Some crystal chemical properties of several apatites from Brazilian deposits and occurrences were determined; the samples had different origins (igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary). The aim was to establish relationships to their froth flotabilities behaviour. Detailed X-ray diffraction studies were carried out, to determine precisely the unit cell parameters and the degrees of crystallinity of the apatite samples. A thorough chemical analysis of these minerals was also conducted. Microflotation studies were carried out, using sodium oleate and dodecylammonium chloride as collectors. The crystallinity levels were determined for all samples studied, with the establishment of a crystallinity index, which varied from 10.0 to 4.5, on a normalised scale. A marked dependence was observed between this crystallinity sequence and flotability; for both collectors, flotability dropped drastically for crystallinity indices lower than 8.0. Also, the low crystallinity apatites showed a decrease in floatability, for longer conditioning times.

The East China Mesozoic metallogenic province hosts the world’s largest resources of tungsten, tin, molybdenum, antimony and bismuth, with additional important gold, silver, mercury, lead, zinc, copper, uranium and iron deposits. These deposits form several giant metallogenic belts, including South China, Middle-Lower Yangtze River Valley, East Qinling-Dabie, eastern North China Craton and North-east China. Available data demonstrate that these metallogeneic belts are the products of episodic magmatic and related hydrothermal events between ~240 and ~80 Ma. Each magmatic-hydrothermal episode has produced distinct deposit assemblages that can be readily linked to the Mesozoic geodynamic evolution of East China, involving continental collision between the North China Craton and South China Block at 220–200 Ma, oblique subduction of the Izanagi plate under the Eurasian continent at ca 170–135 Ma and post-subduction extension and lithospheric delamination at 130–80 Ma. Metallogeny in north-eastern China is more complicated due to prolonged tectonic evolution related to southward subduction of the Mongolian–Okhotsk plate and westward oblique subduction of the Izanagi plate, and subsequent continental collision and post-collisional processes.CITATION:Mao, J W, Xie, G Q and Cheng, Y B, 2015. Bioleaching of Weathered Saprolite - Heavy Metal Adaptation Mechanisms of Aspergillus foetidus Nickel laterite ores remain important to the future supply of Ni and Co as they contain the bulk of known nickel and cobalt reserves (80 per cent and 90 - 95 per cent respectively). Current commercial extractions of Ni and Co from nickel laterite ores are energy intensive and operational costs are high. Microbial leaching of oxide ores has the potential to offer a much needed step-change in the technology for processing laterite ores. Biological leaching of low-grade nickel laterite is based on a non-traditional leaching of oxide minerals using heterotrophic micro-organisms. The organisms solubilise metals by excreting organic acids; these acids then form complexes with heavy metals. Optimisation of the process in in-situ application, however, has been hampered by the toxicity of the heavy metals that are being leached by the organisms. Our recent study has shown that organisms are able to develop tolerance towards heavy metals by adaptation. This study examined the extracellular metal detoxification mechanisms of A. foetidus in 0.2 per cent (wt/v) to 0.7 per cent (wt/v) of weathered saprolite ore. To support our analysis, FTIR, CHNS and microscopy were used to confirm the participation of specific functional groups in the extracellular detoxification process.

The GPS and information technology industries are now applying considerable development effort to what is being termed machine control and machine information systems, in particular focusing on the industries the of mining construction and agriculture. GPS based systems are demonstrably finding common acceptance and adding commercial value to many machine applications in industry. This has been the first step in the evolution of the information age that is now reforming mining practices. Adding the technologies of wireless data communication, modem computer databases, and networked PC's mining is on the verge of a new era in overall process management. This paper is a general discussion of what the information age means to miners and a general description of new mining operation technologies available to day from the Caterpillar technology alliance.

Scheelite mineralisation east of the main divide in' the Southern Alps of New Zealand was originally identified by Royden Thompson who is now a geologist with the NZ Geological Survey. This mineralisation was brought to the attention of CRA in 1978. Reconnaissance surveys were carried out in 1979 to delineate the extent of the mineralisation. This was undertaken using ultraviolet light examination of the sediments within the major drainages in the Southern Alps. This defined tentative zones of prospective mineralisation. As a result of this, preliminary reconnaissance, exploration licences were applied for -those areas in which indications of scheelite mineralisation were strongest. A total of 1737 km2 of ground was applied for within four exploration licences. These covered the main Southern Alps mountain chain between the Haast/Wanaka highway and the Mt Cook National Park.

