Several possible physico-chemical properties of composite electrodes for oxygen evolution are presented to describe experimental data for which a mathematical model had been developed. On this basis, local electrical and electrochemical properties of a composite electrode were investigated with conductive atomic force microscopy (CAFM) and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM). It could be shown by CAFM measurement that the boundary between matrix and catalyst particles seemed to have special advantageous electrical properties. The SECM measurements showed the presence of mass transport phenomena with increased surface concentrations, whilst the thickness of the Nernst diffusion layer was very small. An intermediate was detected and assigned to be hydrogen peroxide. From all species involved in the oxygen evolution reaction (H2O2, H+ and O2), it was concluded that local active spots exist on the electrode on which hydrogen peroxide reacts to oxygen and protons. A two?step two-material process was suggested to explain the whole oxygen evolution mechanism.

The beneficiation equipment under the control of plant metallurgists exploits the differences in the physical properties between valuable and waste mineral components. In many cases, laboratory results are too late for process control and can only serve the purpose of "post" reports, the calculation of a mass balance and the issue of a quality certificate. As a result, experienced operators regularly adjust separation equipment based on the colour and texture of the various product streams in the beneficiation plant. Metallurgists quickly learn to recognise the different minerals in their ore body. The stereo microscope has been a valuable tool used by operators to quantify known mineral species. For many years it was the only practical method available for the purpose of process control and even for quality contro1. The modem spectroscope is far superior to the human eye and can rapidly detect a change in mineral composition. New generation optical scanners and digital signal processors can provide useful signals, related to mineral composition that can readily be applied for the purpose of process control. Successful case studies, covering dry in-line and slurry applications as well as in-plant fast spot analysers are presented.

The multi-reef area of Cooke 3 Shaft provides a unique mining challenge on account of the very thin middlings between the pay bands and the marginal values of the reef. It is uneconomic or impractical, because of the excessive heights, to mine the middlings using conventional stoping methods. The development of suitable mining methods is discussed with particular emphasis on the control of water inflow and the policy of not jeopardizing or sterilizing other reef horizons by the mining method implemented. No definite solution is currently available, but with the aid of instrumentation, computer analyses and mechanized mining equipment, the mine continues to attempt to maximize extraction and profits.

Optimising the configuration of infill drill holes is an important step during mineral exploration campaigns. However, this optimisation process encompassing all possible drilling configurations within a mineral deposit is highly combinatorial and hard to solve in a reasonable time. This paper proposes using spatial clustering algorithms to divide the orebody into contiguous zones and target the best zones with infill drilling in order to reduce the size of this optimisation problem. Several clustering algorithms are assessed in a spatial context on hypothetical datasets. This evaluation shows that the hierarchical density-based spatial clustering application with noise (HDBSCAN) algorithm can be used in combination with the uniform manifold approximation and projection (UMAP) dimensionality reduction algorithm to identify contiguous zones in the orebody.

This paper ,examines the kinetics of the extraction of uranium from acid sulphate solutions by strongbase anionexchange resins. Parameters such as the concentration of uranium in solution. the agitation of the resin beads in solution. the size of the resin beads. and the degree of cross-linking within the resin matrix were varied. and the effec ts on the kinetics are reported. The applicability, of various empirical kinetic models to the description of the data is assessed, and an attempt is made at the modelling of the rate data in terms of established theories about the diffusion of ions through films of stagnant liquid and through spherical beads of resin.

A simple mathematical model is presented that relates the 'head' developed at the surface of pulp in a tank to the power dissipated by the air in producing it. The value for the head is then used in the calculation of the superficial circulating velocity of the pulp and the area of the overflow, and the product of these two values gives the pumping rate of the pulp. Thus, the superficial circulating velocity, and hence pumping rate of the pulp, are related directly to the flow-rate of the air. This hypothesis was tested with good results in an air-agitated pachuca tank (of 1 m in diameter) fitted with a draught tube. The method can also be used for the prediction of the pumping rates in production-scale vessels.

A description is given of the design of the continuous ion-exchange demonstration plant at Blyvooruitzicht Gold Mine, including details of the process design, the column construction, and the control system. The operating and process results gathered over a period of seventeen months are summarized, and development work and modifications to the process are discussed. It is concluded that the system comprising continuous loading and continuous elution is technically feasible and can be scaled up with confidence.

