Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, sulphur, SO2, off-gas, Zimplats Zimplats embarked on an off-gas sampling campaign in December 2009 to characterise the concentration of SO2 in the off-gas from their 13 MW furnace. In excess of forty isokinetic samples (US EPA Method 8) were taken over seven days. The aim of the sampling campaign was to increase the understanding of factors that influence sulphur release from sulphide concentrates in an electric furnace. Specifically, detailed monitoring was conducted over various operating conditions to evaluate: ? The relationship between SO2 and feed rate (i.e. furnace power) ? The relationship between SO2 and ingress (i.e. furnace freeboard pressure) ? The impact of concentrate bed thickness on SO2 (i.e. blacktop) ? The effect of events such as tapping and converter slag return on SO2 ? The desulphurization reactions that take place in the blacktop A model was developed to predict the SO2 content in furnace off-gas for a particular set of operating conditions. In order to evaluate the impact of random, uncorrelated changes in concentrate composition, ingress and power (feed rate) on the SO2 content of the off-gas, a Monte Carlo approach was adopted whereby concentrate composition, power, and ingress were allowed to vary randomly around selected set-points. The model is primarily based on the release of ?labile? sulphur from the partial thermal dissociation of sulphide minerals with an over-stoichiometric sulphur content (e.g., Fe7S8 decomposition to FeS and S). The main findings of this work suggest that labile sulphur does not fully account for the measured SO2 content of the off-gas, and that limited oxidation of sulphides during melting also contributes to the SO2 content. Details of sulphide oxidation reactions in the furnace remain unclear, and it is currently not possible to provide a theoretical framework for the relationship between the extent of oxidation and variables such as temperature, gas composition, particle size, and residence time in the furnace black top. Through the use of the Monte Carlo model it was, however, possible to constrain the extent of sulphide oxidation to about 1%. This work has shown in practice what was expected in concept, that SO2 in off-gas is proportional to furnace power and ingress rate. The model that was developed consistently slightly under-predicts the quantity of SO2 generated. It also highlights that more work is required to better understand the analytical methods used to analyse for SO2 in off-gas.

The use of machine vision in the monitoring and control of metallurgical plants has become a very attractive option in the last decade, especially since computing power has increased drastically in the last few years. The use of cameras as a non-intrusive measurement mechanism not only holds the promise of uncomplicated sampling but could provide more consistent monitoring, as well as assistance in decision making and operator and metallurgist training. Although the very first applications of machine vision were in the platinum industry, no automated process control has been developed for platinum group metals (PGMs) as yet. One of the reasons is that to date froth features could not be related to key performance indicators, such as froth grade and recovery. A series of laboratory experiments was conducted on a laboratory-scale platinum froth flotation cell in an effort to determine the relationship between the platinum grade and a combined set of image features and process conditions. A fractional factorial design of experiments was conducted, investigating 6 process conditions, namely air flow rate (x1), pulp level (x2), collector dosage (x3), activator dosage (x4), frother dosage (x5) and depressant dosage(x6), each at levels. Videos were recorded and analysed to extract 20 texture features from each image. By using artificial neural networks (ANN), the nonlinear relationship between the image variables and process conditions and the froth flotation grades could be established. Positive results indicate that the addition of image features to process conditions could be used as sufficient input into advanced model based control systems for flotation plants. A Seismic Hazard Scale (SHS) has been developed to provide a practical seismic hazard assessment tool applicable to mine site personnel. It has been applied to seismic data sets from numerous Western Australian mines. The SHS is applicable when quantifying seismic hazard on a mine wide scale, on a mining block scale, and on a local cluster-by-cluster scale. Spatial mapping of variations in seismic hazard is a particularly powerful application of the scale. The SHS is sensitive to temporal increases in seismic hazard. It has also been shown that the SHS can be applied to estimate seismic hazard when seismic monitoring data are not available. The SHS is a simple derivation of the Gutenberg-Richter relation. There are assumptions and limitations to the SHS that need to be considered when applying it to mine seismicity data.

