"Current empirical Semi Autogneous Grinding (SAG) mill models contain assumptions concerning the amount of energy available for particle breakage, how this energy is distributed in the mill media and the rate at which the energy is transferred. Despite these assumptions the JK SAG model is highly functional with a proven track record. DEM provides a numerical framework to greatly improve on these assumptions that were necessary due to a lack of available input data.This paper identifies key outputs of the Discrete Element Method (DEM), such as energy spectra and impact probability distribution. It describes how they can be incorporated into current mill models utilising practical rock breakage data. The rate at which energy is transferred is shown to be dependent on particle position and mill rotational speed and not once per cycle as previously assumed. Based upon this an improved energy transfer methodology is presented. The fundamental outputs of the DEM are validated against experimental three-dimensional particle tracking data, so as to establish whether the DEM produces correct energy transfer predictions on the inter-particle level, which is crucial to this work. • Effective Experimental ValidationAn automated 3D tracking technique is employed to study the motion of plastic particles deep within the charge of a 142mm diameter experimental mill. A Biplanar Angioscope is used to film the mill with X-rays in two planes simultaneously at 50 frames/s, with a shutter speed of 1/3000s. A marked ball within the charge is tracked for over 2 minutes and the resulting digital images processed by a fully automated imaging technique, which locates the 3D coordinates of the particles to within 0.2mm. With over 250 circulations, this provides statistically rigorous and accurate data for verification in the numerical modelling of mills.A series of validation techniques have been developed to compare the experimental trajectory data with the outputs of both 2D and 3D DEM simulations. The techniques describe the shape of the charge and the particle motion within mill, allowing objective comparisons to be made of key features of the charge, such as the equilibrium surface and the centre-of-circulation."

"Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are an important constituent of waste electric and electronic equipment (WEEE), and contain many electronic components with valuable, hazardous or both materials. Recycling of PCBs is an important subject not only from the treatment of waste but also from the recovery of valuable materials. Demand for rare earth metals is expected to accelerate because of their growing use in next generation high technologies. Since some of these metals are concentrated in a specific electronic component, for example, Ta in capacitors, a special and selective grinding such as parts detachment from the board is effective for the recycling of a part of rare metals. However, direct computer simulation method to investigate a comminution/detachment process of PCBs has not yet been established. In this study, our objective was revealing the mechanism of breakage phenomena in comminution / detachment process of PCBs using computer simulation. A special and selective grinding using an agitation mill promoted the removal of components from a PCB by detachment and was an effective method for the recovery of rare metals. Simulant PCBs on which some capacitors were solder-mounted were used for the comminution test using drum type mill with agitator. To describe this mechanism of the parts detachment process, a computer simulation using discrete element method (DEM) was conducted. Although only an indirect simulation using the spherical particle model was possible for part detachment and board breakage, the particle-based rigid body model could directly represent the behaviour of PCBs. Simulation results successfully corresponded to comminution experimental results."

In India around 15-20% of Run of Mine (ROM) from any iron ore deposit reports to slime dams as byproduct of iron ore beneficiation process. The proportion of iron ore slime to ROM will increase in future with higher proportion of lean grade ores in ROM. Furthermore, tonnages of iron ore slime will also increase with increasing demand of iron concentrate. Presently, this slime is stored in the dam in the absence of beneficiation technology. A beneficiation flowsheet has been developed at Tata Steel. This process produced concentrate of 2.2% alumina with 40 % yield from slime of 7-9% alumina. The iron content in the reject will be less than 40% thus adhering to the regulatory norm. Pilot scale study show waste from slime beneficiation is a good raw material for making a variety of building materials. Waste from slime beneficiation also has soil amendment properties. Pilot scale studies show productivity of rice increased when the waste of slime beneficiation process is mixed with soil. On commercialization of this zero waste technology slime generated from the iron ore washing plant will be completely used. In this paper the result of the pilot scale studies on slime beneficiation and utilization processes towards soil making and making of building materials are discussed in detail.

