A pilot-scale treatment study was conducted on a copper-zinc bearing metal mine drainage using a pipeline treatment system called the In-Line System (ILS). The objective of this U.S. Bureau of Mines study was to determine whether the ILS could be extended from the treatment of coal mine drainages to the treatment of metal mine drainages. Hydrated lime (Ca(OH)2), quick lime (CaO), and caustic soda (NaOH) were used to neutralize the drainage. A novel reagent slurry of Ca(OH)2 and type C fly ash was also evaluated. Except for Ca(OH)2-fly ash slurry, treatment performance was evaluated for all reagents at pH values of 7,8,9, and 10. The Ca(OH)2-fly ash slurry was evaluated at a pH of 10. All reagents tested neutralized the metal mine drainage and substantially reduced the dissolved metal concentrations. It was concluded that the ILS could be useful in the treatment of metal mine drainages.

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United states was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United states Department of the Interior. This paper is a continuation of a series made in cooperation with the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC). Inc. The first of this series of reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36, and succeeding reports described motor gasolines sold during the summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941. No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-431' the semiannual reports were resumed.

The objective of this project was to improve a driver's field of view for large trucks used in the mining industry. Rearward viewing was enhanced by improving the rear-view mirror designs. Rear vision was accomplished using a closed circuit television system. Views ahead,, to the right, and downward were obtained with a blind area viewer (BAV). The BAV is a unique combination of fresnel lenses housed in a shielded, environmentally protected enclosure that produces an image of the area in front of and downward 70° and to either side of the BAV 300. The improved visibility devices were evaluated by long-term, in-mine testing. The right Bide mirror (RSM) and BAV provide the greatest improvements for the least cost and are commercially available. Application of the RSM and BAV should achieve a reduction in accident potential and greater vehicle productivity by enlarging and improving the equipment operator's visibility and making priviously blind areas and hazardous situations detectable.

In its investigation of old, abandoned, lead-zinc mines at which records of operations are not available, in 1914 the Bureau of Mines dug surface trenches anti', in 1947 It diamond-drilled three holes at the Albright Farm deposit in Sinking Valley. Some good lead-zinc ore had been extracted from veins in dolomitic limestone during the time of the American Revolution and as late as 1870. Since that time the only activity was sporadic prospecting and developing. Thu Bureau of Mines disclosed two additional veins by surface trenching, but diamond drilling failed to find significant lead-zinc mineralization.

