Primary roof support represents the first line of defence against rockrelated falls of ground in underground mines, and improper utilization or misunderstanding of the applicability and behaviour of primary support can be costly from a safety standpoint. This is a major concern for underground mines, as roof support is the single most costly expense from a mining operational perspective. This is further backed by the evidence that, in the USA, hundreds of injuries and fatalities still occur each year because of rib, roof, and massive roof falls. Additionally, the fully-grouted passive rebar, fully-grouted tension rebar, and resin-assisted mechanical anchor bolts, which constitute a large portion (89%) of the 68 million bolts installed each year in underground mines in the USA can vary in cost quite dramatically. To mitigate this concern a study was conducted in 2010 by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, in conjunction with Southern Illinois University of Carbondale, to assess the performance of primary roofbolts in underground coal mines for improved safety and cost. This was accomplished using underground roofbolt monitoring solutions, field data, and numerical modelling to better understand the quasi-static behaviour of underground coal mine roofs and the response behaviour of the bolts. In particular, over 170 instrumented extensometers, closure meters, shear meters, fully-grouted passive rebar, fully-grouted tension rebar, and resin-assisted mechanical roofbolts were installed at three coal mines across the USA. Of these three mines, two used the room and pillar extraction method and the other used the longwall extraction method. There was no evidence to indicate a difference in performance of the active primary roofbolts compared with the passive primary roofbolts. Additionally, in the initial loading phase, the active bolts showed no difference in loading, indicating that tension bleed-off is of more of a concern than originally thought. Lastly, for the initial computer modelling studies, challenges still remain in obtaining a good match to the in situ bolt measurements and replicating the discontinuous roof rock and in situ bolt behaviour over time.

Currently lead nitrate is used as the recommended activator in Au-Sb flotation. However, due to high levels of hazard, the application of lead nitrate constitutes a potential risk for human health and ecosystems. To mitigate the harmful impact of activators on the environment, further research on activation by alternative reagents has been launched to promote the efficiency of antimony ores. In the present study, adsorption of lead, copper and zinc cations has been investigated by nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR), which has revealed copper and zinc cations penetration into the mineral lattice, although lead cations remain adsorbed on the mineral surface. However, the combination of zinc and copper cations leads to preferential volumetric adsorption of zinc in the mineral lattice and further surface adsorption of copper which positively affects the activation process. It has been established that activation of stibnite can be achieved effectively with the mixture of Cu2+:Zn2+=1:1 as much as with lead cations in antimony ore flotation. As a part of this work, the computational modelling has been used in prognosis of reagent activity evaluation (PRAE) for stibnite and aurostibite flotation by sulfhydryl collectors. The lower PRAE value the stronger the ability of a collector to form a stable complex with a mineral. PRAE has shown a strong negative trend to complex formation on the mineral surface of aurostibite and stibnite. Based on these studies, several collectors have been proposed for effective flotation. To verify the feasibility of proposed collectors tetramethyl (ethyl) thiuram disulfides (TMTD and TETD) have been used for flotation of stibnite, sphalerite, pyrite and arsenopyrite. Flotation performance has been improved significantly with TMTD that allows the avoidance of lead nitrate application and increases the recovery of antimony by 8,16%. This study investigated the corrosion rates of various steel types and coatings used for friction rock stabilisers in a deep-level gold mine under diverse underground environmental conditions. Testing was conducted in situ within ramps, intake airways, and exhaust airways, and through simulated laboratory experiments. Results revealed that environmental variations significantly influence the corrosion performance of different materials and coatings. Duplex coatings, made up of galvanised steel with an organic paint layer, demonstrated the highest corrosion resistance. Zinc-based coatings provided moderate protection, while 3CR12 stainless steel and uncoated S420 carbon steel exhibited comparatively poor resistance under both aqueous and atmospheric conditions.

