This report presents a survey of published novel coal cutting (mining) concepts and a brief discussion of each one. A preliminary evaluation follows which identifies promising concepts, emphasizing reduced dust generation and economic production potentials. The promising concepts are then studied more deeply and evaluated in more detail with recommendations given for further development action. Heat-dried municipal sludge was applied to a barren burned anthracite refuse bank in 1974. Sludge was applied at rates of 0, 40, 75, and 150 dry metric tons per hectare" Ten species of trees were planted and five species of grasses and legumes were seeded for evaluation. One plot was also irrigated with sewage effluent. The 150 t/ha sludge application rate produced the best overall herbaceous vegetation growth response. The 40 and 75 t/ha sludge application rates produced the best tree seedling growth response. Foliar analyses for trace metals indicated no phytotoxity problems. Analyses of leachate water at the three-foot soil depth indicated that the sludge applications did not impair water quality. Results of the study indicate that treated municipal sludge can be used to revegetate land disturbed by mining activities without adverse effects on the vegetation or water quality.

PRODUCTION of cesium, cesium salts, and rubidium salts in the United States declined somewhat from 1961 levels; rubidium production was virtually unchanged. Imports of pollucite declined because consumption was supplied partially out of inventory. Domestic Production.-About 50 tons of pollucite was reported mined at the Tin Mountain mine in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The Dow Chemical Co., Midland, Mich., MSA Research Corp., Callery, Pa., and Penn Rare Metals, Inc., Revere, Pa., produced a total of 159 pounds of cesium. Rubidium production remained essentially the same as in 1961. Shipments of the two metals by these companies and by American Potash & Chemical Corp., Trona, Calif., totaled 279 pounds. Production of cesium and rubidium salts by American Potash & Chemical Corp., Penn Rare Metals, Inc., and Rocky Mountain Research, Inc., Denver, Colo., declined substantially during 1962.

This is an initial progress report on a theoretical study of the iron blast furnace. The purpose is to develop a thermochemical model that will simulate mathematically a real furnace. An analysis is made of the behavior of a hypothetical furnace, operating adiabatically on pure ferric oxide, graphitic carbon, and dry air. Relationships are derived for carbon consumption, gas composition, and reaction temperature for a furnace operating at steady state, and in which the smelting rate is slow enough for the gas and solids to approach thermal and chemical equilibrium. Analyses are made for two contrasting types of gas flow: (1) Nonturbulent flow, having no vertical mixing; and (2) turbulent flow, having perfect mixing during each step of the process. It is shown that some vertical mixing is essential for complete reduction of ferrous oxide and that the extent of vertical mixing is one of the critical factors in the behavior of the furnace, This analysis indicates that the thermochemical relationships in a blast furnace can probably be best simulated by a finite series of gas-solid reactors through which gas and solids flow countercurrently and in which the temperature and composition of gases and solids are assumed to be uniform. Any degree of vertical mixing can be approximated by the proper choice of the number of reactors.

This report documents efforts to design, develop and test a training approach which would assist front-end loader operators in the acquisition of skills and awareness to reduce the probability of their involvement in accidents in the mining environment. The goal of this project was to prepare and use (on a trial basis) a training method and materials which would be generally applicable to any loader and surface mining operation while at the same time, be adjustable by mine personnel to meet the specific needs of each mining operation. This effort resulted in the Front-End Loader Training System, a structured, performance-based training approach with diverse instructional aids and classroom and on-machine training experiences. Validation of the System at a large western mine demonstrated the utility and flexibility of the training approach and materials.

ANDROS INCORPORATED has designed, manufactured and delivered four handheld C02 DETECTORS and three handheld CH4 DETECTORS. These instruments are for in-mine safety use. The DETECTORS incorporated an NDIR optical/electronic analyzer design in which exceptional zero stability is achieved by pressure modulation of the sample gas. This eliminates the need for daily calibration. This stability and the miniature design (2.5" x 4.5" x 4.5"; 4.5 lbs) of the C02/CH4 DETECTORS provide practical instruments suitable for routine safety inspections. This report includes the theory and design of the instruments as well as studies of gas-pressure modulation by a piezoceramic-driven Helmholtz resonator.

