"INTRODUCTION The Lookout Mountain coal deposits were examined by J.L. Stratton, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in April and May 1943. The area investigated includes that part of southern Lookout Mountain in townships 4 to 8, south, ranges-9 to 11 east, and contains approximately 140 square miles in DeKalb and Cherokee Counties in northeastern Alabama (fig. 1.)Six coal seams having a minable thickness of 18 or more inches are represented in the area. The third seam, known locally as the Hill seam, has been correlated with the Upper Cliff No.1 seam and is referred to as such throughout this report. The preliminary investigation indicated that the Upper Cliff No. 1 seam is a low-volatile, high-grade coking coal. The work done on this project was confined principally to determining the amount and grade of coal in this seam.The only existing maps of mines in the area were one of the Lookout Fuel Co. at Lahusage, Ala. (fig. 2), and one of the Lookout Mountain Iron Co. at Battelle, Ala. (fig. 3), Consequently, to gain some knowledge of the grade and tonnage mined, surveys of the other mines were necessary. Many of them were caved, and many were filled with water, necessitating considerable preliminary work."

Under Bureau of Mines Contract H0122007, Telcom, Inc., with the assistance of Fenix & Scisson, Inc., conducted a 17-month research and development project aimed at provid¬ing a field-test model of a guidance system for use with the Bureau of Mines Probe Drill. The Probe Drill is a part of the Bureau's Mine Rescue System developed under Contract H0101262. Volume I of this report is subdivided into seven sections. Volume II consists of a number of supporting appendices. In addition, there were delivered under the Contract, a number of other documents which are referenced in the text. Section 1 deals with essential contract information, Program Background, and a general system description. Section 2 covers the project chronology in brief. Section 3 is a digest of design considerations and implementation related to the requirements of the Contract. Section 4 is a description of the System, including illustrations of the hardware, and software. Section 5 is devoted to Operation and Maintenance. Para. 5.1 describes step-by-step field assembly and disassembly of the downhole unit. Para. 5.2 covers Operation. Para. 5.3 covers various aspects of maintenance from the lowest field echelon possible. Higher level maintenance must be accomplished in the laboratory, for the present field-test model. Para. 5.4 covers system calibration. Para. 5.5 covers detailed step-by-step operational sequences. Section 6 covers the results of the field testing, post-test evaluation, and recommendations. Essentially, we conclude that the present hardware (field-test model) has proven every aspect of system performance, but failed to provide reliable assurance of an operationally ready system. Telcom, therefore, recommends a three-phase continuing effort devised to provide the operationally-ready model of the system.

Various light sources were evaluated for use in a fiber optic lighting system for mining machines. It was determined that a metal halide arc lamp was best because of its resistance to damage from shock and vibration and the high luminance of the arc. Measurements were made of the percent transmission of the ½ inch thick glass window and the fiber bundles, the total lumen output of the diffuser assembly with a known input and of the average surface luminance of the diffuser assembly. These data were then used to calculate the theoretical output of the system given an estimated input from the source. A prototype 55 watt, single-ended metal halide source was then developed. In order to provide greater efficacy and higher throughput through the fiber optic cables, a variation of the lamp with thallium iodide added to the fill was developed. The lamp was modified and a ballast was developed to allow it to hot restrike.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the various techniques far mine roadway dust control. This evaluation included (a) the types of dust suppressants available, (b) the interaction of these products with the properties of the roadway surface, and (c) the costs and performance measures of the predominantly used dust suppressants. Over 30 products were identified having a wide range of effectiveness depending largely on the properties of the road base, subsurface, and wearing surface. The effectiveness of a dust suppressant was also found to depend on the application and maintenance procedures employed. As a result of this investigation five dust suppressants were identified s being predominant in the surface mining industry: Coherex, wetting agents, lignin sulfonate, water, and calcium chloride: An approximate cost-effectiveness analysis, limited by the lack of quantitative field performance data, showed that the five suppressants ranked in the order given above, with water being one of the least cost effective. This report also presents an analysis of applicable federal and state regulations.

Red mud residue from Bayer process treatment of Jamaican bauxite was dewatered in batch and in continuous centrifuges. Solids content of the residue was increased from its original value of 20 to 25 percent to about 40 percent by centrifuging. Clear effluent amounting to approximately 40 percent of the slurry liquid was recovered containing dissolved alumina and soda values for potential recycle to the alumina plant" Addition of a chemical flocculant to the centrifuge increased capacity by about 35 percent. Manufacturer's estimate of large-scale equipment requirements, based on data collected in this investigation, was that a proposed installation for dewatering 16,000 tons per day of Jamaican red mud would require twenty-two 24-by 60-inch solid-bowl-type centrifuges. Cost analysis of a proposed installation, based on a Jamaican red mud tonnage of 16,000 per day, is included also.

