RECENT interest in the character of employment of young mining engineering graduates has been stimulated by my studies, during the past ten years, of student enrollment and employment of graduates of the mineral technology schools of the United States and Canada. Enrollment data in the following article are taken from these studies and information about the kind of work engaged in by mining engineers is assembled from my professional experience, sixteen years of which have been as professor of mining engineering.

Describes important developments in, four counties, all of which brought in 40° oil. Indications are favorable for the future, although the daily production of the agate decreased 19,000 bbl. during the year 1923. THE state of Kansas had a daily average crude-oil production of about 87,000 bbl. at the beginning of the year. This showed a steady but consistent decline during the 12 months, so that the daily average production at the end of the year was slightly over 68,000 barrels. GREENWOOD COUNTY THE most active development in Kansas during the year was in Green-. wood County, in a line from near Sallyards in T 25-R 9 to east of Madison in T 22-R, 11. The main part of. this development has been in a succession of pools beginning at the south with the Polhamus pool in 34-24-9 and 3 and 4-25-9; Thrall pool in 28, 29, 32 and 33-23-10; Burkett pool in. 13, 23, 24 and 26-23-10; Seeley and Wick pool in 22, 27, 28, 32 and 33-22-11 and 5, 6, 7, and 8-23-11; Frohm pool in 11, 14 and 15-22-11; Madison pool in 31 and 32-21-12 and 6, 22, 12 and 1-22-11. Some of these pools, have two or more sands, locally called Bartlesville and Burgess Sands. They range in. depth from 1850 ft. near Madison to 2450 ft. near Sallyards, the general dip being to the west. The thickness of these sands runs from 20 to 100 ft., the initial production of the wells being 50 to 1000 bbl. of 40-gravity oil or better.

WITH the exception of the work of Vogel,&apos; and Rolla and Iandelli, very little information has appeared in the literature on titanium binary systems with the rare earth elements. Rare-earth additions to titanium alloys may possibly parallel the beneficial effects on the physical properties of certain steels. Having this in mind, some knowledge of solubility limits and intermediate phases, if any, would be useful. An investigation of the titanium-rich Ti-Ce system was started. Alloy Preparation The iodide titanium from the New Jersey Zinc Co. and the cerium metal from the Institute for Atomic Research Ames Laboratory used in this work were supplied with the typical analysis shown —iodide titanium: 0.0065 pct Mn, 0.0022 pct Fe, 0.0015 pct Cu, and 0.0042 pct Pb; cerium metal: <0.01 pct Fe, <0.03 pct Si, <0.05 pct Ta, <0.02 pct Pr, <0.03 pct Ca, <0.02 pct Mg, with no trace of Nd, La, or Th. The cerium metal, stored in oil, was washed and scraped just before weighing into capped cups machined from iodide titanium. The cold hearth helium-arc furnace described by Schramm et al3 was used for melting. The alloy buttons from the arc-melted cup were cut in two, mounted, and examined. Homogeneous alloys were demounted and rolled to approximately 1/4-in.sq bars. Sections l/8 in. thick were cut from the bar to provide samples. The Ti-Ce alloy buttons analyzed for cerium were of the following composition: 0.19, 0.36, 0.48, 0.61, 1.15, 2.52, 3.06, 3.70, 4.30, 9.20, 14.26, and 18.50 wt pct. Nominal

The effects of using surfactant solutions while diamond drilling in amygdaloidal basalt of the Upper Michigan copper mining district were investigated. Nonionic, anionic, and cationic surfactant solutions, all biodegradable, were tested with size AX surface-set bits mounted on a drill instrumented for continuous recording of thrust, rotational speed, and torque levels. Water flow and penetrations rates were also recorded. A drilling study was carried out, testing two rotational speed levels, two diamond bit grade levels, and four flushing agents (including water as a control). Comparison of all low-speed/high-thrust groups of tests shows that the non-ionic surfactant produced a 35% overall average increase in penetration rate over water, the anionic a 29% increase, and the cationic a 28% increase. These increases in, penetration rates resulted in a 22 to 26% reduction in cost over flushing with water alone. With the high-speed/low-thrust combination, the surfactants produced less benefits in penetration rate increases over water (14% increase for nonionic, 14% decrease for anionic, and 2% decrease for cationic type). Particle size analyses were run on drill cuttings produced by the three surfactant solutions and by water. All surfactant solutions showed a 20 to 50% increase in solids content over that of water alone. Since flushing rates were constant, these increases in solids content agree well with the penetration rate changes. The diamonds were recovered from each bit by matrix dissolution, and bit wear was measured in terms of total loss of weight. Flushing with surfactant solutions showed a savings in bit wear in most cases. The drill team noted also that surfactant flushing improved recovery of drill core by allowing easier removal of the core from the barrel.

