Evaluation of Comminution Circuit Design for Sustainability Using EcoNomicsTM

Drill blasting is a widely used method for rock fragmentation in mining, quarrying and construction industries. Environmental effects such as air shocks, dust, flying rocks and ground vibration are unavoidable results and undesired effects of blasting. Among these ground vibrations can have a damaging effect and may influence on long distances. Therefore various researchers have developed mathematical models to predict ground vibration after blasting. These models take into account the amount of explosive, distance and several coefficients related to the field under investigation. The developed models to predict ground vibration may yield different results for the same case. Selection of the most suitable model requires engineering judgment and evaluation of models. At this point, a computerised system helps the engineer to evaluate and select the most suitable model in order to design and plan a blasting pattern. The safe charge of explosive and magnitude of vibration after blasting should be predicted beforehand. Therefore a computer program namely 'prediction of blast induced vibration' (P-BIV) has been developed. This paper introduces and presents a computer program (P-BIV) which includes the set of models developed to estimate ground vibration to provide blasting engineers a tool to determine the amount of explosive for safe blasting.

"Work in CSIRO with several Australian ores has shown that?by heating a high-phosphorus goethitic iron ore and then leaching with caustic or acid, the phosphorus levels in the ore can be lowered to a commercially acceptable value of around 0.08 weight per cent phosphorus (P). With increasing heating temperatures up to 1300¦C, the extent of phosphorus removal increased. This is considered to be associated with mineralogical changes in the iron oxide phases in the ore during the heating.Little phosphorus was removed from four high-phosphorus goethitic iron ores containing 0.12 - 0.16 weight per cent P in leaches with boiling water. However, leaches with sulfuric acid removed ten to 20 weight per cent of the phosphorus and leaching with sodium hydroxide removed even more phosphorus to produce leach products containing between 0.08 and 0.12 weight per cent P from three of the ores.After heating at 300¦C, leaches at a low pulp density of 0.5 weight per cent solids with 1 - 5 M NaOH and 0.1 - 1 M H2SO4 gave leach products with 0.06 - 0.09 weight per cent P. The lixiviant concentration required and extent of phosphorus removal depended on the ore. At a higher pulp density of 25 weight per cent solids, leach residues with between 0.07 - 0.14 weight per cent P were obtained.More phosphorus was removed from ores heated at 900¦C. Leaches at both the low and high pulp densities, with 1 - 5 M NaOH and 0.1 - 1 M H2SO4, gave leach products with 0.05 - 0.09 weight per cent P. However, the lowest phosphorus levels were obtained after heating the ores at 1200 or 1300¦C and leaching with 1 M NaOH or 0.1 M H2SO4. Leach residues with 0.02 - 0.06 weight per cent P were obtained, even from leaches at the higher pulp density of 25 weight per cent solids. Leaching tests on heated samples under heap leaching conditions at ambient temperatures have shown that phosphorus levels can be reduced to similar levels to that achieved in an agitation leach within ten days.CITATION:Fisher-White, M J, Lovel, R R, Sparrow, G J and Washington, B M, 2013. The Thames Goldfi.eld has been a major gold resource in the west of the Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand, with the Waiotahi quartz vein system forming a large part of the field. Mineralisation is hosted by hydrothermally altered Miocene andesitic volcanic rocks. Both massive columnar-jointed and fragmental volcanic rocks are present. The vein system is dominated by the steeply dipping NE striking Waiotahi-Cambria vein, and associated splays. Hydrothermal alteration increases in intensity from isolated blocks of propylitic altered andesitic material, into the intensely clay altered equivalent. Low rank propylitic alteration is typified by chlorite, calcite and pyrite, with local illite or epidote. Clay alteration is characterised by illite, quartz, kaolinite and pyrite. While broadly forming halos around veining, intense clay alteration also occurs in strongly jointed portions of the hostrock.   Vein textures and the intense illitic clay alteration at Thames are similar to those in some of the other epithermal gold deposits of the Coromandel Volcanic zone, and in deposits of the Philippines, all related to andesitic terranes. Possible causes for textures and alteration being different in these deposits from the more classic Quartz-Adularia-Illite type epithermal systems may be that cooling/mixing rather than boiling dominates fluid evolution. Kaolinite may be also be a product of either of these different fluid types, or has resulted from overprinting of an illitic assemblage by downward percolation of acidic fluid.

Eh-pH measurements were taken on an industrial zinc reverse flotation process at Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited. Laboratory zinc reverse flotation testwork on samples of the feed to the industrial process produced Eh-pH data which were similar to the data from the industrial process.Later, the Eh-pH data from the industrial process were compared with data from a pilot plant scale zinc reverse flotation process at Mount Isa Mines Limited. After comparison with the data from Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation, deficiencies in the pilot plant Eh-pH data could be recognised and corrective actions were taken for the pilot plant. A robust pilot plant zinc reverse flotation process was obtained with consistent performance at the expected level.The implications of these findings for a range of processes are also discussed.

