The corrosion of aluminosilicate refractories by soda from three different sources has been studied by microscopic methods. Sodium sulphate from oil ash, sodium chloride used in glazing structural clay products, and sodium borate from borax-impregnated wood ash have fundamentally the same effect on the refractories. The soda is the chief medium of reaction and fluxing, the sulphur, chlorine, and boron being volatized as sulphuric, hydrochloric, and boric acids.INTRODUCTIONBecause of their strong fluxing action, alkalis are one of the main causes of corrosion and slagging of refractories.The action of potash and soda on refractories follows somewhat similar lines, although it is common for one alkali to be greatly in excess of the other. The course of the reaction in a number of cases of alkali attack has been studied by microscopic and chemical methods. For example, the action of potash on blast furnace refractories was studied by Kraner (1942) and Rigby and Richardson (1947), who described the occurrence of various potassium aluminium silicates. Its action on cement kiln refractories was described by Brisbane, Segnit, and Weymouth (1957). The action of soda on glass tank refractories has been studied by many people, for example Bisby (1956) and Resch (1954). In the past decade several significant intrusion-related gold deposits have been discovered in terranes historically exploited for tin-tungsten mineralization (eg Tintina Gold Province, Yukon and Alaska, Tasman Fold Belt, Australia and the Altaid orogenic collage in central Eurasia). This paper presents new data on the geological and geochemical characteristics of these deposits that links them to magmatic-hydrothermal processes and highlights their implications for exploration. New data from several intrusion-related gold provinces suggest that these deposits are found in areas that contain granodiorite to granite, but with a locally significant mafic component, have Rb/Sr ratios ranging between 0.1 and 1.0, and are moderately reduced (Fe2O3/FeO ~ 0.1 to 0.6) ilmenite series, metaluminous, I-types. The intrusions are distinct from porphyry copper intrusions and tin granites, but are more akin to tungsten granites. Hydrothermal fluid types vary with depth of emplacement in intrusion-related gold deposits and new proton induced X-ray emission (PIXE) data from syn-ore fluid inclusions in shallow and deep deposits provide fascinating insight into the variation in metal content between the different settings consistent with observed deposit metal associations. Exploration for intrusion-related gold deposits in tintungsten terranes should focus on regions that contain both mafic and felsic intrusion that are moderately reduced, metaluminous, I-type granites rather than terranes with dominantly highly fractionated, strongly reduced, peraluminous S-types. Intrusion-related gold systems occur in variety of deposit styles (in part controlled by host rock, proximity to granite, and depth of emplacement) and exploration geologists need to be aware of the variety of target types in and around the intrusive environment, and be able to recognise whether they are exploring a shallow or deep intrusion-related gold setting.

'The politics of mining in New Zealand' is a topic I chose myself because of its importance in the future of the New Zealand mining industry. There are many people in the industry who are cynical about politics, cynical about politicians and definitely cynical and often critical of political decisions. In fact, many industry people say they don't want to get involved in politics, they just want to get on with the business of exploration or mining. The point of my address is that politics is important and the industry cannot afford not to participate in the political process.

Review of the mining legislation in New Zealand has coincided with a number of radical changes. These include a redirection of economic management towards a more open and competitive economy; major reform of the state sector aimed at greater efficiency, transparency and accountability; a new environmental administration; and a fundamental review of policy for management of natural and physical resources. These changes provide an opportunity to develop a consistent and coherent approach in the minerals and related statutes that will achieve objectives of economic efficiency, equity, practicability and good environmental management.

When Centaur Mining and Exploration produced nickel metal fromlaterite ore at its Cawse nickel project in January 1999, a new era in the nickel industry was heralded in. One of three new laterite projects commissioned that year, new technology and a unique process design has been combined at Cawse to launch what will be amongst the worldÆs cheapest nickel production. However, the road to success has proven to be long and challenging. Recent, detailed mapping, (Allibone, 1986; Peden, in prep.) of north west Stewart Island, has shown that the Rakeahua Granite (Watters et al, 1968), is comprised of a wide range of granitoid bodies ranging from diorite to leucogranite. As a result of the wide variation in granitoids Allibone (1986), suggests renaming of the Rakeahua Granite to the Rakeahua Granitoid Complex. Names were also proposed for the individual granitoid bodies mapped.