"The tests described in this paper were conducted under the sponsorship of Subcommittee VII on Pulverizing Characteristics of Coal, a subcommittee of Committee D-5 on Coal and Coke, American Society for Testing Materials, with a view to evaluating various laboratory procedures for testing grindability of coal in connection with commercial pulverization of coal for use as powdered fuel. The subcommittee, at a meeting in New York City on February 21, 1934, selected for test four methods that had been developed during the past few years for testing grindabilitay of coal and were being used by coal-testing laboratories in the United States and Canada. These methods are:Bureau of Mines method, Cross method, Fuel Research Laboratory method, and Hardgrove method. Subcommittee VII agreed that the grindability tests should be made on five coals selected to cover a wide range of hardness. The Pittsburgh Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines, was asked to direct the investigation and to prepare representative samples of the coals. Laboratories of the fol. lowing institutions and companies agreed to cooperate by making grindability tests: Babcock & Wilcox Co., Foster Wheeler Corporation, Fuel Engineering Co., of New York, Fuel Research Laboratory of the Canada Department of Mines, and Northwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSHelpful suggestions in planning the investigation were made by A. The U. S. Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 placed limits on the permissible concentration of airborne respirable coal mine dust. Evidence exists which suggests that the effects on health of respirable coal mine dust may depend on both host factors and dust properties other than concentration. Dust particle size, shape, density, specific surface area and chemical composition are among the dust parameters of interest in an epidemiological investigation of coal workers' pneumoconiosis and coal miner exposure to mine dust. The purpose of this investigation was to develop and demonstrate the feasibility of techniques to determine selected properties of respirable coal mine dust. An approved underground horizontal elutriator which samples air at 36 cfm was designed, fabricated and utilized in this study to collect respirable coal mine dust in three mines representing the Pittsburgh, Lower Freeport and Lower Kittanning coal seams. Analytical procedures for measurement of respirable dust sample particle size, density, random projected area, total surface area and chemical composition are presented. Results of analyses of three samples collected in each mine are presented. Up to five full work shifts of sampling were required to accumulate approximately five grams of respirable coal mine dust in each sample. Statistical tests were applied to determine the significance of differences between properties of dust samples collected in the same mine and between arithmetic mean values of dust properties representing three samples collected in each mine. The solubility characteristics of three calcium aluminates , 12Ca0 · 7A120½ 3Ca0 A1203 , and 4Ca0 A12 03 Fe2O3 , were determined in water and in solutions of NaOH and Na₂ CO₂ to more clearly define their role in relation to the recovery of aluminum by the lime sinter and the lime - soda sinter processes . The calcium aluminates were prepared by sintering stoichiometric mixtures of CaCO3 , Al2O3 3H20, and Fe 0 at 1,375 ° C. The rates and extent of aluminum extractions were determined . The aluminum extractions from the aluminates were dependent on the presence of carbonate ions in the leach solutions , temperature , time , leach solution composition , and solid - liquid ratio of the slurry . The aluminum extracted from the calcium aluminates in water and in NaOH solutions varied from 4.6 to 22.9 percent . Virtually , complete extraction could generally be obtained for 12Ca0.7A120 and 4Ca0.A12 03 • Fe₂ 03 ; in one instance it was obtained for 3Ca0.A1203 , when an excess of carbonate ions was present over that required for the conversion of all of the calcium in the aluminates into CaCO3 . In some cases of poor aluminum recoveries , extractions could be improved by regrinding and releaching the solid residues .

The Bahama's petroleum-dominated minerals sector constricted again in 1985. The declines were mostly the result of a soft market demand for crude oil and petroleum products. In early 1984, it was a growing unprofitability that prompted Charter Oil Co. to cease using the 350,000-barrel-per-day Bahamas Oil Refining Co. facility that it jointly owns with Chevron Oil Bahamas Ltd. After midyear 1985, because of poor petroleum economics, Chevron announced it would close the refinery, leaving only a maintenance crew. In 1984, the refinery exported less than 26 million barrels of petroleum products. Chevron's throughput was reported as averaging about 8,000 barrels per day at the time of the announcement. The crude oil transshipment terminal also registered declining activity and financial losses in 1984 and 1985. Transshipments of petroleum in 1985 amounted to about 100,000 barrels per day, one-half as much as in 1982.

Cancrinite is one eonstituentof "red muds," a high-volume waste product of alumina production by the Bayer process. The Bureau of Mines determined the thermochemical properties of cancrinite as part of a program to provide such data for minerals of industrial importance. Cancrinite [Na7.68(A16Si6024)(N03)1.68 (H2O)4.1] was synthesized by reacting aluminum silicate gel with a solution of NaOH and NaN03, and the composition was determined by chemical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. The heat of solution was determined by hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry. The standard enthalpy of formation at 298.15 K, ?Hf°298, is ?Hf°298 = -3,487.97 ±2.6 kcal/mol, and the standard enthalpy of formation from the oxides and NaN03, ?H°298, is ?H°298 = -215.20 ±l.8 kcal/mol.

