The structure of the Bulli coal seam at Appin Colliery was detailed by the seismic reflection method. This unusual application of the seismic method was possible because there is a reflector near the seam as was revealed during exploration for petroleum in an area north-west of Appin. The reflector, which was at a depth of 1,500 ft, was shallow by normal reflection survey standards. Measurement of the seismic velocity at two ventilation shafts showed that the reflector was probably the Bulli coal seam. Accurate depth control was established from previous drilling results.INTRODUCTIONAppin Colliery, situated on the Southern Coalfield of N.S.W. (Fig. 1), is being developed to supply coking coal to the Port Kembla steelworks of Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd. The colliery is mechanized and a detailed knowledge of structure, particularly faulting, is important in planning the workings.The Bulli seam, which is approximately 9 ft thick, and between 1,500 ft and 1,800 ft below the surface, is worked in the colliery. It is the uppermost member of the Permian Coal Measures and is overlain by Triassic rocks, which consist of thick sandstone beds containing beds of coloured shales, and which are subdivided into the Narrabeen Group, the Hawkesbury Sandstone, and the Wianamatta Group.In the early stages of development of the colliery, surface geological mapping and diamond drilling provided information on structure. Generalized results of the mapping are shown on Fig. 2. Drilling indicated that the physical and chemical properties of the Bulli seam are relatively constant, and that the seam is nearly horizontal, the average dipbeing about 1 in 25 to the west.

The behaviour of iron ore granules in the feeding process of sintering is significantly influenced by the material properties of the granulated mix. Therefore, the measurement of key material properties of the iron ore granulated mix is indispensable prior to the simulation of the sintering process based on the discrete element method (DEM). In this paper, three key property parameters of the iron ore granulated mix, apparent density, elastic modulus and rolling friction coefficient, were measured in laboratory-scale experiments. For different sintering processes, the moisture content of the granulated mix normally varies according to the specific requirements for granule size distribution and operating conditions. Therefore, understanding the effect of moisture content on the property parameters of iron ore granules is very helpful in accurately determining the property parameters for DEM simulation work. In this paper, six groups of iron ore granule samples with six levels of moisture contents were prepared through granulation and the trends in apparent density, elastic modulus and rolling friction coefficient with the increase of moisture content were plotted and analysed based on the measurement results. The results show that as moisture increases from 6.9 per cent to 9.1 per cent, the apparent density decreases from about 3000 to 2800 kg/m3. With moisture increasing within the same range, the elastic modulus first decreases from over 200 MPa to below 100 MPa and then reaches a relative constant value of about 40 MPa at higher moisture contents. Rolling friction coefficients are measured using two methods with both indicating a similar trend, with the rolling friction coefficient first decreasing and then rising as moisture increases from 6.9 per cent to 9.1 per cent. The leaching of Tellness (Norway) ilmenite concentrate in hydrochloric acid and mixed aqueous HCl-alcohol solutions at boiling temperatures was investigated. It was found that the alcohols methanol, ethanol and ethylene glycol all substantially increased the leach rate and in the case of methanol and ethanol this was achieved at lower boiling temperatures compared with aqueous HC.

The development of a resource project inevitably requires the investigation of a vast range of issues across most engineering disciplines û mining, metallurgical, chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical and environmental û as well as the geosciences. It is also a characteristic feature of the resource industry that no two orebodies û and hence no two development projects û are the same. So these technical issues have to be addressed to a greater or lesser extent in evaluating any resource projectÆs development potential. Not surprisingly then, technical issues tend to predominate when assessing the development potential of a project in the process typically referred to as ædoing a feasibility studyÆ. But the principal purpose of a æfeasibility studyÆ is to determine whether a development opportunity makes good business sense, not just whether it is technically possible. Resolution of technical issues is often seen as the primary focus of a feasibility study, whereas in reality, these technical issues are the basis upon which an asset delivery and business plan is built. This is not to say that technical issues are unimportant û they are a prerequisite to the demonstration of a projectÆs viability. The feasibility study process must therefore demonstrate that not only have the technical issues been satisfactorily addressed, but also that the broader commercial, economic and social issues have been considered in the development of a comprehensive business plan, which includes an assessment of the risk-reward profile of the proposed development. This paper will present a framework for the conduct of æfeasibility studiesÆ and provide guidance to minimum standards and best practice.