This paper reviews the gold mining history and recent exploration activities on a number of beaches in the Catlins area of coastal South Otago. Past mining history and recent sampling indicate the presence of economically significant concentrations of placer gold, as well as anomalous PGM, and various heavy mineral species. A local source for this placer mineralisation is considered a strong possibility, along with a contribution from the Waiau River catchment via longshore drift. Blacksand beds in Jurassic sandstones of the Southland Synclinorium may represent this local source of mineralisation on the modern beaches. The possibility of placer mineralisation extending onto the inner continental shelf is also considered. Further exploratory work is justified, both for in situ Jurassic blacksand deposits, and to delineate mineralisation in the modern beach and inner shelf environment.

The iron ore industry has reached the end of an unprecedented period of expansion triggered by China’s demand for iron ore. Lower ore prices have led producers to focus on optimising mining operations while extracting the maximum tonnage from the infrastructure presently in place or from projects already underway. A rising global surplus is expected to further force ore prices down and lead to output curtailments, which in turn will help to restore market balance. However, investment in the development of new resources and the development of new infrastructure will inevitably become necessary. Making the right decisions in relation to future processing infrastructure in a climate of uncertain demand and price volatility will not be as straightforward as in the past, where expanding the scale of a proposed operation has been the answer to ensuring economic viability. Overall cost and environmental pressures particularly in relation to wet processing will dominate the decision-making process. IMP Technologies (IMPTEC) has anticipated the need for a dry low cost processing alternative, which can open the way for the development of lower grade magnetite deposits and ensure the sustainability of processing in Australia. The lower grade magnetite deposits are generally fine grained and require grinding to p80 of 30 to 40 microns. Historically, the cost of grinding to these sizes has been and remains a key factor determining the economic viability of a magnetite processing operation. The IMPTEC Super-fine Crusher and Cyclomag Separator are the key components of a proposed radically simplified dry processing alternative, which addresses both cost and environmental issues. Conventional flotation technology has historically failed to achieve high recoveries when treating <15 µm particles (Lynch et al, 1981). The new StackCell™ flotation technology was developed to specifically target this particle size range, and was tested at pilot plant scale at Mt Keith Nickel Concentrator. The streams tested, Slimes Rougher Tailings and Fines/Slimes Cleaner Tailings, represent 21% and 11% of the total nickel lost to tailings in the plant. Laboratory scale test work indicated that an economically significant fraction of these losses was consistently available to be recovered by additional flotation. The pilot plant experimental scope included over 50 tests. A grade recovery curve for each stream was developed, as well as information on the effect of ore type, feed rate, wash water, air flow, collector and frother on the performance of the cell. The single StackCell was able to achieve nickel recoveries of 16.8% and 16.5% on the Rougher Tailings and Cleaner Tailings, respectively, at grades consistent with these blocks. Additional test work of the StackCell in a cleaner scalper duty yielded final quality concentrate with a maximum nickel recovery of 59.5% for the single stage StackCell. Laboratory scale simulation of the downstream impacts of the StackCell operating as a cleaner scalper indicated a net recovery benefit of up to 2.0% for this cleaner block.Tests were completed to compare residence time requirements of the StackCell, as compared to conventional flotation. In 55 seconds, the pilot plant StackCell achieved 50% of the recovery of a 960 second laboratory scale conventional flotation on the same feed material. The apparent improvement in flotation kinetics is attributed to the novel high intensity aeration system, which provides efficient bubble-particle contact thereby shortening the residence time required to achieve high recoveries. The smaller footprint and lower energy costs of such a cell are also benefits of this technology, which is being considered for industrial scale installation as a result of this test work. Given the industry’s historical poor performance treating slimes with conventional flotation, it is clearly best practice to challenge the status quo through innovative new technology, such as the StackCell.CITATION:Hussey, L, Thanasekaran, H and Kohmuench, J, 2017. The uptake of nickel into the lattice of pyrrhotite, Fe1 _1J S was studied experimentally in the temperature range 200°C to 760°C. Nickel from both aqueous solutions and salt melts diffuses rapidly into the sulphidelattice with an accompanying release of iron into the solution or melt. The rate of uptake of nickel and its diffusion into the sulphide lattice were followed by optical microscopy and by analysis with an electron probe microanalyser. Some geological consequences of this phenomenon affecting the distribution of nickel in rocks associated with nickel-iron sulphide ores are discussed.

