"The dissolution kinetics of steelmaking slag in pure water was studied, and the relative influential factors were investigated. The dissolution behavior of slag particles in water was well described by Noyes–Whitney equation, and for this kind of sparingly soluble rigid mineral this simple model was extensively applicable to describe their dissolution process. Experimental data were also obtained to confirm the significant promotion effect on the growth of some algae.1 . IntroductionIt has been found that the population of phytoplankton distributed in the ocean was significantly related to the concentration of some elements [1]. For example, silicon and iron were very low in the high-nitrate low-chlorophyll (HNLC) areas, which was the main factor limiting phytoplankton and other biomass growth in these open ocean surface water [7]. The silicon and iron-rich test also confirmed that the supply of these elements had the direct effect on the growth of phytoplankton processes at HNLC areas [2-8]. So in order to promote the growth of phytoplankton in these ocean areas, providing some of these elements into these ocean areas is a natural idea for choice. Steelmaking slag is a good resource for consideration because it usually contains silicon, iron, phosphorus and other elements that are necessary for the growth of phytoplankton [8-10].Haraguchi has proposed the following idea that [5-6], if steelmaking slag can be spread to the open ocean, the trace components like silicate, iron and phosphate as the indispensable nutrients for the growth of phytoplankton, will be leached into the sea water, not only promoting the growth of phytoplankton, but also making good use of these huge amount of steelmaking slag produced every year. Based on this idea, they have carried out studies in recent years and they found that silicon and iron in the slag could be extracted into seawater effectively and play a positive role in the growth process of many algae. About the dissolution of the steelmaking slag, the Japanese scholars' research work mainly focused on the thermodynamic analysis of its dissolution possibility, and in the process of dissolution they tried to adjust the pH value of the seawater by continuously adding hydrochloric acid, which was deviated from the natural conditions of dissolution, and so the laws drawn under these special conditions can not give the identical guide to the practical application. Therefore, it is quite necessary to investigate the dissolution behavior of the steelmaking slag in the seawater at the normal pH range without adjustment to simulate the dissolution possibility under the natural conditions. In the present study, the silicon extraction behavior from the steelmaking slag was investigated and the dissolution kinetics in this process was also discussed in detail. Further studies were also performed here to evaluate the promotion of steelmaking slag on the growth of algae."

"Navarro is the main garbage dump in the city of Cali (Colombia). Operated since the late 1960s it collects about 1.600 tons of waste daily. The environment surrounding Navarro is highly contaminated and the pollutants released by the dump threaten human health in the adjoining neighborhoods. The goal of our project is to identify major pollutants released from the dump and their distribution in the surrounding ecosystem. In a first phase of the sampling and analysis program landfill leachate was collected and screened for heavy metals and for the most common persistent organic pollutants. This allowed us to identify the most relevant compounds on which we focused in a more detailed second phase investigation. These compounds were quantified in the vicinity of the landfill (groundwater, surface water, drinking water and soil) to get information on their mobility and possible pathways into the human body.IntroductionThe usual technique of waste disposal in most developing countries is by landfilling on not -, or not well controlled sites, where people live close by or even on the waste itself. A typical example for this practice is Navarro, the main garbage dump in the city of Cali (Colombia). Operated since the late 1960s it now consists of about 23 million tons of household and industrial waste. The dump is located on a wetland in the riverbed of the Cauca River, the main drinking water source for Cali. Two ponds of unknown permeability located next to the landfill collect a fraction of the waste leachate. During the rainy season, the ponds frequently overflow and drain into the soil (alluvial, loamy sediments) of surrounding sugar cane fields. The environment of Navarro is assumed to be highly polluted and there is evidence that it affects the health of nearby inhabitants. Specifically, the incidence of respiratory diseases was higher among vulnerable individuals (<3 and >50 years old) living in a <3 km perimeter of Navarro as compared with a control group (Solano et al., 2006). Further, a clustering of extremely rare congenital malformations (sirenomelias and cyclops) was observed in a small area during a short time period (<6 months) (Filigrana et al., 2008)."

In the present research the horizontal solidification of Sn-Zn eutectic alloys (Sn-8.9wt.%Zn) is performed, with two opposite senses of heat extraction. From the process of solidification, the thermal parameters (local solidification time, cooling rates and interphases velocities) and grain sizes from macrostructures obtained were determined. The presence of defects in the solidified samples was analyzed, observing that they occur largely in the collision zones of solidification fronts advancing in opposite directions in the samples.

