"SUMMARYThis report on the characteristics of commercial aviation gasolines presents compilations of inspection test data furnished on their products by manufacturers of commercial grades of aviation gasoline, and special data obtained in Bureau of Mines laboratories on samples of these gasolines. Data and physical samples for the survey were submitted by 15 manufacturers on 18 grade 80, 21 grade 91/98, 22 grade 100/130, end 10 grade 115/145 aviation fuels.The inspection test data supplied by the participating manufacturers consist of octane and performance numbers, tetraethyllead content, dye color, and other characteristics usually listed in aviation gasoline specifications, such as AN-F-48a or ASTM Designation D910-47T. These data are tabulated and averaged by grades in tables 1 through 4 and, as reported, meet the AN-F-48a and similar specifications with a few exceptions. Two grade 80 gasolines show a lean-mixture octane rating slightly below 80.0, and 91/98 grade fuel shows a lean-mixture rating of 90.9 and a rich-mixture rating of 97.5, two 100/130 grade gasolines have a rich-mixture performance number slightly below 130.0, and one 115/145 grade gasoline shows a rich-mixture performance number of 144.5. However, octane and performance number averages are above the mini¬mum requirements for each grade. Tetraethyllead content in the 91/98 and 100/ 130 grades generally is above the maximum outlined in these specifications, whereas dye color for each of the four grades, with the exception of two gasolines in grades 80 and 100/130, is that designated for the particular grade. Distillation requirements, with a few exceptions at individual points, are met by gasolines of all grades. Reid-vapor-pressure, copper-dish-residue, heat-of-combustion or aniline-gravity-constant, freezing-point, and copper-strip-corrosion requirements are met by all gasolines so far as reported. No data for some of these tests wore submitted on a few of the gasolines. One gasoline, grade 115/145, shows a sulfur content greater than the specified maximum."

"IntroductionMassive sulphides occurring in metal mines are inflammable and furnish the fuel for many mine fires. Actual sampling has shown that dangerous amounts of sulphur dioxide and hydrogen sulphide may occur in mine atmospheres after blasting in massive sulphides. Probably some .of the finer sulphide in the material being blasted burns while it is in contact with the flame from the explosion. It’s also possible that oxygen of the explosive enters into the reaction.That sulphide dusts are explosive under some conditions has long been suspected, but the theory has not been generally accepted as having been proved. Evidence now at hand appears to be conclusive that such explosions do occasionally occur in mine workings in massive sulphides. Information from several mines working in heavy sulphides shows that occasionally, sulphur dioxide in larger amounts than could be expected from the blasting alone are occasionally thrown out into the mine atmosphere during blasting. Accidents have occurred and lives have been lost by men being caught in such gases. Also it appears in a few cases that damage done to timber in stopes by concussions has been greater than could 112.ve been expected from the regular blasts. In most of these cases the unusually large amounts of Sulphur dioxide could only be accounted for by an explosion or by an ignition of sulphide dusts. When this occurs it is probable that the settled dust is stirred up by the first shot of a round, then the dust cloud is ignited by this or a succeeding shot.In one instance, the senior author, while wearing breathing apparatus, returned to a station to take a gas sample immediately after a raise round had been blasted, and encountered a heavy white fume or smoke that was corrosive to the skin and which forced a retreat. The sample, which was taken farther back in a greatly diluted atmosphere, showed a high percentage (0.18) of sulphur dioxide. The station and the raise which was just being started were very dry and the walls and floor of the station contained settled sulphide dust which apparently was ignited by the blast."

