Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine is located in Papua, Indonesia operated by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) with approximately 1,500m below surface. The ore body extend 1230m width from northwest to southeast by 300–400m length east-west. The mine currently produces at full production of 80,000 tons per day until 2041. Part of the extension of current active production block and mitigation sits 225 m above the production block 1 (PB1) and 2 (PB2A and PB2B) which located in 2590L, named production block#4 (PB4W and PB4E). As the mining continues at PB1N, PB2A, and PB2B, the cave growth vertically and laterally to south perimeter of the footprint affecting the integrity of PB4W/E footprint. Currently, PB1N and PB2N are in active production whilst PB4E development continues from South against PB1N cave, as can be seen in Figure 1. A slight overlapping between PB1E and PB4E intentionally to promote cave connections between the two caves. Despite low stress model in the PB4E near existing caves, the PB4E cave propagation expected by the large strain and will be propagating in tension failure to the PB1E cave. Hence, designing the drill drives edge and first drawbell location as close as possible to the PB1E cave is necessary to guarantee cave connection. Since PB4 footprint development commenced in December 2021, there have been a substantial cave propagation observed from existing downhole monitoring. As the PB4 footprint designed perpendicular to existing DMLZ PB1 cave, adjustment of the development edge design is necessary to reflect the progression the loosening zone propagation to the South. Final life of mine design for extraction, undercut and ventilation level were decided in October 2023 considering latest update cave (fractured/ yielded) boundary. Numerical model of potential rock mass damage also aids the decision to locate the drift edge design. Predicting the cave progression impact is critical to both production at the existing active blocks and development of the new area. The use of cave shape data from year 2021–2023 gives an insight of the cave shape estimation at the end of 2024 when the undercut drift will be developed. This paper presents actual cave growth of active production blocks and its relative vertical progression impact as the result of drawing in order to plan for acceptable rate and provide mitigation once the minimum acceptable rock mass condition and minimum pillar threshold achieved.

The Denali Prospect (147° 08' 20" W, 63° 08' 50" N) is located on the south flank of the Alaska Range in the Clearwater Mountains in south central Alaska. (See Figure 1). The mineralization was discovered in 1963 and surface explora¬tion began the following summer. Surface trenching and diamond drilling were used to locate and sample the mineralized zones. In 1969, an adit totalling approximately 1400 feet was completed. In 1970, a -15% grade decline approximately 1800 feet long was completed. Further diamond drilling was done along with both underground programs. Although much work remains to be done to properly evaluate the prospect, results from all the work to date are quite encouraging. This paper will consider the geology of the prospect and the surrounding area, some- aspects of the geochemistry of the sulfides, and the origin of the sulfide deposits. This paper includes data from this writer's Ph. D. dissertation, "Geology and Geochemistry of the Denali Prospect, Clearwater Mountains Alaska" from the University of Alaska and subsequent work.

Separation of minerals by shape has received little attention, since minerals normally do not break into different shapes during crushing and grinding. However, comminution of consumer wastes generates opportunities for novel separations based on particle shape. For instance, ductile plastics are broken into longer curved shapes, whereas brittle plastics yield angular particles. Using spouting beds for particle separation in water requires controlling the spout's instability. The preferred geometry for such redesigned spouting beds is reported. Plastic cylinders, discs and spheres were separated as a function of rising water velocity and amount of particles in the system. By using 5 mm particles, differences in settling behavior could be video recorded.

The purpose of this study is to develop a mathematical model to describe the oxidation of cyanide with SO2as proposed in the Inco process. This research employed a direct method for measuring the change in cyanide concentration with respect to time as effected by varying concentrations of SO2, copper and pH. Developing this model may be applicable in determining optimum conditions in a process well known and used in the mining industry. It was determined that the reaction is first-order with respect to cyanide, SO2and [Cu+2].The reaction order is 0.15, or zeroth order with respect to [H+] at pH range from 8.0 to 9.5.The activation energy, Ea, is 21.6 kJ/mol. Silver paste including nano sized particles maintains conductivity in high temperatures without forming oxide layers. In the industry, printing process produces wasted silver paste inside the cylinder and on silk-screen. Pyrometallugical silver recycling methods have environmental problems and do not extract pure silver after removing polymer and organic materials during the extraction process. In this study a simple wet process, of recycling the waste silver paste, using ammonia, was conducted. Silver ion extraction yield was increased using oxidant in the ammonia solution. Possible extraction yields, such as pH, concentration, temperature of ammonia, oxidant concentration and the extraction time. The particles that were obtained after the extraction process will be used as porous hydrophobic catalytic and applied to AI mask and hydrophobic ink. NFPA 502, Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges and Other Limited Access Highways establishes minimum fire protection and fire life safety requirements for road tunnels, bridges and other roadways where access by emergency responders is physically limited. The 2008 edition of NFPA 502 represents the Technical Committee?s consensus of current best practice for fire protection and life safety requirements for road tunnels, bridges and similarly limited access highways. Research of national and international test programs, design guidelines and regulating standards was per-formed and considered in an effort to establish a singular, comprehensive document representing a recognized base threshold of fire safety in these type facilities. This paper provides an overview of the more significant revisions including the application of fixed fire suppression systems, guidance on tenable environment, protection of structure and dangerous goods transport.