CHEMICAL nitrogen and the "nitrates" of commercial significance are derived mainly from three basic sources: (1) the natural deposits in the form of nitrate-bearing earth and clay, which, being largely water-soluble, can exist only in the most arid portions of the earth; (2) coal, which yields not only nitrogen but also the additional by-product hydrogen required for the synthesis of ammonia and its compounds; (3) the atmospheric air, which contains 75.5 pct by weight of pure nitrogen gas. NATURAL NITRATE DEPOSITS Occurrence Although natural nitrate deposits consisting principally of the salts of sodium and potassium have been reported in Egypt, South Africa, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Peru and the USA, the only known natural nitrate resources of commercial importance are the vast deposits found in the Atacama, Tarapaca and Antofagasta regions of northern Chile, lying in a narrow strip 10 to 50 miles wide and roughly 450 miles long, between latitudes [19O] and [26OS]. In addition to yielding nitrates of sodium and potassium, these deposits are the source of the major portion of the world&apos;s supply of iodine. The nitrate-bearing ores known in Chile as caliche are variable in composition and may contain from 5 to 30 pct each of nitrate, chloride and sulphate. While the deposits are present chiefly in the form of the sodium salt, potassium, magnesium and calcium also occur in percent- ages from 0.1 to 5; usually as double salts with sulphate, which are but slightly soluble in nitrate leach solutions. These double salts are bloedite(Na2S04.MgS04.4H,0), glauberite (Na2S04.CaS04), polyhalite (K2SO4.- MgS04.2CaS04.2H20). Some deposits contain up to30 pct of their ni-

BERYLLIUM is demanding more of the limelight, and the output of beryllium copper (containing 2% to~ 3 per cent of beryllium) seems to have grown 60 per cent above that of 1936, which was double that of 1935. There is increasing interest in beryllium-aluminum alloys and small quantities are being marketed at $50 per lb. for the contained beryllium. Other alloys also can be produced. Further price decreases for beryllium copper (now $23 per lb. for the contained beryllium) seem , possible and desirable. No difficulty has been experienced in obtaining beryl and a &apos;reserve stock has been built up. One supplier heretofore found reliable has offered to furnish 200 tons per month. The industrial might of the Bowen Basin is primarily the result of Utah Development Co.&apos;s work- which has opened up the Blackwater, Goonyella, Peak Downs, and Saraji mines; built the Hay Point port; and is now developing the Norwich Park mine.

ASIDE from the annual dinner-dance, the two outstanding social events of the Annual Meeting were the dinner- smoker on Monday night and the informal dance on Tuesday night, both of which were held at the Commodore Hotel. Approximately 400 attended the former event, compared with 570 a year ago, and about 250, people were attracted to the dance.

LEADING off the Thursday morning session on Non-metallics was C. E. Heinrichs&apos; paper, "Phosphate Flotation, Its Place in the Technology and Economics of the Phosphate Industry." Mr. Heinrichs also presented a closely related paper, "Milling Methods and Costs at the No. 2 Concentrator of the Phosphate Recovery Corporation," by H. S. Martin. The first of the papers points out the great significance of flotation to the phosphate industry, inasmuch as flotation practically doubles the potential recovery, thereby decreasing production costs and increasing reserves materially. The second paper describes three such plants, two of which are in Florida, the third being at Wales, Tenn. Operating characteristics and costs are reviewed. Answering inquiries from the floor, Mr. Heinrichs said that the adoption of a new parallel-shell dryer, from 60 to 80 ft. long, instead of the old single-shell countercurrent dryer, had increased the unit drying capacity over 300 per cent and had reduced the drying cost to less than 25c. per long ton of dried product. The initial moisture is from 15 to 18 per cent and the final about 2 per cent.