"This study reports a new property of the important NAD(P)H-dependent flavoenzymes, glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase and ferredoxin- NADP oxidoreductase, that can catalyze a one electron reduction of metal ions such as chromium(VI) and vanadium(V). During the enzymatic reduction process, molecular oxygen is reduced to H2O 2 , which reacts with the reduced metal complexes to generate hydroxyl radicals. Since the hydroxyl radicals have been suggested to play an important role in Cr(VI) toxicity, this study provides a basis for a recent observation that Cr(VI) mutagenesis is strongly oxygen dependent. These results also point to an enzymatic pathway for the metabolism of some metal ions and concomitant generation of hydroxyl radicals. l. INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this communication is to report that some important NAD(P)H-dependent flavoenzymes (glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase and ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase) can catalyze one electron reduction of metal ions such as chromium(VI) and vanadium(V) and simultaneously reduce molecular oxygen to generate Hi02 and, eventually, the ""OH radical. This finding is significant because (i) the known substrates for the flavoenzymes are organic species and not metal ions, and (ii) the report on the enzymatic formation of the ""OH radical provides a new pathway for understanding the mechanism of genotoxicity of some non-ferrous metal ions. For example, it has been suggested that OH radical is likely to be the major species responsible for Cr(VI) genotoxicity [1-5). The 'OH radical is generated through the reaction of Cr(V) complexes with cellular Hi02 [4,5]. Cr(V) itself is known to be generated from Cr(VI) in various biological systems, in particular, microsomes [ 6), mitochondria [7] and mitochondrial electron transfer chain complexes [8]. However, no specific enzyme responsible for the Cr(V) generation has been identified except possibly glutathione reductase [4]. In this study we have used ESR and spin trapping techniques to show that the flavoenzymes can generate Cr(V) and provide a catalytic redox cycle for 'OH formation in such reactions. "SUMMARYA preliminary examination of the Buena Vista iron deposit was made in June 1942 by Paul E. Pesonen, mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines. Subsequent examinations were made by D. W. Butner, of the Bureau, in March 1943, and by the author in July 1944, who recommended exploration by diamond drilling, trenching, and sampling. Work on the project was done during the period March 28 to May 26, 1945.Property holdings, comprising 16 claims known as the Buena Vista group, are situated in sec. 4, T. 24 N., R. 34 E., Mount Diablo base and meridian, north Churchill County, about 37 miles east of Lovelock, Nev.Three diamond-drill holes totaling 575 feet were drilled; 45 small pits and ten trenches, totaling 435 linear feet, were excavated, and 84 channel samples totaling 862 feet were obtained under supervision of the Bureau.Purpose of the project was to determine the possible downward extension of the mineralized sections exposed in the outcrops and to determine grade of the ore.Bureau work was confined to one claim only - the Iron Mountain."

Thermal expansion and electrical resistance measurements were made on cerium metal from 4° to 300° K. The apparatus developed , including a specimen holder and a cryostat system , are described along with the experimental techniques used in obtaining the measurements . The total linear thermal expansion Data at of 99.83 weight - percent cerium metal between 4 ° K and room temperature was 4.24 percent . The resistivity at 4° K was 7.0 x 10-6 ohm- centimeter . 4° K indicate a fundamental relationship between residual resistivity and purity of cerium metal . The effects of annealing and repeated thermal cycling on resistivity were determined .

The Bureau of Mines investigated a HCI-02 leaching procedure to recover Cu, Ni, and Co from a low-grade bulk sulfide flotation concentrate prepared from the Duluth gabbro complex. Since the Duluth gabbro complex is the largest known and unexploited Ni resource in the United States, the development of options for extracting the metal values from the flotation concentrate of this domestic resource is necessary. Conditions were determined for producing a pregnant solution low in Fe to facilitate recovery of the metal values. Leaching experiments were conducted at 15 pct solids, 1000 to 1200 C, 0.2 to 0.3 g HCI per gram concentrate in a 50-gal reactor pressurized to 50 pSig with 02. Base metal extractions from the concentrate were, in percent, 90 to 92 Cu, 99 Ni, 97 to 99 Co, and 0.1 .Fe. Precious metals extractions were erratic and unpredictable; at best their extractions were, in percent, 55 Au, 90 Ag, 40 Pt, and 45 Pd. The reaction time at 1200 C was 0.5 h. The use of compressed air instead of 02 as the oxidant was also investigated. Solvent extraction using LIX 622 was used to remove Cu from the pregnant solution. Cementation on Cu was tested for precious metals recovery, while sulfide precipitation was used to produce a Ni-Co product. A conceptual flowsheet for treating the Duluth gabbro concentrate is proposed.