"The study on the preparation of mono-dispersed liquid droplet was performed using ultrasonic as one of the steps of producing the perfectly mono-dispersed particle. The ultrasonic system was a 33.6kHz ultrasonic generator, an amplifier, an electric distortion element, and a bolted Langevin type horn installed in .a cell. For the first time, a liquid pillar under a nozzle of the cell ·was stably formed. Then, dense and coarse parts were alternatively constructed by oscillating the wavelength of the ultrasonic.· The diameter of those liquid droplets were found to be· perfectly uniform, therefore, it was measured by ""multiplex photography"" using a synchronized stroboscope with the ultrasonic.- From the results, more than 30,000 of perfectly uniform liquid droplets in 1 second were observed by this method.IntroductionRecently, research on the control of physical form is done in various fields of industry. Some examples are the processing technology of the minute compound material of micro-machines and integrated circuits, and the form control of molecule size like catalysts. There is a need for such material to take on various forms in correspondence to its use. ""Form control"" as used in this study will indicate ""research on physical chemistry factors which determine the size of the material"" and will refer to the contour uniformity of comparatively little particles. A well-known method of preparing particles is to spout a mist of liquid and slurry from a nozzle l) 2). Particles for metals, catalysts and food have been prepared by this method. In this case, although an approximate particle diameter can be decided by controlling the nozzle diameter and the violent outflow velocity, it is not easy to completely control ·the contour and to prepare a particle with uniform diameter. ·However, the preparation of perfectly uniform particles is necessary for solders for the adhesion of electronic wiring 3), ion exchange resins4), catalysts and so on. Large quantities of fine particles and super-fine particles are generated when manufactured in the usual way. Large quantities of these fine· particles and super-fine particles have polluted the internal and external' environments of factories. The products yield' ·decreases, also. From such a background, this study examines the preparation of perfectly uniform particles that could be· collected -100% as products. Recently, NASA has succeeded in the preparation of perfectly uniform particles in zero gravity 5). But the preparation of 'perfectly uniform particles by this method is difficult, and it can not be used in general industry"

The use or primary dross as a source for aluminum ion in the manufacture of aluminum sulfate offers opportunities for an inexpensive raw material. The aluminum sulfate industry in the US is a mature market with numerous small plants operating close to major users. The majority of manufacturers use either bauxite or aluminum oxide trihydrate as a source for the alum¬inum ion.. However, using process technology developed and patented by IWC, the oxides are removed from primary dross for use in manufacturing aluminum sulfate prior to metal recovery. This process offers the benefit of reducing costs for metal recovery. This paper discusses some of the methodology used in this process.

"In order to prevent corner cracks on cast steel slab and bloom, solidification delay at the corners should be controlled at the proper level. For this purpose, controlling the heat flux from the molten steel to the solidified shell at corners is essential. In this paper, optimization of the submerged nozzle was studied based on flow and solidification analysis.First, for the slab caster, the submerged nozzle shape was optimized. The improved nozzle was tested in actual casting and completely succeeded in preventing corner cracks. It was clearly demonstrated that the solidification delay and the corner cracks were strongly affected by the spouting stream from the submerged nozzle.For the bloom caster, on the other hand, the setting angle of the nozzle was optimized. Numerical simulations demonstrated that the spouting stream from the nozzle causes solidification delay, impinging at the corners under electromagnetic stirring conditions. Optimization of the setting angle of the nozzle is a possible means to reduce the solidification delay at the corners for the bloom caster.Related to the numerical analysis of flow and solidification, the effect of the critical solid fraction at the tip of the dendrite structure on the solidification under electromagnetic stirring conditions was studied."

