The Western Mining Corporation mining lease on the Bendigo Goldfield measures 5krri x 18km with more than 20 anticlinal folds parallelling th long north-south boundaries. Numerous closely spaced shafts and extensive underground workings on the reef lines along the folds flooded with groundwater following the progressive abandonment of the field. Preliminary water sampling and assessment demonstrated that a major dewatering programme and acceptable disposal methods were necessary to dewater interconnected old workings in areas of interest prior to any underground work taking place. A field wide geohydolic investigation was undertaken to establish geohydraulic parameters, groundwater recharge rates and water qualities. Data from the field investigation together with estimates of the volume geometry of the submerged workings as obtained from old mine plans, production history, and limited pump testing results were used with an appropriate analytical model to obtain estimates of water discharge rates required to reach various dewatering targets. Water disposal options were limited by relatively high salinities, arsenic levels, contained hydrogen sulphide, and the mine locations within the urban areas surrounding Bendigo. Direct disposal to the surface drainage system could not be considered, treatment to acceptable discharge standards was not economically feasible, and it was necessary to adopt a strategy of collection, containment, and evaporation.

Maintaining catch berm capacity in open pit mines through controlled blasting prevents production delays associated with managing risks associated with wall instability. A method has been developed to quantify the drill hole deviation of presplit holes at Century Mine. Different controlled blasting techniques are used to control wall quality and decrease the risk. The performance of presplit drilling, in terms of deviation from design has been investigated. A methodology has been developed to quantify the drill hole deviation in three dimensions. This methodology was converted into a series of algorithms capable of handling an extensive range of data. The methodology was applied to a case study at Century Mine to evaluate the performance of drilling on two presplit blasts. Overall, 67 drill holes were investigated in the case study. The drill hole deviation was quantified in terms of three parameters: skewness, linearity and drill hole deviation parameter. Methods for quantifying each parameter were developed. Skewness, a measure of the amount of curvature and linearity, was defined as the measure of the consistency of the gradient of the drill hole. Drill hole deviation parameter is defined as the average measured deviation of the surveyed drill hole position from the design position. Acceptable drill hole deviation tolerances for each of the defined parameters were developed by analysing drill hole deviation parameters with respect to implications to catch berm capacity. Verification of the methodology was confirmed through the comparing of the completed drill hole deviation results using both visual inspection and cross analysis for each of the three methods. Holes with an R squared value of less than 0.97 for skewed deviation were classified as having skewed deviation, while holes with a difference in gradient of 3.5 were classified as having linear deviation. The results show that 76 per cent of the drill holes had deviation. Of this, 19 per cent were skewed, 57 per cent had linearity and 12 per cent contained both skewed and linearity deviation.

The pilot scale testing of Australian coals for their NO, emissions was carried out at the ACTC to investigate the influence of coal properties, furnace conditions and different NO,, control strategies on NO,, emissions. The NOx emissions for the Australian coals tested were found to vary over a wide range and primarily depended on combustion temperature and excess oxygen conditions. These coals did not exhibit any fundamental difference in NOx levels to other world coals. Under similar combustion conditions, the conversion of coal nitrogen to NO. was found to be best correlated with coal rank parameter, R, max per centage. The use of staged combustion as a control strategy was shown to reduce their NOx levels by 56 - 77 per cent.

The 372 MW Ulu Jelai Hydroelectric Project is a peaking power scheme located in the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia. The main features of the project include an 84 m high roller compacted concrete dam; two weirs which divert flows from adjacent catchments via transfer tunnels into the main reservoir; an underground power waterway; and an underground power station complex comprising three large caverns with connecting tunnels approximately 240 m below surface level. The project includes approximately 25 km of tunnels excavated in fresh granite rock mass with some distinct shear zones of weaker material. The majority of the tunnels are being excavated using drill and blast, with the two transfer tunnels being excavated with a tunnel boring machine (TBM).This paper focuses on the design and construction of the Telanok underground power station complex and also some aspects of the design for the headrace tunnel. Fibre reinforced shotcrete has long been accepted as temporary ground support in both mining and civil tunnel linings. Greater knowledge and understanding of shotcrete as an engineering material and advances in its quality have enabled designers to eliminate the requirement of a second pass lining. The initial shotcrete can be used as the permanent tunnel lining or be incorporated into the final lining design, rather than ignored and considered as sacrificial.For the initial shotcrete lining to become a suitable permanent tunnel lining it must be able to establish and maintain stability over time when subjected to all possible loads. To ensure this, best engineering practices are required during the design phase of the project to analyse; ground conditions including rock mass properties, ground and ground water quality, rock mass loadings, excavation sequencing, and construction methodologies.The increased durability of steel fibre reinforced shotcrete over traditional tunnel support, in the right ground conditions, makes it possible to achieve a serviceability design life of greater than 100 years (as required in most infrastructure projects). By specifying a good quality shotcrete mix and ensuring adequate quality control for batching, fibre dosing, preproduction testing, excavation sequencing, and application control, it is possible to eliminate the requirement of a secondary lining. The properties of a suitable permanent lining must be well established using suffi cient preproduction testing in combination with post application monitoring.A major benefit of steel fibre reinforced shotcrete in ground support applications is the removal of any requirement for workers to work under unsupported ground. Its use can also significantly reduce, if not eliminate, the manual handling associated with placing traditional reinforcement such as lattice girders and mesh. Both of these benefi ts are significant with the ever increasing focus on health and safety.This paper highlights factors that must be considered in the design and specifications to enable an initial shotcrete tunnel lining to become the permanent shotcrete tunnel lining.