Introduction Structure appears to be of secondary importance to the Bushveld Complex when viewed from a distance. However, a closer look already reveals that large fault zones bound the Bushveld Complex. These fault zones are deep-seated crustal lineaments of continental magnitude such as the Thabazimbi-Murchison Lineament, the Johannesburg-Barberton Lineament, the Palala Fault zone and the Rustenburg fault. Furthermore, the Bushveld Complex is transected by large faults such as the Vlakfontein Fault, visible in the Pilanesberg, the Steelport Fault and the Laersdfrift Fault in the Eastern Bushveld, the Brits Graben, and a multitude of dyke generations (Figure 1). When pursuing structures on a project scale, the lack of outcrop, particularly in the western part of the Bushveld, is of no help for the exploration geologist. Consequently, the first dataset that needs to be considered is the Landsatimagery. Older Landsat TM 5 or newer Landsat ETM 7 will immediately reveal areas of outcrop for field visits, and, after further processing, indicate the geological units, in particular the platiniferous Critical and the Main Zone of the Rustenburg Layered Suite (Figure 2). Airborne magnetic surveys are the subsequent dataset necessary for any decent interpretation of the geology under the ?Black Turf? cover. Currently Anglo Platinum acquires aeromagnetic surveys with a flight height of 20 m and a line spacing of 50 m. These result in high-resolution imagery absolutely crucial for dyke delineation and dip modelling, stratigraphic layer detection, IRUP detection and possibly pothole discovery and fault delineation (Figures 3 and 4). However, the aeromagnetic surveys and the Landsat imagery reveal structures very much confined to the surface and may be hundreds of metres above the platiniferous reef horizons. This may lead to inaccuracies. When determining the underground structures for shaft sinking and mine planning, a 3D seismic survey is advisable. Too many shafts have been sunk in the Witwatersrand Basin for gold and in the Bushveld for platinum without sufficient information of the structure beneath. Recent 3D seismic surveys in the Bushveld have proven the technology and visualized the reef horizons and led to an interpretation of the underground structure (Figures 5 and 6). [ ]

The inverse velocity method has proven to be an effective approach for predicting slope failures in surface mines by analysing displacement monitoring data. However, the accuracy of inverse velocity method predictions is significantly affected by instrumental noise and natural environmental variations, which influence the identification of different deformation stages. To enhance predictive accuracy, this study applies and evaluates three filtering techniques to velocity time series data: Exponential smoothing filter, short-term smoothing filter, long-term smoothing filter and also compares it to raw data (no filtering). A refined prediction framework, that is, filtered inverse velocity method analyser, is proposed to improve slope failure forecasting in surface mining operations. The results demonstrate that filter selection plays a crucial role in optimising failure time predictions, offering valuable insights for geotechnical monitoring and early warning systems in surface mines.

Hydrocyclones are the most commonly used classifiers in the mining industry. The reason for this is their low operating cost and a small footprint. Data from plant trials where screens replaced hydrocyclones indicated that lower bypass of fines and sharper separation could improve breakage rates, with a positive effect on flotation circuit performance throughput. Despite the importance of classification, hydrocyclones have not received as much attention as more expensive comminution units, and their technological progress has been incremental. Noticeable water split (Rf) reductions of a semi-inverted hydrocyclone have been reported in the past. According to theory, the hydrocyclone with reduced Rf will improve classification of fines. A classification study using semi-inverted hydrocyclones was conducted to determine if a hydrocyclone could be operated in a way that would minimise misclassified fines. The classification performance of a semi-inverted hydrocyclone will be presented in this paper and other potential applications will be discussed. The need to move towards faster and safer mine development is a key priority in mining houses globally. In addition to this, South Africa faces an array of challenges introduced by labour-intensive operations; hence a study was conducted to look into improving development rates and labour productivity, specifically in the areas where trackbound flat-end development is required. The aim of the study was to propose a method to deliver fit-for-purpose tracked tunnels that advanced at a rate of one blast per end every single working day. A major part of the study was to optimize the selection of an appropriate trackless fleet and mitigate any constraints introduced with the mechanization. This was done by creating scenarios, based on a typical case study, looking into the aspects around safety, mine design, mine activity cycling, men and machine requirements, service installations, and trackless-trackbound interfaces. The case study was based on a deep-level gold mine developing twin headings with connectings; however, with the move to extend and deepen platinum operations it is foreseen that twin end development will become more prevalent due to ventilation, logistical, and other requirements. With the introduction of the trackless mechanized system suggested, development rates of 56 m of system advance are expected (189 m total development), with on an average of three headings and fixed blast times. Scenarios run with multi-blast conditions yield expectations of 75 m/month advance of the system, significantly higher than the conventional performance seen today.

