Centrifugal modeling was used to evaluate reclamation schemes of; (a) flocculants, (b) sand/clay mixes, (c) flocculants/sand addition and (d) capping with sand or sand/clay mix. Results suggest the hierarchy of effectiveness is: (d) capping, (b) s/c mixes, (c) flocculants/sand addition and (a) flocculants. Comparisions between currently used large strain consolidation computer programs reveal no difference between piecewise linear or finite strain calculations. Correlations between numerical and centrifugal model predictions reveal excellent agreement on magnitudes; however, rate predictions require improvement in laboratory input data and centrifugal scaling relationships.

Solids and liquid phase residence time distribution data is reported for a laboratory column flotation cell. The effects of various physical flotation parameters on residence time distributions are reported and analyzed. A plug flow model with recycle is proposed for the froth phase and a tanks in series model for the pulp. By comparison of two and three phase residence time -distribution data it has been shown that the use of liquid residence time distribution data to predict the residence time distribution of the solids in a column is not valid.

Cortez Gold Mines is located about 75 miles southwest of Elko, NV. Activity in the mining district dates from 1862. The current operation developed from a 1963 joint venture of Webb Resources, The Bunker Hill Company, Vernon F. Taylor, Jr., and American Exploration & Mining Co. Three years later, the USGS discovered gold on the property following a regional geochemical survey. Drilling in 1966 and 1967 identified 3.4 million st of oxide ore grading 0.28 oz Au/st, and a 1700 st/day countercurrent decantation mill was commissioned in 1969. Heap leaching started in 1971 on low grade ore and continues to the present. The mill was shut down in 1976 following exhaustion of known oxide reserves. Mobile equipment was sold and the proceeds committed to local exploration. In 1980, a new plan of operations was developed starting with existing low grade and newly discovered mill ore. The mill resumed operations in 1981 and has been operating to date. A series of metallurgical innovations, culminating in the commissioning of a new fluid bed roaster in the summer of 1990, has enabled treatment of a series of increasingly refractory ores. Current partners in the venture are Kennecott Corporation, Vernon F. Taylor, Jr., and Placer Dome U.S. Inc., manager of the operation. Idaho Mining Corp. holds a 7.5% carried interest.

During a period of six months in FY2018, a series of trials were conducted to compare drilling accuracy using two different methodologies and the subsequent impact this had on ore dilution. Testing was conducted at Cracow underground gold mine in Queensland, Australia. The drill rig’s existing alignment process was compared to a new technology system with the following observations: - Using the existing alignment process only 20% of holes surveyed recorded toe points within the +/-300mm (11.8in) tolerance blast-hole deviation. - The new technology was proven to limit rig alignment error, reducing average blast-hole deviation and increasing the number of holes drilled within tolerance by 160%. The increased accuracy reduced stope dilution by reducing over-break of subgrade ore: - Stopes drilled using the new technology recorded 62.6% less average dilution. - This contributed to an overall reduction in dilution for the full year (FY18) of 5 percentage points compared to FY17 - from 22% to 17% (a net decrease of 22.7%). A cost-benefit analysis extrapolated from the trials stipulates that if the new technology were in use for a full 12 months, when applied to FY17 full year data, a 10 percentage point reduction in dilution would represent a net 45.4% decrease, and would result in AUD8.2M (USD5.9) additional ore recovered, with AUD4.5M (USD3.2M) less spent on wasted cost of haulage and processing of diluted ore. As a result, return per tonne would increase 22%, from AUD87 (USD63) to AUD106 (USD77.1). INTRODUCTION Dilution – planned and unplanned – remains a significant cost impairment in the mining process. A series of trials were held over a six-month period in FY18 which established the cost-benefit of new technology as it applies to the alignment accuracy of production drilling rigs in underground mining, thus confirming its ability to limit drilling as one of the causes of dilution. The trials identified three underlying factors affecting drilling accuracy, measurable by blast-hole deviation surveys of planned vs actual toe data. These were; rig alignment error, collar location change/error, and in-hole deviation. The trials involved a comparison of existing rig setup processes and technology, with the new technology (Minnovare’s Production Optimiser system). The trials were undertaken in the same environment; an operating underground gold mine - Cracow Gold Mine. The comparison first revealed the extent to which rig alignment impacts blast-hole deviation. Secondly, the new technology was proven to limit rig alignment error, thereby reducing average blast-hole deviation and increasing the number of holes drilled within tolerance by 160%.

