At the request of some of the members to whom I have shown a collection of specimens of sulphur from southern Utah, I herewith present some notes relating to the mines and the method of extracting the sulphur from the ore. In preparing these notes I have borrowed from a paper by Prof. G. vom Rath, published in the Neue Jahrbuch fur Mineralogie, vol. i., 1884, dated Salt Lake City, December, 1883. The Cove Creek sulphur-bed, now worked by the Dickert & Myers Sulphur Co., is in Beaver county, near the line of Millard county. It was first discovered by Mr. Ferdinand Dickert in 1869 ; other beds in the same neighborhood mere found by him from 1872 to 1875, making altogether 22 mining claims. The want of railroad communication prevented the early development of these claims; but in 1883 Mr. F. Dickert put up a plant for extracting sulphur from the ore, which proved a perfect success; and in 1885 the property was transferred to a stock company organized under the laws of Utah. The railroad station nearest to the Cove Creek mines is Black Rock, on the Utah Central Railroad, 204 miles south from Salt Lake City, and about 26 miles west of the mines. The road from Black Rock to the mines passes through desert and lava-bed, to the road leading from Kanosh to Beaver, which latter road it joins near Cove Creek fort, a square stone enclosure, erected by the Mormons for protection against the Indians. Cove Creek fort is situated near the eastern limit of a plain bounded on the west at a distance of about 12 miles by the Mineral range, and on the east by the Sulphur mountains, forming part of the Tushar mountains. Petroleum production in the Rocky Mountain district during 1929 registered a small decline from that of the previous year, conforming with a gradual decrease in the amount of oil produced during the last few years. A number of causes may be mentioned to account for this result, chiefly overproduction in other regions and the apparent desire of operators in this territory to conform to the policy of proration and retrenchment adopted by special agreement among operators in many of the fields. Unit operation has been adopted to control oil production from the Sundance sands in the Salt Creek field, Wyoming, in line with the general effort to stabilize this phase of the industry and prevent excessive drilling of new wells. Another factor which greatly retarded development in the Rocky Mountain region was the executive order of President Hoover issued in March refusing the award of new prospecting permits to future applicants and threatening cancellation of all existing permits upon which actual drilling had not been done as specified by law. Only four states in the Rocky Mountain region are important oil producers. In 1929 Wyoming led with an average daily output of 52,600 bbl., followed by Montana, with 10,730 bbl.; Colorado, with 6500 bbl., and New Mexico with 2700 bbl. daily average. These states bear the following percentage relation to total production in the Rocky Mountain district: Wyoming, 72; Montana, 15; Colorado, 9; New Mexico, 4., (Table 1.) The total average daily production was approximately 73,000 bbl. and the total production of all four states during the year was 26,534,606 bbl. This is 2.7 per cent. of the total oil production of the United States during this period. Colorado Although Colorado is not a large producer of oil and natural gas, its oil operations are widely distributed over the state. Experience has shown how difficult it is to obtain information regarding laboratory-tests in connection with the chlorina-tion-process for the extraction of gold from its ores, and I therefore present the following method, somewhat in detail, for the benefit of those who may desire to pursue research work in this field. The ore chosen was a partly-decomposed porphyry, extremely siliceous and comparatively soft, and of an average value per ton of from $25 to $26 in gold and $0.68 in silver. The chemical analysis gave: Fe,O,, 3.35; FeS, 1.5; MnO,, 0.75; ZuCO,, 4; A1,0,, 3.20; H,O, 0.7 ; SiO, and insol., 83.50 per cent. The ore, first crushed to pass a 5-mesh screen, was coned and quartered until a 45-lb. sample was obtained. Samples for assay and analysis, taken from this lot by means of riffles, were crushed to pass a 100-mesh screen. The original sample was divided into 10-lb. lots, of which one was crushed to pass a 10-mesh screen; another through a 12-; the third through a 20-, and the last through a 30-mesh screen. Because of the production of an excessive quantity of fine material it was deemed inexpedient to crush finer than 30-mesh size—a decision the wisdom of which is proved by the data in Table I., showing the increasing ratio of slimes, in proportion as the ore is crushed finer. In order to determine the percentage of fines in the sizes of mesh selected, a weighed sample of ore was taken from each mesh, and a sample from the 10-mesh lot was passed successively through 20-, 40- and 100-mesh screens, and the percentage remaining on each screen determined. This process was repeated with the 12-, 20- and 30-mesh lots, with the results given in Table I.