Refractory design remains the most fundamental factor in furnace construction. Refractory design details and proven technology consideration is of paramount importance to come up with an optimum furnace life and to maintain productivity in the life span of the furnace lining. The failure to produce a technically or operationally durable refractory design lining could give rise to pre-mature deterioration of the refractory lining and furnace shell. The premature failure of the furnace lining will lead to extensive heat losses, furnace bath shift, change in taphole orientation and alteration of the Pitch Circle Diameter. A combination of these were experienced at Zimbabwe Alloys? new high carbon ferrochrome furnace. The Zimbabwe Alloys experience has shown an excellent furnace performance in the first two years of operation although signs of an anomaly showed within the first six months of the new furnace. Production slowed down due to induced problems from refractory failure causing furnace distortions impacting on the availability of the furnace and smelting capacity. This paper presents the lessons learnt, measures taken to deal with the premature failure and constraints within which the situation was managed.

In the processing of sulfidic ores, pyrite is usually depressed and ends up in the tailings. However, pyrite is the most common species responsible for acid mine drainage (AMD) due to its spontaneous oxidation. This AMD affects the tailing chemical stability by dissolving some toxic or heavy metals species such as As, Cd, Co, Pb, and Zn, which can migrate into the surrounding ecosystems. Therefore, the strategies to reduce pyrite’s environmental impacts are a crucial point to produce more chemically stable tailings. Consequently, numerous studies have been made to find procedures that could inhibit or restrain AMD. This work aims to develop a procedure for designing conceptual flotation circuits that can produce tailings with low content of pyrite and to assess this type of circuit with traditional flotation circuits. The method consists of applying optimal flotation design where three products are considered: metal concentrate, pyrite concentrate, and tailing with low content of pyrite. Two approaches are considered; in the first, a flotation circuit is designed to generate a concentrate rich in all sulfide minerals and to obtain a tail with low pyrite content. Then, a second flotation circuit is designed for the selective separation of the bulk into metal concentrate and pyrite concentrate. This is called fractional separation design. In the second approach, a flotation circuit design is realised that generate the three products simultaneously. This is called integrated separation design. Both fractional separation design and integrated separation design are assessed in this paper. This methodology is focused on cleaner production (waste prevention and resource minimisation) rather than end-of-pipe technology (treat existing waste). The methodology was applied to a copper sulfide ore from a local company in the Antofagasta region (Chile). This ore contains chalcocite, covellite, iron oxides, and pyrite. Recent publications have demonstrated the important role that can be played by a priori information of the grade levels, variability, and spatial patterns in adjacent or nearby areas in improving the quality of grade estimates for virgin or sparsely drilled areas. A research project was therefore conducted involving the collection and analysis of extensive sampling and borehole data from 7 reefs on some 30 Witwatersrand mines. This paper shows that the 'equivalent' log variance for the two-parameter lognormal model provides a good basis for the study and comparison of the levels and behaviour of relative variances. The trends of these against the corresponding log areas were found to form distinctive patterns, which are useful for these purposes. The patterns for the Basal, Vaal, Carbon Leader, and Main Reef Series form a reasonably close group, whereas those for the V.C.R.(particularly where the facies are mixed), B Reef, and Kimberley-Elsburg Reefs (particularly for narrow channel widths) do not always conform. The patterns shown by underground chip samples are also compared with those obtained from borehole cores. It is shown how this information can be used to improve the borehole valuation of new mines and of virgin areas in existing mines.

The PPRust North project is an expansion of existing operations on the ?Platreef? orebody in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. Anglo Platinum has been mining and processing the Platreef since 1993 at the adjacent Sandsloot and Zwartfontein South open pits at a current rate of approximately 4.5 million tons per annum. This paper describes the origin of the proposed process flow sheet. A comprehensive test work programme has been conducted evaluating the best process flow sheet for the very hard and variable ore in the proposed mining area. The selection of the comminution circuit is discussed where conventional crushing and SABC options were analysed based on both extensive test work and analyses of current operational data at the existing concentrator. The application of the high pressure grinding roll technology has significant advantages?it replaces the 3rd and 4th stage crushing stages in a conventional circuit. This programme has been conducted over several years and has involved work done at site at pilot scale, internally at the company?s research facilities and externally at various sites. The on-site pilot work was completed over a 7-month period at the existing concentrator facility using a ThyssenKrupp-Polysius, ?Polycom?, 950 mm by 350 mm, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) machine. In excess of 185 000 tons of ore was processed through the unit during the trial period. This paper describes the test work programme and particularly the proposed application of high pressure grinding technology and its potential for further application in the platinum industry.

