In this paper the phrase "exploration for blind metal deposits" refers to exploration activities geared to the discovery of metal deposits which cannot be located by visual surface inspection. The word "system" refers to all of the components (people, money, corporations, techniques, etc.) which collectively result in an exploration process. The details of the system or systems which I have employed in exploration will not be discussed because of client relationships. However, some of the more severe problems in exploration result from how the system's components interact and our attitudes as to what exploration data is telling us, if anything. It is these items which will be discussed. Exploration for blind metal deposits, which has been relatively intense over the last 2S years compared to rather minor outlays prior to World War II has often been an uncoordinated assortment of various specialists employing various techniques (see Dickerson -1). In a program geared to the location of blind deposits, the lack of outcropping deposits or occurrences should not be a deterrent to a well conceived and well planned program. The severe cyclical swings in exploration activity, although often coinciding with depressed metal prices, by and large result from the failure of exploration operators to present a coherent and realistic program to management. It is my opinion that the stream of complaints criticizing management for cyclical exploration support are mostly unwarranted, as many of the programs and goals are ill defined. Although depressed market conditions may serve as the catalyst for exploration cuts, the underlying cause is that when the "chips are down", the non-directional, non-specific nature of many programs is revealed. Thus management should not be castigated for eliminating such programs during bad times, but rather they should be castigated for supporting them during boom periods.

The effect of anions such as sulfate, chloride, and nitrate on the solubility of rare earth element-bearing phosphates and fluorocarbonates has been examined using relevant thermodynamic data. The study has found that these anions have significant influences on the overall dissolution of rare earth elements (REEs) from various sources in the aqueous media. The thermodynamic calculations in this study have indicated that the speciation of REEs with the anions tends to increase the overall solubility of the REE-bearing minerals. However, in some cases, strong precipitation of REEs with some of these anions causes an adverse effect on the solubility of these elements. It has been found that sulfate ion has the most pronounced effect on the solubility compared to nitrate and chloride, in which the latter two acids exhibited almost identical results. The calculated results have indicated that REE-oxide (hydrated) is the easiest compound to dissolve, followed by carbonate, phosphate, fluoride, sulfate, fluoro-carbonate, and oxalate in that order.

The stresses in the materials surrounding an underground opening are dependent upon the virgin stress field, the geometry of the opening and changes in boundary conditions as mining progresses. For most underground openings especially in coal mines, roof bolts are installed to help stabilize the opening. While most parameters in roof bolt design and installation have been thoroughly investigated, the effects of the initial stress field on the effectiveness of roof bolts have not been recognized. This paper summarizes the results of investigation of the effect of the initial stress field on the performance of mine roof bolts. Roof bolt installations are duplicated in the laboratory utilizing conventional roof bolt frame, commercial roof bolts and shells, mine torque wrench and encapsulated rock specimens for anchorage. A special and primary feature of the laboratory set-up is the addition of a loading system for generating stresses at the anchorage specimens. For this preliminary study, different levels of hydrostatic stress fields were induced at the anchorage specimen, instrumented roof bolts were installed in the usual manner, and the bolt load loss-with-time observed. Statistical analysis of data showed that the stress field at the anchorage horizon has a considerable influence on the performance of mine roof bolts, i.e. the higher the stress field, the higher the anchorage efficiency. From this observation, methods of improving the performance of mine roof bolts utilizing new shell designs and methods of installing them are suggested.

I am Alfred E. Michon, Vice President- International for Burlington Northern Inc. I work for BN's holding company and my responsibilities include co-ordinating the activities of our eight subsidiary companies as they relate to international commerce--an increasingly important aspect of the overall business of our company. Until last April, I was President of the Fort Worth and Denver and Colorado and Southern railroads, subsidiaries of BN. Prior to that, I headed the marketing and pricing area of BN's coal transportation business. Based on my experience in the energy industry, both domestic and international, I would like to discuss the world-wide trend towards the reliance on low-sulfur coal in lieu of natural gas and oil for the generation of electricity. Since pontification on the energy scene world- wide is best left to consultants with scenario-spitting computers, let me in- stead emphasize this trend through two examples. First I will describe the regulatory and economic factors which have encouraged the replacement of natural gas by low sulfur coal as a boiler fuel in the US. BN's investments in track and equipment were instrumental in this conversion. Secondly, I will show how this same combination of factors has created a large demand for steam coal in the Far East. Again, our company's strategy is to facilitate conversion to coal overseas through timely and sufficient investments.