Carbonates have gained significant economic importance for the human kind. On one hand over a hundred uses are listed for carbonates. On the other hand, carbonates host base metal deposits. Although the carbonates play a significant part in the development of those deposits, in the mineral processing they consume acid and cause selectivity problems during flotation and leaching. Carbonates also accompany other industrial minerals as waste rock. For all those cases it necessary to find a technique to separate carbonate as early as possible in the processing chain. In this paper, the applicability of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) sorting for the separation of carbonates is discussed. NIRS sorting is a sensor-based sorting technique, in which particles are singularly detected by a sensor and then rejected by an amplified mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic process. This technique can for example be implemented in the process as a pre-concentration step for coarse particle sizes up to 300 mm. NIRS sorting discriminates among materials based on the difference that exist between their spectral properties in the near-infrared (NIR). Vibrations of molecular bonds in carbonates cause characteristic spectral properties in the NIR, which makes carbonates detectable, possible to identify, distinguish and separate from other rock materials. The spectral properties can also be used to distinguish between different carbonate minerals and mixtures. If the spectral variations are large enough for detection, sorting based on NIRS is possible. Feasibility studies on sensor-based separation of carbonates in the processing of talc, borate, fluorite, marble, zinc-oxides, copper sulphide and iron ore as well as the discrimination of calcite and dolomite mixtures are conducted and indicate the high potential of NIRS sorting in the minerals industry. "Under the auspices of World Federation of Engineering Organizations’ Committee on Engineering and the Environment (WFEO-CEE) and Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) Task Force on Sustainability and Mining (TFSM), and aimed at helping raise global understanding on and promote capacity building of risk management, this paper presents a framework and prototype of toolbox or knowledge warehouse for facilitating the application of risk analysis, mitigation and management techniques (RAMT) in the mining and minerals sector. The conception, design and implementation of the intended system of knowledge warehouse of risk analysis, mitigation and management techniques (KWoRAMT) are outlined. The system architecture of KWoRAMT is based on a browser/server (B/S) structured platform with web oriented interfaces and composed of data base, knowledge warehouse, searching mechanisms, and risk assessment methodologies. The knowledge sources for KWoRAMT will come from the TFSM expertise and Internet, including laws and regulations, codes of practice, standards, guidelines and best practices. The functions and outcomes of KWoRAMT consist of guided navigations with web links, categorized risk tools, annotated best practices with cases, and integrated risk approaches and solutions based on typical risk methods. Risk categories include those impacting on mine safety, mine occupational health, and mine community environment throughout the whole of mine life cycle from exploration, construction, and exploitation and processing to post-mining closure. Mining associated hazards will be identified and linked by vulnerability onto risk receptors through pathways. Risk management techniques for assessing impacts and consequences of mining induced hazards will be categorized with their pros and cons or strengths and weaknesses. Best practices and significant cases including experiences and lessons with problems, solutions, and recommendations on how solutions would be derived will be illustrated. Integrated risk approaches based upon typical methods will be developed for alternatives and actions."

In global mining sector, when people mention "China Factor", usually they refer to China’s huge demands for mineral commodities, which had been driving the world mining industry into late "Super Circle". Few people pay attention to Chinese research capabilities and resources, which actually grows with Chinese economics in last three decades in such a soaring speed that you can simply feel it by the number of papers and attendees in recent IMPCs. In China, currently there are 33 universities and colleges where mineral processing discipline is established, and more than 20 research institutes dedicated in mineral processing area, with the largest number of students, teachers and researchers in the world. Due to the characteristics of Chinese mineral resources, Chinese researchers have made tremendous efforts on R&D of the process and reagents for those low grade, fine dissemination, and complex minerals resources, such as low grade hematite, diaspore, complex poly-metallic sulphides, as well as those minerals rich in China, including scheelite, cassiterite, and rare earth etc. with a special emphasis on the comprehensive utilization. Those research achievements not only successfully commercialized in China, but also have great potential for international cooperation. With continuation of globalization , Chinese government has been encouraging the international R&D cooperation in various areas at all levels, and the funding mechanism is well established with more 400 projects were sponsored in last year,in which,however, the mineral processing related projects are very few. Considering the fact that a large number of Chinese companies or Chinese capitals investing in the mining sector worldwide, more opportunities for international cooperation in this filed wouldbe emerging and increasing, while the factors like complementary, IP, government policy, system and culture difference still need to be addressed properly.