Weld about these deposits, to find how far their observations corroborated mine. To quote from the paper on "The Mineral Production and Resources of China" by T. T. Read:' "The iron ores at Tayeh * * * * lie along the contact between a marble and an intrusive body of a dark gray syenitic rock. * * * * At one place it is slightly magnetic, apparently having been partly reduced to the magnetic oxide by the action of reducing solutions, which have deposited small amounts of copper and iron sulphides along the foot wall." To quote from the paper on "The Tayeh Iron Ore Deposits"2 by C. M. Weld: "I find the orebodies described as occurring along an approximately E-W contact between hornblende-granite and limestone. * * * * The granite is a granitoid rock consisting essentially of quartz, potash-feldspar and hornblende."' These quotations show the differences of opinion entertained by two observers. My own study of these interesting deposits has been intermittent amid the manifold duties devolving upon a superintendent. General DescriptLon of the Deposits The deposits are situated to the west of the Yangtse River, being connected with the river by a standard-gage railroad of 66 li (18.16 miles, 26 km.) in length, as shown in Fig. 1. The general topography of the region is of mature age, showing broad valleys with sluggishly meandering streams. These deposits are worked as two mines, named the Tieh Shan Mining Department and the Teh Tao Wan Mining Department; the former consisting of three orebodies more or less connected, named Tieh Man Kan, Sha Mau Tze and Lung Tung, and the latter consisting of Chang Pei Shan, Sze Tze Shan, Ta Shih Men, Yeh Chih Ping and Tsin Shan, also more or less connected, as shown in Fig. 2.

I. EXPERIMENTAL FLOTATION CONCENTRATION INTRODUCTION EARLY in 1914 it was decided to test, on a fairly large scale, the treatment by flotation of Anaconda slime and mill tailing. For this purpose a standard-type Minerals. Separation machine was installed at the Washoe Reduction Works during May and June, 1914. This was followed by the. installation of a full-size Callow pneumatic machine plant. Experiments were also made, on a smaller scale, with the Froment, the Towne, the Fields, and the Anaconda flotation machines. The last-named machine was developed at this plant. In addition to the tests made in the standard-type Minerals Separation machine some tests were made using a Minerals Separation machine of the sub-aeration type. During the series of experiments a large variety of oils was tested. Experiments were also conducted using both round-table feed and tailing to determine whether it would be better to displace the round tables by flotation for the treatment of the slime, or to supplement the round tables by flotation of the round-table tailing. A series of tests was also made on the treatment of the mill tailing by grinding followed by flotation to determine the relative merits of flotation and leaching for the treatment of this product. In addition, flotation tests were made on mixtures of mill tailing and slime. The round-table feed referred to above is the total slime from the mill. It contains about 35 per cent. colloidal solids and approximately 90 to 95 per cent. of the total solids will pass through 200 mesh (0.067 mm.). It assays from 2.3 to 2.6 per cent. Cu. The mill tailing referred to above is the total discard from the mill, exclusive of the slime. It is all finer than 2 mm. and about 90 to 95 per cent. will remain on 0.25 mm. INTRODUCTION THE oxidation of pyrites and marcasite in coal-mine strata to produce discolored acid mine drainage has long been explained by chemical reactions occurring in three stages: I. The iron sulphide minerals are oxidized by air in the presence of water to produce a nearly colorless solution of fer¬rous (iron) sulphate and some sulphuric acid. 2. The ferrous sulphate and part of the sulphuric acid combine with additional oxygen to form ferric (iron) sulphate. 