Slag-metal equilibrium experiments were conducted at 1500ºC and1580ºC under 0.03 atm, 0.05 atm and 0.83 atm CO partial pressures using silica and Cr-oxide crucibles. The complex slags belonged toSiO2-CaO-Al2O3-MgO-FeOx-CrOxand the metal phase to the Cr-Fe-C-Si-(S) systems. The carbon saturation of the metal phase was avoided using oxide crucibles and thus the results are pertinent to ferrochromium refining slags and processes. From equilibrium data and thermodynamic calculations, the CrO /(CrO+Cr2O3) ratio in the slag was determined as 0.75, 0.80 and 0.86 under 0.83 atm and 0.05 atm of CO pressure at 1500ºC and 0.03 atm and CO pressure at1580ºC, respectively. The results clearly demonstrated that a higher chromium content of the metal results in higher Cr in the slag, and chromium in slag decreases with increasing SiO2. The results were also sensitive to the crucibles used as these oxide crucibles saturated the slag either with respect to SiO2or Cr-oxides. It was also demonstrated that the relative amount of CrO in the slag was higher when SiO2crucibles were used in accord with thermo-dynamic calculations. Iso-concentration curves for carbon and chromium of the metal phase in equilibrium with the slag were drawn on a pseudo ternary SiO2? (AI2O3+CaO+MgO) ?(Cr2O3+Fe2O3) diagram. The activity coefficients and activities of carbon and chromium of the metal phase were also calculated from the experimental data and available thermodynamics information and were plotted as iso-activity curves in the same pseudo ternary diagram. Uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and shear strength parameters(cohesion and angle of internal friction, Cand F) of rocks are important parameters needed for various engineering projects such as tunnelling and slope stability. However, direct determination of these parameters is difficult and requires high-quality core samples for tests. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the applicability of the Brazilian test (BT) - a simple, less sophisticated and inexpensive method for both specimen preparation and testing - to estimate the UCS and shear strength parameters of rocks. Thirty-seven rock types were sampled and tested, 24of which were volcanic, 8 were metamorphic, and 5 were sedimentary. Statistical equations were derived to estimate the UCS and shear strength parameters of rocks using the BT. The validity of the statistically derived equations was confirmed using predictive analytics software (PASW Statistics 18). A strong linear relation was found between BT and UCS values. BT and UCS values exhibited prominent linear correlations withthe cohesion values of rocks. The Mohr envelope was also used to determine the cohesion and friction angle of rocks using BT and UCS values. It is deduced from the current study that the BT values can be used to estimate the UCS and cohesion. However, no relation was observed between the angle of internal friction values and the UCS and BT for all rock types. Therefore, different approaches are suggested for the estimation of the internal angle of friction for application in the preliminary design of projects.

The Youga gold mine in Burkina Faso, West Africa, is scheduled to produce first gold in the third quarter of calendar 2007. The project is expected to produce 540 000 oz of gold over 6.5 years, from a conventional open pit carbon in leach mine. The direct capital cost of the project is US$47 M. Etruscan Resources Inc, a Canadian based gold exploration and development company, holds 90 per cent of the project company Burkina Mining Company SA (BMC). The state of Burkina Faso is free-carried for the remaining ten per cent of BMC. RMB Resources Limited, of Melbourne Australia, has arranged a US$35 M project finance facility for BMC (the Borrower) as the majority of funding for the Youga project development. The loan facility was provided by RMB Australia Holdings and Macquarie Bank Ltd (the Lenders) each as to 50 per cent in the lending syndicate. The Lenders also provided a gold hedging facility to guarantee a minimum price for the project's gold production. Burkina Faso is a francophone country, part of the Economic and Monetary Union of West Africa (UEMOA). The project financing is the first such facility to be arranged for a mining project in Burkina Faso, with little or no precedent available in other UEMOA countries. Therefore, while the Youga gold project is forecast to be a robust project applying conventional mining and processing methods, a number of legal, technical, commercial and social issues required identification, evaluation and resolution before the loan could be established. This paper describes that evaluation process and the resolution of these issues. In-house experience and expertise in both the Lenders' and Borrower's teams has facilitated a greater understanding and `ownership' of the issues and hence provided comfort with risks which might not normally be taken in conventional project developments and project financings. As a result, blanket external reviews were not required by the Lenders. A long-standing relationship between Etruscan and RMB Resources also facilitated solutions to a number of issues. Nevertheless, a degree of flexibility by the Lenders, the Borrower and Etruscan was required to successfully close the financing.

