INTRODUCTION The Metropolitan Expressway Central Circular Route with a total length of approximately 47 km is located outside the Inner Circular Route of Tokyo (at a radius of approximately 8 km from the city center). Sections with a length of approximately26 km, slightly less than 60% of the total length, on the east and north sides are in ser-vice. Completing the Central Circular Route (Figure 1) is expected to enable through traffic concentrated at the city center to get around, and to form a well balanced trans-port network, which will alleviate traffic congestion considerably. The Central Circular Shinjuku Route, a section with a length of approximately 11 km on the west side, is now being constructed at a fast pace. The route is being built mainly by the shield tunneling method to carry out work smoothly under a trunk highway carrying heavy traffic and to reduce adverse effects of tunneling work on residents in the neighborhood. Shield tunnels have recently been becoming longer and deeper, and no secondary linings have been used in an increasing number of cases because of the over-crowding of cities or the reduction of budgets for public works. Economical, durable and high-quality segments have been required for linings of shield tunnels. Segments are made of concrete, steel, cast iron or combination thereof. Concrete segments are generally used in shield tunnels of medium to large diameter. Concrete segments are highly durable and resistant to compression, so they are highly resistant to earth pres-sure, water pressure and jack thrust. They are, however, heavy and have low tensile strength, so they are brittle and their corners are likely to spall. Concrete segments should therefore be handled carefully.[1] The authors have developed a steel fiber reinforced highly flowable concrete segment (referred as SFRC segment) that overcomes the weaknesses of concrete segments[2] to construct economical, durable and high-quality linings. SFRC segments have been applied to outbound sections SJ51 through SJ53 of the Central Circular Shinjuku Route. Unlike conventional concrete segments (referred as conventional RC segments), SFRC segments are made of steel fiber reinforced self-compacting highly flowable concrete. SFRC segments require less reinforcing bars than conventional RC segments because steel fibers are expected to work as reinforcements. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) mining research program at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL), includes the areas of coal mine dust control and monitoring, and explosion prevention. One very important project at PRL is development of a continuous recording person-wearable respirable dust monitor. This Personal Dust Monitor (PDM) is a respirable dust sampler and gravimetric -equivalent analysis instrument that is part of a belt-worn mine cap lamp battery unit. Prototypes were successfully tested in the laboratory and in four underground coal mines. The PDM testing demonstrated that it was convenient to wear and use, robust, and provided accurate and timely data. NOSH is also conducting research in the program area of coal mine explosion prevention, suppression, and mitigation. Aspects of this research program include: full scale explosion research, laboratory scale research, frictional ignition of methane, mine ventilation seal construction, prediction of coal mine methane emissions, mine monitoring systems, flame cutting and welding operations, spontaneous combustion, and emergency preparedness.

AH pilot and commercial plants working with Mesabi Range taconite employ wet magnetic separation. Progress is being made with a dry magnetic process, but this has not yet been applied to taconite except in the laboratory and pilot plants. Flowsheets in all five plants are similar, including multiple stages of grinding, each followed by magnetic separation, which rejects a finished tailing. The flowsheet in Fig. 1 is used in the preliminary and commercial plants of the Erie and Reserve mining companies and in Unit C of Oliver's Pilotac plant. At Erie the desliming operation is omitted. In the Reserve plants two ball mills are used with each rod mill. Pilotac uses flowsheet 2 in Unit A-B and has also tested flowsheet 3. Principal differences in the three flowsheets are the number of grinding stages and the type of roughing. The terms open-circuit roughing and closed-circuit roughing are best defined by the diagrams. Special Test Data Given in Table I: For the Erie and Reserve commercial plants, Table I reflects routine conditions. Pilotac, the experimental plant, has been run with several flowsheets, including those followed at Erie and Reserve's commercial operations. Pilotac data for these last two flowsheets are similar to commercial plant results and are not repeated in Table I; statistics are given, however, for special test conditions. using other flowsheets. when the objective was to 'to extra-grade concentrate, Variations Among Taconites: Although crude ore tributary to these plants is generally classified as taconite, there are important differences in mineralogy and fineness of dissemination.

