Briefly, an open stope is one in which the ore is taken out and no filling is put in; the only support for the walls may be posts or pillars of ore. Such a method is limited to orebodies with strong walls and ore strong enough to stand unsupported over the back of the stope. Details vary and depend on the dip of the vein, mode of breaking ground, method of handling broken ore, and so forth. THE interplanar angles for hcp metals vary with c/a ratio, and therefore must be computed separately for each particular metal or alloy. Manual computation of these angles is laborious and time consuming, and for this reason computer programs have been developed to accomplish this task.1"3 However, these programs have certain disadvantages. For example, they require prior knowledge and understanding of ALGOL or FORTRAN languages. Further, they will not print out specific angles but instead give all angles between given limits—thus program2 prints out a total of 26,649 angles between planes with indices and in the range from (4 4 4) to (4 4 4) for any given c/a ratio. The purpose of this note is to present a simple and inexpensive computer program for accomplishing this task. This program is written in BASIC language4 which does not require any prior knowledge of computer programming, and is ideally suited for nonprofessional programmers. It also provides flexibility for the user by allowing him to select any indices for as many or few planes as desired for any given c/a ratio. The federal taxes on incomes and excess profits are of course heavy. In 1917, the value of the mineral production of the United States was a little in excess of $5,000,000,000. The total of federal taxes for that year, for the mineral producing companies, as computed by themselves, amounts, according to tentative compilations, to about $207,000,000, and the total for the comprehensive group of mineral and metal industries to about $766,000,000, which figures represent respectively 9.5 per cent. and 35.1 per cent. of the total tax paid by all corporations. Because of greater complexities in applying the revenue laws to mineral properties than to most other industries, opportunity is afforded for wide differences of view. The taxes indicated above, therefore, are not final and may conceivably be very materially increased. For 1918, the taxes are expected to be still greater, but no compilations are yet available. Taxes at a high rate are to continue indefinitely. The subject is clearly of gravest import to the mining industry in particular. The Commissioner of Internal Revenue, who is charged by law with the administration and collection of the taxes, is determined that these functions shall be performed in a just and businesslike way. Fairness and finality are to be the chief objectives. In view of the peculiar conditions that attach to the tax program as applied to mines and other wasting industries, like oil, gas, and timber, the Commissioner has resorted to professional advice and assistance by manning a Sub-division of Natural Resources with competent engineers, brought in from the several industries, into whose hands he has placed for solution the technical questions involved. These engineers have a two-fold duty: (1) to devote to the solution of these problems their own knowledge and experience; (2) through their acquaintance with their respective industries, and with the men engaged in those industries, to focus upon these problems, by conferences and otherwise, the best opinion of the country. This paper reviews pertinent geology of the Biwabik iron formation, Mesabi Range, Minnesota. This iron formation is divisible into four members. Each member is distinctive and contains marker horizons, which are recog nizable throughout all phases of alteration from lean, fresh rock to high-grade iron ore. Some beds have a larger magnetite content than others. During the process of ore genesis, which is essentially an oxidation process, the magnetite content is lowered. Alteration from iron formation to ore includes both oxidation of iron minerals and silica removal by leaching and these distinct processes progress at variable rates for different locations and structures. Magnetic intensities, of each horizon of the iron formation are dependent chiefly upon its preoxidation magnetite content, upon the subsequent degree of oxidation, upon the character of the enclosing rocks, and on the extent of fracturing, folding, or faulting. The results of a number of magnetic surveys are described and are correlated with results of drill-hole and mine exploration and developmerit. The magnetic anomalies obtained are discussed in relation to phases of formation of ore within the iron formation. General Information One hundred years ago a party of surveyors, applying the principles of geophysical prospecting, discovered iron ore in the state of Michigan in the Lake Superior district. This event was officially reported as follows:' On Sept. 19 (1844) while running the east line of Town 47 North, Range 27 West, they observed by means of the solar compass remarkable variations in the direction of the needle, amounting to 87" from the normal. Ascribing this phenomenon to iron ore, they sought and found it in ledges or outcrops at several points. The solar compass referred to was invented by William A. Burt, deputy surveyor in charge of this party.2 It is used for determining the true meridian by an observation on the sun. Eight years later, on July 7, 1852, the first iron 're, consisting of 6 bbl. of Ore, was shipped from Marquette, Michigan. It was another 40 years before the first or> shipment left the Mesabi Range in Minnesota, in October 1892. It totaled 4245 tons. Fifty years later, 90 years after the original shipment, during 1942 the Lake Superior district shipped 93,495,392 gross tons of iron ore. Production came from Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ontario, Canada. Throughout the 90-Year period it was known that magnetic properties of most of the ore bodies, and of the iron formations in which they occur, affected the compass. First of all I will explain the method of preparing the ore1 ; for since Nature usually creates metals in an impure state, mixed with earth, stones, and solidified juices, it is necessary to separate most of these impurities from the ores as far as can be, before they are smelted, and therefore I will now describe the methods by which the ores are sorted, broken with hammers, burnt, crushed with stamps, ground into powder, sifted, washed, roasted, and calcineda.