"The subject of this writing was first published in 1998 with the emphasis on the hardware cost comparison. Other costs, such as the required land area and spatial volume, were mentioned but not emphasized, as these were not deemed as important for new projects where the space was appropriated as required. During the last decade, these other costs have proven to be more than equal in importance. Large volume, highangle conveying by “conveyors with cover belt, dates back to the early 1950s, when such systems were employed at the bucket wheel excavator boom conveyor in German lignite mines to increase the depth of cut without increasing the boom length. Various systems were developed, patented and built. These systems were not a lasting success for various reasons, which are noted by Rasper[1]. In his 1958 “Review of Cover Belt Systems,” Rasper summarizes the characteristics which are worth pursing and those that should be abandoned. The former are akin to good conveyor engineering. The sandwich belt conveyor model. The first sandwich belt conveyor model allowed calculation of the required hugging pressure to develop the bulk material’s internal friction and preclude material slideback. A modern, accurate version of the sandwich belt conveyor model is presented in Fig. 1. This model depicts accurately a derating of the material cross-section allowing an ample belt edge distance that can tolerate normal belt misalignment without material spillage. The calculations must thus recognize that only part of the hugging pressure is imparted onto the material with the remainder transferred belt edge to belt edge affecting a material seal. Mathematical development of the sandwich belt model is covered by Dos Santos and Frizzell in their 1983 article, “Evolution of Sandwich Belt High Angle Conveyors.”"

"Government support for Canada’s mineral industry was on full display during the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) conference in Toronto, ON, Canada on March 3-6. First, there was the announcement of the five-year extension of Canada’s Mineral Exploration Tax Credit (METC), the first multi-year extension of the METC since its inception in 2000. Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, Amarjeet Sohi, added to that support when he spoke at the opening keynote session and announced the Canadian Minerals and Metals Plan (CMMP), a plan that aims to map out the future of the industry in Canada. Finally, the support for the mining industry was buttoned up with a visit to the conference by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.More than 25,000 people from 135 countries attended the annual conference that features a robust trade floor, technical sessions and an investors’ exchange that aims to put mining companies in touch with potential investors. Mining companies and ambassadors from nations around the world are given the opportunity to present to small audiences throughout the conference and this year PDAC was able to sway the Prime Minister to speak on its behalf.Trudeau sat down with PDAC President Glenn Mullan on March 5 to talk about the METC extension and a host of other issues important to the Canadian and global mining industry, giving the home country a bit of a profile advantage when it came to making a pitch to investors.Trudeau entered the week of the conference in the midst of the most serious political scandal of his career and was defending himself against accusations of political interference with the top prosecutor in the land over a criminal case involving one of Canada’s largest companies, SNC-Lavalin. During the question-and-answer session at the Metro Toronto Convention Center, Trudeau seemed more than happy to keep to the discussion about mining. He spoke favorably about the industry during the half hour conversation and praised the industry for its work with Indigenous people as well as its efforts to advance technology and innovation. He made a case that Canada is a safe and reliable place for investment in the minerals sector.“We are at a time of change right now, of transformation with new technologies and global supply chains, and everyone is trying to adjust to the new realities that have accelerated so much these past years,” Trudeau said. “What we are trying to do as a country and what you have done as an industry is to try to look at where things are going – go to where the puck is going to be, not where it is. You, as an industry, know that investments in innovation, research, science — investment in technology and partnerships with Indigenous communities are all things that are going to give you opportunities to be competitive in the coming years.”"