"The present large-scale use of energy and power by the human species represents a unique event in the billions of years of geologic history. Furthermore, in magnitude, most of the development has occurred during the present century. In the United States, the peak in the rate of petroleum production occurred in 1970 and that for natural gas is imminent. The peak in the world production of crude oil is expected to occur at about the year 2000 and that for coal production at about 2150 or 2200. For other sources of energy and power, water power, geothermal power and tidal power are inadequate to replace power from fossil fuels. Nuclear power, based on the breeder reactor and utilizing lowgrade deposits of uranium and thorium, has a larger potential than the fossil fuels, but it also constitutes a large perpetual hazard. The largest source of energy available to the earth is solar radiation. This source has a life-expectancy of a geologic time scale, is nonpolluting and is larger in magnitude than any likely requirements by the human s pecies. In consequence of the large supplies of available energy, the period since 1800 has been one of an unprecedented exponential industrial growth. This also has been accompanied by a world-wide ecological disturbance, including that of the human population. It can easily be seen that such a period of growth must be ephemeral in character and, in fact, is now almost over. One aspect of this transition from a state of exponential growth to a state of nongrowth is the present alarm over an ""energy crisis."" Actually, the world's present problems are by no means unmanageable in terms of present biological and technological knowledge. The real crisis confronting us is, therefore, not an energy crisis but a cultural crisis. During the last two centuries, we have evalved what amounts to an exponential- growth culture, with institutions based on the premise of an indefinite continuation of exponential growth. One of the principal consequences of the cessation of exponential growth will be an inevitable revision of some of the tenets of that culture."

Kennecott Utah Copper adopted Outokumpu Flash Smelting and Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Converting in 1995, a process based on granulating high grade copper matte. While nickel mattes and very small quantities of copper matte had been commercially granulated for years, no large scale copper matte granulation system had been built. This paper summarizes the history and benefits of copper matte granulation, the Kennecott design basis, the successful operation for over 10 years and potential problems inherent in some matte granulation approaches.

This bulletin is issued by the Bureau of Mines as a contribution to the increase of safety and efficiency in the preparation and utilization of the mineral resources in the United States. Notable among the drains on these resources are the demands made by the nonferrousmetal industries, and in these the losses occasioned in melting brass and bronze are worthy of particular attention. This statement will be better appreciated by a consideration of the size of the brass industry. MAGNITUDE OF THE BRASS INDUSTRY. According to the Thirteenth Census, in 1909 there were in the United States 1,021 fu-ms that dealt mainly in brass and bronze. This total included jobbing foundries, manufacturing plants that both cast and machine a brass or bronze product, and rolling mills, but did not include iron foundries having nonferrous departments nor the numerous large brass-foundry departments of manufacturing plants that produce the castings used in the manufacture of electrical apparatus, cash registers, pumps, and the thousands of machines that require brass castings for their construction. Penton's Foundry List for 1910 gives about 1,150 exclusively nonferrous foundries and about 2,300 iron or steel foundries that also melt brass. If the rolling mills and. jobbing foundries in manufacturing plants be included, and if due credit be given to the rapid growth of the industry in the last few years, largely through the stimulation of the automobile busi¬ness, it is probable that not less than 3,600 plants are to-day melting brass or bronze.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Cyprus- Plateau Mining Company, has conducted research to provide an alternative to traditional secondary support systems in a two-entry, yield pillar gate road. As recent as two years ago, it was impossible to imagine a gate road supported solely with internal high-strength resin-grouted cable supports that would virtually eliminate the necessity for crib or concrete external supports. The support system evaluated consisted of 1.6-m (5-ft) full-column resin-grouted bolts and 4.8-m (164) long cable supports installed in conjunction with wire mesh and "monster-mats." Cable loading and roof deformations were monitored to evaluate the behavior of the immediate and main roofs during first and second panel extractions. The stress and loading histories for the panels and yield pillar were monitored to evaluate the stress transfer and pillar performance in conjunction with the roof and floor behavior. The test results indicated that the designed support system successfully maintained the roof during the extraction of two longwall panels and dramatically reduced the cost of secondary support. This paper will describe the theory of a cribless support system, the advantages of cable supports, and present the pillar, roof, and floor measurements made to assess the support performance during longwall retreat mining.

The Bureau of Mines is responsible for a broad spectrum of programs for meeting the diverse and changing mineral resource needs of the Nation. These programs are managed by the Director and two Deputy Directors, who formulate general policy and program direction from the Washington, D.C., headquarters. A senior advisory staff, consisting of the Chief Staff Officer, Chief Scientist, and Chief Mining Engineer, provides advice and consultation to the Director on a wide range of scientific and technical matters and acts on behalf of the Director to maintain liaisons with other government agencies, mineral industries, and professional societies. Bureau program activities are classified into two major functions: (1) Developing new and improved technology that will make the production and processing of minerals more efficient, safer and more healthful for mineral workers and the public, and more compatible with a quality environment.

Highwall or face profiling has long been used to facilitate the design and placement of front row blastholes to ensure optimum burdens. Traditionally, a large number of laser measurement points obtained from the rock face or highwall, were input in profiling software packages. This method can be time consuming and requires access to the rock face with a complete view of the highwall, to be successful. Stereo photography has also been used to generate the rock face surface, but this method also requires access to the highwall (and pit floor in some instances) for measurement of reference targets or points.

