Reconnaisance samples of reported beryllium occurrences in Idaho, Washington, Montana, and Oregon were chemically and spectroscopically tested in a mobile laboratory. The two predominant types of occurrences were green beryl associated with Cretaceous intrusions and disseminated aquamarine associated with Tertiary intrusions. Although the beryllium content of known deposits in the Northwest is too low for economic development at present, total submarginal-grade beryllium resources in pegmatites are estimated to be 570,000 to 1,870,000 tons containing 0.024 to 0.167 BeO. A potential source of 500,000 to 700,000 tons of beryllium-bearing tactite in Idaho and Montana averages 0.033 to 0.080 percent BeO.

The U. S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines (Bureau) is developing a hydrologic monitoring system for in situ leaching operations. A working prototype of this system was installed and tested at the Cyprus Casa Grande copper mine. Requirements specific to in situ leaching operations were identified by researchers. The system has been a useful tool for researchers and for mine personnel. Observations of the hydrologic monitoring system, including details of the development process, the design of the system, and the software developed at the Bureau have resulted in new ideas for an enhanced design of the system.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. More than 11 Moz of Au and 50 Moz of Ag have been produced from epithermal deposits in New Zealand, almost entirely from 50 deposits in the Hauraki goldfield. Since the 1980s, new deposits have been discovered at Waihi (Favona, Trio, Correnso) and nearby at Golden Cross. Feasibility studies into reopening the Talisman mine at Karangahake are continuing, and advanced projects with preliminary inferred resource estimates are reported at Wharekirauponga, Neavesville and Muirs. In the Taupo Volcanic Zone, 11 prospects have been drilled, resulting in the definition of large but low-grade Au-Ag resources at Ohakuri. In Northland, several Au, Ag and/or Hg prospects are known, and small quantities of Ag and Hg have been mined. Six prospects have had some drilling, with the most advanced exploration at Puhipuhi. The application of Taupo Volcanic Zone geothermal systems research to the modelling of former hydrothermal mineralising processes in some epithermal prospects has enabled better targeting of exploration.CITATION:Christie, A B and Barker, R G, 2015. The goal of the project reported in this paper was to make recommendations for changes in roof bolting procedures and bolter design that would reduce roof bolter accident rates. To that end the project identified the major hazards associated with each task a roof bolter operator per-forms, normalized task accident frequencies. by the time spent on each task, reviewed equipment design features and operating procedures related to the identified hazards and developed recommendations for equipment and procedural changes that would reduce, if not eliminate, the hazards. Electronic and Electric Equipment contains a range of components made of a wide variation of metals, plastics and other substances. Up to 60 elements can be found in complex electronic equipment: base metals, precious metals and special metals in circuit boards and batteries. Because of its amount WEEE represents a considerable metal resource with a higher special and precious metal content than found in ores. The Umicore integrated smelter and refinery recovers and supplies back to the market 17 different metals from EEE. Pre-treated materials enter state of the art, material and energy efficient metallurgical processes for environmentally sound recovery of metals and treatment of off gasses and hazardous substances. The organics in the feed function as reducing agent and alternative energy source during smelting for precious metal recovery. Lithium-ion batteries are treated using a dedicated process. As a result the environmental footprint of metals produced from EEE is much smaller than primary production.

Electrolyzing oxides of titanium, aluminum and niobium could prepare high-Nb bearing TiAl alloy (Ti-45Al-9Nb) at 1500°C. The chosen electrolysis voltage is 3.5V, which is lower than reducing voltage (~4.7V) of electrolyte CaF2, but higher than that of titanium, aluminum and niobium oxides. The investigation shows that compared with traditional methods, this method for preparing high-Nb bearing TiAl alloy is of many advantages such as few steps, friendly environment, low energy consumption, low cost and high current efficiency.

Noise Induced Hearing Loss is the most common occupational disease in the U.S. and of paramount importance in the mining industry. According to data for 2006 from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Continuous Miner operators accounted for 30.2% of underground mining equipment operators with noise doses exceeding the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL). This figure becomes more significant considering that 49% of the 2006 national underground coal production was extracted using continuous mining methods. Thus, there is a clear need to reduce the sound radiated by Continuous Mining Machines. The first step towards efficient noise control of a Continuous Mining Machine requires identification of the various noise sources under controlled operating conditions. To this end, a 42-microphone phased array was used in conjunction with 4 reference microphones to sample the acoustic field of a machine in the Hemi-anechoic chamber of the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. These data were processed using a frequency-domain beamforming algorithm to obtain acoustic maps of 5 sides of the machine. The focus of the test was on the conveyor noise since previous studies showed that operation of the conveyor is the most important contributor to the sound radiated by the machine. From the acoustic maps, the following potential areas for noise control were identified, and included: chain-tail-roller interaction, chain flight tip-side board interaction, and chain-upper deck interaction.