About twelve months ago, owing to the increasing quantity of stone and dirt being drawn frQm the Victorian State Coal Mine due to the large amount of dead work below ground, cutting, faults, etc, and to the increasing quan#ty of banded coal beingworked, the writer was forced to consider the question of economy in handling the spoil at the surface. The method in operation at the time was to run out level dumps fro,m the, tipping floor of the heapstead, or brace, and to tip most of the skips of stone in tipplers at the ends of the dumps, the remainder of the skips being side-tipped to widen the dumps.The method, whilst quite satisfactory for dealing with a few skips of stone, was found to be costly as the dumps extended, and the number of skips to be dealt with increased from 300. to 400 per day of two shifts;. therefore, in order to expedite thework and cheapen its cost, the writer devised an improved method which may be qescribed as follows :-(1) The stone is tipped into a hopper car which holds about 10 skips(2) The hopper car is hauled up an inclined dump by means of an electric winch.(3) The spoil is dumped from the car forwards or to either side, as required.(4) The car is returned to the starting point for a further load.Plate I Fig. 1 gives an idea of the construction of the hopper car. The recovery by flotation of some complex uranium minerals such as brannerite and davidite is described. Anionic reagents used for flotation of iron and titanium oxides' are suitable. If care is taken, to emulsify the reagents the slime fractions may be satisfactorilytreated.INTRODUCTIONUranium ores are usually treated by direct leaching with acid or alkali according to the nature of the gangue materials. Concentration of the uranium minerals prior to leaching is not commonly practised because of the earthy nature of most uranium minerals and the difficult mineral dressing problem they pose. Some of the harder complex oxides such as davidite and brannerite are amenable to flotation. This is fortunate since they usually require an expensive, strong acid treat~ent to dissolve the uranium. Flotation tests were commenced in 1949 by officers of the South Australian Department of Mines stationed at Adelaide, first in the School of Mines, then in the University of Adelaide and finally in Departmental mineral dressing laboratories at Thebarton. This paper summarises work undertaken to date as part of an investigation into the mineral resources of the proposedNorth West South Island National Park. The area covered by the proposed national park is underlain by many rock types that have undergone a long and complex history of evolution which has endowed it with some of the best potential for a wide range of different minerals in New Zealand. Many of these minerals occur only in this area or in Fiordland National Park.   The first gold-rush in the area occurred in 1856 and followed the discovery of payable gold at Lightbands Gully, south of Collingwood. The miners first focused on the alluvial deposits but soon shifted attention to lode potential. The total historical gold production for the area may be over 400 000 oz (NZ$250 - NZ$295.6 M at 1993 prices).   In addition to gold, a wide range of other minerals have been reported from the area including molybdenum, copper, nickel, zinc, silver, bismuth, stibnite, lead and antimony. The Onekaka iron-ore deposits have produced small tonnages of ochre and iron-ore at various times. Tungsten, platinoids and other metals have been. given only minor attention. The diverse geology of the Northwest Nelson has resulted in the occurrence of many industrial minerals which have been exploited in generally small-scale operations. Aggregate, chrysotile asbestos, clay, dolomite, marble, limestone, dimension stone, rip-rap, talc-magnesite and wollastonite have all been produced.

The proposed classification scheme is based on two primary parameters, one for petrographic composition and the other for rank, both being determined with microscopic techniques. The scheme has been applied to a wide range of Australian coals and found to provide a useful means of relating their inherent properties to properties such as volatile-matter yield, crucible swelling number, and calorific value, which will determine how these coals might be used commercially.

The Bosphorus Rail Tunnel Project, located in Istanbul, Turkey, aims to provide a Euro-Asian rail link, via an immersed tube tunnel crossing the Bosphorus Strait, along which will run all commuter, freight and intercity passenger trains of Turkish State Railways (TCDD), as well as the future extension to the European rail network. The total length of upgrading and new railway construction will be approximately 76 km. The main structures include the immersed tube tunnel; mechanised shield tunnels; new Austrian tunnelling method (NATM) tunnels; cut-and-cover, at-grade and retained-cut/fill structures; and some service structures. This paper discusses Phase 1 implementation of the project, one of the major transportation infrastructure projects in the world today, whose varied structures present stimulating engineering and construction challenges.

