Continuous improvement in environmental management assists in the achievement of sustainability goals for the mining and processing of minerals. The use of regular internal environmental audits (scored or unscored) which form an integral component of an Environmental Management System (EMS), provide demonstrable evidence of this improvement. The audits described in this paper involve working with site personnel to develop and implement major improvement projects, providing advice on how to improve environmental practices and facilities, and disseminating innovative ideas and practices across the site and to other operations within the same group. Essentially the lead auditor assumes the role of a æskills coachÆ as opposed to a æpolicemanÆ, which is quite often the case for many audits. The audit process has been developed from involvement with a number of major coal mines in the Hunter Valley, where regular internal environmental audits have been undertaken every two to three months, over periods varying from 18 months to five years and more recently, with a metalliferous mine in the Northern Territory. Examples of the benefits of improved environmental performance (driven by the audit process) to sustainable development are provided. The auditing process as described is applicable to metalliferous mines, the processing of mineral ores, coal mines, coal handling and preparation plants, quarries, and oil and gas projects.

The key technical theme of ‘orebody knowledge’ has been applied by Rio Tinto in the Pilbara iron ore precinct from 1966, when operations first started there. It forms the basis of present day application, as well as planning for the future.This paper will review how the early towns and mines commenced and how they formed the basis of Rio Tinto’s early operations, on which the Pilbara precinct has been based. A profile of the last decade of Pilbara growth will be highlighted, together with the current integrated network of mines, rail and ports and the next generation of expansions.The paper will specifically describe the Rio Tinto process of significant resource evaluation, including comprehensive drilling programs and the conversion from resource to reserves. It will also describe the overall mine planning process, both from the strategic view, as well as for short-term mine plans.The ability to innovate in resource development will be discussed. This will include not only the technical dimension of changing cut off grades, use of low-grade ores and managing low-grade stockpiling and beneficiation, but also the broader application of new technology and innovation in the iron ore business.

Sublevel open stoping (S.L.O.S.) was introduced at Rosebery in 1972 in the wider ore blocks below 14 level, largely replacing cut and fill methods which had been in use up till that time. During 1973/74 the method produced 10% of primary stoping tonnes, and by 1981/82 it increased to 65%. Because of the increasing reliance placed on sublevel open stoping for primary stoping production, every effort was made in both planning and operating to: - maximise ore recovery and reduce dilution - increase productivity - reduce costs.

Site-based case studies (including data collected from industrial surveys) and their application in evaluating circuit performance, have a significant role in developing reliable process models. Such models are useful to both plant metallurgists and researchers. Appropriate process models enable the plant metallurgist to assess the impact of different operational parameters on the overall circuit performance. They also provide the researcher with a detailed understanding of process behaviour in response to changes in ore characteristics and process conditions (ie plant throughput, ore competence, ore type). Thus enabling the identification of effective operating factors, and allowing them to be ranked in order of their influence on the process response, which eventually develops into a process control tool in the hands of plant operators.The above approach has been developed and applied at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) separately for both comminution and flotation processes. In recent years, the JKMRC has attempted an integrated approach by developing process models that incorporate the impact of upstream processes on downstream processes. This is not possible using the traditional approach of separate comminution and flotation surveys, so conducting integrated plant surveys is crucial for success in developing integrated process models. This paper summarises industrial experience gained while conducting such an integrated plant survey at Glencore’s Ernest Henry Mining operation near Cloncurry in north Queensland. An appropriate approach should be taken to enable the alignment of different requirements from different processes during the plant survey. The Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) is the largest international geoscience project in the world, and the state-of-the-art drill ship, the JOIDES Resolution, is permanently at sea. Each year there are six scientific cruises (legs) which each last approximately two months. These legs are designed by geoscientists from the nineteen countries that subscribe to ODP. Australia and Canada presently share ODP membership under the banner of the AUSCAN Consortium. The benefits of Australia's involvement in ODP include internationalisation of Australian geoscience, advanced graduate training, and unique scientific investigations of the ocean floors in the Australasian region. In addition, visits to Australian ports by the ODP drill ship, the JOIDES Resolution, contribute up to $2 million per visit to the local economy. Amongst the many other aspects of ten years of scientific drilling, ODP has significantly contributed to our understanding of hydrothermal processes on the seafloor. To date, three hydrothermal sites have been drilled to date by the ODP, Snakepit (MAR), Middle Valley (Juan de Fuca Ridge) and TAG (MAR). Two more hydrothermal sites are scheduled for 1996.