The complex nature of multi-phase flow in dense medium cyclones has restricted plant operators and designers to rely on empirical equations for predicting the performance. A number of empirical cyclone models have been developed in the past (Wood, 1990; Dunglison, 2002). In recent years, this subject has been broached with computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Most of the CFD models have not considered the correct rheological behavior of magnetite medium while simulating the medium segregation inside the cyclone. These models mostly predict excessive underflow volumetric flow rates. In this paper simulations of magnetite medium in a dense medium cyclone, were conducted in FLUENT where the particle phases were simulated using the modified Mixture model. The turbulence was resolved using Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model. The rheological behavior of medium was considered in the form of Granular viscosity, Newtonian and Non-Newtonian models corrected with particle loadings and fraction of ultrafines. Multi-phase simulations using granular viscosity option although predict the overall split product medium densities reasonably close to experiments, the mixture viscosity values are restricted to substantially lower values, similar to water viscosity. Simulations using Newtonian viscosity model corrected with particle loading, and fine fraction below 53µm size is predicting overall mixture viscosity levels well over water viscosity levels, but under predicting the under flow the underflow medium density. Multi-phase simulations using Non-Newtonian Herschel-Buckley model, calibrated for superfine magnetite medium measured viscosities, is closely predicting the medium segregation with gamma ray tomography data. Overall predicted product medium densities, underflow volume split are close to the experimental data. This model is can be further used to simulate coal portioning and hence in developing new designs.

"The surface-chemical property of nickel slag fiber was modified in aqueous media in order to act as an active and efficient collector of colloidal amorphous silica from geothermal effluent. Colloidal amorphous silica (0.05 µm) from geothermal wastewater causes operational and ecological problems. It clogs geothermal pipes and waterways, and when disposed to the environment poses hazardous effects on both the flora and fauna ecology. Because colloidal amorphous silica is extremely fine and remains in suspension in aqueous media, conventional solid/liquid processes to remove colloidal silica from its bulk liquid are rendered ineffective.A rapid separation technique is then developed to remove effectively amorphous colloidal silica from its bulk liquid by attaching the extremely fine particles of silica onto a nickel slag fiber coated with magnesium hydroxide, Mg(OH)2. The nickel slag fiber has the following characteristics: a high surface area and predominantly possesses negative charge in aqueous media with an iso-electric point at pH ~2.5. When soaked and saturated with Mg(OH)2 solution, the surface of the nickel slag fiber becomes coated with fine and compacted Mg(OH)2 precipitates. This modifies the surface- chemical property of nickel slag fiber transforming the negatively charged surface into a positively charged surface in aqueous media with an iso-electric point of around pH 11.8, which corresponds to the iso-electric point of Mg(OH)2. When geothermal effluent containing negatively charged colloidal amorphous silica particles (i.e.p. of silica is pH 2) is passed through a column-bed packed with surface-chemically modified nickel slag fibers under natural pH conditions, the colloidal amorphous silica particles are recovered by attachment onto the surface of the surface- modified nickel slag fiber. The recovery of colloidal amorphous silica by attachment is 97-99%, resulting in the production of a relatively clean and silica free output. Aluminum hydroxide, Al(OH)3, was also used to modify the surface –chemical property of the nickel slag fiber. In the same way, it also exhibited a positive response with the collection of colloidal amorphous silica from its bulk liquid, but yielding a lower recovery of 90%. This may be attributed to the lower surface potential and iso-electric point of pH 9.3 for Al(OH)3. The separation process was evaluated and analysed using existing potential energy theories. Figure 1 shows a micrograph of the surface of an unmodified and the Al(OH)3 –modified surface of nickel slag fiber."