A localized nonlinear recoverable resource estimate technique has been applied using typical feasibility or new mining drilling data configurations drawn from a massive database from a mined-out area on a hydrothermal gold deposit. The results were then compared with the corresponding 8 m x 5 m grid grade-control data in order to determine the efficiency of the approach and the validity of the recoverable resource estimates for mine planning and financial forecasts.

The assessment of overall modulus (or stiffness) of a fractured weak to moderately strong rock mass is a key parameter in the design of civil engineering works in these materials. It also provides the highest level of uncertainty due to scale effects, anisotropy and the influence of joint frequency and joint stiffness. Using the example of the Melbourne Mudstone, this paper compares approaches using empirical rules based on intact rock strength, laboratory testing, in situ field testing, semi-quantitative assessment techniques based on rock mass classification and back analyses. L'évaluation du module (ou rigidité) global d’une masse rocheuse faible et fissurée a modérément forte est un paramètre principal dans la conception des travaux du génie civil dans ces types de matériaux. Elle fournit également le niveau le plus élevé d'incertitude due aux effets d’échelle, à l'anisotropie et à l'influence de la fréquence et de la rigidité des joints rocheux. Reduction interactions in solid phases are widespread and occur in most complex metallurgical processes. Among these processes, reactions between oxides and carbon have a special importance. The authors conducted experiments for comparison of reduction by different reducing agents of impregnated chromite ores, in which grains of the reducible chromite spinel are isolated from direct contact with the reducing agent by layers of non-ore material. The results of the experiments have revealed that the beginning of reduction is preceded by thermal and impurity order-disorder transformation of the oxide lattice whilst the transformation of the oxide lattice into the metal lattice takes place as a result of removal of oxygen anions from the zone of metal germ nucleation. Since anions are charge carriers, increase of their mobility can be monitored by changes in electrical conductivity of oxides. Respective measurements of electrical resistance of ores of different metals and a number of pure refractory oxides under heating have indicated that the beginning of reduction coincides with the time of drastic (tens of thousands times) increase of conductivity of the oxides. Besides, the temperature of the beginning of carbon-thermal reduction is in line with the Tammann temperature, i.e. the temperature of transition from the predominantly surface diffusion to volume diffusion. Segregation of metals from the oxide lattice occurs as a result of merging of anion vacancies with defect electrons on defects of the oxide lattice. The transformation of the oxide lattice into the metal lattice requires a certain concentration of anion vacancies and inflow of electrons from the reducing agent to the site of metal segregation. Such inflow has no difficulties due to the mixed anion-electron nature of high-temperature conductivity of oxides. Thus, the reduction is not determined by oxygen diffusion, it is determined by oxygen vacancies diffusion whose speed exceeds the speed of oxygen diffusion by orders of magnitude. This determines that the kinetics of reduction considerably exceeds the kinetics of oxidation at similar temperatures since oxidation proceeds by means of mass transfer of oxygen through the layer of the generated oxide.

