Using an automated drill test fooure, the U.S. Bureau of Mines measured the sound power levels produced by a small, pneumatic, rotary roof drill. A series of tests was conducted to determine (1) the relative effectiveness of several drill muffling schemes and (2) the relationship between drill sound power and pneumatic power supplied to the drill. The influence of rotation rate (i.e., airflow) and feed thrust on the penetration rate of the drill was also noted.

This publication has been prepared to supply manufacturers and industrial users a listing of mobile diesel-powered equipment and subassemblies approved and certified by the Bureau of Mines for use in nongassy noncoal mines and tunnels. This revised and supplemented listing supersedes an earlier publication2 released in 1963. Testing of diesel-powered equipment is one phase of the Bureau's program of health and safety that concerns approval of electrical and diesel equipment designed to prevent explosions, fires, shocks, or toxic hazards in underground mines, when such equipment is used and maintained properly. Manufacturers submit machinery and component parts to the Bureau for study of their design, safety features, and use. Equipment must pass exacting tests and must meet strict requirements established through research and experience and outlined in the Bureau's permissible schedules before the Bureau approves it for safe use in mines.

"The interaction of amorphous 1ilica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O, C2H5OH, C7H2NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy. It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction or surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C7H2NO > C2H5OH > H2O. Index Headings: Silica; Surface vibrational modes; Photoacoustic spectroscopy; Hydrogen bonding agents.INTRODUCTIONThe use of m spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature.1 2 For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1• Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-5 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity, 7- 9 catalysis, 10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8NO), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by m spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples11 have used transmission m spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties. In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18•19 Moreover, according to a recent paper, 20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry. In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H50H, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface m modes. Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents. Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16•17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification. The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to determine whether the use of chemical surfactants improves respirable coal dust control and is evaluating laboratory test criteria for selecting effective surfactants. This publication presents the results from wetting effectiveness tests with emphasis on the capillary rise test. The test variables investigated included coal particle size, type of surfactant, surfactant concentration, test duration, and mineral con-tent of the water. In addition to the rise test, measurements of con-tact angle, zeta potential, and sink time for various coal and surfactant combinations were conducted. No significant correlations among the four wetting tests were observed, a surprising result which implies that each test type measures specific aspects of the wetting phenomenon and also that each test type should only be used to select surfactants for specific applications. For example, the rise test shows solution penetration into porous materials, and the sink test discriminates among surfactants for dispersing finely ground materials into suspension. Another important conclusion is that combinations of agents retain their individual wetting properties, allowing mixtures to be for-mulated to perform well in both rise and sink tests.

Over a recent 20-month observation period, the U.S. Bureau of Mines obtained seismogram records from a single vertical-component, short-period seismometer installed at the surface of a metal mine in northern Idaho. The seismic events were analyzed for local (Richter) magnitude (M), time of occurrence, location, and relation to rock bursting and production blasting. Approximately 150 seismic events with -0.5 = M = 2.9 were located within the mine, yielding a b value (slope of the logarithm of the number of events with magnitude greater than M versus M) of 0.5. Event locations were constrained using a dense underground array of high-frequency accelerometers. Twenty of the surface-recorded events, with 0.5 = M = 2.9, were associated with rock bursts that produced damage requiring at least 1/2 day of cleanup and/or repair. Other possibly hazardous rock bursts, with magnitudes as small as -1.1, were numerous but were not associated with significant structural damage. Approximately 60 pct of the seismic events with M > -0.5 and 75 pct of damaging rock bursts occurred within 45 min of blasting. Estimates of characteristic rupture dimensions for rock bursts with -1.1 = M = 2.9, based on a conventional dislocation shear-slip model of failure, range from 3 to 300 m.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines publication is intended to provide mining industry representatives and regulatory authorities with a reference package dealing with studies on hydrology and underground mine subsidence. An annotated bibliography and a list of additional sources are given and represent references published prior to June 1993. Ninety-two references ware identified and 72 obtained for assessment. Annotating the references included evaluating the study methodology and summarizing the basic results. The references are also compiled based on geographic location to aid the user in identifying articles of particular interest.

This report on the bibliography of zirconium has been confined to those publications and patents that appear to be useful in the commercial development of the metal, both the malleable and the nonmalleable. The methods of production have been stressed and special attention has been given to the alloys. Compounds of importance, like the oxide and chloride, for the manufacture of the metal or of the alloys have been considered. The use of the oxide in refractories anal in the glass and porcelain industries has been omitted. The present survey is critical; that is to say, an attempt has been made to evaluate the effectiveness of suggestions made in the literature. The exhaustive work of Marden and Richy, Bureau of Mines Bulletin 186, published in 1921, has been taken as a base to start from with the intention of bringing the subject up to date with material published in the last 24 years. During this time there was considerable 'advance in the preparation of the metal and Its alloys, and in the development of new uses. On the other hand, there was little progress in the methods of decomposing the ores, so that the chapter on this latter phase is necessarily short.