"The hot deformation behaviour of Nb-Ti microalloyed high-strength steel was investigated. Hot compression tests were conducted in the temperature range 900 to 1100°C under strain rates of 0.1, 1, and 5 s-1. Dynamic recrystallization (DRX) occurs as the main flow softening mechanism at high temperature and low strain rate. The hot deformation activation energy was calculated to be about 404 699 J/mol. The constitutive equation was developed to describe the relationship between peak stress, strain rate, and deformation temperature. The characteristics of DRX at different deformation conditions were extracted from the stressstrain curves using the work hardening parameter. The Cingara-McQueen equation was developed to predict the flow curves up to the peak strain. The processing maps were obtained on the basis of a dynamic materials model. The results predict an instability region in the temperature range 1010 to 1100°C when the strain rate exceeds 0.78 s-1. IntroductionThe 700 MPa grade HSLA steel is widely used in engineering machinery, automotive beams, carriages, and axle tubes, etc. (Pan et al., 2017 ). Generally, such grades contain a moderately high amount of Mn (approx. 1.4% and above), and microalloying elements like Nb, Ti, V, and Mo to impart the desired strength and toughness through solid-solution strengthening, precipitation hardening, and grain refinement dislocation strengthening (Chen and Yu, 2012; Opiela, 2014). However, the production costs can be greatly reduced by replacing part of the Nb, V, or Mo with inexpensive Ti and adopting the compact strip production CSP process (Opiela, 2014; Chen et al., 2015). Furthermore, the microalloying technology coupled with new-generation thermomechanical control processing (NG-TMCP) has proved efficient for achieving the proper balance between strength, toughness, ductility, and formability by means of a suitable combination of chemical composition and thermomechanical treatment parameters (Shukla et al., 2012; Wu, Zhou, and Liu, 2017).In hot forming processes, the complex microstructural evolutions are often induced by multiplicative hot deformation mechanisms, such as work hardening (WH), dynamic recovery (DRV), and dynamic recrystallization (DRX) (Zhang et al., 2014; Liang et al., 2015). Dynamic softening behaviour during hot processing has generated considerable interest because component properties are influenced significantly by its corresponding microstructural evolution (Wu et al., 2010). During deformation in the DRX process, deformed grains are replaced with substructures and newly formed fine and uniformly distributed grains. This occurs only when a critical strain for the onset of DRX is reached, and at the same time, the minimum rate of energy dissipating is reached (Ferdowsi et al., 2014). DRV occurs at a high strain rate and low temperature, reducing the stored energy greatly and making DRX difficult (Liang et al., 2015). The microstructural changes during DRX are sensitive to the processing parameters, such as strain rate, deformation temperature, and strain (Zhang et al., 2014; Ferdowsi et al., 2014). Therefore, in order to optimize the hot processing parameters, it is important to understand the behaviour of hot deformation visà- vis control of microstructural evolution."

Ladies and Gentlemen. It is my great pleasure on behalf of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and The Geological Society of South Africa to welcome you to the 15th CMMI Congress and to Southern Africa. It is a great honour to be hosting this event and we have been looking forward to it for a long time. I am sure the technical discussions and visits will be of great value, and I am confident you will return with pleasant memories of places and people in South Africa and neighbouring countries. The theme of this Congress, Resources and Technology', is appropriate for discussions on the ways and means of going forward in the minerals industry to create the employment and wealth so sorely needed in this region. The technical programme will give mineral industry professionals from different parts of the world the opportunity to share experience and expertise for the purpose of making operations more productive, safer and environmentally acceptable to the world at large. Delegates will be exposed to current technical developments by means of 133 papers prepared for the congress: 30 on geological subjects, 45 on mining, 29 on extractive metallurgy, and 29 in the field of metals technology.