The South African coal mining industry is currently disposing of about 10 million tons of ultra-fine coal (<150 µm) per year. Once discarded, these sulphur-containing ultra-fines contribute to several environmental problems. As part of a project initiated by the Water Research Commission to investigate the use of Cleaner Production (CP) in the mining industry, a study was carried out to determine whether a CP approach could be used to identify opportunities to reduce this coal waste, and to determine which of these opportunities would be most feasible. In order to do this, a CP assessment was conducted at three case study collieries in the South African Witbank coalfield. Mass-balancing and sampling, followed by laboratory characterisation tests and site surveys, were used to determine the quantity, quality and sources of the ultra-fine coal at the three collieries. Literature reviews, brainstorming sessions and interviews then followed to generate the CP options. An environ-mental, economic and technical feasibility assessment was then prepared for each option, to determine the most viable interventions for implementation. A number of opportunities were identified through the assessment. By preventing coarser coal from being discarded with the ultra-fine coal, the quantity of coal disposed of could be decreased at all three collieries, and by up to 24% in one case. Increasing the crusher top size would reduce the amount of coal that is milled to less than 150 µm, so that less is wasted. The ultra-fines that have already been disposed of on slurry dams can be completely reclaimed and converted into a valuable product, which can be sold as power station feedstock. The newly processed ultra-fines could be beneficiated using flotation and exported together with the coarser coal. The results of the assessments thus suggested that workable CP opportunities to reduce ultra-fine coal wastage exist at the sites investigated, and that their feasibility is colliery-specific. The associated financial benefits of the proposed options suggested that CP is a realistic approach to addressing environmental problems. Abstract For the feasibility study of an underground waste disposal the characterization of the coupled behaviour of the host rock is required: Because of the very low permeability of these formations few experimental data are generally available. In this framework the uses of the sensitivity studies could orient the experimental efforts by highlighting the key parameters of the formation. This paper gives a first approach of the sensitivity studies performed with probabilistic methods in the geomechanical field. A one dimensional model which characterizes the thermohydromechanical response of an argillaceous rock to the excavation of a waste canister site and its setting up, is considered. Zusammenfassun Die Machbarkeitsstudie eines tiefliegenden Endlagers für radioaktive Abfälle beinhaltet die Untersuchung des gekoppelten Verhaltens des im Lagerbereich anstehenden Gesteins. Aufgrund der sehr geringen Wasserdurchlässigkeit dieser Formationen liegen häufig nur wenige experimentelle Angaben vor. Die Verwendung von Sensibilitätsstudien kann in diesem Zusammenhang als Hilfsmittel zur Entscheidungsfindung dienen. Dabei sollen die maßgeblichen Eigenschaften der Formation festgestellt werden, anhand derer der Umfang der experimentellen Erkundung festgelegt werden kann. Dieser Artikel stellt einen ersten Ansatz zur Durchführung von Sensibilitätsstudien mittels einer mechanisch-probablistischen Kopplung im Bereich der Geomechanik sowie die Vorteile gegenüber Parameterstudien vor. Zur Abbildung des thermohydromechanischen Stoffverhaltens von tonigem Fels während der Schachterstellung und der Einlagerung der Abfälle wird ein eindimensionales Model verwendet. Résumé L&apos;étude de faisabilité d&apos;un centre de stockage de déchets radioactifs en profondeur passe par la caractérisation du comportement couplé de la roche hôte. Du fait de la très faible perméabilité de ces formations, souvent peu de données expérimentales sont disponibles. Dans ce cadre l&apos;utilisation d&apos;études de sensibilité permettrait d&apos;orienter les efforts expérimentaux en faisant ressortir les caractéristiques primordiales de la formation. Cet article présente une première approche de la réalisation d&apos;études de sensibilités à l&apos;aide de couplages mécano-fiabilistes dans le domaine de la géomécanique. Un model unidimensionnel caractérisant la réponse thermohydromécanique d&apos;une roche argileuse au creusement d&apos;un puit de stockage et à la mise en place de conteneurs de déchets est considéré.

Mining companies are challenged with increased difficulty in delivering capital projects on schedule and within budget. In 2005, PricewaterhouseCoopers global review of major capital projects in the mining industry only 2.5% of projects could be defined as successful when assessed across the four critical dimensions of scope, cost, schedule and business benefits. Thus 97.5% of major mining capital projects were not successful according to the criteria PricewaterhouseCoopers used. Normally if a project fails on all these criteria it indicates scope creep. Scope creep refers to the change in a project&apos;s scope after the project work has started. As a result, the projects drift away from their original design, timeline, and budget, and as a consequence destroy business benefits. The major reasons for scope creep are poor change control and the lack of proper front end loading. Change control and front end loading are based on project processes in the planning and monitoring & control process group of the Project Management Body of Knowledge1 (PMBOK). This paper will focus on key factors to consider during project scheduling/planning with special reference to cost and schedule (using Microsoft Project as a tool although the principal is universal)