The effect of liner wear on SAG mill performance has gained much attention in recent years. It is commonly observed that the three key performance criteria of SAG milling; throughput, power and product size all improve as the liner wears.The increase in throughput is generally ascribed to the increase in the grate apertures and the increase in mill volume due to the wear of these components. Whilst the decrease in product size is attributed to the reduction in lifter height and angle, resulting in more breakage by means of attrition and abrasion.Though it is widely acknowledged that the wearing of liner components such as Lifters, Plates and Grates have a significant impact on mill performance, their individual contribution to changes in mill performance has been unclear, and resultantly lead to questions like; what percentage of the throughput increase can be attributed to the increase in mill volume (plate wear)? and how much can be attributed to the increase in grate aperture (grate wear)?It has been found that through the use of grinding surveys, analysis of production data and JKSimMet it was possible to separate the effects of changing liner profile, increasing mill diameter and increasing grate aperture on the mill performance allowing for the quantification of each.The outlined methodology allows for both troubleshooting of problem liner components which reduce milling efficiency in their wear life as well as providing a basis for a more quantitative approach to liner design and reline scheduling.CITATION:Toor, P, Powell, M, Hilden, M and Weerasekara, N, 2015. With the recent increase in environmental awareness, gold mining companies are fast becoming signatories of the International Cyanide Management Code (ICMI, 2007). The objective of the Code is to improve the management of cyanide used in gold mining and to assist in the protection of human health and the reduction of environmental impacts associated with the use of cyanide. In particular the code specifies the following cyanide concentration limits: 50 ppm WAD cyanide in a tailings storage facility, 0.5 ppm WAD cyanide for effluents, and 0.022 ppm free cyanide or 0.022 ppm WAD cyanide as surrogate in the post mixing zone of river discharge. Weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide refers to those cyanide species liberated at a moderate pH of 4.5, such as HCN(aq) and CN-, and the majority of Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag complexes with low dissociation constants. It is potentially toxic to humans and animals. Gold plants using cyanide should ideally measure WAD cyanide online and destroy WAD cyanide in excess of the applicable limits to ensure compliance with the Code. Mintek has recently developed an online WAD cyanide analyser (WAD Cynoprobe). The WAD cyanide analysis technique is based on the use of a ligand exchange reagent that liberates WAD cyanide bound to metals such as Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag. The ligand exchange reaction is represented by the following chemical equation: Metal(CN)X + yLigand ↔ Metal(Ligand)y + xCN- The plant filtrate is treated with a ligand exchange reagent, to liberate WAD cyanide, before measuring the free cyanide concentration via amperometry. The WAD Cynoprobe measures both free and WAD cyanide concentration. Its fast analysis time, approximately five minutes, makes it suitable for use in the control and optimisation of the cyanide destruction and recovery process. The instrument has proven accurate and reliable in the analysis of synthetic copper, nickel and zinc cyanide solutions made up in the laboratory as well as under industrial gold plant conditions during various trials. The WAD Cynoprobe has gained widespread commercial acceptance and is currently implemented on nine gold plants around the world.

ZINIFEX Century Mine is a zinc, lead and silver concentrate producer. Flotation is the primary method of minerals separation in this circuit. The flotation circuit is quite large with 79 flotation cells. The levels in each of these interconnected cells are controlled at more than 45 level control stations. Due to the multivariable interaction throughout the circuit, good level control was found to be difficult to achieve by just using normal Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control. As a first step in advanced process control, the FloatStar Level Stabiliser, a multivariable controller developed specifically for flotation circuits, has been commissioned at Century mine to solve the level control problems. The first section of this paper therefore discusses and shows the results and improvements obtained by using the FloatStar level stabiliser. The results and benefits of the FloatStar Flow Optimiser are discussed in the second section of this paper.

The past 10 years has seen use of computers become widespread in the mining/exploration industry (including coal, precious and base metals, oil/gas and industrial minerals). This paper will concentrate on the use of computers as a tool to provide technical solutions (including data management, mine planning and operational support) to this industry rather than the use of computers to aid accounting, maintenance and inventory (æcommercialÆ) applications. This paper will review the processes and benefits of the use of computers in mining. We then review the use of technical computing locally here in New Zealand and see what business benefits local users have found from using computers in mining. We have, in research for this paper, spoken with mining software vendors from around the world to find out what is currently the æbest practiceÆ in the industry. The paper will then list what those vendors see as the ultimate improvement on the cards for the future of mining software.

The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences is undertaking a mineral resource assessment study of the Coromandel region, due for completion in July 2000. A key part of the study is the assembly of a geographic information system (GIS), a computerised tool for layering, analysing and presenting spatial information. The GIS is being assembled with ArcInfo/ArcView software and to date includes layers for a digital terrain model, an aeromagnetic map (open file mining company data), a geological map (from the QMAP project), areas of hydrothermal alteration, locations of mineral deposits (GERM database), stream sediment geochemical analyses (REGCHEM database), and a lineament map derived from satellite remote sensing data.