To determine the behavior of chlorine in coal combustion, the Bureau of Mines burned 10 chlorine-containing coals, high-, medium-, and low-volatile, in a laboratory-scale pulverized-coal combustor. At carbon-combustion efficiencies of 94 to 98 percent, 1.6 to 7.1 percent of the chlorine or an average of 4 percent of the chlorine in the coal was retained in the ash; the balance, predominantly hydrogen chloride, was evolved in the combustion gas. Sulfur retention in the ash ranged from 2.3 to 10.7 percent or an average of 6.3 percent, Addition of alkali and alkaline earth carbonates to a medium-volatile coal containing 0.27 percent chlorine by preferentially reacting with the chlorine increased the Cl/S atom ratio in the ash, Lithium carbonate addition at 0.43 percent and K2C03 at 1.59 percent increased the C1/S ratio in the ash from 0.2 to 0.6.

Hydrogen sulfide was decomposed to elemental sulfur in an electrical discharge. With He, N., or Ar diluents, a threshold voltage between 1 and 3 kV was required for the decomposition reaction to occur in a laboratory ozonizer. Above the threshold voltage, the HAS decomposition rate increased with increasing voltage, but the increase was more pronounced with argon diluent than with either nitrogen or helium. In common with other reactions in an electrical discharge, the B2S decomposition decreased with increasing temperature in the range of -410 to +61° C. The reaction did not appear to be rate-controlled by a solid-gas sorption step because the introduction of activated charcoal into the electrical discharge zone did not significantly affect the decomposition yield. In the presence of polymeric chlorofluoro-carbon oil, 90 pct conversion of the 3 pct H2S in helium was obtained at 14 kV, 60 Hz, a 2-mm electrode gap, and a gas-residence time greater than 1 min. Under the same experimental conditions in the absence of oil, the conversion was only about 50 pct.

Electrical conductivities and densities of the LiF- UF , LiF- ThF4 , NaF - C1F4 , and NaF - ThF systems were measured as functions of composition and temperature . The specific conductance and density varied linearly with temperature . Molar and equivalent volumes , as well as heats of activation for conductance , were calculated from the experimental data . At 1,000 ° C , the molar volumes ranged from 16 to 40 cubic centimeters per mole and the specific conductance ranged from 9.8 to 2.5 per ohm- centimeter as the actinide metal fluoride concentration changed from 0 to 60 mole - percent . Heats of activation for conductance were 3 to 7 kcal per mole . The data are interpreted on the basis of a semilattice model for the melts .

Assessment of revegetation success on mined lands is a difficult, time consuming task and has been the subject of a number of controversies. Present regulations require that both plant cover and aboveground plant biomass be measured for use in making that assessment. Of these two variables, biomass is the most time consuming to measure and requires destructive sampling, a most undesirable requirement on fragile, recently revegetated areas. On the other hand, plant cover can be estimated using the point-frame method which is relatively nondestructive. In addition, vegetation can be sampled more uniformly with the point frame and in less time if species composition measures are to be made. A study was done to evaluate the predictability of aboveground biomass production on revegetated mined sites and adjacent native prairies using plant cover estimates made with the point frame method. The predictability of biomass production by cover estimates bears on the need for both measurements in assessing revegetation success. In general, a positive, statistically, significant correlation was demonstrated between plant cover (estimated by the point frame) and aboveground biomass (estimated by the harvest method) regardless of community type (mined or native), species composition, diversity or level of biomass production. However, the latter did have their effects on the relationship and must be accounted for in any predictive equations (that is to say, the predictive equations must be considered site-specific). Considering the relationship observed between the two parameters, cover estimation may be a sufficient indicator of revegetation success, especially where time and minimization of disturbance are critical.

Enthalpy and entropy increments above 298.15° K were determined for cop-per sulfate between 298° and 1,000° K and for copper oxysulfate between 2980 and 1,146° K by the method of copper-block drop calorimetry. Enthalpies, entropies, and heat capacities are tabulated for both compounds. In addition, free-energy functions are tabulated for the sulfate. Equations representing the enthalpies are given for each compound.