"Colombia produces nine tons of electronic waste per year and there are approximately 60 tons accumulation generated in the last nine years. This work aims to establish a general methodology in the laboratory to recover gold, silver and platinum group present in electronic waste, also explore other forms of recovery of metals contained in electronic waste. We selected seven types of electronic cards present in the computers, which have their parent desoldering electronic components. Initially, we characterized the components of the cards through X-ray diffraction and SEM, to identify the metal species and composition. Tests were conducted laboratory hydrometallurgical recovery of metals. This paper proposes a methodology for laboratory-scale work.INTRODUCTIONColombia produces nine tonnes of electronic waste per year and build there in about 60 tons generated in the last 9 years [1], Computers, TVs, audio equipment, monitors, cell phones, remote controls, printers and operated toys battery, among others are part of this inventory, which mostly comes to landfills, because the lack of legislation to control the final destination of waste electrical and electronic equipment, and lack of efficient technologies to recover materials [2]. Under these circumstances which have environmental implications, technological and economic recovery is essential metals present in the electronic cards of computers, by hydrometallurgical with subsequent base metal electrodeposition [3]. Pyrometallurgical route is discarded by major implications for economic and environmental [4]. In order to establish the optimized recovery process for heavy minerals from Korean beach sand, we investigated the several physical separation methods such as gravity and magnetic separation followed by mineralogical characterization. There was clear relationship between the particle size and heavy mineral content that heavy minerals were mostly concentrated in the particles below 100mesh. Gravity separation using the spiral and shaking table separators made it possible to concentrate heavy minerals by rejecting the light and coarse particles consist mainly of quartz and other non-valuable minerals. The high-intensity magnetic roll separator and subsequent induced magnetic separator were applied to fractionate magnetic particles according to their magnetic susceptibility. The content of TiO2 of high susceptible ilmenite-rich fraction was 43.98wt.% while those of ZrO2 of non-magnetic and magnetic residue were 6.78wt.% and 3.11wt.%, respectively.

"The requirement for the reduction of sulphur dioxide emissions from copper smelters is becoming more and more important. Therefore, the most important question in smelting technology will be how to produce even, high strength SO2 gas in smelter and how to combine smelting and converting. The best sorution in certain cases is to eliminate converters totally.Outokumpu is already responding to this challenge. As a result of extensive research work, Outokumpu Oy has developed the Flash Smelting Process for direct smelting of blister copper from concentrates in one step.The newest process development is the Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Converting process, where solidified copper matte is converted into blister copper. The production of low volume high SO2 content gases, separation of smelting and converting operations to allow increased on-line availability, and simplified process control are the major benefits of the process which translates to reduced smelter capital and operating costs.Also, it has been studied the use of the same Outokumpu furnace for smelting and converting alternately when the production capacity is low.In this paper, the developments and improvements of the Outokumpu Process are described from the operation and investment cost standpoints"

"This study presents determination on the thermal properties of investment casting shell molds used in casting process modeling. Superheat and latent heat from solidification and cooling of a casting can either be accumulated by ceramic shell for thin-walled casting or transfer to environment for massive casting. Heat capacity and thermal conductivity both play important roles in casting solidification. Thermal properties of ceramic shell depend on shell composition and fabrication techniques as well as thermal history during shell preparation process due to multiple phase transformations. Inverse modeling was combined with corrected Laser Flash method to determine the applicable thermal properties of the shell during casting solidification. Pure nickel was poured into ceramic shells containing two thermocouples and experimental cooling curves were obtained. These curves were then fitted to the model by adjusting temperature dependent heat capacity and thermal conductivity.IntroductionCasting solidification in investment casting shell affected by shell thermal properties including specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity. For relatively thin walled casting, most of the melt superheat and part of latent heat are accumulated by the shell. This process is mainly controlled by shell heat capacity. In the case of massive casting, significant part of latent heat transfers to environment through the shell so that this process is mainly controlled by shell thermal conductivity."

"The results of preliminary work on the modeling and measurement of the heat transfer coefficients of metal/mold interfaces is reported. The system investigated is the casting of uranium in graphite molds. The motivation for the work is primarily to improve the accuracy of process modeling of prototype mold designs at the Los Alamos Foundry. The evolution in design of a suitable mold for unidirectional solidification is described, illustrating the value of simulating mold designs prior to use. Experiment indicated a heat transfer coefficient of 2 kW/m /K both with and without superheat. It was possible to distinguish between solidification due to the mold and that due to radiative heat loss. This permitted an experimental estimate of the emissivity, ~ = 0.2, of the solidified metal.IntroductionA feature that distinguishes casting processes from welding processes is the presence of an interface with a low heat transfer coefficient between the mold and the casting. Especially when chill casting, the interface delays the start of solidification and increases freezing times significantly. By comparison welds can be assumed to have a very high heat transfer coefficient. The heat transfer coefficient controls such phenomena as folds and laps on the surface of castings which can be crucial to the acceptability of a casting. The time delay for the start of solidification influences the occurrence of cold shut defects. The standard mold material for uranium casting is high quality graphite which is an excellent refractory when used in vacuum and coated with a refractory wash. Graphite is an effective chill material and has a thermal diffusivity approximately twice that of uranium. Experience has shown that practicable superheat without mold pre-heat is not sufficient for avoiding cold shut defects when casting in graphite molds.TheoryIt is possible to calculate the position of the freeze front s, as a function of time, t, the superheat and interface heat transfer coefficient, h, [1]. However, the value of h cannot be obtained explicitly. Light weight aluminum alloys are the major construction materials for a number of structures in automobile and aerospace industries. Higher cost of production is the key impediment which restricts the usage of these alloys. A new electrochemical process route for the low cost production of aluminum alloys is being investigated, in which alloying elements are obtained from the dissolved compound. In the present investigation, solubility of lithium compound has been determined by measuring the EMF, when it is dissolved in the electrolyte. The solubility of Li2CO3 increased with temperature from 2.95 wt pct at 1063 K to 7.57 wt pct at 1093 K. Activities of the compound in the electrolyte were deduced using Temkin&apos;s ideal solution approach.