The purpose of these studies by the Federal Bureau of Mines was to determine the feasibility of refining low-grade hafnium by an inert-gas-shielded molten-salt electrorefining technique to produce a hafnium metal meeting reactor specifications. The techniques were adapted from those used success-fully for titanium electrorefining. Three electrolytes containing hafnium chlorides were developed from which deposits having a Brinell hardness of 170 or below were recovered. A KC1 + NaC1 + HfC14 electrolyte produced deposits in the hardness range of 140 to 165 Brinell. Deposits with a hardness range of from 132 to 152 Brinell were pro-duced from an electrolyte composed of KC1 + LiC1 + HfC14. A third electrolyte composed of NaC1 + K3HfC17 produced deposits with a hardness as low as 139 Brinell. In a fourth electrolyte, composed of NaC1 + K2HfF6, a measure of refining was accomplished, but under the test conditions no metal meeting specifications was recovered; none was softer than 174 Brinell. A number of metallic impurities were reduced in quantity by the electro-refining process, notably iron, which normally was reduced from 250 p.p.m. to less than 50 p.p.m. Magnesium generally was reduced from 680 p.p.m. to less than 80 p.p.m. Manganese content was also reduced by the electrorefining process. Sponge containing 90 p.p.m. Mn yielded deposits containing a maximum of 50 p.p.m.; some deposits contained only 10 p.p.m.

This volume is the second of three volumes comprising the final report of the research project "Biomechanics of Low Coal." It covers only the anthropometric study of low coal miners. Volume I summarizes the overall biomechanical, anthropometry, and work physiology study conducted. Development of work clothes modified to meet the needs of low coal miners is described in Volume III. The male and female anthropometry, with the exception of weight and circumferential dimensions, was quite similar to the comparison populations. The miners tended to be heavier and have greater circumferences. The measurements made in this study were used to develop 5th, 50th and 95th percentile, quarter and half scale, male and female mannequins. These twelve mannequins can be used in work place and equipment design and redesign.

As a part of its safety program the United States Bureau of Mines has fostered the development, use, and improvement of portable electric mine lamps. Although there is still need for better illumination in mines and the replacement of open lights has been slow, improvement in electric cap lamps and increase in their use indicate one phase of recent progress toward safer and more efficient mining This report is the result of a recent survey of electric-lamp installations in the Alabama mining; district; it shows the misuse, increase in use, and relation to certain classes of accidents of these installations.

On January 1, 1961 there were 311 petroleum refineries in the United States with a total crude-oil throughput capacity of slightly more than 10 million barrels per day, according to the Bureau of Mines' annual survey. Compared with a year ago, this represents net increases of one in the number of plants and 109 thousand barrels per day in total capacity. Contributing to this increase was the completion of two new plants, one in Hawaii and another in Michigan, during the year. At the beginning of 1961 the industry was building facilities which will increase this overall crude capacity by 36,500 barrels per day. As part of its building program, it was also replacing 329,000 barrels per day of its present capacity. Of the total 10 million barrel per day installed capacity, the industry reported 380,000 barrels per day as being shut-down on January 1, 1961. This included 11,500 barrels per day considered inoperable without extensive reconditioning.

Mining men and State officials in their efforts to make mining safer are confronted from time to time with various complicated questions. In recent gears these questions have tended to increase with the use of mechanical appliances. Twenty-five years ago electricity had been used but little in mires; today there is practically no other means of transmitting power employed in American mines, except that in metal mines compressed air is used, chiefly for drilling and for operating small portable hoists. In coal mines there has been a great increase in mechanization, which tends to concentrate the work of production in small areas and to increase the local difficulties of ventilation; also, it has intensified locally the hazard from coal dust as well as firedamp in bituminous and subbituminous mines. The answers to the questions that arise are not always obvious, as is shown by the fact that even able, experienced men differ in their opinions of the best, way to overcome a particular mining hazard. The difficulty of .solving the problems is also demonstrated by the varying provisions in mine-safety rules, both in official regulations and in the rules of those mining companies that are endeavoring to do more than follow the letter of the law. Such differences of opinion as to the best way of meeting a difficult situation are often found within the same mining organization, and, similarly, varying opinions are held by different members of the Bureau of Mines staff.