FOR a considerable number of years past, there has been a shortage of experienced coal miners at the coal mine of the Phelps-Dodge Corp. This is probably due, to some extent, to the mines being so far south of the main western coal producing regions, so that experienced men secure employment before reaching this point. These mines are at Dawson, New Mexico, which is in Colfax County, near the Colorado line. The district is known as the Raton field, and the seam being worked is known as the Raton or Blossburg seam. The mines operated are Nos. 1 to 6, 8 and 9. The daily out- put at the present time, with restricted operations, is about 4000 tons, but the daily capacity is about 5500 tons. The mines are so grouped that the coal is dumped over four tipples. The mines are about twenty-five years old and extend as much as three miles under ground; they are all drift openings, with trolley, storage battery, and mule haulage. At the same time that the shortage of miners existed there was a surplus of common labor seeking employment. We learned that the Copper Queen. Branch of Phelps Dodge Corp. conducted a training school in one of its mines which had worked out very satisfactorily, and thus gained the idea of attempting such a school in the coal mines at Dawson.

FRED J. MILLER was born in Ohio, in 1857. He had a common and high school education, supplemented by personal study and special instruction. After serving a 4-year apprenticeship and working in various capacities in machine shops, he became a contributor to mechanical journals and finally a member of the editorial staff of The American Machinist, where he remained for twenty years, the last ten years as editor-in-chief of the magazine, and vice-president of the publishing company. On retiring from journalism, he was for nine years general manager of a group of typewriter factories, and was then commissioned Major of Ordnance in the U. S. Army, being stationed during most of his service at Rock Island Arsenal, where he organized the Civilian Service Division of the Arsenal. He is now a member of the Technical Advisory Committee of the War Claims Board at Washington. Major Miller became a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 1890, and has always taken an active interest in its affairs, having served on a number of important committees, and as a member of Council from 1904 to 1907, inclusive. He was elected President in December, 1919.

A MATERIAL contribution to the success of our Armies in the field has been the portable pipe-line system. These are the words of Brigadier General R. F. Fowler, chief of the supply division of the War Department. The portable pipe line is one of the "secret weapons" the American forces employed in their swift advances through Tunisia, Sicily, and Italy. Constructed of a light steel so flexible it can be snaked around trees, it can be laid at a rate of ten to thirty miles daily right up to the fighting fronts. It has played a major role in supplying combat troops with products varying from petroleum to water.