The modernization of the CCR Refinery to permanent cathode technology is presently underway. The 360,000 mt/y refinery is being retrofitted to accept the Kidd process. Part of this modernization includes the installation of Kidd stripping machines, and the total replacement of the materials handling equipment. It also involves the reinforcement of building structures to accept the new equipment and the ability to operate in different modes. The future equipment will interface with some existing apparatus, which is being retained for future operations. The whole operation will be automated and will allow product traceability for quality purposes. This retrofit poses important challenges given the size and scope of the modernization project and because it is being undertaken concurrently with normal plant operations.

The great potential of Brazil for the agricultural production makes our country a generator of agro industrial residues. In this context, the solid-state fermentation appears as a technology that shows alternative ways for those residues, adding values to these raw materials, through the production of substances of industrial interest, besides reducing the possible environmental problems. The main objective of this study was to apply the bovine fat residue associated to the garden grass for the fungal lipase production. Initially, 75 microbial cultures were isolated from garden grass samples after incubation of the mixture with bovine fat. From these cultures were selected the filamentous fungi, whose lipase production abilities were evaluated. The isolation and the selection were accomplished by using a differential culture medium containing Tween 80 as inducer substrate of lipase production. The colonies with lipolytic potential were detected by the presence of white precipitation haloes on the agar. With agro industrial residues the best lipase producer fungus was identified as Penicillium sp in 6 days of solid state fermentation. The crude enzyme obtained was tested in transesterification process for the biodiesel production.

Mineral processing plants typically procure a range of industrial services from contractors. Their satisfaction and value received is directly affected by how the services are procured, rationalized and delivered. Conventional purchasing strategies often focus on price rather than on optimizing the service relationship between supplier and customer. The nature of this relationship may have the greatest potential to reduce costs and enhance production. It has been documented that a service involves simultaneous production and consumption. A high degree of customer involvement is often necessary for a successful outcome and the expectations and attitudes of the customer can positively or negatively affect delivery of the service. This indicates that the customer can enhance or diminish their own satisfaction and value received and the supplier cannot act alone for best results. The Optimax? Program for industrial services is a service delivery framework whereby a customer and supplier work together to raise the efficiency of the service exchange. The Optimax? Program is intended to help the customer optimize costs and maximize production by connecting the customer and supplier through shared information and objectives. This paper will review the basic nature of services, provide a couple of examples of conventional procurement strategies for services and outline the features of the Optimax? Program. A Case Study showing recent results from implementing the Optimax? Program will be included.

Physical treatment and chemical treatment of spent lithium-ion battery were studied in our research team. Especially we developed two types of acidic leaching for crushed powders containing LiCoO2 of spent lithium ion battery. One of them is sulfuric acid leaching with H2O2 as a reducing agent. The leaching rates of cobalt, lithium and the other metals were above 99 % at the condition of 2 M H2SO4, 10 vol. % H2O2, 75 °C, 300 rpm agitation speed, 250 g/5L solid liquid ratio and 75 minutes reaction time. And the other leaching process is the oxalic acid leaching. In this process more than 99% of Li and less than 1% of Co were dissolved at the condition of 3M oxalic acid, 80°C reaction temperature, 300rpm agitation speed, 50g/L initial solid/liquid ratio and 90min extraction time. Each process has its advantage and disadvantage. In sulfuric acid leaching, leaching reagent is very cheap and cobalt could be recovered into cobalt hydroxide. On the other hand, oxalic acid is more expensive than sulfuric acid but lithium could be dissolved selectively. Also cobalt could be recovered into cobalt oxalate and it could be changed into cobalt oxide after heat treatment. In order to select the effective recycling process, recovery rate and purity of cobalt hydroxide and cobalt oxalate were compared and it was investigated which process was more environment-friendly and economical.