3. The ferric sulphate hydrolyzes to form a reddish-brown precipitate and additional sulphuric acid. Nevertheless, chemical data alone are not sufficient to explain all observed facts. The first stage seems to proceed more slowly in the chemical laboratory than in nature. The second and third stages nor¬mally occur to a marked extent within a few days with raw mine water. However, the visible discoloration that characterizes these latter stages will not develop for months if the mine water is sterilized. By means of bacteriological techniques, two organisms have been isolated from acid coal-mine drainage. These are believed to have a part in promoting the chemical reactions summarized above. One organism is considered to be Thio¬bacillus thiooxidans, which is known to be able to convert elementary sulphur or sodium thiosulphate to sulphuric acid. Its relation to the formation of acid mine drainage has not yet been established. Apparently it does not promote the oxida¬tion of ferrous iron compounds in mine, drainage to the ferric state. The second organism has not been identi¬fied by name but is described as "Gram negative, non-spore-forming rods approxi¬mately 0.4 micron wide by o.8 to 1.0 micron long." A pure culture of this when added to sterile mine water will cause the latter to become amber and develop the typical rusty precipitate. However, it has not been found to convert sulphur com¬pounds to sulphuric acid. Further research is planned to determine whether or not these microorganisms play a significant part in the first stage of oxidation whereby pyrites and marcasite minerals go into solution. Some of the conditions found in abandoned sections of coal mines, such as a reduced percentage of oxygen and increased percentage of carbon dioxide in the air, as well as the existing temperature and acidity ranges, will be tolerated by and may even be favorable to these organisms. WIDESPREAD interest in the better utilization of coal is indicated by the attendance of over seventeen hundred men interested in the pro- cessing and utilization of coal and its by-products, at Pittsburgh, Nov. 15 to 18. The conference was truly international in scope and of a scientific character, and must be considered a real success. There were dele- gates--official and unofficial-from America, Belgium, Canada, Czechoslovakia, France, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Mexico, and Sweden. Several Federal and 28 State departments had representatives, also many colleges and universities, and many leading industrial and mining corporations throughout the country. A feature of the sessions was that papers were mostly read in full and attentively listened to, although in some cases they were of a technical nature. The proceedings were opened by the president of Carnegie Institute of Technology, Thomas C. Baker, who spoke of the importance of the conference and felt that without foreign cooperation it could not have been held. There was no need to apologize for the movement of Carnegie Institute of Technology in the matter. Coal is commanding attention in every part of the world; so is power; and coal will remain the chief source of power for generations to come. The coal chemist is working with the engineer, and nobody can forecast what developments there will be in fuel technology. This conference may be the turning point of fuel technology in America. The development and application of these new processes may be of great benefit to Pittsburgh.

THE 129th meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers convened at New York City, in the Engineering Societies Building, Feb. 18-20, 1924. On February 21 an excursion was made to the Bethlehem Steel Co., at Bethlehem, where about 200 members and guests were splendidly entertained. An illustrated description of the Bethlehem Plant will be published next month. The meeting and excursion were largely attended; the registration at New York totalled 1276 versus 1201 in 1923. William Kelly, long identified with the iron-mining industry of the Lake Superior district, was elected President of the A. I. M. E. for the coming year, at ,the annual business meeting, Feb. 19, succeeding E. P. Mathewson. The following Directors were also elected (the date signifies year of termination of office; the final figure indicates the "District" the Director represents).

Let's start at the beginning, Mr. Turner. Where and when were you born? In Lansing, Mich., on July 31, 1880. And what was your education? I went to the University of Michigan, where I got an A.B. degree in 1902; then to the Michigan College of Mines at Houghton, graduating from there in 1904 with a B.S. and an E.M. What was your first job in the mining industry, Mr. Turner, and what were you paid? In the summer of 1902, 1 was a field assistant for the U. S. Geological Survey in southwestern Idaho and southeastern Oregon, working under Israel C. Russell, professor of geology at the University of Michigan, who incidentally, had just returned from an expedition to study the effects of the eruption of Mt. Pelee, on Martinique. I was paid $60 a month and found; in addition to doing geologic and hydrographic work, I cooked many of the meals for a party of four, and wrangled four horses. I slept for four months under the stars, without a tent.