A party of some 60 members of the Institute were welcomed at the Union Junction Works of Scaw Metals Limited on Thursday, 23rd January for a morning visit. Dr J. M. Bereza, the metallurgical Director, gave an informative introductory talk to the assembled visitors, which briefly covered the major activities of the Company. This was followed by refreshments, and the visitors were then allocated to 12 guides for the conducted tour of the Works. The progress of the Company is an impressive saga of the development of heavy industry in this country linked primarily to the expanding mining industry. Many other outlets are now available for Scaw products and the rapidly advancing techniques developed by their own chemists as well as the processes made available from overseas associates indicates the forward looking attitude of the Company. The visitors were impressed by the modern laboratory services, closely linked to rigid quality control, resulting in a high standard of final products. The most fascinating section to many of the visitors was the continuous casting machines and rolling mills recently installed, although the most lucrative section is the large steel foundry. After the tour the parties gathered in a marquee tent for liquid refreshments, followed by a lavish luncheon in the canteen. The visitors were officially welcomed by Mr Richard Boustred, the Deputy Managing Director, and Mr V. C. Robinson replied, thanking the Company on behalf of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Arrangements were made for golf in the afternoon at the Germiston Golf Club for those who wished to play. A.E.G.

n this study, silver and palladium nanoparticulate inks with different metal-binder ratios were screen-printed onto a paper substrate. The printed layers comprised the metal nanoparticles and an ethylcellulose binder. The layers are not typical metal composites due to the low concentration of binder and high porosity. The electrical sheet resistivity of each particle concentration was measured, and the data fitted using the scaling law of percolation theory and the general effective media (GEM) equation. The percolation parameters, i.e. the percolation threshold and the critical exponent, for each system were determined from the fits and compared. The percolation threshold for the palladium layer (39.8 wt%) was lower than that found for the silver layer (44.9 wt%). The critical exponents determined for the palladium and silver layers were both lower than the universal value for three-dimensional percolation systems. Microscopy observations indicate that the difference in the percolation threshold for the two layers can be attributed to variations in their microstructure.

Extraction of isolated blocks of ground with elevated levels of stress and/or seismicity is a common occurrence in South African gold mines. Isolated blocks of ground that are divorced from the main orebody and are bound by complex, dip and strike parallel, non-persistent geological structures dominate the Klerksdorp gold fields. No quantifiable methods exist to assess the risk associated with mining these and other classes of remnants. A case history, from a gold mine that planned to extract three remnant blocks hosted in a large complex fault system, is used to illustrate the decision making process based on a combination of underground observations, numerical and seismic techniques. Simple risk estimation matrices were developed and used to estimate remnant-mining risk and finally to quantify the decision on which of the three remnant blocks could be extracted at the lowest possible geo-mechanical risk. Il est courant dans les mines aurifères sud-africaines d’extraire des blocs de terrain isolés qui possèdent des niveaux élevés de contraintes et/ou sismicité. Les régions aurifères de Klerksdorp sont dominées par des blocs de terrain isolés qui sont séparés du gisement principal et qui sont retenus par des structures géologiques non continues, à parallèle de pendage et direction, et complexes. Il n’existe pas de méthodes quantifiables pour évaluer le risque associé à l’extraction de ce genre et autres genres de résidus. Une observation de cas, celle d’une mine d’or qui avait l’intention d’extraire trois blocs de résidus qui se trouvaient dans un grand système complexe de faille, est utilisée pour illustrer le processus décisionnel basé sur une combinaison d’observations souterraines, et de techniques numériques et sismiques. Des matrices simples d’estimation de risque furent développées et utilisées pour estimer le risque lié à l’extraction des résidus et finalement pour quantifier la décision sur lequel des trois blocs de résidus pouvait être exploité au moindre risque géo-mécanique. Die Extraktion isolierter Gesteinsblöcke mit erhöhtem Spannugsniveau oder Seismizität ist in südafrikanischen Goldminen üblich. Isolierte Gesteinsblöcke, die von der Haupterzader getrennt und durch komplexe, parallele abfallende und horizontale nicht persistent geologische Strukturen gebunden sind, beherrschen das Klerksdorp Goldfeld. Es gibt keine quantifizierbare Methoden die das Risiko welches mit dem Abbau dieser und anderer Klassen verbunden ist beschreiben. Eine Fallstudie einer Goldmine, welche die Extraktion von drei in einem großem komplexen Verwerfungssystem eingelagerten Einschlußblöcken plante, wird verwendet um den Entscheidungsprozeß zu illustrieren, der auf einer Kombination von Untertag Beobachtungen und numerischen und seismischen Techniken basiert. Einfache Gefahreinschätzungsmatrizen wurden entwickelt und angewendet um das Abbaurestrisiko abzuschätzen und letztendlich die Entscheidung zu quantifizieren, welcher der drei Einschlußblöcke unter dem niedrigst möglichen geo-mechanischen Risiko extrahiert werden konnte .