Thermal method of diagnostic as a nondestructive monitoring is based on data logging of infrared radiation from heated surface or from the associated thermal field. Monitoring of gearcases and motors hidden faults, such as, bearing degradation (deep-seated wears and tears, fretting wear, spalling and jamming solids of revolution) is closely related to high variations in temperature. The use of portable thermal imaging devices provides considerable advantages due to: easy remote access to the unit under test even when it is operating; minimum time required to obtain information and an opportunity for a real-time diagnosis of the tested subject's condition.

Batu Hijau is a porphyry copper-gold deposit located onSumbawa Island in the western Banda Arc of Indonesia. The deposit has been evaluated from 54 000 m of drilling in 105 diamond drill holes over a surface area of 1.2 km2 and to a depth of 1000 m below surface (412 m below sea level). A provisional plan is being evaluated to mine 642 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.61% Cu and 0.55 g/t Au (variable cut-off) from an open pit in the higher grade portion of the resource.   The deposit is associated with a calc-alkaline intrusive complex that was emplaced in a thick sequence of andesitic pyroclastic rocks. The oldest and most widespread intrusion is porphyritic to medium-grained, equigranular, quartz hornblende diorite. At Batu Hijau the western diorite contact zone was intruded by two phases of tonalite. The older tonalite is a stock increasing from 200 m diameter at surface to 500 m at sea level. It consists of quartz, plagioclase and hornblende phenocrysts set in a groundmass of similar composition. A younger tonalite intrudes the tonalite stock, quartz and plagioclase phenocrysts are more abundant and it has a finer groundmass than the older tonalite. Brecciation occurs near the older tonalite contacts but there are no breccia pipes or late-stage features such as pebbledykes or postmineralisation intrusive rocks.   Hydrothermal alteration of Old Tonalite and adjacent rocks is centred on the Old Tonalite and is zoned from a core of pervasive potassic alteration grading to an outer propylitic halo. At depth a propylitic assemblage is developed in the low grade core in the Old Tonalite. Phyllic alteration, late stage and mainly fracture controlled, overprints both potassic and inner propylytic zones. Intermediate argillic alteration overprinting is widespread, particularly on the eastern side of the hydrothermal system, where advanced argillic alteration overlies argillic alteration.   Ore grade mineralisation is cylindrical in shape, up to 800 m in diameter, and is centred on the Old Tonalite. A high grade shell (>0.75% Cu) forms an upward tapering cone in and around the Old Tonalite and reaches the surface in the centre of the deposit. Lower in the shell >l g/t Au and >2 g/t Ag accompany >1% Cu. Below 75 m above sea level mineralisation in the Old Tonalite rapidly decreases as a weakly mineralised core develops, but the limb continues to contain mineralisation to at least 412 m below sea level. Fracture and vein-controlled chalcopyrite and bornite are the dominant hypogene copper minerals and are the hosts for most of the gold mineralisation. Gold occurs free and in the lattice of the copper sulphides, and has been observed in quartz.   Weathering, especially where argillic alteration is developed, has produced a strongly leached cap, up to 147 m thick, below which is an irregular copper enriched supergene zone. Where leaching is not developed, such as over the centre of the deposit, an irregular oxide zone and a weakly developed supergene zone may be present.

Thank you for this opportunity to address your conference on 'The role of coal in the New Zealand energy market'. New Zealand's energy market has, in common with much of New Zealand, undergone major change following the market reforms of the Labour Government. As far as the energy sector is concerned this change has been for the better, as it has created for the first time in a very long time a 'true economic market' for energy in New Zealand. This is in marked contrast to the previous regime where: ò Electricity was state operated, subsidised and cross subsidised. ò Oil was imported and subject to a raft of taxes and duties. ò Coal produced by state mines was priced by cabinet committee, based on other energy prices rather than on the costs of production and delivery of the energy product. Today, with the establishment of the SOE's we have a market of competitive supply, where the customer has the choice of energy with prices based on the true costs of production and delivery. This can only be good for the customer as the cost is now based on the real costs of production, not on political whim. So where does coal fit in this brave new world of free market energy supplies? Well, opportunity, they say, knocks but once.

An understanding of the way that solutes are transported in mining or natural environments is essential to the development of sound strategies for managing waste disposal. Research on miscible pollutant movement in unsaturated porous media is carried out both experimentally and numerically. Results of numerical modelling are obtained by solving the groundwater flow equation and the solute transport equation. The finite element method is employed and comparisons between simulation results and experimental data are found in remarkable agreement.

The Reefton Goldfield, both historically and potentially, represents a significant gold producing camp in the Westland province of New Zealand. Some two million ounces of gold have been produced from the Greenland Group host rocks between 1870 and 1951 with the most significant producers being the Blackwater and Globe Progress mines.   Steep terrain, high rainfall, poor outcrop, widespread fluvio-glacial deposits, tertiary cover and sometimes onerous environmental access conditions have proved a challenge to conventional exploration techniques. In addition classic exploration techniques have come up against a desire to reduce exploration cycle time and exploration costs while increasing both quality and quantity of geological information.   The trial, and subsequent implementation, of Wacker sampling has proved a highly successful and effective geochemical tool currently being utilised to target, discover, and define potential economic gold mineralisation in the Reefton Goldfield.