THE future of the steelmaking industry of the Birmingham, Ala., district is closely related to and, in a large measure, dependent on the development of workable, economic processes of ore concentration. Operations thus far in the area have been possible only because of the fortuitous occurrence of iron ore, fluxing stone, and coking coal-all the primary iron-making materials- within a 25-mile radius of the blast furnaces. Commercial ore of the district consists mainly of a 10 to 20-ft hematite-calcite-silica bed locally known as the "Big Seam," a component of the Clinton formation of Silurian Age. At present mining rates, this ore will be available for a number of years. It is largely mined under 1000 to 2000 ft of cover and transported on 15 to 20" slopes that, in some instances, are as much as 10,000 ft long. Under these conditions, particularly with increasing distances from face to portal, mining costs are gradually becoming disproportionately high. Although not a major factor thus far, it should also be noted that the average annual ore output of the district is gradually be- coming more siliceous.

THE Board of Directors of the Institute has authorized the appointment of a committee to draw up rules of procedure under which awards can be made from time to time to petroleum engineers for outstanding contributions to the art of finding and producing oil and gas. These awards will 11e sponsored by the Petroleum Division and are the first recognition by any professional society of outstanding achievement in "oil mining." They will be in the form of either a gold medal, scholar- ship, or other suitable prize. The awards will be financed from the income of the Anthony F. Lucas Memorial Fund, which was started about fifteen years ago, shortly after' his death, by admirers of Captain Lucas.

(Wilkes-Barre Meeting, June, 1911.) OF the several extensive deposits of brown iron-ore in Cuba, including those of Mayari and Moa, that of Mayari was the first to be systematically explored, and was selected as the scene of the first operations in the development of this class of ore. Construction-work, begun in the spring of 1907, involved the building of 16 miles of standard-gauge railroad and two large double-track inclines, the installation of mining-machinery, a nodulizing-plant, power-plant, shops and shipping-facilities, and the dredging of an extensive basin for deep-draught vessels. Unusual weather-conditions delayed the completion of portions of this work so that the entire plant was not in operation until December, 1909. The ore in its natural state contains a very large percentage of water, which increases to some extent with the depth below the surface. Near the surface it is red in color, with somewhat granular structure. The color gradually changes with depth, finally reaching a bright yellow. The consistency also changes towards, the bottom to a clay-like, sticky mass. The relative proportion of red and yellow ore is quite variable; in some places the yellow reaches close to the surface, while in others the red extends almost to the underlying serpentine. Fig. 1 is a map showing the Mayari division of the Spanish-American Iron Co. The ore lies on an irregular plateau about 15 miles long and 5 miles wide at the widest point, entirely covered with pine trees and brush, which grow directly on the ore. The elevation at the northern extremity, which is approached by the railroad, is about 1,700 ft. above sea-level. At the southern end the general elevation is about 2,000 ft. The $650 million financing for Into Ltd.'s Soroako nickel project is a story worth telling-not only because the project itself represents a significant achievement but also because there are certain important lessons that can be derived from our experience in financing the project. A critical appraisal of the methods and successes in the financing plan is presented in this article, in light of goals which Inco sought to achieve. A technical assessment of the project is not included, since Inco Ltd. has submitted a series of papers on this subject at the International Laterite Symposium as part of the 108th Annual Meeting of AIME in February 1979. THE paper of Reno H.. Sales on Ore Deposits at Butte, Mont.,' is a careful and painstaking work, an important contribution to the literature of the subject. As is almost inevitable in a work of such magnitude, a few misstatements occur; and some of these I shall endeavor to point out. Mr. Sales has also fallen into error, as I think, in the application of his theory of ore deposition; and while the modification which I venture to suggest is a minor one geologically, it is of great economic importance. I refer to Mr. Sales's idea of an outward migration of mineralizing solutions from a supposed central copper zone. In order that I may make myself plain, I must first epitomize the theory as a whole, which I understand to be this: All of the Butte ore deposits (save those along the Continental fault, not herein considered) are derived from solutions of magmatic origin, which, at the beginning of their ascent from a great depth, were, acid in reaction, hot, and were carriers of copper, zinc, manganese and other metals. As they departed from their point of origin they lost heat, and, because of reactions with the wall rock, became more and more alkaline. The metal deposited from these solutions in their hot condition was principally copper; and, as they cooled, they deposited less and less copper and more and more manganese and zinc, until the copper practically disappeared. With this theory in general I have no fault to find, nor have I, it must be stated, the qualifications necessary to enable me to pass upon it critically; but it seems to me to be reasonable and probable, and is one which I am quite willing to accept.