The use of yield index, the product of the yield and gangue rejection, for the optimization of separation processes is presented. The characteristics of the yield index are contrasted with separation efficiency calculations and applied to laboratory froth flotation and washability data. Data from continuous froth flotation tests conducted to "optimize" froth flotation using process optimization software were also evaluated with the yield index procedure.

Although the number of operating longwalls (approximately 100) has remained relatively constant over the last five years, longwall production levels have significantly increased and have in some cases more than doubled. As a result of the increase in production, control of respirable dust continues to be a problem. Therefore, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Pittsburgh Health Technology Center, Dust Division, initiated a study to investigate the availability and adequacy of technology for controlling dust on longwall mining operations. The study involved 23 longwall mining operations in three different Coal Mine Safety and Health Districts. Each operation was visited for a full shift. Respirable dust samples were collected on face personnel and at fixed locations along the face. Parameters in place to control dust were noted with special emphasis being placed on obtaining quantitative data relative to ventilation, headgate dust controls, cutting drum sprays, external machine sprays and cutting sequence. Attempts were made to correlate dust control parameters in place at the time of the visit to dust concentrations measured at the tail, on the tail shearer operator and to the average concentration of dust determined from averaging all the measurements from the occupations sampled. The parameters in place to control dust were also compared to the gamut of technology known to be available to control dust. This paper presents a discussion on the effectiveness of the parameters in place to control dust and on the availability of technology for the control of dust on longwall mining operations.

The Norwegian Lake Tap Method was successfully used to tap into the side of Lake Dorothy 36.5 m (120') below the lake surface. The lake tap allows water to flowinto an access tunnel from the lake lowering the water elevation below its natural out-fall. When the lake reaches a predetermined elevation below the outfall, a 1.5 m (60?) valve in the tunnel will be shut and discharge from Lake Dorothy will stop temporarily allowing construction of a dam located 2.9 km (1.8 miles) downstream at Bart Lake. The lake tap and tunnel were one phase of the $64 million Lake Dorothy Hydroelectric Project, owned and operated by Alaska Electric Light & Power Company (AEL&P), a private utility located in Juneau, AK. The Lake Dorothy portal site and tunnel are located approximately 25.7 km (16 miles) southeast of Juneau, AK, in the remote Tongass National Forest at an elevation of 701 m (2,300') above sea level in the mountains above the Taku Inlet. Thirty degree snow covered mountainsides and limited access by helicopter were just two of the many factors which challenged this unique project. The lake tap and tunnel development consisted of 250 m (820') of horizontal tun-nel, averaging 3.6 m x 3.6 m (12' × 12'), excavated using conventional drill and blast methods in highly competent Granodiorite and Tonalite rock, placement of one 3.9 m (13') long concrete plug, or bulkhead, located at the tunnel midpoint, and one 3 m (10') diameter lake tap into the side of Lake Dorothy. This paper will provide an analysis of the logistical and engineering challenges involved in the development of one of only a handful of lake taps in North America. AEL&P and contractor J. S. Redpath Corporation worked together to complete this critical project phase safely and on schedule, in a location accessible only by helicopter and plagued by constantly changing, harsh weather conditions. A strict schedule had to be maintained to ensure the timely operation of the downstream dam and power plant.

"The Teck Highland Valley copper (THVC) mine is located approximately 55 km (34 miles) southwest of Kamloops and approximately 20 km (12 miles) west of Logan Lake, BC, Canada (Fig. 1). Mining at THVC is conducted at three openpit operations comprised of Valley, Lornex and Highmont with a total annual output on the order of 300 kt (330,000 st) copper concentrate and 5 kt (5,500 st) of molybdenum concentrate. The Phase 8 pushback in the Valley Pit (Fig. 2) was mined from 2011 to 2016. Successful slope steepening occurred in the later stage of the pushback with the implementation of presplit blasting in 2015 and 2016.This article summarizes the investigation and design approach including: structural analysis, kinematic assessments of bench breakback potential, development of discrete fracture networks (DFNs) to characterize discontinuity fabric, rockfall modelling, 2D anisotropic limit equilibrium and 2D distinct element modelling, assessment of potential kinematic failure modes affecting double benches with 3D distinct element modelling and improved blasting techniques using e-dets. THVC is currently undertaking a mine life expansion involving the pushback of the west wall of the Valley Pit above Phase 8 to extend the mine life to 2029. Engineering geologyThe east wall slope in the Valley Pit is comprised of a 350-m (1,148-ft) thick sequence of glacial valley sediments that occur along the Highland Valley (Fig. 2), exposing an overburden slope up to about 225-m (740-ft) high below the crest of the ultimate east wall. The glacial overburden units consist of pro-glacial outwash and glaciofluvial deposits, glacial outwash sands and gravels interbedded with till and alluvial fans consisting of cross-bedded sands and sandy-gravels. Lacustrine sediments occur within the mid to lower portion of the glacial sequence and contain intervals of low-shear-strength clays and silts. Two large (1.3 and 7 Mt or 1.4 and 7.7 million st) waste rock buttresses were required to maintain slope stability using slot-cut and fill mining methods, as described in Fortin et al. (2011).The Valley porphyry deposit occurs in the central portion of the late Upper Triassic Guichon Creek Batholith, which intrudes assemblages of the Permian Cache Creek and Upper Triassic Nicola groups. The Valley deposit occurs in an area of intense fracturing near the intersection of the northerly trending Lornex Fault and the northwest to westerly trending Highland Valley Fault."

