The technique involves the removal, in one piece, of an unwanted concrete pile section, exploiting the principle of crack propagation induced using gas pressure. The device, or pod, is made of a container in which an over-pressure is generated. After a predetermined time delay of 72 hours, gas and pressure are produced by the reaction between a calcium base chemical and water.

In the March/April 2006 issue of the Journal, we published an ethical dilemma called “Blowing the Whistle.” We received many interesting responses to the article as requested. Some of the responses are printed here. We’ve also included “Blowing the Whistle” again in this issue as a refresher on page 37. Dear Editor, It is in my own personal belief that it would be extremely important if I were the blaster to take the following steps. 1. Hold an immediate emergency meeting with the contractor to convince them to stop work at this point.2. This meeting would need to be held with all powers that be in this construction company. This helps eliminate the hearsay (excluding the farmer). 3. Explain the entire situation to the contractors as it has been presented to the blaster by the farmer. 4. Recommend calling in an engineering or geological firm with the expertise to investigate this matter immediately, and take all immediate action based on findings. 5. Follow up with farmer allow him to speak, (a.k.a. vent) and assure him proper steps are being taken to come to resolve this matter. 6. Be a good listener, and communicator with the farmer while investigation is being conducted. 7. Should the contractor not want, or take any of these recommendations, the blaster himself and his company should question even working for this company ever again. This in itself would not be the class of people we would want to be associated with EVER.

Maules Creek mine is an open cut coal near Boggabri in the Gunnedah Basin of New South Wales, Australia. The mine is currently operating at an annualised run rate of 9.5Mt of saleable coal. The plan is to ramp up production to 13Mtpa. Maules Creek has multiple seams each with varying depths; the inter-burden ranges from a few metres thick to greater than 30m (98ft). Due to this, Maules Creek mine is utilising truck shovel operations rather than a cast/dozer push operation.

Maintaining a continuous mining process during thunderstorms is one of the primary challenges in Peru's open-pit mines. Safety protocols necessitate the establishment of exclusion zones to minimize the risks of unplanned detonations. During such conditions, loading and hauling equipment must be relocated or, in the worst case, halted, directly affecting productivity (t/h). Implementing a wireless initiation system mitigates the risk of unplanned detonations during electrical storms by eliminating the use of electrical cables that are susceptible to electrical discharge. This study documents the implementation of this system in a copper mine located over 3,500 meters above sea level in Peru, where electrical storms between December and March necessitate modifications to blasting schedules and limit the number of drills fired per event. Through a test using wireless detonators, a key performance indicator (KPI) was established to ensure safe and continuous operation during thunderstorms. The results were significant: 20 blasts were successfully executed, firing approximately 5,000 holes and moving around 10 million tons of material, all without safety incidents or critical operational deviations, achieving zero misfires and no scheduled blast suspensions. Shovels SH001 (ore) and SH002 (waste) continued to operate together for an additional 100 hours continuously during thunderstorms, generating a potential saving of USD 3.3 million by continuously sending ore to the plant during the testing period under stormy conditions. Additionally, the blasting initiation time was reduced by 25%, eliminating two activities that involved the use of surface connection cables. This reduction led to over 150 hours of decreased personnel exposure to interactions with vehicles and environmental hazards such as dust and noise. Furthermore, the number of holes fired in a single event increased by 50%, enhancing the blast tonnage capacity and reducing equipment stops due to evacuation and reentry from two to one.

Description of Project: Tamar Group’s civil division was awarded a contract to implode the Sun Hotel, an abandoned 14-story building located along Bat Yam’s coastline, roughly two kilometers south of Tel Aviv, Israel. On Nov. 6, 2012, Tamar Group’s experts positioned explosives in strategic locations of the building, targeting its central pillars, which then caused the building to collapse within seconds. Tamar Group used a relatively small amount of explosives in order to generate a well-controlled blast. This is the largest scale demolition carried out in Israel to date.

[Executive Director’s note: According to 17th edition of the ISEE Blasters Handbook in its section on trench blasting, “...consideration must be given to the proper venting of gases generated from the blasting. Should those gases spread laterally rather than vent directly to the surface, the gases may travel underground and finally vent well outside of the planned area. Such events may be caused by the strata, soil conditions or root systems, or existing and/or abandoned utilities or other man-made structures. In the worst situation, gases resulting from the detonation such as CO2, CO, and/or NOx may travel through the strata and find their way into basements of nearby homes or businesses. The IME has recommendations on how to minimize this potential problem. Some of the points include removing the overburden and digging the rock immediately after the shot, and drilling vent holes periodically between the ditch and adjacent homes.” The Board of Directors of the International Society of Explosives Engineers has expressed its concern that blasters be made aware of the issue of migration of carbon monoxide resulting from blasting operations. This study is based on a six month study performed for Lee County, Florida. The study was based on blasting for land development and how this type of blasting affects structures. The study is investigates peak particle velocities and the relationship to other environmental and manmade forces that affect structures. The study also explores the effect of geology on blast vibration. After completion in Lee County, the study was then continued in the quarry environment in Vermont and extremely tight blasting environment of New York City. Charge diameters were 127mm (5 inches) or less.