The Glacier Bay subarea is that part of the Juneau Mining District (JMD) within Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve (GBNP). It is the western portion of the JMD and consists of the land between the Fairweather Range crest and the Takhinsha and Chilkat Ranges crests (excluding that land east of Excursion Inlet.) Figure B-1 shows the area. It is bounded on the north by the Alaska-British Columbia International boundary, to the south by Cross Sound and Icy Strait, and contains Glacier Bay. During 1975 -1977 the Bureau conducted a detailed study of the occurrences, prospects, and deposits in GBNP (B_4).2 This work was in cooperation with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the provisions of the Wilderness Act (Public Law 88-577). As a follow up to this earlier Bureau work, limited studies were conducted, during 1985 and 1986, as part of the JMD study. This report covers the most important aspects of the earlier studies and the 1985 and 1986 studies. ACCESS The Glacier Bay area may be reached through Gustavus airport, a paved strip which is serviced by scheduled jet airliners in the summer and air taxi services year-round. The airport is connected to Bartlett Cove (GBNP headquarters) by an all-weather road. No other roads exist in the area except a skid road to the LeRoy Mine and mill in the Reid Inlet area. Much of the Glacier Bay area is accessible through the salt water inlets and fjords which are part of Glacier Bay. Cruise ships, charter boats, and fishing boats visit these inlets and fjords during the summer months. Elevations within the area range from sea level to over 15,000 feet in the rugged Fairweather Mountain Range. More remote areas are accessible by small boat, foot, or helicopter. Glacier ice is a year-round hazard to navigation in Glacier Bay, and during the winter months some of the more northerly inlets are frozen.

The property of the Park City Consolidated Mines Co. is situated in the northeast part of the Park City dining district 1 mile east of the town of Park City. The elevation at the collar of No. 1 shaft is 7,250 feet. Park City is a town of approximately 4,500 population lying about 30 miles east of Salt Lake City. The two are connected by an oiled State Highway, which is cleared of snow in winter and maintained in first-class con¬dition by the State throughout the year. The district is served by branches of the Denver & Rio Grande Western and Union Pacific Railroads, each operating on a daily' schedule, except Sunday. These two railroads have constructed 1 ½ miles of joint track from the town to the Park City Consolidated Mines Co. loading tipple, located 200 feet from the portal of the adit that leads to No. 1 shaft.

In order to provide an initial approach to the deposits of oil shale, nahcolite, and dawsonite in the central area of the Piceance Creek Basin in northwestern Colorado, the U.S.B.M. and associated contractor personnel drilled and cased a 96-inch ID shaft to a depth of 2,371 feet. The shaft was constructed using "big hole" drilling techniques and succeeded in giving access to previously inaccessible deposits of the above minerals. This report documents the construction from its beginning in January 1977 to its completion in January 1978. Procedures used and problems encountered are discussed in derail.

The Bureau of Mines developed and evaluated a detecting and sorting device to separate the copper-bearing portion from the barren portion of Michigan native copper ore in the minus 4- plus 1-inch size range. Small-scale sorting tests were also conducted on minus 1- plus 1/2-inch material from the Centennial No. 6 mine, using a previously developed system that was modified to increase sensitivity. Results showed that, with the added sensitivity, 85 to 90 pct of the copper in the minus 1- plus 1/2-inch material could be recovered in about 50 to 60 pct of the fraction. Sorting tests on minus 4- plus 2-inch and minus 2- plus 1-inch fractions from the Centennial mine were conducted with the large sorting system. Results showed that 86 to 93 pct of the copper was recovered in 43 to 64 wt-pct of the sorted fractions. Combining of concentrates from the two fractions resulted in a recovery of 90 pct of the Popper in 55 pct of the weight. The composite concentrate contained 2.40 pct copper, and the tailing analyzed 0.33 pct Cu; the head sample assayed 1.46 pct Cu.

This Final Report describes the major technical activities that were accomplished to produce a comprehensive continuous miner training system (CMTS) for coal industry utilization. The primary product of this program was a continuous miner part-task trainer. It is composed of an interactive computer graphics system combined with the operating controls of a continuous mining machine mounted in a simulated cab. The cab contains an audio system for reproducing continuous miner operational sounds. The trainer is supplemented with a complete set of cognitive materials that provide instruction in the operation, safety and health of continuous miner operations. A complete summary of the field test and evaluation of the CMTS is provided along with a set of recommendations for further training program refinements, expansions, and utilization.

In 1984 and 1985 the U.S. Bureau of Mines performed a mineral survey of the South Jackson Mountains Wilderness Study Area covering 60,211 acres of mountainous terrain of Humboldt County in northwestern Nevada. Approximately 550 lode claims have been located within or adjacent to the study area from 1900 to the present. Total recorded production for the area is 28.19 ounces gold, 1,105 ounces silver, 959 pounds copper, 6,016 pounds lead, and 12,446 pounds zinc; an additional two carloads from one mine contained an unknown amount of metal. In early 1986, there were eight active properties with a total of 126 claims. Wescord Resources and Long Lac Exploration (Texas) Inc. are involved in a joint exploration of the Jackson Mountains for volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits. Development at the Claudia mine continues in 1986. Results of the survey indicate that there are no identified mineral resources or reserves within or adjacent to the study area. Twenty-two properties have mineral occurrences containing gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, iron, antimony, vanadium, and cobalt, with silver, copper, and iron being the most abundant.

