Commodity price down cycles are a fact of life in the mining industry. And companies pre-pare for them as best they can. Evenso, operations are still curtailed or closed during those cycles, profits shrink, layoffs are inevitable and many companies do not survive. However, one of the few good things that occurs during down cycles is the new, innovative exploration, mining and processing technologies that come about during hard times. To survive the lean times, the mining industry turns to improved technology to decrease costs and hold the bottom line. And, because mining is a cyclical business, each down cycle brings about technology improvements that carry over into the good times.

The wetting characteristics and water film stability at the talc surface have been studied, particularly the effect of polysaccharides such as guar gum, starch, and dextrin. Talc is a gangue mineral in the flotation of base metal sulfide ores, precious metal sulfide ores, and platinum group metal (PGM) sulfide ores. Talc surfaces were investigated using surface analysis techniques including atomic force microscopy, high-speed video bubble attachment measurements, and wetting film stability measurements using a synchronized tri-wavelength reflection interferometry microscope (STRIM). In the presence of polysaccharides, there is a significant increase in bubble attachment time at the talc surface, but only a slight change in contact angle, which suggests that polysaccharide depression of talc is due primarily to the slow rate of bubble attachment and not due to a change in contact angle. The critical rupture thickness (hc) for a hydrophobic talc surface was found to be 56 nm, while the hydrophilic phlogopite surface of similar structure has an equilibrium film thickness (he) of 25 nm. At low polysaccharide concentrations, the wetting films formed on the talc surfaces were unstable, but at high concentrations the wetting films became stable with similar thickness values as the critical rupture thickness, and bubble attachment did not occur. However, it was found that the critical and equilibrium film thickness values do not change significantly with the polysaccharide type or concentration. The results from this research help us understand further details of film rupture and displacement during bubble attachment.

In order to better understand the effects of longwall mining on the methane reservoir overlying the panel, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health/Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (NIOSH/PRL) designed and implemented a vertical borehole monitoring experiment (BME) on an active longwall panel. The mine operates in the Pittsburgh Coalbed in Greene County, Pennsylvania. The BME site was located away from either end of the panel to avoid mechanical influences caused by the draping of overburden in this region and was positioned at the same distance from the tailgate gateroad as the mine?s gob gas venthole sites. The borehole drilling depths and monitoring intervals were chosen to address a different stratigraphic zone in each of the three planned holes. The monitoring boreholes were positioned perpendicular to face advance using a close spacing pattern of about 15 m (50 ft) between collars. Boreholes were instrumented downhole and on the surface for various measurements. It was observed from the field data that the gob gas venthole fracture network formed 24-46 m (80-150 ft) ahead of the mining face. Overburden permeability?s within the same test zones increased 100 to 500 times following undermining. The borehole test interval within the fractured rock responded to overburden gas pressure while the test interval in the caved zone responded to mine ventilation conditions. Eight months after the boreholes were undermined, slug testing indicated permeabilities had increased further in the fractured rock zone. Measurements of surface movement indicate that the permeability development observed in the boreholes is a product of vertical subsidence without lateral movement within the tensional rock mechanics zone on a supercritical longwall panel. Results from this study suggest that maximum permeability in the longwall panel overburden is achieved 58 to 190 m (190 to 620 ft) behind the longwall following maximum compaction of the overburden.

The performance of the grinding circuit, from the initial stages of operation to the present, is discussed. The mill efficiency as measured by the Bond grindability data and the operating work index is presented. The objective has been to produce a sand cyclone overflow containing not more than 6% +65 mesh. However, this has never been attained even at low milling rates. On the other hand, significant improvements in throughput were achieved by instituting some equipment changes and process modifications within the grinding circuit. The latest approach to solving the coarse grind problem is also discussed.

