In the course of, investigation of domestic manganese-mineral occurrences, examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected 2-ton lots of ore from properties in the Cleveland-district, Idaho. As only one of the ores was high enough in grade for direct marketing to-producers of ferromanganese, ore-dressing concentration methods were investigated to determine their amenability to treatment. High-grade ore. (38.7 percent Mn) from the Idaho Manganese Mining Co. was taken from a replacement deposit in limestone consisting of several horizontal beds 1 to 5 feet thick, about 1 mile northeast of Cleveland. The manganese minerals occur as an intimate intergrowth of manganese oxides, containing minor amounts of limonite, ?quartz, and calcite as rather fine inclusions. However, the major contaminants are claylike products of rock decomposition, which can be eliminated by thorough washing of the ore at relatively coarse sizes. The Hot Spot property is 1 mile south of Cleveland. The ore occurs as a replacement deposit of medium-grade- ore in limestone, .The sample taken by the Bureau of Mines assayed 26.0 percent Mn. The manganese minerals consist of nodules, principally pyrolusite with some psilomelane and manganite embedded in wad.' The low-grade wad, containing manganese and siliceous minerals in intimate association, was easily rejected by washing.

The Millet copper deposit is on the north shore of Iliamna Lake in southwestern Alaska. Copper mineralization occurs in a zone of altered limestone .adjacent to and intruded by a diorite porphyry with some diabase facies. During 1949 and 1950, the Bureau of Mines investigated this prospect as a part of the U. S. Department of the Interior program in Alaska for the development of critical and strategic minerals. Field work was begun August 8, 1949; it was recessed November 28, 1949, because of inclement weather. The work was resumed Nay 28, 1950, and completed July 3, 1950. The program of investigation by the Bureau of Nines included topographic surveying, machine and hand trenching, diamond drilling, and sampling the zones of mineralization. This report outlines the general geology of the area, gives a description of the deposit, and contains the factual data resulting from work by the Bureau of Mines.

An investigation of hazardous surface openings of abandoned and inactive underground mines in the Black Hills area of South Dakota has revealed: (1) tracing legal ownership of mineral claims via county courthouses is confusing, complex, and oftentimes misleading, (2) in general, the selected mine openings in this investigation are to be considered relatively high in risks and hazard potential which poses a threat to the general public, (3) mine closure procedures and designs can generally be categorically implemented depending on the overall situation of the particular mine opening with subsequent unit costs estimates, (4) few preventive state or federal legal measures exist to date concerning mine closures, and (5) liability damages relating to mine opening accidents usually involve expensive and complex common law cases.

Need for lightweight building materials was created in the latter part of the nineteenth century by a radical change in building design in which dead load or structural weight was transferred from thick, heavy, load- bearing walls of former construction practice to a load-carrying framework of beams and columns with thin walls. This new design was brought about by the introduction of structural steel followed by reinforced concrete and structural concrete as materials for the erection of the load-supporting frame. The new materials and method of construction made possible the erection of skyscrapers and the building of bridges with long spans, and made feasible additions of one or more floors to existing buildings. As size and design of the load-bearing framework are controlled chiefly by dead load, the natural result was a. search for and use of light- weight materials in partitions, floors, and exterior walls. However, these thin walls created problems of heat and sound. insulation, so that building materials which possessed good heat- and sound-insulating properties in addition to light weight were objects of extensive research. One group of materials developed to fill this need comprised lightweight concretes, of which some were obtained by the use of lightweight aggregates. Although the advantages of lightweight.materials were evident from the first skyscrapers, there was a transition.stage.between the old bearing- wall and modern skeleton-frame types of building, with the heavy and massive construction of the former superimposed upon the latter. Hence, it was not until the period between 1910 and 1930 that the new lightweight concretes were recognized and used more extensively in the erection of large, nonresidential buildings. From this type of construction, light- weight-aggregate concretes entered-fields of residential and small non- residential building; in which they were found desirable for production of prefabricated, large-size; masonry units. Although the weight of each unit was reduced sufficiently to enable one man to handle it easily, properties of the new concretes other than light weight were the principal factors in the ready acceptance of these new materials in residential building. Manufacture of precast units includes complete lines of masonry and back-up blocks, bricks; floor beams, columns and partition, roof, and floor tiles and slabs. Recent improvements in casting machinery, development of the vibration-pressure machine, and a more thorough study and knowledge of the requirements and properties of the concrete mix have all contributed materially to the rapid expansion in use of lightweight aggregates in this industry.