The Carbon Disclosure Project (the pre-eminent global initiative for institutional investor collaboration on climate change) groups the business risks (and opportunities) related to climate change into four categories: 1. Regulatory risks from tightening legislation (and opportunities for companies that can make the carbon market work for them), e.g. rising costs for carbon and energy-intensive processes. 2. Competitive risks & opportunities generated by a possible decline in customer demand for carbon/energy intensive products (and opportunities from a consequent rise in demand for efficient / low carbon products). 3. Reputational risks from perceived inaction on climate change (and benefits to those perceived to be ?solutions providers?). 4. Physical risks from changes to climatic patterns, e.g. asset damage from extreme weather events; project delays; water scarcity; resource risks as certain crops become no longer viable in certain areas and new supply chains become necessary; and potential human and socio-political impacts. All of these are already having repercussions for businesses in certain sectors and geographies. The understanding of specific impacts of climate change is still evolving but it is clear that climate change will have a material impact on the value of many businesses, either directly or indirectly. Many commentators and analysts consider that rising energy costs are likely to represent the most direct and immediate investment risk that climate change and the resulting regulatory responses will create for business in the near term. However, it is already possible to identify numerous examples of competitive and reputational risks and opportunities that are leading to significant value creation or destruction in business: the success of the Toyota Prius; the rush by the UK?s leading supermarket retailers to ?green? their brands; and the surging fortunes of companies involved in the manufacture of renewable energy generation equipment, are all manifestations of this trend. In addition, the potential physical impacts of climate change are also making themselves felt in certain sectors: an example is the Australian wine industry, suffering after an extreme and prolonged period of drought. THE PROJECT This paper describes a project undertaken for a multinational mining company to examine the physical risks from climate change across its international business operations. The study addressed 163 components of the business and included operating sites (mines, smelters, and refineries), key transport routes (road and rail) and port links. The inclusion of the transport networks and ports is extremely important; key transport routes (e.g. a key railway link) may often be impacted (e.g. by flooding) far more than individual sites due to their large geographic exposure and multiple potential failure points. Extreme weather events causing loss of life and major economic damage continue to be front page news. According to the World Meteorological Organization, January to July 2007 ?was marked by record weather extremes in many regions across the world.? Inevitably, the associated phenomena are starting to impact business and investments, not so much as deal breakers, but in changing the parameters of risk management and the approaches required to devise mitigation measures. EXAMPLES OF EXTREME WEATHER EVENTS No one event can be presented as directly attributable evidence of climate change, however climate change projections suggest that the frequency and severity of many extreme weather events can be expected to increase in a warming world. In August 2003, a heat wave struck Europe, with temperatures as high as 42°C (108°F). As summer temperatures in much of northern Europe rarely exceed 30°C (86°F), the area was unprepared for the disaster, and many thousands of deaths occurred. In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina caused catastrophic damage along the Gulf Coast of the United States, forcing the effective abandonment of south-eastern Louisiana (including New Orleans) for up to two months and damaging oil wells that resulted in increased oil prices. Katrina killed over 1,800 people and caused at least $75 billion in damages, making it one of the costliest natural disasters of all time. This was followed in September, by Hurricane Rita which left 119 people dead along the U.S. Gulf Coast, causing $9.4 billion in damage. In January 2006, hundreds of people were killed when Russia, Eastern Europe and Scandinavia experienced the coldest weather for decades. In summer 2007, dramatic floods in the south central region of England, UK left 350,000 people without drinking water and many without electricity. Transport infrastructure was severely disrupted; combined with floods which occurred earlier in the summer in Yorkshire (North England), the damage is estimated to total over £2 billion. ASSESSING RISKS FROM CLIMATE CHANGE To date, only a minority of companies have attempted to quantify the risks from climate change. However, investors are seeking greater disclosure of climate change related risks and opportunities and it is expected companies that can demonstrate they are prepared for climate change will attract higher market valuations. Climate Change Threats A variety of climate change threats were examined for their potential to have a potential measurable impact on the mining company?s business operations. Those considered most significant were included in the study and are shown in Table 1 (see Appendix A). Certain threats can be considered as being cyclical in nature and the future predictions may suggest a change in the frequency and severity of such events (e.g. storms/hurricanes, rainfall, drought). However other threats are associated with a gradual change over time (e.g. loss of glaciers, loss of permafrost, sea level rises). A slightly different approach is needed to address this differing nature of the threats, as described subsequently. Climatic Regions Much of the research and data associated with climate change is collected and reported on a regional basis. An example of the climate change impacts predicted for a number of climatic regions is shown in Table 2 (see Appendix A).