VARIOUS classes of coals are recognized in this country at the present time. These classes depend largely upon physical characteristics rather than upon chemical composition, and consequently they cannot be accurately defined. The divisions into anthracite, semi-anthracite and semi-bituminous are fairly satisfactory; but the term bituminous embraces so large a variety of coal that it is of little value, and the term lignite is so loosely applied that it has little or no place in a scientific classification. At present there is no way of accurately defining the vari¬ous classes of coal, because no adequate scheme of classification, which applies to lignites as well as bituminous coal and anthracite bas been proposed. The object of this paper is to present such a scheme, which is based upon data obtained dur¬ing the past year by Prof. N. W. Lord,1 in charge of the chemical laboratory of the United States Geological Survey coal-testing plant at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, St. Louis. All the classifications of coals proposed prior to 1877 were based either on physical characteristics or on proximate analyses, including all of the impurities. FOR over fifty years the Spanish mine, 21 miles northeast of Nevada City, in Nevada County, California, has been one of the Bradley properties. Between 1883 and 1889 it was operated by the late Frederick W. Bradley and P. R. Bradley. The ore averaged only about $1 a ton at that time but the mine was credited with a production of about $900,000 in that period. The property was then closed down until 1922, when the Bradley interests reopened it and continued development for the next nine years, when a 50-ton mill was built. This began operation in April, 1931. This was a selective flotation plant, with the tailing treated on Wilfley tables, and operated on ore from the No. 4 and No. 16 tunnel stopes. A model is discussed from which the work of adhcslon .tor liquid transition metals on aluminum oxide surfaces can he calculated, A close-packed (00011 oxygen surface on A12O3 is assumed with two different types of surface sites: one type involving metal-oxygen bonds and the other man der Waals into actions. The work of adhesion is thus expressed as the sum of these two bonsding free energies. Calculated works of adhesion for nickel, titanium, chromium, and zirconium on sapphire agree well with the experimentally determined quantities. The model is extentled to the calculation of the work of adhesion and shear stress required to remove a thin metal film from a sapphire substrate and is in good agreement with experimental values. The obsewed dependence of the work of adhesion on the free energy of oxide formation of the metal is shown to also provide an interpretation of the tittle dependence of thin-film adhesion. THIS paper presents a model for the type of bonding which occurs across a metal-A12O3 interface. The model is used to explain the results of two types of experiments in which such an interface exists: 1) the adhesion of thin metal films on Al2O3 substrates and 2) the wetting of A12O3 by liquid metal drops. The adhesion of thin films to various substrates has been the subject of a variety of investigations.'-' Benjamin and weaver3 and Bowie,6 using the scratch test developed by Heavens,10 studied the adhesion of metallic films to glass substrates. Their observations for noble-metal film adhesion agree well with an adhesion model involving a van der Waals type of bonding between the film and the substrate. For films of metals whose free energy of oxide formation. ?F°f, has a negative value. Benjamin and weaver3 and Bowie6 found a time-dependent adhesion with an initial value that can be interpreted in terms of van der Waals interactions but a larger terminal value which was related to ?F°f, Karnow-sky and Estill7 deposited films on sapphire at elevated temperatures and noticed no time dependence of film adhesion but a similar correlation with ?F°f. Because of the kinetic problems associated with thin-film adhesion it is desirable to examine adhesion in an equilibrium system. The wetting behavior of liquid-metal drops on Al2O3 provides such a system. Systems of this metal-ceramic type have been studied extensively.11 Humenik and Kingeryl2 have measured the wetting of A12O3 (and other substrates) by several metals and have pointed out that the wetting ability of these metals increases with increasing values of -?F°f. It is thus seen that thin-film adhesion and metal wetting on A12O3 are both related to the tendency of the metal to react with the surface oxide ions of the Al2O3 substrate and, because of this, both phenomena should be explainable by an appropriate model for the metal-Al2O3 interfacial bonding. In the sections that follow, wetting and adhesion data on A2O3 are reviewed and a model is presented by which these phenomena can be interpreted. ANALYSIS OF WETTING EXPERIMENTS In an equilibrium system involving a liquid-metal drop on a solid Al2O3 substrate, the work of adhesion, WAD, is defined by the Dupre, equation as WAD = ?s + ?L -?sL [1] where ?s and ?L are the surface free energies of the solid substrate and the liquid drop, respectively, and ?sL is the interfacial free energy. The work of adhesion is the work required to separate a unit area of the solid-liquid interface into two surfaces. The work of adhesion is usually determined from a sessile-drop experiment in which yL and the contact angle, ?, are measured. The Young-Dupr6 equation is then used to