Steel tanks often corrode rapidly in oil fields where the gas produced with crude petroleum contains an appreciable quantity of hydrogen sulphide. In many instances working tanks have been discarded after only six months of service because of failure induced by corrosion. Aluminum has been used for some time in the fabrication of certain equipment incidental to the handling of oils containing hydrogen sulphide gas in solution, and has exhibited no serious corrosive action. These uses indicated that aluminum tanks might be equally effective in counteracting hydrogen sulphide corrosion. Consequently, in the spring of 1928, an all-aluminum stock tank of 500 barrels capacity and a "composite" tank of equal capacity, having a steel bottom and bottom ring and an aluminum top and top ring, were placed in service on the State-Lassiter lease of the Gulf Production Co. in Crane County, Tex. These tanks were under observation for one year, the test being sponsored by the Gulf Production Co., the Aluminum Co. of America, rind the Parkersburg Ric and Real Co. The results of this preliminary test sustained the belief that aluminum is highly resistant to hydrogen sulphide gas and likewise indicated the type or grade of aluminum which could be most economically used for lease tankage. However, in this preliminary test the Wake were not subjected to contact with the large quantities of highly concentrated brines such as often are associated and produced with crude oil. Therefore, it was suggested by representatives of .the Aluminum Co. that additional tests be made to include production conditions in which large quantities of brine would be handled, for past experience had shown that aluminum often is susceptible to the corrosive action of brines.

The purpose of this study was to determine mine workers' state of fie-fighting preparedness and the technology being used to detect and respond to underground coal mine fires. To investigate this problem, 214 underground coal miners were interviewed by U.S. Bureau of Mines researchers. Frequency distributions of workers' responses are presented in this report, along with segments of narrative accounts, to profile miners' fire-fighting capabilities. The data indicated that much variability exists from mine to mine and that there are several important changes operators may undertake in order to make miners better prepared to deal with fire underground: select appropriate sensors, establish and test a warning and communication protocol, construct a system capable of delivering hundreds of gallons of water per minute for sustained periods, institute formal fire preparedness audits, develop case studies of events that occur at an operation to use as teaching and assessment tools, and provide structured practice that can be incorporated into fire drills.

The heats of formation of seven substances were determined by solution calorimetry. At 298.15° K, the heat of formation of lithium sulfate from lithium, rhombic sulfur, and oxygen was -343.1 ± 0.7 kcal/mole, and the heat of formation of lithium sulfate monohydrate from lithium, rhombic sulfur, oxy-gen, and hydrogen was -414.3 ± 0.7 kcal/mo1e. For the silicates, the heats of formation at 298.15° K from the elements were kaliophilite, -503.8 ± 0.5 kcal/mole; leucite, -721.6 ± 0,8 kcal/mole; eucryptite, -505,2 ± 0.6 kcal/mole; alpha-spodumene, -727.9 ± 0.9 kcal/mole; and beta-spodumene, -721.1 ± 0.9 kcal/mole. The corresponding heats of formation at 298.15° K from the constituent oxides were kaliophilite, -42.7 ± 1.1 kca1/mole; leucite, -42.8 ± 1.1 kcal/mole; eucryptite, -16.1 ± 0.7 kcal/mole; alpha-spodumene, -21.0 ± 0.7 kcal/mo1e; and beta-spodumene, -14.3 ± 0.7 kcal/mo1e.

The Bureau of Mines developed a process using ion exchange to recover cobalt from spent copper leach solutions. A preliminary economic evaluation of the process indicated that about one-third of the capital cost was attributed to the total resin inventory, and one-third of the operating cost was required for reagents to remove iron from the ion-exchange eluates. An agitated Pachuca elution system was investigated in place of a fixed-bed elution system. The Pachuca system reduced the resin inventory by 27 pet when compared with the fixed-bed elution system. Processing fresh spent copper leach solution reduced the resin inventory by 20 pct and resin iron loading by 80 pct. Reagent requirements for removing iron from the eluates were decreased because less iron was extracted. The Pachuca system, along with processing fresh spent copper leach solution, reduced the total resin inventory by 47 pct. A revised cost evaluation of the cobalt recovery process was obtained to determine the effects of these process modifIcations. The estimated total capital cost for a plant processing 10,000 gpm of spent copper leach solution containing 26 ppm Co was $23.1 million. With credits for nickel, zinc, and copper byproducts, the estimated net operating cost was $5.10/lb of cobalt.

Upon review of German World War II mining practices and equipment for planning coal, the Federal Bureau of Mines initiated research leading to the development of a pneumatic planer for anthracite. The results of tests are reported in this manuscript. It was demonstrated (1) that hard anthracite can be planed and (2) that the design and operating requirements are within the limits of present-day engineering and technology. For hard anthracite, the depth of cut indicated is 4 to 6 inches; with a chain pull of 20 to 40 tons and the speed of planer travel of 18 to 20 feet per minute, a 40-hp. motor will be required for the planer hoist. Compressed-air requirements for the planer will be 250 to 300 c, f, m, at 60 to 70 p. s, i. It was learned that the length of the 4 individual sections of the planer should not exceed that of the individual troughs of the armored chain conveyor (5 feet in this instance); otherwise, bottom coal will be left in synclines, and the planer will override the conveyor at anticlines. Pneumatic pushers should be operated from a separate compressed-air line fitted with a pressure regulator. Results indicate that additional development work is warranted.