Introduction During the last decade, the metallic minerals segment of the industry could be categorized as a "feast-or-famine" business. It is no secret that metallic minerals are cyclical. Employment opportunities greatly depend on the supply and demand for its mineral products. It is also not unusual for there to be a lag between the industry's manpower requirements and academia's ability to produce new graduates. Due to this lag, there will be years with manpower shortages, as in the mid-1970s. At other times, supply will exceed demand. The question is where will the jobs be in the years to come? This presentation will review reasons why employment opportunities have declined within the metallic minerals industry. It will also predict future demand for mineral engineering graduates. And it will outline strategies for obtaining an employment offer. Historical Review - Employment From 1977 through 1983, about 75% of all metal mining employees were directly engaged in production activities, down from 83% in 1965. This decline reflects increased use of labor saving equipment, and more government regulation and foreign competition. Metal mining's employment decreased from 74,000 jobs in 1982 to fewer than 68,000 in 1983 - an 8% decline. The overall industry is having these problems because of the general downturn in the economy. For example, at the beginning of this decade, US automobile and steel industries were in trouble. Interest rates were too high and volatile. This adversely affected construction, housing starts, and manufacturing. All these industries, being large users of base metals, drastically affected the metals industry. US copper companies are still having problems. Reports indicate that many copper employers have cut production, laid-off workers, and permanently closed mines, refineries, and smelters. A decline in the demand for US produced metal products, such as copper, obviously affects some mineral engineering employment opportunities. Other factors to consider when looking at employment opportunities and why it has become difficult for US metal producers to compete in the world market include: • The grades of ore bodies of many US minerals are considerably lower than the grades of ores being mined elsewhere in the world. • The grades of ore bodies currently being mined in the US are steadily declining. • Foreign producers are largely government controlled and are not necessarily subject to the realities of supply and demand. • US environmental regulations have considerably added to production costs. Foreign producers in most countries do not have to worry about these additional costs. • US mines are getting deeper. This adds to the cost of production because of the increasing distance the ore has to be transported. • Plants and equipment are outdated. Many companies find themselves operating with equipment and plants that need modernizing or replacing. This obviously hinders competitive productivity. • Labor and management have had problems. Work stoppages in certain mining businesses and high wage and benefit costs in relation to foreign producers place US producers at a disadvantage. • Much land is unavailable. The US government owns most of the land considered to have the best potential for minerals development. Most of this land is unavailable for mining or exploration. Therefore, it appears that finding employment with a company whose primary business is mining and processing most metals, such as copper, in the US will be quite restricted and competitive. Future Demand It is difficult to anticipate what key employment opportunities within the next few years will be available to mineral engineering graduates. The Engineering Manpower Commission estimated that US engineering schools awarded 72,471 undergraduate degrees in 1983 vs. 66,990 in 1982. This was the eighth consecutive year in which the number of baccalaureates awarded has increased. On a brighter note, the US government's Occupational Outlook Quarterly stated that the growth rate through 1995 for all engineers is an encouraging 49% over present levels. Recovery of industrially useful metals from various secondary sources is an important issue in Korea whose natural resources are limited and needs in the strategic metals are on the rise. In order to meet such needs, researchers at the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources have launched a number of projects to help the nation to recover various metals from secondary sources. In this study, silver is successfully recovered from spent silver-oxide batteries first by distillation to remove mercury. The distilled residue was next subjected to leaching of silver using nitric acid. The study involves finding optimum conditions to leach silver from the distilled residue and subsequently to recover silver from the leach liquor by chemical precipitation. The chemically precipitated products are then subjected to reduction roasting to recover silver metal.