calculate WAD Wad = ?L (1+ cos ?) [2] The literature of this subject has been examined and Table I shows work of adhesion data for various liquid metals as measured on A12O3 substrates. This paper discusses the practical problem of estimating a single equivalent permeability for an oil reservoir, or a portion thereof, whose actual permeability varies in an irregular manner. Limiting averages for general types of permeability variation are developed, and illustrated by examples involving important, specific types of variation. Introduction The theory of the flow of fluids through porous media1"4 is becoming increasingly important in predictions of oil-reservoir behavior. In practical applications, however, reservoirs are seldom found to which simple theory strictly applies. Actual reservoirs have complicated shapes and nonuniform permeabilities and porosities. This paper discusses the problem of estimating a single equivalent permeability for an oil reservoir, or a segment of an oil reservoir, whose actual permeability varies in an irregular manner. The equivalent permeability of a reservoir segment is defined as the permeability of a homogeneous segment of the same dimensions that would pass the same flux under the same pressure drop- It is the permeability value that can be used in simple theoretical formulas to calculate the reservoir behavior. To the authors' knowledge, previous theoretical calculationst on systems of nonuniform permeability have been carried out only by Muskat'"; and he has not dealt with irregular variations, except in writing down the general differential equation for the pressure in variably permeable systems.lb In practical work, many calculations necessarily have been made to estimate equivalent permeabilities from the permeabiiity profiles obtained by core analyses. Regarding such calculations, Johnston and Sherborne6 say: Simple arithmetic and weighted averages have been tried on many wells and it has been found that, where frequent sampling has occurred, the arithmetic average is as satis- factory as a weighted average. It is possible that the application of statistical methods to the analysis of permeability data as recently presented by Law8 may prove fruitful. L,, has made a valuable contribution in showing how statistical analyses may aid in picturing the characteristics of a reservoir from those of a necessarily limited number of core samples. It is believed however that the particular problem of the estimation of equivalent permeabilities can be most directly approached from a fluid dynamical viewpoint as given in the present paper. An example is presented of the use of the conclusions herein in conjunction with Law's method. THERE is a road into the microscopic realm that has remained untraveled through all these years of intense activity with high-power optical and electron microscopy. The road is worthy of careful scouting by metallurgists and other investigators, for it leads into relatively new country and it makes some areas accessible that heretofore could be reached only by very indirect paths or by the use of imagination. And when the road passes through familiar territory it frequently permits a new view of commonplace things that should prove of value from time to time. An accepted way to interest people in new sights such as this is to present an illustrated travelogue. This I propose to do, using many pictures taken in my recent exploration of this road. In the manner of travelogues, I shall touch briefly upon a large number of different subjects in physical metallurgy and shall, attempt to give an exhaustive treatment of none, for the objective is to provide a means for further research, to interest others in it, and to indicate what appears at the moment to be profitable directions for it to take. The method I shall present involves X-rays, but does not make use of the usual accompaniments of X-ray research such as reciprocal lattices, Fourier series, or the stereographic projection. The method is so simple in its fundamentals that it could have been developed 20 years ago, or perhaps even 30 years ago. It is well to have a destination for our travels, so that when we are through we shall have explored some region of importance, despite our preoccupation with the novel means of transportation and our interest in the sights to be seen along the way. So let us name the Cold Worked State as our destination, and make side trips into the territories known as Recovery, Recrystallization, and Precipitation-hardening. A great many investigations have been made of the nature of cold-worked metal, and a great variety of methods used, many of which are indirect, such as X-ray line intensities, X-ray line widths, calorimetric measurements, and magnetic measurements. Since comprehensive reviews of these investigations have been published in recent years, they need not be discussed here. The investigations that were the direct forerunners of the present work should be first mentioned. In 1931 I became interested in the structure of individual spots in X-ray diffraction patterns.1 When a crystal is placed in the narrow pencil of X-rays in a Laue camera, the spots recorded on the film are not always uniformly black, but may have an internal structure. The meaning of this may be understood from Fig. 1, which represents a narrow beam containing X-rays of many wave lengths ("general radiation") penetrating a crystal in the direction of the arrow and forming a pattern on the vertical film at the right.