The interaction of flotation collectors with sulfide minerals takes place at the solid - solution interface. The electrochemistry of the processes which affect this interface are discussed. The interaction of xanthates with sulfides is an electrochemical process, xanthates being electro-oxidised to chemisorbed xanthate and dixanthogen. The role of oxygen is to provide a cathodic process to allow the anodic oxidation to occur. The hydrophobic condition of the mineral surface is brought about by the presence of the oxidised xanthate species. The action of reagents which can activate or depress the flotation of sulfides is discussed briefly.

 The Southern Alps is an active oblique collisional zone which has a characteristic wedge-shaped geometry above a low-angle ductile shear zone. The Main Divide region is a relatively low strain zone above this ductile shear zone, and is _deforming principally along steeply dipping strike-slip faults. Extensional fractures are common at a high angle to the regional structural trend. These steeply dipping structures act as conduits for gold-bearing fluids from depth, and small mesothermal gold deposits have formed at several structural levels including the near-surface region. Gold has also been deposited in a meteoricmetamorphic fluid mixing zone near a conductive thermal anomaly on the western slopes of the mountains. These various gold deposits and their well-constrained structural and tectonic settings can be used as analogues for larger, deeper-eroded mesothermal gold deposits in the Mesozoic Otago Schist belt. High level Miocene veins in NW Otago have formed beneath the main divide of the initiating Southern Alps. Late metamorphic gold-bearing veins formed as fluid escaped from the ductile-deforming crustal root beneath Mesozoic mountains.

Mining is a fundamental activity on which modern society and the world's economy are entirely dependent. Mining investors, large and small, invest on an international scale, frequently being active in several countries.   Prior to committing investment to new countries, the prudent investor will consider the risk involved by analysing a number of physical, financial, administrative and political parameters that impact on the potential financial returns it is seeking. This paper considers these risk factors in relationship to New Zealand and six competitor countries. The conclusion is that for reasons largely within the control of our politicians, New Zealand is a high risk country for mining investors.

The Gosowong epithermal Au-Ag deposits, located on the island of Halmahera, North Maluku Province, Indonesia, are owned and operated by PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals, a joint venture between Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (25 per cent).The Gosowong deposit was a greenfields discovery in 1994. Subsequent brownfields discoveries, most recently in 2009, have resulted in a total endowment of more than 6 Moz Au. The three main deposits include Gosowong, Toguraci and Kencana, and as of December 2013, production comprised 5.7 Mt Au at 24 g/t for 4.3 Moz with remaining resources of 4.2 Mt Au at 13 g/t for 1.7 Moz.Mineralisation primarily occurs in multistage veins, breccias and stockwork veins, with at least four texturally- and mineralogically-distinct vein events, including: banded crystalline quartz, quartz-adularia, quartz-chlorite and quartz-sulfide stages. Vein mode, texture and mineralogy are zoned around areas of maximum dilation, vein width and vein grade. Within banded quartz-chlorite, grades of >1000 g/t Au are common. Anomalous Au-Ag-Pb-As-Sb-K-Li geochemistry in rocks is commonly associated with the epithermal mineralisation. Four major types of hypogene alteration are recognised at Gosowong: silicification (quartz-illite-adularia-pyrite) within the immediate vein zone, argillic (illite-quartz-pyrite) alteration enveloping the vein zone, advanced argillic (dickite-kaolinite-quartz) alteration above and adjacent to the vein zone and within the overlying Kayasa Formation, and propylitic (chlorite-epidote-albite-calcite-pyrite) alteration within the footwall and distal to the vein zone.CITATION:Fitzpatrick, N, Harris, A, MacCorquodale, F and Wardiman, D, 2015. This study provides quantitative data on vein distributions within seven selected epithermal systems, four deposits hosted predominantly in rhyolitic rocks: Ohui, Wharekirauponga, Neavesville and Komata, and three major deposits mainly hosted in andesite: Martha Hill, Golden Cross and Karangahake. The technique of fractal analysis was used to help quantify vein distribution patterns. The fractal dimensions (D) obtained are related to the number of veins per metre, the degree of vein clustering, and vein thickness. An increase in any of these tends to increase the fractal dimension.   It is the relative relationship of these parameters that is important for the characterisation of vein distributions, and the comparison of different deposits. Within the same systems, the rhyolites are characterised by lower vein thickness and vein density, but have a higher degree of vein clustering compared to the andesites. Sections that are deeper and more centrally located within the epithermal system and/or close to major structures tend to have a greater degree of vein clustering, higher average vein thickness and density, and higher thickness to density ratios. This depth control is most pronounced in epithermal gold-silver systems because they have formed at shallow crustal levels where physico-chemical conditions change drastically both vertically and laterally. In addition to lithological and structural control at vein scale, deposit scale structure is of great importance in the deposition of economic mineralisation. Large open vein structures capable of sustaining high fluxes of hydrothermal fluid, favourable for the formation of large, high-grade gold deposits, are best developed in andesite sequences.