Rosebery mine has had over 100 years of mining activity. The reserve has remained static for the last eight years with an expected mine life of six years. A move to rectify this was made in 1994 with the birth of the Deep Exploration Project (DEP). $45 M was committed to drill 100 km of underground exploration diamond drilling and develop 5.5 kin of decline aiming to add 9.5 Mt to the reserves and minimise lead time for development of P and K lenses discovered in the early-1990s. In 1996 this aim was expanded with the objective to build the resource base to 20 Mt by June 2000 allowing the mill to operate at 1.0 Mtpa (0.9 Mt from underground). Preliminary results of the project to-date are outlined and exploration diamond drilling techniques and strategies are described.

Teleseismic travel time residuals measured on 600-1000 km seismic arrays across the Rio Grande and East African rifts provide evidence for upper mantle low velocity zones beneath each rift of velocity contrast 6%-8%. Refraction studies show thinning of the crust below the rift axes. Regional uplift which extends hundreds of km either side of the axes, is isostatically compensated by negative density contrast at depth. Since the refraction argues against compensation by thickened crust, compensation in the upper mantle low velocity zones is suggested. Temperature effects alone can not explain the reduced velocities. Generation of a few percent of partial melt is the most probable source of the reduction. A passive extensional mechanism is investigated for the Rio Grande rift in which hot asthenosphere intrudes the lithosphere raising its temperature and generating moderate melting. It requires less than 1% extension to explain the melting but a prodigious 26% to raise the temperature from a pre-rifting continental geotherm to the solidus. Geological estimates find that extension is less than 10% over the uplift zone. Such a mechanism is possible only if the prerifting lower lithosphere geotherm lies closer to the solidus than that of stable continent. This is supported by the observed high heat flow in the Rio Grande rift uplift region which, given the long time constant for thermal diffusion, reflects elevated temperatures at depth well in advance of the onset of rifting.

The spatial modelling of geometallurgical domains is an important step in the characterisation of an ore deposit allowing for the quantification of various rock types, their differing rock properties and the overall value of a project. The traditional approach to modelling such features is through the use of deterministic models, where a single estimate of the extents and structure of the ore deposit is mapped out by geologists based on available data and their interpretation of the geological processes. Any uncertainty in the layout of different domains is not accounted for and heterogeneities of chemical and physical properties of the orebody are likely underestimated. Spatial machine learning techniques can be used to derive geometallurgical categories, or classes, from multiscale, multiresolution and high dimensional measured rock properties. Subsequently, geostatistical simulations of these classes can be applied to obtain multiple equiprobable realisations that define the layout of the geometallurgical classes at unknown locations between boreholes, or domains. In-turn these realisations can be used quantify the uncertainties in the location of boundaries between different domains. The development of a workflow for defining geometallurgical domains and later geostatistically simulating them across the Orebody H; a complex stratabound Bedded Iron Ore deposit located in Western Australia’s Pilbara region is demonstrated. This could be used to identify zones of high uncertainty where collection of additional data might help mitigate or minimise risks and in turn improve forecast production performances.