IMFA Group is the largest producer of Charge chrome not only in India but also in Asia. This Group has plants situated at Therubali and at Choudwar. They also have a Thermal power plant at Choudwar which not only caters to the power requirement of Choudwar plant but also supplies power to Therubali. The plants are fed for Chromite ore through the captive mines namely Nuasahi Chromite mines (40.47 Ha) , Bangur Chromite mines(37.34Ha), Sukinda chromite mines (116.76 Ha), Mahagiri Chromite Mine(73.777 Ha) and Chingudipal Chromite mines (26.62 Ha). Nuasahi Chromite Mine, which is situated in Keonjhar district, is an underground mine and is based upon best technological advancements in the industry. The underground mining operation is certified under ISO-9002, ISO-14001and OHSAS 18001. This not only shows the concern for the quality, environment but also for the health of the employees. The Nuashahi is the first chromite mine to backfill the opencast excavations created during the last 50 years and carry out the production from underground area below the opencast workings. This paper deals with the state of art technology of sub-level open stopping in thin ore bodies. The under-ground mine openings was started in the year 1997. In next four years the production of chromite from underground was started.(2001). At present the mine is in a good shape with several running stopes. Today it is producing around 10,000 Mt per month of chromite. The development of the mine is carried out with an average of 200 mtr per month of tunneling. The mine is having a mechanical ventilator having a capacity of24000 M3 per hour at 50mm water gauge, thus feeding sufficient air for the persons working in underground. The mine is being dewatered through a most modern positive suction sump, having a capacity of 500 cum and operated with 120 HP pumps. After commissioning of this sump in the year 2003, the mine has taken a quantum jump in production with remarkable saving in power consumption.

The aim of the hybrid location method is to improve seismic event locations by reducing the effects of errors in the wave velocity of ray paths between each event and each recording site. We report on further enhancements made to the hybrid location algorithm, which is based on the double-difference method developed by Spottiswoode and Milev1and Waldhauser and Ellsworth2. The term ?double-difference? refers to the residuals between the observed and theoretical travel-time differences and are obtained using either picked arrival times or various measures of time differences obtained from waveform pairs. These residuals are minimized for pairs of earthquakes at each station while linking together all observed event-station pairs. An important enhancement is that the double-difference term uses the median arrival time residuals to reduce the effect of outliers on the system of equations. In addition, the hybrid locations are further constrained by considering events of known locations, in this case along lines of development blasts. We relocated some 20 000 previously located seismic events in the Driefontein 5E area; 5 800 of these events were considered to have been development blasts and we constrained their locations to lie on the straight lines joining about 2 150 survey pegs from the mine?s database. Relocated events were shown to distribute more closely around advancing faces than had been the case before relocation. Wave velocities from the development blasts show evidence of anisotropy.

Safety nets have been used selectively in several South African mines over the years. Recently, however, an increased emphasis on mine safety has seen a resurgence of their utilization underground. This renewed interest has, however, also raised questions about the design and performance of these nets and their practical applications underground; these are the subjects of this paper. Generally, mine safety nets are used to protect personnel from falling rock in temporarily supported development ends, tunnels, ASGs and stopes. These diverse applications each require specific net designs, resulting in a wide product range. As a rule, however, mine safety nets need to carry specified static or dynamic loads with the least possible deformation. Because of the application-specific characteristics of mine safety nets, there is no South African national standard for them. Consequently, neither the SABS, nor the CSIR, performs standard tests on these components. In 2007, therefore, SIMRAC made available their Savuka facility for the testing of mine safety nets; the Savuka drop test became the accepted industry test standard for mine safety nets. From late 2007 to mid 2009, Norsenet, in collaboration with SRK Consulting, the designated operators of the site, conducted approximately 200 tests, which formed the core of Norsenet&apos;s database of safety net performance under various loading conditions. The test specimens comprised a wide range of net materials and config¬urations; the materials included: high density polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, nylon, as well as a blend of polyester and polypropylene used primarily for reinforcement ropes. Net configurations encompassed the following parameters: net type, i.e., knotted nets or sewn nets; net strand type, i.e., braids, twines, or webbing; strand size; mesh size; mesh orientation, i.e., parallel or oblique to the net edge; net edge reinforcement, i.e., knotted, tied, with or without reinforcement ropes; internal reinforcement ropes, i.e., diagonal ropes and/or orthogonal ropes; as well as net attachment options, including loops and chainlinks. From the number of variables listed above, and the limited number of tests available, it can be appreciated that the findings of the test series required careful scrutiny. Nevertheless, principal performance factors clearly emerged: besides the obvious net mesh variables, such as net strand material, strand diameter and mesh size, it was the configuration of the reinforcement ropes and their attachment to the net panel which had the strongest influence on net performance. All the structural elements of a safety net need to work together to transfer the imposed load from the net panel, through the reinforcement ropes, to the net attachment points. In this load transference chain, the weakest link limits the strength of the structure. From this development work, Norsenet has gained valuable expertise to custom-design and manufacture nets to clients&apos; specifications. The examples presented in the paper will also show the experience acquired in the installation of nets underground. Future work will include the establishment of a state-of-the-art net testing facility at Norsenet&apos;s factory in Vredenburg.. "Kell is a hydrometallurgical treatment option for the recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs), gold, silver, and base metals from flotation concentrates to refined products on site. The process is cyanidefree, while eliminating emissions of sulphur dioxide, arsenic trioxide, and other toxic species often emitted by smelters and roasters. Kell has been tested on a range of concentrates, including PGMs (UG2, Merensky, Platreef, Great Dyke, Great Lakes, Lake Superior and others), refractory gold-silver, coppergold, and polymetallic concentrates. High extraction efficiencies (>95%) are achieved for value metals (Pt, Pd, Rh, Au, Ag, Ni, Cu, Co) and secondary metals (Sb, Zn, Pb, and others). Studies comparing Kell with smelter-refining show economic benefits: capex 18–33% of smelting; opex 51–66%; electricity consumption 13–46%; and environmental benefits: greenhouse gas emissions 57–61% of smelting, acidification 5–27%, human toxicity 37–62%, and freshwater ecotoxicity 43–55% of smelting. Synergies for Kell plants alongside smelter-refineries include utilization of recovered acid from sulphur abatement systems and excess capacity in precious metal refineries. Kell is unconstrained by concentrate grade and impurities, allowing the co-location of Kell plants for treatment of non-smeltable concentrates alongside existing smelters.Kell has been demonstrated in a nine-week integrated pilot campaign at 1:1000 scale, supporting a bankable feasibility study for a 110 000 t/a plant treating a UG2-Merensky concentrate at Pilanesberg Platinum Mine (PPM), owned by Sedibelo Platinum Ltd, which has along with South African Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), invested in Kell. Zimbabwean Mining Development Corporation (ZMDC) has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with KellTech for a centralized PGM concentrate processing plant."