Mechanical mining holds great promise for the mining industry. Realizing this promise depends on giving mine operators the capability to evaluate the higher production, the lower costs, and safety enhancement that comes with mechanical mining. The opportunities for low cost and high production must outset the high capital costs associated with mechanical excavation. Giving the mining industry the tools to effectively evaluate and successfully implement mechanical methods defines the challenges and directions of the mechanical mining industry.

"Surface settlement adjacent to sensitive structures is a challenging issue in the tunnel engineering. In this study, 3D simulation of TBM excavation has been performed with the FLAC3D code and then the results compared with real monitoring data. Sensitivity analysis was carried out for all parameters affecting the surface settlement, such as the tail void grouting pressure (Pt), the face pressure (Pf), the tunnel diameter (D), overburden (q), shield thickness (t) and the length of the shield (L). The results show that the face pressure, tail void grouting and tunnel diameter have a considerable effect on the maximum ground displacement.In this paper, the monitoring data from Mashhad Metro was used to verify the numerical simulation. Data monitoring for about 47 sections between A2 and D2 stations was selected and a multiple regression analysis was performed. Based on this analysis, an empirical relationship was obtained for the coefficient of regression relationship which confirmed the sensitivity analysis.INTRODUCTIONThe surface settlement due to tunnel excavation is a complex issue, since the surface displacement is a function of several parameters that they are related to the excavation method, soil characteristics and TBM elements. Prediction of deformation is a very important issue, especially in urban areas, since these displacements may be affected the superficial structures. In recent studies, one of the most popular empirical relationships that is used to predict the surface displacement has gussian curve that it was suggested by Peck [1, 2]. An analytical relationship was proposed by Chow that its base assume was isotropic of soil, that surface settlement can be estimated based on the tunnel geometry and the shear modulus(G) [3]. Besides these methods numerical approaches such as the Finite Element Method (FEM) and the Finite Difference Method (FDM) have been used over the last twenty years, since numerical modeling has a high capability to simulation a complex soil conditions and irregular geometry [4]. In this study, all aspects of the EPB-TBM on Mashad Metro Line 2 were modeled and the most important influences on surface displacement in urban areas were determined [1, 3]."

Current over-capacity in coal production provides assured and relatively low-cost supplies to coal importers. At the same time, it is of serious concern to coal producers who invested considerable sums in the expectation that overseas demand would continue to grow rapidly. This paper assesses the reserves available for export, the export facilities, the coal supplies which can be put through them, and the market prospects for the future. It assumes, rightly or wrongly, that there will be no major and prolonged disruptions in supply from any major sources of coal. COAL RESERVES FOR EXPORT Economically recoverable reserves in the non-communist world amount to about 470 billion tonnes. These are sufficient to sustain current production levels of 2 billion tonnes a year for 235 years.

Sensors are everywhere in the mining industry, with sensor information being used to monitor and operate processes. Therefore, when sensor information is wrong, economic losses can occur. Unfortunately, sensor errors are usually not detected till they become large. This is problematic as most calibrate their sensors no more than once a year (Beamex, n.d.). Using principles of data mining, where all relevant information is tapped to glean hidden information, Pothina [8] designed an algorithm to detect errors in temperature sensors in gold stripping circuit in Pogo mine, Alaska. This paper continued his work by analyzing the behavior of the algorithm on baseline data and testing the algorithm in new data and under more rigorous conditions. It also made a change to the algorithm. The modified algorithm performed very well in the new data. It also worked well under the new error conditions. Three types of errors were seeded, a fixed additive error (+ 2%), a fixed subtractive error (− 2%), and a noisy, normally distributed error, with a mean value of + 2%. Artificially seeded errors were detected within about 20 gold stripping cycles. Inherent bias in operation impacted algorithm performance by increasing the number of cycles needed to detect errors. This paper reinforced Pothina’s [8] conclusion that when data mining approach is used, sensor errors can be detected even when they are pretty low. Significant economic losses can thus be minimized.