Ground movements associated with high extraction underground coal mining, such as pillar retreat and longwall, are some- times large enough to disrupt the ground water regime as well as damage buildings and other surface structures. A U.S. Department of Energy Bureau of Mines- sponsored subsidence study at Kitt Energy Corporation's Kitt No. 1 Mine near Philippi (Barbour County) , West Virginia has provided an opportunity to monitor the ground water response above a mine panel during both developmental and pillar re- treat mining. Findings concerning ground water effects presented in this paper indicate that total extraction mining produced significant water level declines in deep-lying strata but had little effect on water levels at shallower depths. Post-mining values of hydraulic conductivity were typically somewhat higher than pre-mining values. Changes in water chemistry associated with mining were not sufficient to render the water unfit for human consumption.

Amphiboles are hydrated mineral silicates five of which occur in asbestiform habits as asbestos grunerite (amosite) asbestos, riebeckite (crocidolite) asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, tremolite asbestos and actinolite asbestos] and non-asbestiform habits (grunerite, riebeckite, anthophyllite, tremolite and actinolite). The asbestiform varieties are characterized by long, thin fibers while non-asbestiform varieties such as cleavage fragments form short fibers with larger widths. The U.S. regulatory method for counting asbestos fibers (aspect ratio [>]3:1, length [>]5 µm) does not distinguish between asbestos and cleavage fragments. The method biases toward increased counts of non-asbestiform cleavage fragments compared to long, thin asbestos fibers. One consequence of this regulatory approach is that workers can be erroneously classified as exposed to concentrations of asbestos (asbestiform amphiboles) above the U.S. 0.1 f/mL exposure standard when in fact they are not exposed to asbestos at all but non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments. Another consequence is that the known carcinogenic effects of asbestos may be falsely attributed to non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments of the same mineral. The purpose of this review is to assess whether amphibole cleavage fragments pose the same risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma characteristic of amphibole asbestos fibers. We identified three groups of workers exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles: two groups exposed to grunerite (Homestake gold miners and taconite miners) and one group exposed to industrial talc containing non-asbestiform tremolite and anthophyllite in St. Lawrence County, NY. In addition to assessing strength of association and exposure?response trends in the non-asbestiform amphibole cohorts, comparisons were also made with cohorts exposed to the asbestiform counterpart (positive control) and cohorts exposed to the mineral (e.g. talc) that does not contain amphiboles (negative controls). The cohorts exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles had no excesses of lung cancer or mesothelioma. Similar results were observed in the negative control groups, in stark contrast to the excess risks of asbestos-related disease found in the asbestos cohorts. The only possible exception is the twofold increased risk of lung cancer where exposure was to industrial talc containing cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite. However, this risk is not considered attributable to the talc or amphibole cleavage fragments for several reasons. A similar increased risk of lung cancer was found in Vermont talc workers, studied in the same time period. Their exposure was to relatively pure talc. There was no relationship between lung cancer mortality and exposure measured as mg/m3 years and years worked. A case?control study reported that all the lung cancer cases were smokers (or former smokers) and attributed the excess to smoking. There were two mesothelioma cases among the NY State talc workers exposed to cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite, but talc is not a plausible cause because of too short latency and potential for previous asbestos exposure. The positive controls of tremolite asbestos and anthophyllite asbestos exposed workers showed excess risks of both lung cancer and mesothelioma and positive exposure? response trends. St. Lawrence, NY talc does not produce mesotheliomas in animals while amphibole asbestos does. In sum, the weight of evidence fully supports a conclusion that non-asbestiform amphiboles do not increase the risk of lung cancer or mesothelioma. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. Dressed in black tie and Victorian attire, some 200 people came to Leadville, CO, for a September weekend featuring a National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHF&M) induction banquet and a scenic mountain train trip to Fremont Pass and the Climax Mine. The 18th annual induction banquet on Sept. 17 began with cocktails and a open house. It was a chance for visitors to tour the National Mining Museum including the new Hennebach Wing, opened in February. The new wing is named in honor of Ralph Hennebach, retired chairman of Asarco. Formerly Leadville Junior High School, the Hennebach Wing encompasses more than1,440 m2 (15,500 sq ft) of floor space in two stories. One prominent feature is a 1923 Wills Sainte Claire touring sedan. Climax Molybdenum donated this first all-molybdenum steel motorcar. Docents were available throughout the museum to give banquet attendees directions and answer questions.