This paper presents an empirical design methodology that is based on successful US roof support systems using both primary and secondary support in coal mining entries and intersections. The recent nationwide dramatic reduction of roof fall rates, especially in areas with weaker roof, can be directly correlated to the effectiveness of the roof support systems. A large database of roof fall histories at several mines is used to define the approximate boundaries of three modes of roof support with respect to roof strength as classified by the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) and in situ vertical stress as indicated by the depth of cover. These roof support classifications are: • Suspension, where roof bolts mainly provide skin control for strong roof. • Beam building or reinforcement, where a roof of moderate strength can be supported by roof bolts only. • Supplemental (secondary) support, where the primary support by roof bolts may be augmented by several secondary support systems, eg cable bolts, trusses, additional roof bolts or standing supports. The Primary Support Rating index (PSUP) captures the capacity of the primary roof bolt system as a function of the actually implemented roof control plan, ie roof bolt length, roof bolt density, and roof bolt capacity, while it does not consider the type of bolt. The actual PSUP value is compared against a suggested PSUP value derived from statistical analysis of US case histories. Where secondary support is indicated, the expected rock load determines the necessary capacity of the secondary support system. A new (free) software package, Analysis of Mine Roof Support (AMRS), implements the design methodology and also allows comparison with other international indices such as the Reinforcement Density Index (RDI), the PRSUP, etc.

The discovery and delineation of significant mineralisation in the Eliwana region continues Fortescue Metals Group’s strong exploration success. In the decade after the first hole was drilled into Christmas Creek in mid-2004 a total of over 11 Bt of hematite-goethite mineralisation have been delineated supporting the raising of $13 B, construction of five mines, 620 km of rail and a five-berth port. As of June 2014, Fortescue was shipping at the rate of 155 Mt/a. The area including the Eliwana and Flying Fish deposits is one of a number of future growth opportunities that Fortescue is currently evaluating.The Eliwana and Flying Fish deposits occur on the south dipping limb of the Brockman Syncline/Jeerinah Anticline. The Eliwana group of deposits are hosted by the Brockman Iron Formation with the Flying Fish/Broadway group hosted by the Marra Mamba Iron Formation.Structurally the area is dominated by moderate southerly dips of the regional dome and keel style folding. The regional limb is locally cross-cut at a small angle by asymmetric north facing Ophthalmian folds trending 110°. These fold sets, in part, preferentially host subsequent supergene mineralisation. Faulting is only locally apparent.Early phases of exploration commenced in 2006, with mapping of Flying Fish and reconnaissance drilling in 2007. However, due to the concurrent discovery (Clarke et al, 2009) and subsequent fast tracked development of Solomon channel iron deposit and Firetail bedded iron deposit (Simpson et al, 2011) priority was placed on developing Solomon due to its relative proximity to existing Fortescue infrastructure. Staged follow-up drilling of both Marra Mamba and Brockman targets at Eliwana was progressively undertaken from 2008 onward.As of 20 May 2014 a total of 1494 reverse circulation (RC) holes for 54 248 m and 13 diamond holes had been completed, resulting in the delineation of a Mineral Resource of 740 Mt. The challenges facing the iron and steel industry on a global scale include depletion of resources, excessive energy consumption and CO2 emissions. The demand for iron products in Zimbabwe is increasing due to massive infrastructural development like the expansion and improvement of mines, transportation systems and water reticulation systems. In Zimbabwe, cast iron is mainly produced from recycling scrap metals. However, there is currently a shortage of scrap, which has resulted in the vandalism of state-owned properties such as bus terminals and railway wagons and lines. Nevertheless, Zimbabwe is rich in limonite ores, which are idle, and it is the aim of this research that this ore be effectively used to produce feed for the blast furnace. The Blast furnace is still the dominant route for producing cast iron where sintering and coking processes are the main routes for preparing the Blast furnace feed. Sintering limonite ore fines produce a product of poor grade because of the high value of loss on ignition that has a negative impact on Blast furnace efficiency. Furthermore, the sinter plant and the coke making plant are a source of huge environmental pollutants. Since low-grade Zimbabwean coal fines are also available in abundance, they were used in the preparation of the composite materials ensuring maximum utilisation of this resource. Results showed that the limonite ore-carbon composite pellets sample with the binary basicity ratio (CaO/SiO2) of about 0.27 and coal addition of 2.5 wt per cent achieved above the minimum physical quality requirements for pellet of drop number of at least 4, a dry compression strength greater than 2.2 kg/pellet and an indurated compression strength greater than 250 kg/pellet. Limestone was used as the binder avoiding the addition of more impurities from bentonite since the limonite ore has a high SiO2 content of about 8.78 wt per cent.