The flotation mechanism plays a key role in the flotation process. It is used to provide the contact between solid particles and bubbles and also the energy for these particles and bubbles to attach. The mechanism must therefore provide sufficient mixing to keep the solids in suspension so that they can be transported into the froth and recovered to the concentrate. The design of the mechanism is critical and over the past decade Outotec has developed and optimised a new mechanism design to improve metallurgical and energy performance. The FloatForce® mechanism consists of a rotor and stator arrangement and has been specifically designed to provide sustained mixing at higher air flows and lower power inputs.Over 500 FloatForce® mechanisms have been installed in existing and new operations. This paper outlines the technological aspects of the FloatForce® mechanism and provides metallurgical, operational and energy performance results from a number of flotation circuits in which these have been installed.

Copper-gold-pyrite ore types with an elevated pyrite head grade utilise a sequential flotation circuit to recover initially a copper-gold concentrate with a pyrite-gold concentrate being produced from the tailing of the initial circuit.A simpler flotation circuit with lower operating and capital costs for treatment of such copper-gold-pyrite ores with an elevated pyrite head assay was sought in the described work. After characterising the ore, the objective was to apply bulk rougher flotation of both the copper minerals and pyrite for the copper-gold-pyrite ore at natural pH. Hence, no lime or other pyrite depressants were required in bulk roughing. The bulk rougher concentrate was upgraded in a cleaner circuit to reject non-sulfide gangue and then the resulting sulfide concentrate was separated by depressing the pyrite to produce two products (copper and pyrite concentrates, both having significant gold assays). A standard test with a sequential circuit was applied to the same ore for comparison.The chalcopyrite and pyrite losses in the tailing from the rougher circuit were the same for both bulk and sequential roughing (less than six per cent). In cleaning (bulk circuit), the effective pH for pyrite depression was 11.8–11.9; copper recovery was 70–75 per cent (grade of 15–20 per cent copper) and the sulfur recovery (pyrite product) was 80–85 per cent (grade of 34–36 per cent sulfur).These results approached those for the sequential circuit where copper recovery was 80–85 per cent (grade of 15–20 per cent copper) and the sulfur recovery (pyrite product) was 83 per cent (grade of 38 per cent sulfur).The observed effects of feed sizing on the liberation of minerals in the rougher feed are discussed. Options for improving the bulk circuit results are also considered. Australia's first offshsore well was spudded in on 27th December 1964 and resulted in the discovery of the Barracouta gas field. Further exploratory drilling led to the discovery of the Marlin gas field in December 1965, the Kingfish oil field in April 1967 and the Hblibut oil field in June. 1967. In September 1968, a small oil reservoir was found in a sand below the main Barracouta'gas reservoir. The Snapper gas field was discovered in May, 1968 Information on exploration activities associated with the discovery of oil and gas in the Bass Strait area may be found in the paper, "Exploration in the Gippsland, Bass and Otway Basins, Australia" by B. M. Hopkins. _ Development of the commercial fields is being undertaken on an equal participation basis by Hematite Petroleum Pty. Ltd. and Esso Exploration and Production Australia Inc. Esso Standard Oil (Australia) Ltd. is responsible for the design, construction and operation of the production facilities.