Science Applications, Inc. has developed for the U.S. Bureau of Mines a rapid response radon monitor capable of accurately responding within three minutes to changing radon levels of magnitude from 100 to 10,000 pCi/1, typical of the levels in working uranium mines. The instrument weighs 17 pounds, is sized 12" x 10" x 6", and is capable of 8 hours of continuous portable operation with a self-contained, rechargeable battery power source. Residual chamber contamination from a radon level allowed to remain in the chamber for 90 minutes is about 10 percent, decaying about a factor of two in one hour. The instrument sensitivity is a nominal 0.1 cpm/(pCi/1), with a background count rate of less than 1 cpm.

A lightweight compressed oxygen rescue breathing apparatus (RBA) for rescue and recovery missions has been developed by Mine Safety Appliances Company under contract to the Bureau of Mines. The apparatus is a positive pressure, closed circuit system of 4 hours duration. The weight of the complete apparatus, including an optional cooler, is slightly over 30 pounds. Weight reduction over currently available RBAs is achieved through the use of lithium hydroxide for scrubbing C02 in place of conventional chemicals and the use of a composite glass fiber/ aluminum shell cylinder for oxygen storage in place of steel cylinders. Positive pressure is maintained in the breathing circuit at all times by applying a constant spring force to the breathing bag. The harness has been designed to reduce the work of the wearer by redistributing the weight of the apparatus to the wearer's hips.

The Bureau of Mines sampled surface exposures of podiform chromite in the Caribou Mountain-Melozitna ultramafic belt in the Kokrines-Hodzana Highlands, central Alaska. Fieldwork began in 1979 as part of an assessment of the mineral potential of lands adjacent to the trans-Alaska pipeline corridor, for the Bureau of Land Management, and continued through 1981 as a Bureau of Mines investigation. The belt comprises six complexes of which the three closest to the pipeline corridor were investigated. Concentrations of chromite disseminated in dunite host rock make up mineralized intervals ranging in thickness from less than an inch to 5 ft and in grade from 3 to 23 pct chromium. The largest occurrence has an exposed strike length of 80 ft. Bulk surface samples were collected from 10 of these exposures, and beneficiation tests on the samples produced concentrates of metallurgical, refractory, and subindustrial grades. This survey was conducted to determine the magnitude of the methane emission and control problem in U.S. bituminous coal mines. The resultant data indicate that the emission rate for any given coalbed depends primarily on the coal production rate and on mine depth, as well as on the nature of the coalbed and the surrounding strata. An excellent correlation was found between (1) the methane emission rate and (2) the product of coal production rate and mine depth for the mines in the Pittsburgh, Pocahontas Nos. 3 and 4, and the Illinois Nos. 5 and 6 coalbeds. The highest total emission rates found in U.S. bituminous coal mines were as follows, in million cubic feet per day: Monongalia County, W. Va., 39; Marion County, W. Va., 30.4; McDowell County, W. Va., 13.1; Washington County, Pa., 11.9; Greene County, Pa., 11.4; Buchanan County, Va., 21.6; Jefferson County, Ala., 10.3; and Franklin County, Ill., 6.6.

In 1983, U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel examined mines, prospects, and mineralized areas to determine the mineral resources in the Carrizo Gorge Wilderness Study Area (WSA). The 14,571-acre WSA, located 42 miles east of El Centro, CA, is underlain primarily by Mesozoic granitic rocks and pre-Cretaceous metasedimentary rocks. Six prospects were found within the WSA and two mines are adjacent to it. Mineral deposits within the WSA have had insufficient development and rock exposures for calculating resources. The WSA contains no identified mineral resources; however, further exploration may disclose gem quality minerals. Two mines adjacent to the WSA, the Pack Rat and Beebe Hole, have produced gem quality kunzite and aquamarine from pegmatite dikes. According to the owners, a significant amount of gem minerals have been mined here in the last decade. Based on past production and the characteristic minerals indicating gem-bearing pockets, additional pockets are likely. Similar pegmatite dikes occur from Mt. Tule to Carrizo Gorge and may contain gem-bearing pockets. Pegmatite dikes also occur in the WSA near Rockhouse Canyon, but contained few of the mineral associations indicative of gem-bearing pockets. Manganese occurrences north of the Beebe Hole and Packrat Mines and within the WSA contain low concentrations of manganese. Significant sand and gravel were not identified. There is no evidence of deposits of oil and gas, or geothermal energy.