The delay time for single crystals of iron, zinc, and pre-strained aluminum was measured under conditions of high-speed deformation. The delay time of aluminum was found to be affected by the orientation of the crystal. Under the dynamic conditions employed, tile calculated "activated volume" term appears to be very small for the three metals studied. IN a previous paper,1 it was shown that under dynamic testing conditions at 78° K, there was a delayed yield in single crystals of aluminum and copper which had been cold-worked prior to testing. The experimental results also indicated that the delay-time effect was not due to the interaction of dislocations with impurity atoms or vacancies, but rather to a dislocation-dislocation interaction since aluminum which has not been prestrained shows no delay-time phenomenon. In this paper, some data are reported on the effects of orientation on the delay time of aluminum single crystals; the delay time of zinc single crystals saturated with nitrogen and the delay time of iron single crystals also were measured. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Aluminum (99.997 pct) and zinc (99.999 pct) crystals, 1/2 in. in diam and 8 in. long were grown by the Bridgman technique. The iron single crystal was supplied by Dr. R. Maddin. The zinc crystals containing nitrogen were prepared by melting high-purity zinc in a graphite crucible and the nitrogen was introduced by additions of ammonium chloride. The liquid zinc was then drawn up into glass tubes of 1/2 in. diam and allowed to solidify. The rods were cooled to room temperature before the transfer to the mold for conversion into single crystals. The orientation of all specimens was determined by the Laue&apos; back-reflection technique, Fig. 2 and Table I. To prepare for the delay-time measurements, the crystals were cut with a fine jewelers saw and the ends carefully machined. The specimens then were electrolytic ally polished to remove the cold-worked metal, mounted in a special fixture and hand-lapped. As a final step, the crystals were annealed in evacuated tubes. Specimens of aluminum crystals, Nos. 24 and 26, were compressed 0.5 and 2 pct, respectively, in the direction of the later impact. The zinc specimens were aged at 50°C for 15 min, In the case of iron, only two specimens could be obtained. To obtain sufficient data, it was necessary to resort to a reaging treatment. After each delay-time test, the specimens were aged at 65° C for 100 min. This treatment, according to Clark,2 is sufficient to restore the original delay time. It is believed that although the specimens were plastically deformed approximately 10-4 pct, after each test the delay-time values are reliable. The delay-time measurements were made in an apparatus similar to that described previously.&apos; Single crystals approximately 1 in. long and having a diameter of 1/2 in. were placed in a pendulum which consisted of a bar 1/2 in. in diam and 8 ft long, designed with a crystal holder to accommodate the specimen at low temperatures. The crystal was held at a position 2 ft from the front part of the pendulum. This portion of the apparatus was supported on a fine molybdenum wire. The public is already familiar with the general fact that the scope and the financial resources of the approaching St. Louis World&apos;s Fair are much larger than those of any of the preceding great expositions; and both the visitor and the exhibitor, when he comes to St. Louis in 1904, will find it to be a real World&apos;s Pair, with exhibits and visitors from every known country. Passing over the subject, as to the general Exposition, with this brief statement, I ask Sour attention to the consideration of a few important facts connected with the proposed mining exhibits at this Exposition. First of all, I may say that. reading- and writing-rooms and library facilities will be furnished in the Mines Building for miners and mining engineers, and it is expected that when they visit the Exposition they will make these rooms their headquarters, and give the Chief of the Department and his assistants an opportunity to extend to them such courtesies as may be possible. THE Bingham area in the West Mountain mining district on the eastern slope of the Oquirrh range, some 28 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, has been the most consistent producer for the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company, production having been continuous, except for minor interruptions, since the organization of the United States Mining Co. in 1899. This production has come from fissures and mantos largely within limestone members aggregating something less than 10 per cent of a thick quartzite sequence of Pennsylvanian age which has been warped into an open syncline plunging northwesterly. Bedding on the easterly limb dips 10°-45° but steep-ens to 90° and even overturns on the westerly limb. Ore bodies cluster about the more northerly of two elongate interconnecting stocks of monzonite which have risen in an axial position within this syncline. Largely within the more northerly of these stocks is the low-grade copper ore body exploited in the Utah Copper open cut of the Kennecott Copper Corp. The values, in seams, minute fracture fillings, and disseminations of pyrite and silica, pervade not only the stock but adjacent sediments, and form a nebulous, sprawling mass which both mineralogically and geographically is the center of the district. SINCE the Saar started. the real progress in scrap-metal recover is in the change of point of view regarding secondary metals. The tendency had been to regard scrap as the normal outgrowth of obsolescence, fluctuating somewhat from periods of depression to periods of prosperity. but nevertheless an unwieldy economic factor more to be contended with than embraced. Now, metals above the ground are being looked upon as semi-permanent reserves or stock piles in various stages of repeated use or revolving life cycles. The change in point of view is due to the forced realization that domestic supplies of new metals are limited and many foreign sources are at least temporarily closed. The stock piles must be cultivated. The reserves must be made more nearly permanent. Steps are being taken : (1) develop methods for recovery of scrap metals heretofore not recovered, and (2) restrict strategic metals to uses ensuring a large percentage of re-use, which in turn means substitute materials in the dissipative uses.

C ONDITIONS have not been favorable for new developments in any line. It has been a period, how- ever in which recent developments have been subjected to the severest tests. Those which have been able to hold their own in the severe competition of 1932 must be considered fully proved commercial processes. The continuous vertical-muffle retort plant at Palmer- ton is reported to have been in operation at practically full capacity throughout the year. The high quality of metal produced and the low operating costs are factors which have kept this plant running when many of the older furnaces were shut down. The plant at Meadow- brook, W. Va., is also reported to have been in steady operation throughout the year. Average retort life is said to be better than two years with about three-quarters of the original retorts still in operation after 2 ½ years.

NAPOLEON&apos;S dictum that an Army travels on its stomach has not changed in this present war, but the things an Army&apos;s stomach calls for would be more than strange to Napoleon. Today one of the main articles of diet for the mechanized army is oil and gasoline, and the chief and most efficient source of &apos;apply overland is the pipe line. It was a flexible 4-in. pipe line that supplied the voracious appetite of tanks, trucks, jeeps, and planes across the North African desert. and it is the 1800-mile pipe line from Calcutta to Kunming, Yunnan Province in China, the longest in the world, that supplied oil and 100-octane gas for the trucks, tanks, Jeeps, and planes fighting on the Assam-Burma-China front in recent months.