In preparing a paper such as this it was thought that the Newstan Colliery Company Ltd., being comparatively new, would need some introduction to mining people in general.The Newstan Company was formed by the Joint Coal Board in December, 1948 during a period of acute coal shortages. The Company took over the holdings of what were known as the Olstan and Northumberland Collieries, situated at Fassifern, alongside Lake Macquarie and adjacent to the Great Northern Railway, within easy rail access of Sydney and Newcastle, as shown on the locality plan (Fig. 1).The Company was developed in order to produce steaming coal for the power house trade and has continued its activities in the steaming coal trade since its inception. The Olstan and Northumberland collieries were together producing some 300 tons per day when the Company was formed, and it was from this foundation that the colliery was built. The planned development of the Company has been along the lines of producing coal by modern, highly mechanised methods, together with the preparation of theproduct for the consumer, to the highest degree possible consistent with up to date methods.In the comparatively short time of 5t years the mine has developed from a small hand-won coal unit to a high capacity modern mine, one of Australia's largest producers, with an output capacity as high as 3,000 tons per shift.

Coal cleat and faulting influence failure, gas release, and choice of preferred mining directions, locations, and sequences. Unfortunately soil and younger rock cover restrict direct mapping of these structures ahead of mining operations. Aerial photographs of cover contain indirect indications of concealed structures in arrays of linear photostructures. These arrays are commonly too complex for interpretation by simple visual inspection.Analytical techniques applicable to complex arrays are illustrated for a covered part of the Galilee Coal Basin, Queensland. These techniques are: optical determination of sets in arrays of photostructures; correlation of these sets with sub-surface structures; filtering of m-rays for particular sets; detection of anomalies associated with concealed structures in the density distributions of particular sets; fitting filtered arrays to trajectories; correlation of trajectories with the regional directional variations of concealed structures; contouring of ratios of sets to discriminate anomalies associated with concealed fractures and variations in the total and bed thicknesses of cover; kinematic and dynamic inference on the basis of fracture-trace angular and spatial relationships.

An optical computing system was used to determine spacings and frequencies in geological fabrics and engineering joint fabrics.Three-dimensional arrays of joints were plotted on an equal-area net. Directions in which true spacings are seen were determined from these plots. Photographs taken along these directions were used for optical computing.

This is what I term ... the graveyard end of any Conference. It's almost over. Those of you remaining are either all talked out or past the information overload stage. And some of the sensible? ones have left for more exciting field trips, or gone back to their work-site where they earn their daily crust, or headed off South to another Conference of interest to the Energy sector that is being held currently in Christchurch. But that's OK. I have a thick skin! And neither am I particularly Politically Correct! I am not a miner: I am not involved in the mining industry in a hands on way at all. I am not even an academic. I am not even too sure why I am here ... apart from the fact that I agreed to come! At various times in my life I have been a D istrict Councillor, Chairman of a Regional Council and even an MP. I am a supporter of responsible mining.  All of what I have to say is my own point of view rather than that of either the Coal Producers' Federation or the mining industry. That is not to say that we are often in agreement, but I thought I would clear that point right at the outset. And some of what I will talk about will not strictly be to the topic - it's hardly mind-bending riveting stuff. Well, is it? But obviously because you are still here you have some interest in the topic.

Northern Iron Ltd (NIL) is an Australian listed company that recently brought the historic Sydvaranger open pit Magnetite Mine (the Project) in Northern Norway successfully back into production. NIL made the decision to operate the Project on an owner mining basis, due to limited large scale mining expertise amongst Norwegian mining contractors, a long mine life, a limited range in planned mining rate and to minimise costs. As a new mine operator in a country where labour practices are strictly regulated, there was the desire to reduce the risk associated employing and managing skilled personnel. This was achieved by coupling the purchase of the required mining equipment from the original equipment manufacturer's (OEM) regional dealers with OEM supported Maintenance and Repair Contracts (MARC). This paper examines the process that was followed to implement an owner mining operation in a short time frame; approximately 12 months from the initial requests for quotation to actual delivery of mining equipment to site, and some of the challenges faced. By following a formal and well-tested process, not only was the implementation achieved in the set time frame, but significant value was added through the cost savings achieved in the equipment purchase price and MARC rates that were negotiated through this process.