Many technical processes also yield dusty residues which usually contain appreciable amounts of valuable matter. Often they also accumulate substances detrimental to the process. Dumping them entirely in landfills wastes raw material and causes high disposal costs, but recycling them without prior treatment is often not feasible. Physical separation processes are preferable because of their rather low energy demand. In order to develop such treatment systematically, the residues must be characterized properly. The technique for such a characterization is taken from mineral processing: perfect fractionation according to continuous properties of the particles supplemented with chemical analysis are used for plotting the Henry-Reinhardt chart. This represents the benchmark for assessing actual separation processes and tests. Their results are compared in terms of ?selectivity? and plotted in the kappa chart. In this paper, Henry-Reinhardt chart and kappa chart are applied to several different types of residues from iron and steel production and show their potential for being upgraded before reutilization in the production process. "The quality of the higher education in Indonesia is being improved by implementing a program financed by the World Bank under a project named QUE (Quality for Undergraduate Education). The investments are provided to selected study programs through a competitive selection process. The grant finances staff development, the purchase of equipments, textbooks, consumables, technical assistance, and incentives for outstanding faculties such as teaching grants, project grants, lecture note awards, and educational policy studies. These additional investments are provided to produce chemical engineering graduates that will compete beyond the national market.Chemical Engineering Department of Institut Teknologi Bandung in Indonesia has been selected to receive the QUE grant beginning the year 2000 and ending the year 2004. The department is actively involved in the mineral processing issues, particularly in the aspects of energy supply and the environmental protection. The activities are distributed in different laboratories and areas of expertise, such as: thermodynamics and utility systems, process equipment, chemical reaction and catalysis, microbiology and bioprocess engineering, process control, ceramics, as well as polymer and membrane technology. The main objectives of the QUE project are to improve the undergraduate program in the following aspects: Relevance, Academic atmosphere, Institutional management and commitment, Sustainability, as well as Efficiency and productivity, or abbreviated as RAISE. At the end of every fiscal year, the progress of the program is evaluated to measure the effectiveness of the project.The achievement of the QUE project objectives were assessed using performance indicators developed during the program design. There are six indicators to measure the performance of the individual program of study, such as: (1) Admission Test score, (2) average students' Grade Point Average (GPA), (3) average graduates' length of study, (4) graduates' waiting time before getting first job, (5) Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) score, (6) Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score. Essentially, the RAISE evaluation criteria will be used to perform three main functions, such as (1) to measure the achievement through the six quantitative performance indicators, (2) to support the progress of evaluation and reporting throughout the implementation of the program, (3) to provide a universal framework for qualitative evaluation."

"The modelling of bath type furnaces tends to be either fundamental in nature or total empirical ""black box models"". While models of the first kind are robust, they tend to lack accuracy, in cases where they are to be used for process control, and may take an overly long in development time. On the other hand, black box models tend to lack robustness of prediction for all circumstances and tend to be limited to interpolate based on historical data. While this may very often provide short-term accuracy, the models may have problems with stability in the long term. Moreover, the model structure may not reflect any of the fundamental properties of the system and remains opaque to fundamental analysis. The aim of the model development is in obtaining a model that have robustness, high accuracy, a short development time and which is adaptive to a changing environment. The models are specifically developed for on-line decision support or control of furnaces. The modelling approach is evaluated for a chromite bath smelting furnace. The role of systems analysis, mass balance smoothing, thermodynamic analysis are integrated into one generic algorithm for bath type furnaces. Not only are fundamental process relationships such the mass and energy balances satisfied through a scientific method of data reconciliation; the proposed modelling approach allows adaptive prediction, the first step towards predictive control or metallurgical decision support.It is shown that neither an ARMAX model only, nor a purely equilibrium model only, could predict the dynamics of the process very well. However, a combination of the two approaches more than doubled the accuracy as measured by the R2. It was noted for carbon dissolved in the alloy, that the improvement in R2 in using a hybrid modelling approach was more than the sum of the R2 of the individual traditional approaches. Similar improvements in modelling performance were noted for all other species.It shows further that process dynamics may totally overshadow the effect of thermochemical equilibrium (even when the thermochemical equilibrium prediction includes the recycled alloy and slag heels as additional feeds). The exclusion of process dynamics therefore leads to erroneous results."

Activated carbon is widely used in the removal of organic and/or inorganic contaminants from waste water due to its high surface area, porous structure, and specific surface reactivity. However, in practical applications, it is difficult to recover the activated carbon completely by screening or classification. In this project,we prepared a magnetic form of activated carbon (magnetic activated carbon or M-AC) by precipitation of iron oxides on the surface of activated carbon. The M-AC can be easily separated from effluents by applying an external magnetic field, thus it can be recycled and regenerated for reuse. M-AC was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), specific surface area measurement, and scanning electron microscope (SEM).XRD results show that the major phase of coated iron oxides on activated carbon is magnetite (Fe3O4). The specific surface area of activated carbon was found to be reduced after the impregnation of magnetite particles on the surface. The SEM micrograph shows the aggregation of the iron oxides on the surface of activated carbon. M-ACwas found effective in removing DETA (diethylenetriamine) species and metal ions from solutions. Cu (II) with initial concentrations from 5 ppm to25 ppm in solution is removed by more than 99% with the addition of 0.1 wt.%ofM-AC. For the removal of 25 ppm DETA species from solution, an addition of 0.5 wt.% of M-AC is required due to the larger size of the DETA molecule. Moreover, M-AC showed a good loadingproperty for nickel and gold ions from solutions. M-ACshows a better adsorption capacityover activated carbon and its potential applications in carbon-in-pulp for gold leaching and waste water treatment. "Particle scale simulation of industrial particle flows using DEM (Discrete Element Method) offers the opportunity for better understanding the flow dynamics leading to improvements in equipment design and operation that can potentially lead to large increases in efficiency, throughput or product quality. DEM has been used for modelling many industrial applications, particularly milling. This includes ball and rock motions and power consumption in ball mills, AG and SAG mills, vibrational segregation, flows in rotating drums, operation of dragline excavators and hopper flows. In mineral processing, DEM has been concentrated on mills because of their critical importance. However DEM also offers the opportunity to improve many other parts of mineral processing operations. These areas often do not receive the attention that the key comminution equipment commands, but can become critical when they fail or under-perform. Importantly their assessment/improvement using DEM is often much more feasible because of smaller problem sizes and the absence of poorly understood physics such as breakage. In this paper we describe DEM simulations of four important pieces of non-comminution equipment that are commonly found in or near mineral processing plants (these are shown in Figure 1):"