"INTRODUCTION This report contains information on the approximate size of the smallest dust Particles revealed by or the limit of visibility of various microscopic systems. The information was obtained mainly for use in interpreting and evaluating results of number-contentration and particle-size, determinations on, samples of unhygienic particulate matter collected from industrial atmospheres and in developing better methods for determinations nations.Some speculation and even controversy have been published on the limit of visibility of the widely used microscopic system (16-mm., 0.25-or 0.3-N.A. objective, and axial light-field illumination) used in counting the dust in the liquid medium from impinger, 4/ 5/ filter-paper, 6/ and other samples, but little or no quantitative data have been published on the limits of visibility of this or other microscopic' system.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe interest, encouragement, and assistance received from H. A review was made of two Russian books and a chapter from a third book dealing with pipeline transport of coal. Emphasis was placed on hydrotransport of coarse coal in underground mines or surface pipelines. The books reviewed were: "Means of Increasing the Effectiveness of Hydrotransport," by V. N. Pokrovskaya (1972), "Parameters and Modes of Hydraulic Transport of Coal" by V. V. Traynis (1970), and the chapter "Calculations of Hydrotransport of Useful Minerals and Waste Rock" from the book "Hydromechanization of Opencast Workings" by G. A. Nurok (1970). All three are unique and useful additions to the world literature on hydrotransport. The Traynis book reveals the development and results of circular wheel stand tests to simulate hydrotransport in horizontal pipes, which is a potentially outstanding contribution to slurry pipeline technology. Graphical data and equations are presented which suggest that headlosses for coarse coal can be predicted with good accuracy for pipe sizes up to 14 inches in diameter. Wheel stands permit tests for pipe wear and lump degradation without recycling coal through pumps. Recommendations are made for wheel stand tests and for correlation of existing data.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a chromatographic method for analyzing impurities in helium that utilizes a helium carrier gas contain-ing 25 to 30 ppm Ne. An example of the effect of trace amounts of nitrogen, methane, and moisture on the detector's response is shown. The added neon in the carrier does away with irregularities of the analysis which were experienced when the carrier contained up to 3 ppm Ne. The addition of 25 to 30 ppm Ne causes a loss of sensitivity, but the re-maining sensitivity is adequate for routine analyses. The high-neon carrier allows positive and more linear responses for eight impurities: neon, hydrogen, argon, oxygen, nitrogen, methane, carbon dioxide, and ethane. Neon concentration levels of 0.02 to 125 ppm in helium carrier gases were studied. The high-neon carrier has been in successful rou-tine use in Bureau of Mines helium facilities since October 1981.

In January, 1922, a conference relative to trailing cables for use with permissible mining machines was held at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. At this conference it was recommended that the bureau take steps to investigate the rubber-sheathed type of cables and to bring about the establishment of a list of approved cables. Effective until such time as a complete investigation could be made, the bureau asked the several manufacturers holding approvals for mining machines to recommend cables for use with their machines. In general the cables recommended were tentatively approved. Due to the lack of available personnel, no actual tests of cables were made until mid-1927. Meanwhile a field investigation of trailing cables was made at 20 mines of three coal companies in western Pennsylvania, and samples of cables were obtained from the manufacturers for laboratory tests. Twenty-five samples of the concentric-type cable, representing the product of five manufacturers, were obtained for the tests. These cables were of four sizes, as follows: 3 cables of No. 2 B & S gage, 17 cables of No. 3 B & S gage, 3 cables of No. 4 B & S gage, and 2 cables of No. 6 B & S gage.

When a company develops a mineral property in a remote area of Alaska, it must consider how best to house its personnel. This Bureau of Mines report examines the economics of two options: company towns and company camps. The price required to maintain a 15% discounted-cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR) was derived for hypothetical 1,000-st/d cut-and-fill mines and 50,000-st/d open-pit mines located in three different regions of the State, One set of hypothetical mines utilizes a townsite; the other utilizes a relatively new concept, a fly-in camp or commuting operation, in which two shifts of employees operate the mine and all associated facilities for 1 week before being replaced by a second crew. The study shows that operating costs were higher for mines employing the commuting option than for mines having a company town because of the additional wages paid for overtime hours; however, the price required to obtain a 15% DCFROR for the single-product copper concentrate, f.0.b. the mill site, was significantly lower owing to the lower investment costs for the camp-type operation. The economic advantage for those mines utilizing the camp increases from south to north and from the coast toward the interior.