This report presents the data of one of a series of investigations of the washability of Alabama coals as indicated by float-and-sink tests made by the Bureau of Mines at the Southern Experiment Station in cooperation with the University of Alabama and Alabama coal producers The Klondyke mine, operated by the Blocton Mining Co., is about 1 mile east of West Blocton, Bibb County, Ala., near the southwestern extremity of the Cahaba coal field. The Bureau of Mines already has published three reports that deal with the washability of Cahaba coals - one a washability study of the Clark bed at Marvel4/, one on the tabling of fine coal from the Thompson and Woodstock bed , and the third a washablility study of the Henry Ellen bed at Acmar6/.

This bulletin is a revision of Bulletin 63 and is published by the Bureau of Mines in order that purchasers of coal for Government, State, municipal, or private use may be informed regarding advances or refinements in sampling coal deliveries and preparing specifications for the purchase of coal. The purchase of coal by the Government under specifications depending on the heating value of the coal, its content of ash and of moisture, and other considerations, rather than upon the reputation or trade name of the coal, was based on the fuel investigations begun by the Technologic Branch of the United States Geological Survey in 1904. The plan was first adopted by the Treasury Department in 1906. Since then the plan, variously modified in form, but the same in principle, has been gradually adopted by other departments until, at present, of the coal used by the Government, the total value of which approximates $8,000,000 annually, more than half is purchased under specifications. The Government publications dealing with the adoption by the Government of the specification plan, the number of contracts awarded on that basis, and the quality of the coal delivered under such contracts in the several fiscal years covered by the reports are given in publioations a listed at the end of this bulletin. Under the authority of acts of Congress making appropriations for analyzing and testing fuels belonging to or for the use of the United States Government, a laboratory is maintained at the headquarters of the Bureau of Mines, Washington, D. C., where samples representing deliveries of coal purchased under specifications for Government use are analyzed and tested. At this laboratory more than 1,200 samples have been analyzed and tested in one month. With the complete equipment and the efficient force employed, the analytical work has been so perfected that the analyses and heating-value tests of the samples received are as accurate as may be reasonably expected in laboratory work of this nature. One of the serious drawbacks to the general adoption of the specification method for the purchase of coal is the difficulty of obtaining at reasonable cost samples of coal that can be considered fairly representative of the commercial product delivered in wagons, railroad cars, or ships. Therefore the method of taking and preparing samples for shipment to the laboratory has been given fully as much care as the making of the analyses and tests, and a general plan of collecting samples fairly representative of the delivered coal has been evolved through various modifications and improvements based on experience and increased knowledge of the physical and chemical characteristics of the various coals that are purchased by the Government. The method that is in general use by the Government is described in the following pages. In connection with studies of the coal deposits of the country, of the best methods of preventing waste in mining, and of increasing efficiency in the utilization of coal belonging to or for the use of the Government, geologists and engineers of the United States Geological Survey and of the Bureau of Mines have visited more than 2,500 coal mines scattered through all of the coal-producing States and Territories. From each mine 2 to 8 or more samples were taken, the number depending upon the size of the mine and its output. The analyses and descriptions of the samples collected up to the end of the fiscal year 1913 are published in Bureau of Mines bulletins 22 a and 85,b and those of samples collected in the fiscal years 1914 and 1915 are presented in a bulletin that will soon be published by the bureau. A study of the analyses of these samples and of the samples taken from cars shipped from a number of the same mines shows that the mine samples are as a rule of higher grade than the average commercial shipments, particularly with respect to containing a lower percentage of ash and having a correspondingly higher heating value. This difference is due to the fact that the Government inspector, proceeding on the basis of what can be done by a good miner, usually removes more of the partings of bone, slate, and other extraneous matter from his mine samples than the average miner does in ordinary practice, the aim of the miner being to get the maximum number of tons past the tipple inspection, as his earnings are based on his output. The average miner, therefore, does not always take as much care as he might in rejecting the impurities. As part of the Bureau of Mines effort to establish a comprehensive subsidence data base for subsidence technology development, subsidence and related data are being compiled for various mining, geological, and environmental situations. This publication presents data for two longwall mining operations in the Northern Appalachian Coal Region. Vertical displacements and relative face positions are tabulated for 104 subsidence monuments. Brief physiographic and geological descriptions of the mining sites are presented along with a general account of the mining and subsidence monitoring methods.