Increasing bed depth is one of the main options sinter plants consider to increase production, since it is an incremental improvement and less expensive compared with a new plant. To maximise the benefits of increased bed depth, correct blend design and plant operation is critical. This paper discusses test work conducted to show the effects of ore type and bed depth on sintering performance and the adjustments required in both fuel rate and lime addition depending on ore type. The differences in sinter plug macro and microstructure were also examined to show the effect of bed depth on ore assimilation and matrix formation. Finally, the benefits of blending ores to achieve the best sintering performance as bed depth increases is discussed.

An inrush of water or mud into an underground mine, or sudden subsidence above mining voids represent low probability but high impact risks in underground mining. About two such incidents involving multiple fatalities or loss of production are reported each year worldwide. On average, Australia experiences one such incident every three to four years. This paper reports the development of a Standard that is intended to eliminate fatalities due to inrushes and subsidence.

Slag from the smelting of lead can contain up to 20 per cent zinc as an oxide. An understanding of the lead smelting process and of the subsequent fuming process for the recovery of zinc is enhanced by a knowledge of the activity coefficient behaviour of zinc oxide in smelting slags. The literature presents a wide range of contradictory values. This paper critically reviews the published data and outlines new measurements being made by the authors. A consistent set of zinc oxide activity coefficient data is presented for liquid slags within the ZnO-'FeO'-CaO-A1203-SiO2 system, through a combination of present and previous measurements.

"Predicting how coal seams will be beneficiated through the coal handling processing plant (CHPP) has long been challenging within BHP Coal. Various coal seams from different areas are mined and stockpiled separately, often depending upon a deleterious coal quality parameter; high/low trace elements for example. These stockpiles are then fed in different ratios into the CHPP to produce the desired product/s. In understanding the washability characteristics of the feed source, mine geologists and process engineers work together to improve the beneficiation of different coal materials through the CHPP.For the majority of the BHP Coal deposits, the washability data is available for the coal seams across the deposits. However, no previous standardised modelling and prediction technique existed that could ensure the correct information was available for forecasting and refining CHPP processes. This paper will discuss the steps undertaken to implement a geometallurgical prediction tool that simplified and streamlined the washability modelling and yield estimation process. The value realised to the BHP Coal assets resulting from this process was: improved compliance to plan increased throughput increased CHPP recovery through improved efficiencies and increased revenues.CITATION:Handley, P J, 2017. A tunnel operations analyser is a new high technol- ogy instrument for use in underground work. By remotely sensing the acoustic emissions from operating machines and processes in a tunnel or shaft and by applying sophis- ticated computer processing to them individual process cycles and other detailed information about the operating processes can be collected. Detailed analyses and dissec- tions of the work in progress can be made and a variety of action oriented management reports produced. The pro- cess is fully automatic. Results of applying this device to two full scale tunnel projects are presented. The hardware and software that comprise the instrument are discussed in detail. Processes by which this device can be used to sub- stantially reduce tunnel costs are presented. It is concluded that this type of technology has great potential.

The Department of Mapping and Surveying (DMS), the Australian Key Centre in Land Information Studies (AKCLIS), the Department of Industry Development (DID) and the State Government Computer Centre (SGCC) are testing a regional information network in northern Queensland. Several study sites have been chosen by different groups of participants. The members of each common-interest group share their data for the site. They can also access datasets supplied by other organisations that are not directly involved in the particular study being undertaken. The participants include state government departments, local authorities, fed- eral organisations and the private sector. The participants communicate with computer systems in Brisbane via Q-Net. Q-Net is a pilot State government tele- communications network, established by the Department of Industry Development. Q-Net uses the communications sat- ellite AUSSAT 1 as the primary instrument of data transfer. The Q-Net network is a star system, with a Master Earth Station in Brisbane acting as a hub for radial earth stations, located throughout Queensland.