In spite of a global economy that continues to seesaw and a U.S. Congress that is at odds with the president and themselves, cities around the world are still spending billions on their infrastructure. And that bodes well for the underground construction and tunneling industry and the professionals who work in it. In June, 1,405 of those professionals gathered in San Francisco, CA for the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC). In addition to the first rate technical programming, attendees were able to see first-hand the latest in tunneling technology from 127 exhibitors who occupied 152 booths. Two short courses preceded the conference and two field trips were offered following the conference.

Silicon Carbide is an excellent refractory material. Its physical properties make it extremely useful, particularly in applications where corrosion resistance and wear are important considerations. Commercial silicon carbide refractory is frequently manufactured by bonding silicon carbide particles with clay; however, clay may cause problems in the sintered products. This study investigates the potential of replacing a portion of the clay with andalusite powder. The results show that micron size andalusite powder can improve not only the strength of the refractory but also the sinterability. The mechanisms for these improvements are discussed.

The east span of the 3.5 km long SF-Oakland Bay Bridge is supported by different types of foundations along its span. Starting from the west, its first 460 m section comprising twin concrete box-girders is supported by sands and rock on Yerba Buena Island. A 620 m long steel suspension span then bridges a 25 m deep channel that is formed in sediments overlying rock. Twin concrete box girder structures, each 2.4 km long, complete the stretch over the remainder of San Francisco Bay to the engineered earth fill landing at its east end. For most of its length, the Skyway bridges water 3 to 10 m deep over soft surficial Young Bay Mud. The foundation types include spread footings with hold-downs, steel and concrete piles that are set in drilled rock sockets up to 3 m in diameter and 2.5 m diameter steel tubular piles driven to penetrations of up to 100 m. The design and construction-related considerations are presented. The different foundation types, influences of the site geology and earthquake demands on the substructures are discussed. The seismic motions of the bridge superstructures and substructures, as well as the depth-varying soil motions, influenced the foundation design. Together with performance-based design criteria, including post-earthquake footing displacement limits, these seismic demands influenced various aspects of the foundation design, including the use of battered and vertical piles.

"Water is a very important component in the production process at underground coal mines. Current unfavourable economic conditions have forced the coal mining industry to identify and address every possible bottleneck preventing optimal production. An increase in water-related downtime was identified as one of the bottlenecks at Goedehoop Colliery’s Vlaklaagte Shaft. The purpose of this project was to identify the various causes that contributed to the high downtime (501 hours in 2013, which led to a potential profit loss of R12.9 million) and to suggest possible solutions.After a thorough investigation the main causes of water-related downtime were identified as low water pressure and low water flow caused by pipe leakages and bursts. The main root cause for the low water flow and pressure was identified as being the low pressure resistance (1600kPa) of the thin-walled galvanized steel pipes used in the underground inbye water reticulation system. The pipes were selected according to the previous 1000 kPa pressure requirement for the continuous miner. However, the pressure requirement changed to 1500 kPa, which resulted in the pipes being exposed to much higher pressures than designed for.The water reticulation system was reviewed and current and future underground pipe layout and water requirements were determined for the shaft. The time frame in which the water consumption would be the highest was determined to be between 1 January 2014 and 7 September2014. Machine and sprayer specifications were used to determine theater consumption at the shaft. Three different solutions were considered to solve the water-related downtime problem and to ensure the efficient supply of water to the newly open sections. Permanent underground concrete dams, semi-mobile dams, or new pipe columns with a higher pressure resistance of 3200 kPa were considered. A trade-off study (taking into consideration cost, time to completion and ease of implementation, maintenance requirements, safety, and flexibility) was completed to determine which of these solutions would be most viable.Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. The commercial development of the shallow (2200 ft2 400 ft) Windalia sand reservoir at Barrow Island provided the opportunity to conduct an intensive drilling programme using equipment and techniques designed for optimum performance.During the initial exploratory and reservoir delineation phase, 12 specific Windalia test wells were drilled using drilling equipment with an optimum depth range of 6QOO ft - 8000 ft and a 9 5/8 in by 7 in. casing programme was employed. The average time from commencement of move-in to rig release exclusive of coring for five representative wells was 187 hr during this phase.Development drilling commenced December 1966 with one rig, with the second in operation January 1967.As of January 1 1968, 168 development wells had been completed. The two rigs employed are drive-in units equipped with a telescoping .gelf raising doubles mast.Optimum depth range with 4 1/2 in. drill pipe is 2500-4000 ft. Casing programme is 8 5/8 in. by 5 1/2 in. Efficient performance was achieved immediately. The average time from commencement of move-in to rig release for 15 wells drilled early in the development programme was 99 hr.By application of experience and further modification of techniques, performance was improved to an average time of 72 hr per well for 15 wells recently completed.The major drilling problem on Barrow Island is surface hole drilling due to the very hard surface limestone combined with complete loss of circulation at sea level.In this operation, significant improvements have been effected. During the exploratory phase drilling, 12 1/4 in hole to set 9 5/8 in. casing, average penetration rate was 23 ft/hr. At the commencement of the development programme penetration rate, drilling 10 5/8 in. hole to set 8 5/8 in. casing, was 28 ft/hr for the 15 early wells considered, improving to 55 ft/hr for the 15 recent wells considered.This programme is a team effort and much credit must be given to the enthusiastic co-operation of the two drilling contractors.The current field record is 2 days 4 hr with a 4 1/2 hr move including the drilling of mousehole and rathole.