Zinc smelting is frequently termed a ba.ckward art. The term is hardly true, for great progress has been made in recent years in the design and in the thermal efficiency of the retort furnace, in the quality of retorts, in the recovery of zinc, and in the ability to treat more impure and complex ores. The fact remains, however, that the peculiar physical and chemical properties of zinc have delayed such immense advances-large smelting units, high recovery, lowunit costs, and ability to treat low-grade ores-as have been made in the metallurgy of lead and copper. In current retort-smelting practice, the ores, if carbonates, are calcined to remove carbon dioxide; or, if sulphides, are roasted to remove sulphur. The sulphur must be eliminated as completely as possible, usually to less than 1 per cent. This means that the roast must be continued for a long time at a high temperature, with resulting high cost and small capacity per furnace. The roasted ore is mixed with about 50 per cent of its weight of reducer, which may be fine coke, anthracite, or nonbituminous coal. This mixture is charged into horizontal fire-clay retorts. The retorts used in this country are about 8 inches in internal diameter by 4 feet in length and hold 50 or 60 pou~ds of ore. The diameter of the retort is limited by the tirrie required for the heat to penetrate to the center of the charge; the length by the strength of the retort, which at the high temperature employed can not support the weight of the charge if the span is more than about 50 inches. The retorts are heated externally by coal, natural gas, qr ·producer gas to a temperature of 1,200° C. or more. The zinc oxide is reduced to zinc, which is volatile at this temperature, and passes into a conical fire-clay condenser. attached to one end of the retort, where it conde_nses to liquid zinc and is removed. Twenty-four hours are required for distillation, and because of the low heat conductivity of the retort walls 11.nd of the ore charge itself, the heat efficiency even of the most modern regenerative furnacei;; is only about 12 per cent. The retorts have a short life, 30 to 6Q days, at the high temperature required-; zinc losses are heavy, usually 10 per cent or more; and the proportion of impurities in the retort charge must be carefully controlled to prevent the rapid corrosion of retorts. For these reasons, much work has been done in an e:ff ort to, find cheaper and more efficient methods o.f recovering zinc from its ores. Various methods have been proposed for smelting in the blast furnace. Some of these contemplated the production of zinc vapor and its condensation to liquid; others attempted to produce liquid zinc directly by smelting under pressure. It is now realized that fundamental difficulties render these proposals impracticable. The electric furnace for smelting offers obvious advantages in the way of the efficient utilization of energy, large units, easy attainment of high temperatures, and the possibility of treating complex ores. E. H. and A. H. Cowles first suggested a design for an electric furnace for the reduction of zinc ores and patented their process in 1885. Their attention was soon directed to other uses for their furnace and nothing further of importance was done in the electric smelting of zinc until about 1900. Several investigators then started work upon various processes and had more or less success. The chief difficulty they encountered was the impossibility of obtaining more, than a small amount of the zinc as liquid metal because most of the zinc vapor condensed as blue powder. Interest in the electrothermic metallurgy of zinc increased, many patents on processes and furnace design were taken out, and the literature on the subject grew, until in 1914 and 1915 the problem seemed to be approaching solution. About this time the hydrometallurgy of zinc, the development of which had been lagging somewhat behind that of the electrothermic metallurgy, sprang into the limelight and a commercial process was soon perfected. This rapid development, perhaps aided by the war premium on the high-grade spelter produced by electrolytic deposition, distracted attention from electric smelting to some extent, though progress continued. With the perfection and standardization of the electrolytic process has come a better realization of its limitations, especially the necessity for large-scale operation ·and the difficulty of obtaining high extraction. Because of these limitations the electrothermic metallurgy of zinc still has a field of its own and in fac-t promises to become a strong competitor of both hydrometallurgy and retort smelting except under conditions highly favorable to the latter methods. Because of the imperfections of the retort and electrolytic processes and the promise that the electric furnace offers in overcoming these imperfections, the. United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, has undertaken a study of the electrothermic metallurgy of zinc.

"INTRODUCTION Clay beds of southwestern North Dakota were investigated to determine (1) the average alumina content of the clays in four principal areas of occurrence, (2.) which, if any, would be the most feasible method of extracting alumina from the clays, and (3) whether the clays had any other commercial uses.During the investigation exposed sedimentary beds were examined for clay and the thickness and areal extent of outcropping clay beds in the more promising areas were measured. Four-principal areas of bentonitic clays, comprising 6,967 acres in Stark, Slope; and Billings Counties, N. The 34 years from 1910 to 1943, for which statistics are presented herein, comprise periods of uneventful peace, unparalleled prosperity, industrial depression almost to the point of stagnation, and two wars of world proportions.