In connection with its research in producing synthetic liquid fuels from coal, the Federal Bureau of Mines studied reactions of iron and iron compounds with hydrogen and hydrogen sulfide in batch autoclaves. The Bureau hoped to gain indirect evidence regarding the chemical changes that iron catalysts undergo when they are used in the hydrogenation of coal. The information obtained may be helpful in identifying the active form or forms of iron catalysts. At 450° C., with hydrogen at hundreds of atmospheres and hydrogen sulfide at 1 or 2 atmospheres, the thermodynamically stable form of iron is ferrous sulfide in the case of the metal, magnetite, ferric oxide, ferrous sulfate, ferrous oxalate, or the chlorides of iron. However, complete conversion to ferrous sulfide was not achieved at temperatures of 400° to 500° C. for kinetic reasons. Extensive sulfiding of iron, magnetite, ferric oxide, and ferrous oxalate occurred below 400° C., and some conversion of ferrous sulfate to ferrous sulfide occurred at 400° C. In the hydrogenation of coal, ferrous sulfide is the form of iron likely to be available for heterogeneous catalysis when starting with the metal, oxide, sulfate, or oxalate.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the design and tests of a gage that will simultaneously measure the deformation of a borehole along three diameters 60 degrees apart; the measurements are in a single plane normal to the axis of the borehole. The inherent errors in measurement are considered together with the problems associated with the use of the gage in the relatively severe environments in and around mine openings. These problems were treated in the design and tests of the gage and the results establish that the gage can be used to satisfactorily is determine estimates of the stresses in rock.

This report is the fifth in a series presenting equilibrium vapor - liquid data for helium- bearing natural gases . It covers a 0.41 - mole - percent - helium natural gas that may be processed in the Department of the Interior's longrange helium conservation program . A Bureau of Mines phase equilibrium apparatus was used to obtain 139 samples of equilibrium vapor and liquid phases at 85 experimental conditions at temperatures from 0 ° to -299 ° F and at pressures from 100 to 500 psia . An appendix covers phase data at 100 , 200 , and 300 psia and at temperatures from -125 ° to -275 ° F for the dehydrated gas containing its original concentration ( 0.2 mole - percent ) of carbon dioxide , and the effect of a preliminary hydrocarbon trap upon subsequent vapor - liquid compositions .

Having established that sodium chloride reduces the incendivity of explosives, the Bureau of Mines studied the effect of sodium nitrate in reducing ignition hazards. Gallery experiments showed that sodium nitrate reduced the incendivity of certain explosives to 8 percent natural gas in air but increased their incendivity to coal dust predispersed in air. Laboratory experiments using hot jets from explosions of stoichiometric mixtures of methane-oxygen-nitrogen showed that both sodium chloride and sodium nitrate reduced the incendivity to methane, to mixtures of coal dust and methane) and to coal dust. The difference between the gallery and laboratory results with respect to coal dust is attributed to temperature-time effects.

The International Intercalibration and Intercomparison Program (HIP), consisting of several selected laboratories from four countries, held a radon progeny intercomparison measurement at the U.S. Bureau of Mines experimental Twilight Mine on September 12-14, 1988. Grab samples were taken at four different conditions of low and high radon progeny and condensation nuclei concentrations, respectively. The results showed good agreement among all seven participants. The coefficient of variation of all measurements was 4.7%; after minor corrections for flows and some systematic biases, it was reduced to 3.2%.

Mineral analyses and electrical resistivity measurements of 324 representative samples of oilfield brines from 24 oil-productive counties in Mississippi and Alabama are presented in tabular form. Results of the mineral analyses, which include calcium, magnesium, carbonates, bicarbonates, sulfates, chlorides, sodium, and barium (with strontium if present), are reported in milligrams per liter. Electrical resistivity measurements in ohm-meter2 per meter at 75° F are reported in ohm-meters in the tables. Chemical analyses of formation waters are helpful to operators having water problems associated with petroleum recovery; electrical resistivity values are helpful in making interpretations from electric logs.

Aragonite, co-occurring with calcite and dolomite as matrix minerals, has been discovered in Mahogany zone oil shales of Colorado's Eocene Green River Formation, posing puzzles on the geochemical patterns of their separate origins, reasons for their simultaneous existence, and their interrelation. The presence of aragonite is demonstrated by X-ray diffraction. Amounts of aragonite and dolomite are significantly and inversely related, but the calcite quantity is essentially independent of either aragonite or dolomite quantity. A geochemical pattern outlining the deposition conditions that created the Green River Formation oil shale is postulated from characteristics of the oil shale. The development of the three separate carbonates--aragonite, calcite, and dolomite--the inverse relationship between aragonite and dolomite, and the independence of amounts of calcite and the other two carbonates are shown to be natural consequences of this oil-shale genesis pattern.