The Red October Gold Mine, owned by Saracen Gold Mines Pty Ltd, is located approximately 80 km south of Laverton, Western Australia. It is considered to be of a similar nature to many of the Archaean granite-greenstone deposits in the Laverton Tectonic Zone, and presents as an intriguing and relatively young deposit in terms of developed structural and genetic models. Regional deformation events have been proposed for the area, and are relatively well accepted. The most important of these deformation events in the region were the D4b (WNW–ESE sinistral transpression) and D5 (ENE–WSW dextral transpression) which have been attributed to the main Au mineralising phases. At the local scale there appears to have been a rotation of the regional stress field to provide the optimum orientation of maximum principal stress for sinistral movement on the main shear zone.Fully coupled 3D finite element analysis (FEA) was used to simulate the geomechanical response of the system based on structural observations. The geomechanical modelling resulted in highlighting anomalous patterns of stress and strain and subsequent fluid flow as a result of the two main deformation events. The D4 simulation provided a good correlation with the known distribution of subsidiary structures on the main shear zone, and furthermore provided several geomechanical targets that suggested locations of additional subsidiary structures. The D5 simulation provided a great insight into the response of the main shear zone and known subsidiary structures also highlighting additional targets indicating potential for further mineralisation. These targets have since been followed up with a 732 m deep surface reverse circulation (RC) drill hole, resulting in the discovery of two high-grade shoots, with follow up testing currently planned for mid-2014.CITATION:McLellan, J G, Conn, J, Howe, D and Gates, K, 2014. Although the mining of metals was well established by the time of the Roman Empire mining skills did not really advance greatly for many centuries. Miners did not have the scientific knowledge to distinguish minerals, to process them, and to obtain the best recovery. Each mine essentially developed its own methods in isolation, most of them dangerous. However, with the beginning of the industrial revolution in the early 18th century there was a rapid increase in mining activity in Central and Western Europe and an accompanying need to educate professionals in the developing fields of science and technology. There was also a need for specialised schools (for example, Schools of Mines) to accomplish this since the universities of the time, formed as early as the first half of the 12th century, were cloistered institutions, focused on the study of classics, theology and law. The earliest attempts at organised technical education were made in 1702 with the establishment of a School of Mines in Frieberg, Germany (Table 1) to service rich copper mines, and in 1747 with the establishment of a School of Mines in Paris. By this time, the industrial revolution was well under way and other Schools rapidly followed, at Clausthal in the Ruhr region of Germany in 1775; in 1777 at Almanden to service the mercury mines of Spain (later transferred to Madrid); in 1780 at St Petersburg, Russia and at Falun, Sweden in 1819. The academic staff for these new institutions were often trained in the original School at Frieberg.

In-pit tailings storage can provide many advantages when compared to typical above-ground tailings storage facilities (TSFs). As regulations become more restrictive and existing mines expand into new pits, the motivation and opportunities for in-pit tailings disposal is increasing.The Langer Heinrich uranium orebody follows a palaeo-river channel and is mined as an open pit operation. The mine pits intersect two main aquifer systems, one at the surface and one at the base of the orebody/pits. The tailings storage methodology is full in-pit disposal in multiple TSFs for the life-of-mine. Continuity of the initial hydrogeological conditions is incorporated in the design by the use of the pervious surround concept and the reinstatement of the lower aquifer (palaeochannel aquifer) at the base of the pit. Containment embankments are required to facilitate the staging of the TSFs development and are constructed using waste rock liberated during the mining of the pits. All of the TSFs are equipped with decant structures and an underdrainage system is included to improve water recovery, enhance consolidation and increase tailings density.This paper presents the design of a unique in-pit tailings storage solution for the Langer Heinrich mine in Namibia owned by Paladin Energy Ltd.CITATION:Hore, C and Luppnow, D, 2015. In order to clarify the gas flow and motion of coke and reaction in the raceway, the mathematical raceway model was developed. This model consists of the equations of momentum and continuity of gas and coke. The simulated results were compared with the results of the cold and hot experimental model. The relationship between the blast volume and the raceway size, the pressure distribution and the velocity distribution of coke are in good agreement with the experimental results. Moreover the equations of reaction and heat conservation were simultaneously calculated with the dynamic equations. Distributions of gas composi- itions and temperature were simulated and found to be in good agreement with the distributions of gas compositions of CO, CO2 on the tuyere level measur- ed in the hot experimental model.

Rock bolts are commonly used to reinforce ground in underground mining and civil tunnel environments. Rock bolts serve two main functions: i) they suspend large, loose blocks of ground, and ii) provide a protective pressure arch to restrain the deformation in an excavated void. Automated and precise tracking of rock bolt positions can assist with the operational success of ground support by reducing the amount of labour required in current manual practices. A point cloud is a large list of x, y and z coordinates in three-dimensional space, that when visualised, show a precise 3D representation of a physical environment. Point cloud data can be collected using accurate LiDAR scanners. These scanners can be mounted on a stationary tripod or on a moving vehicle. A key way point cloud data is used is in the bolt detection project being completed in conjunction with UNSW Sydney, which aims to provide an automated location of underground rock bolts from LiDAR scans. The immediate challenge with identifying rock bolts is that they constitute a very small portion of the data set amounting to approximately 0.01 per cent of some of the collected civil tunnel data. The process of detecting rock bolts from point clouds therefore requires a quick elimination of large background data while still preserving the bolt data. A further challenge is that the geometry of underground environments can often be very complex and non-uniform. To overcome these challenges, a two-step coarse to fine deep learning approach is taken. The first step is a coarse background elimination step aimed at removing as much of the background data as possible. The second step is a finer classification method, which uses deep learning to further segment the bolts from the remaining background. Additionally, a computer vision module is being implemented, which is expected to increase the detection rate by adding another dimension to the training data set.