Modern high-temperature metallurgical processes have created a demand for raw material for furnace parts and lining that not only will with-stand high temperatures is but will not react with the substance being melted in the furnace. The quantitative separation of tantalum from columbium has been obtained through several liquid-liquid extraction processes. The valuable metals are separated by selective extraction from organic feed solution using a mineral acid or by selective extraction from aqueous feed solutions employing an organic solvent. The greatest degree of separation was obtained when organic ketones, particularly methyl isobutyl ketone, were used. Approximately 200 combinations of various organic solvents and mineral acids were tested as possible separation systems in which the tantalum or columbium content was extracted from organic solutions of the anhydrous pentachlorides.

This report documents the research efforts that were undertaken to design, install and test noise abatement devices for use on off-highway haul trucks operating in surface mines. The objective of the program was to reduce the environmental noise from haul trucks. The noise reduction devices that were developed utilized existing technology and were tested on a 50-ton haul truck. The efforts emphasized the reduction of noise emitted from the engine compartment which included the use of side shields, sound absorbing material, improved radiator shroud design, and a modulating clutch fan. Noise tests were conducted using modified SAE test procedures for measuring sound levels around a stationary and moving machine, and inside of the operators compartment. Test results showed a maximum of 4 dB(A) reduction measured 16 feet from the truck. Interior cab noise was reduced 6 dB(A) with the windows and vents closed.

"Lee, Yu-Chen, and D. Eugene Rannels. Alveolar macrophages modulate the epithelial cell response to coal dust in vitro. Am. J. Physicl. 270 (Lung Cell. Mol. Physiol. 14): L123-L132, 1996.-The response of the alveolar epithelium to coal dust exposure is poorly understood. Coal or other dusts may act on the epithelium directly or indirectly through nearby alveolar macrophages (AM) that produce cytokines and other soluble products. AM and type II pneumocytes (T2P) were thus exposed to dust in coculture to evaluate their possible interactions. Anthracite coal dust PSOC 867 increased synthesis of extracellular matrix (ECM) components by T2P. AM alone did not produce ECM. Similarly, coculture ofT2P with AM (3.75:1) had little effect on epithelial ECM synthesis. In contrast, coculture ofT2P with AM significantly increased PSOC 867 effects on T2P rates of ECM synthesis, ECM fibronectin content, and T2P levels of fibronectin mRNA. AM-conditioned medium did not change the PSOC 867 effect on T2P. Neither control nor PSOC 867-treated AM on Falcon culture inserts (0.45-µm pore size) over T2P stimulated ECM synthesis by either untreated or dust-exposed epithelium. Thus AM-mediated changes in ECM synthesis by PSOC 867-treated T2P require close cell-cell interactions, suggesting a role for cell-cell contact or for short-lived soluble mediators of the AM effects. DEVELOPMENT OF PNEUMOCONIOSIS, a chronic disease of coal workers that results in pulmonary fibrosis and low lung compliance, is associated with inhalation of mineral or coal dust in the work place (14). Although the pathology of pneumoconiosis has been studied extensively, cellular mechanisms that cause changes in lung structure and function are not fully understood. Particulate matter that enters the respiratory system distributes according to size, with larger particles being removed in proximal airways. Dust components of small size may enter distal alveolar region, which is populated by two types of epithelial cells, type I and - type II cells, and by alveolar macrophages (16). Each of these cell types may interact with inhaled particles, but only the effects of coal dust on alveolar macrophages have been studied extensively. Less is known regarding the response of the alveolar epithelium, or of effects on epithelial cell-alveolar macrophage interactions, in the dust-exposed lung.Function of the alveolar epithelium is well known to be influenced by the underlying basement membrane, or extracellular matrix (28). Alveolar epithelial cell extracellular matrix interactions, which may involve modulation of cell migration, attachment, or differentiation (17), are reflected in type II cell morphology, metabolism, secretory activity, hormone responsiveness, lamellar body content, and gene expression (21). The extent to which basement membrane modulates differentiation of the overlying epithelium is determined by both molecular composition and three-dimensional structure of the matrix. Type II epithelial cells in vitro synthesize, secrete, assemble, and degrade a variety of basement membrane components, including laminin, fibronectin, type IV collagen, and thrombospondin (22, 27). How expression of these components is regulated, directly or indirectly, upon exposure of the alveolar epithelium to injury by coal dust or by other particulates remains to be resolved."