The panic bars (and associated linkages and electrical circuitry) that are defined in this document are a machine operator-actuated control for the emergency deenergization of the tram motors on self-propelled, electric and diesel face equipment; including haulage equipment such as shuttle cars. There are nine basic types of panic bars (and several variations) that are recommended in this document, but all of the panic bars arc characteristically of the 'fire door" type that is frequently encountered on outside exit doors of many public, and some commercial buildings. It is also the intent of the following panic bar designs that, when emergency brakes arc added to the face equipment machinery for which they arty required, that they be designed and hooked up so that actuation of the panic bar will result in automatic application of the emergency brakes (immediately following the deenergization of the tram motors). The following panic bar design requirements are a restatement of the proposed requirements defined in the Federal Register, requirements cited in "Guidelines for the Design and Installation of Devices for Deenergization of Self-Propelled Electric Face Equipment/Automatic Emergency Brakes" by C. E. Lester and J. D. Greenhalgh of MESA, and Bendix recommendations that were formulated as a result of discussions with personnel at the various machine manufacturers and underground coal mines that we surveyed, discussions with G. I. Judy (our consultant), etc:

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the role of imported natural flake graphites in dolomite-carbon refractories used in steelmaking processes and evaluated carbon fibers as a potential substitute. Varying quantities (1.5-30 pct) of natural flake graphite and carbon fibers were added to test samples. The effect of the additions on modulus of rupture (75°-2,750° F), deformation under load (2,750° F), and air-slag-metal resistance (3,000° F) was studied. Carbon purity of natural flake graphite additions did not influence hot strength, deformation under load, or air-slag-metal resistance. When the quantity of 90-pct-carbon graphite addition varied between o and 30 wt pct, hot strength was highest, deformation under load lowest, and air-slag-metal wear the least at 10 wt pct. As test temperature increased from 500° to 2,750° F, the hot strength difference became less. Carbon fiber additions were limited to 1.5 pct in dolomite-carbon brick. At this level, physical properties were generally comparable to those obtained with natural flake graphite, but were below values obtained with 10-pet-f1ake graphite additions. Carbon fibers are not considered a satisfactory substitute for natural flake graphite.

Recent studies suggest that trace metals emitted by internal combustion engines are derived mainly from combustion of lubrication oil. This hypothesis was examined by investigation of the formation of particulate matter emitted from an internal combustion engine in the absence of fuel-derived soot. Emissions from a modified CAT 3304 diesel engine fueled with hydrogen gas were characterized. The role of organic carbon and metals from lubrication oil on particle formation was investigated under selected engine conditions. The engine produced exhaust aerosol with log normal-size distributions and particle concentrations between 105 and 101 cm-3 with geometric mean diameters from 18 to 31 nm. The particles contained organic carbon, little or no elemental carbon, and a much larger percentage of metals than particles from diesel engines. The maximum total carbon emission rate was estimated at 1.08 g h-1, which is much lower than the emission rate of the original diesel engine. There was also evidence that less volatile elements, such as iron, self-nucleated to form nanoparticles, some of which survive the coagulation process.

The petrographic microscope plays an important role in the mineral dressing of nonmetallic materials. Petrographers and mineral technologists have evinced an interest in the technique developed, specifically, for mineral-dressing problems. The recession of 1974 continued into 1975. Real gross national product (GNP), measured in 1972 dollars, declined significantly in the first quarter of 1975 but rose slightly in the second and increased sharply in the third quarter. Unemployment peaked during the second quarter and then declined slowly for the balance of the year. The inflation rate declined owing to reduced demand and smaller-than-1974 increases in energy and food prices early in the year. Recovery was clearly evident by yearend, though un-employment and inflation remained at high levels. Total output as measured by the GNP in current dollars rose 6.5% in 1975. Real GNP declined 2.0%, and inflation, as measured by the implicit price deflator, increased 8.7%. Real gross private domestic investment for residential structures declined 18.1% in 1975, which was a smaller rate of decrease than the 27% decline in 1974. Real State and local Government purchases increased 2.4%, and real personal consumption expenditures for services rose 1. 7 %. The Federal Reserve Board (FRB) index of industrial production declined 9.7%.