"In this study, the flotation characteristics of a cassiterite-bearing fine-grained and complex skarn ore from a deposit in the Ore Mountains is investigated. The tests are performed using an oil-assisted column flotation approach to process very fine ore fractions and avoid losses of cassiterite into the tailings. First, process parameters are obtained for a finely ground artificial mixture of quartz, magnetite and cassiterite, simulating the real ore. Thereby, magnetite is used, as iron oxides can have a detrimental effect on the flotation due to a similar flotation behavior. In addition, they can act as a source of multivalent ions, which are known to reduce the concentration of collector molecules, active for flotation. Based on the results, selected parameters are further tested for cassiterite skarn ore from the Hämmerlein deposit including a pre-conditioning and a water exchange step to remove ionic contaminants. The process response is analyzed in detail by XRF (X-ray fluorescence) and MLA (mineral liberation analysis) to get a better understanding of the behavior of the single ore components. Sulfosuccinamate type surfactant is utilized as the collector, emulsifier and to reduce the froth destabilization through nonpolar oil. Sodium hexafluorosilicate is added as the depressant.INTRODUCTION Complex skarn ore deposits containing considerable amounts of tin, indium and other metals are located in the Ore Mountains region (Germany). In this study, a skarn ore from the Hämmerlein deposit was investigated. Due to the finely disseminated nature of this ore, past beneficiation attempts failed, and the ore was considered economically unprocessable. However, increasing resource demands brings it back into focus (Schuppan and Hiller, 2012). Cassiterite is the main tin bearing mineral in this ore. Due to its high density (~7 g/cm³), the predominant beneficiation technique is gravity separation (Angadi et al., 2015). Tin ores from disseminated deposits have to be extensively comminuted to reach a sufficient degree of liberation of the cassiterite grains. As cassiterite has a brittle nature, it is preferable enriched in small size fractions, during comminution (Angadi et al., 2015). Gravity separation methods become more and more inefficient for particles smaller 40 µm (Falcon, 1982), causing tin losses of up to 30 to 40wt.-% (Angadi et al., 2015). Thus, froth flotation of cassiterite was first utilized in Altenberg in the Ore Mountains as an additional processing step to reduce the cassiterite losses into gravity separation tailings (Bulatovic, 2010; Gruner and Bilsing, 1992). Although the reported lower size limits for an effective cassiterite floatability are often smaller compared to other minerals, the flotation performance is in general decreasing for small particle sizes < 10 µm (Trahar and Warren, 1976). Therefore, different approaches have been already investigated for the flotation of such fine cassiterite fractions to overcome the limits in particle size. Bilgen et al. investigated the shear flocculation of cassiterite with a sulfosuccinamate collector (Bilgen et al., 1994). The agglomeration flotation of cassiterite has been tested by Schubert et al. (Schubert et al., 1966), in which the selective coagulation of fine hydrophobic particles and oil droplets leads to an increase of the effective particle size. Recently, Leistner at al. investigated an oil-assisted agglomeration flotation for ultra-fine cassiterite ore fractions (Leistner et al., 2016). However, a poor response due to an increased concentration of Fe and Ca ions, unselective oil/gangue coagulation and froth instability, that is caused by oil/frother interactions, has been observed."