During 1973, a 20,000 net ton (18 100 metric ton) formcoke test was carried out at Inland's 26.5-foot (8.08-meter) hearth diameter on NO. 5 Blast Furnace. The formcoke briquettes were produced from Elko1 coal by FMC at their pilot plant in Kemmerer, Wyoming. The briquettes were shipped to Inland in open railroad cars and most of them were placed in an outside storage field until a sufficient amount was available for the actual blast furnace test. The test consisted of three phases: an initial four-week base period; the actual 33-day formcoke test period; and a final three-week post-test base period. During the formcoke test period, the regular coke skip loads were gradually replaced with skips of formcoke until, after a three-week period, the replacement ratio reached 80%. The furnace operated smoothly and quality hot metal was produced. The burden remained permeable and it was possible to maintain wind rates 9 of over 100,000 scfm (47 Nm3/s) without significant blast pressure increases. Dusting from the formcoke was not a problem either in the stockhouse or in the top gas. The formcoke briquettes maintained their original shape and density as they descended through the furnace. When the 80 percent replacement level had been reached, the inwall temperatures became higher than normal (about 2000 ºF (1090 ºC)) and followed an unusual steady pattern. In addition, the top gas temperature became higher than normal, and the hot metal analyses and temperatures began to fluctuate unacceptably. In general, it is felt that the high inwall temperatures were a result of channeling of the hot furnace gases along the stack walls. This channeling appears to have been promoted by a change in distribution of the burden in the top of the furnace which, undoubtedly, was caused by the increased increments of formcoke. Since it was felt to be unsafe to operate the furnace for an extended period of time with the inwall temperatures at the high level, a decision was made to remove the formcoke from the furnace. When this was done, the inwall temperatures returned to normal. Once the inwall temperatures had returned to normal, the remaining 3,800 net tons (3450 metric tons) of formcoke were used in the furnace at a nominal 40% replacement level for five continuous days. The furnace operated smoothly during this period, and the results were representative of satisfactory furnace operation with partial replacement of regular coke with formcoke. The test was successful in proving that formcoke can replace up to about 50% of the regular coke in a large furnace operating at high wind rates. However, additional work will be required to develop acceptable charging practices for using higher levels of formcoke replacement.

Over 8,000,000 people in the United States depend on natural gas for their cooking, heating and lighting service. This service has been made possible only by the investment of large amounts of capital in transportation lines connecting the gas wells to the various communities, thus combining a hazardous mining operation with a public utility service. The effect that making these lines " common carriers" will have on the present and future service to these 8,000,000 or more people is of far reaching ethical and economic importance, and deserves careful consideration. As an introduction, it must be conceded that: 1. Natural gas, although a mineral and obtained by a mining operation-with more uncontrollable and uncertain features to cope with than exist in the mining of coal or other minerals-when served to the public becomes a public utility service. 2. The governmental power to regulate all public utilities in the interests of the public cannot be successfully disputed. 3. Mere suggestion of inconvenience to the utility is wholly irrelevant, as it cannot be considered or allowed to influence in making a defense against governmental regulation. Unfortunately it is not generally appreciated that: 1. Legislative enactments are not necessarily laws, and cannot abrogate economic laws or alter engineering facts. 2. There is a clear distinction between "common carrier" and "public utility," although the terms are frequently confused. ' "A common carrier is one who undertakes for hire to transport persons or goods, or both, from place to place for all persons indifferently, the term implying indifference as to whom shall be served, and an equal readiness to serve all who apply, in the order of their application." On the other hand, property becomes a "public utility" only "when for a particular purpose the public have a right to resort to the premises and make use of them."