Included are discussions covering a survey of mine conditions and presently used hand scaling bar types as well as the design, fabrication and testing of the first and second prototype.

Horizontal holes are drilled underground into coalbeds to control methane flow from ribs and active face areas and to make gas pressure measurements in coalbeds. Gas pressure measurements are made by drilling the same hole incrementally. After each increment, the hole is filled with some type of packers and allowed to reach equilibrium before a gas pressure reading is taken. As the length of hole increases, more packers are required to effect a seal and obtain a reliable pressure measurement. Problems have been encountered in obtaining satisfactory packer seals due to the friable nature of the coalbed. New methods of packing the holes must be used. Therefore, this project was established to evaluate materials and develop a new technique in which a semiliquid and/ or rigid type grout could be placed in the hole to provide satisfactory sealing.

Introduction of radioactive elements into ore samples and/or pregnant liquors and radiometric tracing thereof have greatly improved control of fusion and extraction studies on beryllium ores and products. Extractive metallurgical research on beryllium, normally guided by the usual laborious analytical methods, is both costly and slow. Recognition of this problem by the Bureau of Mines led to the development and application of radioisotope tracer techniques" as a substitute for chemical analysis at the Salt Lake City Metallurgy Research Center, The result was that much faster progress at significantly lower cost was achieved. This report discusses the problems encountered and resolved in using radioactive tracers and radiometric methods, defines the conditions and techniques for their effective use, and delineates the limitations and flexibility inherent in applying such methods in laboratory-scale beryllium research.

Major air-cooling facilities have been installed and are operating underground in U.S. copper mines (at Butte, Montana and Superior, Arizona), South African gold mines, European coal mines, Zambian copper mines, Kolar gold mints in India, Coeur d'Alene mines of Idaho, plus other locations. Mining districts that utilize spot cooling and local air-cooling facilities would increase the above listing many times. The principal objectives of underground mine air cooling systems are to; 1. Extract heat and water vapor from the mine air and provide for their removal from the mine via (a) water pumped to surface or (b) discharged mine exhaust air. 2. Provide acceptable artificial ambient conditions for efficient working mine development and production areas. 3. Recondition used air, thus supplementing the limited mine ventilation balance. In deep South African gold mines, when rock temperatures exceed about 105°F, cooling of underground air becomes necessary for the poorly ventilated sections of the mine. By U.S. standards, air conditioning in poorly ventilated mines usually commences when the virgin rock temperature exceeds 100°F. On the other hand, well ventilated deep vein-type mines in the U.S. have been able to forego general cooling of mine air until the mines have been extended to such depths that the virgin wallrock temperatures have exceeded 115° - 120°F. It must be noted that spot-cooling of selected development headings may be required in many mines where rock temperatures exceed 100°F. Such local air-cooling practices permit the driving of long headings for exploration or extended development prior to holings which result in establishment of primary ventilation circuitry. The following summary reports on current practices of cooling and dehumidifying mine air. General system descriptions with important details will hopefully permit the reader to gain an understanding of the subject. A list of references is provided for this serious investigator who desires a more thorough knowledge-base and who is responsible for the design of a mine air-cooling system.