X-ray diffraction and differential thermal methods were used to determine the mineralogy of some clays used by the heavy clay industry in the Adelaide area. A detailed analysis was made of the mineralogy and particle size distribution of eighteen samples from beds in two pits in the Recent sediments in the Adelaide plains, of six white clays developed from the weathering of the Adelaide series of sediments, and of four Recent alluvial clays from a pit in the Mount Lofty ranges south of Adelaide. Structural clay products in the Adelaide area are manufactured from mixtures of these clays, so the mineralogy and particle size distribution was determined of eighteen clay mixtures used to make red bricks, cream bricks, facing bricks, pipes and tiles.Knowledge of this mineralogy is important in understanding the ceramic behaviour of the clays.INTRODUCTIONIn this investigation an account is given of the clay mineralogy and particle size distribution of some ceramic clays from the Adelaide area. The clays are used in the manufacture of structura,l clay products and the results to 'be described are part of an overall 'plan of study covering the heavy industrial clays and shales of Australia. There are a number of hurdles that must be negotiated in order to design an effective gold ore treatment facility such that the expectations forming the basis of project economics are valid and can be achieved in practice. Selecting samples based on geometallurgical context, performing and interpreting testwork relevant to the selected process flowsheet are essential considerations towards achieving this aim. Megascopic and microscopic studies of cleats and mining induced cleavage in Ihe first workings at Leichhardt Colliery reveal the presence of four distinct fracture sets. Microscopic studies confirm underground observations of the fracture sets.The most likely order of formation of the fractures is (i) "butt" cleats (ii) facc cleats (iii) shallow dipping faults (iv) mining induced cleavage. Three fracture sets apparently formed by tensiIe failure. Microscopy shows that the mining induced cleavage surfaces have preferred starting or lerminating points at the extremity of a "butt" cleat and a vitrite-dull coal band boundary. It is postulated that the induced cleavage begins at 'butt' cleats which behave as Griffith flaws under high compression around Leichhardt Colliery faces. Instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas are associated with only those workings which are affected by mining induced cleavage and occur at or adjacent to working faces.

By the use of flotation tests it was confirmed that there are two functions of oxygen in sulphide mineral flotation. Sized samples of galena and chalcopyrite were sulphidized, washed free of excess sulphide ion, and then contacted with air-saturated water for certain lengths of time. The mineral was then transferred to a sealed laboratory flotation cell containing water with a known concentration of dissolved oxygen. Xanthate and frother were added and flotation continued for 1 min.Both the extent of mineral oxidation and the concentration of dissolved oxygen markedly affected the flotation of galena and chalcopyrite. The response to a change in either variable is dependent on the level of the other, but generally best flotation occurs with the maximum degree of air saturation of the pulp. Galena flotation is hindered by oxidation of the mineral beyond a small threshold amount but a similar effect for chalcopyrite was not observed...

For stockpile design, the flowability and structural interfaces are critically dependant on the stress conditions throughout the pile. Historically, the predictive methodologies for stress determination have been too conservative, which adds inefficiency to the stockpile reclaim interface selections, especially for live reclaim stockpile systems. In addition, accurate pressure profiling throughout stockpile is essential to correctly design the stockpile support structures, which are buried within the stockpile. Such buried structures include trestle legs or columns to support load-out conveyors or the roof of bulk storage sheds. Improved methodologies with respect to the development of the hoop stress condition which exists in material ædrawn-downÆ within the stockpile has been developed. This hoop stress approach has significantly improved the live capacity prediction to over 90 per cent accuracy and improved rathole structure prediction within live reclaim stockpiles. Additionally the methodologies in estimating the vertical and circumferential stress variation acting on buried stockpile structures have been significantly progressed, with experimental testing shown good agreement with the theory.CITATION:Williams, K C, Roberts, A W and Prigge, J D, 2013. In March 2012 a combined BHP Billiton and Hatch team embarked on a program to improve the concentrate burner efficiency of BHP Billiton’s Olympic Dam copper flash smelting furnace. A multi-faceted approach including an analysis of the furnace using operational knowledge and first principles engineering led to the design and supply of a new central-lance (disperser). A new, patented, swirl method of introducing the copper concentrate into the furnace was developed to integrate with the existing concentrate burner. Plant trials in 2014 demonstrated an increase of nearly 10 percent in the oxygen efficiency of the furnace. Magnetic anomalies in the Southern Coalfields have been subdivided into two characteristic types. Each type is attributed to a separate cause, one being basement structure, and the other near-surface igneous intrusions.Detailed geological mapping of the area and the ability to sample throughout the coalmines greatly assisted in this subdivision.The Triassic sequence contributes no magnetic effect of its own except to diminish the effect of sources within the underlying formations by raising the level of observation.Detecting the presence of igneous intrusions ahead of colliery working faces by magnetic observations within the coal mines may be of value in preventing accidents caused by gas outbursts and in planning the workings so as to avoid loss of production time.