Copper concentration is becoming more difficult because remaining copper ores are more complex and of finer copper mineral grain size, making copper minerals harder to float because of the fine particle size required to liberate the valuable species. The purpose of this work was to study the flotation behavior of fine copper sulfide ores at different conditions of agitation and aeration. The experimental campaign was carried out in a laboratory Denvertype flotation cell of 1 L volume modified to be operated with forced air that allows decoupling air flow rate and agitation speed. Four ore samples from Chile were used, all of them containing copper sulfides such as chalcopyrite, bornite, chalcocite, and tennantite, but with varying grain sizes and compositions. Preliminary flotation tests for establishing the flotation conditions of grinding size and collector dosage were conducted before the kinetic flotation tests that were carried out at different agitation speeds varying from 900 to 1300 rpm for gas flow rate ranging from 1.6 to 7.2 L/min. The flotation products were analyzed by ICP-MS and MLA (Mineral Liberation Analyzer). The results showed that high agitation speeds with corresponding air flow rates resulted in better recovery than moderate agitation speed and air flow rate, and an excess in gas flow rate resulted in bad performances. The flotation rates of the fine copper minerals were improved despite the different improvement rates among the fine size fractions. The impact of these operational variables, however, was different when comparing the results for the four ore samples. While it was found that the order of floatability in the four samples was the same, that is, chalcocite > tennantite > bornite > chalcopyrite, the kinetic constants of the copper minerals in the samples were different, indicating that mineral composition in the sample affects the flotation kinetics.

"In order to meet the growing demand for non-Chinese rare earth suppliers many new rare earth (RE) mineral deposits are currently under development, however these deposits typically include many minerals for which there is little processing information available. One of these deposits is the Nechalacho deposit located in the North West Territories of Canada. This deposit contains multiple RE minerals including bastnäsite, zircon, fergusonite, allanite and monazite. The work presented here investigates the use of different classes of flotation collectors (carboxylic acids, hydroxamic acids, phosphoric acids) typically used in RE mineral flotation to float the Nechalacho ore directly. Flotation tests are also conducted as the final step in a beneficiation process incorporating centrifugal gravity concentration and magnetic separation. This combination of centrifugal gravity concentration and magnetic separation rejects low specific gravity gangue minerals such as K-feldspar and plagioclase and concentrates high specific gravity minerals such as magnetite and hematite. The removal of low specific gravity gangue helps to improve flotation and the removal of ferromagnetic iron oxides is important prior to flotation using certain chelating collectors."

"Gold has been a material in high demand since the dawn of humanity. After hundreds of years of exploitation, the increasingly search for gold occurs in lower grade deposits with greater extraction difficulty. Therefore, for maximum efficiency, deep knowledge of the characteristics of these minerals and their associations is crucial, which is acquired through an accurate and rigorous routine of process mineralogy and batch extraction tests. The industrial gold process extraction occurs by gravity concentration, sulphides flotation and cyanidation. For gravity concentration, it is fundamental to establish the proportion of free or coarse gold grains and its association to heavy minerals; regarding flotation, the most relevant data are the proportion of gold associated to sulphides and their liberation by the surface area; for cyanidation, it is crucial to evaluate gold accessibility and the kinetics of leaching. Thus, the characterization of gold associations and liberation is vital to establish the plant design, to optimize operating plants and to reduce gold losses. Our aim is the characterization of gold occurrence in low-grade Brazilian deposits with complex mineralogical assemblages to support processing flowchart definition and to predict metallurgical recoveries. Gold distribution in light and heavy minerals was evaluated by heavy liquid separation and the occurrence of gold in free or locked particles was carried out on heavy products by SEM-based automated image analysis using the MLA system. All the products of heavy liquid separation were cyanidated in head samples with different milling conditions to evaluate the reaction kinetics and maximum recovery."