[An economic trading region made up of 22 eastern Washington, northern Idaho, and western Montana counties, with Spokane, Washington as the central place, was defined for this study. modeling system with the, 1985 county database was to create an Input/Output based model of the regional economy. The leading ice, with respect to income, employment, value of exports, and total industry output are shown for each county and the region. The value of total industry output from natural resource based industries is also shown for each county and the region. Interindustry transactions, final demand, and value added components for the region are shown in the Regional Gross Flows Table. The total gross output for the region is valued at $36.7 billion. Total industry output for the region is $18.1 billion. The region provides $5.4 billion in income to a work force of 286,000. Spokane County, Washington accounts for about 50 percent of the regional total industry output, income, and employment. Both Spokane County and then as a whole produce about 80 percent of the total industry output for final demand with remaining 20 percent going to intermediate inputs for further production. Spokane County exports about 43 percent of its total output while 35 of the regional output is exported. Exports account for more 50 percent of the total in 18 of the 22 counties within the region. A U.S. Bureau of Mines interactive FORTRAN computer program can screen explosion-proof enclosures intended for underground service. The program incorporates important information and criteria to assist enclosure manufacturers and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) personnel by providing a first-order approximation of rectangular explosion-proof enclosure characteristics prior to actual certification testing. The program uses information and data that can be retrieved automatically during program execution. The program also performs the calculations for a series solution algorithm and various equations to evaluate the enclosure for both a static internal pressure and an internal explosion. The program writes the intermediate and final calculations and information concerning the status of the screening process to a summary file on a floppy disk. One data base contains MSHA certification requirements given in the Code of Federal Regulations (30 CFR 18). A second data base contains material properties of acceptable construction materials and weld joint efficiencies. A series algorithm determines bolt and cover stresses for a simply supported rectangular cover with arbitrary bolt locations. Limit and yield line analysis is used to calculate the strength of body panels.

This report and associated deliverables is the culmination of a comprehensive literature survey, data collection and identification of over 500 metal/nonmetal active mines/mills/smelters (over 50,000 tons per year, TPY, production) in the contiguous 48 states. The main purpose was to compile an inventory of the mine/ mill/smelter waste tonnages, thus forming a data base for future research and development in improving waste management and waste disposal techniques in the metal/nonmetal mining industry. The study specifically excluded sand and gravel, sulfur, granite and any commodity that leaves basically no waste when mined and/or milled. The coal waste inventory is the subject of another report. The study provided for locating, mapping. encodating and digitizing all the mine/mill/smelter information made available throughout the nation as well as the climatological, land use, topographical, ecological and vegetative data. Mine/mill/smelter information also included (where possible) acreage and/or volume, mining methods, primary ore and gangue minerals, waste composition and haulage methods and distance hauled. Finally, a discussion is provided concerning present and potential uses of various types of tailings, as well 8S recommending possible R&D in addressing problem areas in waste disposal techniques and management.

A device was developed that measures dynamic stress (ultrasonic energy) transfer through installed rock bolts, a measure that is directly proportional to the degree of grout bonding of the bolt to the mine roof structure and thus the ability of the bolt to bear static stress. The rock bolt bond tester (RBBT) is a hand-held portable device that shows three ranges of bolt bond condition; i.e., one-third (Bad bond), two-thirds (marginal), or fully bonded. These are shown respectively by a red, yellow, or green light that displays for 4 s. RBBT performance was verified with 2 1/2-to 8-ft bolts installed in various types 0f mine roof structures (sands tone, shale, and boney coal-mud), and 15 now being tested by the Bureau of Mines in mines across the United States. The unit is about the size of a five-battery flashlight and contains the transducer electronics, and battery pack. The RBBT is designed for extreme ease of operation, requiring only manual contact with the bolt and signal read-out. The batteries are rechargeable and the package is designed for durability in a mine environment.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a field study of mines and prospects of the Black Canyon RARE II area (No. 5061), Inyo County, California, from June to October 1981. Geological) geochemical, and geophysical studies were conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey. The Black Canyon RARE II area is east of Owens Valley and 6 mi east of Bishop, California. The principal mineral commodities are gold, silver, lead, zinc, and tungsten. Properties with resources in and adjacent to the area are listed in table 1; the locations are shown on figure 1.