This paper relates some of the experiences, good and bad, of blasting adjacent to residences of the primary author during his 15+ years of field blasting in the Northern Great Plains region. During this highly-rewarding blasting career, the author has become aware of two major issues in residential blasting: 1) What we call “Risk/Reward Ratio.”Some questions that must be asked by the blaster prior to taking on any blasting job include: - Can we eliminate or minimize the risk? - Is the reward worth the risk? - Do I have a measure of “nervous confidence” about the shot? 2) Public Relations. Two key elements to public relations are: - Notification - Education All the education in the world to the adjacent populous of what’s happening, of blasting in general, or of what to expect from the blasting does little good without notification. Good public relations is a key to controlling the cost of liability in a litigious society.

A better understanding of the detonation performance of an explosive charge can be gained by directly measuring pressure, temperature and velocity of detonation (VOD). This is particularly important with commercial explosives because their performance is directly influenced by the degree of confinement given by the borehole diameter and the surrounding rock mass. A project funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) was initiated in early 2009 with the view to design and build cost effective prototype instrumentation to measure the relative differences in detonation pressures and temperatures of commercial mining explosives. The project’s primary focus was on low density explosives. Low density (also referred to as low shock) explosives have been available in various forms for nearly 20 years. Identifying the pressure release patterns of both conventional and low density explosives under different geotechnical conditions should provide the necessary information to both validate detonation codes and better define input parameters for breakage and fragmentation models. This paper gives a general description of the prototype instrumentation developed and reports on the results obtained to date in testing the proposed instrumentation in laboratory scale conditions.

The productivity of a loading machine is affected by several factors. One of the most significant is the characteristic of the muck being loaded. A study was conducted to examine the effects of the looseness, angle of repose, size distribution and moisture content of the blasted material on the efficiency of the loading machine. The study was conducted in the following stages: (a) controlled experiments in the lab, (b) tests with loader simulator and (c) field work in an operating mine. It was found that looseness (%void) in the muck increases with the increase in the value of the mean particle size and index of uniformity of the fragmented rock. Looseness and angle of repose affect the fill factor and the digging cycle time of a loader and in turn the productivity of the equipment. Moisture content affects the angle of repose as well as the stickiness of the material to the loader’s bucket. It was observed that the angle of repose increased with the increase in the mean particle size and the moisture content of the muck. It was also found that the bucket full factor and rate of scooping decrease with the increase in the values of mean particle size and index of uniformity. This was also conformed during fieldwork that bucket fill factor decreases with the increase in the mean particle size as well as the index of uniformity.

In these cases, dimensional effects and product heterogeneities become important to proper model the detonation state. Although Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) techniques can provide a complete and exact solution for this problem, its actual computation cost is still not practical for industrial applications. In order to minimize these constrains, a simplified two-dimensional steady non-ideal detonation model for cylindrical stick explosives is developed. Based on an ellipsoidal shock shape approach, the proposed model uses the quasi-one dimensional theory for the axial flow solution and combine the post-shock sonic flow criteria with some limiting conditions for the explosives’ unconfined radius determination. Due to its attractive fitting capability for unconfined detonation experimental data, the model offers the possibility to predict the non-ideal detonation state for any diameter, resulting in a full mapping of the diameter-effect curve of the explosive. Thus, the proposed engineering approach is used to model the main properties of some of the most common ammonium nitrate-based explosives used in mining and quarrying industries, including the complete axial flow solution.

The Atacama Kozan underground mine, located in Tierra Amarilla, Atacama, Chile, was facing over-excavation and slow progress in drift construction, issues associated with the use of traditional explosive, ANFO. The presence of water in the blast holes required as well the use of cartridged emulsions, which extended loading times and increased operators’ effort. With loading times ranging around 76 minutes and lower advanced rate, Enaex Underground proposed the use of a pumpable emulsion-type explosive to optimize blasting, enhance safety, and streamline the operational process. This explosive is loading into the blasting holes using an UBT equipment (Unidad Bombeable para Túneles in spanish). This equipment allows mechanized loading, adaptation to small and medium diameter boreholes, ensuring compatibility with varying drilling profiles, integration with Atacama Kozan’s operational equipment and improvement in environmental and occupational conditions, with a measurable reduction in contaminant emissions and worker exposure risks. The implementation of this emulsion-based explosive allows an increase in productivity in drift development. A notable effective advance rate of 95% to 96% was achieved, alongside a reduction in overbreak in 7%, and a decrease in loading time to 40 minutes. Additionally, there was a 40% occurrence of drilling half cast, contributing to contour drift quality. The operation also benefited from a cleaner and safer working environment, enhancing operator ergonomics and reducing the need for jetanol and compressed air.

One of the main challenges facing mining engineers is to draw up a plan that can be implemented in a timely manner, taking into account the operational variability of the mine’s production processes. These plans are often drawn up based on deterministic modelling (provided there are a set of known inputs that will result in a single set of outputs), when in truth we are talking about stochastic events (the cycles involved behave like random variables and their nature may be studied and reproduced). The result of using this kind of methodology can lead to non-optimized intuitive choices, which may harm the long-term targets defined by the planning team. Based on this principle, this document investigates the simulation of the rock fragmentation process in an open pit mine to assess the stochastic behavior of the loading and haulage operating cycles. The data assessed by the simulation process were the total costs of these operations in function of the powder factor. Based on a sample set data items, it was possible to check the probability distribution of the event as a Poisson distribution, applied to the loading and haulage cycles. The simulation consists of the repeated sequenced reproduction of these events (Monte Carlo simulation), in order to find the configuration that best fits the loading and haulage operations. By integrating these systems, it was possible to better understand the influence of the blasting in these operations, and as such to reduce the associated costs.
