

The development of short- and medium-term mine production schedules in isolation from each other has meant that only a local optimum can be achieved when each scheduling phase is carried out. The globally optimal solution, however, can be achieved when integrating scheduling phases and accounting for the interaction between short-term and medium-term activities simultaneously. This paper addresses the task of integrating short- and medium-term production plans by combining the short-term objective of minimizing deviation from targeted mill feed grade with the medium-term objective of maximizing net present value (NPV) into a single mathematical optimization model. A conceptual sublevel stoping operation comprising 30 stopes is used for trialling segregated and integrated scheduling approaches. Segregated medium- and short-term scheduling using separate models achieved an NPV of $42 654 456. The final scheduling approach involved integrating the two scheduling horizons using the newly-developed globally optimal integrated production scheduling model to achieve an NPV of $42 823 657 with smoother mill feed grade. The larger the stope data set, the larger the difference between the two scheduling approaches is likely to be. At the very least, an integrated approach ensures feasibility across the two scheduling horizons, which cannot always be assumed when using a segregated approach.

One of the earliest records of metal recovery by solution leaching is described by Agricola as 'juice of rock' in the 1550s. In these early years of hydrometallurgy and civil engineering, few controls and systems were employed to enhance recovery and protect the environment. Since that time, leaching (dump or heap) operations have made significant strides in increasing metal and solution recovery while protecting the environment, all goals of a sustainable operation. It is now recognized that the design and operation of modern heap leach facilities requires contributions from many fields of study, including hydrometallurgy, civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, unsaturated-flow hydrology, mine planning, geosynthetics engineering, geochemistry, process engineering, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering. While advancements in these fields have resulted in more sustainable heap leach operations, challenges in the industry still exist. A number of heap leach operations exhibit poor or lower-than-predicted metal recovery, loss of solution flow and control within the ore heap, loss of ore heap stability under leach, failure of liner and/or solution recovery systems, and overtopping of process water ponds. A number of these issues may be the result of several compounding conditions. For example, poor metal recovery may be due to an inadequate scale-up assumption (scaling laboratory tests to field-size heaps), lack of control of the in-heap geochemical environment, changes in ore mineralogy from the original design, changes in mechanical and hydraulic properties of the ore from the original design, ore handling and pre-treatment, inadequate solution management system, and inadequate solution application. The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss issues that may affect the sustainability of a heap leach operation. Since sustainability encompasses a broad range of topics and issues, the focus of this paper will be on issues affecting metal and solution recovery, solution flow and containment, and stability of the ore heap.