As part of a continuing program of evaluating the Nation's crude-oil resource, this report presents information pertaining to resource, primary reserve, and potential waterflood reserve for 3,209 selected reservoirs contained in 24 oil-producing States, as of January 1, 1968. To that date the selected reservoirs had not been subjected to pressure-maintenance or secondary-recovery operations. These reservoirs also met the following parameters: (1) a minimum of five oil-producing wells on January 1, 1968, (2) a minimum of 50 acres areal extent, (3) a minimum of 50,000 bbl of oil ultimate primary recovery, and (4) the principal reservoir energy was other than active water encroachment. The selected 3,209 reservoirs produced 527 million bbl of oil in 1967, about 17 pct of U.S, total production. Primary oil reserve was 4,983 million stb; in addition, there was 6,043 million stb of potential water- flood oil reserve. Oil resource in the selected reservoirs was 59,547 million stb. A brief history and outlook of waterflooding are presented for each State. Depth and producing rate statistics and geologic distributions of production, resource, reserve, and potential waterflood reserve for the selected reservoirs are presented by States in the appendix. Also included in the appendix are description, history, and technique modifications of waterflooding, and a preliminary cost estimate of a closed-system water-injection project.

This marks the 100th year that the aggregate industry has been served by a national association. Of all the accomplishments this longstanding relationship has achieved, there is probably none greater than the progress made, in worker safety. Perhaps the best way to measure this success is to examine injury trends in the aggregate miner population. For example, in the first half of the 20th [ ] century, 16 quarry mining disasters (a "disaster" is an incident with five or more fatalities) claimed 157 miners between 1909 and 1952. The largest of these was the disaster at the Sandts Eddy Limestone Quarry near Allentown, Pa., on March 26, 1942, where 31 miners died of asphyxiation by fumes/explosion. Thankfully, no mining disasters have occurred in the aggregate industry since 1952. It is these kinds of information that help us characterize improvements in aggregate worker safety over the last 100 years.

This report provides information on the techniques and results obtained on representative waterflooding projects in Cowley County, Kans. Records show that waterflooding was begun as early as 1935, but not until 1948 was the method expanded. The greater depths to the oil-producing formations in this area compared to those in eastern Kansas undoubtedly delayed the widespread use of secondary-recovery methods. This report presents a discussion of four waterflooding projects in Cowley County, Kans. The locations of these projects are shown in figure 1. The projects have been in operation from 1 to 7 years and have produced more than 1 million barrels of additional oil by injecting 11.5 million barrels of water. The projects are designed to take advantage of elevation and height of the separator tank to collect by gravity flow the produced brine at the respective treating or storage tanks. The closed-type water system is used on three of the projects and an open-type water conditioning system on the fourth. On one of the projects, which was drilled along a narrow shoestring formation, alternate well, were converted to input wells. However, most of the input wells for flooding converted producing wells.

This report presents the results of an investigation in Which the chloroform solubilities of coals and chars are related to rank, temperature of thermal treatment, time at a given temperature, vacuum thermal treatment, plasticity, oxidation, blending, and mass spectral analyses and molecular weights of the extracts. It was found that the quantity of chloroform extract obtained from chars can be altered by creating a vacuum above the charge during preparation of the char, increasing the time at temperatures within the plastic temperature range, and by utilizing different rates of heating to attain a given temperature. Relationships found between the chloroform solubilities of chars produced at temperatures within the plastic temperature range and the relative fluidities in this temperature range indicate that the chloroform-soluble portion of the char is a significant component of the plastic mass. Chloroform-extract yields from chars made from blends of coals cannot be calculated from chloroform-extract yields obtained from chars made from the component coals.