Narrow reef gold deposits are generally less than 4 m in width and relatively complex geological phenomena. They often display variable geometry, attitude, continuity and internal architecture. Economic grades are mostly restricted to specific structural domain(s) and localised within discrete ore shoots that have a nuggety internal grade distribution. On account of the often extended history of geological events, the specific factors localising gold-rich domains are likely to be unique to a particular mine or even reef. These features lead to a high resource risk and require careful management during both evaluation and mining. The gross form, location and global continuity of gold reefs can generally be determined from surface diamond drilling leading to the definition of Inferred Mineral Resources. It is likely that for the definition of Indicated and Measured Mineral Resources underground development and/or close- spaced diamond drilling will be required. Understanding geometry and continuity permits the resource to be more effectively managed, lowering risk/uncertainty. This in turn will allow for well-informed financial and operational decisions. Most importantly, project expectations and milestones can be set at achievable levels.

The eastern third of Australia contains an unrivalled Phanerozoic rock record generated by the regional interaction of Gondwanaland with the Pacific and by the global effect of the 400 m.y. Pangaea - Panthalassa cycle. Between the latest Proterozoic (600 Ma) breakup of Proto-Pangaea and the mid-Carboniferous coalescence of the dispersed continents in Pangaea, the Lachlan and Thomson Foldbelts accreted to the craton by Mariana-type (backarc basin) and Chilean-type (continental margin) subduction from eastward jumps of the Palaeo- Pacific rim. Further jumps of the rim of the Permian and Mesozoic Pacific, now expanded to Panthalassa, accreted the New England Foldbelt to the craton. An Early Permian rift basin was succeeded by a Late Permian to mid-Triassic foreland basin which extended between the craton and the foldbelt behind the 10000 km Panthalassan rim, from the Bowen Basin of Queensland to South America, and was host to the productive coal measures of eastern Australia, as the succeeding Jurassic and Early Cretaceous foreland and epicratonic basins included the coal measures, hydrocarbon reservoirs, and aquifers of the Great Artesian Basin. The magmatic arc on the Australian margin ended after the mid-Cretaceous uplift along the Queensland coast that initiated southwestward drainage from the high Pacific rim. The Chilean-type subduction that had prevailed since the Devonian was superseded shortly afterwards by Mariana-type subduction with the successive generation of the back-arc basins of the Tasman Sea, Coral Sea, and other southwest Pacific basins by the migration of the island arc to its present position 2500 km eastward of Australia.

Serious exploration for carbonate-hosted lead/zinc deposits in the Pillara district commenced in 1971 when Trend Exploration acquired exploration tenements covering stream sediment anomalies in the Limestone Billy Hills area. Shell Minerals managed the project from 1974 to 1976, and BHP Minerals Limited assumed management during 1976. Carbonate-hosted 'Mississippi-Valley- type' Pb-Zn deposits most commonly occur in Palaeozoic shallow marine carbonate complexes. At Pillara upper Devonian (Givetian/Frasnian) reef complexes are preserved on the flanks of Precambrian basement 'highs'. Within platform and atoll facies limestones sphalerite-galena- marcasite-calcite mineralisation occurs as disseminations, veins and breccia matrix, mostly associated with fractures and fault zones. Early exploration concentrated on detailed surface geochemistry and IP geophysical surveys, with geological mapping and shallow target percussion and diamond drilling. Results were discouraging and did not indicate potential for a shallow base metal resource. During 1976-77 BHP adopted a grid diamond drilling exploration technique and commenced testing an area of approximately 50 sq. km, initially using an 800 m square grid. In 1978 high grade mineralisation was intersected in an area subsequently named Blendevale. This was in the seventh diamond drill hole in the 800 m grid drilling programme, and to date more than 400 holes have been cored in the Pillara area. Detailed drilling at Blendevale has defined a number of mineralised breccia zones within an area of 2.4 km x 0.5 km, at depths of 100 m to 600 m below surface. The breccia bodies are associated with a series of north-south trending normal fault zones, forming a graben structure.