Once exploration is complete, "winning" of the ore can be viewed as fundamentally a bulk handling proposition. Whether it is to strip, break, size, extract, load, haul, or even process, the success of each of these phases will depend upon how effectively one can utilize-the methods and tools that are available in bulk handling. Since as much as 30 to 60% of the total delivered price of raw materials can be attributed to handling and shipping (ref. 1), this expenditure may spell the success or failure of an entire mining venture. In fact, it has become increasingly evident that handling and shipping are so intimately associated with mining that only when they are duly considered throughout the mine-to -smelter master plan as an integral part of a total system can an optimum operation be expected and the most economical ton of ore obtained, this total systems approach should not only take in handling and haulage in and out of the mine, but also storage and transfer at the terminals (ref. 2,3,t), including ship and barge loading and unloading which are likewise a major consideration (ref. 5). Much has been developed during the past century in bulk handling, particularly in its expanding use in the mining industry. In view of the major role bulk handling has played and will continue to play in mining, in commemorating AIME's centennial, this paper will attempt to outline the state-of-the-art at this three-quarter point of the 20th century - one that is marked by its industrial revolution and rapidly accelerating technological advances. The Atlantic City iron mine is located in Fremont County in central Wyoming, near the historic gold mining camps of Atlantic City and South Pass City. The mine lies on the southeast flank of the Wind River Mountains at an elevation of about 2,470 m (8,100 ft) above sea level (Fig. 1). An 81-h M2 (200-acre) tailings impoundment at the Atlantic City taconite operation has been a source of blowing dust. The site qualified for reclamation under Wyoming&apos;s Abandoned Mine Land (AML) reclamation program. The ultimate reclamation construction incorporated commercially available organic amendments and fertilizers into a 300-mm- (12-in.-) thick cap of a sterile clay loam cover material. The water level was lowered in an adjacent flooded mine pit that was feeding uncontrolled seeps into the tailings basin. A wide tailings pond spillway was built that allows flood control while minimizing seasonal water-level fluctuations in the pond. Rock berms and rock snow fences were built for wind-erosion control and soil-moisture preservation. Future work includes tree planting in the protective wind/ snow shadows of rock berms and rock snow fences and plugging a decant pipe. US Steel opened the Atlantic City iron mine in August 1962. It closed in 1983. Taconite iron ore was mined by surface methods. The ore was magnetically separated from the waste. The magnetic concentrate was mixed with bentonite, formed into pellets and roasted to produce a blast furnace feed stock for US Steel&apos;s blast furnaces in Geneva, UT. The pellets were hauled by rail to the Geneva Iron Works. The Atlantic City Mine produced three types of wastes. These included waste rock overburden from mining, a coarse-grained (sand to small-gravel sized), nonmagnetic reject rock termed "cobbs" and fine-grained tailings ranging from 600 to 75 µm (28 to <200 mesh). Exploration for ore deposits in southeastern Missouri in the 1950&apos;s resulted in the important discovery of lead, zinc, copper and silver in 1955. Further discoveries in the area led to the naming of the Viburnum trend. It has sometimes been referred to as the "New Lead belt" to distinguish it from older lead-producing areas to the east. As presently developed, the "trend" is 35 miles long, running north and south about 50 miles west of the Lead belt. Galena (lead) is the principal ore mined, with lesser quantities of sphalerite (zinc), chalcopyrite (copper) and silver recovered as economic by-products. The ore body is as much as 140 feet thick and 1,200 feet wide, and is found in the Bonneterre Dolomite (Upper Cambrian) at depths ranging from 700 to 1,200 feet. Since its discovery many companies have engaged in exploration and several major companies have developed new mines and constructed mills and a smelter in the area. The first mine in the Viburnum trend came on stream in 1960, but as more mines came on stream and others reached capacity, lead production increased to the point that the Southeast Missouri Lead district produced 432,576 tons of lead in 1970 to become the world&apos;s largest lead-producing region (Missouri Geological Survey and Water Resources, 1971). The Viburnum trend area with its rolling, heavily forested hills and numerous clear running streams is in the Clark National Forest of the Missouri Ozarks. Until the recent development of its mineral resources, the area was sparsely populated and nearly unmarked by the activities of man. "Preventing machine-related injuries is one of the major safety concerns in underground coal mines. Severe injuries and fatalities occur when a miner is struck, crushed, or pinned by mining equipment such as a continuous mining machine (CMM), shuttle car, or a scoop. Proximity detection systems (PDSs) have been applied in mining to reduce these types of injuries and fatalities. All of the PDSs that are currently approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for use in underground coal mines are magnetic-field based and could be affected by metallic objects such as trailing cables. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) investigated the influence of trailing cables on the performance of PDSs. In particular, the magnetic field coupled from proximity system generators to a de-energized trailing cable were characterized. The results show that significant energy can be coupled from the proximity system generators to a trailing cable when there is a closed loop in the cable. The effect on PDS performance from the magnetic field radiated around an energized trailing cable was also quantified for different current amplitudes in the cable. It is shown that the magnetic field caused by the electric current in the trailing cable mainly consists of a 60-Hz signal and its harmonics which cause little interference to the PDS. The results presented in this paper can help PDS manufacturers to design better systems that are more immune to these effects. INTRODUCTION An average of 250 injuries occur every year during operation of Continuous mining machines (CMMs), and 43 miners have been killed by striking or pinning accidents involving CMMs in the U.S. from 1984 to 2015 (Mine Safety and Health Administration, 2015). In addition, there have been 10 fatal accidents involving mobile haulage equipped with trailing cables from 2000 to 2015 (Noll et al., 2017). In response to these fatalities and injuries the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) promulgated a regulation in 2015 requiring the use of a proximity detection system (PDS) on all CMMs except full-face machines and proposed a regulation in 2016 which would require a PDS on other mobile underground equipment. Current PDSs approved for underground use are magnetic-field based. The PDS contains machine-mounted magnetic field generators that create fields around the machine. The other part of the PDS is a miner-wearable component (MWC) that reads the flux density of the generators. These systems use the magnetic field strength readings from the MWC to determine whether a miner is at a safe distance from the machine. A stable magnetic field is essential for the accuracy of the system."