The Magma Mine at Superior, Arizona had an unimpressive beginning as a. worked out silver mine that was purchased in 1910 for $130,000 and then incorporated into the Magma Copper Company which has been continuously mining the deposit since 1915. Copper is the principal metal produced. However, zinc, gold, silver and iron have also contributed to the total metal product. Prior to 1973, the production rate of 1500 tons per day was maintained by hoisting 4 and 5 ton pay-loads at speeds up to 1100 FPM through four small hoisting shafts. The hoists used included 8' and 7' diameter double drum, double clutched doc. and a.c. motor driven geared units built as early as 1917. One old timer that did yoeman's service for many years was an 8' Bollen Pulley with a.c. geared drive that utilized an endless rope system with mechanical grip and release mechanism built into the pulley's throat. Primary power for all of these old production hoists was 25 Hertz. Exploration that was completed in 1967 developed a reserve of 10 Million tons of 5 per cent copper which was sufficient to justify new capital expenditures for enlargement of productive facilities to 3300 tons per day. To reach the new reserves a 22' I.D. concrete lined vertical shaft was sunk to an initial depth of 48431. A 12 ½ diameter adit was bored from the mill side of the mountain to intercept the shaft at a point about 1100' below the collar. This 9200' long adit provides the right-of-way for the mine to mill railway and egress for heavy supplies from rail head as well as a conduit for potable water, electric power, compressed air and mine drainage. Mine operating levels begin 3582' below collar and thereafter have been cut at 100' vertical intervals. Skip loading stations have been installed 4282' and 46821 below collar with an in-shaft skip dump station located 800' below collar. This provides for 4500 tons of storage above the mine to mill train loading station located 1100' below collar. Ore and waste are moved horizontally from stope chutes and drift headings by rail haulage to transfer raises which channel all material to the two mentioned skip loading stations. The 22' diameter shaft crossection is arranged with the two skip compartments on the south side separated from the manway and utility compartments by the cage compartment. The cage counterweight operates in a portion of the southwest quadrant of the shaft. The hoisting plant consists of two conventional Nordberg double drum, single clutch, geared, d.c. motor driven units that are identical except for the drives and automatic controls. The drums are 15' diameter x 105" face with LeBus grooving for 2-1/8" diameter wire rope wound in three layers. Mechanical design emp1o::ed is the same as has been used for the past twenty- five years. One drum is attached to the main shaft by 2 large bolted integral shaft flenge. The loose drum is engaged by a 4-arm positive tooth clutch meshing with radially cut teeth of the clutch ring which is bolted to the drum. The drums are one-piece steel plate weldments having a finished weight of 60 tons each and are mounted upon a 36" diameter shaft that also weighs 60 tons. With the addition of brake rings, clutch, bull gear and rope, the total dead weight adds up to nearly 250 tons that is supported by just three double row spherical roller pillow block bearings. There is no bearing between the drums. All pinion shafts as veil as all head sheave journals are supported in the same type of antifriction bearings.