NIOSH and the Illinois Clean Coal Institute are funding studies on characterization of coal and quartz dust in Interior Basin mines since 2009. Coal dust characteristics vary significantly and, are vital for the development of the engineering controls. This paper presents wettability characteristics of coal dust with respect to its chemical and physical properties, since wettability is considered to be a primary dust control technique. Particle size distribution, inter-particle interactions during wetting and quartz associations with organic and inorganic matter in coal seams is critical for understanding wetting phenomena. Silica content in the un-wetted fractions was found to be very high during wetting tests. Wetting of quartz may be limited by its association to hydrophobic materials as well as buoyancy forces resulting from particle size characteristics and particle-particle interaction in the wetting agent. Temperature of the wetting solution and effective contact time between dust particles and water droplets are found to be two important variables affecting the wettability. The characterization data obtained from this study can be utilized to develop engineering controls.

According to the previous research, it is found that the thickness of cover is mostly less than 100 m for highwall mining system. However, for most of the Chinese surface coal mines, the mining depth is over 150 m; on the other hand, the shovel-truck is the most common mining technology. As a result, a lot of residual coal will be remained around end-walls. Considering these facts, the calculated methodology of highwall mining system under thick cover is presented in this paper. Meanwhile, numerical simulation of highwall mining system under thick cover was carried out. The outcome shows that the calculated methodology for pillar stability of highwall mining system under thick cover presented in this paper is acceptable. In other words, the highwall mining system is feasible to extract the residual coal around end-walls in Chinese surface coal mines. Thus, not only coal recovery ratio can be improved, but also can increase the production life of surface coal mines in China.

The paper describes the main drive systems of an iron ore pelletizing plant and related important design aspects. It is shown how today?s drive systems provide the desired flexibility for the process and lead to high energy efficiency and system reliability. With respect to electric drives expansion projects have many technical issues in common with green-field installations. However, there are aspects where important, distinct differences occur. It is shown which considerations for selecting and sizing drive systems for such a plant as well as for integrating them into an overall plant control concept need to be taken into account. Besides the design of the drive systems a key aspect for such an expansion project is the network interaction. Harmonics levels at different points in the plant network need to be checked carefully with simulations during the design phase to avoid problems later-on during operation. The power factor compensation and the harmonic filtering of the new production line cannot be designed independently of the already existing plant. The paper highlights areas where problems could occur and which points need to be paid attention to when a plant is expanded.

The rapid increase of P2O5 use for food, biofuels, and LiFePO4 batteries etc. accelerates the depletion rate of phosphate reserves. In the phosphate industry, a significant amount of ultrafine phosphate has been discarded as slime tailing due to processing difficulties. The major problems associated with ultrafine particle flotation are low probability of bubble-particle collision and adhesion, and high probability of unwanted gangue particles entrainment. This paper investigates the enhanced ultrafine phosphate particle flotation probability by Eriez’ CavTube generated fine/ ultrafine bubbles and the improved flotation selectivity by wash water etc. Ultrafine phosphates with various gangue minerals of quartz/muscovite, calcite/dolomite, and iron/ silica were studied. Microscopic observations show that the entrained ultrafine gangue minerals can be minimized by using wash water in column flotation. A three-factor threelevel central composite experimental design was conducted for ultrafine phosphate flotation. For comparison, both benchtop mechanical cell and laboratory column flotation tests were performed at their optimal respective flotation conditions. Using Eriez CavTube column flotation technology for Industries Chimiques du Senegal (ICS) ultrafine slime tailings, a concentrate grade of 36.0% P2O5, was achieved at 89.4% P2O5 recovery. Improved flotation performance was achieved using column flotation as compared to benchtop mechanical cell flotation. The benefits of Eriez’ column flotation technology realized from this study include the high P2O5 grade and recovery.