The Northeast Tripp Slide is one of the larger slope failures that can be attributed to open pit mining. It is a 11.7 million cubic meter (15.3 x l0 6 yd3) wedge failure created by two thick gouge-filled fault zones whose intersection plunges into the Tripp pit at 13°. One unique aspect of this failure is that the slide is now stable despite having moved an estimated 8.5m (28 ft.) towards the pit and having reached a maximum overall velocity of 2lmmlday (0.07 ft/day). The slide started to fail in 1968, accelerated until mining in the slide's toe area was halted in April 1970, then began to decelerate. With the cessation of mining in the toe area, rubblized rock sloughed into the pit bottom which added weight to the failures toe constraints and began the stabilization process. Measurements from a network of survey stations revealed a correlation between the slide's velocity and heavy precipitation. Runoff water accumulating in the tension cracks is believed responsible for this correlation. Moreover, the survey net measurements showed that during the failure's last stage the vertical component of the slide's movement greatly increased. It is proposed that this settling was caused by plastic-like flowage of the clay gouge underlying the failure The fault zone's effective shear strength was estimated by a back- analysis on the wedge's geometry and by performing direct shear tests. The tests, performed on cores taken from samples that were collected on the failure, yielded a residual shear strength of: cohesion 0.61 kg/cm2 (8.7 lb/in2), and a friction angle of 9.6°. This residual shear strength was near1y equal to the back-calculated strength indicating that the controlling fault's effective strength was essentially the same as the residual shear strength of the gouge filling

WHAT American can enter this Western empire without his imagination being stirred by the stories of its past-yes, and even more by visions of its future! Whether we travel by rail or by auto, our pathway has its traditions of exploration and its records of early settlement. The mountain passes and the routes used by today's commerce are lasting memorials of the pathfinders whose unconquerable purpose was to search out a way-Lewis and Clark, Bonneville, Pike, Long, FrBmont, their names still live in your rivers and lakes and peaks. It was the glory of these adventurers that they spied out the land so that others might follow that long pro- cession of pioneers who occupied the new country- fur traders, gold miners, cattlemen, and homesteaders. Each of these pioneers attacked the problem of transportation in his own way, and each sought by his own method to win the resources whose richness had been reported by the pen of the Government explorer or by the swift rumor of the unnamed and unfamed adventurer. Trails were worn deep by these home or fortune seekers as they passed through the mountain barriers in successive waves-and these were waves that did not ebb, for this was an army of occupation. Along these main pathways of the West, as one historian has pointed out, the figure of chief interest was the sad- faced woman sitting on the front of the covered wagon.

TO my mind the National Bituminous Coal Act so far has proved one of the unhappiest experiences that has ever befallen the bituminous coal operators of the United States. Viewed in the light of its ugly consequences everyone should recognize this measure for what it is -a weird thing as unreal as a page from "Alice in Wonderland." Indeed it might be another stanza to the tale of the Walrus and the Carpenter, with the coal operators in the role of the unfortunate oysters who were taken on that memorable ramble. It is time that coal producers open their eyes, jerk themselves out of any lingering hypnotic optimism about the price-fixing provisions of this law, demand the repeal of these corroding clauses, and then set about remedying as best they can the disastrous effects of this retromingent scheme to regulate the coal business.

NEVER before have the annual company reports in the mineral industry field exhibited the typo-graphical art so abundantly as does the current crop. Time was when most company reports made a drab appearance and dry reading, mostly confined to financial data and text that gave little information to the public or technical men. Now, the dollar statistics assume less importance. Considerable information is given on what is going on at the company's plants, new equipment being installed, new methods, properties under development, ore reserves and grades, and similar information of interest to professional men working in the field. We have one suggestion for further improvement: The names of the officers and directors of the company are always given, but only a few companies give the names of the principal operating officials. We think, in the case of a mine for example, that the name of the general manager, his assistant, the mine and mill superintendents, and any other top operating officials who have been largely responsible for the success of operations, are worthy of mention. The reports are now widely read and this recognition is due them. Conspicuous among the annual reports that we happen to have seen, in point of typographical attractiveness, are that of the Texas Co., celebrating its fiftieth anniversary with a gold-plated cover and gold printing inside; and that of Noranda Mines Ltd., with a red and black cover that would attract attention anywhere. Comment on economics, taxes, and labor give an excellent picture of what our industry is facing. Consider the following, from the report of the Union Oil Co. of California:

For the first time in its history the Institute will hold a meeting in the State of Arizona. A few years ago Arizona stood third in the copper-producing districts of the United States. Since that time, with the development of porphyry mines, the output has gone up with great rapidity until it not only is the leading district, but its output at the present time is at the rate of nearly double the Montana output, which now stands second in the list. In connection with this .development, most interesting departures have been made in methods -of mining, concentration and smelting. Principles of mining and metallurgy of the greatest interest will be covered by papers which will' appear in the Bulletin and be presented at Technical Sessions, while ample opportunity will be afforded for those who go to the meeting to see all the points of interest .to them. In addition, members will be well rewarded by the marvelous natural features to be seen on the trip, including 'the petrified forests, the cliff dwellings on the Apache Trail and the Grand Canyon of Arizona.