POISONOUS, irritating, or explosive gases are found in almost every industry, and manufacturers of gas masks are called upon to provide gas mask protection for a great variety of conditions, such as operators in horseradish factories, fumigators of homes and ocean liners, and men engaged in the manufacture of tetra-ethyl-lead, the new motor fuel. The modern type of gas mask and respirator, to provide protection against all such industrial gases, is an outgrowth of the gas mask developed during the World War to protect the soldiers against the poisonous war gases. So far, it has been possible to develop ample mask protection from all known noxious gases and fumes present in atmospheres encountered in mines, metallurgical works, and chemical and other industries, so long as there is sufficient oxygen present to support the flame of an oil lamp. The most important development of the gas mask was in providing protection against carbon monoxide- which is the noxious gas that mining men are most concerned with and, in fact, is the noxious gas that man is most frequently exposed to. This paper will be con- fined largely to the discussion of masks for underground use in metal mines. Gases that contaminate the normal air in mines can be divided into two classes: those that are given off normally by the workings, and those that are produced in mine operation.

When silver chloride deforms by pencil glide at temperatures of 26ºand 72°C, grain size has no effect upon the proportional limit and the material necks down to a knife edge under tension. At -196ºC, deformation takes place on fewer slip systems to produce straight slip traces, the flow stress becomes sensitive to grain size and fracture occurs by cleavage from an intergranular source without any reduction in area. THERE are significant differences between the appearance of the slip bands formed in silver chloride and in the alkali halides at room temperature. The bands in sodium chloride, e.g., are fine and geometrically straight, whereas in silver chloride they are coarse and wavy.' Such differences in the slip behavior prompted us to inquire what the effects of grain boundaries might be on the mechanical properties of these solids. As an introduction to a general study of ionic poly-crystal behavior, we have investigated the effect of grain size on the stress-strain relationships in silver chloride at different temperatures. We have chosen silver chloride chiefly because polycrystals can be easily prepared free from cracks and macroscopic voids by conventional techniques. Moreover, as we shall see, the slip behavior can be readily modified by changing the temperature. It will be shown that the effect of grain size on the yield stress of silver chloride is strikingly dependent upon the temperature of deformation and that this temperature effect comes about through a change in the number of slip systems which operate at the onset of plastic flow. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Polycrystalline tensile specimens were made by recrystallizing cold-rolled AgCl sheet. Thirty-gram quantities of AR grade silver chloride powder were melted in a low heat capacity furnace, cast into cylindrical forms 3/4 in. in dim and approximately 1 in. in length and then extruded with a 16:l reduction ratio into rods 3/16 in. in dim. Extrusion temperatures were varied from room temperature to 350°C. In order to impart various degrees of cold'work to the extruded rod. All extrusions were then cross rolled to sheet 0.040 in. in thickness at room temperature and machined to form tensile specimens having a gage length of 0.750 in. with a width of either 0.250 or 0.145 in.* Annealing was carried out in an air oven at 200°C for periods up to 20 hr. specimens having average grain diameters ranging from 0.024 to 0.40 mm were prepared by varying the extrusion temperature and annealing time in the conventional manner. To obtain specimens with grain sizes larger than 0.40mm, lightly deformed thin prisims of silver chloride single crystals (supplied by Harshaw Chemical Co.) were recrystallized. Grain size determinations were made by an intercept method and revealed that the grains were equi-axed. Laue back-reflection X-ray patterns showed little tendency to form a preferred orientation texture. Specimens which were to be used for the slip band studies were polished by immersion in fresh boiling concentrated NH,OH for 60 sec. They were then etch polished for 10 sec on each side by hand lapping on a stationary velveteen lap wetted with a dilute Hypo solution (5 g of Kodak Acid Fixer in 100 cc H20). Finally the specimens were rinsed in warm water and alcohol, blown dry and carefully mounted in the tensile machine for testing. Tensile tests were performed at three temperatures, namely, 26º, -72º, and -196°C. A screw-driven hard tensile machine was used at a constant strain rate of 0.006 in. per in. per min. Loads were determined with a light- proof ring fitted with A-18 strain gages and extensions were measured with a 0.0001 in. dial gage. Constant level baths of alcohol with dry ice and liquid nitrogen were used to maintain the two lower test temperatures. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Reproducibility—In view of the light sensitivity and reactive nature of silver chloride, it was necessary to determine whether reproducibility depended upon either exposure to light or to the condition of the surface.