Since the end of World War n, many important developments have taken place in the investigation of the phenomenon of brittle fracture in mild steel. Fractures in certain classes of welded ships, in welded bridges, penstocks, etc., focussed a great deal of attention on the interrelationships of design factors, service conditions, and steel quality on the generation of catastrophic failures.Much publicity has been given these major failures, and there is perhaps a tendency to forget that mild steel, under certain conditions, as well known to behave in a brittle fashion in a wide range of everyday engineering applications.For instance, many who are connected with the haulage and lifting of heavy loads will be familiar with the bright "crystalline" fractures of crane hooks and chains which sometimes follow sudden jarring; those concerned with the heavy pressing and shaping of steel plate will not be unaware that at times sudden brittle splits or tears will develop for no obvious reason in, say, rolled pipes or in dishings.In fact it will be evident upon reflection that in many cases the conditions which mild steel has to withstand during processing into an engineering part or structure are more severe than those it wili be called upon to endure during service. The ore treatment expansion programme at Mount Isa Mines required the erection of a new lead-zinc concentrator to be known as No. 2 Concentrator. This concentrator was designed by Western-Knapp Engineering Company in conjunction with staff of Mount Isa Mines Limited. Metallurgical design followed conventional wet milling practice, but the size of many plant units is larger than previously used at Mount Isa. The. total capacity of the new plant is 150,000 tons per four weekly period, and the plant is designed to operate in two equal parallel sections.Erection was contracted on a turnkey basis, and the plant was commissioned as a production unit on 23rd June 1966.The existing concentrator, No. I, was converted to treat all copper ore, and the total capacity of the two plants is now 390,000 tons per four weekly period.

Magnetic separator operation in the recovery of magnetite in heavy medium circuits was studied by conducting a series of tests on a full size wet drum magnetic separator.The significant operational variables were found to be feed pan clearance, squeeze pan clearance, dry magnetite feed rate and separator drum speed. With feed and squeeze pan clearances optimized for typical primary separator operation, magnetite loss and concentrate specific gravity were found to be related in a regular manner to dry magnetite feed rate at any drum speed.A two component model of magnetite loss is proposed, relating total magnetite loss to losses in the feed pan and squeeze pan zones. The experimental curves relating magnetite loss to dry magnetite feed rate at the various drum speeds are interpreted in terms of the two component model.The magnetite particle size distribution in the separator was also examined. The tailings magnetite was found to be finer than the feed magnetite only when the dry magnetite feed rate was low, or immediately following the introduction of a new charge of magnetite when the separator was fed at an intermediate dry magnetite feed rate.

Close spatial relationships between the deposits of the Etheridge Goldfield (23 000 kg of bullion) and various regional geological and geophysical features suggest that genesis of the ore deposits was a multi-stage process that started with magmatic and metamorphic stages in the mid-Proterozoic, climaxed with structural and hydrothermal stages in the late Palaeozoic and terminated with an oxidation enrichment stage in the Cainozoic. Acceptance of this hypothesis permits classification of the Georgetown region into areas likely to contain deposits of the Etheridge type and those unlikely to do so. Consequently there is little scope for the discovery of extensions of this field. However, the stratigraphic interval between the source rocks of the Etheridge field and stratigraphically bigger host rocks of the Croydon field may contain disseminated replacement gold deposits of the Carlin type. The potential host (pyritic carbonaceous and locally dolomitic siltstone of the Candlow Formation) is locally faulted and cut by granitoids and the extension of a mineralised, long-standing zone of structural weakness.

Tapira Mine (Tapira, MG, Brazil) is the largest phosphate ore and concentrate producer in Brazil. The mine is an open pit, which until recently operated with a large equipment fleet and now uses a smaller fleet operated by contractors. The annual production reaches 17 Mt of ore plus 14 Mt of waste at a stripping ratio of 0.82. Defining the geological boundaries and forecasting the annual production can be a difficult task if not performed on a reliable model. The geological model has been totally reviewed as well as the estimation process. Ordinary Kriging has been used to build the new block model with P2O5 and contaminant grades. After estimation, block model validation and classification criteria definition to assess resources and reserves, the result is given by the life-of-mine plan is defined after pit optimisation and design. The Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm implemented in the NPV Scheduler was used to define the long-term production targets based on the main parameters P2O5 and the contaminants that are just important to the beneficiation process.