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the thirteenth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project, except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The description of the deposits developed is followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

This paper describes the pumping operations at the Ajax, Cresson, and Vindicator dines in the Cripple Creek mining district of Colorado during the summer of 1936. At that time the three mines wore pumping 6,500 gallons of water per minute into the Roosevelt drainage tunnel. Cripple Creek is the most important gold district in the State; it has yielded gold valued at over $365,000,000. The mines engaged in pumping are among the largest producing properties in the district. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The author wishes to acknowledge the friendly cooperation of mine officials at the properties visited. At the. Ajax mine information was courteously given by Clayton Kissel, mine superintendent, and his staff; R. Y. Roby contributed the drawings. The Bureau of Mines investigated the ZnO-Fe2O3-Fe3O4 system at 1,000°, 1,300°, and 1,400° C, with oxygen pressures between 1.0 and lx10-4 atmospheres. The results, divided into the thermodynamic properties as related to the spinel structure, and the thermodynamic properties as related to zinc concentrate roasting, were used to calculate the activities of ZnO, Fe2O4, and Fe3O4 within the spinel solid solution region of the ternary system, and the pseudo-binary activities of ZnFe2O4 and Fe304. The activities of both systems show large positive deviations from Raoult's Law, especially at high Fe3O4 concentrations. The free energies, the enthalpies, and the entropies of mixing for the binary system were calculated from the binary activities, and the entropies of mixing were compared with two statistical models, one representing an ideal solution, and one representing the mixing of a normal with an inverse spinel. The binary entropy of mixing seemed to be better represented by the latter statistical model, indicating that the tetrahedral and octahedral cations of the reactants tend to remain in the product, even at the high temperatures of the study. This comparison also indicated that the cations of the components are the major contributing factors to the thermodynamic properties.

During the first quarter of 1973 ADL worked closely with PMSRC staff, under an extremely compressed time schedule, on all aspects of the detailed planning, organization and overall coordination and preparation of the lectures and in-mine demonstrations for the Bureau's Technology Transfer Seminar on Mine Communications given in March of 1973 to representatives of the mining industry. Our efforts centered on the detailed organization and preparation of each of the five technical seminar lectures and associated supporting material, and the coordination of tasks assigned to ADL and other seminar participants. Revised and expanded drafts of the seminar papers were prepared from rough draft versions obtained from PMSRC, Collins Radio and ADL staff. Measurements were made to gather key data on the operation and performance of each of the following systems installed in the Bruceton Safety Research Mine; call alert paging, roof bolt paging, section wireless radio, and guided wireless radio systems. These data were analyzed, manufacturer's equipment specifications utilized, and calculations made to provide performance curves and data for each of the above systems. A substantial amount of artwork was conceived and prepared for 35 m slides, system identification posters in the mine, and seminar handouts. This artwork included some forty 8-1/2" x 11" line sketches, graphs, block diagrams, circuit diagrams, coverage maps, and other line drawings; five 30" x 40" block diagram system identification posters suitable for in-mine use; a 20" x 30" detail perspective illustration of a representative coal mine layout; forty viewgraphs; and seventy 35 m slides of the artwork and word charts. Conferences, discussions and review sessions were held with conference participants to help coordinate the various efforts, obtain technical information, and make final plans regarding the lecture presentations, associated visual aids, and the communication system installations to be demonstrated in the Bruceton mine. These meetings included final systems checkouts and dry run presentations and reviews of the lectures and mine demonstrations. This phase of the seminar effort concluded with R. Lagace and R. Spencer of ADL participating in two days of seminar presentations in the lecture hall and in the Bruceton mine.

[Recovery of core specimens from subsurface formations and their subsequent analysis are important aids in efficient development and operation of oil and gas fields. Core specimen first were obtained mainly for the geologic information they revealed; now they are on analyzed to determine many of the physical characteristics and conditions of the subsurface formations as well. Cores recovered from the producing formations may be analyzed for porosity, permeability, oil content, "connate" water content, and other physical and chemical properties of the formation, all to the end of furnishing enough data for making reliable estimates of the quantity and availability of oil and gas within reservoir and in devising efficient means for their withdrawal.]