"Drilling solid waste is a typical industrial solid waste, and it is a major pollutant source to ecological environment. Generally, waste management dewatering systems separate solids and fine particles from the liquid phase of drilling fluid, thereby leaving a clarified aqueous solution and allow the cleaning of waste fluids. Typically, dewatering waste management systems clean drilling fluid through coagulation, flocculation and/or mechanical separation. Chemicals used in dewatering are based on the coagulation-flocculation process, which it facilitate the removal of suspended solids and colloidal particles. The factors which can promote the coagulation-flocculation are velocity gradient, contact time, and PH. The objective of this work is to optimize a formulation adequate for dewatering based on the coagulation-flocculation process used coagulant (Aluminum sulphate), anionic flocculants (Partially Hydrolyzed Polyacrylamide) and anionic polyelectrolytes (in solid form with linear chain with very high molecular weight). The results obtained show the good efficiency of the coagulant and flocculants. INTRODUCTION Rig site dewatering of drilling fluids with recycling of processed water can help an operator to comply with environmental rules by reducing volumes of waste and reducing long term liabilities. It can also reduce disposal costs and provide a cleaner drill site overall. Most of the environmental concerns during the 1980s involved hazardous materials and toxic wastes. Drilling fluids, many of which are chemically benign, have escaped many of the difficult-to-comply-with rules and regulations. During the 1990s, however, operators may be required to submit a written plan for liquid waste reduction for even nonhazardous materials. Many states and local agencies may institute total bans on oil field wastes. Drilling rigs typically produce about 1 bbl of liquid waste for every 1 ft of hole drilled. Thus, a typical drilling operation can produce a large quantity of waste [1]. To improve the dewaterability of sludge, different pretreatment processes have been widely studied and developed including thermal, chemical, magnetic, mechanical, acoustic, electric, electro-acoustic and their hybrid treatment processes [2]. Rig site dewatering (figure 1) is the process of injecting coagulants or flocculating chemicals into the mud entering a large clarifying centrifuge. Coagulation occurs when the solid and allowing it to be attracted to other solids by van der waals forces. Flocculation is the binding of individual solid particles into aggregates of multiple particles. It is physical, rather than electrical, and occurs when one segment of a flocculating polymer chain absorbs simultaneously onto more than one particle [3]."

In conventional mechanical flotation cells, when the size of particles exceed a particular value, that is of the order of 100 µm for metal sulphides, the recovery of particles decline rapidly. It appears that the turbulence in the agitated vessel is sufficiently intense to rupture the forces of attraction between the particles and the bubbles, so the large particles are flung off the bubbles in the turbulent field. It has recently been suggested, that a fluidized bed would be a very favorable environment in which to contact bubbles and the particles. In a fluidized bed, particles are supported by rising flow of fluid, which separates them from each other and allows them to move freely while remaining close together. In this novel method, bubbles injected into the fluidized bed are able to rise through it, colliding with hydrophobic particles, transporting them to the top of the column where they can form a froth layer that overflows into a launder. The flow in a fluidized bed is generally slow and nonturbulent, and preliminary experiments have shown, that it is possible to collect mineral particles as large as 1 mm and coal particles as large as 5.5 mm. If the upper particle size limit can be extended, there could be significant reductions in the overall energy consumption in concentrators. Calculations show for example that if the top size for flotation could be increased from 100 µm to 400 µm, there would be a reduction in grinding energy of the order of 40%. It is therefore, important to study the mechanism of coarse particle capture in fluidized beds. In this work, the factors governing the capture rate of particles, particularly the particle and bubble size, the fluidization velocity and the superficial gas velocity have been investigated, and the results will be presented.

"The use of vertical stirred mills in the mining industry has increased remarkably over the past few decades, as a result of growing requirement for finer ore grinding. This equipment delivers higher energy efficiency in fine grinding operations when compared to conventional tubular mills. Methods for designing vertical stirred mills involve operational experience, pilot plants and bench tests. An important issue is that these tests require, at a laboratory scale, at least 10–20 kg of material, depending on its density, which is not available in many cases, particularly in the early stages of greenfield projects. For the regrind of flotation concentrates, several bench scale flotation cycles are required to generate such a sample. This paper describes the development of a laboratory jar mill test using a 6”x8” jar – smaller than that commonly used – based on the overall specific energy method, which requires significantly less mass compared with existing tests. The proposed test has proven to be more practical than tests normally used, requiring about a quarter of the mass, and also shows good adherence to industrial results for the studied iron ore processing plant. INTRODUCTION A significant demand for finer grinding has been noticed over the past few decades in several mining projects to achieve the mineral liberation required for the concentration of valuable minerals. However, the finer the product size, the greater the grinding energy consumption, resulting in an overall increase in operating costs, which may reach or even exceed 50% of the mineral processing cost (VIEIRA, PERES, 2013; DANIEL, LEWIS-GREY, 2011). Comminution technology can have a major impact on subsequent ore concentration stages (DANIEL, LEWIS-GREY, 2011; MARSDEN, 2009; NAPIER-MUNN, 2012; PEASE et al., 2010), which further strengthens the importance of proper technology and equipment selection. Adequate grinding circuit selection and design is thus a key aspect associated with mining projects."