The aim of this investigation was to determine the effect of high-temperature heat treatment on the electrical resistivity of charcoal. Samples of two different wood types (eucalyptus and black wattle) were pyrolised in a retort at a temperature of 700°C and the resulting charcoals heat-treated in an induction furnace at temperatures from 800°C to 1800°C and residence times from 60 to 120 minutes. After cooling, the resistivities of the samples were measured at room temperature using the four-point probe technique. It was found that as the heat treatment temperature increased the electrical resistivity of the charcoal decreased, approaching an asymptotic value at higher temperatures. Longer residence times decreased the resistivity, but this effect was not pronounced.

It is proposed that the physical and chemical composition of individual mineral particles are an appropriate basis from which to model the performance of minerals processing equipment. Such a particle-based approach enables modelling across disciplines such as comminution, classification and flotation and automatically generates the traditional mass and chemistry balances. The general approach followed is to generate full grade-recovery curves for a separator by sampling product and tailings at varying mass yields. AutoSEM characterisation of each sample provides particle data that is used to reconcile mineral deportment and liberation to the measured size and assay data. In this way, partition surfaces can be generated and modelled. In this paper, an empirical model for the performance of a gravity spiral concentrator treating fine chromite ore is proposed. The model is based on the combination of two partition surfaces and is able to accommodate both forward and reverse gravity concentration effects per size fraction. The results show that this approach is well suited to represent spiral performance for the cases evaluated. The effect of two feed particle size distributions on the performance of the Multotec SC21 and SC25 spirals is demonstrated. Simulations are run in an Excel environment, linked to Python-enabled routines for enhanced data management and calculation speed. Iron ore pellets experience degradation during handling due low energy impacts and stresses. These impacts lead to volume or surface breakage of the pellets, creating fine particles that accumulate along the process. Some of the particles are in contact with the air and are dragged as dust into the workplace or into the atmosphere. The aerodynamic size of the particles allows them to be potentially inhaled by the workers or to be carried to nearby communities. Dust emission becomes critical at specific locations, such as transfer chutes and stockpiles. This work models the dust generation that occurs in an iron ore pellet stockyard using a methodology that combines experiments to quantify the degradation of the pellets to mathematical modelling of the dust emission mechanisms in the stockyard. First, laboratory tests were used to characterise the amount of mass and the particle size distribution of the dust generated by degradation under controlled conditions. Second, the flow over a stockpile of an iron ore pellet company was simulated with the aid of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Third, semiempirical equations linked the data generated by simulations and laboratory tests to estimate the dust emission in the stockyard. Finally, results were validated with measured field data, obtained with a novel online measurement tool. Results suggest that the approach is able to predict dust emission with sufficient accuracy and can be used for further implementation in the management of operations and decision making in order to reduce the environmental impact of the process. "A hierarchical four-character code designed for geological and allied data may be used to log exploration drill-holes and store the information on magnetic media. The code is intended for use in semi-free format and permits the collection of as much, or as little, data as the geologist may require for the purpose in hand. A method of data storage by variable length records is discussed.Information may be retrieved by means of a simple enquiry language. Optional output facilities could allow the retrieval of data in a form suitable for direct input to a contouring package. The enquiry parameters and interrogation program can thus provide the interface between the data bank and associated application systems."