Britannia Refined Metals Ltd. was built in 1931 to refine the lead bullion produced at the Mt. Isa mine in Queensland, Australia. Several periods of expansion and development have taken place over the intervening years, leading to major increases in the refining capacity for both lead and silver. A plant for treating recycled lead-acid batteries was added in 1976. This was redeveloped in the early 1990's to utilise Isasmelt technology for the smelting operations. Most recently the No. 2 refinery kettle floor was extended to enable it to process lead bullion produced from two Imperial Smelting Furnaces (ISF), at Britannia Zinc Ltd. in Avonmouth, England and at MIM Hüttenwerke in Duisburg, Germany. This expansion included the provision of a plant for the hygienic handling of drosses and skims. This paper briefly describes the present primary refining operations and gives an update on the most recent developments in the process metallurgy and operating practices that have taken place.

"Textile industries use various kinds of chemicals including dyestuffs and pigments during dyeing and finishing processes. The effluent from these processes includes suspended particles, strong color, high pH and high chemical oxygen demand (COD) that are extremely toxic and make environmental hazard. Although physical, chemical, photochemical, and biological methods are available for treating such wastewater, the electrochemical technique, electrocoagulation (EC), has emerged as an efficient, simple, and cost-effective technology in the last few decades. In this study we present the applicability of EC technique for removing dye, such as direct red dye using iron electrodes, and the optimized conditions such as dye concentration, current density and pH. The degradation of dye molecules was investigated using UV-visible spectroscopy. The EC-floe was also characterized using SEM/EDS, XRD and FTIR.IntroductionWastewaters generated by textile industries contain large amounts of toxic aromatic compounds, especially azo dyes. Azo dyes and their degradation products, such as aromatic amines, are highly carcinogenic. These effluents are also responsible for causing high levels of color. The colored wastewater released into the environment is also a source for disruption of aquatic life and aesthetic pollution as well [1].In most textile industries, dyeing and finishing are the two important processes which are generally applied. These two common processes generate significant amount of wastewater, which may contain, suspended particles, high pH, strong color and high chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration [2]. Low pH and high temperature are other polluting factors from the waste water. Textile industries make use of about 10,000 dyes and pigments [3]. Disposal of these colored wastewaters poses a major problem for the industries as well as a threat to the environment. In textile industries, because of the low efficiency (60-90%) of dye fixing on textile fibers, substantial amounts of unfixed dyes are released in waste waters. The conventional method for treatment of textile wastewater was a combination of biological, physical and chemical methods [2]."

"The enrichment and separation of scattered metal indium component in the pressure leaching solution with sulfuric acid from vacuum furnace germanium slag were studied by iron substitute and P204 extraction, which is supplied by shaoguan smelter. The experimental results show that the extracting power of P204 for indium from pressure leach solution is powerful. The optimal technological condition were the ratio of P204 and sulphonating serosene 3:7, phase ratio 1:3, solution pH 1.2, and extracting 5 minute. The enrichment indium solution of 21.7 g/L In at 95.2% recovery ratio was obtained by three-stage counter flow extraction and four- stage counter flow stripping.IntroductionScattered metals, such as Indium and germanium, were inriched as intermediate product or by-product during the metallurgy process of other non-ferrous metals, such as lead, zinc, copper and tin. For example, the indium and germanium were inriched in vacuum furnace germanium slag, which is the by-product of zinc vacuum distillation operation from hard zinc. It is difficult to recovery the indium from the vacuum furnace germanium slag, because the indium content is low, and the chemical composition and phase compositon were complex.Recovery indium from bearing indium zinc slag was researched extensively, such as pressure acid leaching, high temperature evaporation, solvent extraction method[l-7], acid leaching method has the advantages of high leaching rate, which can be separated hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid and silicon fluoride acid systems. Solvent extraction method has the advantages of low production cost, fast reaction speed, high enrichment ratio, and simple operation."

There are new applications growing at a very strong pace (such as battery alloy), applications that are now penetrating their target markets with significantly increased growth rates (such as bonded NdFeB), and some applications that became more complex requiring much more sophisticated products (such as catalysis). Rare Earth producers have to spend significant ressources in order to monitor the market trends in order to predict the demand and then adjust their raw material mix. Even though there is a greater diversity of raw material available, there is still some Rare Earth elements that are in excess, while other are just in balance. As a consequence rare earth producers invest heavily in R&D in order to develop new applications for these excess elements.