During the last 12 months, Sandvik?s Technical Service Group has carried out nine Scoping and Pre-feasibility studies for the application of In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) for large mining companies; the majority in conjunction with the Snowden Consulting Group. During these studies several key and recurring drivers have been identified: 1. Mining schedule issues ? there are several issues which crop up repeatedly, including: ?the unnecessary curvature of pit walls, ?very high rates of vertical advance which are (created by schedule optimisers to minimise stripping at all times) which are at the limit of what can be realistically achieved (and which of course make it harder for IPCC to achieve any impact), and ?The allocation of material to semi-mobile systems to maximise the ability for IPCC to be an effective alternative. 2. IPCC productivity issues ? the key issues are the IPCC system operating hours achievable, and the system throughput (both instantaneous and the average). 3. IPCC Risk issues ? there are perceptions about the risks associated with the use of IPCC which are a mix of reality and fiction, but which nonetheless create negativity towards the use of IPCC. In this paper, the authors wish to address specifically the factors affecting the IPCC productivity.

The minerals industry needs the support of al sections of the population if it is going to be able to supply the new materials required for future development. It will achieve this support only if its image is good. Perceived images of the minerals industry are examined in respect of history, technology, environment, safety, education, and economics. Concern is expressed about the low technological image of the industry and the declining number of students enrolling in minerals-related disciplines. It is concluded that it is the professionals, through institutes like The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, who must take the lead in improving the image of the minerals industry. The Presidential Address gives data to support this thesis; data that, is hoped, can be used in efforts to educate people about the minerals industry.

In May 2009 a test work programme was carried out at the sorting laboratory of CommodasUltrasort in Germany which was aimed at establishing the efficiency of X- ray transmission sorting for the recovery of unliberated diamonds in a size range of +8mm. A PRO Tertiary XRT belt sorter with a working width of 600mm and a belt speed of -3mJs was used for the test work. Dual energy X-ray transmission sorting is a type of sensor-based sorting which uses an X-ray scanning system, The attenuation of the transmitting X-rays is measured at two different energy levels, Thereby it is possible to eliminate the effect of the particle thickness on the measurement result. The effective measurement results in a classification by elemental order based on the periodic table.

"The objective of the study was to determine the type and distribution of rare earth elements (REEs) in the phosphate flotation concentrate from the Esfordi flotation plant in central Iran, in order to understand their leaching behaviour. Samples of the concentrate were prepared and analysed using XRF, XRD, ICP, and EMPA. The Ce, Nd, La, and Y contents were 5608, 2227, 1959, and 679.7 mg/kg, respectively. The main REEbearing minerals in the concentrate are fluorapatite, monazite, and xenotime. Apatite is the chief mineral of the concentrate and the ratio of apatite to monazite is greater than 60. From EMPA analysis, monazite contains a much higher proportion of REEs than apatite, but more than 50% of the REE content of the concentrate is in apatite, as this is the main mineral constituent of the concentrate. During the leaching of REEs in the phosphoric acid production process, more than 99% of the total rare earth values report to the large amounts of phosphogypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) formed during the dissolution reaction. Accordingly, two process options are suggested for treating the Esfordi concentrate. In the first option, the concentrate is treated with 98% H2SO4 at 200–300°C. After digestion and water leaching, phosphorus and REEs are precipitated out of solution. In the second option, the concentrate is treated in a pre-leach stage. The process residue from the pre-leach stage is then subjected to acid digestion at elevated temperature for phosphoric acid production.IntroductionThe rare earth elements (REEs) comprise a set of 17 chemical elements in the periodic table, specifically the 15 lanthanides plus scandium and yttrium. REEs and alloys that contain them are used in devices such as computer memory, rechargeable batteries, cell phones, catalytic converters, magnets, fluorescent lighting, and many more (Krishnamurthy and Gupta, 2004). China supplies about 94% of the REE demand, with the remaining 6% coming from Russia and Estonia, the USA, India, Malaysia, and Brazil (Zhanheng, 2011). Increased industrial development in China has prompted the Chinese government to limit annual export quotas to approximately 35 kt of rare earth oxides (REOs), while non-Chinese annual demand is expected to reach 80 kt by the year 2015. This constriction of supply is being met by the development of many new rare earth mining projects, each of which has its own unique mining and processing challenges (Jordens, Cheng, and Waters, 2013). One of these projects is the Esfordi phosphate project, which is located in Yazd Province in central Iran. The concentrate from the Esfordi flotation plant contains 1.2–1.5% REEs."