This paper investigates the recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs) from a dilute cyanide leach solution containing base metals, in a manner similar to that used for gold extraction in a typical CIP process, and focuses on both the adsorption and elution stages. The carrier-phase extraction of precious metals using activated carbon offers significant advantages over other processes in terms of simplicity, the high pre-concentration factor, rapid phase separation, and relatively low capital and operating costs. As a sorbent, activated carbon is still by far the most important material because of its large surface area, high adsorption capacity, porous structure, negligible environmental toxicity, low cost, and high purity standards. Adsorption tests were performed on a pregnant alkaline leach solution (0.15 ppm Pt, 0.38 ppm Pd, 0.1 ppm Au) resulting from cyanide extraction performed in column leach tests. The initial adsorption rates of platinum, palladium, and gold were very fast and recoveries of these three metals were approximately 90 per cent after 2 hours and 100 per cent, 97.4 per cent, and 99.9 per cent respectively after 72 hours. The parameters that influence the extraction of PGMs and Au were examined to assess their relative importance during the adsorption process in order to provide the basis for process optimization. The concentration of thiocyanate was not identified as significant factor for PGMs adsorption, while nickel concentration was the most significant extraction process parameter. Base metal cyanide complexes adsorb and compete with the PGM complexes for sites on activated carbon, and while copper adsorption can be minimized by adjusting the residence time, nickel adsorbs at approximately the same rate as that of the PGMs, influencing the loading capacity and adsorption kinetics of the PGMs. The feasibility of eluting platinum and palladium cyanide complexes from activated carbon using an analogue of the AARL process was investigated. Platinum and palladium elute from activated carbon almost to completion in 4 to 5 bed volumes at 80°C, while the elution of gold at this temperature is slow, with a significant amount of gold still to be eluted after 16 bed volumes. Cyanide pre-treatment was found to have a significant influence on PGM elution. Higher cyanide concentration in the pre-treatment step results in more efficient elution up to a point, and experiments suggest the possibility of an optimum cyanide concentration, beyond which elution efficiency starts decreasing.