The WEMCO Heavy Media Drum Separator was first introduced by WEMCO in California in the 1940`s, initially from their base in San Francisco and later when the company moved to Sacramento. The WEMCO Company became a part of EIMCO Process Equipment in 1985, and in 2002 EIMCO became a part of the GL&V Group when Dorr-Oliver EIMCO was created. Throughout this period of time the WEMCO Drum has been installed on a variety of different applications and is now operating at the heart of many of the world?s largest Minerals and Coal Processing Plants, as well as being used by many smaller producers and metal re-cycling operations. This paper looks at the practical aspects of using WEMCO Drums in a representative range of processing applications.

"Gasification is a process of thermal conversion of solid carbonaceous materials into a gaseous fuel called syngas. Coal gasification is an efficient technology for a range of systems for producing low-emission electricity and other high-value products such as chemicals, synthetic fuels, etc.The paper presents the High-Temperature Winkler (HTW) gasification process, which is designed to utilize low-rank feedstock such as coals with high ash content, lignite, biomass etc. The process is characterized by a bubbling fluidized bed, where coal devolatilization and partial oxidation and gasification of coal char and volatiles take place, and by a freeboard where partial combustion and gasification of coal char take place.The recent development of the high-pressure HTW process is reviewed. Gasification of low-rank, high-ash coals with respect to gasification temperatures, conversion rates, and syngas quality is also discussed. The main HTW design steps required for an industrial-scale design are presented. Special attention is given to the process modelling, including global thermodynamic calculation as well as detailed CFD-based simulation of a reacting fluidized bed. Three-dimensional numerical results of the HTW process are also provided and discussed."

What is not measured cannot be managed. This is true of most things, including a furnace lining. This paper describes a Lining Management System used for this purpose. It provides the operations staff with a management tool to predict long term lining life and acts as a process optimisation tool. It alarms and records upset furnace conditions. Outputs from the system are described as presented through a specially developed software package and interface. It includes vertical and horizontal furnace sections showing estimated isotherms through the lining as well as the furnace bath. It also shows calculated heat flux values, estimated lining wear and the freeze layer profile. A novel three-dimensional display is described which provides the operator with a big picture view of the furnace crucible profile under real time operating conditions. The powerful trending facility for analysing both measured and calculated values is discussed. The required instrumentation hardware as well as the installation thereof is described, with special reference to an electrically insulating thermocouple socket design. Finally feedback is provided on the first year?s performance of the system installed on an open ferrochrome furnace at Assmang Chrome, Machadodorp, South Africa.