The natural lives of machines and components vary tremendously! Maintenance managers struggle constantly to maximize their equipment lives while minimizing their maintenance costs, but they normally lack the tools and techniques they need to do this properly. This paper proposes a methodology based on probabilities of failure and expected values for repairs that recognizes the variation among individual machines and components as well as the high costs associated with catastrophic failures. It enables a user to determine the optimum change-out intervals for many types of equipment. The approach proposed here is sophisticated enough to be reliable but simple enough to be applied by the maintenance staff on the shop floor. It will complement existing preventive and predictive maintenance programs.

Due to a tight ash constraint on the clean coal product and difficult middlings washability characteristics, a considerable amount of coal was being lost in the jig middlings at the Monterey No. 2 Mine. An investigation was conducted into circuitry to recover this lost coal with minimal effect on the total clean coal ash. A reverse two-stage hydrocyclone system cleaning at low specific gravities was selected. This system is currently recovering approximately 5.8 kg/s (23 tph) of 11.5% to 12.5% ash coal. The specific gravity of separation for the system is about 1.5 and the probable error is 0.13.

A pilot-plant flotation concentrate containing 21.6 g/t gold and 2 kg/t silver was used for this study. Base-line cyanide and thiourea tests showed 30-40% extraction of both gold and silver. After roasting (450-750C), the maximum gold extracted was 89% with thiourea and 76% with cyanide. Pressure oxidation tests were conducted following a statistical experimental design in a 2L laboratory autoclave at 10% pulp density, and the residues were subsequently leached in acidic thiourea solutions for 2h. Leach results were presented in the form of contour maps, and optimum autoclave conditions were determined for maximum gold extraction (93%). However, silver extraction was only 7% when gold extraction was maximized.

Selective fatty acid flotation of carbonate gangue from sedimentary apatites was achieved under acidic pH's without a specific apatite depressant and without conditioning the pulp with the collector. Concentrates (35-38% P205, 0.8-1% MgO) with high recoveries (80-85%) were produced from Indian and Chinese dolomitic ores. The calcareous and/or dolomitic-siliceous phosphate ores of South Florida and Utah required two flotation stages: one for carbonate removal, as mentioned above, and the other for phosphate recovery from siliceous gangue. Preliminary tests on the South Florida ore gave concentrates analyzing 29% P205 and 0.8% MgO with a P205 recovery of 76%. Data are also included showing the applicability of the process to the dolomitic-calcareous-siliceous Western U.S. phosphate ore from Utah. A concentrate obtained from this ore assayed 30% P205 and about 1% MaO.

Borates have been mined in the desert areas of California and Nevada for more than 100 years. To about 1890, playa surface mining provided the chief sources of boron minerals. Underground mining of colemanite and later of borax and kernite was predominate until about twenty years ago. Open pit mining of the large deposits of borax and kernite near Boron, California has been most significant for the past twenty years. Mining of colemanite in the Ryan, California area, near Death Valley, began in 1907. Following the discovery of the large deposits in the Boron area (about 1957), mining in the Death Valley area became nearly nonexistent. Only small tonnages were mined for special uses. Little mining was done in the Boraxo area near Ryan. The first claim was made in about 1915 In 1960 the area became the property of the Kern County Land Company, which was acquired by Tenneco Oil Company in 1967. In 1976 the various borate properties and claims in this region were acquired by American Borate Corporation. The open pit mine is now approximately 400 feet (121.9 m) deep, 3000 feet (914.4 m) long and 1000 feet (304.8 m) wide. The borates in the Boraxo pit consist primarily of three minerals. These are about 50% coiemanite (C2B6O11' 5H2O), about 40% probertite (NaCaB5O9.5H2O), and 10% ulexite (NaCaBcO9.8H2O). The colemanite, along with boric acid and high-grade coiemanite ore from Turkey provide the only sodium-free borates for production of textile grade fiberglas. When heated to its decomposition temperature, colemanite decrepitates to a fine powder. This provides the basis for the concentration process. The gangue minerals in this deposit are primarily calcite and clays, including bentonite. The ore body has a very low arsenic content.which is a desirable feature. Test work had been done with samples prior to the results discussed herein. This paper will discuss results of test work which were the basis for erection of a plant, and the subsequent plant operations.