The scope of this paper is such that it was deemed advisable to group the contents into several main sections. They are: Section 1. Geography and Geology. Section II. Historical Review. (a) Mining and Smelting in Alabama. (b) Milling. (c) Summary of Milling Research. These two sections are primarily a bibliography and summary of the research on the Birmingham Red Mountain ores up to the middle 1040's. Section III. Status of the Birmingham Iron Industry. This sect ion points out the extent to which the findings of the iron-ore research have been applied on a commercial scale. Also, a very brief description of the dependent and allied industries is included. The value of the Birmingham iron ore is greatly enhanced by the proximity of coal and dolomite. Thus the coal and coke industry and the dolomite industry are closely allied with and to a large extent dependent upon the possibilities of economic utilization of the Red Mountain iron ores. Section IV. Beneficiation Investigations of the Red Mountain Iron Ores. This is a record of the most recent, hitherto unpublished work of the Southern Experiment Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines, Tuscaloosa, Ala., on the chemical and physical composition not only of the Big seam but of most of the iron-bearing rock strata of Red Mountain.

"INTRODUCTION Falls of ground cause the greatest number of accidents at underground metal mines. Statistics compiled by the Federal Bureau of Mines show that during a 13 - year period ended in 1943, falls of ground caused 35 percent of the fatalities and 16.8 percent of the nonfatal injuries at underground metal mines in the United States. 4/ Expressed on a basis of a million man-hours worked, the frequency rate was 0.355 for fatalities and 11.76 for nonfatal injuries. Although some progress has boon made in preventing rock-fall accidents over a 30- or 40-year period, the problem is still a major one requiring the diligent efforts of management and employees.In the Lake Superior district: where organized safety programs have been in effect for more than 30 years, the record is more favorable. Statistics compiled by the Lake Superior Mining Section of the National Safety Council reveal that over a 6-year period ended in 1945 the frequency rate of fatalities per million man-hours was 0.277, and the rate for nonfatal injuries was 2.38 from falls of ground.Although the above-given statistics do not cover equal or concurrent periods, the improvement in accident experience in the Lake Superior district over the national average, is obvious. This improvement is due to more effective methods of ground support or more rigid enforcement of the use of known methods.It is hoped that the following information about ground-support practices in the Lake Superior district will assist operators of other mines in their efforts to reduce accidents from falls of ground."

"INTRODUCTION There are presented in this report the results of limited studies by the Bureau of Mines of the firedamp safety of some powder-powered tools proposed for use underground in coal mines. This study was made to obtain general information and specific technical data for a cable splicer and some rail punches now commercially available, the aim being to keep abreast of developments and to anticipate hazards.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSAcknowledgments are made to the Mine Safety Appliances Co., Pittsburgh, Pa., for supplying equipment for these tests, and to the Pittsburgh Coal Co. for making possible observations of the use of these tools in coal mines.The assistance of other members of the Explosives Division is acknowledged: J. They are essentially small guns adapted to special work. Of the family of such tools now commercially available from one manufacturer, two have been proposed for use underground in coal mines, namely a cable splicer known as model TI and two models of rail punch known as R40 and R60. These tools employ blank-cartridge ammunition and special projectiles to accomplish the work indicated by these descriptive names."

"INTRODUCTION As a part of the investigation of domestic manganese deposits, examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected samples of ore from three from three properties in the general vicinity of Tracy, Calif.The Buckeye mine is 23 miles of Tracy, just inside the northeast boundary of Stanislaus County. The mine is owned by K.O. Winship estate of San Francisco and is leased by Verner Allen, also of San Francisco.The ore is principally manganese carbonate occurring in interbedded layers in white chert, with the original,carbonate mineral altered in place. Four samples, representing four types of ore, were submitted, as follows: A, black oxide; B, pink carbonate; C, gray carbonate.The Wilfred Murphy property (also known as the Murmac claims) is approximately 30 airline miles south of Tracy. The property can be reached by road from either Livermore or Patterson and is on the divide separating Santa Clara and Stanislaua Counties Calif. The ore occurs in lenses along a white-chert formation. A 2-ton sample of ore for testing was taken from a dump accumulated from assessment and development work. The Ladd mine, 13 miles from Tracy in San Joaquin County is owned by Pat J. Connolly of Tracy and is leased by Mack C. Lake of San Francisco. The ore is essentially a chert impregnated with manganese oxides and the association is therefore exceedingly intimate and complex. Samples from each of the three adit levels of the mine were submitted for ore-dressing study.As the samples differed widely in physical character and response to ore-dressing methods of treatment, beneficiation of ores from each property was considered as a separate problem. Hence results of the investigations will be prescribed in separate sections of this report."