The Red Dog zinc-lead-silver deposit is located in the DeLong Mountains of the western Brooks Range in northwest Alaska. The region is located 145 km(90 miles) north of the village of Kotzebue (Fig. 1).Red Dog’s current resource base is 143 Mt (157 million st) averaging 16.1% zinc, 4.3% lead and 83g/t (2.4 oz/st) silver. It is contained in four structurally separate deposits— the Hilltop, Main Deposit, Aqqaluk and the newly discovered Paalaaq deposit. Recent exploration for the Aqqaluk and the Paalaaq deposits has contributed to Cominco American’s understanding of the detailed structural geology of the district and its role in the placement of individual ore bodies.

When defining a ?megaproject,? one need only to look at Seattle, WA?s State Route 99 Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement project. This $3.1-billion project is one of the largest of its kind in the world, and includes the use of the world?s largest tunnel boring machine (TBM). However, for as large as the Alaskan Way project is ? especially given the size of the TBM being used ? there are several other megaprojects underway around the world. Each has its own challenges that require innovative design techniques and financing arrangements, as well as variations on established tunneling technologies. So it was that 266 tunneling and underground construction professionals ? owners, contractors and engineers ? convened in Seattle in November for the Cutting Edge Conference on Megaprojects. This was the second joint meeting between the Underground Construction Association of SME and the North American Tunneling Journal. The first joint conference took place in April 2012 in Miami, FL and attracted 238 attendees. A third joint conference, to be held in 2014, is in the planning stage. The key reason Seattle was chosen as the site of the megaprojects conference is the Alaskan Way Viaduct project. Before the conference began, many of the attendees were able to visit the project and get a close look at Bertha, the Hitachi Zosen earth pressure balance TBM that is boring the tunnel. In addition, the conference included an exhibit that attracted 20 industry suppliers, up from 10 the previous year in Miami. The 25 presentations during the two-day conference covered all aspects of the tunneling and underground construction of megaprojects. Topics included the Alaskan Way Viaduct project; considerations for procurement and contracting; political risk, financing and insurance; international megaprojects; risk and risk sharing and project delivery. Each session concluded with panel discussions.

A study was undertaken to determine the effect of five industrial frothers on the relationship between entrainment recovery and water recovery. The experiments were conducted using a Batequip rectangular 60 liter steel cell which was run in parallel with the first cell in a copper/silver prefloat rougher circuit. The concentration of the frothers ranged from 2.5 g/ton to 8.4 g/ton. The experiments were repeated at three different froth depths. A power function was found to fit this relationship with no discontinuity in the relationship caused by the changes in frother type and concentration and froth depth.

Passive seismic imaging is applied in underground mining to analyze the stress redistribution after the occurrence of a major seismic event. The velocity model is established to be utilized in velocity inversion. By comparing the images from velocity tomography on two different time scales, the average velocity of a mining area decreases significantly after the major event. It is highly likely that the stored energy level drops due to the occurrence of a major event. Also, total energy stored in micro-seismic events for each day is summed up and the energy change trend is plotted to illustrate the correlation of energy with a major event.

As most mining companies are taking advantage of the high market prices for base metals such as steel, copper and zinc, numerous challenges still face them. While demand is strong from countries like China and the United States, demand is still mixed in Europe. This leads to the question of how long these high prices and overall high global demand will last. The tremendous market prices of most precious and base metals have enabled many companies to pay down a significant amount of debt accrued during acquisition and capital expenditure phases. Additionally, mining companies have been able to internally fund and engage in large projects to address future growth, (Less, 2006), thus maximizing the performance of the existing asset base, driving maintenance costs down, and improving and empowering the work-force (Mining Journal, 2006). Market prices and general efficiency gains have addressed these issues to some extent. However, critical issues still face operating managers in the mineral pro-cessing side of the industry. Energy prices, for example, continue to have a negative impact on cash costs for producing an ounce of gold or ton of a given base metal (Cummins, 2003).