Project-scale decisions in surface mining operations rely on the optimization and subsequent evaluation of pit limits. This process ignores the ability for mine plans to adapt as more information is gathered. Stochastic methods, which consider uncertainty in the pit optimization, generally act to refine the boundaries of the pit on a fine scale. This paper extends uncertainty-based methods to consider unique scenarios through a clustering of the realizations that are being optimized. This results in the generation of multiple sets of similar realizations. A separate pit is optimized on each set of realizations, resulting in the production of a series of planning scenarios. This accounts for the adaptability of mine planning as more information is gained. A decision-making framework is then applied to the resulting scenario plans to select the optimal choice. The improvements stem from the joint uncertainty considered when realizations are grouped that is not considered when the probability of a block being in any optimized pit is considered. Mining operations today can benefit from considering additional planning options as identified and evaluated in this workflow.

INTRODUCTION The simplest way to drill a hole into rock is to strike a steel chisel or drill bit with a hammer. Early miners used this elementary hand technique so successfully in "single jacking" and "double jacking" that the first mechanical rock-drill designers sought to duplicate it. However, in the early developments, the designers were forced to retreat to a construction known as the "piston drill," wherein the entire drilling element is tied to the piston and reciprocates with it. It took nearly 50 years to devise a method of divorcing the two elements and to achieve the original hammer principle used in hand drilling. The Mont Cenis tunnel, drilled through the French Alps in 1861, usually is considered the birthplace of the mechanical rock drill. The Hoosac tunnel in Massa¬chusetts was drilled at about the same time, and the success of these two ventures paved the way for innova¬tions that produced the Burleigh, Ingersoll, Sergeant, and Waugh piston drills between 1870 and the turn of the century. In 1897, George Leyner of Colorado introduced what has been considered the most significant development in rock-drill history. He devised the hollow drill steel for water flushing; when combined with his free-piston hammer drill, this became the first lightweight and dust¬free underground machine. In addition, Leyner's drills introduced improvements such as automatic rifle-bar rotation of the drill steel and chuck, automatic lubrica¬tion, and an enclosed throttle control. During the 1920s and 1930s, automatic feeds, centralizers, sliding cones, and the automatic water back head were developed, laying the groundwork for all pneumatic underground drills currently in use. Since these pioneering efforts, rock-drill development has been concerned primarily with refining the designs and improving the metallurgy to make faster, lighter, and more dependable machines. Fig. 1 illustrates the progress in drilling speed during the first 125 years of rock-drill development; that progress is a credit to the persistence and inventiveness of the designers in the rock-drilling industry. ROCK-DRILL CLASSIFICATIONS To meet the variety of conditions encountered in rock drilling, several distinct types of drills have been de¬veloped. In general, rock drills may be classified as either hand-held or mounted, with the hand-held ma¬chines including the jackhammer or sinker, the jackdrill or jackleg, and the stoper. The mounted drills are com¬monly known as "drifters." Table 1 shows that each type of drill is available in several sizes from different manufacturers. Fig. 2 illustrates a typical rock drill, showing the principal components. The jackhammer or sinker, shown in Fig. 3, is used primarily for general mine utility work such as drilling anchor holes (short vertical holes to bolt or anchor machinery), pin holes (short, usually horizontal holes to fasten sheaves, etc. to side walls), popholes (for blasting large boulders), and similar applications. They also are used for shaft sinking. Jackhammers are classified ac¬cording to weight, and they range from 7 to 30 kg (15 to 65 lb). The rock drill originally known as a jackleg was made by clamping a pneumatic cylinder or leg to a jack¬hammer, both to support the weight of the machine and to feed the tool forward in horizontal or uphole work. The more modern jackdrill refined this concept to make the hinged pivot for the leg integral with the drill cylinder and to group all drill and leg controls in the drill back head for convenience. Fig. 4 illustrates a typical jackdrill. Jackdrills are classified according to cylinder bore size, ranging from 60 to 83 mm (2.375 to 3.25 in.). Because of their light weight and versatility, jack drills are very effective in small drifts, small tunnel head¬ings, and stoping. When burning coal from this plant, particulate emissions are greatly reduced and the sulfur content of stack ace descend. The cleaner coal also leads to more effecting overall operating of the power plants because of less bulk handling of fuel and ash. In the mid-1970's a major new prospect was proved in a previously unworked region of North East Leicester- shire, United Kingdom. Preliminary estimates from borehole information showed over 500 million tonnes of recoverable reserves. A special Planning Team was set up, to co-ordinate the work for the two local Areas, South Nottinghamshire and South Midlands (management of production of the UK National Coal Board is organised in twelve such Areas). The team was led by one of the authors as Deputy Director, Mining, North East Leicestershire Prospect (NELP). The remit imposed by the National Coal Board was to analyse the possible options of number, location and eventual rates of output of shaft or drift access; to select a recommended alternative in the light of geological, mining, topographical and environmental considerations; and prepare submissions in accordance with standard Board practice on major projects - such submissions including detailed engineering design, financial appraisal, and full risk assessment. To assist the Planning Team, surface and underground consult- ant engineers were appointed to prepare feasibility studies of specific civil and engineering problems.

The Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel will ensure system reliability in the event of a major earthquake and increase the Greater Vancouver Water District’s capacity to meet a growing population’s longterm needs. It includes a bored tunnel between two deep shafts located in North Vancouver and Burnaby, BC, Canada. The support of excavation for the 16-meter-diameter (52.5 ft) TBM launch shaft consists of 83-meter-deep (272 ft) unreinforced concrete slurry walls. This paper discusses challenges encountered during construction of the launch shaft slurry walls, namely excavation methods and slurry loss, and mitigative solutions implemented to successfully complete the shaft with minimal impact to project schedule.

In this study, response surface methodology (RSM) and Box-Behnken design to improve copper extraction from refractory copper oxide ore were investigated. Based on single factor tests, quadratic polynomial equation to describe the relationship between influencing factors (particle size, leaching temperature, sulfuric acid concentration, leaching time) and copper leaching rate could be obtained by RSM. The optimum parameters determined by the model are as follows: particle size 64.60% − 74 μm, leaching temperature 74.15 °C, sulfuric acid concentration 0.49 mol/L, and leaching time 140.85 min. Under these conditions, experimental copper leaching rate of 85.12% could be achieved, which was very close to the predicted maximum value (85.34%) by the model, indicating the quadratic polynomial model was accurate and reliable. Copper leaching rate increased approximately by five percentage points comparing to the result of single factor tests. This study indicates that response surface methodology is an effective method to optimize experiment conditions and achieve an ideal experiment result.