Mining at Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting's Snow Lake Division is now in the mature stage of the mines' lives. These base metal copper-zinc mines have been operating for more than 30 years. Stopes had small pillars called "crown pillars" left between them. These pillars range up to 100 m (330 ft) long by 40 m (130 ft) wide and 15 m (50 ft) thick. Hudson Bay have been successful in removing these pillars by using cable slings, electric scoops, longhole mining and diesel load-haul-dump equipment. The different shapes and sizes of these pillars has required that many innovative techniques be tried in order to find acceptable economic mining methods. An overview of the different methods will be outlined. Background Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting's Snow Lake Division is located in Manitoba some 800 km (500 miles) north of Winnipeg and 200 km (125 miles) by road from the Hudson Bay smelter complex located in Flin Flon, Manitoba (Fig. I). There are currently three producing underground mines and one open pit operating at the Snow Lake Division, producing copper and zinc concentrates. Pillar recovery is intensive and vital to continued production of these mature mines. The crown pillars are producing more than 50% of the current mine production. This figure will increase in the future. The two mines at which crown pillar recovery is taking place and that will be discussed are the 400 t/d (440 stpd) Rod Mine and the 1000 t/d (1100 stpd) Stall Lake Mine, both five-day-a-week producers. Crown pillar mining has been applied for some time at these mines. However, it was only recently that the crown pillars became vital to production. This has necessitated a number of innovative techniques to recover them.

In 2004, rare earths were not mined in the United States. The major supplier, Molycorp, continued to maintain a large stockpile of rare-earth concentrates and compounds. Major uses for these commodities were in automotive catalytic converters, petroleum fluid-cracking catalysts, permanent magnets, glass-polishing compounds, ceramics, metal-alloying additives, phosphors and rechargeable batteries. Consumption of refined rare-earth products decreased. The United States was a major importer and exporter of rare earths in 2004. Yttrium was not mined or refined in the United States in 2004. Imports from China, France and Japan accounted for most of the U.S. supply of yttrium compounds for refined yttrium products.

The US Bureau of Mines and the Santa Cruz Joint Venture (SCJV) are working on a production-scale, in situ copper recovery project in Arizona. The research is being conducted at the Santa Cruz site, located 11.2 km (7 miles) west of Casa Grande, AZ (Fig. 1). Santa Cruz is a 1.36-Gt (1.5 billion st) porphyry deposit averaging 0.6% Cu, of which 65% is oxidized, concealed beneath post-mineral alluvium at depths of 365-914 m (1500-3000 ft). The Bureau and the SCJV will evaluate in situ mining as a method for extracting copper from this previously unmined deposit. Research objectives of the Santa Cruz project are: - to demonstrate that an in situ research test can be operated in an environmentally acceptable manner ; and * to operate an in situ well pattern long enough to develop information on copper recovery and economic feasibility data. In situ mining of copper from undisturbed deposits has not been attempted commercially. There are several potential advantages with in situ mining: less exposure of miners to hazards, lower pital costs for the mine and plant and lower operating costs. In addition, there are no pits, dumps or tailings, which means less environmental impact.

Peruvian legislation requires the preparation of an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) for new and expanding mines/beneficiation facilities and the preparation and implementation of an Environmental Adjustment and Management Program (PAMA) to control and mitigate environmental impacts associated with existing mining/beneficiation activities. Shepherd Miller, Inc., developed guidance documents for preparing an EIS and PAMA for Peru's Ministry of Energy and Mines and presented workshops to Peru's mining industry on preparing an EIS and PAMA. This paper discusses the process and approach taken and the results.

A review is undertaken of existing mathematical models of compaction process in roll press. The example of plane-strain, plane-stress model is presented together with comparisons between computed and experimentally recorded pressure distribution in roll nip region. Next, the discrepancies between predicted and measured values are discussed and practical method based on experimental optimization of compaction process using laboratory roll press is proposed. Examples of the selection of optimum roll press operating parameters for calcium oxide fines, sodium chloride and iron oxide dust are presented to illustrate advantages of the method. Finally scale up procedure is discussed for estimating the performance of commercial size roll press based on the data collected on laboratory size equipment.