A Seminar to discuss 'Reactivity of Line in Steel Making' was held in the auditorium of Iscor's Headquarters Building in Pretoria on the 5th August, 1971. The Institute organised this Seminar on the occasion of the visit of Dr Obst of the Rheinische Kalkstein Werke GMBH, Wuelfrath, West Germany. The latter is one of the largest lime companies in the world and Dr Obst is in charge of their research laboratory. He and his co-workers have earned a reputation for their research into reactivity of lime in steel making. This work is also of great importance to the steel industry in this country, particularly with the changes which are occurring with the introduction of basic oxygen furnaces. Some 80 persons representing most of the major steel companies attended this Seminar. Dr Obst presented his most interesting paper which he illustrated with projector slides. This paper is printed in full in this journal. This was followed by several contributions and active discussions. The first contribution was made by Dr T. B. Beeton of the Research and Development Department, Iscor. He gave a brief summary of the studies on reactive lime carried out at Iscor since 1968. Their work was particularly related to the selection and definition of the various reactivity tests and the correlation of these with plant results. He demonstrated that the DIN methods, particularly the Din (40°) test, gave the best results and reported that good agreement had been reached between Iscor, Highveld and Northern Lime on future test procedures. Mr B. Lowther of The Northern Lime Company then dealt with problems associated with the production of high reactive lime. The rotary kilns at The Northern Lime plant at Lime Acres are particularly suitable for the production of high-reactive lime, because this type of kiln lends itself to accurate control of temperatures and retention times. Several problems, however, exist. Because of the long haul distances and the deterioration of reactive lime by absorption of CO2 and water, high reactive lime is not suitable for most customers. To constantly be changing kiln conditions to produce relatively small quantities of high-reactive lime, therefore, causes problems. Highveld Steel at present is the only company requiring high-reactive lime and a satisfactory product is now being produced at a cost because kiln capacity is reduced and fuel costs are higher. Dr P. R. Jochens, of the National Institute for Metallurgy then submitted data to show how the reactivity of soft burnt reactive lime deteriorated due to long railage hauls. Detailed sampling of trucks had been carried out leaving the lime works and on receipt at Highveld and it was demonstrated that there was deterioration in the top layers of the truck. This top layer protected the balance of the lime which is still in good condition on arrival at Highveld. Exposure to atmosphere by further handling and storage into the bunkers at Highveld, however, resulted in further severe deterioration in the lime reactivity and the lime when finally fed to the Basic Oxygen Furnace is reduced to one third to one quarter of the original reactivity value. The same deterioration does not occur with normal run of kiln lime, which is burnt harder, but still has a satisfactory reactivity for most purposes. Mr A. A. Hejja of the Department of Metallurgy, Witwatersrand University then made a contribution on the metallurgical aspects of the use of lime of different reactivities in the Basic Oxygen Furnace and the effect on desulphurization efficiencies. He gave a wealth of data on actual tests which had been carried out and came up with the surprising conclusion that the deterioration of high-reactive lime due to transport did not have as serious an effect on the efficiency of desulphurization as one would have expected. The efficiency was good provided high-reactive lime in the first instance had been produced, irrespective of whether it had deteriorated thereafter. Poor efficiency was obtained only when the lime in the first instance was produced in an unreactive form. The temperature rise in the Basic Oxygen Furnace also has a definite effect. If lime is introduced when the temperature is too high, soft burnt reactive lime becomes hard burnt and unreactive before it can dissolve in the slag. Use of ferromanganese slag assists dissolution of lime. There was a great deal of discussion following these contributions. Particular interest was expres8ed in the special lime described by Dr Obst. This consists of a mixture of fine lime which is premixed with fluxes and either briquetted or pelletised. The question of injecting finely ground lime as an alternative was also discussed. Both these systems eliminate the necessity for highly reactive lime. With smaller lime particles, larger surfaces are exposed thereby ensuring more rapid dissolution in the molten slag. The discussions generally were lively and informative and all present derived benefit from learning of the experiences of others. The valuable contribution made by our German visitor, Dr Obst, was particularly appreciated. The instantaneous English-German translation service which was provided, greatly facilitated discussions.

We present a discrete event simulator, TSJSim (Truck-Shovel JaamSim Simulator), for evaluating the stochastic and dynamic operational variables in a truck-shovel system. TSJSim offers four truck allocation strategies: Fixed truck assignment (FTA), Minimizing shovel production requirement (MSPR), Minimizing truck waiting time (MTWT), and Minimizing truck semi-cycle time (MTSCT) including the genetic algorithm (GA) optimization and the frozen dispatching algorithm (FDA) optimization rules. Multiple decision points along the haul routes for all the trucks close to the decision points were included in the model. The simulation results indicate that the trends associated with production tons and queuing time utilizing the four truck allocation strategies (MSPR, MTWT, FDA, and GA) all demonstrated similar patterns as the fleet size varied. As the system fleet size increased, the system production tons under these strategies at first increased significantly and then remained relatively constant; the queuing time relating to these strategies showed a positive relationship with the system fleet size. The bunching time decreased when the truck allocation strategies were applied in the model. In the simulated truck-shovel network system with multiple traffic intersections, by assigning the trucks at the intersections, both productivity and fleet utilization increased.