The main constituents of ferromanganese slags are silicates of Mn, Ca and AI. Factors affecting the recovery of manganese from a low manganese content ferromanganese slag (about 16 per cent MnO) during acid leaching were studied. These included time, temperature, agitation, sulphuric acid addition, solid:liquid ratio and particle size. Agitation rates greater than 300 rev/min. leaching periods greater than 30 min and temperatures above ambient were found to have no effect on Mn recovery. Dissolution of Mn was found to be highly dependent on the amount of acid added.About 90 per cent of the Mn was recovered when 5·5 times the stoichiometric amount of acid was used. About 28 per cent of the Mn was recovered when the stoichiometric quantity of acid (with respect to Mn alone) was used. However, the recovery increased to about 75 per cent when the total stoichiometric requirement of acid with respect to Ca, Al, Mg and Fe as well as Mn was used for leaching. The extent of Mn dissolution also depended on the particle size of the slag. The percentage of Mn recovery (using 5·5 times the stoichiometric amount of acid) increased from about 60 per cent to about 92 per cent when particle size decreased from -36 +52 to -150 +200 mesh (B.S.S.). When the results of this study were compared with those in a previous study involv,ing the leaching of a high manganese content slag (containing about 40 per cent MnO) results were similar except that there was a gr-eater consumption of acid in the present case (i.e. low manganese content slag).

"Bubble area flux has been claimed to be a major tool to dimension flotation equipment. The paper describes laboratory scale (batch and 301 continuous cell using plant feed) and small-scale (1 ,8m3) industrial experiments with coarse-grained massive sulphide ore.Samples were taken with different froth thickness and air addition rates while the bubble size was measured with an UTC capillary device. Problems of averaging the bubble size measurements and the bubble area flux measurements are also discussed.Material balances were calculated using the commercial program BILCO. The flotation rate constants were calculated for pulp and for froth assuming that we can extrapolate the flotation rate constant of the pulp phase from tests using very thin froth thicknesses.The results indicate that the bubble area flux is not alone an adequate dimensioning tool. With fine sizes there was a nearly linear relationship between the bubble area flux and rate constant for constant impeller revolutions. For coarse sizes the form of the relationship is non-linear and seems to go through a maximum value. Thus the final flotation outcome is not a simple function of bubble area flux but depends on the particle size distribution and other more traditional flotation cell dimensioning variables. The effect of the froth residence time in the total recovery of coarse particles is large, but will not be treated in this paper."

The paper describes the components of an Integrated Furnace Control system for covered-arc (shielded arc) smelting with results from the recently started 75 MW Cerro Matoso Line 2 Furnace. The paper starts with a review of the mechanisms of power and feed input and heat losses in the shielded-arc smelting process, and describes how the details of the control system are tailored to the process. The control modules of a covered-arc smelting furnace are described including measured results and screen captures. This paper focuses on Integrated Furnace Controls tailored to shielded-arc smelting, but similar approaches have been recently applied to other furnace processes including immersed-arc smelting.

Vibration levels on a variety of equipment in a South African opencast mine were measured in this study. The well-established ISO 2631-1 (1997) standard methodology was used for the computation of weighted root mean square (WRMS) and vibration dose value (VDV). This method was used to evaluate the whole-body vibration (WBV) on a wide range of equipment in the opencast mine using the two main parameters, namely the daily exposure A(8) which is based on the WRMS concept and the VDV which measures shocks. The results obtained show that while the majority of the equipment rendered exposure levels that are below the exposure limit value (ELV), exposure levels on about half of the equipment do exceed the exposure action levels. The study also highlights the importance of shock in the observed responses.