The Ekati Diamond Mine is located on permafrost terrain in CanadaÆs Northwest Territories. The mine rock consists of: diamond-bearing and barren kimberlite; and surrounding waste rock such as granite. The kimberlite occurs in several vertical æpipesÆ that are, or will be, mined using open pits. Early predictions of drainage chemistry at Ekati identified the potential for ARD due to sulfide oxidation from both waste rock and kimberlite. This was surprising for the kimberlite, because neutralisation potentials (NP) are typically hundreds of kg CaCO3 equivalent/t. However, subsequent testwork showed that substantial portions of the NP ædisappearedÆ quickly, apparently due to the unusual non-carbonate mineralogy. In any case, additional predictive work concluded much of the rock was benign and there would be no ARD. Shortly after mining started, ARD appeared from both the waste rock and kimberlite, although a few years passed before the company and its consultants recognised that at least some of the acidic water was ARD. Numerous other processes have been put forward as possible explanations for the remaining acidic drainage, although none have been either confirmed or eliminated. Because: the causes of the ARD and acidity are not known; no causes have been eliminated and more have been added; drainage chemistry was not predicted accurately; and future mining will encounter similar rock. I believe the Ekati Diamond Mine needs high-level assistance to understand current chemistry and to avoid problems with future drainage. Organisations like INAP, MEND3, and universities could provide this assistance.

The process of hydraulic transport through pipelines, worldwide well known for the transport of fine-grain solids is also being used to a greater extent in mining for the handling of primarily coarse-grain solid û water mixtures for the removal of, for instance û coal and waste mixtures after coal winning using hydraulic monitors, tailings for backfilling underground and washer tailings and flotation waste to the dump. A large-scale test unit was taken into service at the Bergbauforschung GmbH (Mining Research Company) in Essen-Kray, GFR, to further improve this technology. The unit was planned and built by Krupp Industrie- und Stahlbau of Duisburg in cooperation with Bergbauforschung GmbH. The paper deals in detail with the demands made on this test unit and the technical results obtained on it and with the planned experimental research work.

OneSteel and BlueScope Steel have been working with the CSIRO to develop sustainable carbon fuels and reductants which are suitable for use in the iron and steel industry. One of the initial focuses of this work has been a process called steel recarburisation which is the addition of carbon to liquid steel to produce particular steel grades. This paper reports on the preliminary work and the recent full scale recarburisation plant trials conducted at the OneSteel Sydney Steel Mill.   Preliminary experimental work involved kilogram scale recarburisation of liquid steel with a range of commercial and prepared charcoal products. This work showed that charcoal dissolves into liquid steel very quickly and that carbon recovery to steel was inversely related to the charcoal volatile content. Initial larger scale work focused on the collection of wood, and preparation of low volatile charcoal which is required for steel recarburisation. Approximately three tonnes of charcoal was prepared at the Corrimal coke ovens of the Illawarra Coke Company. This charcoal was dried, crushed, sized and packaged in a form suitable for addition to 80 tonne liquid steel ladles.   The recarburisation trial was conducted over 30 ladle heats during June 2009. The charcoal was manually added to the liquid steel in 5 kg bags using normal plant practice. Conventional commercial recarburiser was also added to the liquid steel in alternate ladle heats. The performance of the charcoal was compared with the conventional recarburiser based on the carbon recovery to steel, hydrogen pick-up by steel and the rate of carbon dissolution into steel.   An analysis of the trial results showed that the charcoal performed at least as well as commercial recarburiser in carbon recovery and rate of dissolution but may have resulted in a slightly higher hydrogen content of steel. This is probably due to the higher moisture content of charcoal. The main challenges in the future include: increasing the charcoal density to improve transport and handling economics, securing a sustainable supply of biomass for the steel industry and developing a charcoal production industry so materials of suitable quality for both production and trials on other applications can be conducted.

At the Red Dome and Mungana deposits in north Queensland, Australia, it is proposed that mineralisation and alteration developed as a 'telescoped' overprinting continuum, ranging in style from hypothermal to epithermal, reflecting the major changes that developed in the regional setting over the period circa 325 - 290 Ma. Regional assessment suggests that this also applies to many other precious and base metal deposits within a 40 km length of the host Siluro-Devonian Chillagoe Formation.   A ten stage paragenetic sequence of structural preparation, multi phase intrusion and associated mineralisation, alteration and brecciation is postulated for the Chillagoe district.