Soon after the Rosebery concentrator commenced operations in 1936, an investigation was begun in an attempt to discover a substitute for cyanide in lead flotation. Cyanide is an excellent depressant for zinc and iron, but it also powerfully depresses the copper, silver and gold bearing minerals present in Rosebery ore, thus allowing them to pass through to the zinc concentrate or final residue where they are of little or no value.The investigation was not entirely successful, but it did indicate that sodium bisulphite or sodium sulphite could be used as a depressant for zinc without depressing the copper, silver and gold bearing minerals. The sulphites were, however, much inferior to cyanide as apyrite depressant.At about this time, I. W. Wark, using the captive bubble technique, had shown that, at the concentrations normally used, sodium aerofloat is not a promoter for pyrite or galena in alkaline solutions (see his book "Principles of Flotation", p. 188). Some preliminary tests on the production of a copper concentrate from Rosebery ore were therefore carried out using sodium sulphite as depressant and sodium aerofloat as promoter.The results of this work were promising but, since Rosebery ore usually carries only about 0·5% copper, there did not seem to be much incentive to carry the work further. The selection of Sydney and Port Kembla for the First Ordinary Meeting of the Institute for 1938 was, no doubt, a recognition of the celebrations marking the 150th Anniversary of the first settlement of this country. In selecting a theme for my Presidential Address, I propose to depart from the precedents of my distinguished predecessors, as I feel that this year of celebration is the natural year for a brief review of the history and progress of the Institute.In July, 1892, the Amalgamated Mining Managers' Association of Australasia held its Annual Conference in Ballarat, Victoria, when Mr. Uriah Dudley, who attended as a delegate from Broken Hill, brought forward the advisability of the formation of an Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Mr. Dudley was authorised to take such action as he thought fit, and the result was the formation of a Provisional Committee in Broken Hill of men who were mostly members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. Percolation irrigation of low-grade quartz feldspar porphyry ore with pH 2.0 H2SO4 at 510 litres/m2/day using particle sizes 1.7 - 6.7 mm in columns measuring 5 cm dia × 126 cm long was used to study effects of interrupted irrigation ('rest' periods) on metal ion release and leaching bacteria. Copper tenors increased approximately 16 fold and bacterial iron oxidation activity three fold following a 14 day 'rest'. A linear relationship between copper tenor and bacterial activity demonstrated that this experimental system was effective for quantitative studies of bacterial leaching in ore colums.

Laboratory and field work on the use of wetting agents for suppression of colliery dust is described. Although the results were inconclusive they were not discouraging and further investigation is required. The use of certain wetting agents may constitute a healthhazard.INTRODUCTIONCoal dust presents explosion and health hazards to the coal mining industry. The problem of dust suppression is particularly acute where water alone is unsatisfactory for this purpose. Tin in ores containing 0·025 to 1·5 per cent tin can be determined polarographically by the reduction of the chlorostannite ion at the dropping mercury electrode in 2M hydrochloric acid solution containing 15 per cent ammonium chloride. The tin is separated from interfering elements by distillation as the tetrabromide and collected from the distillate by co-precipitation with aluminium hydroxide. The method can detect 0·01 per cent tin in ore.INTRODUCTIONAn iodimetric method, suitable for routine analysis of titrating tin in concentrations down to 1 per cent, has been available for some years (Low, Weinig, and Schoder, 1939).As concentrations fall below 1 per cent tin, there is increasing difficulty in obtaining a distinct end point due to large amounts of iron and silica normally present after fusion of the ore. Since concentrations of tin down to 0·02 per cent are significant in ore dressing products it was necessary to examine methods to determine such low concentrations, and to adapt these to tin ores containing a wide variety of other minerals.EXPERIMENTALDigestion and separationCassiterite, the principal tin mineral, is refractory but readily attacked by a sodium peroxide flux to yield soluble sodium stannate. Nowadays mining projects are seeking new versions of evaluation that are based on the flexibility in the project. Real option valuation (ROV) is one of the modern evaluation methods that provides a tool to adapt and revise mining projects under uncertainty and future variable movements. Most evaluation approaches simply assume that some variables are fixed, such as production rate, variable cost, fixed cost and lifetime of project. The first section of this paper reviews a comprehensive study of ROV in mining projects. The paper then introduces a new model that solves problems where previous methods lacked. The new method endeavours to find maximum mining project value by adding total cost as a function of production rate into ROV. The second section has been applied to a new model on the Century zinc mine in north-west Queensland, thus illustrating the future overview of that mine. The new version of ROV gave a significant positive value for the Century Mine, when the closure and reopening options where available throughout the life of the mine. Consequently, the new method evaluates real options to add value to mining projects, maximising projectÆs value, estimating cost function, optimising production rates and offers opportunities in projects to amplify gains or to mitigate losses.