Drill hole magnetometric resistivity (DHMMR) is a relatively recent addition to the explorationistsÆ suite of techniques for finding further resources in the vicinity of a drill hole. The method relies on gathering of an applied current into zones which are less resistive than the country rocks and it was first applied to exploration programs looking for weakly conductive sulphides, such as, for example, carbonate-hosted zinc deposits. More recently, it has been applied to a wider range of deposit styles, including highly conductive nickel sulphides. It has been found that the technique is capable of not only detecting mineralisation not seen by conventional electromagnetic (EM) techniques, but it can detect at a greater distance. Also, whilst EM is superior at defining tabular-shaped conductors, DHMMR may be more effective at finding cigar shaped sulphides. This paper presents a number of examples illustrating these findings.

The exposures resulting from development work, following on the discovery of a new shoot of hIgh grade ore at the north end of the Sardine tin mine, during 1952, have provided an unusual opportunity to study the oxidation of a stannite-rich ore. Through the kindness of C. C. Morton, Chief Government Geologist of Queensland, an exactly located suite of specimens representative of the exposures was supplied by J. and W. Reddie. This was later supplemented by a number of specimens culled from a parcel ofrepresentative ore submitted to the Melbourne Ore Dressing Laboratory for testing.The Sardine tin mine, near Ewan, Queensland, has been the outstanding producer of the Kangaroo Hills Mineral Field. Since its discovery in 1918, up to 1952 it has yielded about 1,500 tons of cassiterite concentrates, and about 85 tons of stannite concentrates. The outcrop ore averaged 35% tin oxide, but the grade declined with increasing depth, and by 1930 had fallen to 7% tin oxide. In the northern section of the mine the ore shoots show a downward passage to complex primary s.ulphide ore, containing cassiterite and abundant stannite.The orebodies occur in a series of fissures in a crushed zone about 50 ft. wide in slates and quartzites that have been intruded by granite (Connah, 1952). A quartz porphyry dyke forms the footwall of the original main lode in its southern part, being traced' from the surface to' the No. 4 level (173 ft. vertical depth), and two narrow dolerite dykes were encountered in the workings north of the main...

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Baiyinnuo’er Zn-Pb deposit is a typical skarn deposit in NE China. Skarn and orebodies mainly occur between different units of the Lower Permian Huanggangliang Formation carbonates-sandstone-mudstone or within the contact between intrusions and marble. Skarn minerals are dominated by prograde garnet and clinopyroxene, and the main ore minerals are sphalerite and galena. We conducted single fluid inclusion compositional studies using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry on clinopyroxene (pre-ore-stage mineral) and sphalerite and calcite (syn-ore-stage minerals). The results show that the Baiyinnuo’er fluids are distinctly different from basinal brine but similar to magmatic fluid, thereby indicating that the deposit has a dominantly magmatic origin. This interpretation has also been supported by the Cl/Br mole ratios, which remain stable (~500) in different fluid stages. The decreases for most of the elements in the fluid inclusions from pre-ore-stage clinopyroxene to syn-ore-stage sphalerite and calcite suggest that mixing with groundwater has occurred during mineralisation, with significant Zn, Pb and Ag deposition.CITATION:Shu, Q, Hammerli, J, Chang, Z, Lai, Y and Huizenga, J-M, 2015. "Sampling may be mandatory for safety or environmental reasons. It may be because the value of a sale needs to be determined or to provide important data for investments. Whatever the reason, an incorrect sample will come at a risk. Only the person that relies on sampling data can imagine what the potential cost of such risk is.Sampling itself has a cost too; the direct cost of a quality control department and indirect cost for interrupting a process, such as stopping a conveyor belt during loading. If all material is the same then only one small sample is enough. But if all the material is different, then a very large sample must be tested; in the conveyor belt scenario it must be stopped very frequently and the associated cost will be high.A good sampling plan finds the proper balance between risk and cost. A good sample must be small enough to handle yet large enough to be representative for what information is required. All good samples have three things in common: there was proper access to the material the sampling tool allowed equal probability of particles being selected nothing was disregarded, everything was included.This too is the core of Gy’s ideal sampling scenario, where all particles have the same probability of being selected and included in the sample. There is risk of bias when part of a lot is excluded from the sample. Extra care is needed when sampling particularly heterogeneous, segregated or layered materials. The sampling tool should never systematically leave out a portion; it shall not push aside large or hard particles. Wet samples shall not stick to the sampling tool.