The study evaluates the hydrological behaviour of exposed and covered waste rock dumps. The objectives were to determine the major factors influencing unsaturated flow in waste rock dumps and covers, and to improve the in-situ, laboratory and numerical modeling characterization methods. Using material properties obtained from in-situ and laboratory tests, waste rock dumps of different configurations, with and without covers, were modeled. It was found that a properly designed “Store, divert and release” (SDR) cover allows most of the water to be diverted downslope and discharged outside of the waste rock dumps. The SDR cover seems to work efficiently even in extreme storm events. The numerical modeling results show that the unsaturated hydraulic properties (e.g. air entry value and water entry value) of the materials largely control the infiltration of water into waste rock dumps.

INTRODUCTION The Brightwater conveyance system project in King County, Washington consists of constructing about 21 km (13 mile) of effluent and combined influent and effluent tunnels. The influent tunnels will collect sanitary sewerage from the service area and convey it to the new wastewater treatment plant (WTP) site at Route 9 in Woodinville, Snohomish County, Washington. The effluent tunnels will convey treated effluent from the WTP to an outfall at Puget Sound. The tunnels will be constructed primarily under residential areas, busy suburban roads and state highways. This 21 Km (13-mile) soft ground tunneling project faced many design challenges because of the geologic and hydrostatic conditions, long tunnel reaches, and large overburden depths. Boring depths typically varied from 45.7 M (150 ft) to 114 M(375 ft) with a maximum depth of 185.6 M (566 ft) deep. Conventional empirical methods for non-mountain terrain based on a 1:1 ratio of drilled footage per foot of tunnel bore (National Research Council, 1984) for evenly spaced borings provided a good start for the Phase 1 explorations. However a continuation of this approach with closer spacing was deemed inadequate by the geotechnical team for efficiently allocating geotechnical exploration resources for the final design. This paper presents a rational approach that was used to evaluate the value of a particular geotechnical exploration boring, pump test or other in-situ test. The method of analysis, which was initially developed for rock tunnels (Einstein et al., 1978), was modified for the Brightwater project. The method considers the potential construction cost risks resulting from variable geologic conditions, the cost and reliability of the geotechnical exploration and the earned value (cost risk reduction) of performing the geotechnical exploration. In Alaska?s southwest corner, in the Bristol Bay region, 476 holes have been drilled to help define the size of the Pebble Project. The results indicate that the deposit holds close to 32 Mt (72 billion lbs) of copper and 2.9 Gt (94 million oz) of gold. The Pebble Partnership, an Alaskan limited partnership of Anglo American and Northern Dynasty Minerals, owns the project that consists of two world-class mineral deposits. Currently in the prefeasibility and prepermitting stage of development, the Pebble Project is one of the largest and highest profile exploration projects in North America. History The Pebble West Project was originally discovered in 1988 by Cominco (now Teck Cominco). Drilling programs in 1997 defined a near-surface mineral deposit of 1 Gt (1.01 billion st). Minerals found included copper, gold and molybdenum. Northern Dynasty Minerals acquired the property in 2001 and, by 2005, it had confirmed a measured and indicated resource of 4.1 Gt (4.5 billion st) containing 1.2 kt (42.1 million oz) of gold, 11.2 Mt (24.7 billion lbs) of copper and 612 kt (1.35 billion lbs) of molybdenum and additional silver. By September 2005, Pebble East, a deeper, but richer deposit had been found. Drill data by the end of 2005 confirmed a 3.4-Gt (3.7-billion st) inferred resource containing 19 Mt (42.6 billion lbs) of copper, 1.2 Mt (39.6 million oz) of gold and 1.2 Mt (2.7 billion lbs) of molybdenum.