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has entered into a $l.5 million Cooperative Agreement with Alpine Equipment Corporation/Astro International Corporation ("Alpine") of State College, Pennsylvania, for the evaluation of water-jet-assisted (WJA) mechanical cutting of oil shale under actual mining conditions. A commercial-sized, heavy WJA mechanical miner is being assembled based upon the successful "factory testing" of a smaller prototype miner utilizing standard tungsten-carbide and Polycrystalline Diamond Composite (POC) bits in large oil shale boulders. Actual field testing of the machine will be conducted in an oil shale mine located in the Piceance Basin of Western Colorado. In-mine logistical support is being provided by several oil shale companies through the Colorado Mining Association (CMA) and the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM).

The Northeast Boundary Tunnel Project consists of a 23 ft diameter, 27,000 ft long, CSO tunnel, multiple underground connections, and significant surface works within an urban corridor. The NEBT alignment depths range from 60 to 140 ft and includes seven shafts ranging in depth from 77 to 155 ft with diameters varying from about 19.5 to 56 ft, some as in-line connections and others required adits for connection to the main tunnel. This paper focuses on the design and construction of two major underground connections which are the First Street Connector Tunnel and the Mount Olivet Road Diversion Sewer.

"In December 2011, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia, the U.S. Department of Justice, Alpha Natural Resources (ANR) and Alpha Appalachia Holdings entered into a nonprosecution agreement related to the explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine (UBB) that killed 29 miners. This coal operation was owned by Performance Coal Co., an affiliate of Massey Energy Co., which was acquired by ANR in June 2011, more than a year after the UBB explosion. Pursuant to the agreement, ANR agreed to:• Establish a trust within 120 days.• Pay a total of US$48 million into the trust to be used solely to fund and administer research and development (R&D) projects to improve mine health and safety.• Administer the trust by three highly qualified individuals with academic and/or professional backgrounds in mine health and safety.In April 2012, the Alpha Foundation for the Improvement of Mine Safety and Health was created. The three directors - Michael Karmis, president; David Wegman, vice presidenttreasurer, and Keith Heasley, vice presidentsecretary - approved a plan to expend both the interest and principal of the trust, aiming at an 8-10 year research horizon. The foundation also appointed David Belden, an experienced manager of nonprofits and professional associations, as the first executive director of the foundation. The IRS approved the foundation’s tax-exempt application, as described in Section 501c(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, on Dec. 18, 2012. The board established guiding principles of the foundation, which are as follows:• Mission: to improve mine health and safety through funding R&D projects to qualified academic institutions and other not-for-profit organizations.• Vision: to enable miners in the future to be free of work related injury or disease by the implementation of the results of the projects funded by the foundation and undertaken by the best researchers from any discipline that can contribute. The foundation is now approaching its third year and regularly posts updates, including semi-annual reports, to its website (www.http.alpha-foundation.org/), which serves as the main medium for communication with the broader stakeholder community"