This paper describes the results of the field application tests at Miike Colliery on the integrated automatization of the longwall mining system for medium thick coal seam. The purpose of the research is to develop an automatic longwall mining system which can be controlled accurately from outside of the face, and the ultimate goal is an eliminate of men from the face. Presently, the field test is being conducted in Yotsuyama mine following to a success in the performance test on surface. Remote Batch Control System for shield supports has been adapted to operate all supports from the control panel located at the entrance of the face. Remote monitoring and control system of the drum shearer has also been tested. The system makes it possible to operate the shearer either at the main gate or full automatic. Productivity and safety will be substantially improved as those systems enable to eliminate all workers from the face under the severe working conditions with high ground pressure and hot and humid atmosphere due to increasing mining depth. So far, we have been satisfied with the results of the field test and those system will be an effective countermeasure to operate the face with a high risk of rock-burst.

As partition curves are widely employed to characterize screening efficiency which, by definition, should include a time parameter, it is shown, perhaps for the first time, that time is already included in the partition curves and how. Laboratory and plant results are used to show how screening efficiency depends on feed composition, near-mesh and oversize material and screen motion, and how these factors may combine to give an erroneous result that two identically efficient screens are different and two screens of different efficiency are identical. Reasons are given which show why a renewed interest in screening would benefit not only screen engineers and operators but also those concerned in formulating standard specifications of screen analysis methods.

On 15 August 1998 the first section of the PUTRA LRT system was opened to the public as a free service prior to official commencement of revenue service on 1 September 1998. It is a remarkable achievement to open a highly advanced medium capacity urban railway scheme in four years after the outline concept began. Even more remarkable is the implementation of the next stage which is the underground section planned to be operational in mid-1999. The decision to build the first underground railway in any major urban centre is a technical challenge. The PUTRA LRT System can be likened to Hong Kong when the initial MTR system began in the 1970s and Singapore MRT in the 1980s. Prior to the PUTRA railway very little bored tunnelling had been undertaken in Kuala Lumpur. A few shallow sewer tunnels had been built but the main experience of tunnelling in Malaysia had been for water, hydroelectric and road tunnels usually through granite formations. The ground conditions in Kuala Lumpur were known mainly from experience of piled foundations and occasional deep excavations. The suitability and likely difficulties to be experienced during bored tunnelling could only be theoretically predicted. In both Hong Kong and Singapore, government owned corporations were set up to implement the scheme, but in Kuala Lumpur the whole project has been undertaken by a private company PUTRA, a wholly owned subsidiary of Renong Berhad.

"This paper details the events leading up to a slope failure that occurred at Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) and the remediation method executed using rope access specialists.n January 2016, KCGM Fimiston Pit experienced a double bench wall failure where approximately 80 000 t of material fell from the wall that blocked access to a ramp and caused minor damage to equipment.The event was triggered by heavy rainfall and occurred along unfavourable eastward dipping structures that lead into weaker shale/porphyry bands, which in turn left more material on the face. A remediation plan was formulated that would allow for the continuation of open pit operations while a full geotechnical assessment of the failure area could be conducted. This was accomplished by means of rope access specialists who abseiled down the wall and blasted off the remaining overhang using a portable drill rig and prepackaged explosives.This paper provides a brief overview of the KCGM operations, how the instability was identified and monitored, details of the failure event, outcomes of the geotechnical assessment and details on the remediation work.Citation:Graf, C and Sullivan, R, 2016. The cost of power is an important matter to mining companies generally and this thought that the members of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, as well as the engineering and mining professions generally would be interested in any proposal for the reduction of that cost-has led to the presentation of this paper.The writer trusts that the description will be found clear and increase the interest in this exceedingly interesting subject. In the working up of the electrical arrangements touched on in this paper, the author has had the able assistance of hisfriend Mr. F. J. Mars, to whom he offers his hearty thanks. The selection of the best class of power plant for a mine is a very difficult and large problem and it is quite out of place to dogmatise that anyone of the many systems that offer isbetter than another, eg that the all electrical is better than the partly direct steam-driven and partly electrical, or that a gas plant is better than a steam plant.Such a selection is one that calls for very careful and close consideration, in each particular case, of a large number of regulating factors before it is possible to arrive at a proper decision.