Sensor derived data can add value across the mining operating chain ranging from resource definition, extraction, pre ? concentration, mineral process monitoring and assessment of product quality. Most documented studies on the use of sensors in mining focus on specific technologies for specific applications. These studies do not take into account different aims, objectives and operating conditions at different steps in the value chain. The first part of this contribution assesses key physical performance and discriminatory requirements of sensors applied in each portion of the mining value chain. The second part proposes a framework of methods for quantifying the value added by additional sensor information. Integrating the sensor based technology and the economic value quantification allows for both, designing an economically optimal sensor monitoring network along the whole mining value chain and optimizing efficiencies. Illustrative studies demonstrate the significant economic benefits, in particular in reduction of exploration expenditures, increase in extraction efficiencies, increase in ore product quality and improvement of processing efficiencies.

In medium- to high-grade metamorphic terrains such as found in New York City(NYC), rock mass texture and mineralogy are important factors in predicting TBM penetration destiny. Integration of data from over two decades of traditional field and tunnel mapping suggest that hard-rock TBM penetration in the NYC area depends upon textural, mineralogic, and structural control. The bedrock of NYC consists of many different lithologic units of varying age, composition, texture, and metamorphic grade including many varieties of intrusive rock. In addition, brittle faults of numerous orientations cut the polydeformed crystalline bedrock, producing zones of highly fractured and disturbed ground and high water inflows. Pre-bid compilation of published bedrock data, drill core analysis by geologists to establish lithologic and mineralogic trends, integrated surface geologic mapping along a proposed alignment, and targeted petrographic and geotechnical investigations to characterize the rock mass conditions together constitute an important prelude to successful subsurface bidding and tunneling. A carefully planned program of as-built geological mapping, structural analysis, fracture class mapping, and monitoring of machine performance data provide important information for adjusting to changed conditions. In complex terrains, a clear understanding of the structural geology of any proposed tunnel line is the simplest and most cost-effective method to mitigate losses encountered during TBM tunneling.

A technique for fabricating free-standing, high-aspect-ratio porous and pillar-type Ni structures has been developed using wet Si processing. A wafer of (100) Si was initially etched in HF solution to form deep pores with micron-sized diameter. The aspect ratio can exceed 200. By introducing the as-etched Si into a defined aqueous Ni2+ solution, Ni deposits grew rapidly onto the sidewalls and replaced the Si. Long-time immersion allows the Si sidewalls to be completely converted and thus form a metallic Ni structure with high-aspect-ratio pores. It is known that close-packed submicron Si pillars can be formed by oxidizing and subsequent etching of the macropore sidewalls. Treated in the same Ni solution, high-aspect-ratio Ni pillars were correspondingly emerged by replicating the original pillar-type Si structure.

On December 27, 1961, a fire and explosion destroyed the blasting agent mixing plant and an attached storage barn of the Whitaker-Atlas Supply Co., near Norton, Wise County, Va. Five residences, an office building, four trucks, and three automobiles were completely destroyed; a house trailer and several other trucks and automobiles were severely damaged; and other property damage, including much window breakage, occurred up to 3 miles or more airline distance away. Through the quick action of the fire marshal of the Norton Fire Department, Norton, Va., there were no fatalities and only five persons required hospitalization. This incident is of particular interest because of the widespread practice of mixing fuel oil (FO) with ammonium nitrate (AN) to prepare low-cost blasting agents, in many cases under conditions and circumstances not very different from those presented here. A representative of the Bureau of Mines Explosives Research Laboratory, Pittsburgh, Pa., and field representatives of the Bureau's Health and Safety Activities conducted the investigation. Information in this report was obtained from representatives of the Whitaker-Atlas Supply Co., the Norton fire marshal, and others who were on the scene either shortly before or after the incident occurred. Representatives of the Manufacturing Chemists' Association, the Institute of Makers of Explosives, and individual ammonium nitrate producers participated in the inquiries and investigations.

The Dy deposit is a 21 Mt Pb-Zn-Ag-Au SEDEX-type massive sulphide resource located in the Anvil District, Faro, Yukon. This relatively unexplored orebody lies at a depth of 480 to 920m below surface, dips 20 to 35o and comprises vertical ore thicknesses of 3 to 28m at a 9% Pb + Zn cut-off grade. The deposit has been tested at depth with 63 surface diamond drillholes, but has not yet been explored or developed by underground means. Over the past decade, pre-feasibility investigations were conducted for two separate owners of the property to determine the economic viability of developing an underground mine at Dy. Following these previous studies an assessment was undertaken between 1998 and 2000 to further investigate geotechnical considerations for underground mining. The results and conclusions drawn from this study provide direction for possible future exploration at Dy.

Bureau of Mines Reports of Investigations 3244, 3245, 3246 and 3264 give data of detailed studies on smelting in the lead "blast furnace handling zinciferous charges at Trail, B. C. The present paper gives more on analyses of the gases leaving the top of the charge and on accretions formed on the walls of the blast furnace. New data are presented to show the effect of the temperatures at the tuyere zone on the lead content of the slags made. The greater part of this paper, however, deals with a much debated subject, namely air used in lead blast furnaces. Original data are presented to show the effects on smelting lead 'products when air is supplied to a lead blast furnace under volume versus under pressure control.