The gray, dark gray and black colors of the sediments and the presence of pyrite in the Carlin, Jerritt Canyon, Horse Canyon, Betze, and Gold Acres sediment-hosted disseminated gold (SHDG) deposits indicate that these rocks are not oxidized with respect to carbon and iron sulfide. Both ore and non-ore host rocks generally are dark colored. Analyses for noncarbonate carbon (usually called organic carbon) in samples from SHDG deposits and related unmineralized rocks indicate that these rocks contain from a few tenths to a few percent carbon. We use the term noncarbonate carbon because, strictly speaking, organic carbon denotes carbon that is bound to hydrogen. However, the carbon present in SHDG deposits and related rocks has very little hydrogen chemically bound to it. Rocks with less than 2% organic carbon are usually gray in color. The dark colors in our samples are due to the relatively high temperatures that these rocks have experienced relative to organic matter maturation. We confirm the results of Nelson et al. (1982) that previous reports (for example, Radtke and Scheiner, 1970) were incorrect in reporting significant amounts of humic acids, extractable hydrocarbons (bitumen) or "carbonaceous" material. We believe these reports had problems with contamination or misdirected emphasis. Our samples consisted of unweathered rocks, collected mainly from mine cuts (benches, trenches, cores) and put into glass containers or wrapped in aluminum foil to avoid contamination. Only a few samples were collected from natural outcrops. We were careful to avoid samples in proximity to blast holes that were packed with ammonium nitrate and diesel fuel ("ANFO"). Contamination by ANFO may explain some of the previous reports of hydrocarbons, pyrobitumens, humic acids and anomalous nitrogen. When we were collecting samples, it was apparent that in addition to lithologic and color differences, the surface appearance of the rocks was distinguishable: "preg robbing" material that had a sooty surface; "graphitic" rock with a shiny surface; and more ordinary rocks that had a flat gray or black appearance. [Preg robbing is a term for ores that adsorb gold from the milling circuit; the graphitic material had not been x-rayed to actually identify graphite.] We hoped that laboratory study of these samples would show some fundamental differences that we could relate to ore genesis. Even though these sample types appeared different in the field, we could not distinguish any differences in thermal maturity (see below). Normal petroleum/organic geochemical laboratory procedures (solvent extraction, Rock-eval, pyrolysis-gas chromatography) failed to yield much information because the carbon was over-mature relative to oil and gas generation. Rock-eval results show less than 20 (± 20) mg of pyrolizable hydrocarbons per gram organic carbon (and an indeterminate Tmax) indicating that the organic matter in these deposits is burned-out relative to petroleum generation [with an H/C (atomic) ratio of less than 0.41. Because of the non-definitive results from standard organic geochemical methods, x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterize the carbon. Prior to XRD, samples were treated with HCl and HF acids (1) to remove quartz that has a peak near 26° [20] at the position of the 002 peak of graphite and (2) to concentrate the carbon to a level detectable by XRD. The residue was put on a colodion mount and analyzed by XRD. The XRD analyses yielded a broad peak at 26° [20]. The shape of this peak indicates that the carbon is more thermally mature than anthracite rank coal but less mature than crystallized graphite. Based on XRD results from the literature (Landis, 1971) that are calibrated to metamorphic facies, results from our samples correspond to pumpellyite-actinolite to lowermost greenschist facies conditions, probably

Most mining and metallurgical plants have developed predictive maintenance policies based on statistical analysis and special techniques, like vibration analysis, oil and lube analysis for critical equipment. Process control strategies have also been installed in several metallurgical sites. These control strategies require instrumentation maintenance from local personnel. The availability of real time and process history to identify the most critical part of the processing system from mechanical integrity is a must for global plant optimization. Specialized performance control monitoring algorithms are required to justify their existence and contribution to the bottom line. Emerging technologies are combining these techniques into a single total plant system. Tools are required to assist in troubleshooting and adapting these process control instruments and strategies. The key is the plant equipment and process control availability and utilization rather than just maintenance.

Many of the trace elements found in coal are associated with mineral matter, making it possible to remove them by physical coal cleaning. As part of work funded by the Electric Power Research Institute, both conventional and advanced coal cleaning processes were found to provide large reductions in the concentration of many trace elements that, if released into the atmosphere, are considered to be potentially toxic or environmentally harmful. Advanced physical cleaning technologies appear to provide greater reductions than conventional technologies. Chemical cleaning processes may also remove many trace elements, possibly including organically-bound elements such as beryllium. Care must be taken in the disposal of coal cleaning plant refuse because oxidation and leaching of this material can create highly acidic leachate and many trace elements are mobile in an acid environment. Laboratory leaching procedures are potentially useful in determining the degree of risk of water contamination by trace elements should an acid environment form.