Tech.). Natal (Member) The de-watering, spray drying, and converter operations at Impala are described, aspects that may be new to the minerals industry in South Africa being elaborated. Air-pollution control necessitated the installation of a sulphuric acid plant to limit the emission of sulphur dioxide to the atmosphere. Closer control of the smelting and converting operations was required for successful operation of the acid plant on the inherently Iow and varied concentration of feed gas from converter blowing. Approximately 82 per cent of the sulphur entering the smelter is converted to sulphur dioxide, of which 67 per cent is fed into the sulphuric acid plant.

Rare earth elements (REE) are vital components in modern electronics and green technology products. Supply is tight and global demand is expected to increase, leading to high risk for the economic and national security of countries largely dependent upon foreign supplies. Recycling of REE from consumer and industrial waste materials is a possible way to help meet demand. We have shown previously that biohydrometallurgy can play an economically and environmentally sustainable role in REE recycling, particularly if agriculture or food wastes are used to produce organic acid bioleaching agents. A challenge for organic acid-based bioleaching is the incomplete conversion of the carbon substrate to an optimal organic acid biolixiviant with high REE extraction capability from a variety of REE-containing feedstocks (e.g., mining wastes, magnets from end of life products, spent batteries, etc.). To help meet this challenge a metabolic model was developed for Gluconobacter oxydans to identify options for improving sugar conversion to organic acids. Model predictions were consistent with laboratory data for the microbial consumption of glucose and production of gluconic acid, and suggested that providing growth conditions with relatively high C:N molar ratios could result in lower pH biolixiviant production and thus improve bioleaching. In late 1997 a request was received to assist with determining the powered support unit (shield) load capacities for the planned 2 seam short wall. This project had a number of aspects which made it attractive to utilize numerical modelling in conjunction with other more conventional design tools in the design of the shields. Amongst these were: The 2 seam panels were to be laid out about 25 m below the previously short walled 4 seam, the 4 seam had in turn been over-mined by the 5 seam long wall, the proposed face height of the 2 seam short wall was 5.5 m while the 4 seam had been mined at 4 m. The top seam in the area (5 seam) had been mined at between 1.5 and 2.2 m high, the face conditions with about 95 m of broken material applying dead weight loading to the 2 to 4 seam inter-burden septum were hard to predict and cyclical loading due to the presence of strong sandstone bands in the 2 to 4 seam inter-burden. The basic thrust of the study was to take the known, and successful, situation (4 seam short wall) and carry out comparative modelling to enable prediction of likely 2 seam conditions. Some two dimensional aspects studied were: 5 m goaf hanging up behind shields, stresses in beams to determine likely first goaf roof span, stresses in cantilever beams to asses cyclical loading due to sandstone bands in the interburden being loaded by the overlying goaf and stresses on chain and crush pillars adjacent to the goaf edge. Three dimensional aspects that were investigated included: Load distribution along face for close goafing and 5 m goaf hang-up and load in a 1 m wide rib modelled in the position of the powered support units. From the modelling it was possible to determine the optimal shield leg capacity of the new 2 seam equipment. These outputs were used when drawing up the technical specifications for manufacture of the new equipment. The face was successfully commissioned in August 2002. La couche supérieure de la région (couche 5) avait été exploitée entre 1.5 et 2.2 m de hauteur ; il était difficile de prédire les conditions de taille, avec environ 95m de matériaux cassés ajoutant une charge morte à la plaque de séparation entre les couches 2 et 4 et un chargement cyclique causé par des bandes de grès dans l’entre-fardeau 2-4. L’idée principale de l’étude fut de prendre la situation connue et réussie (couche 4 courte taille) et de faire une modélisation comparative pour prédire les conditions probables de la couche 2. Certains des aspects à double dimension qui furent étudiés étaient : Un accrochage de remblai de 5m derrière les boucliers ; contraintes dans les poutres pour déterminer le premier intervalle probable entre remblai et toit ; contraintes dans les poutres en porte-à-faux pour évaluer le chargement cyclique causé par les bandes de grès dans l’entre-fardeau qui est accablé par le remblai et les contraintes sur les piliers par chaîne et d’écrasement adjacents au bord du remblai. Aspects à trois dimensions qui furent étudiés : Distribution de la charge le long de la taille pour les remblais proches et l’accrochage de remblai de 5 m et la charge dans une nervure de 1 m de large modelée dans la position des unités de soutènement mécanisées. La modélisation a permis de déterminer la capacité de portée optimale du bouclier du dispositif nouveau pour la couche 2.