On April 14, 1975, Consolidation Coal Company began to operate a longwall face in their Shoemaker Mine using shield supports. This was the first time that shield supports were used in the United States (1) 1/. Shortly thereafter, Kaiser Steel Corporation started a shield longwall face at their York Canyon Mine (2). From October 1975 through May 1976, three more longwall faces were commissioned in mines located in south-western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia. In June 1976, four installations had completed their first panel and two installations had completed the subsequent move to the second panel where coal production is now well under way. During this time (April 75 to June 76) the total number of shield support face operating months, including moving time, was 40 and the combined face advance was approx. 17, 000 feet (5200 m) with face lengths varying from 450 - 550 feet (137 - 168 m). While the shield support experience in the U.S. is still limited on the basis of time and mining parameters, the operating results of all faces have been very satisfactory. New record 24 hr production figures were set and - far more important - long term production figures could be sustained on an impressively high level even when taking face moving time into account. The purpose of this paper is to review the performance of shield type supports in the U.S. and to assess their value as longwall supports for U.S. underground mining conditions with regard to roof control, maintenance, operator convenience, safety and productivity.

A study of some variables affecting the recovery of molybdenum from oxidized molybdenum minerals was made. The effects of variations in contact time, temperature, pulp density, particle size, and solvent concentration on the recovery of molybdenum using acid and alkaline solvents were investigated. Chemical analyses, screen analyses and microscopic examinations were made and the presence of important elements determined. A hydrometallurgical method was developed to recover the molybdenum from the oxidized molybdenum ore by simultaneous dissolution of the molybdenum with sulfuric acid, adsorption on activated charcoal and flotation of the charcoal. The molybdenum was extracted from the activated charcoal with sodium hydroxide, precipitated with calcium hydroxide as calcium molybdate and this regenerated sodium hydroxide for additional stripping. A solvent extraction method, using mines, was also studied to recover molybdenum from both alkaline and acid molybdenum solutions. Satisfactory results were obtained.

Until the past decade, the energy-size reduction relationship was the dominant form of mathematical model used in the description of tumbling mill grinding processes (1,2). Typically, in these models some single measure of product fineness (e.g. the 80% passing size, the size modules, the specific surface area) is chosen as the dependent variable and the energy input per unit mass of material being ground acts as the independent variable. In some instances these models have been useful for the correlation of experimental data, but, invariably, they have been found to be inadequate for meaningful process simulation. During the last decade considerable advances have been made in the development of phenomenological grinding models derived from population balance considerations (3-7). In these models a set of dependent variables is employed, corresponding to the set of mass fractions which constitute the product size distribution, and energy input is abandoned in favor of "time in the mill" as the independent variable. The phenomenological models have been shown to provide accurate simulations of the entire size distribution of ground products produced in batch (8-10), locked cycle(11)and steady and unsteady state, open and closed circuit continuous grinding(12,13).

"Maceral separation is one possible technique to expand coking coal resources, either by increasing the blending ratio of non- or slightly caking coal or rationally utilizing the coking coal according to the different behaviors of macerals in coking. The success of maceral enrichment for a given coal using flotation is dependent on the differences in flotation kinetic rate among macerals. This paper presents the flotation rates and zeta potentials of the vitrinite-rich and inertiniterich maceral concentrates obtained from six coal samples of different ranks – from high-volatile B bituminous coal with mean random vitrinite reflectance (Rrandom) of 0.64 percent to low-volatile bituminous coal with Rrandom of 1.73 percent – using a float-sink procedure. The flotation results show that vitrinite-rich concentrates can be produced in tap water using froth flotation only with frother for the high-volatile B and A bituminous coal samples, but there was no good performance for the high-volatile C bituminous and medium- to low-volatile bituminous coal samples. The zeta potential results show that froth flotation could probably separate the high-volatile C bituminous coal samples well by adjusting pH, but there was no good performance for the higher-rank coal samples. IntroductionMetallurgical coke is used in blast furnaces for steel production and is produced by the carbonization of coking coal. Because caking coals are rare and expensive, they are often blended with non- or slightly caking coals. Considering the tight supply-demand situation for coking coal in China, it is important and urgent to develop highly efficient technologies for rationally utilizing and expanding coking coal resources (Mochizuki et al., 2013)."