The recovery by flotation of some complex uranium minerals such as brannerite and davidite is described. Anionic reagents used for flotation of iron and titanium oxides' are suitable. If care is taken, to emulsify the reagents the slime fractions may be satisfactorilytreated.INTRODUCTIONUranium ores are usually treated by direct leaching with acid or alkali according to the nature of the gangue materials. Concentration of the uranium minerals prior to leaching is not commonly practised because of the earthy nature of most uranium minerals and the difficult mineral dressing problem they pose. Some of the harder complex oxides such as davidite and brannerite are amenable to flotation. This is fortunate since they usually require an expensive, strong acid treat~ent to dissolve the uranium. Flotation tests were commenced in 1949 by officers of the South Australian Department of Mines stationed at Adelaide, first in the School of Mines, then in the University of Adelaide and finally in Departmental mineral dressing laboratories at Thebarton. A THEORETICAL consideration of the mechanics of various water-flooding systems with the viewpoint of comparing their relative merits involves the study of two fundamental properties of such systems. On the one hand, it is important to determine the efficiency of the flood as measured by the percentage of the total area that is swept out by the encroaching water before water actually reaches the output wells. This is really a measure of the regional tendency of the water to "bypass" the oil. On the other hand, the various systems must be compared from the viewpoint of their resistances which determine the rate of fluid production obtainable for given pressures maintained at the water input wells. The first of these questions has been studied and very definite answers have been obtained by means of simple electrolytic models.1 These models showed that, in an ideal system, the percentages of the areas flooded out before water reaches the output wells are about 57 per cent for the direct line-drive flood (the input and output wells being equally spaced and placed in alternate parallel lines), 74 per cent for the regular five-spot network, and 79 per cent for the seven-spot network. With respect to the efficiency of the usual flooding arrangements, they are, therefore, given quite accurately by the above numbers. With regard to the resistances of the flooding networks, electrical conduction models have also been used successfully2 and are well adapted to the problem of determining experimentally the pressure distribution and streamlines, or over-all resistances of specific flooding networks. However, such models do not permit readily a study of the effect of changing dimensions or configuration within a network, since a new model must be made up for each set of dimensions considered.

"Recently, Antamina has completed an expansion program of its operations which increased the thoughput in grinding from acapacity of 109 to 130 ktpd. After commissioning, throughput could be exceeded in grinding and downstream processes but primary crushing became a major bottleneck to the overall production process.With an objective to increase the processing capacity of the primary crusher system, a multidisciplinary team was formed with members of Mine, Concentrator and Maintenance departments, who analyzed the overall context of this process restriction. The main implementations developed were: automatic discharge systems of trucks, logic to count trucks and elaboration of a daily performance report. Following implementation of developed improvements, the numbers of discharged trucks to crusher were increased from 449 to 614 units per day. As a result, the expansion target of 130 ktpd was exceeded and processing capacity was increased from 109 ktpd to 145 ktpd. This improvement adds very significant economical value for Antamina.INTRODUCTIONAntamina is a copper-zinc mine located in the Peruvian Andes. Compañía Minera Antamina is owned by BHP Billiton (33.75%), Xstrata (33.75%), Teck Cominco (22.5%), and Mitsubishi (10%). The mine was commissioned in 2001 with a capital investment of US$2.3 billion, and had a nominal 77,000 ktpd mill capacity. Mining, milling, flotation, and tailings impoundment take place at the mine site, which sits at an altitude of 4,300 m above sea level. The deposit is a polymetallic skarn ore body with intrusive phases of quartz-monzonite porphyry into Cretaceous aged limestone. Copper is present mainly as chalcopyrite with a minor bornite component. Zinc is present as sphalerite. Molybdenum is present as molybdenite. Some lead, bismuth, and silver are associated with the sulphides. The deposit is currently classified into six main ore types [Dechert, 2006], grouped into two categories: copper and copper-zinc. The mill produces four concentrate types: copper, molybdenum, zinc, and lead-bismuth. Copper and zinc, concentrates are transported by pipeline down to the port of Huarmey. Molybdenum and lead-bismuth concentrates are bagged and trucked to port."

Over the past several years, Svedala has developed a continuous charge monitor (CCM) for tumbling mills. It consists of a strain gauge embedded into a rubber lifter and associated electronics. This paper describes the results of a research program to evaluate the technical and economical merits of such a device on a SAG mill. The evaluation includes validation through discrete element modelling and comparison to measured static volumetric load. Inclusion of the measurement into a control strategy and its potential for condition monitoring is discussed.

This research project had two main objectives: (1) To identify the smoke limits of gaseous fuel-air mixtures and (2) to obtain and evaluate basic chemical information on the formation of smoke in very rich flames near the smoke limit. Such information would do much to establish the circumstances for car-bon deposition in gas appliances and in other types of combustors. Based on tests with ethylene and propane, these studies showed the following: 1. Smoke limits are related to the yellow-tip limits of the fuel. Previous research established sufficient data to permit prediction of yellow-tip limits on gas burners using a wide variety of fuels. The present study of smoke limits deals only with ethylene-air flames, but the concept that was developed is probably applicable to other fuels.
